f there is something the Inland Empire needs more of, it’s critical thinkers. We have some big problems in this region – from environmental issues like poor air quality and a lack of water to not enough diverse jobs or opportunities for entrepreneurship. We have a low college-going rate, a growing homeless population, and a plethora of health disparities. Having a group of critical thinkers to research and creative minds to understand the complexities of these issues enough to offer viable solutions is imperative. So, I understand the impulse to be innovative in creating critical thinking lesson plans for our Inland students. What I don’t understand is the thinking of the teachers and administrators of the Rialto Unified School District in asking students to write an essay on whether or not the Holocaust happened. Seriously? There are so many… so very many…other topics that could engage students in critical thinking. The assignment, developed by the district’s English and Language Arts teachers and linked to the students’ reading of “The Diary of Anne Frank,” required 2,000 8th grade students to read and evaluate sources from About.com, History.com, and BibleBelievers.org.au (a Holocaust denial site) and based on the evidence write an essay on whether or not the Holocaust occurred. As a professor of expository writing I find so many problems with the plan for this assignment, from the question being asked to the type of sources the students were asked to evaluate. There are themes and issues related to the history of the Holocaust that could be meaningful, impactful, and yes stimulate critical thinking in our middle school students. For example, genocides are still happening throughout the world, what are the warning signs we should look for to help prevent future genocides? What is our responsibility as a nation when confronted with those types of crimes? Or another example: when European Jews fled Nazi persecution there was a time when US immigration policies made it difficult for those refugees to enter the country, in part because Americans were afraid the newcomers would take away their jobs. Perhaps that aspect of US and Holocaust history could be explored in the context of current US immigration issues with Central American refugees. Just a thought. Later this week I will be embarking on our annual Underground Railroad Study Tour and during the tour I will have an opportunity to visit the Freedom Center in Cincinnati. While the Freedom Center was created specifically to tell the story of the freedom movement known as the Underground Railroad, it is a facility that documents and interprets the significance of freedom movements around the world. Critical thinking exercises are important for our young people. And equally important is the need for the educators designing the exercises to use good critical thinking skills in their creation. Just like slavery, the Holocaust happened, we must guide our young minds in exploring ways to make sure they create a world where those types of human atrocities never happen again. The Sun Newspaper recently published an article on the Holocaust assignment and reported that dozens of the students believed that, based on their interpretation and evaluation of the “sources,” the Holocaust didn’t happen. Clearly this assignment was a big fail. And unfortunately did more damage to the students than it benefited them. Paulette Brown-Hinds, PhD Photo by benoitmalphettes.com

O

n June 27, 2014, more than 300 Inland Regional Center (IRC) consumers and families gathered for a night of glitz, glamour and community fun at the center’s 9th Annual Monte Carlo Night fundraiser. The casinothemed event raised nearly $1,000 in funds to support social outings, trainings and events for IRC’s Consumer Advisory Committee (CAC), a consumer-run advocacy group for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities such as autism, Down syndrome, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, and intellectual disabilities.

IRC’s CAC gives consumers age 16 and older monthly opportunities to “mix, mingle, be heard, and belong.” Funds raised at events like Monte Carlo Night support activities such as health and wellness trainings, “Coffee Talk” at Starbucks and participation at community events such as the Inland Empire 66ers Disability Awareness Night at San Manuel Stadium. The CAC was integral to the success of this year’s event. “Monte Carlo Night is a fun event that our advocacy group looks forward to year after year! We are grateful for the efforts of everyone

