n the interest of full disclosure I must admit the extent of my relationship to the University of California, Riverside. It is where the VOICE started over 42 years ago. It’s where I received both my master’s and doctorate degrees. I taught my first college classes and I met my husband there. He earned his bachelor’s degree on the campus and is a professor in the Department of Theatre. Yes, my opinion of UCR is somewhat biased. During my seven-year tenure in graduate school during the 1990’s, there were five African-American women earning doctorate degrees in English, which for a relatively small school was pretty remarkable. Dr. Venetria Patton is an associate professor at Purdue. Dr. Carol Henderson is a professor at the University of Delaware. Dr. Sandra Grayson is a professor at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. Dr. Kwakiutl Dreher is an associate professor at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. And Dr. Stephanie Dunning, who I helped recruit while still a graduate student, is an associate professor at Miami University of Ohio. This all happened well before UCR was considered a model for student diversity. Long before the university gained a reputation for graduating African-American students at a higher rate than white students. And long before the university’s Black student population was larger than any other UC campus. But I considered it then, and continue to see the campus today, as a unique place, probably the most significant public asset in the region. Just this week Time Magazine agreed with me, listing UCR as the #1 university in the country based on the new White House metrics presented by the Obama Administration: graduation rate, tuition, and the percentage of students who receive Pell Grants. Late last week the campus celebrated the investiture of Chancellor Kim Wilcox, UCR’s ninth leader since the campus was founded 60 years ago. During his investiture remarks Chancellor Wilcox presented the history of the public land grant university and how UCR is a shining example of the vision President Abraham Lincoln and Congressman Justin Morrill had in mind when they developed the concept in the 1860s. In closing, I’d like to share that portion of his speech with you:
Many have called the land-grant system America’s most original and most important contribution to higher education. I consider it one of the greatest contributions to our nation and to the world. I’ve also found a place that continues to live the values of Morrill and Lincoln. Where over half of our students are among the first in their generation to attend college, where students from all backgrounds are welcome, and where everyone succeeds – our students graduate at the same rates, regardless of racial and ethnic category or income level. These amazing attributes are a direct legacy of our land-grant roots and emblematic of the commitment that UCR has to our students and to all of the citizens of the state. We continue to prove Lincoln correct: “regular citizens,” not just the privileged few, have a place in higher education and a place in shaping our future. UCR is also more connected to its community than most other research universities. While our scientists, scholars and engineers work at the cutting edge of knowledge, much of that work is informed by, and focused on, the needs and issues of the region and the state. And I’m happy to report that the campus is increasingly being recognized for these accomplishments – for the qualities that make UC Riverside what it is. Over the course of the past year, for example, UCR has ranked highly on measures that include both our research prowess and our impact on students, particularly in terms of social mobility – just the kinds of things Abraham Lincoln and Justin Morrill wanted us to be good at! So by staying true to Morrill’s aspirations, while continuing to evolve in their implementation, we have emerged as a new model for higher education in America today.

Month-long Celebration Increases Disability Awareness Local organization rallies community in support of developmental disabilities by embracing color and fun San Bernardino
I
nland Regional Center of Riverside and San Bernardino Counties (IRC) organized and participated in colorful events – honoring those with developmental disabilities by wearing the official colors of Down syndrome, Epilepsy and Autism during the months of March and April. IRC’s celebration culminated at the Inland Empire 66er’s annual Disabilities Awareness Night. The organization’s colorful display was all part of IRC’s mission to engage its community and build awareness and inclusion for those with developmental disabilities. This year, IRC employees throughout the Inland Empire participated by donning colorful clothing from head to toe. The technicolored-team came together in multi-colored socks for World Down syndrome Day on March 21, purple to raise awareness for Epilepsy on March 26, and blue for World Autism Awareness Day on April 2. “Life isn’t always written in black and white. Sometimes, we face challenges and make an effort to find ‘colorful solutions’ to find happiness each day,” said Inland Regional Center Director, Carol Fitzgibbons. “At Inland Regional Center, we help our consumers do just that by celebrating their differences and unique abilities. In the end, at IRC we believe it’s our differences that make

