hen Robert Putnam published his groundbreaking study Bowling Alone, The Collapse and Revival of American Community in 2000, it found a large and eager audience. The book, illustrating how Americans have become disengaged from the democratic process, argues that our diminished social capital has left our communities impoverished. “We know our neighbors less, meet with friends less frequently, and belong to fewer organizations, “ he says. This decline of “social capital” undermines the active civil engagement that a strong democracy requires from its citizens. He uses bowling as a metaphor. Although the number of people who bowl has increased, he says, the number of people who bowl in leagues has decreased. If people bowl alone, they do not participate in social interaction and civic discussions that might occur in a league environment. The newly formed “group” “The Fellas” is an example of Putnam’s metaphor in action: they have formed their own league and work as a collective to achieve more than they could if they only worked as individuals. The first time I heard of “The Fellas” was through a photograph sent out as part of a press release, and I was very surprised because nestled in the middle of the group of young men was my own brother Hardy. I immediately wondered why he hadn’t told me anything about them. Who they were? What they did? I recognized all the young men in the photograph (by the way it’s the one on this week’s cover). As individuals I knew their accomplishments: Terrance Stone, for example, has successfully led Young Visionaries, a non-profit organization that has assisted over 14,000 young people in San Bernardino since 2001. Joseph Williams, another “member” of the group, continues to train the next generation of public servants and civically minded citizens through Youth Action Project. But as a group, I wasn’t too sure what they did. So I called my brother and asked him what “The Fellas” is exactly. His reply left me with more questions than answers. It seems they meet to provide support to each other, to discuss ways they can collaborate through their organizations, and to work in a more “organic” way to help develop the next generation of leaders. There is no written mission statement. No officers. No official organization. Just a group of guys who meet regularly at the back of a restaurant, or in someone’s office, or just hang back after a meeting of a more organized group and talk, share ideas, plot and plan. Instead of a lack of “social capital” I see “The Fellas” as a civically engaged group of young leaders not only working to lift themselves up, but also working to lift up others. So far, they have had some major successes. One, in particular, I personally witnessed was when two of their organizations teamed-up and were awarded a grant to help thousands of students and families develop models of success through resiliency training. These young men clearly understand that bowling as a team is more productive than bowling alone. I expect even more exciting announcements and developments from their collaboration and applaud them for their vision. Black Vegetarians At Lower Risk For Heart Disease

Loma Linda

A

4

VOICE | APRIL 17, 2014 | theievoice.com

mong more than 26,000 Black Seventh-day Adventists, those who are vegetarians are at lower risk for heart disease, compared with their meat-eating counterparts, according to results of a new Loma Linda University Health study. The study, available online now in the journal Public Health Nutrition, compared the cardiovascular risk factors between Black vegetarians and non-vegetarians who are part of the ongoing Loma Linda University Adventist Health Study-2 (AHS-2). AHS-2, funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is a long-running study of members throughout North America of the Seventhday Adventist Church focusing on nutrition, lifestyle, and health outcomes. The Seventh-day Adventists are a unique study subject because they have a wide variety of dietary habits, but in general have a very low percentage of alcohol consumption or cigarette smoking, non-dietary factors that may otherwise impact the study. The new results show a hierarchy of protection received by Black participants in the study based on their eating habits: Vegans (those who completely abstain from meat and meat products) and lacto-ovo vegetarians (those who consume eggs and dairy) were the least at risk for cardiovascular disease; followed by semi-

vegetarians (those who infrequently eat meat); pesco-vegetarians (those who eat fish); and lastly, non-vegetarians. The study results show that compared with their non-vegetarian counterparts, Black vegetarian Adventists were at less risk for hypertension, diabetes, high blood pressure, total cholesterol, and high blood-LDL cholesterol. The study was a cross-sectional analysis of the data, and does not conclusively establish cause. In the future, the study involving Black subjects also plans to look directly at heart disease experience rather than risk factors for heart disease. Patti Herring, PhD, MA, RN, associate professor at Loma Linda University School of Public Health and one of the study’s coinvestigators, said “some findings for Black Adventists are promising and we are anxious to compare Black Adventist health with the general population of Blacks. In so doing, we suspect that Black Adventists’ health will prove better in many regards, than those in the general population, particularly for the vegetarians.” “There’s a growing body of evidence that vegetarian diets lower the risk for cardiovascular diseases and other diseases,” she said, noting that AHS-2 is one of the few that has such a large number of Black participants, which is important since they generally have some of the worst health outcomes among minority populations.

inthenews Crime Victims United of California Names Assemblyman Eric Linder as its Legislator of the Year Sacramento