involved to make it happen and can’t thank everyone enough for the funds raised to help the CAC,” said CAC President Ryan Nelson. Partner sponsorships were donated from Inland Empire Health Plan (IEHP), People’s Care, Molina Healthcare, In-Roads Creative Programs, and multiple IRC board members made monetary and/or prize donations for the event. Volunteers from IRC, the CAC, In-Roads Creative Programs and the Foothill Foxy Flyers Roller Derby Team transformed the IRC conference room into a real casino - complete with Rat-Pack music, centerpieces made from playing cards, slot machines, decked out dealers and faux neon signs over each gaming area. Attendees played Vegas-style games including Black Jack, Bingo, Roulette and the Wheel of Fun. They competed to win tickets for prizes such as glow-in-the-dark necklaces and a few lucky winners went home with raffles prizes such as amusement park tickets, movie passes, and more. Attendees enjoyed a themed photo booth where they could don silly props and put on their poker face for the camera. The keepsake photos served as a memorable memento for all of IRC’s guests. 1-Khalil Robinson spins the “Wheel of Fun” for a chance to win big. 2-It’s all smiles at the Roulette Table for Diedre Shields and Jose Cordera. 3-Tamika Green, Reba Jordan, Tracy Wagner, and Valerie Gutierrez pose with their winnings from Monte Carlo Night at IRC.

K

eeping Cal State San Bernardino a safe place for students, faculty and staff is the priority of its new CARE Team and its chair, Rob Morgan. The acronym CARE stands for Campus Assessment, Response and Education Team, which provides early intervention assistance for at-risk individuals, as well as education for the campus. “Since the Virginia Tech shooting of 2007, campuses around the U.S. have developed behavioral intervention teams,” said Morgan, who serves as the team’s chair and is the university’s director of Threat Assessment. “CSUSB, like many other schools, adopted a multidimensional approach mirroring a national standard developed by the National Behavioral Intervention Team Association soon after that tragic event.” Though it is centralized, the CARE Team also is multidisciplinary in its approach, involving trained members from various departments and offices on campus, including but not limited to, the University Police Department, the Office of Student Affairs,

the university’s Auxiliary/Business Services and Risk Management office, and the university’s Title IX coordinator/ombuds. “This model puts CSUSB on the cutting edge not only in providing in-depth reactive capabilities but also in violence prevention on college campuses using a public health model,” Morgan said. The team’s new role has included the development of its CARE Team website at http:// www.csusb.edu/careteam, and anonymous online reporting of disruptive or dangerous behavior on campus. Morgan, who came to CSUSB in the spring, is trained as a clinical psychologist who earned his doctorate from Pepperdine University. He completed his master’s degree in forensic psychology at the University of Denver and his bachelor of science in cellular neuroscience at Tulane University. Upland District Adds Assistant Superintendent For Elementary Education

Upland

T

he Upland Unified School District Has hired a new assistant superintendent to oversee the district’s elementary schools following the recent addition of a new assistant superintendent for secondary education. Upland resident Ellen Lugo, a longtime educator and administrator most recently with the OntarioMontclair School District, has been named the Upland Unified School District’s Assistant superintendent for elementary education. She began her new position earlier this month. “Our goal has been to dedicate administrators to oversee both the elementary and secondary schools, so that we are better able to give schools and students throughout the district the attention they deserve,” said UUSD Superintendent Dr. Nancy Kelly. “Previously the district had just one assistant superintendent in our educational services division.

This is a critical addition as we navigate through the early stages of the new Common Core State Standards, and Ellen has been at the forefront in helping the OntarioMontclair School District Design and implement the new standards. We are very fortunate to welcome Ellen Lugo to the Upland Unified School District.” “I am thrilled to join the Upland Unified team and look forward to exciting work ahead with the staff, students and families in our district,” said Lugo. “It is an honor to be working in the community I have lived in for 20 years and to be a team member in the district my own children attended.”

