arlier this week I watched Selma, the new film on civil rights protests in Selma, Alabama and Dr. Martin Luther King’s negotiations with President Lyndon B Johnson on the passage of legislation to protect the rights of all voters in all parts of the country, but especially in communities like Selma. March 7th of this year marks the 50th anniversary of “Bloody Sunday” the day police brutally attacked a group of 600 peaceful Selma, Alabama marchers as they attempted to cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge. The Civil Rights Act had been passed the year before, but for Blacks even attempting to vote in rural southern communities like Selma was met with intimidation, violence, and in some cases death. The mass assault on the bridge that day, televised across America, marked one of the lowest points in this country’s fight for civil rights for all its citizens. If it does nothing else, the film should inspire a new generation of activists to understand Dr. King’s methodology when trying to change systemic injustices: NEGOTIATE DEMONSTRATE RESIST Negotiate, first. Something I believe most contemporary protesters don’t understand. Protesting, for Dr. King and the other leaders of the civil rights movement, was used as leverage once demands were made. He identified exactly what needed to change and how legislation and public policy are the foundations for equality. Demonstrate, next. The demonstrations had to be dramatic. They had to capture the attention of the media and the American public and international community. These were risky, as the world witnessed on that “Bloody Sunday” in the spring of 1965 when local law officials used billy clubs and tear gas on defenseless men, women, and even children. Finally, resist. Non-violent resistance was a test of will. It took patience, courage, strength and sacrifice. This year, I encourage you to attend one of the many programs held in Dr. King’s honor we have listed in the paper. Or see the movie Selma, and take a young person with you. There are many opportunities for meaningful dialogue. We still have much to learn from the lessons of the past.

Anaheim Ducks Donate $20,000 to Loma Linda University Health to Support Cancer Services
Loma Linda
A
s part of an ongoing partnership, the Anaheim Ducks recently presented Loma Linda University Health (LLUH) with a $20,000 donation to support patient services provided by the Loma Linda University Cancer Center (LLUCC). The funds were raised by the National Hockey League (NHL) club, Anaheim Ducks players, and fans through “Hockey Fights Cancer” night on Oct. 22, which included the sale of miniature hockey sticks signed by players and an in-game auction of Ducks memorabilia. “We are thankful to the Anaheim Ducks for its continuing help in raising cancer awareness and providing valuable funding that will augment our efforts to provide quality and compassionate care to our cancer patients,” said Judy Chatigny,

Executive Director of the LLUCC. “We value our partnership with the Ducks and hope it will continue for many more years.” The “Hockey Fights Cancer” night is part of the NHL’s ongoing initiative to raise support and awareness for one of hockey’s most important fights. With lavender serving as the official “Hockey Fights Cancer” color (representing awareness for all types of cancers), the first 3,000 fans that arrived at the Oct. 22 game received lavender ribbons to wear for the game. Fans also had the opportunity to obtain “I Fight For” cards, which they used to fill in the name of loved ones who have been affected by cancer. During the game, there was a special moment of recognition, in which attendees held up their “I Fight For” cards to honor the person they knew battling the disease.