I

n recognition of Assemblyman Eric Linder’s commitment to support crime victims and ensure public safety, Crime Victims United of California honored him with its 2014 Legislator of the Year award at the organization’s Annual March on the Capitol. “I strongly believe that crime victims and their families should not be victimized again by their government, which in the past has often cared more about the rights of criminals,” said Linder. “The legislature must do more to ensure that public safety remains a top priority, such as avoiding the further release of dangerous felons into the community. I appreciate the honor from Crime Victims United, but I am even more appreciative of the hard work they do to give a much needed voice to crime victims.” During his tenure in the legislature, Linder has made public safety a top priority by fighting for adequate funding for law enforcement and championing measures to help give them

Assemblyman Eric Linder

additional tools. He has authored legislation to enact tougher penalties on sex offenders and make sure that truly dangerous criminals are not released early due to overcrowding and lead the fight to hold organizations that have turned a blind eye to sexual abuse accountable. “Assemblyman Linder has been a strong voice in Sacramento for victims across California,” said

Harriet Salarno, co-founder of Crime Victims United. “It is a relief to have a legislator who has the courage to stand up for our most vulnerable victims.” Mike and Harriet Salarno co-founded Crime Victims United of California when they experienced a criminal justice system that was more concerned with preserving the rights of criminals than those of victims and their families. The Salarnos’ eldest daughter, Catina Rose, was murdered “execution style” at Stockton’s University of the Pacific on her first day of school. Through its advocacy, Crime Victims United has helped enact a long list of major public policy changes such as establishing new rights for victims and passing California’s “Three Strikes Law.” Assemblyman Eric Linder, R-Corona, represents the 60th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the communities of Corona, Eastvale, Jurupa Valley, Norco, & Riverside.

inthenews CHP Senior Driving Class Aims To Keep Everyone Safe

Sacramento

T

alking with an older family member about their driving is often difficult. Most of us put off that talk until the person’s driving has become what we believe to be dangerous. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) implemented the Age Well, Drive Smart program to assist families with this issue. This program was designed to provide older drivers with the KEYS to driving safe and driving longer. California’s older driver population is numbering about 2.9 million today. It is estimated, there will be over four million residents age 65 and older in California by the year 2020. Knowing that much of this community still relies on driving as their primary means of transportation, the CHP is continuing to promote the Age Well, Drive Smart program. The program is supported by the Keeping Everyone Safe grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety. The Age Well, Drive Smart class

provides education specifically designed to help seniors tune up their driving skills, refresh their rules of the road knowledge, learn about normal age-related physical changes and how they affect driving ability. “When driving stops, mobility needs to continue, senior drivers deserve counsel and assistance in looking for other options,” said CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow. The CHP invites California’s older drivers to attend a free Age Well, Drive Smart class that provides older drivers the tools to driving safer and driving longer. The class is approximately two hours and is offered at local CHP offices as well as many senior centers within the community. The class is a great way for our seniors to educate themselves, evaluate their driving abilities, and improve their driving skills. “We remain steadfast in our mission to maintain and improve traffic safety and mobility for California’s older drivers,” continued

Age Related Sleeplessness

S

leeping pills are rarely the answer to sleeplessness. Simple self-help steps and, if necessary, treatment by a sleep specialist can often remedy insomnia. In a National Institute on Aging study of more than 12,000 people aged 65 and older, over half of the men and women reported frequent trouble with sleeping. This finding confirms what you’ve already observed: with aging, it becomes harder to get to sleep and to stay asleep. The consequences of chronic sleep disturbance are considerable. Daytime drowsiness, for example, may lead to falls and accidents. Frequent interruptions in breathing at night (sleep apnea) can strain the heart and lungs. It is therefore, important to discuss any unusual sleep problems with your physician rather than reaching for an over-the-counter sleep aid. Oftentimes, all that is needed to reduce sleeplessness is a change in behavior that can make it easier for you to sleep better and longer. Normal sleep consists of two main states REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, which is associated with dreaming and the four stages of non REM sleep. The deepest stage is referred to as delta sleep. Compared to young adults, middle-aged and elderly people spend less time in delta sleep. In fact, some elderly people cease to experience it at all. If you’ve stayed in a luxury hotel lately you’ve probably seen all the hype over Swedish “comfort sleep systems” like Tempur-Pedic, Dux Beds and Sleep Number Beds. Westin Hotel’s