James Stastny named Apple Valley Employee of the Quarter Apple Valley

P

eople who work nine to 11 hours a day often think of the office as their second home. Naturally, they want that home to be a comfortable, clean space filled with friendly faces. Fortunately, for the Town of Apple Valley, employees like Custodian James Stastny provide exactly that. “Jim is a respected and valuable member of the Town’s team and he can be counted on to ensure that our jobs are easier,” said Parks and Recreation Manager Ralph Wright, who oversees the Facilities Division. “He consistently performs his responsibilities at an extremely high level with very little supervision.” James was honored for his hard work and dedication at this week’s Town Council meeting where he was named Employee of the Quarter. Stastny’s responsibilities include all cleaning duties in his assigned building, minor maintenance, room set-ups for meetings and classes, and completing special requests from staff. What is more impressive is his perfect attendance record. In his six years of employment, he has never taken a sick day. “Jim is an exceptional guy and a great town employee,” said Brett Morgan, Senior Construction Inspector. “I asked him one time if he would mind wiping down my desk if he had the time. He not only cleaned up my desk, but moved all of my paperwork, cleaned the entire surface, and then put everything back exactly like it was before. While I never saw him do this, he made it part of his regular routine.” Stastny considers providing his peers a clean work environment his part of a group effort to serve the community. “I get a lot of personal satisfaction from this job because I can instantly see the result of what I do,” said Stastny. “The people I work with are really good to me and knowing that I was nominated to be recognized for this honor by my peers is really exciting.” The Town of Apple Valley recognizes one employee per quarter for outstanding job performance. Nominations are submitted by peers or management and honorees are selected by a committee.

challenge like this,” said Petty Officer 1st Class William Currie, the lead petty officer for NRS Riverside. “The Navy and the Marines work closely with each other [in the fleet], and this challenge is a great way for these kids to get to know each other and learn about what the Marines do.” The event challenges included pull-ups, individual and squad push-ups, relay races, a flutter-kick endurance test, and concluded with drill movements. All attendees took part in at least one exercise. Some were part of a team while others went one-on-one with a member

of the opposing service. Participants for each event were selected at random. “We didn’t want to create teams that favored one set of skills or strengths,” said Staff Sgt. Edgar Razo, the staff noncommissioned officer in charge of RSS Riverside. “By picking people at random we encouraged competition throughout the entire group instead of just our strongest people.” Upon first arriving to the event it was very clear who belonged to which branch of service. There was almost an invisible line separating the two groups. Marine Corps poolees were only speaking to Marine Corps poolees and future sailors were continued on page 21

Protect Your Eyes With Good Sunglasses

I

n sunny Southern California sunglasses are a must. Sunglasses can give you instant cool, glamour, or rock star hipness. But they are much more than a fashion accessory. Sunglasses are an essential tool in safeguarding the health of your eyes and the surrounding tissue in two important ways: They help filter light and they protect against the damaging rays of the sun. According to Prevent Blindness America, sunglasses that reduce glare and filter 99-100% of ultraviolet (UV) rays are essential. They should be comfortable and protect your eyes without any distortion. Many people don’t realize the importance of protecting their eyes from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. Although you can’t see it, you should always protect your eyes from overexposure to UV radiation. Even on a cloudy day, UV light from the sun can cause sunburn on the cornea of your eyes. It can also cause blurred

vision, redness, and irritation. Over time, exposure to UV rays can lead to cataracts, macular degeneration, and in some cases even blindness. That’s why it’s so important to wear lenses with maximum UV protection every time you go outside. Before heading outdoors: • Make sure your eyewear provides 100% UV protection from both UVA and UVB rays. You can get lenses with UV coating, and polycarbonate lenses have built-in UV coverage. Certain contact lenses also provide UV protection. Frames with a close-fitting wraparound style provide the best protection because they limit how much stray sunlight reaches your eyes from above and beyond the periphery of your sunglass lenses. • Consider photochromic or polarized lenses. Photochromic lenses, like Transitions® lenses, change from clear to dark automatically when exposed to UV rays. Polarized lenses reduce or eliminate glare and reflections from the sun. You

can have coatings added to both lenses to block 100% of UV rays as needed. Go online to check the UV index in your area. Visit the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s SunWise Program for the latest UV index information.

According to Fite, the Center for Spatial Studies will benefit from its close relationship with Esri; the legacy of the Redlands Institute as an innovator in spatial decision support systems; the leadership of the University’s acclaimed MS GIS program; and the foundation laid by the LENS Initiative. “Spatial thinking is a key habit of mind for the 21st century,” Fite added. Director of Spatial Studies, Dr. Steven Moore, will lead the center and explained that staff and resources will support faculty and student efforts to measure, interpret and think critically about spatial patterns in data “from nanoscales to the cosmos.”