the world a more vibrant place.” The center’s month-long awareness celebration culminated at the 66ers San Manuel Stadium where IRC painted the town red sporting the California League Champions team colors for Disabilities Awareness Night on April 12. The evening was an inspirational event held in honor of the globally recognized World Autism Awareness Month. Six of IRC’s Board of Trustees members were honored during the game for their dedication to developmental disabilities
with their names announced and displayed on the 66ers Jumbotron video board. IRC was just one of many organizations for people with developmental disabilities that participated in this event. Attendees had the chance to play with Bernie and the team’s athletes in a pre-game clinic before the first pitch, making it an annual family-favorite event for IRC consumers and staff. he San Bernardino Branch of the NAACP will host “A New Beginning Housing Workshop” for San Bernardino residents. The goal of the educational workshop is to help reduce the number of pending foreclosures by giving attendees access to the latest government and non-government financing programs. Homeowners that owe more than their property is worth will receive on the spot help with their existing loans. Homeowners who qualify could see a reduction in their monthly payment. Prospective homebuyers will get access to new programs offering down payment assistance. The A New Beginning Housing Workshop will be held at the Inghram Community Center, 2050 North Mt. Vernon Avenue, San Bernardino on Saturday, April 26, 2014 beginning at 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The speakers will be NID Counseling Agency, Wells Fargo, and Institutional Leaders. “Some people think that the number of foreclosures played a big part in the San Bernardino bankruptcy,” said Housing Committee Chair Morsell Johsnon. He continued, “The negative impact of foreclosures impacted the
Black and Latino communities the most.” According to national statistics, San Bernardino County along with Riverside County led the nation in foreclosures.

They will be regularly held on the first Monday of each month on the second floor of the Assessor-County ClerkRecorder and Treasurer-Tax Collector offices at 38-686 El Cerrito Rd., Palm Desert. The office is located north of the Washington Street I-10 exit. “We were happy to work with Supervisor Benoit to establish an appeals board hearing location in Palm Desert which will better serve the our desert constituents which we were both elected to serve,” said Assessor-Clerk-Recorder Larry Ward. Every year, the Assessor provides valuation notices to property owners. When property owners desire to challenge the Assessor’s enrolled value of their property, they can submit to the Assessor a “Decline-in-Value Reassessment Application” at no charge, or they may file an “Application for Changed Assessment” form with the Clerk of the Board, Division of Assessment Appeals along with a $30 filing fee to request an appeal hearing. The Assessment Appeals Division of the Clerk of the Board of Supervisors, an independent department from the Assessor’s office, oversees the assessment appeals process, schedules and facilitates the hearings. Applicants can present their case for a lower valuation before a three-member Assessment Appeals Board, a panel of fellow taxpayers, or a hearing officer who are appointed by the Board of Supervisors. Hearings are public meetings that are recorded and attended by a representative of the Assessment Appeals Division of the Clerk of the Board, appraisal staff from the Assessor’s office as well as deputy county counsel. State law provides for a hearing to be scheduled within 2 years from the date the application is filed. Applicants are required to attend the hearing or their application will be denied. Commercial, industrial, and business property assessment appeals will still be held in Riverside.

Technology Summit Promotes Leadership Diversity in STEM Related Career Fields
T
ranscendence, a nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming the lives of under-served youth through collaborative endeavors, is pleased to announce the Inspire Technology Summit for high school students. Sponsored by Edison International, the Summit will take place Saturday, May 10th on the campus of Claremont’s prestigious Harvey Mudd College. The full-day Summit is designed to inspire the next generation of Information Technology leaders and to identify paths for increasing diversity in technology career fields. “We have a tremendous responsibility to increase the numbers of women and minority groups in technology and math related careers,”
said Michael D. Lacy, Board President for Transcendence. “We believe direct engagement between the youth in our community and technology leaders from the corporate world will be a catalyst to enhance opportunities for underserved students”. Inspire is designed as an active response to data indicating that many minority groups and females are dramatically underrepresented in technology related fields and corresponding leadership positions. The summit will provide inspiration from leaders in technology roles, networking opportunities and resources necessary to excel in technology-driven careers. According to data compiled at Georgia Tech’s
College of Computing, in 2013 only 22 percent of California students taking the Advanced Placement exam in computer science were girls, 1.5 percent were Black, and 8 percent were Hispanic. Students may register to attend the summit or apply for a scholarship by visiting www. WeAreTranscendence.org or by calling (909) 300-5428. The summit will start at 9:00 a.m. and conclude at 4:00 p.m. on May 10th. All high school students are welcomed to participate. Minority students, female students, first generation college candidates, and students from local underserved communities are especially encouraged to attend.

