The Divided State of America

T

he day after the inauguration of the 45th president of the United States of America, millions of people across the globe participated in the Women’s March to protest our new American reality and in solidarity and unity with women here and around the world. Many fear that the xenophobic, racist, and misogynistic rhetoric that catapulted Mr. Trump into office will now be manifest in federal policies that we all must follow. Many fear that we have elected a thin-skinned narcissist who at times behaves more like a child than the most powerful person in the world. (No, Mr. President, you cannot sign an Executive Order to fire the cast of Saturday Night Live.) And some of these concerns have already made news, sadly it’s real news, not the fake kind conjured up from what his administration is calling “alternative facts.” In the week since the new administration took control, executive orders attempting to dismantle the Affordable Care Act, halt federal support for contraceptives and family planning education in developing countries, advance previously halted controversial oil pipelines, limit press access to the White House, direct federal funds to build a wall at the U.S./Mexico border and punish “sanctuary cities,” and to control the flow of information from federal agencies. So on Saturday Americans came out en masse to make a statement to the new administration. There were millions of people participating in over 600 celebrations around the world, including half a million on the National Mall in Washington DC, three times as many attendees than the inaugural ceremony the previous day. In major cities here at home, from Los Angeles to New York to Atlanta, hundreds of thousands gathered in protest. In cities abroad, from Sydney to Paris to Nairobi, the streets were full in an unprecedented international show of solidarity. And even here in Riverside, a record crowd of over 5,000 took to the streets in Riverside’s downtown pedestrian mall in an act of resistance to Mr. Trump’s impending policies, he rolled the first dozen out over the course of this week. Linda Sherman-Nurick, Cellar Door Bookstore owner and one of the Riverside Women’s March organizers, had first planned to fly to Washington DC to participate in that march. But then she thought, “what about all the people who couldn’t afford to go to DC…Why not do something here?” Linda’s bookstore had served as a meeting location for a group of people who just felt compelled to “do something” after the election. They weren’t sure what, they just wanted to get more civically and politically involved. That group partnered with “Rise-Up California,” another group that also formed after the historic election. “People needed a way to stand-up, they just had no idea that so many others in their community felt the same,” she said. As an observer of the Women’s March in Riverside it was clear to me that the divided state of our nation, can never be unified under this administration because there is a fundamental difference in values that goes beyond party politics. Unlike recent elections that appeared to divide our country, the divisive rhetoric, subsequent appointments and outright lies from the new administration have fueled a movement that appears poised to show the new leadership and the world that evil only triumphs when good people do nothing. For Linda, the outpouring of support for the march, was a sign of hope, “My community doesn’t believe in that agenda,” she said, “…this is my Riverside.” Paulette Brown-Hinds, PhD

Didn’t it Rain. . .and Snow. . .and Flood Riverside-Rain, snow, thunder, lightning and high winds pummeled the inland region and all of Southern California in recent days. The pounding rain and relentless winds caused accidents, flooded roads and stranded drivers--San Bernardino County swift water rescue team was called upon to use their raft to rescue two people in one local community. Flooding closed some roadways and highways; while heavy snow in the mountain regions resulted in snow-days off for school children. Throughout the weekend and into Monday there were flash flood warnings; winter snow warnings; aerial rain warnings and in some instances, thunderstorm warnings. On Monday, flash flood watches remained in effect for most of the area and the mountain communities remained under a winter storm warning and snow levels were expected to drop to nearly 4,000 feet. On Sunday, the National Weather Service warned Southern California residents that the storm could be the most powerful weather event to hit the southland in the past seven years.