“The mission of the Center for Spatial Studies will be to help faculty and students think and act spatially, using geographic information systems (GIS), the Global Positioning System (GPS), remote sensing, photogrammetry, scientific image analysis, concept mapping, emerging cloud tools for integrating narratives into visual representations, and even art, movement, and dance,” Moore said. “Students and faculty will work side-byside using the technology to help visualize the consequences of alternative futures and collaborate to make better choices for our planet and ourselves,” Moore added.

broad framework of the liberal arts. The Center for Business GIS and Spatial Analysis in the School of Business has built a niche in business GIS instruction and scholarship that supports internationalization and community outreach. “By increasing its support for integrating spatial studies into the campus community, the University of Redlands will reinforce its reputation as an innovator in higher education. Few institutions of higher education have attempted such a broad integration of spatial reasoning and professional practice into their teaching, scholarship, and research,” said David Fite, interim provost and chief academic officer.

inmyopinion How Many Brothers Or Cousins Work In The Fire Department?

I

n an article written by Ryan Hagen of the Sun newspaper on July 7th, he answered one of the questions I and others have regarding statements and comments made by many community members that the San Hardy L. Brown Bernardino City Fire Department only hires brothers, cousins, people they know, or who have been referred by someone within the department. To fully answer the question or see if the problem is as deep as some of us think, it would take a full review of the employment process beginning with bona fide job related qualifications, recruitment, how did they find about openings, who referred them, the employment interview, what type of written test is required, and if anyone had input with the candidates before the final selection was made. I know from my experience as Recruitment Manager at Kaiser Permanente, County Civil Service Commissioner and Classified Personnel Commission with the San Bernardino

School District you have to stay on your “P’s” and “Q’s” to prevent nepotism from corrupting the system. The Sun article identified two brothers working at Fire Station #230 that is on the planned budget cuts from city. Ryan named firefighters Andrew Stebel, 37 and younger brother Hans Stebel, 32. I do not know how many brothers, cousins or special friends work in the department but think it needs to be investigated. It is bad that the city has to cut anyone but the money is not there to keep the

station open and other departments from losing employees. I know what it feels like to be laid off from my days working at Kaiser Steel during the good old days of big contracts and then nothing for several months, it is no fun especially when you have a family. Ryan went on to point out that the top 40 firefighters in the city make $197,000 a year. The next 40 firefighters make $166,000 a year and the next 40 make $130,000 a year, which includes benefits. I have already reported that only four firefighters on the department staff live in the city. And out of a staff of 120, two are Asian, six African American, nineteen Hispanic and one female. This is not a good representation of the city’s ethnic demographic by a long shot. So when the people hear and read that brothers can be hired, and local citizens cannot, it leaves a bitter taste in their mouth. Now while nothing can be done at this time the mayor, city council, and the civil service board should prepare for the future when the economy picks up and the city starts hiring again. The city staff must reflect the diversity of the city it serves and that includes the fire department.

What Are Our Kids Are Being Taught?

I

t is often said if you do not know your history you are doomed to repeat it. In the Rialto Unified School District, students were assigned an essay to promote critical thinking asking them if, based on the evidence, the Holocaust actually happened. I asked myself what are they teaching the students and what curricula are the teachers using? Are they using the Internet as their source or just allowing students to express themselves without any credible sources. Whatever is going on, the Board of Education must get to the bottom of this embarrassing situation. Next they will be saying that Blacks were not

an enslaved people in America or those who were enslaved were happy. Many of our young

people do not remember that after slavery we had over one hundred years of Jim Crow Laws in America of which I lived under in North Carolina. Currently we have the Tea Party of the National Republican Party and the United States Supreme Court doing everything in their power to return us to that time in US History. We have some historians rewriting our history books to soften the impact slavery had on us. We were stripped of language, food, name, culture everything we knew and now they want to alter that which we know to be true. Like I said if we do not know our history we are doomed to repeat it. We cannot allow that to happen.

