n Saturday I joined 1,000 others – mostly women – at Riverside Community Hospital HeartCare Institute’s 6th Annual Red Dress Fashion Show, Luncheon and Health Expo. What began six years ago as a small heart health awareness event has turned into one of the most wellattended health awareness events in Riverside thanks to the vision of the hospital’s marketing director and event organizer, Cherie Russell. This year Cherie brought together the Riverside Downtown Partnership, RCC School of Cosmetology, and Riverside’s downtown retailers: Toni Moore, The Parrot, and Vanity Haus. I participated in the fashion show and joined other women business owners, civic leaders, and hospital personnel in “modeling for a cause.” Cherie’s special guest, celebrity make-up artist and American Heart Association supporter Edgar Santos, worked with the young women of the RCC School of Cosmetology to make all the models look amazing as he coached the students through the process of completing our hair and make-up. In all the fun and excitement of the day, the purpose of the event was not lost: reminding us that heart disease is the #1 killer of women. 1 in 3 women die of heart disease and stroke and it’s more deadly than all forms of cancer. More deadly than cancer? I had no idea. We learned through the various expert speakers at the event that women’s symptoms are different than men’s and that we often don’t recognize them until it’s too late. Women, for instance, can often struggle with shortness of breath weeks before experiencing a heart attack. Or women experience a burning sensation in their chest area instead of sharp pains. Symptoms that can easily be disregarded or mistaken for some other less serious condition, like heartburn. Riverside’s own Ola Faye Stephens is one of those women. And a routine visit from her daughter probably saved Ola Faye’s life. She had no symptoms that she was aware of and was just resting her feet when her daughter asked her if she had any heart pains. Ola Faye said no. Her daughter, an anesthesiologist, returned home but continued to call her mother urging her to see a physician. Ola Faye began to notice she had a burning sensation near her heart, but it seemed like heartburn. She noticed other small signs like exhaustion from going up and down the stairs in her home. And then she noticed something that caused her to immediately contact a cardiologist. She was on a trip and had to change planes in Dallas. While rushing from one gate to the other, she said, she was completely out of breath. “I knew it was time to visit a doctor.” Ola Faye had four blockages in her heart and needed a quadruple bypass. That was in 2000. She was 62-years-old. Four years later, Ola Faye needed another procedure, but luckily, she avoided a heart attack. Now she attends cardiac rehab twice a week at the hospital and she urges women to be aware of the symptoms, “you may experience a tightening in the chest or burning sensation, you may not necessarily have pain.” At least 1,000 of us were made aware on Saturday thanks to Cherie and her event partners. For more information on how women can maintain good heart health, visit the American Heart Association website: www.heart.org. It’s A Man’s World But…

Moreno Valley Police Officer Corporal Sheree Anthony Protects Streets With A Woman’s Touch By Rory O’Sullivan t’s Tuesday night, a slower than usual Tuesday, and restlessness is starting to set in for Moreno Valley Police Corporal Sheree Anthony. It is pitch black outside when Corporal Anthony’s radio starts to squawk, “415 public disturbance in progress is anyone available?” Anthony jumps at the chance to get some police work done especially because it involves a grandmother having issues with her granddaughter. “Whenever women are involved, I try and make sure I show up to those calls,” said Anthony. “Sometimes if it’s a woman to woman conversation I can soften the situation.” She said there is value in having a woman’s touch in some situations...but she can be heavy handed when needed. “I handle my business,” said Anthony. Anthony said she takes pride in handling her own situations and not needing one of the “guys” to bail her out of a situation. She has had to take down suspects and doesn’t have a problem using physical force to protect the city’s residents. This grandmother situation, on the other