County Seeks to Reallocate Anti-Terrorism Grant Funding to Local Survivors San Bernardino

L

ast Thursday, county officials sought the assistance of California’s 31st Congressional District Representative Pete Aguilar to reallocate more than one million dollars of a four million federal anti-terrorism grant. The money is currently earmarked to pay or reimburse the county for costs incurred because of the December 2, 2015, terrorist attack at the Inland Regional Center. Local officials believe the money should instead be used to cover the costs of medical treatment not covered by worker’s compensation for the survivors of the attack. On January 17, the county learned from the California Victim Compensation Board that a portion of the grant could be used to reimburse injured survivors of the December 2nd attack for medical treatments awaiting approval through worker’s compensation. According to San Bernardino County Spokesperson David Wert, if the reallocation is approved as requested, it will nearly double the $1.6 million already set aside in the grant for survivors. Board of Supervisors Chairman Robert Lovingood spoke about the reallocation request. “The county has so far spent more than $20 million responding to and recovering from this tragedy never expecting to be reimbursed beyond first responder costs,” he s a i d and continued. “The County appreciates the efforts of the District Attorney’s Bureau of Victim Services and the California Victim Compensation Board to secure this grant from the U.S. Department of Justice, but we would rather see this money set aside to directly assist the survivors in their recovery.” According to Wert, there are nearly 54 county employees with active worker’s compensation cases stemming from the attack. A few of them have voiced concerns about challenges they continue to have with their claims. “It is the county’s hope that reallocation of these funds will make additional resources available from the grant to pay for treatments that are awaiting approval.” When county employee Syed Rizwan Farook and his wife Tashfeen Malik attacked his co-workers during a combined training session/holiday party on December 2, 2015, they left 14 people dead and twenty-two others seriously injured.

FHA Commitment to Reduce Mortgage Insurance Premiums is “Trumped” Just eleven days ago, as reported by The Voice/Black Voice News, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced the Federal Housing Administration plans to reduce, by a quarter of a percent, the annual premiums most borrowers would pay for mortgages in 2017. The Federal Housing Administration’s reduced premium rates were projected to save new, FHAinsured homeowners an average of $500 this year. The change was slated to most new mortgages with a closing/disbursement date on or after January 27, 2017. However, just hours after he took the oath of office, President Donald J. Trump revoked the price cut indefinitely. The planned reduction was expected to provide savings to millions of Americans who insure their home loans through the FHA. The Trump administration did not provide any explanation for the change.

he community is mourning the loss of one of its American Legion leaders. Dr. Willie Roberts was born April 3, 1924 in Mesa, Arizona to Carter and Rosa Roberts. He was the youngest of four children. Willie left Arizona with his family and moved to Brawley, CA when he was three years old. He attended San Bernardino High School in 1939, then joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. He returned home to Riverside, CA, married Sara Jeanne Gordon

and together they had three daughters. Shortly after getting married, Willie was drafted into the Army during WWII. During his tour in Italy, he earned a medal of honor for renovation of ammunition which was forwarded to the front lines. After the war was over, he returned to Riverside where he joined the Army National Guard. After 38 years of active and reserve continued on page 18

Black Men: Making Your Health a Priority – Part 2 Brothers, are you 40 or over? Even if you feel fine, you should still see your physician or health provider for regular checkups. These visits can help you avoid problems in the future. For example, the only way to find out if you have high blood pressure is to have it checked regularly. High blood sugar and high cholesterol level also may not have any symptoms in the early stages. Simple blood tests can check for these conditions. There are specific times when you should see your provider. Below are screening guidelines for men ages 40 to 64. BLOOD PRESSURE SCREENING: Have your blood pressure checked once a year. If the top number (systolic number) is between 120 and 139 or the bottom number (diastolic number) is between 80 and 89 mm Hg, then continue to have it checked every year. Watch for blood pressure screenings in your area. Ask your provider if you can stop in to have your blood pressure checked. You can also check your blood pressure using the automated machines at local grocery stores and pharmacies. If the top number is greater than 140 or the bottom number is greater than 90, schedule an appointment with your provider. CHOLESTEROL SCREENING AND HEART DISEASE PREVENTION: Your cholesterol

should be checked every 5 years. If you have a high cholesterol level, diabetes, heart disease, kidney problems, or certain other conditions, you may need to be checked more often. Some men should consider taking aspirin to prevent heart attacks. Ask your provider before you start aspirin because aspirin may increase your risk for bleeding. DIABETES SCREENING: If you are age 45 or older, you should be screened every 3 years. If you are overweight, ask your provider if you should be screened at a younger age. Asian Americans should be screened if their BMI is greater than 23. If your blood pressure is above 135/80 mm Hg, or you have other risk factors for diabetes, your provider may test your blood sugar level for diabetes. PROSTATE CANCER SCREENING: Most men age 50 or older should discuss screening for prostate cancer with their provider. African American men and those with a family history of prostate cancer in a first degree relative younger than age 65 should discuss screening at age 45. The potential benefits of PSA testing as a routine screening test have not been shown to outweigh the harms of testing and treatment. If you choose to be tested, the PSA blood test is most often done every year.