pointofview Renewables Can Put the Brakes on High Gas Prices

A

s Americans hop in their cars this summer, gasoline prices are at a sixyear high. Thanks to surging demand and continued turmoil in Iraq, gas is quickly approaching $4.00 per gallon. With prices rising so fast, there’s never been a more important time for America to invest in alternative sources of energy. The longer we’re dependent on oil, the longer we’re at the mercy of foreign political turmoil. One of the most promising alternative energy sources is ethanol, a renewable fuel derived from common agricultural goods like corn, woodchips, and grasses. Ramping up America’s ethanol production would drive down demand for oil and wean this country off the volatility and sudden price swings that come along with it. And yet, despite the profound promise of ethanol, some politicians are pushing to stamp it out. They’re lobbying to repeal the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), which requires the use of ethanol in the national fuel supply to promote greater energy independence and a cleaner environment. This doesn’t make any sense. The modern energy market was borne out of the substantial industrial shifts stimulated by World War I. The resulting industrial ramp up generated planes, submarines and tanks that all relied on the internal combustion engine. Even after the conflict ceased, the widespread

VOICEINBOX

commercial thirst for oil remained strong. It’s grown steadily since. And America has leaned heavily on oil-rich Persian Gulf nations to feed its demand. Oil is what’s known as a “global commodity,” meaning it costs the same price regardless of where it is produced. Hence the sad irony, that while the U.S. is domestically producing more oil than at any time in the past 28 years, oil prices have continued to rise. However, because so much oil comes from the Middle East, it has an outsized influence on global gas prices. Producers in that region have banded together to form a cartel, allowing them to artificially restrict supply and drive up world prices at will. What’s more, many of the top oil-producing countries in the Gulf are exceptionally unstable and conflict-prone. That turmoil also disrupts supply, leading to price increases the ripple throughout the globe. The price of ethanol, on the other hand, isn’t set by a monopolistic cartel on the world stage. Ethanol producers are based right here in the States. They’re reliable in a way foreign producers have never been. That’s why ethanol offers the best hope for America to finally break this dangerous dependence. It’s estimated that since 2000, U.S. foreign oil imports have dropped by 35 percent because of

increased ethanol use. In 2013, ethanol production displaced the amount of oil America imports from Iraq and Venezuela -- 462 million barrels of crude oil. According to a study from Iowa State University, increased Bob Dinneen ethanol use saved the President/CEO average American family Renewable Fuels $1,200 at the pump in Association 2011. Likewise, energy economist Philip Verleger recently concluded that the RFS has saved consumers about a $1.00 per gallon on average for gasoline. Ethanol production is also a huge job creator. A typical U.S. ethanol plant produces 1 million gallons annually and supports nearly 3,000 jobs. All in, the RFS supports over 400,000 jobs in sectors ranging from farming and manufacturing. Special interests have regularly encouraged members of Congress to jettison the Renewable Fuel Standard. Congress has wisely resisted. Now is the time to intensify our commitment to domestic renewables so more Americans can hit the road.

T

he Inland Empire captured the national spotlight last week when CareerBuilder, a recruitment and labor information resource, cited “Riverside” as one of the Top 10 cities for job growth in the nation. The report, compiled by Economic Modeling Specialists Intl. (EMSI), included labor market data for the Riverside metro area and San Bernardino County. “Riverside” was 10th on the CareerBuilder’s list for adding 76,646 jobs from 2010 to 2013, buoyed by strong warehouse and storage industries, as well as medical offices and civil engineering construction. The number of jobs previously expected to be added for that same period based on national job growth was 42,412 jobs – an 80.7 percent jump. The percentage of total employment due to the competitive effect of the Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) was 2.4 percent. “Riverside” had a total employment of 1,432,813 jobs in 2013. In the report, the Inland Empire joined the ranks of major metropolitan cities such as Houston, Dallas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, and Detroit. Trailing behind “Riverside” in 11th place was Denver, Colo., with 91,246 jobs added with a total employment of 1,408,825 jobs in 2013. Jennifer Sullivan Grasz, a spokeswoman for CareerBuilder, said it is distinguishing for a city to be on the list because “It provides perspective