‘Heavenly Bed’, the Hilton Bed and Marriott Bed are available online. New scientific research suggests the memory foam mattresses and down pillows increase air flow around the body and help to support the body’s natural curves and angles maximizing sleep comfort and responsiveness. These systems can be costly and may not solve your sleep problem. Before visiting your doctor, keep a “sleep diary” for a week or two. Include information regarding what time you go to bed and rise, how long does it take you to fall asleep, how often you wake up during the night and how long you think you sleep at night or do you take naps during the day, are drowsy or fall asleep during the day. Your doctor may order a sleep study, in which you sleep overnight in a lab while your sleep pattern and vital signs are monitored. Avoid coffee, tea, alcohol or chocolate late in

the evening. Don’t read or watch TV in bed. Go to bed and get up at the same time each day. Some patients report sex, light exercise, deep breathing and aromatherapy helps. For short term insomnia related to stress or anxiety from an unusual event in your life (i.e. death, illness, divorce) your physician may prescribe a sleep aid.

inmyopinion Stan Sniff “ A man of his Word” for Sheriff of Riverside County

T

he political season is once again fast approaching and the candidate field has some seeking re-election and some newcomers to the political arena. If there is one candidate who deserves re-election in Riverside County, it is Hardy L. Brown Sheriff Stan Sniff. Since I have known him he has remained true to his word. He stated he wanted to be a sheriff that had a staff that reflects the diversity of the county when it came to race and gender in all ranks within the department. We helped him put the word out that if you wanted a career in law enforcement then Sheriff Sniff was ready to give you a fair shot providing you meet the qualifications. They came and he hired those who qualified

and from all of the feedback I have heard, they are glad they took him and us at his word. Not many leaders in law enforcement live up to what they say when first hired as a chief of police or sheriff. The sheriff’s department started out several years ago to change its image when it came to the African American and Latino communities. They did outreach through the Black Voice News with strategic planning by BPC Media Works. They held many meetings with top leadership. I must say it has paid off for the sheriff who has kept his word. And for those Blacks, Latinos and women in the department, he placed them in the pipeline to gain access to those experiences necessary for advancement. One such person is the newest member of his executive team Chief Deputy Shelley A. Kennedy-Smith. Yes it is easy to recommend Sheriff Stan Sniff for reelection: for he is a man of his word. Don’t Be Cruel But Show Patience, Understanding And Tolerance

I

just read an article of April 7, 2014 about some fans giving the legendary blues singer B.B. King the blues at a performance in St. Louis because of his talking when they thought he should be singing. The article pointed out that King is 88-years-old and the crowd wanted him to sing like he was in his early years. People can be so cruel to our senior population especially those with some form of physical limitation or a disability. I know this is one reason

many seniors limit their contact with the public because the public can be cruel and intolerant or impatient with them. Not only the public but in some cases family members can demonstrate impatience as we learn from accounts of abuse of the elderly by family members. However, back to BB King whom I heard during a concert held at Cal State San Bernardino a few years ago at the invitation of President Albert Karnig, I noticed that BB used a chair while

performing but I did not expect to see him moving all over the stage or his voice to be strong. I used the performance to reminisce on back in the day when I was younger and I could dance to his music. Now all I can do is listen and move my shoulders as I sit in my power chair. When I want to hear his old performances, I put on a CD or dial him up on You Tube and watch his videos. And as Elvis Presley sang in his song back in 1956: “Don’t Be Cruel”.

pointofview Letting Corporations Skate on Taxes Undermines Life on Main Street

T

he Great Recession “officially” ended almost five years ago, but looking at many communities across the country, you wouldn’t believe it. Ten million people are still searching for work, and more than 15 million families have lost their homes to foreclosure. Classrooms are more crowded, roads need repair, and states and cities struggle to meet growing needs as Congress imposes an austerity agenda. Unless you run a wealthy corporation, you are likely experiencing an America in crisis. Many politicians spin this as a “spending” crisis, claiming, “There just isn’t any money.” Nonsense. Corporate profits are at an all-time high. The stock market has soared along with CEO bonuses, and yet corporate taxes have fallen to about a fifth of their profits. They are bailing on their responsibility to contribute to the public structures that make their commercial activities profitable. The Disappearing Corporate Tax Base, a new report by our two organizations, shows that when corporations don’t pay their fair share of taxes, Main Street suffers. On average, one-third of state budgets depend on revenue distributed by the federal government. As corporations have lobbied for – and won – loopholes, deductions and credits, the amount they have paid in federal income taxes in the past decades has plummeted. This means less revenue is available for federal aid to states. More than 600,000 public jobs on the state and city level have been eliminated since 2009 – that’s fewer teachers, first responders, and road repair crews at work in our communities. In particular, money for schools, roads and environmental protection