Devereaux’s Retirement Plans Announced

San Bernardino

M

any political watchers were caught off guard last Thursday when San Bernardino County Chief Executive Officer Greg Devereaux announced his plans to retire and transition to an advisory role. Devereaux has spent nearly 40 years in public service. Most of his public service career—25 years, was spent in the Inland Empire. Devereaux joined the San Bernardino County Government team in February 2010 after a tenure as city manager for Fontana and Ontario. He was hired by the county as it faced significant organizational

and fiscal challenges that included scandals that cast dispersions on the credibility of local elected officials. “I wish to thank the Board of Supervisors, all of the County’s employees and the entire community for the opportunity to serve in this capacity,” Devereaux said when his retirement was announced. He added, “It has been a great privilege.” Devereaux plans to vacate his position as CEO at the end of the current fiscal year; however, his current contract requires that he continue to work with the county for the next three years as an advisor to the board as well as his successor on programs and matters of impact. He will also retain and expand his involvement in various academic endeavors and provide consultation to various local and regional government agencies. “I will probably remain as busy as I am now,” he admitted. “But, I will have more flexibility than I do as CEO to devote needed attention to my family,” Devereaux shared. Newly installed Board of Supervisors Chairman Robert Lovingood commented on Devereaux’s retirement saying, “I was hoping to work with Greg throughout my chairmanship. Greg’s knowledge and ability to work with the Board to address the county’s challenges will be missed.” Lovingood added, “He is well respected in the local government and business communities.” Devereaux served as the ninth permanent or interim Chief Executive Officer to serve San Bernardino County in twelve years. His initial contract required him to serve a minimum of five years but his ontract was extended by the Board and next month he will complete his seventh years as the county’s CEO. As a result, he has distinguished himself as San Bernardino County’s longest serving CEO in more than 20 years.

State Announces Free Voluntary Lead Testing for School Water Sacramento

T

he State Water Resources Control Board’s Division of Drinking Water announced last week it is working in collaboration with the California Department of Education to begin testing drinking water in schools (K-12) for lead. The offer is available to schools served by a municipality, water district, mutual water company, or other public water system may request assistance from their public water system to conduct water sampling for lead and to provide technical assistance if an elevated lead sample site is found. Long-term exposure to lead can cause serious health problems, particularly in young children. In commenting on the initiative, Deputy Director of the State Water Board’s Division of Drinking Water Darrin Polhemus said, “While the presence of lead in California’s

water infrastructure is minimal compared to other parts of the country, additional testing can help ensure we are continuing to protect our most vulnerable populations.” National events like the lead issues in Flint, Michigan have highlighted the importance of ongoing water quality monitoring. In 2015 Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. directed the State Water Board to incorporate schools into the regular water quality testing that community water systems conduct at customer’s taps. According to the State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB), there are approximately 9,000 K-12 schools in California, most of which are served by more than 3,000 community water systems in the state. While these community water systems extensively and continued on page 18

Riverside Women Rising S. E. Williams Contributor t is estimated as many as 5,000 mothers, sisters, daughters, friends and those who love them, gathered for the Women’s March in Riverside on Saturday—a strong showing of solidarity and support with the Women’s March on Washington. Women and their supporters also marched in the inland cities of Ontario and San Bernardino in addition to communities across California, around the nation and in selected countries all over the world. In fact, millions of women, men and children attended Women’s marches on Saturday in all fifty states and in more than seventy countries. Last week, in an exclusive interview with The Voice/Black Voice News, Connie Ransom, one of the organizers of the Riverside Women’s March, spoke about the genesis of the local event. “Two things happened in Riverside simultaneously,” Ransom began. “First, Linda [Sherman-Nurick] of Cellar Door Books is always hosting activities related to people’s lives.” Next, according to Ransom, she recognized people were worked-up and unhappy after the election and wanted to do something. Those concerned, made a decision to gather so people could talk; see who else had concerns; and then decide what they could do that was positive and constructive. As information began to surface about the planned March in Washington D.C. (and, it was almost a given there would be a solidarity march in Los Angeles), “Sometime during the holiday season, someone in the Riverside group suggested, ‘Why not [march in] Riverside?’”