I

hand doesn’t need any tactical takedowns. The grandmother just wants to talk and vent about her granddaughter’s jobless boyfriend who her granddaughter sneaks in the house. Anthony listens, no judgments, no rushing, just listening, allowing the grandmother to blow off steam, handing her a card, and advising the grandmother to call if any more issues occur. Anthony spends the majority of her shift listening. She only cites one person, a woman, running a red light. “Well I can’t let that go,” Anthony says with a smirk. She engages the woman, who is sorry, writes her a ticket, but advises her to go to traffic school to have the point removed. Anthony’s ability to be firm but fair is one of the qualities Moreno Valley Police Chief Joel Ontiveros commends. “Corporal Anthony is an outstanding employee, she does a wonderful job, we’re very happy to have her here,” said Chief Ontiveros. Anthony has spent the last 15 years in law enforcement and 10 with the Riverside County Sheriffs, which contracts with the city of Moreno Valley. She can remember when she first told

A Good Day at the Doctor’s Office

T

his past week I was at Kaiser M e d i c a l Center for a doctor’s appointment and ran into long time friend, Lois Carson. We had a few minutes to chat Hardy L. Brown and find out how each other is doing. I noticed that she was in a wheelchair with her caretaker son, Harry Jr. and I in my power wheelchair with my caretaker brother, Vincent. This will illustrate to those who do not us that we are moving up in age, but if you could have heard our conversation you would have thought we were in our twenty’s getting ready to do battle on some social or community issue. I was encouraging her to pick up the pen and share her thoughts and ideas on the many problems and issues facing our people and community. Lois responded back that her physical body may not be what it used to be but her mind is as sharp as ever. Lois used to write weekly columns in the American News and Black Voice News and has a lot of experience in our community that would be of value and benefit to all of us. I first met Lois at a University of California, Riverside Sociology Extension Class at the Operation Second Chance Building on Baseline. I did not know it at the time but many community people from all backgrounds and races were engaged in these types of classes all over the Inland Empire. Lois was vocal then and I learned later she was raised that way and had a degree from Wilberforce University in Ohio. Our life would forever be linked together as she encouraged my wife Cheryl to get involved with the National Council of Negro Women. Lois went on to become a National Board Member and brought Dr. Dorothy Height to San Bernardino several times and took many local Black women to Washington exposing

them to a life bigger than the one in the Inland Empire. I cannot begin to name the people I know today because of that one contact through Lois Carson. I did not know very much about the Catholic Church until Lois as a member of St. Anthony’s Church in San Bernardino had them form a gospel choir. Lois invited the entire community to come to their Black History Program and they showed out. Lois had some help from other members such as Wilma Cochran, Harry and Jeanette Rheubottom, Warren Watson just to name a few. It was not just a choir but also one of the best in San Bernardino. My daughter Lynn Renee joined the conversation and told Mrs. Carson that she still had the letter from working in her campaign to

be elected as the first African American on the San Bernardino Community College Board of Trustees. Because of women like Lois coming in and out of our home on a regular basis it is no wonder our girls are active in so many community organizations and have opinions on issues that others might remain silent. I told Lois that I had a few pictures of her and even Harry, she responded I would like to see them because Harry was always taking pictures and she has very seldom in any of the ones she had. It was a very meaningful short visit with Lois but one I will not forget because she has brought so much to my family and life and I hope to start reading her thoughts of experience and wisdom. It was a good day at the doctor’s office.

Make Me a Woman

O

ne of my sheroes is Sojourner Truth. A brilliant but illiterate woman, she was a great orator and powerful presence who possessed great courage and determination. I often wear a pendant with her image and words: “If women want any rights more than they’s got, why don’t they just take them, and not be talking about it.” An unwavering defender of women’s rights and an abolitionist, Sojourner continues to fuel my determination to fight for equality for women, people of color, and children left behind. She was born into and lived nearly three decades in slavery but dedicated her life to combating slavery and gender inequality and second-class citizenship. She never gave up talking about or fighting for justice and equality. Sarye Huggins is a high school senior who knows her Black history and has also been inspired by Sojourner Truth. Read a few lines from her spoken word poem “Make Me a Woman”: Make me a woman in this world of poverty and deceit. They’ll know I’m a woman by the sounds of determination coming from my feet . . . Just make me a woman. Don’t you think the time has come? I can hear my ancestors summoning me by the sounds of their drums. A woman, me? Imagine that. Once you grant me this wish, I’m never turning back. She also writes that she knows “strong women run through my blood”—but her journey towards becoming a strong, confident young woman has not been easy. Sarye lives in Brooklyn, New York’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, a community disproportionately plagued by poverty and violence. Her teacher explains, “She’s survived ‘Bed-Stuy, do or die’—that’s the motto of our neighborhood.” Sarye’s mother, a teacher, died from a brain tumor when Sarye was two. Her father was frequently part of her early life, and she was raised by a beloved aunt. As a smart, shy girl attending some of the poorest and roughest schools in New York City Sarye didn’t always feel she fit in. Although she won awards in elementary school for being an outstanding student she also endured a lot of teasing and bullying from her peers and harbored much of the pain inside. In middle school things got worse when her father stopped calling and visiting. For the first time her grades started slipping, causing her to lose her confidence, and she began trying desperately to