on the health of the local economy and job market. Those in the top ten have the biggest competitive advantage in terms of gaining share of U.S. jobs.” “The study is specific to the local economy. In addition to warehousing, construction and manufacturing, the local economy has also benefitted from a greater investment in technology,” she said. In a press release, Matt Ferguson, Chief Executive Officer of CareerBuilder said, “The metros producing the strongest competitive effect are often heavily dominated by specialized technical industries with well-established local supply chains.” “The overall job growth in these markets is not primarily a product of national economic trends, but rather distinct factors in the local economy such as energy resources in Houston, technology hubs in Silicon Valley and Austin, or the motion picture industry in Los Angeles. Thirtytwo of the top 50 metros have outperformed national employment growth post-recession which, in turn, can have a positive influence on other geographies.” Exceeding Expectations According to Larry Vaupel, Economic Development Manager for Riverside, job growth has steadily improved each month and stimulated the local economy, contributing to

greater sales tax gains and a healthy general fund. “We currently have more ‘Riversiders’ employed than before the recession,” said Vaupel. As jobs were added to the area, Riverside experienced growth with hotels, retail stores, restaurants, and auto dealerships. The strong jobs growth has generated “double digit” increases in sales tax revenue for Riverside, largely stemming from retail sales. Sales taxes revenues on auto purchases have also increased about 15 to 17 percent, said Vaupel. The city’s general fund has also increased “significantly” compared to the previous fiscal year, he said. “It’s a ripple effect of people having disposable income. ... It bodes well for the economy,” said Vaupel. Though the national upward trend with employment data has been touted, the wages associated with new job growth have been criticized for being low-end compared to the wages of pre-recession jobs on record. According to Vaupel, the Office of Economic Development cannot track average and median wages monthto-month such as with labor market data, but the information will be evaluated when reports become available, likely from U.S. Census data. “It is something we are concerned with. You don’t just want low wage jobs, but living

wage jobs. This is something we are watching carefully.” Almost There? While logistics jobs continue to grow and the construction industry jobs that the Inland Empire were once known for continue to trickle in, retail and restaurant employment account for most of the region’s employment. As much of the Inland Empire’s employment resurgence is a boon for city officials – and since most jobs are filled by local workforce – little of the recent growth can be attributed to efforts made by local officials. According to John Husing, the recent job growth is “fundamentally the result of the region’s natural advantages coming back into play.” “The largest employment in the Inland Empire is in lower paying sectors like restaurants and retailing. Of the good paying sectors, the strongest are Logistics (Warehouses and Distribution) and construction. While growth in construction jobs is beginning to increase, it is accounting for a smaller portion of job growth than normal in the past few years,” said Husing. “The way to think about it is we had a very deep hole. We lost 143,000 jobs during the recession. We are climbing out of the hole. ... The fact that the numbers we see are strong is a good thing. By the end of the year, we should be about 85 percent out of the hole,” he said.

