came across that quote recently as I prepared for a Girl Scout alumnae event. I thought the point the quote was trying to make was exemplified in everything that I learned in my experience as a Girl Scout. For me scouting reinforced the 4C’s, those values and attributes that I learned at home: courage, compassion, confidence, and citizenship. My parents always encouraged us to help others and we were rewarded when we did. Just this week I was having dinner with my older sister Lynn and she told me she currently has a houseguest, one of her son’s friends who really had no family and no place to stay. I laughed because I too have a houseguest, my son’s friend who currently has no place to stay. I commented that we learned it from the best. Both our mom and her mom had an open door policy for people in need. My grandmother even converted the garage in her San Bernardino home to accommodate more beds after she inherited five of her nieces and nephews after her sister’s death. My mother Cheryl also modeled that behavior. She was always there to help someone else. She always had a clear expectation and commitment to making the community better. It was a priority. She also happened to be our Girl Scout troop leader. Scouting reinforced the importance of learning practical skills. Camping taught survival skills and respect for nature, even if our campground was a makeshift campsite in the empty field next to our house. Looking back perhaps it wasn’t a good idea to practice our campfires in our neighborhood field. In our defense, that was a long time ago. Just to give our actions some perspective, wearing seat belts wasn’t even mandatory back then. Working toward earning first aid, cooking, and sewing badges (yes, I can cook and sew) taught independence and self-reliance. Selling cookies and calendars taught entrepreneurship and self-confidence. And today’s scouts are even more advanced than I remember being. Last month I bought my seven boxes of Girl Scout cookies from the grandfather of a girl scout I never met. He is the general manager of a restaurant that I frequent and she convinced him to be her outside sales force. She sold over 1,250 boxes and earned a new tablet, a cool amusement park experience, and a bunch of other swag. Smart girl. But most importantly, what I believe scouting did for me and continues to do for 10 million girls around the world, is shape our worldview and the way we view ourselves reinforcing those important attributes and values: courage which makes us strong, confidence which helps us excel, compassion which keeps us humble, and citizenship which encourages us to make our communities better. So, no disrespect to boys, but I believe that seeking to be a Girl Scout (because once a Girl Scout always a Girl Scout) is the most ambitious thing any girl can look to do.

New Jerusalem Christian Center Celebrates the Installation of a New Generation Riverside
By Marla A. Matime
L
ast Sunday, New Jerusalem Christian Center installed Jerdall “Jerry” Louder Jr., son of the late Reverend Jerdall Louder, Sr. By his side, was his wife of 15 years and counting, Sunni Louder. Founded in 1975 by Reverend Dr. Jerry and Phalia Louder, it was their life’s mission and purpose for more than 35 years, to spread the gospel through preaching and teaching the word of God, ministering in music, feeding the hungry and building up churches throughout the country. With the church originally beginning as New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church from 1975 through 1978, the name changed to New Jerusalem Foursquare Church from 1978 through 1996 and finally with how the community recognizes them now as New Jerusalem Christian Center since 1997. In 2010, Reverend Jerry Louder Sr. passed on, leaving a legacy unlike no other, and he will never be forgotten. The City of Riverside, currently has plans to name a street after Rev. Louder, to commemorate the faithfulness and dedication that he and his wife Phalia have committed to the community throughout the years. Although Pastor Louder Jr. excelled and succeeded in his academic studies by obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology at Bethel College, he went on to pursue his passion for the Lord by attending and completing seminary courses at the United States Pastor’s Association, where he then earned his Ministerial License in 2003. In 2005 he was ordained as a Minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and continued his academic studies to complete law school in 2007 while working as an auto claims adjuster for a major insurance company. Pastor’s faithful service under his father Reverend Louder Sr., covered a span of three decades, working diligently as Youth Pastor, Overseeing Elder of Music & Creative Arts Ministries, Praise and Worship Team leader, Audio & Video Technician, and his very first role in the church was to serve as Usher, at the tender age of six years old,