inmyopinion What Is In The Water That Donald Sterling, Clyde Bundy and some Members Of Congress are Drinking?
D
onald Sterling, owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, has opened up another Pandora’s box of blatant racism when a recorded statement: “don’t bring Blacks to the ball game, you can sleep with them, hang with them but just don’t do it Hardy L. Brown in public,” was released to TMZ. On tape, Sterling told his then girlfriend that he did not want her posting pictures of her with Black people such as Magic Johnson or bringing them to his ball games. He also went on to say that he gives his players food, cars, houses, and other things as though they do not work for their salary they earn as professional athletes. This really reminded me of the slave master mentality of owning people without compensating them for their labor - picking cotton, tobacco, cutting sugar cane, harvesting bananas, lettuce, strawberries or picking grapes. In other words, be grateful to me for allowing you the privilege of working for me. Sterling has a history of discrimination going back to 2006 when the U.S. Department of Justice settled a case against him for $2.7 million for housing discrimination against Asians, Latinos

and African Americans. In the suit, it is alleged that Sterling said Hispanics smoke, drink too much, and hang out around the property while Blacks smell and attract vermin. In other words, he compares Blacks to dogs and other animals that attract fleas, bed bugs, and other nuisance insects that are hard to get rid of. The great Elgin Baylor sued Sterling for employment discrimination back in 2009 when he worked as the General Manager for the Clippers, and Sterling told him to sign up poor Blacks boys from the south and pay them low salaries and get a White coach. Sterling reminds me of the slave master that had slaves as property, worked them from sun up to sun down then would rape their females at night. This is what he was telling his racially mixed girlfriend when he told her to do what you like but do not bring attention to what I like in YOU people. The reason I mention the water is because some members of congress are behaving in the same way when it comes to their actions toward the nations first African American president, Barack Obama. Even when Obama presents some solutions to problems that they once supported when the president was White, they now reject them. They call him a liar during the State of the Union address, which had never been done before. A total disrespect and disregard for the nation’s highest office.
Then I thought perhaps there is some waterborne racism virus the CDC hasn’t told us about, when I heard the recent comments by the “rebel” Nevada rancher Cliven “Clyde” Bundy who very publicly and unapologetically asked “Were ‘Negroes” better off as slaves?” To which he believes the answer is yes. We now know that Donald Sterling has admitted to making the racist statements and shows no remorse in saying what he said. To him it is about money and using people to make it by any means. I am happy to see the NBA Commissioner Adam Silver take such a strong stance against Sterling and address the issue as a national one that is greater than basketball. I also want to commend Mayor Kevin Johnson of Sacramento for accepting the challenge to be the spokesperson for the NBA players on this issue. And Coach Doc Rivers for his leadership in helping to keep the young players focused on their job while addressing the issue. It is equally important that the elected leaders of the city of Los Angeles weigh in on the matter and they should. When you think of the tax breaks these owners get from taxpayers to have a team play in their city, it is an issue that should be of concern to all citizens. It is great to see corporate advertisers say we cannot be a part of this. Like Mayor Johnson said, “let this be warning to other bigots in America, if Donald Sterling can fall, so can you.”