“Now you have touched the women. You have struck a rock. You have dislodged a boulder . . . ”

There was a meeting scheduled for December 29. The group made the decision to move forward— if not enough people showed up to march in Riverside, “We will have a stand,” Ransom said with determination. As it turned out, 30 people came out to the meeting that night. Although Ransom and some of the others had no previous experience at organizing marches, there were people at the gathering, who did. That evening, those in attendance decided on the march’s location and length; as well as a brief program. In addition to Ransom and ShermanNurick, other key organizers included Liz Harmer, Kim Earhart, Tomma Velez, Chani Beeman, Michelle Campbell, Rosemary Daneslki and Rafael Elizalde Jr. “During the meeting, Linda and I were charged with developing the program,” Ransom explained and continued. “Liz and Tomma agreed to work on a Facebook page with the support of Kim Earhart.” According to Ransom, “About the same time, a woman named Sue Mitchell, who lives in downtown Riverside and has a big following among the arts and business communities, and others, expressed her belief, there was a need to determine how to build a sustained, active gathering of citizens, ‘Who don’t just say, but do.’” From that belief was born ‘Rise Up California,’ a cyber-community which values diversity, respects each other, takes civic engagement seriously and is willing to work for good education, employment, health care for all, security and a clean and safe environment. The marchers gathered at the Eliza Tibbits statue on 6th and Main in downtown Riverside and marched to City Hall where they were addressed by several speakers including Fauzia Rizvi - Muslim speaker from Corona; Maria Barragan - Immigrant Student Coalition CSUSB; Italia Garcia - Center for Community Action and Environmental Justice; Marcela Ramirez – Past

The speakers touched on several important issues that included but were not limited to such topics as education, the environment, immigration and as important—the power of political activism. Political participation was certainly the order of the day. Several local politicians participated in convincing numbers. Included among them were Riverside City Councilman Andy Melendrez; Riverside Community College District trustees Mary Figueroa and Bill Hedrick; State Assemblymember Jose Medina; and representing California's 41st congressional district—U.S. House Representative Mark Takano. In a follow-up discussion with The Voice/Black Voice News on Monday, Ransom was asked to share her feelings about the event’s outcome. “We feel we exceeded any other march in the history of Riverside,” she shared and added, “It was such a happy event.” Although the marchers experienced some shouts of “Trump!” “Trump!” “Trump!” along the route, they failed to disrupt the march or the good feelings of its participants. Ransom also acknowledged the support organizers received from the police. “The Riverside Police Department was amazingly cooperative and flexible,” she said. “We were to stay on sidewalks and we had monitors to be sure people did not cross the street against lights.” However, as the crowd continued to grow, the police soon cordoned off Mission Inn Avenue. “And, we walked right down the center of the street.” Ransom also shared how, march participants seemed intent on moving in the positive. They included lots of kids and families; people in wheel

chairs and moving with the aid of walkers and canes and some marched with babies in carrier on their backs. The thousands that gathered in Riverside wer connected in common cause with the million of women who gathered in solidarity around th world on Saturday. The outstanding turnout in Riverside on Saturday was a “beautiful surprise” to organizer who had hoped for at least, a few hundred. Tha day in Riverside and in cities around the world— love trumped hate. Now that Trump is President and the Women’ March is over, the question is--what’s next According to Ransom, “Within two hours of th march at least 700 people had signed up on th Rise Up California website. The first big publi meeting for Rise Up California is scheduled fo Thursday evening, January 26th at All Saint Episcopal Church in Riverside. For now, the group plans to meet when ther is a task. “Thursday’s meeting is for people to ge a run-down of Rise Up California and its mission. Currently, committees are being formed to focus on four key areas. They include: outreach, education research and logistics. The Outreach Committee will focus on identifying partner groups, voter registration turnout activity; promotion and events lik Saturday’s march. The Education Committe will facilitate teach-ins; education and candidat forums. The Research group will look a issues like legislative background, vetting new sources, fighting fake news and building a bette understanding of what people are fighting for. Th logistics team will be responsible for monitoring th Rise Up California website and the development o a rapid response process. 12-year-old Inland Resident Succumbs to Flu Riverside