when he made the commitment of his life to be baptized having a full understanding of the commitment that he had made to fulfill the Lord’s purpose. Pastor Louder Jr., was requested by the members of the church to be an interim pastor for one year at the beginning of 2013 and that request has come into fruition by the installation ceremony, making him the Senior Pastor of New Jerusalem. The saying goes, “that behind every strong man, there is a strong woman,” and Reverend
Sunni Louder is just that. She has also excelled and succeeded in academia by attending and obtaining her Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from the University of California, Riverside. While attending UCR, she signed with the Ford Modeling Agency in Beverly Hills, as a print model, proving that you can have beauty along with brains. She too attended seminary courses under the United States Pastor’s Association where she received her ministerial license in 2003. Rev. Sunni Louder has been an active member of New Jerusalem since the age of 12, taking on various positions within the church for over two decades from Women’s Ministry President, Bible Study teacher, church photographer, choir directory, website designer, computer technician and application programmer, and the list goes on and on. Throughout the installation ceremony, the atmosphere was filled with love and joy as other churches and their pastor’s in the Inland Empire, were present to take part in this historic event. Many shared their encounters with the late Rev. Louder Sr. and the relationship that they have

California Public Utilities Commission Votes for More Dirty Gas Plants Last minute changes may allow for more fossil-fueled energy
San Francisco
T
he California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) voted on their plan to replace the power from the shuttered San Onofre Nuclear Generating System. The CPUC passed their proposed decision unanimously, which will require Southern California Edison and San Diego Gas & Electric to incorporate clean energy to replace the San Onofre system. Ultimately, the final decision incorporated last minute changes that will increase the odds that utilities will build gas plants instead of installing local, renewable energy sources. While the CPUC’s final plan does require that a portion of the energy come from renewable sources, the utilities will ultimately get to choose where the bulk of the energy comes from, which could include natural gas. Leaving this choice in the hands utilities could pave the way for new, gas-fired power plants that are often built in low-income communities of color. In fact, San Diego Gas & Electric has already begun to lay the groundwork for a new gas plant in Carlsbad. The utility could use that plant in the energy mix
required by the CPUC to replace the San Onofre plant. “The closure of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station opened the way to pursue clean energy options in Southern California. While the utilities will be required to replace at least some of the power with preferred renewable resources, the Commission has also authorized building more energy capacity than is necessary,” said Will Rostov, Earthjustice Staff Attorney, who represented Sierra Club in the proceeding. “Additionally, there were some last minute changes to the decision that appear to facilitate the opening of new gas-powered power plants, a clear step in the wrong direction when we’re striving to build more clean energy resources and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.” “We are outraged at this decision. The CPUC is allowing far too much new energy generation that we don’t need. What is especially concerning is that it leaves the door wide open for the vast majority of that energy to be produced with polluting fossil fuels, at the expense of our wallets and our health,” said Strela Cervas, CoCoordinator with the California Environmental
Justice Alliance. “These dirty gas plants are likely to end up in low-income communities of color who have been clamoring for local clean energy. This decision completely circumvents the public’s input.” “The CPUC’s final plan is a major step back the Governor’s already-weak proposal, which would have required at least half the power come from renewable resources. The Administration had a chance to support local, clean energy innovation and instead chose more pollution by allowing dirty gas to play a majority role in replacing San Onofre,” said Evan Gillespie, Campaign Director for My Generation. “Now, they are leaving the fate of Southern California’s energy future in the hands of the utilities, giving them the power to choose between dirty gas or clean energy. Moving forward, we expect the utilities do the right thing and side with their customers who want clean energy that will protect their air and health.” Existing gas plants are already contributing to the ozone pollution that leaves the Los Angeles basin with some of the dirtiest air in the country, with an “F” rating from the American Lung Association.