pointofview Blackballin’ Clippers
S
unday I sat and watched the Los Angeles Clippers lose, and even as a Lakers fan it was painful to watch what happened on and especially off the court. A week ago my play Blackballin’ completed a two week run at the University of California, Riverside. Blackballin’ uses historic moments in iconic American sports: football, baseball, basketball and boxing, to explore past and present race relations. When UCR’s Department of Theater decided to make Blackballin’ a part of our 2013-14 season, I immediately began wondering about the relevance of the issues addressed in a play I wrote almost 20 years ago. It was 1995 when I wrote what I sometimes call my “angry Black man play”, during my first year of graduate school at UCLA; it also happened to be the last time the UCLA Bruins won the Men’s NCAA Championship. I remember celebrating at UCLA’s North Campus Student Center with a few dozen students and feeling the elation sports can evoke - that feeling of being a part of something greater than yourself. Yet I was writing a play that used iconic American sports: football, baseball, basketball and boxing to address issues of race relations still plaguing our country, and in so doing pointed out the ironic nature of sports. The play was selected the best written by graduate students that year and won the ASK/UCLA Playwriting Award which included a reading at London’s Royal Court Theatre.
Blackballin’ addresses issues ranging from the lack of Black quarterbacks in the NFL to the billions made by the NCAA on the backs of “student athletes” - many of whom were poor Black youth not allowed to profit from their labor; to the importance of one’s image – “Image is everything” which was a popular catch phrase from an advertising campaign for Cannon cameras during that time. I guess my concerns about the relevance of the issues addressed in Blackballin’ almost two decades ago were unfortunately unfounded. I once read somewhere that sports are often times used as the means of embedding the mores of a society into its population. So that the things a society values is reinforced through ritual and repetition: Three strikes and you’re _____, never hit below the _____, that’s the way the ball ______, I’m sure you were able to fill in the blanks above without a second thought; and more importantly you probably believe that there is nothing wrong with adapting these rules as part of our daily lives, after all they must be true, just look at baseball, boxing and basketball. So 1994 California decided to take “three strikes” off the baseball diamond and put it into law. (The essence of the Three Strikes law was to require a defendant convicted of any new felony, having suffered one prior conviction of a serious felony to be sentenced to state prison for twice the term otherwise provided for the crime. If the
defendant was convicted of any felony with two or more prior strikes, the law mandated a state prison term of at least 25 years to life). I wonder if this law would have passed if baseball players got 4 or even 5 strikes instead of 3. Professor Rickerby Although I wasn’t Hinds, UCR surprise at the “alleged” racist words spoken by Donald Sterling, I still found it painful as a Black man to hear these embedded prejudices articulated. I often say to my wife that most of us as human beings spend all of our lives becoming who we are, and I believe this is no different with Sterling. He was probably a young racist in the 50’s, a middle aged racist in the 70’s, a Reagan racist in the 80’s (That’s when the rich got richer and then “trickled” on the poor and called it rain), and now he’s a rich old racist… with a bunch of “Negroes” laboring for him. To paraphrase Denny Green – former “Black” coach of the Arizona Cardinals: “He is who we thought he was,” and we DID NOT let him off the hook!

Diversity at UCR: More than Just Talk The university continues to be a leader in the UC system with undergraduate African-American admissions By Corey Arvin Staff Writer t a time when university officials are trying to build campuses that reflect the “melting pot” of America, University of California, Riverside (UCR) administrators have bolstered the school’s diversity enrollment among undergraduates and are finding new ways to appeal to prospective students. One of the school’s selling points, African-American enrollment, continues to see modest gains and recognition in the UC system. “I love it,” said Emily Engelschall, Director of Undergraduate Admissions, referring to UCR’s campus diversity. “I have to say it is one of my top ten talking points when I am talking with students, parents, counselors ... Being able to offer a diverse
A
educational experience to students coming in is invaluable. It is critical for any student to be able to have an educational experience that will mirror their experience when they graduate. And when I talk about diversity, it’s not just race, it is also culture. (UCR) is a diverse campus and that enriches the education experience,” she added. For the Fall 2013 and 2014 admission cycles, African-Americans represented about 4.6% of total admissions at UCR. Total African-American student admissions increased from 784 students in 2013 to 815 students for 2014. Hispanic and Latino admissions, as well as Asian admissions also increased, with 5698 Hispanic and Latino admissions for 2014, compared with 5444 in 2013. Respectively, Asian American admissions increased to 7,972 students for 2014, compared
with 7483 in 2013. Part of UCR’s ability to achieve high minority enrollments is tailoring campus tours to a prospective student’s background and interest. Prospective students are also able to experience what the student body is like and see how some of the campus organizations may appeal to them, said Engelschall. This week, Time magazine ranked UCR the top university in the U.S., based on several criteria. The ranking was based on an algorithm using data from the Department of Education’s Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System. While UCR is a first choice for some college seekers, many students who are admitted continued on page 12