T
he California Arts Council invites California students to participate in the Conservation Creativity Challenge Poster Contest. This contest supports State Drought Task Force efforts and Governor Brown’s goal of awakening all Californians including young people - to the ongoing need for water conservation in our state. The contest aims to educate students about the serious matter of California’s drought, and to help raise awareness of everyday water conservation practices through the arts and creativity. This is the first time the California Arts Council and Department of Water Resources have partnered on an initiative. “The arts offer a unique way to illuminate reality,” said Craig Watson, Director of the California Arts Council. “Utilizing the arts and creativity through this classroom poster contest will deepen student engagement and understanding about water conservation in California. We hope the Conservation Creativity Challenge contest will help students engage with these important conservation values in new and fun ways.” “In light of the current, severe drought it is more important than ever to encourage all Californians to develop lifelong resource stewardship habits,” said Michelle Robinson, Water Education Specialist at the California Department of Water Resources. “The Conservation Creativity Challenge is a great way for students everywhere to get involved and share their ideas about saving water every day.” Through the contest, educators and parents can harness the creativity of 4th and 5th grade students while fulfilling state education standards. Students are invited to invent fun and unique ways to reduce water use, and illustrate their best idea with an original poster
design. All California students in 4th and 5th grade are eligible to participate and win prizes, including gift cards, and the opportunity for their artwork to be displayed in the State Capitol. Complete contest details and teacher curriculum and lesson planning resources are available at www.arts.ca.gov/conservation. Student entries must be submitted by March 31, 2015. F.A.C.P., F.A.C.P.M.
Practical Weight Loss Begins With: ‘Commitment’ Dear Dr. Levister: My New Year’s resolutions include the usual getting rid of clutter in my apartment and completing my Associates Degree. But what I really dream of is losing weight. How do I get past the no surgery, no exercise, no gimmicks hype? G.W. Dear G.W.: Start by making a commitment! People Magazine’s January 5, 2015 weight loss centered issue “Half Their Size” hits us between the eyes. For sure the case studies were impressive and inspiring. But one is left with the million dollar question, what’s the real secret to losing weight and keeping it off? In our busy lives, it is very easy to get caught in the trap of eating too much and doing too little. For many of us, this will inevitably lead to us gaining weight, and so if we are to reverse this trend we need to change our habits. Even if we eat a healthy and balanced diet, we can still gain weight if we eat too much, or if we don’t burn that food off with exercise. While drastic diets can seem attractive as they may bring quick results, the chances are that they won’t work long-term as it is almost impossible to maintain the lifestyle that comes with them. After you have stopped, you are likely to put the weight back on (and sometimes even more than before) if you return to your old eating habits. Instead, by changing to healthy foods and exercise, you are more likely to stick to your new habits, keeping the weight off long-term. Make a commitment. Permanent weight loss takes time and effort — and a lifelong
commitment. Make sure that you’re ready to make permanent changes and that you do so for the right reasons. To stay committed to your weight loss, you need to be focused. It takes a lot of mental and physical energy to change your habits. So as you’re planning new weight-loss-related lifestyle changes, make a plan to address other stresses
in your life first, such as financial problems or relationship conflicts. While these stresses may never go away completely, managing them better should improve your ability to focus on achieving a healthier lifestyle. Then, once you’re ready to launch your weight-loss plan, set a start date and then — start.

inmyopinion “Je Suis Charlie” Too
J
e Suis Charlie” or “I am Charlie” has garnered attention around the world after the massacre of seventeen people in Paris, France. Hardy L. Brown Eleven of those were editors, cartoonists, and staff of weekly newspaper Charlie Hebdo. This past week some 40 leaders from various nations and millions of French citizens walked hand in hand in solidarity for freedom of expression and the right of a weekly newspaper to print information that some considered offensive toward their religion. I want to bring attention to all of the weekly publications around the world that can and do make a difference in the lives of those they serve, so keep on printing and publishing your thoughts for this complicated world of ours. It was not the BBC, NBC, CBS ABC, CNN, MSNBC, FOX, NEW York Times, LA Times or the many other worldwide daily news media outlets that brought international attention to this simple right of freedom of expression. It is sad that some people’s beliefs are so warped that they can only resort to violence as a means of expression instead of using words to get their point of view understood. I must admit I did not truly understand the importance of the ‘Freedom of the Press’ or the right to assemble to correct things in our society until I took ownership of The Black Voice Newspaper and we began telling the story from our perspective. The staff and publisher of Charlie Hebdo “
8
were expressing their thoughts and ideas in a society where people of any belief could express themselves and it’s too bad that those who died could not witness the millions who marched to say you did not die in vain. I am glad to have witnessed this historic demonstration in Paris by so many nations on behalf of this weekly newspaper. “I am Charlie” could be the mantra of the many community weekly papers in America who challenge the wrongs in our society and are sometimes shunned by those in authority. In the early days of the Black Press some publishers were burned out and Ida B. Wells had to leave the south or be hung by people who hated her for writing editorials about Blacks being lynched. As a former publisher of the Black Voice News during the days after the Tyisha Miller shooting, my wife and I were told to stop printing about the shooting if we wanted to be protected by the police. They told her, “we,” (meaning the police), “protect our friends”.