Understanding Meditation Dear Dr. Levister: I have a medical condition that can be worsened by stress. My friends say I should consider meditating to reduce stress. What should I know? K.P. Dear K.P.: Meditation has been practiced for thousands of years. Meditation originally was meant to help deepen understanding of the sacred and mystical forces of life. These days, meditation is commonly used for relaxation and stress reduction. Meditation is considered a type of mind-body complementary medicine. Meditation produces a deep state of relaxation and a tranquil mind. During meditation, you focus your attention and eliminate the stream of jumbled thoughts that may be crowding your mind and causing stress. This process results in enhanced physical and emotional well-being. Meditation can give you a sense of calm, peace and balance that benefits both your emotional wellbeing and your overall health. And these benefits don’t end when your meditation session ends. Meditation can help carry you more calmly through
your day and can even improve certain medical conditions. Meditation also might be useful if you have a medical condition, especially one that may be worsened by stress. While a growing body of scientific research supports the health benefits of meditation, some researchers believe it’s not yet possible to draw conclusions about the possible benefits of meditation. If stress has you anxious, tense and worried, consider trying meditation. Spending even a few minutes in meditation can restore your calm and inner peace. Anyone can practice meditation. It’s simple and inexpensive, and it doesn’t require any special equipment. And you can practice meditation wherever you are — whether you’re out for a walk, riding the bus, waiting at the doctor’s office or even in the middle of a difficult business meeting.

Residents of affected communities have held a series of escalating protests and actions in recent months, demanding that the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station be replaced with clean energy and jobs, not more dirty gas-fired plants. New gas plants would lock in more carbon pollution for decades to come and would undermine California’s climate targets. According to the California Air Resources Board, greenhouse gas emissions rose in 2012 for the first time since 2008 because of increased reliance on gas plants after San Onofre closed.

L
ast week I wrote about what I witnessed at an Arroyo Valley High School community meeting called by the San Bernardino school district and Hardy L. Brown San Bernardino chief of police. Shortly after that there was a city council meeting where I witnessed another thing that we must correct or change. Our city is divided into wards to ensure that a diversity of citizens are represented from all sections of the city. Now that most discriminatory practices have been lessened, our elected wards now reflect a more diverse population. This now places responsibility on the elected representatives to reflect that in their selection and appointment of citizens to the city’s various boards and commissions. I am not advocating a change in the ward system but pointing out that each elected council member must take diversity and inclusion into consideration when making appointments. When it comes to inclusion in our city government some of our departments do not have a good record and people in San Bernardino do not forget how their people have been treated. For example our public safety departments do not have positive relationships with the Latino and African American community. As newly elected officials we have a chance to change that or we will travel down the bumpy road getting the same results we always have had. I am reminded of the scripture of the sins of our fathers being passed on to the third and fourth generation. If we do not look at our hiring system to determine if equal access is given to all, then we will continue with

the same problem others have had and you have inherited as public officials. We can break that by being more inclusive and transparent in all of our decisions. President Barack Obama recently awarded the Medal of Honor to 24 US Army veterans who did not receive the nation’s highest combat medal because of racism. The veterans, who fought in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War were discriminated against receiving the Distinguished Service Cross, the nation’s second-highest service medal based on ethnicity and religion. They were Hispanic, Asian, African American and Jewish. I am proud of the fact that you recognize our local heroes that serve in our military. And it is interesting to see the number of African American and Latinos that chose the Armed Services as
a career path after graduating from our public school system. Yet I am concerned that unless we change to become a more inclusive city government in all we do, many of them will return home and not find gainful employment in the same government that represents them. As newly elected officials we can be more inclusive. Other Inland Empire cities like Rialto, Fontana, Riverside, and Banning have surpassed San Bernardino when it comes to appointing highranking people of color in the police and fire departments. I would encourage us to look at the recruiting, selection, hiring and promotions within those departments like Los Angeles is doing now. As newly elected leaders we can’t afford to do business as usual with our public safety employees. I say reach out to the community for ideas and input. All of us stand ready to assist.