change herself to gain acceptance by her peers. When the inner turmoil reached a breaking point she started cutting herself and described some of the pain she was feeling in another poem: I didn’t want to be smart anymore. I was no longer myself. I got angry, and placing blades to my skin just did not help. I knew that what I was doing to myself wasn’t a felony, nor was it a crime, but at the same time I didn’t realize that I was just destroying my heart, my soul, my body, and my beautiful mind. The odds were stacked against Sarye as they

Sarye Huggins

are against so many of our Black girls and boys today. Black children are the poorest children in America; every other Black baby is poor and every two minutes a Black baby is born into poverty in our wealthy nation. Black children are less likely to live in two-parent families, are more likely to be abused or neglected or enter foster care, and suffer worse health outcomes than White children. Black students fall behind in school early and do not catch up; more than 80 percent of fourth and eighth grade Black public school students cannot read or compute at grade level, and a Black high school student drops out every 33 seconds during the school year. Black children and youths are at greatest risk of being funneled into the prison pipeline and are at highest risk of gun violence, the leading cause of death among Black children and teens ages 1-19. For many of the children in Sarye’s neighborhood, these odds have already proven too much. Sarye was blessed by her aunt’s unfailing support and by caring teachers during her freshman year

of high school who began nurturing her potential. She says: “They just saw something in me that I didn’t even really see in myself at the moment, and I think that’s what I really needed.” After Sarye Marian Wright Edelman attended the Summer President, Children’s Bridge Program at Boys Defense Fund & Girls High School, her English teacher recommended she apply for the Smart Scholars Program, which would allow her to take classes at Long Island University beginning in 10th grade. She surprised herself by testing into college-level English during the entrance exam. Though still in high school, she’s maintained a 4.0 in her college classes while excelling in her high school courses. Unsurprisingly, English has remained one of her strengths—and she’s embraced writing as a way of expressing some of the feelings she struggled to hide inside. From her poem “I’m Free From It”: “I didn’t have to hide behind the bars of shame, hurt, or declaration. I could build on the things that were given to me and renovate the parts that were taken. My dreams that were deferred had me shaken up, but only to produce a better me in the making . . . I can look in the mirror and smile, embracing all my scars, marks, and imperfections, perfectly imperfect, not stressing to make the perfect impression, not ashamed, scared, nor confused because I am who I am for a reason.” Sarye is one of five extraordinary high school students the Children’s Defense Fund-New York will honor next week for beating the odds. A scholarship will help ease their way on the path to college. She knows she’s already made great strides and says, “I feel like allowing people to actually help me and to influence me to do better is what saved me.” What a privilege it is to help young people like Sarye become the strong Black women and men they want to be. All of us must change the odds and help of all of our Black girls—and boys, and all children—become the strong and contributing adults they want to be and we need them to be as we look at the security of future generations and our nation.

