ended last week thinking about the concept of togetherness. It started Monday when Dr. Deborah Deas, the new dean of UC Riverside’s School of Medicine, concluded her remarks to an audience full of community members with a call to action and the admonishment that “we” have to work together to serve the medically-underserved. “If you want to go fast, go alone,” she said, “If you want to go far, go together.” I quickly scribbled down the quote. I appreciated the sentiment. Four days later and four hundred miles away I sat with almost four thousand others in the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium celebrating McClatchy High School’s graduation. My niece Kennedy was among the graduating class. Kicking-off the litany of commencement speeches was California’s State Superintendent Tom Torlakson. His topic was teamwork, much like Dr. Deas earlier that week who had asked us to consider how much more we can accomplish if we work as a collective instead of individuals. His final words mirrored hers, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” I scribbled the adage down again, then circled the words almost as a silent acknowledgement of its meaning. At the time, I was thinking about graduations, and looking at the myriad of families – including ours – rallying around the recent graduates, taking not only pride in their academic accomplishments, but taking ownership to some degree in their successes, believing that our sacrifices – large or small – or our encouraging words – no matter how many or few – made the biggest difference. The theme of togetherness was definitely top of mind when I heard the news of the massacre at the Pulse LGBT Nightclub in Orlando. I was heading to the airport during Sunday’s dark morning hours when I heard the first reports that there were mass casualties in another shooting in another one of our communities. By the time I landed in Denver the number reported dead was at 20. And by the time I arrived in Ohio, my final destination, the number was at 50. Regardless of the motive, I knew the incident would be used as another example of our need for gun control, or immigration reform, or to defeat terrorism, or find improvements in mental health services…or…or…or. I knew for some, like Donald Trump, it would be an opportunity to spew more divisive rhetoric and make even more insane insinuations about immigrants and Muslims, which he did. Once the horrific incident was identified as the worst mass shooting in U.S. history, I knew it would be an opportunity for others to address historical inaccuracies and omissions, and I read post after post on social media of other hate crimes in American history where groups were terrorized by their fellow Americans and killed by the hundreds: Wounded Knee, Tulsa Race Riots, Rosewood, and others. But it was the words of Billy Manes, editor of Watermark, the voice of West Florida’s LGBT community, that resonated the most and returned me to the importance of togetherness if we are to go further as a model of democracy and freedom for others to follow: The loss is unspeakable. But the community is strong. We will survive, and so we must speak. We are a family. We will take our broken strands and weave them together, creating an even stronger tapestry of courage and life. Our enduring story will not be a tragedy. The world will see our community, the care we have for each other, and how we draw strength from that love. Our story will be one of survival, and hope, and PRIDE.

BOTS are a category of software tools long used to automate repetitive computing tasks but are now increasingly used to communicate directly with users. These artificial intelligence programs have the ability to mimic human speech to answer questions, order products and complete a variety of other tasks. Now, the federal government is exploring the possibility of using BOTS to deliver services to Americans more efficiently. Although BOTS are currently limited in the range of tasks they can perform, their functionality is expected to increase as they learn more from interactions. One possible government application for BOTS might be in relation to income tax filing—BOTS could make the tax filing process easier by customizing questions to each individual. Some California Doctors Hesitant to Prescribe Lethal Drugs Los Angeles

A

special report by CBS News recently revealed that a number of California doctors, including those that serve at Catholic hospitals are not willing to play a role in intentionally ending a life. A new right-to-die law that became effective June 9, made it legal for doctors, under stringent guidelines, to prescribe life-ending drugs for terminally ill patients. California has joined four other states that have already implemented such legislation; however, California has established more safeguards to guide the process than any of the other states.