classifieds&publicnotices If you bought Namaste’s “Organic Root Stimulator” or “Organic Root Salon” products you could be entitled to money from a legal settlement. A Settlement has been proposed in a class action lawsuit with Namaste Laboratories, LLC (“Namaste” or “Defendant”) involving Namaste’s Organic Root Stimulator® and Organic Root Salon® hair care products. What Is the Lawsuit About? The lawsuit claims that Namaste improperly labels each product as “Organic” in order to enable it to unfairly capture sales that it would not make but for its deception, and also to charges consumers a premium based upon the false perception that the products are organic. Namaste denies any wrongdoing or illegal conduct but has agreed to settle the case to avoid the expense and distraction of litigation. The Settlement does not mean that Namaste did anything wrong and the Court has not decided that Namaste did anything wrong. Am I a Member of the Class? You are a member of the Settlement Class if you purchased for personal use, and not for re-sale, one or more bottles of Organic Root Stimulator or Organic Root Salon in California from April 12, 2008 until June 27, 2014. What Does the Settlement Provide? The Parties have agreed to create a settlement fund of $650,000 (the “Common Fund”), to be paid by Namaste for the benefit of Class Members who purchased Organic Root Stimulator® and Organic Root Salon® for personal use from April 12, 2008 through June 27, 2014. Additionally, Namaste has agreed phase out its Organic Root Stimulator® and Organic Root Salon® trademarks on products manufactured for sale in California. The Parties have further agreed that, subject to Court approval, the costs to administer this Settlement, reasonable attorneys’ fees and costs to Class Counsel related to obtaining the settlement fund, and an incentive award to the named Plaintiff will be paid from the Common Fund. How Much Money Can I Get Back? Settlement Class Members who make a Valid Claim will be entitled to reimbursement of $10.00 per bottle of Organic Root Stimulator® and Organic Root Salon® purchased up to two valid claims per Class Member. To make a claim, Class Members must provide purchase receipts documenting proof of purchase, or provide information, signed under penalty of perjury, relating to his/her purchase of Organic Root Stimulator® and Organic Root Salon® (including where the purchase took place, the quantity purchased, and the approximate dates). Class Members who submit a Valid Claim with purchase receipts will be refunded $10.00, with a limit of two (2) bottles refunded. Any remaining funds will be donated to a court-approved charitable organization. What Are My Options? • File a Claim. You must remain in the Class to file a claim. You will be bound by the Court’s rulings, but you can object to the Settlement. Claim Forms must be signed and postmarked (or submitted online) by October 9, 2014. By remaining in the Class, you will release claims against Namaste as outlined in the detailed Notice, available below. • Exclude yourself and keep your right to sue the Defendant. Your written request for exclusion must be postmarked by October 9, 2014. • Object to the Settlement and/or appear in Court, only if you remain in the Class. You may hire your own attorney for these purposes, but do not have to. Your written request to object or appear must be postmarked by October 9, 2014. The Court will hold a hearing (the “Fairness Hearing”) on January 5, 2015 at 8:30 a.m. in Department 5 at the courthouse located at 4050 Main Street Riverside, California 92501 to decide whether to approve the Settlement and determine the amount of attorneys’ fees and Plaintiffs’ incentive awards. This Notice is a summary only. To get details on how to file a Claim, exclude yourself, object or appear in the case please visit: www.OrganicRootSettlement.com, call: 1- (888) 554-3378, or write: Namaste Settlement Administrator, P.O. only speaking with other future sailors. However after each competition the groups grew closer in proximity and conversation. By the end of the challenge Marine poolees and future sailors were cheering each other on through each event regardless of branch. They were giving one another high fives and congratulating the winners as well as anyone who gave it their all. Instead of reveling in their individual victories, competition winners were seen going back to run with racers who were still trying to get to the finish line, explaining ways to help others improve their pull-ups, and cheering for competitors to keep going with the exercises even if they were exhausted. “I really liked this challenge because I wanted to focus on improving my weaknesses,” said Bridget Duarte, a future sailor from Riverside. “The Marines had a female who did like 9 pullups, and it motivates me because if I see how she is able to do it, then maybe I can improve mine.” While some poolees saw this event as purely exercise, others viewed it as a way to get to know their future brothers and sisters in arms.

This event was great for camaraderie. Anytime everyone is giving a competition their all, it is going to be a good time. It didn’t matter if you were here for the Navy or the Marines, we were here to have fun and encourage each other to be our best, explained Cassandra Escobar, a poolee set to leave for recruit training in 2015. As the last event came to a close and everyone gathered around the picnic tables for lunch, participants were not avoiding the other branches or asking who won. Everyone was too busy laughing and having a great time with their new friends and soon to be fellow service members to check the final score. Currie and Razo plan on repeating this interservice challenge in the future with hopes of expanding it to include more substations and Navy recruiting offices.

Introducing

Victor Torres, Chief Logistics Specialist for U.S. Navy San Bernardino resident and proud mother-inlaw Ellen Turner recently wrote about her sonin-law Victor Moreno who will be discharged with honors from the United States Navy on July 18, 2014 after 24-years of service.