Kiana Webb-Severloh is ‘Lovin’ it’ Family Business, Youth, and Community By Samuel Williams, Jr. Kiana Webb-Severloh photos by Carlos Puma
W
ebb Family Enterprises President Kiana Webb-Severloh, at the age of 36, is considered young in the business world. However, after one talks with her, one thing is clear: the young woman has an old soul that permeates wisdom and poise. She actually took over the position at the tender age of 25-years-old. And it is clear that over the years growing into the position, she has a heart for the community’s youth, has become a role model for women, and takes seriously her responsibility to guide others in their own personal growth. Webb-Severloh owns five McDonald’s restaurants in the Inland Empire. She also runs operations for the 16 restaurants that fall under her family’s company, Webb Family Enterprises. While many in her position would be too busy to even care about others, not so for her. Her passion within the McDonald’s system is people and creating an environment where everyone who enters feels special and appreciated from the crew to the customers. Other passions include her partnership with the Pomona Unified School District and their literacy which promotes reading and increased comprehension. Her advocacy extends to creating employment opportunities through another organization that works with women who have been incarcerated and need to get back on their feet. As an advocate for childhood literacy, WebbSeverloh is partnering with Pomona Unified School District to build a program focused on literacy and reading comprehension. It is her continued on page 12

hope the collaborative effort will increase reading habits and skills that will strengthen Pomona students’ performances in all of their school subjects. Webb-Severloh said it has been a long standing commitment, passed down from her parents to her and her siblings, that business owners should serve the community’s youth. “Back in the day, a village was what raised families and we’ve gone away from that,” says Webb-Severloh. “Building that communal aspect, giving back and having my family involved is such a blessing to my life.” She attributes her strong sense of family and spiritual convictions to working in the family business, Webb Family Enterprises started by Webb-Severloh’s parents, Reggie and Rene Webb. This husband and wife duo own more than ten McDonald’s restaurants in Pomona, Ontario, Montclair, Claremont, La Puente, and Baldwin Park. Their eldest son Karim Malik Webb, who attended Morehouse College, owns a Buffalo Wild Wings franchise in Torrance and younger son, Kyle Aaron Webb, a Morehouse graduate, is an ABC/Disney financial analyst. Webb-Severloh’s company also purchases books from African American bookstores for youth involved with the Ronald McDonald’s House. Webb-Severloh sees the McDonald’s brand as a

de facto part of American society and with that comes the need to give back to the community. “The McDonald’s brand as a whole is a direct reflection on how franchises like mine and my parents should operate within the community. The partnership we have with the Pomona School District is a direct response to our being a global entity,” Webb-Severloh said. “In California, our restaurants serve a multi-cultural community that are loyal. Franchises are the conduits between corporate and community. We understand the needs of the community and have a responsibility to be there for the community.” However, being a franchise owner, WebbSeverloh saw the proverbial “glass ceiling” that in theory holds many woman from achieving their true potential. Webb-Severloh said she saw the glass ceiling, but chose to shatter it. And not only is Webb-Severloh proud to be so successful in the business world, she wants to share her formula for success with other women. “First of all, you need to stay true to who you are and constantly be aware you must conduct yourself with integrity,” Webb-Severloh said. “Never forget, character counts, and at the end of the day, that really is all you have. I believe there are many other elements that helped me advance in my professional career. I believe it all started with discipline. When I say discipline, I don’t

mean it in the traditional sense. Be disciplined to the point that accepting rejection is a way of life. That getting a ‘no’ is okay for the moment, but it will not be the norm.” Being appointed to the family company’s presidency was a challenge Webb-Severloh admits. There were older employees who doubted her ability to lead. “I knew when I came in I had to win the approval of the more mature employees and I knew I had to win some people over. I was successful in winning many people over because I consistently proved I could make solid decisions that were to the benefit of the company,” WebbSeverloh said. “And I brought a collaborative style of management to the team. So often people make the mistake of being new and bringing a ‘directive’ style of management, one where they prefer to tell people what to do as opposed to listening to the varying ideas of those around you. I also worked under the concept that one employee’s strength was not always the strength of another. I took the time to learn people’s strengths and weaknesses and worked with them based on those observations. I believe to be a successful company, ‘the whole group must gain success and not the individual.” Webb-Severloh also stressed humility. “Part of discipline is being willing to ask for help,” Webb-
Severloh said. “You must learn to put yourself in the right position, to ask the right person, the right questions.” For Webb-Severloh, part of being an effective president is a need to train the management team. One key to achieving this is working with the organization, Black McDonald’s Food Operators (BMFO) of Southern California. “We employ just under 1000 employees and it is our expectation to represent our community in whatever multicultural environment that the franchise is located. And since we are a minority owned company, we are more vigilant in making sure everyone has fair opportunities to advance within the company and that we are recruiting across a diverse base of people.” Webb-Severloh also said her company provides a matching 401k program and the ability to study courses in the Landmark education curriculum. “I am fortunate that I had parents who invested their time and knowledge in me and allowed me to grow to be the person and manager I am now,” Webb-Severloh said. “We will continue to serve the community and I just pray I will become wiser and more of a source of continued help to our community.”