Coping in the Aftermath of a Mass Shooting

O

nce again Americans are faced with coping in the aftermath of a mass shooting. This time it’s Orlando, Florida, scene of the worst mass shooting in U.S. history. 49 people were gunned down and more than 50 were injured. You may be struggling to understand how a shooting could occur and why such a terrible thing would happen. There may never be satisfactory answers to these questions. We do know, though, that it is typical for people to experience a variety of emotions following such a traumatic event. You may feel that the world is a more dangerous place today than you did yesterday. It will take some time to recover your sense of equilibrium. This is especially true when the event is human-caused with the intent of harming others. Meanwhile, you must go on living your daily life. You can strengthen your resilience — the ability to adapt well in the face of adversity — in the days and weeks ahead. Here are some tips: • Attend to self care. While it may seem counterintuitive to think about taking care of yourself first, you cannot be of service to others if you are unstable. Monitor all of your physical health needs - being sure to eat, sleep, exercise, and (if possible) maintain a normal daily routine. Pay attention to your emotional health. Remember that a wide range of feelings during these difficult times are common. Know that others are also experiencing emotional reactions and may need your time and patience to put their feelings and thoughts in order. • Try to recognize when you or those around you may need extra support. It is not uncommon for individuals of all ages to experience stress reactions when exposed (even through media) to shootings or mass

violence. Changes in eating and sleeping habits, energy level, and mood are important signs of distress. Watch for regressed behaviors, such as clinging in children and intense emotional reactions, such as anxiety or a strong need for retribution in adults. When necessary, point individuals to licensed professional counselors who can provide needed support. • Avoid overexposure to media. While it is important to stay informed, media portrayals of shootings a n d mass deaths have been shown to cause acute stress and posttraumatic stress symptoms. Limit your exposure and take a break from news sources. • Maintain contact with friends and family. These individuals can provide you with emotional support to help deal with difficult times. • Focus on your strength base. Maintain practices that you have found to provide emotional relief. Remind yourself of people and events which are meaningful and comforting.

What are Republicans Going to do About Racism and the Wall?

O

n June 12, 1987 President Ronald Reagan stood before the Berlin Wall in Germany and said to the head of Russia: Mr. Gorbachev “Tear down this wall”. The Berlin Wall was built to keep Hardy L. Brown his people in. Now we Photo by benoitmalphettes.com have a presidential candidate in Donald Trump preaching how he is going to build a wall to keep Mexicans from coming into the United States, which, in essence, will also prevent us from going to Mexico. Reagan also told Gorbachev that if you seek peace and prosperity then this wall would not get you there. I have seen walls built in America to make sure Blacks did not come in contact with Whites in the form of rail road tracks, highways, interstate freeways and other barriers -- all man made. In San Bernardino, those barriers that physically separated the Westside’s Black and Latino population from the rest of town were recently torn down when the freeway was rebuilt to create safer on and off-ramps. Republicans love to claim President Abraham Lincoln; they say they are the party of Lincoln because he freed the enslaved. Lincoln warned the South in his inaugural address: “The government will not assail you.... You have no oath registered in Heaven to destroy the government, while I shall have the most solemn one to preserve, protect and defend it." Lincoln, whether he wanted to or not, was saying I took an oath to defend the civil rights and freedom of every citizen regardless of race, gender, religious belief, or who they chose to love.

What is frightening about presidential candidate Donald Trump is his lack of understanding of that ideal. Like many of you, I’m not too sure what he will do after he takes the oath of office if his campaign rhetoric is any indication. Its hard to believe he can “make America great (again)” when his rhetoric would return us to the days of Jim Crow laws and legal discrimination based on race, sexual orientation, and religion and his own business practices would return us to the days of slave labor. Now Donald Trump, as a politician-type, is not new. The Democrats had Governor George Wallace of Alabama running for president and the voters had to decide what to do. The voters

rejected his rhetoric of segregation yesterday, segregation today and segregation forever. Now we are faced with that same kind of rhetoric and the majority of Republicans have to decide on what they should do. I personally know many Republicans who do not share the beliefs of Mr. Trump and will quietly not support him just like many Democrats who will do the same against Secretary Hillary Clinton. You must elect a president and other officials who are inclusive in their policy making. Blacks, Latinos, Asians, Muslims, the LGBT community, and women regardless of race cannot afford the luxury of not choosing a side. hardybrown@blackvoicenews.com