L

ast week, Riverside County Health officials reported a twelve-year-old child had died while being treated at a local hospital—the first flu-related death of the season. Riverside County Public Health Officer Dr. Cameron Kaiser confirmed the child lived in the western part of the county and was admitted to the hospital with acute respiratory distress. The child ultimately tested positive for influenza. According to Kaiser the child, who was not identified, “Had a history of underlying health problems.” “Our condolences go out to the family and friends of this child. The death is a disturbing reminder how serious the flu can be, particularly for those with underlying health issues, the very young and the elderly,” said Kaiser. “It’s also an important reminder that getting a flu shot could help you avoid the flu altogether.” “There is still time to get the flu shot,” Kaiser

continued. He added that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that anyone who is at least six months old receive a flu vaccination each year. “So far, testing has shown this year’s flu vaccine to be a good match for viruses currently in circulation,” he confirmed. For more information on where flu shots are being offered throughout Riverside County, visit www.rivcoimm.org. Kaiser also recommended frequent hand washing; avoiding getting close to people who are sick; and maintaining a healthy lifestyle of good nutrition and daily exercise as ways to avoid the flu. “It also is important that anyone ill with fever and cough not to go to work or school,” he stressed. During the 2015-16 flu season, there was a total of nine flu-related deaths reported in Riverside County.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and

clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. NOTICE OF TRUSTEE’S SALE Note: Because the Beneficiary reserves the right to bid less than the total debt owed, it is possible that at the time of the sale the opening bid may be less than the total debt NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (866)-9608299 or visit this Internet Web site http:// www.altisource.com/MortgageServices/ DefaultManagement/TrusteeServices. aspx using the file number assigned to this case 2014-04210-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. National Drug & Alcohol Facts Week

Monday, January 23 through Sunday, January 29, 2017 is National Alcohol Facts Week. The National Institute on Drug Abuse or NIDA believes when teens are given the scientific facts about drugs, they are better prepared to make good decisions for themselves and they can share this information with others. The National Drug & Alcohol Facts Week provides an opportunity to link students with scientists and other experts to counteract the myths about drugs and alcohol that teens get from the internet, social media, TV, movies, music, or from friends. The effort was launched by scientists at NIDA in 2010. As recently as last month according to NIDA, statistics showed that nationally, more than five percent of high school seniors misuse prescription drugs; more than 20 percent smoke marijuana; and at least 35 percent reported using alcohol. Not surprisingly, many teens are not aware of the risks to their health, to their success in school and the dangers posed when driving under the influence. To learn more about the initiative visit teens. drugabuse.gov/national-drugalcohol-facts-week; send an email to drugfacts@nida.nih.gov, or call (301) 443-1124.

regularly test their drinking water for lead, lead could get into clean water at a school campus if there are corroded pipes or old fixtures at the school. Under the new requirement, testing is voluntary for schools, but if the schools make a written request, the community water systems must collect the samples within three months and report the results back to the school within two business days. Sampling locations can include drinking fountains, cafeteria and food preparation areas, and reusable water bottle filling stations. The one-time program extends until Nov. 1, 2019. The other great news for school districts regarding this initiative is that community water systems are responsible for the costs associated with collecting drinking water samples, analyzing them and reporting results through this new program. In addition, the SWRCB’s Division of Financial Assistance has funding available to assist with addressing lead found in tests, with a particular focus on schools in

disadvantaged communities. One local company, the Golden State Water Company has already announced the establishment of a program to collaborate with the schools it serves to ensure the drinking water complies with state and federal lead standards. The company serves 180 schools, many in the inland communities of Apple Valley and Barstow. For more information on the lead sampling for schools program visit waterboards. ca.gov/drinking_water/certlic/drinkingwater/ leadsamplinginschools.shtml.