iebookreview “MY BELOVED WORLD” by Sonia Sotomayor Reviewed by Laura L. Klure
S
onia Sotomayor’s autobiography is an inspiring story, one that could encourage many young people to work toward success. She honestly describes her difficult childhood, living in a low-income family in one of the slums of New York. She had to overcome many things, in order to advance to being worthy of her appointment by President Barack Obama to the United States Supreme Court. The greatest aspect of this memoir is that it reveals Sotomayor’s internal thinking, her selfdoubts, her challenges, and how she learned new skills. She credits the many teachers, mentors, and friends who helped her advance in life and in her career. Sotomayor’s parents were from Puerto Rico, and they did not speak English at home. Her father was an alcoholic, and he died when Sonia and her brother were in grade school. Their mother worked as a nurse, leaving the children under the care of their grandmother. Another major challenge for Sotomayor was discovering at about age 8 that she had Type-1 Diabetes. Amazingly, the little girl immediately learned how to inject her own insulin. Language differences, poverty, family troubles, serious illness – a host of problems could have
kept her down. The narrative focuses on her travels through childhood in Catholic school, college at Princeton, Yale Law School, and her early employment as an attorney. She outlines the thoughts she had and the ways she learned to survive in all these maturing experiences, but the book deliberately does not go into her recent work as a judge in depth. She is the first Hispanic and only the third woman to be appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court. As an adult, Sotomayor also dealt with relationship problems, including a difficult marriage and some work experiences where men treated women unfairly. She learned how to respond to various conflicts, how to adjust her thoughts and her speech to accomplish desired results. She states, “I’ve always believed people can change; very few are carved in stone or beyond redemption. All my life I’ve looked around me and asked: What can I learn here?” One of her online comments about the book is, “In short, this is a book about hope.” She tries in many ways to encourage others to succeed, regardless of their backgrounds. Readers may find it interesting to compare Sotomayor’s story with that of Justice Clarence Thomas, whose memoir “My Grandfather’s Son” came out in 2007. Now available in paperback, Sotomayor’s “My Beloved World” book is widely sold online and in

bookstores. The book is 302 pages, published by Alfred A. Knopf, and is also available as an e-book. Pictures of her family and and of her official ceremonies are included in 16 pages of photos. Videos of Sotomayor talking about the book can be found online.

A Petition for Probate has been filed by: DWAYNE ELLIOTT, II in the Superior Court of California, County of: RIVERSIDE. The Petition for Probate requests that: DWAYNE ELLIOTT, II be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent. The petition requests the decedent’s will and codicils, if any, be admitted to probate. The will and any codicils are available for examination in the file kept by the court. The time for filing claims will not expire before four months from the hearing date noticed above. You may examine the file kept by the court. During a recent Assembly Floor Session, Gonzalez was honored for her outstanding leadership and strong advocacy in support of water resources, education and small business. “I’m very proud to recognize small business owner Linda Gonzalez as my Woman of the Year,” said Assemblymember Brown. “She’s been a dedicated leader in the Inland Empire region for over thirty years. She was recently elected to the West Valley Water District of San Bernardino County. She broke the proverbial ceiling when she was appointed as the first Latina president of the Bloomington Woman’s Club in 2010. Most notably, she served as chairwoman and board member of the Bloomington Municipal Advisory Committee (MAC) for thirteen years, and as vice chairwoman of the Colton Joint Unified School District Measure G Committee. She’s always giving back and I just want to recognize her for the great work that she’s doing to enhance our community.”