S

an Diego Playwright, Founder and CEO of Predestined Entertainment, LLC, Tamera L. Hill, announced her fifth major theatrical stage play, “Workplace Drama, All Play & No Work,” as it brings Brely Evans Abraham McDonald light to hysterically funny circumstances that often occur in the workplace. Workplace Drama will be making its debut in west coast cities this spring, located at The Sturges Theater in San Bernardino, CA, The Fox Bakersfield Theater in Bakersfield, CA., Long Beach Terrace, in Long Beach, CA, and Wilshire Ebel in Los Angeles, CA. Written and produced by Hill, Workplace AJ Johnson Jenson Atwood Drama features actress Brely Evans from the movie “Sparkle,” playing opposite Whitney Houston, BET’s “Being Mary Jane,” and David E. Talbert’s, “Suddenly Single,” actor Jenson Atwood, most known for his role in Oprah Winfrey’s “Their Eyes Were Watching God,” comedian AJ Johnson from the classic comedy, “Friday,” “Playa’s Club,” and Def Comedy Jam. Also starring in Workplace Drama, Adai Lamar, KJLH’s Los Angeles celebrity radio personality for the Steve Harvey Show, and actor and R & B Crooner, Abraham McDonald winner of Oprah Winfrey’s sing contest. “This is what I love to do! It is my passion, and I know I am called to do this,” states Hill. “It is my opportunity to share laughter and the good news. I use entertainment as the vehicle to spread love, laughter, and educate our community. There are so many negative things that plague our community, and a positive change is needed. I am grateful that God has gifted me with a talent of story-telling.” And as Hill likes to call it, “Theatrical Advocacy.” In 2010 My Sister’s Keeper, starring actor Tommy Ford of the comedy TV series Martin, debuted and promoted awareness of HIV/AIDs in the African American community. The play toured on the west coast between 2010 and 2012 and was a huge success. She is also the writer, producer, and director of Color Blind renamed The Matchmaker.

Is Gender Equality, Equal Pay for Women Falling on Deaf Ears? Patricia Arquette’s Oscar speech raises questions about why women lag male counterparts in wages By Corey Arvin Staff Writer ’ve never seen an image more iconic and telling of the evolution of women’s role in society than the “We Can Do It!” poster created by Howard J. Miller in 1943. As husbands and fathers defended the U.S. during wartime, women were left to fill traditional male-designated roles. This poster, which features a character called “Rosie the Riveter”, was symbolic of female empowerment for many women in the U.S. and beyond. It’s hard not to be awestruck by the poster as the woman stares back with piercing eyes, a steel smile, brimming with confidence because there no task she can’t overcome. But for all the things women like her could accomplish on their own 70 years ago, today, tough ladies of that bravado haven’t earned a fair share for their efforts. In fact, these absolute and determined women are stifled, using their brawn to chip away at a glass ceiling while too many men sit back and idly watch. Increasingly, entertainment awards season means recipients will dig deep and give recognition to a social cause, without or without relationship to their award. Last month, Patricia Arquette’s Oscar speech could have been simply noted and filed away -- there are

I

arguably many pressing issues concerning women. Arquette commanded a moment and urged, “It's our time to have wage equality once and for all, and equal rights for women in the United States of America.” The industry was abuzz after her speech because the timing of her remarks comes during a period when we are all

checking ourselves to ask if we are giving women enough respect. The news stories about domestic and sexual violence against women have been pervasive since last year. To correct these unfortunate tragedies, it really starts with confronting the core issues. The answer is more than simply “don’t harm women”, it begins with respecting women on fundamental levels. If we walk backwards from the moment when a woman is struck, before she is violated, or verbally berated, it all began with a lack of respect and parity. We have shaped a society today that directly and indirectly says that allowing a “Mad Men” culture of relegating women is, to some degree, acceptable. That has to change. On March 2, President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama hit the nail on the head as they introduced a new global initiative to bolster education of girls and young women who have little or no access to education. (We’re not even talking about quality education here, just an education). The initiative is aimed at helping girls overcome “barriers, large and small.” During his speech, Obama got it right: “Even today, in some parts of the world, girls are valued more for their bodies than their minds”. It’s true in developing nations, and to some degree, it is a persistent reality for girls and women in America. President Obama has been on to this for quite a while, long before his March 2 announcement or his unforgettable speech about continued on page 12