T

his letter comes to you as a special request on behalf of myself and the family of my Son-in-Law, Chief Victor Hugo Moreno. Victor has served 24 years of his 42-years of life to preserve our freedom and on July 18, 2014 Victor will retire from the United States Navy. He has lived his entire adult life in service to the American people. Can you imagine going in the Navy at age 18 and when you retire you are a father of four adult children and a 6-month grand daughter. He missed the birth of his children, their first day of school, the first steps they made, the first bike ride, learning how to drive, graduating from high school, first love, and the birth of my first great-grandchild (born on Christmas) not to mention all the missed holidays, birthdays, and anniversaries. His wife of 24 years is Conna Turner Moreno, oldest son Victor Moreno, daughter Nia Turner Moreno Jarmon, youngest son Emmanuel Moreno and granddaughter Grace Jarmon. Chief Logistics Specialist Victor H. Moreno Torres was born in CD. Morelos, Baja Ca., Mexico. In 1976 his parents, Roberto Moreno and Beatriz Torres, moved his brother, Robert Moreno and him to California, when his little brother, German Moreno, was born. They settled in San Bernardino, in 1984 and he graduated from San Bernardino High School in 1990, joined the Navy and went to Basic Training in Great Lakes, Illinois in Aug 1990. After Basic Training he went home and married his wife the former Conna A. Turner, then went on to SK “A” School in Meridian Mississippi, and graduated in Dec 1990. On January 5, 1991 he reported to his first sea duty assignment, USS ELLIOT (DD-967) a Spruance class destroyer out of San Diego, Ca. Completed two Western Pacific Deployments (WESTPAC), “91-92” and “93”, and picked up

SK3 along the way. Most important his first son, Victor A. Moreno and only daughter, Nia I. U. Moreno were born during this time! In October of 1994, he transferred to his first Shore Duty at Naval Sub Base Pt. Loma, San Diego. Picked up SK2 during this time but more importantly his youngest son, Emmanuel A. Moreno, was born! In July of 1997 he reported to PCD (Pre Com Detachment) Pearl Harbor and in January of 1998 he went to Avondale, New Orleans along with his crew to take the USS PEARL HARBOR (LSD-52), a Harpers Ferry class Amphibious Assault Ship, from the shipyard. Completed two WESTPAC’s, “00” and “01-02”. He completed his Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist qualification (ESWS) during this time, and was meritoriously promoted to SK1 under the Command Advancement Program (CAP) in June of 2001. Transferred back to shore duty in August 2002, prior to reporting to his new command he volunteered for the SEMINAR (Senior Enlisted Minority Advisor to Recruiters) Program, worked with Naval Recruiting District San Diego for two weeks. Reported to COMSEACONWINGPAC, NAS North Island, San Diego in October 2002, tasked to work at ASD (Aviation Support Detachment) and was part of a training team that introduced Rifle (Relevant Information for Leadership) Training to NAS North Island, NAS Whidbey Island and MALS 11 at MCAS Miramar. Was promoted to Chief Petty Officer in September and in October transferred back to sea. Reported to USS PINKNEY (DDG-91), an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer out of San Diego. Completed RIMPAC ‘06” and one WESPAC “07” and volunteered for an IA assignment to Al asad Air Base, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2008, was awarded his first Navy Commendation Medal. In March 2009 he transferred back to shore. Reported to Expeditionary Combat Readiness Center (ECRC) Detachment San Diego in April 2009. As the Family

Readiness Chief he attended the first DoD Joint Military Family Readiness Conference in Chicago, I. His daughter Nia graduated from high school in Moreno Valley during this time! Transferred back to sea in April 2012. In April 2012 he reported to MCM Crew Leader on board USS WARRIOR (MCM-10) an Avenger Class Mine Countermeasures ship out of San Diego. Completed a one year deployment to 5th Fleet onboard WARRIOR and USS SCOUT (MCM8) and in July 2013 transferred to his current crew MCM CREW BULWARK and deployed again to 5th Fleet onboard USS SENTRY (MCM-3) from December 2013 to June 2014, his granddaughter, Grace Niara Sofia Moreno Jarmon, was born during this deployment! LSC Moreno’s personal awards include the Navy Commendation Medal (three awards), Navy Achievement Medal (four awards), Good Conduct Medal (seven awards), and various unit and campaign awards.