This conversation with the police came about when we reported that Klan materials had been left at our newsstands as well as on our vehicle. The Klan placed leaflets on our newsstands in certain sections of the city and county of Riverside. Feeling as though the local police would not do anything, we reported the incidents to the FBI. Shortly after that, the city confiscated our stands, so our distribution would not be accessible to the general public. Our readers had to pickup their copies in churches, barbershops, beauty salons, local restaurants, or in the mail. Thanks to then Mayor Ron Loveridge and a federal court judge, we got our newsstands put back on the streets. So I join the many millions of people who are standing up for freedom of expression and the press regardless of race or religion. We must eradicate this menace of extremism of killing each other over words. I am Charlie.
iemoviereview SELMA Yesterday and Today
T
he #BlackLivesMatter movement means a lot to me and after seeing the film Selma, my heart was heavy from witnessing what happened in real life 50 years ago. In 2015, some of the exact same things that happened are recurring today and it is truly sickening to me that the madness has not been tamed. On Sunday, the 11th of January, I saw the movie Selma. It premiered nationwide on Friday January 9th. My first reaction to the movie was it is excellent. The first scene is Martin Luther King Jr. engaging in a nervous conversation with his wife Coretta Scott King before accepting the Nobel Peace Prize. The next scene takes you to the 16th Street Birmingham Church. Four little girls are dressed in their “Sunday’s best” and chatting about Coretta Scott King’s hairstyle and how they think she does it. One girl mentions that her mother says it is too grown for her age. Three of the girls continue down the stairs and the fourth girl stops and says, “I know how she did it. She parted it down the middle…” BOOM! A loud bomb blast. The blast kills her and the other girls. I gasped loudly in the theater, covered my mouth, and cried. This was the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, the capital of Alabama. It was September 15, 1963 and the third bombing in 11 days. The bombing happens within the first ten minutes of the film. It is this kind of captivating impact that takes viewers watching Selma into the movie, making you truly feel as though you are there. Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK), played by David Oyelowo, and the rest of the leaders of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) were headed towards Selma, Alabama to protest to change the current voting laws. MLK talks to President Lyndon Johnson, who took office after Kennedy’s assassination. President Johnson, played by Tom Wilkinson, asks King,
“can’t we just hold off a bit? I want to discuss other issues like poverty, that’s a hot topic right now.” King would not accept non-action: “We have our rights, but they can’t be used freely in the community.” This is because even though segregation was legally over, racial prejudices still ruled the south. Oprah Winfrey played civil rights activist Annie Lee Cooper who is shown attempting to
register to vote for her second or third time, only to be asked questions she could not answer like reciting the names of the 68 county judges. Cooper, the historical figure, was also known for punching Sheriff Jim Jordan Brown Clark in the face at a VOICE protest in Selma. Student Contributor This is a parallel of things that are happening today, like the number of Blacks killed by law enforcement and the resurgence of hate crimes throughout the United States. The pain and oppression continues: 18-year-old Michael Brown was unarmed and killed by Ferguson, Missouri police officer Darren Wilson. Wilson is a free man and gained $500,000 from a support fund. A grand jury did not indict him for the killing. There is also Eric Garner who was killed by police in New York. He was strangled to death for allegedly selling untucked cigarettes, even though that is not a crime punishable by death. The police officer that killed Garner put him in an illegal chokehold. Garner’s entire execution was caught on tape as he told the officers that he could not breathe 11 times and he had asthma but the police officer didn’t stop. The officer did not go to prison and as in the case of Wilson, he was not indicted. There are so many parallels from Selma in 1965 to now 2015. During this year’s Golden Globe awards, Selma did win for best original song; it is a phenomenal film and doesn’t need any awards for us to recognize this movie for the greatness it achieves. See Selma, I strongly encourage everyone. Remember Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the January 19, 2015.