Edozie Onumonu, who graduated from Los Osos High School, had his sights set on University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), UC Berkeley, and UC Santa Barbara, but wasn’t accepted. He received an invitation from UCR and decided to tour the campus. Onumonu, who is now a senior, feels the campus life experience at UCR made it a better fit for him than any of the institutions he first applied to in high school, he said. “To be completely honest, when they say UCR is the most ethnically diverse school, it really does make a difference with the bonds that you make with people and hearing their stories,” he said. Onumonu credits his enrollment at UCR with continuing to shape his outlook on diversity and culture, adding to the perspectives he has gained as a first-generation American from Nigerian parents. He also believes he established a stronger connection with other Black students on campus who share similar backgrounds as his upbringing. and partying and in college, you meet AfricanAmericans that are more about ‘I need to do this or that for my future.’ There is some comradery and understanding among African-Americans here trying to get into different fields that don’t have a lot of representation.” One of the most beneficial advantages of attending UCR has been access to student organizations for African and Caribbean immigrant students. The awareness that those organizations exist were helpful, he said. “I am a first generation American, but because I am an African-American on paper, the immigrant story gets lost. People think because we look the same they sort of lump us in this situation, but I might have more in common with a first generation American from South Korea than an African-American whose family has been here forever,” he said. UCR’s success with African-American enrollment is hardly new, according to Ken Simons, Director of African Student Programs. Simons, who has worked at UCR for more than 25 years, graduated from the university in 1983. Since then, the Black student body has remained

ewly appointed University of California Riverside (UCR) Chancellor Kim A. Wilcox said he couldn’t have asked for a more ideal situation to walk into when appointed to the position by the University of California Board of Regents on August 8, 2013. Wilcox succeeds former Chancellor Timothy White, who left the post in late 2012 to become president of the California State University system. Last week, Wilcox was invested as the 9th Chancellor of UCR. “I am fortunate to walk into a situation where a former chancellor left the university in such good shape,” Wilcox said. “I have some really big shoes to fill because not only was Chancellor White a great leader, but he is beloved on this campus. I have the pleasure of simply building on the foundation he laid over the past years.” Wilcox said his primary goal is to bring UCR into national prominence. He is excited about one aspect that should help that cause. “UCR is one of the few universities in the country where the graduation rate of African American students exceeds that of Caucasian graduates,’ Wilcox said. “I have also put in place meetings with

Wilcox: Building on ng Forward members of the national press to let them know how great the academic growth is here on our campus.” Wilcox also said UCR is unique in the fact it is a school where the core of the student body are young people relying on Pell Grants. “It is uncommon to have such a demographic thrive because the overall demographic nationwide indicates these students not likely to get into college let alone succeed at such high rates,” Wilcox said. “That says a lot about the faculty here and the dedication and attention shown to their students. I want to use this success, let it be known on a national level, and have UCR referenced to as a model for other universities to emulate.” It is the cohesive and collaborative relationship between the City of Riverside and UCR that really drew Wilcox to the school. “What really was appealing to me was the great relationship between the city and Chancellor White and the ease I am finding in maintaining that same level of cooperation,” Wilcox said. “I have to give the city high marks because they worked tirelessly to ease the strain with the increasingly large number continued on page 14

strong, but their backgrounds have shifted, he said. “Twenty-five years ago, we had AfricanAmericans from African-American families. Now, it’s not just for students of the African diaspora,” Simons said. “UCR has a 60-to-70 percent population of students that are first generation. Their parents didn’t go to school, they don’t come from affluent backgrounds. First generation students have to work and receiving financial aid and resources are important for them. When I think in terms of the African-American student experience, cultivating the youth and letting them know [faculty] are here for them lets them know that they too can be here.” Simons envisions a portion of UCR one day becoming a quasi-West Coast Historically Black College or University (HBCU). For now, to support the African-American student body, Simons’ program is pursuing partnerships with the Vines Medical Society, the Richard T. Fields Bar Association, and local NAACP chapters to help with the retention and graduation rates, he said.
Reaching out to students and partnering them with professional organizations doesn’t stop at the undergraduate level, according to Joseph Childers, PhD, Dean of the Graduate Division. The school encourages its undergraduates to advance their education if it will prepare them for their profession, he said. According to Childers, the graduate division’s admissions are not as ethnically diverse as undergraduates, but have grown significantly, with most of its African-American students enrolled in Humanities programs. “We do a number of things at the graduate level, letting them know this is a place where students can come and really pursue their dreams, especially their academic dreams. We connect students with a lot of professional organizations that are for students who are thinking of going to graduate school and many are students of color,” said Childers. “Our faculty is very aware of diversity and are working very hard to get the type of recognition they deserve,” he said.