Proposition 50—Suspended Without Pay Sacramento

O

n Tuesday June 7th California voters passed Proposition 50 with an unprecedented majority—77 percent of voters statewide approved the legislation. Proposition 50 enshrined a constitutional amendment that gives California lawmakers enhanced authority to act against legislative peers considered unfit for the job. State legislators pursued Proposition 50 in the wake of the 2014 suspensions of three state senators, Leland Yee, Ron Calderon and Rod Wright. At the time, all three lawmakers faced felony-related charges. Under existing law when a member is suspended, his/her peers are prohibited from making reductions in their pay. When legislators are under suspension they cannot vote on bills nor take any legislative action; however, they continue to draw their full salaries. Currently, most legislators are paid a salary of about $100,000 per year. Legislators also receive per diem, health, dental, and vision benefits. They do not however, receive state retirement benefits.

pol 2016 itic aln ews

With the approval of Proposition 50, legislators can now suspend members without salary and benefits. The measure also prohibits suspended members from using the powers of their office or legislative resources. It also gives legislators two options for ending suspensions. Suspension can be ended by a predetermined specific date or by a vote of either the house or Senate as appropriate; any such action require a two-thirds vote by the appropriate house. Those who supported the legislation like the organization California Forward, believed lawmakers should be able to hold their own colleagues accountable if they breach the public's trust. The legislation also enjoyed strong bi-partisan support. Although opposition to the measure was limited, there was criticism that the measure still allowed legislators to remain in office even after having been indicted and/or convicted; however, legislators do have a discipline option available that is more severe than the suspension option selected for the three senators in 2014. Legislators can choose to expel a fellow legislator putting an end to his or term in office—however, this has not happened since 1905.

Marijuana Measure Seeks Spot on November Ballot in City of San Bernardino San Bernardino

A

proposed, local marijuana ballot measure is positioned to qualify for the November ballot. The measure would allow up to five dispensaries within the boundaries of the City of San Bernardino. Supporters of the measure have secured the number of signatures required to qualify the measure and those signatures are now being validated by the county’s Registrar of Voters. Although this measure is exclusive to the City of San Bernardino, once the signatures are validated the measure will join a plethora of marijuana related initiatives vying to either advance or limit the access and/or use of marijuana in California that may appear on this year’s ballot. The number of statewide, marijuana related initiatives considered for this year’s ballot is staggering. By early May, eleven marijuana measures had already been cleared by the California Secretary of State for signature gathering. Some have since failed to gather the required signatures in the allotted time. In the meantime, another eight marijuana initiatives were pending approval for circulation. In regards to the eight pending initiatives, often a measure’s sponsor may file multiple versions of the same ballot initiative. They do this in an attempt to keep their particular initiative alive. This is in essence is how it works: If the circulation deadline comes and goes on one version of an initiative without enough signatures gathered for it to be filed; the initiative itself may still be alive, provided its sponsor(s) has a later

version of the measure waiting in the wings with a deadline farther into the future. California was the first state in the nation to consider legalizing marijuana in 1972 with Proposition 19. The initiative was roundly defeated when only 33.5 percent of the electorate approved of the measure while 66.5 percent of the state’s voters cast ballots against it. Much has changed in regards to public sentiment regarding the use of marijuana in the intervening years.