‘the Dream’ Multi-generation activists find inspiration in Dr. King’s legacy, but note differences today with #BlackLivesMatter movement By Corey Arvin Staff Writer

ylvia Martin-James hears an echo from yester year – one that reverberates just a little bit differently than the outcry for equality and justice from the golden era of the civil rights movement that she keenly recalls. The latest rallying cause for civil rights has centered around #BlackLivesMatter, a social-media inspired revocation to police brutality, but still mirrors the movement catapulted to the national stage by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. continued on page 12

Martin-James is a well-regarded and revered activist in Riverside who has taken cues from the civil rights movements emphasis on education and applied it to various local issues. MartinJames, a retired educator, is known for her role in establishing the Grier Pavilion in Riverside City Hall, honoring late activists Dr. Barnett Grier and his wife Jean. Since the #BlackLivesMovement peaked last year, Martin-James has only been a spectator. She admits she isn’t a “technical” person in today’s generation of internet-savvy activism. However, Martin-James is heartened by the movement, but cautions there are important elements lacking in the approach she has witnessed surrounding calls for police reform. Martin-James believes the activism using social media is very singular, and doesn’t usually foster the collaboration and synergy that were the springboard for the civil rights movements of the 1950’s and 60’s. “High tech now pretty much is a singular involvement. It is a contrast to what was once a coming together for all of what was taking place [back then],” she said. “I think there is a high likelihood of a pitfall. I think it is already becoming clearer and clearer the young ones are at ease with themselves and don’t have such a sense of others around them. They are perfectly well equipped high tech, and think this demand is really what it’s about,” she added. Martin-James watched the rousing gestures of solidarity and protests emanating from Ferguson, Mo. and New York from her television and followed the news coverage. It struck her
12
that coming from an earlier civil rights generation, the input from her generation could have been an asset to the protesters. “Being of an older age is a plus at times like that because you can have a greater understanding of the individuals as well as the groupings taking place at many locations so there would not be an attempt on the part of some to be much more boisterous and demanding and wanting to see instantly some change, some aspect of that change that would encourage them. … My only criticism would be some of the younger age, as well as some of the elderly age, to share with each other frequently,” she said. A Complex Comparison efore anti-police brutality protests reached a fever pitch last month, African-Americans and sympathizers of Ferguson were criticized from the left and right. Conservatives panned the argument that police brutality disproportionately – and unjustifiably – affected blacks. Liberals shamed Ferguson’s black citizens for lackluster voting statistics and dismal law enforcement

of work that King did and civil rights activists did in the 60s, that work particularly with regard to structural violence, is work that I think is being taken up by folks today. So it’s not just a question of integration, but really a question of who has a right to life and a life of quality,” she added. MLK Still Inspires ark-Anthony Johnson, a member and spokesperson for the #BlackLivesMatter Los Angeles extension said the civil rights era inspires the organization, even though they operate in a different generation. Civil rights leaders didn’t have the networking technologies that activists such as Johnson use to communicate with fellow activists and strangers alike, or to stir change with the virtually instantaneous posting of multimedia images. Johnson says social media has been integral in broadcasting messages and he sees a growing interest in the local faction of #BlackLivesMatter. “[Social media] had a tremendous affect. It becomes a really powerful tool for folks to get information and interact. The fact that someone at any given moment can record an image … a moment of law enforcement violence. Not only because of how quickly information can get out, but how frequently patterns become visible,” said Johnson. Johnson says he still sees value in the fundamental attitude King exhibited throughout his life. “I think Dr. King captured an energy of persistence … being diligent about what we are up against.”

associate professor of English at University of California, Riverside (UCR), understanding why AfricanAmericans are negatively, disproportionately impacted by policing is more complex than their voting patterns or civic participation. Edwards, who is also an award-winning author of “Charisma and the Fictions of
Black Leadership”, says the continued existence of structural violence is not necessarily about integration. “These past 50 years have witnessed so many dramatic shifts with the growth of U.S. interest and militarism around the globe. So questions King was beginning to ask before he was assassinated in 1968, questions about U.S. imperialism, U.S. militarism, asking questions about Vietnam, those questions I think have become even more pressing, increasingly over the past 50 years, but especially in the years since the September 11th attacks,” said Edwards. “The questions about who has a right to life or what kind of lives matter is a question that now gets increasingly asked, not only by oppressed people or oppressed groups within the U.S., those questions get approached through comparative frames. You see, for example, young black activists here comparing the kind of police violence we witness here to what’s happening to Palestinians living in occupied territories.