featurestory New UCR Chancellor, continued from page 13 of students moving into the area. It created a situation where the city had to make adjustments like making legislation to deal with issues like noise, parking and they actually made changes in zoning ordinances to accommodate the university. They even increased police patrols to ensure the safety of our students. It is rare to find a city willing to work hand-in-hand with a collegiate entity.” Wilcox steps into his role at a time of great expansion on the UCR campus. The school has announced the opening of its new medical school, the creation of a new school of public policy, expanding research opportunities and the potential to broaden the campus’s international reach. Building the schools faculty is another priority for Wilcox. “The student body is growing faster than our faculty,” Wilcox said. “I really want to broaden and enrich our research programs. If we can put ourselves in position where our students are not only learning but creating as well in the research areas, that should bring in more research money and help create more capital stimulus to the local economy.” Wilcox is excited about plans to build new residence halls around the campus. According to Wilcox, the school has 22,000 students but anticipate the student population will expand to 25,000 students by 2020. As provost of Michigan State from 2005 to July 2013, Wilcox had oversight responsibilities for more than 200 academic programs, nearly 49,000 students and almost 5,000 faculty and academic staff. During that time, he implemented major institutional restructuring and strategic positioning initiatives, and helped lead a capital campaign that raised $1.4 billion. He added 100 new faculty positions, expanded the university’s two medical colleges and created the Residential College in the Arts and Humanities and the College of Music. Previously, he was dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Kansas, from 2002 to 2005, and president and chief executive officer of the Kansas Board of Regents from 1999 to 2002.

Patrick Edgett, WaitLess, Inc. A product of the San Bernardino Unified School District, Patrick Edgett went on to receive his Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from the University of California, Riverside. After having worked at Riverside-based Acorn Technology for nearly 5-years, Edgett co-founded WaitLess, Inc. in September 2013. An avid sports fan (Angels, 49ers, and The Ohio State Buckeyes), the Voice asked Edgett to contribute to our ongoing community conversation by describing his decision to run a tech startup in the Inland Empire. What is your role with wālo? I am the Co-Founder & CEO of WaitLess, Inc., the creators of wālo (previously The Waitless App). I am the business development side of the house. I spend a lot of my time spreading the word about WaitLess, getting feedback from our users, meeting with future customers, and getting to know more people in the community. How did the concept of wālo come about? My co-founder David and I had known that we wanted to go into business together for a little while and we had been waiting for the right idea and the right time. The concept started while on a drive home after a vacation with friends in San Francisco. After long waits at popular restaurants, we started tossing around the idea of building a service that would help eliminate the need to wait in lines. I called David while we were driving through the Grapevine and the next day he went out and bought a new computer and started teaching himself how to build an iPhone app. The idea has morphed since then, but the original concept started in November 2012. As a UCR grad what has been some of the challenges to run a tech startup in the Inland Empire? Community - Riverside is a great community for getting to know different business leaders. It does however lack those interested in technology specific ventures. So knowing where to start and what would be the best use of our time was difficult in the beginning.
Funding - Similarly, there aren’t a lot of technology focused investors that are available in the Inland Empire. Luckily we have been able to fund the first 8 months of the company ourselves. As we begin the process with Angel and Seed investors, we will likely have to go outside of the Inland Empire to complete our initial offering. What can the everyday consumer expect from downloading and using this app? The app is available for iPhone and Android by searching the word: walo. After downloading the user can expect to register within the app to grant them access to view wait times at all of their favorite locations in Southern California. We currently have over 13,000 locations listed in the app and are adding about 1,000 per week. One of my favorite features we are already offering for some of the restaurants is something we are calling CloudWait™. This is where users can add their name to the wait list directly through the app. How is the company marketing the app? We are currently focusing our efforts on a couple of things. First and foremost we are creating an app that will be valuable to our users. As we create more features that are valuable we promote them through social media (FaceBook, Twitter, and LinkedIn) so our users can know what to
expect from the app. We are in the process of vetting some sources of traditional avenues like print media as we near our public launch. Another place we are focusing is from the perspective of business (our customers). As we start to deliver value to them and as they become a part of the platform, we will work with them to provide data analytics, predictive scheduling, and rewards programs. Our goal when working with the businesses is to deliver tools to them that either increases revenue and/or decreases cost. As we execute that plan we see the businesses as another source helping to drive users to our app. Where do you see the company 5-years from now? And what are some of the future plans for wālo? In 5 years we will have expanded our offerings across the country and we will have started to roll out some of our “VIP” services. Imagine being able to pay to skip the line at restaurant on a Friday night. Or for some it could be more valuable to sell your place in line to the person who is trying skip the wait. With the ability to manipulate supply and demand at different intervals we will be able to create the ultimate marketplace for people’s time. With that the possibilities are limitless.