oster youth from local high schools were honored at the 2016 “Unstoppable Awards” held Saturday, June 11. The event also honored two judicial officers. Deborah Howell of 94.7 the WAVE served as this year’s Mistress of Ceremonies. The event, held at the Brookside County Club in Pasadena, celebrated the achievements of these students who beat considerable odds to graduate from high school while being in foster care. Each student received an “Unstoppable” scholarship in an amount between $500 and $3400 to cover tuition and other costs for college or trade school. The honorees included, Sabrina Magro, Devontee Chism Brown, her nephew Torieaun Hilbert, Catherine Gonzalez, Erriyanna Slaughter, and Eesja Slaughter. According to the California Department of Education, out of nearly 60,000 children in foster care statewide, only about 50 percent graduate from high school, out of which 10 percent attend college or technical school, and only 3 percent finish. The “Unstoppable Awards” are aimed at youth with average GPAs of 2.3 – 3.2. The

scholarship seeks to recognize their scholastic accomplishments in spite of the significant obstacles that impact many transition-age foster youth, chief among them—multiple home and school placements, and the resulting disruption in their lives. Dr. Anissa McNeil, an education consultant and a former foster youth created the “Unstoppable Awards” program and named it in honor of her mother. “After being homeless with my mother, I was raised by my grandmother, who is my inspiration to try to help make a difference in these kids’ lives,” she said. This year, the scholarship program provided scholarships to ten foster youth who overcame challenges and according to Dr. McNeil, “Have a can-do attitude about life and learning.” “In the years to come,” she added, “I’d like to build the momentum via increased community awareness, so we can honor the achievements of increasing numbers of graduating foster youth.” This year the organization also honored Jude D. Zeke Zeidler with the Foster Youth Service Award and Retired Referee Sherri Sobel with the Trailblazer Award for leading the effort to develop education services for foster youth in Edelman’s Children’s Court.

Perris High School Graduate to Attend Duke University Perris

L

ela Owens, graduate of Citrus Hills High School in Perris and recipient of the coveted Southern California Ronald McDonald House Charities Future Achievers Scholarship Award will attend Duke University in the fall. Owens, the eldest of three siblings, has set a wonderful example for her two younger brothers while at the same time, furthering a tradition as the third generation in her family to attend college. According to Owens, she selected Duke University because of its excellent STEM program in addition to the academic freedom it offers students to also explore courses outside one’s major. Owens plans to major in Computer Science with hopes of one day landing a position in a high tech company like Google. She also has another goal in mind—to bring her knowledge, skills and abilities back to her community, particularly Citrus High School, to serve as a mentor. She wants to encourage and assist students interested in pursuing STEM related courses. Although Owens is passionate about exploring the field of Computer Science, interestingly, it was not until she became a high school senior that she took her first computer science course. According to Owens, it really ignited her thinking. “In Computer Science everything is based on logic,” she explained. “As a Computer Scientist you have to consider all of the steps [in a process]—it forces you to slow down your thinking and think logically through every step.” According to Owens, Computer Science has helped her in other areas as well. Whether it involved seeking a solution to problem in the classroom or in life, “I now consider all things before just doing it. I sort of connect everything back to Computer Science.” How would she encourage younger students to consider taking a Computer Science class? Not surprisingly, she already has. “I was Cheerleading Captain at my school,” she shared. “A lot of the girls on my team would see me in class studying for an Advanced Placement (AP) course or Computer Science exam or another class and they would ask me how hard it was. I always encouraged them by saying, ‘It is not as hard as you think.’” Owens would like to see her school consider some type of mentorship program to encourage

more students to participate in STEM related courses and involve upper classmen or those who are already in college to act as mentors. “I would like to come back and tell younger students how classes like AP and Computer Science have helped me along the way.” Owens’ idea could be a welcomed way to address an issue that continues to be of concern to educators and others—African Americans in particular and girls in general continue to be under represented in STEM related courses, particularly physics. This is one reason scholarships like the Ronald McDonald House Charities Awards (RMHCA) for Future Achievers are such a welcomed benefit to the educational goal attainments of students like Owens—high achieving African American students who plan to attend a four-year university with a focus on STEM. Such awards also serve as an incentive for younger students to pursue STEM courses so they too can compete for such awards. In addition to Owens, this year RMHCA awarded Future Achievers Scholarships to six additional students in the Inland Empire. Included among them: Josiah Bailey, Matthew Gayed, Alexis Oyawale, Daisha Smith, Jia Talley and Donovan A. Williams. Congratulations to this year’s winners.