has fallen by 29.7 percent between 2008 and 2013 (after adjusting for inflation). As a result, two-thirds of the states are spending less per pupil on education this year than they were before the recession began. At the state level, corporations have been lobbying hard for cuts to state corporate income tax rates and for increased subsidies. Among the 46 states that have state corporate income taxes, 34 of them collected less corporate income tax revenue in 2012 than in 2008 (after adjusting for inflation). By demanding state economic development subsidies to maintain or expand operations in a state, they manage to drain an additional $80 billion from state coffers annually, according to The New York Times. It wasn’t always this way. In the 1950s, when Republican Dwight Eisenhower was president, corporations paid almost half of their profits in federal taxes, which amounted to approximately a third of the federal budget. These funds were used to build the nation’s interstate highway system and expand aid to the states. Corporations thrived, the middle class grew, and public services were strengthened. Today, our economy is five times larger, corporations are delivering record profits to shareholders, yet they pay on average less than 20 percent of those profits in federal income taxes. And those taxes amount to less than a tenth of the federal budget. While corporations are thriving, the public services we all depend on are suffering. This system is fundamentally flawed, and we believe those that have done well in America should do right by America.

By closing loopholes for shifting jobs and profits offshore, ending deductions for lavish executive compensation, placing a small sales tax on Wall Street financial transactions and restoring state income Katherine McFate tax rates, we could raise several hundred billion dollars a year. We could use just $36 billion to rehire the teachers, firefighters, police, librarians, parks and recreation staff and many other public servants whose jobs were eliminated through George Goehl budget cuts. Another $125 billion would fund the restoration of our deteriorated roads, bridges, school buildings, dams and water systems, creating 2.5 million new jobs. Politicians, flush with corporate campaign contributions, tell us we can’t afford to make these investments. We say we can’t afford not to. It’s time for Congress to demand that corporate America step up its contribution to the public systems that ensure our economy works for everyone.

Katherine McFate is President and CEO of the Center for Effective Government. George Goehl is the Executive Director of National People’s Action.

oday’s youth can only learn so much in a school environment. And with the recent budget cuts, oversized classrooms, shortage of teachers, and lesson plans geared towards passing state mandated tests, where do these youths go to learn valuable life lessons, developing work skills, and making responsible choices? What we often forget is the positive difference mentors make in the lives of young people. But unless there are those mentors in the community and programs tailored specifically to aid not only the youths, but also the community-at-large, where is one to go? For today’s youth, valuing not only lessons learned in the classroom, but also those learned through real life experiences, a single helping hand can often make a significant difference. But it is not only about helping those in need. It is also about gaining meaningful life experiences, about learning leadership, and about grounding oneself.

In the Inland Empire, a group of men known as “The Fellas” are making a difference through social responsibility and community service. Their tireless service is an integral part of the Inland Empire’s transformational change. Meeting on a regular basis, the group started five years ago discussing issues and how they could work together in the community. Their target was to begin talking with people of all generations. “We talk about leadership in the community, career development and within career development, we’re talking about how to inspire and train others onto the next level of their career; not only getting the job,” stated Dr. Ricky Shabazz. “We’re working with 18 year-olds up to 50 year-olds in transitioning professional and political careers. We’re merging education, business, and the political,” he continued. This group of leaders began working with corporate, educational and community leaders including Westside Action Group, California

State University, San Bernardino, San Bernardino Valley College and the University of California, Riverside to “bridge the gap between all the Inland Empire communities,” stated Terrance Stone. “But it’s not limited to these institutions and African Americans,” says Jonathon Buffong. The first question the group asked themselves was how do they reach out to a larger community? “We’re working in partnership with the Asian and the Latino communities as well. The goal is to be that regular ongoing group of people. I like to call it ‘organic collaboration’ because when you begin working together, things begin happening,” says Hardy Brown II. “We work in Moreno Valley, Riverside, Perris, Corona and the Upper Desert. This is really a lot larger than just in San Bernardino. The Inland Empire as a whole is a region that needs collaboration to grow in the areas of Jobs and Education.