violence against women during this year’s Grammy Awards. The first bill he enacted was the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009, to help address unfair wage gaps between women and men. How much progress is being made since the enactment is still in question. The disparities and discrimination women endure in the workplace are quite real, distressing and staggering to say the least. In a report titled “The Gender Wage Gap: 2013”, data indicated that the ratio of a woman’s weekly full-time earnings compared to a man’s was 82.1 percent. The report, which was published by the Institute for Women and Research Policy, also showed those previous wages were just one percent lower in 2012. Some sections of academia may have issues as well. A UC campus study released this year found that women and ethnic minority faculty earned a little less than in salaries than the non-minority males. And for those women worried about how their appearance impacts their careers, there may be something to think about. A different study conducted by Jennifer Bennett Shinall, a professor at Vanderbilt Law School, in part, showed that the more a woman weighed, the smaller the chances she would work in a job that involved personal interaction. Yet, there was no difference among obese men in any field. As a man, I cannot relate to some of the pressures that a woman has to consider in the workplace, like “Was my demeanor too tough during my evaluation?”, “Will I still have a job after my maternity leave?”, “Can I still make partner if I get married?”. For as many women as there are working in male-dominated industries, there are a slew of women in industries perpetuated as “female oriented”. The only women in my life gravitated towards professions where there was a strong support system of fellow women -- my mother was a nurse and my sister a social worker. But did they dare to dream they could thrive elsewhere if they chose a different path? It’s hard to avoid these questions because we, as men, have fostered and cultivated this type of environment -- and it impacts all of us, our families, our daughters, and our sisters. No woman is a second-class citizen -- and it’s only a matter of time before the “We Can Do It!” women of the world prove that point.

Linda Chatman Washington, Educator

inda Marie Chatman Washington was born on October 20, 1938 in Chicago Illinois. She was the youngest of three and the only daughter born to the late David and Inez Chatman. From this union were brothers Edward (deceased) and Donald who resides in Texas. She often spoke of growing up under strong influences of church involvement, choir and family that would later shape her legacy of service. Linda moved to California in the late 1950s where she would study Education and Early Childhood Development at Pasadena City College. During her tenure at PCC, she would meet Robert C. Washington (deceased). The two were wed December 20, 1959. To this union were born three sons: Dwayne Earl (deceased), Darryl Erik and Dirk Edward. They remained married for 27 years. In divorce, she did not remarry. Linda served the Lord faithfully before her homecoming as a member of the A,M.E. church family. Durning her years of service she had been in membership with St. Paul San Bernardino, First Church Pasadena and most recently Allen Chapel of San Bernardino. Her service included leadership of the Young People’s Department (YPD), Sunday School, Celestial & Inspirational Choirs. Linda also directed Children’s and Youth Choirs which reflected her love of worship and inspiring a generation of children to follow In Search of iePeople The VOICE needs your help. Christ through song. Linda was an educator and followed her vision for early childhood development by establishing and operating two daycare centers in San Bernardino; Wee Wisdom and Mother Goose, respectively. For her recent time serving in this capacity, she received a certificate of honor from President Barack Obama in 2012. Linda completed her Christian race and leaves to cherish her memories, her brother Donald Chatman of Texas, sons and daughters Darryl E. Washington (April) of Miramar Florida, Dirk E. her mom that she wanted to be an officer. “She was not happy about it at first,” said Anthony. Her mother was worried about the danger but also that she wouldn’t be treated fairly because she was entering a male dominated career. Anthony who had never seen any female police officers growing up jumped at the opportunity to apply when she was informed by a friend about an opening in the department. “I always knew I wanted to help people.” Soon after, her mother saw the positive impact she was making in her community, Anthony’s mother became her biggest supporter. Anthony has had to make sacrifices. Like many career women she hasn’t gotten around to

starting a family. “I think about it all the time,” she said. “Did I make the right decisions?” Anthony, not only has her BA from Cal Poly Pomona, but also received a Master’s Degree from National University in Public Administration. Even with all of Anthony’s accomplishments she “hates,” being called a role model. “If you need me I’m there.” However, she acknowledges her role in helping to show young women that they can do whatever they want in life if they apply themselves and work hard for it. “At the end of the day I don’t have any regrets. I love the decisions I’ve made.”