ebruary 2016 was the warmest on record according to the nonprofit Climate Change Guide (CHG). According to NASA records in February 2016 for the first time ever, the global average temperature passed 1.5C. The previous record high was set a month earlier in January 2016 with a global average temperature of 1.14C. January’s record broke the previous high set in December 2015 which was 1.10C. Some climate experts believe the world has entered a new phase of accelerated warming. According to CHC, average temperatures across the Northern Hemisphere have never exceeded 2.0C—broadly considered the threshold above which climate change may become dangerous to humanity.

study released earlier this month by the Center for Civil Rights Remedies and the University of California Los Angeles concluded that dropping the nation’s suspension rate for tenth graders by a minimal amount could result in a multi-billion-dollar boost to the nation’s overall economy. According to the report, lowering the current 16 percent in-school and out-of-school suspension rate by just one percentage point would potentially lead to a fiscal benefit of $691 million dollars. Such saving would be the result of improvements in earnings and taxes for affected students and could ultimately lead to a social benefit of $2.2 billion as a result of savings in areas like welfare, criminal justice and health care

Riverside County Supervisor Chuck Washington Shares His Insights

S. E. Williams Contributor veryone has a story to tell about how they earned their mettle, who they looked to as role models, who provided their inspiration and how they in turn, worked to pass those lessons on not only to their own progeny but to all within their sphere of influence who seek inspiration, motivation and at times, guidance. When Governor Jerry Brown appointed Temecula City Councilman Chuck Washington to fill an open position on the Riverside County Board of Supervisors in 2015, and Washington accepted, he stepped into the history books— becoming the first African American to serve in this capacity in Riverside County. Washington’s appointment was far from gratuitous. He had served in the public sector for many years, including as Mayor and City Councilmember for the cities of both Murrieta and Temecula. His history of public service also extends to the California Association of Councils of Governments, Western Riverside Council of Governments, Riverside County Airport Land Use Commission, Temecula Chamber of Commerce, Boys and Girls Club, Habitat for Humanity of Inland Valleys, Temecula Economic Development Corporation, the Inland Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and others. Washington’s history of public service, however, did

not begin there. He also served his country as a Navy Officer and Naval Aviator, spent twenty-four years as a commercial airline pilot and is also a former bank vicepresident. This year, Washington led a field of candidates in the June 7th Primary with 40 percent of the vote in an effort to secure his supervisorial seat for another term. He will face-off against challenger Shellie Milne in November. As Washington prepares for the election, he took time to share his reflections on the important role American fathers play in the lives of their children. He brings a universal perspective as a father and a unique perspective as the first and only African American in an elevated position of local leadership in the Inland Empire. When appointed Supervisor, he espoused a vision for the county as a safe place to raise families. As a husband, father and grandfather this remains among his top priorities. When asked about his own father’s influence in his life, Washington shared he had just recently reflected on this question in preparation to deliver a commencement address. “I was reflecting on how much the world has changed in my lifetime,” he began. “My parents grew up in Mississippi in the 30’s and 40’s. My dad was accepted to Howard University Medical School—the only place a Black