or at least one year the center of college basketball is in Storrs, Connecticut. This week Men’s and Women’s program at the University of Connecticut claimed NCAA National Championships. Though both teams are historic powers they both had help from Southern Californians. They are part of the new American Athletic Conference. The men are led by second year head coach Kevin Ollie and Former Taft high school standout De Andre Daniels. The road was not an easy one-In early March they lost to Louisville by some 34 points-They were given a seventh-seed in the East Regional. They went through every major conference in the country that was in their way. St. Joseph (A10), Villanova (Big East), Iowa State (Big 12), Michigan State (Big 10) and “The Clinchers” in the Final Four included Florida and Kentucky of the SEC. They defeated the Wildcats 60-54. Ollie, a Crenshaw High and UCONN graduate, led the Huskies to their second title in four years and the 4th in the schools history. “ We don’t chase National Championships,” said Ollie. “National championships chase us.” It took just 19 months after beginning the job that Ollie got his first National Title. The team was not allowed to participate in last year’s tourney due to academic difficulties. He’s is the second coach to lead his team to the title in his first year in the tournament. Steve Fisher of Michigan did it in 1989. Though Jordan had a mild title game with 8 points and 6 rebounds it was the road to the title game where he excelled. The 6-8 Junior had 27 points and 12 rebounds against Michigan State in the regional final. He then added 20 points 10 rebounds in a semi-final win against top-seeded Florida. “He was amazing,” said teammate Niels Giffey. “He appeared to get every ball, he made a big difference. “Kevin is one of the great the great guys of all time”, said Kentucky head coach John Calipari. “I hate losing but I am happy he won. The UCONN women were just as dominant riding a 45 game win streak they routed Notre Dame by a final score of 79-58. The loss ended the Irish 37-game win streak in front of 17,519 at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. The Lady Huskies were led by national player of the year Breanna Stewart who had a game

high 21 points. Senior Center Stefanie Dolson had 18 points and a game high 16 rebounds. “Right at the beginning. That opening tap, our team had such confidence when we came out for this game, we went into it, so excited, so pumped”, said Dolson. “Everyone said we had a lot of pressure on our back, we went in and were loose, played great, and we knew right at the beginning,” Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis (Anaheim Hills) the ‘smooth one’ chipped in 18. She has had an up and down year missing several games with an elbow injury and a bout with mono. Despite all that, the junior came back to help lead UCONN to its fifth perfect season. The Huskies were perfect in 1995 (350), 2002 (39-0), 2009 (39-0), 2010 (39-0) According to The Hartford Courant and research by Five Thirty Eight, UConn has the best combined men’s and women’s college basketball program since 1951. The men and women combine for a .771 winning percentage. Tennessee is second (.747) followed by Duke (.734), UNC (.705), UCLA (.698), Stanford (.693) and Kentucky (.689). UCONN joins Tennessee 2007-08 and USC 198384 as back to back Champions in Division 1 Geno Auriemma passed Pat Summit of Tennessee with his ninth.

Crenshaw High and U CONN graduate Kevin Ollie gives advice to Junior De Andre Daniels (2) from Taft H.S.

Kevin Ollie has done a lot in a short period of time as an assistant and Head Coach. “I love the university and I want to be here for a long time” said Ollie.

Second Harvest President & CEO William Carnegie

illiam Carnegie, Feeding America’s 2012 Chief Executive Officer of the Year and president of Community Food Bank Inc. in Tucson, Ariz., for the past eight years, has been appointed president and chief executive officer of the Second Harvest Food Bank. Carnegie, who has spent the past 22 years in leadership roles at food banks in Michigan, Indiana and Arizona, takes over an organization that serves more than 400,000 people each month through the 400-plus nonprofit organizations Second Harvest works with. Second Harvest, part of the Feeding America network, was formed in 1980 and in that time has distributed more than 450 million pounds of food to thousands of hungry people in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. “We’re thrilled to have a leader of William Carnegie’s stature joining Second Harvest and helping to fortify our position as one of the most respected non-profit organizations in the Inland Empire,” said Greg Wilkinson, Second Harvest’s board chairman. “With more than 750,000 people in the two counties living under economic disadvantage, our challenge has never been greater.” Carnegie joins Second Harvest from Community Food Bank, where he had been president and chief executive office since January 2006. He had held a similar role at the Food Bank of Northern Indiana for the previous 12 years. He began his food bank career as director of operations for Second Harvest Gleaners Food Bank in Grand Rapids, Mich. in 1992. Carnegie received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Hawaii Pacific University, and masters degree in nonprofit administration from the University of Notre Dame, graduating cum laude. He also participated in the Harvard University Executive Education Program, and has been a faculty associate at Arizona State University. “We have a serious hunger problem in Riverside and San Bernardino counties, and I look forward to working with our partners, donors and people we serve throughout the Inland Empire,” Carnegie said. Second Harvest also announced the appointment of John Crooks as vice president of operations. Crooks joins Second Harvest from the West Texas Food Bank in Odessa, Texas, where he has been director of operations and programs.