My dad passed away seventeen years ago,” he shared. “I don’t know if I appreciated then, all he went through and what he tried to teach us. At this point in my life, being an African American, those things are more poignant for me than it might be for someone who is not African American . . . I never had a greater appreciation for my dad and what he did for me—he created a path forward. man could go at that time. My father was taught to value education and my parents assured that my older brother and I went to college in Jackson, Mississippi. Now,” he continued, “kids have so many things to think about in regards to their lives.” Washington went on to paint a picture of how change is occurring at such a rapid pace. “A hundred years before I was born, slavery was the law of the land. Fifty years before I was born, women did not have a right to vote. Certainly, more has changed in the last 25 to 50 years than in the previous 500 years.” He continued, “When you are in the midst of change you do not think about it so much. Now, I’m where I am in my life, I think about the sacrifices so many made that gave me my opportunities. My dad passed away 17 years ago. I don’t know if I appreciated then, all he went through and what he tried to teach us.” “At this point in my life, being an African American, those things are more poignant for me than it might be for someone who is not African American. I went on to be an officer in the navy and an airline pilot—even the Tuskegee airmen were not allowed to come back and consider being an airline pilot as a career choice—but, they blazed that trail for all of us. I never had a greater appreciation for my dad and what he did for me—he created a path forward,” Washington affirmed. When asked about being a father in his own right he did not hesitate. “One of the greatest joys of my life has turned out to be my marriage to my wife Kathy for 42 years, my daughter Lindsey, and the life we have enjoyed together-first, the two of us and then the three of us.” He described it as a small little family unit of love. “I’m sure a lot of people say the same thing, being a parent teaches you about unconditional love. We grew together and experienced things

together.” Washington reflected on the memory of teaching his daughter to ride a bike without training wheels when she was only 4 years old and contrasted it to her asking him to take her sky-diving when she was 20. “Now, my daughter is a mother herself and we have two grandchildren. I’m having that joy and love all over again.” The titles of husband, father and grandfather mean more than any official title, Washington explained. He also stressed how honored he feels that people want him to represent them. “I try to do it with a servant’s heart, to remain humble and be sincere.” Less than 50 percent of Riverside’s Third District is comprised of people of color. Washington is sensitive to their needs just as he is attuned to the needs of all of his constituents. “I represent everyone and I think, two positive things occur. First, people who are not minorities have a different image of an African American man—when they see me in office it helps break down stereotypes.” Secondly, it provides an opportunity for him to be an a visible role model for his constituents of color. “About a year ago, a young African American male about 16 years-old, wanted to come in and say hello to me. I just hugged him and told him not to put limits on himself. There will be other people who will do that--ignore them, I said.” Washington supports programs that help improve the quality of life for all of his constituents and at times, these programs can be of particular benefit to minorities. For example, as a member of the First 5 Commission, the group recently considered a grant application to provide swim lessons. “A group came in and demonstrated that minorities have a higher risk of drowning because there are limited opportunities for them to learn how to swim due

- Chuck Washington

to socio-economic conditions and lack of access to swimming pools.” Washington and the other members of the Commission supported the initiative. As a result, this year parents and children can receive free swim and safety instruction at YMCA’s across the county—an effort to prevent accidental youth drowning. “My daughter put my granddaughter in swimming lessons when she was three years old,” Washington shared. “I became convinced of how important this is.” For more information on this program visit ymcarc.org/swim/. Washington has advocated on behalf of similar programs in the past. “Whenever there is an opportunity to do those kinds of things, to weigh in and lobby for efforts to save minority lives, I do.” “My supporters have heard me say many times over, we are all the same whether we are from a small town in the Middle East, a West African village or a community somewhere in Indiana. People get up in morning, put breakfast on the table for their children and head off to work. We all want the same things—to provide for our families and live in a safe community.” On the issues of fatherhood, families and marriage Washington is one politician who leads by example. “I go out of my way to talk up marriage,” he explained and shared a belief that his generation needs to promote marriage to the millennials. “We should tell them about the joys of marriage. We need more uplifting messages about marriage and family because in the long run, the families we create and the children we procreate are our contributions to the human race—I pass something of value on to my daughter and she passes it on to her children and so on. When we bring children into the world, we sustain the human race and pass on the values and traits we need.”

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. NOTICE OF TRUSTEE’S SALE Note: Because the Beneficiary reserves the right to bid less than the total debt owed, it is possible that at the time of the sale the opening bid may be less than the total debt NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the

mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (866)-9608299 or visit this Internet Web site http:// www.altisource.com/MortgageServices/ DefaultManagement/TrusteeServices. aspx using the file number assigned to this case 2015-04759-CA. specialfeature The Orlando Massacre—

Palm Springs Community Gathers in Remembrance and Solidarity S. E. Williams Contributor hocked, saddened and many still reeling from the early morning news, members of Palm Springs’ large LGBT community came together Sunday evening to mourn those who were lost and pray for those injured and the families of all who were impacted by the massacre in Orlando, Florida. They did so as they also grappled with the reality of the and massive nature of the newest hate-crime perpetrated against their community and their nation. Members of the LGBT community quickly discovered however, they would not have to stand alone as thousands of Palm Springs residents and weekend visitors young and old, representing all races and all religions joined with them to also acknowledge the lives of those taken and to stand in solidarity with their LGBT neighbors and in defiance of yet another wanton act of terror. The massacre in the Orlando nightclub was not only the latest in a growing list of massacres to terrorize America in recent years—it was the deadliest mass shooting in American History. When the stuttered blast of bullets subsided and the smoke cleared, first responders realized an almost unbearable reality 50 dead and 53 injured, many grievously—a number of the injured remain in critical condition. Although many of the details of the attack remained sketchy on Sunday evening, the depth of the pain and sorrow was clear and it reverberated across the nation and around the world. Imam Reymundo Nour of the Islamic Center of Palm Springs perhaps summed it up best when he addressed the sad and yet defiant crowd. "Here we go once more," he lamented. "Some individual allowed themselves to be misguided to commit such a crime." Palm Springs Mayor Robert Moon had just returned from Washington D.C. where he attended an LGBT reception at the White House in honor of Pride Month. He reminded

U.S. Congressional Representative Raul Ruiz addresses crowd during Sunday’s vigil in Palm Springs for the victims of the Orlando Massacre

“Any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.” - John Donne those in attendance of all the progress the LGBT community had achieved in recent years and spoke words of comfort, encouragement and reminded those in the LGBT community of its resilience. Congressman Raul Ruiz who represents California’s 36th Congressional District which includes the City of Palm Springs condemned the attack and reaffirmed his unwavering support of the LGBT community s well as his commitment

to do all he can in the continued fight against terror. Ruiz was also challenged by shouts from those in attendance to push for meaningful gun control legislation. When Ruiz responded with strong and affirmative commitment to follow through on the request, the crowd roared its approval. In a press statement released earlier on Sunday Ruiz stated, "A terrorist attack against any community in the U.S is an attack against all Americans. This mass shooting is absolutely deplorable and I condemn it in the strongest terms. My heart goes out to the victims and their families,” he wrote. “Together we mourn and send our prayers to the victims and their families. Together we thank the first responders in the front lines. Together we stand strong against hate crimes of any form, and together we will defeat terrorism and eliminate ISIS." The site of the Orlando terror event, a nightclub named the ‘Pulse’, has the spirit of life encoded in its name. Co-owner Barbara Poma named the club ‘Pulse’ in honor of her brother, John, who died of Aids in 1991. Poma told a Washington Post reporter that to her, “John was not gay, not just a politically-charged label.” Instead, she told the reporter, John was her loving brother who taught her many things including how to love unconditionally. In was in this spirit, the spirit of unconditional love as experienced between Poma and her brother John, that the vigil was brought to a graceful and peaceful close. The thousands in attendance held hands, each with the ones who stood beside them on either side; and in a moment of silent prayer for the ones lost and injured as well as their families and other loved ones, took a moment to find comfort in the pulse very of those with whom they held hands and in turn, the pulse of the thousands who stood in that moment connected to each other. They stood together in defiance of terror and immersed in the kind of solidarity that nurtures hope.
