hen I was a little girl summertime for my family was always a time of exploration. If we weren’t driving across the country to my parents’ hometowns of Trenton, North Carolina or Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, we were finding ways to entertain and educate ourselves right here in Southern California. Sometimes we would venture to Los Angeles and visit my grandmother before making a stop at the La Brea Tar Pits. Yes, the Tar Pits. I always thought it was cool to be exposed to prehistoric history right there in the middle of the tall buildings and constant traffic of the mid-Wilshire district. Other afternoons we found ourselves at Laguna Beach exploring sea life in the tide pools and cooling down as we took our shoes off and kicked around in the water. But most days we stayed close to home. Because I grew up in a family with four children, two parents, and one income, we often had very little extra money to spend on expensive family activities. We became experts in finding fun things to do right here in the IE. One of my very favorite summertime activities was going to the San Bernardino County Museum. I was a nerd. I loved the museum. I loved it so much that as soon as my son Alexander was old enough I enrolled him in whatever programs they had scheduled for the summer. Perhaps that’s where he gets his love of history. His favorite exhibit, and one I enjoyed as a child as well, was mammal hall featuring all types of mammals from mountain lions to a polar bear. I would have nightmares about those animals coming to life, but that didn’t curb my curiosity or interest. And then there was the nocturnal creatures exhibit and all things reptilian. During one visit we found ourselves in the exhibit just in time to watch the boa constrictor complete its daily meal. As gross as it was, we just couldn’t look away. Once the VOICE staff decided to feature interesting activities close to home for this issue, we were surprised by some of the cool things happening right under our noses, like the Tour de Big Bear. Considered one of the best cycling stages, riders cruise over high-mountain passes around both Big Bear and Baldwin Lakes. And while I had heard about the Living Desert since my nephews Maximus and Benjamin Roman love it, I had no idea that there was a wildlife hospital and conservation center there. The Inland Empire can now boast several world-class concert venues, including Pechanga’s Theater, Citizens Business Bank Arena, and Agua Caliente’s The Show so we don’t have to travel to Orange County or Los Angeles to see some of the best entertainers and performers. We hope you find something of interest in this issue. And that once you do, you take the time to explore some of the entertaining and educational options available to you right here close to home.

Taking Another Look at the 31st Congressional Race and Eloise Reyes

A

few months ago I wrote in my opinion column about the 31st Congressional District race and that candidate Eloise Reyes might not know what it would take to run for congress. I was basing this assessment on the information I had at the time. Since then, Eloise has contacted me to discuss her credentials, endorsements, fundraising ability, and long history of community involvement. As we talked it became apparent that Eloise has been involved in significant projects which have benefited the community, including working with many of my friends namely Art Forbes, Draymond Crawford, Charles Seymour, Elvia Read, and Charly Marshall in the founding of the Community Health Center in Bloomington. The center is still in existence today and serves people in three counties. I shared with Eloise that her involvement was critical to this community since health care is a national priority and she needs to let the public become aware of her experience. Eloise also said she has received the endorsement of Emily’s List one of the nation’s top political groups whose mission is to increase

the number of women serving in government as policymakers. Eloise also said her decision to run was discussed at great length with her husband Frank, family, and friends before she decided to leave her lucrative law practice and commit family funds to this political endeavor. She said her supporters come from a wide range of people, groups, organizations and from across the region. She is aware of what happened in the last election that cost the democrats a seat that they should have captured and is convinced she is the only one of the four current democratic candidates who can defeat Republican Gary Miller, who currently occupies the seat. The National Democratic Congressional Committee has endorsed Redlands Mayor Pete Aguilar who finished at the top of the list of Democrats who ran for the seat in 2012. Now while I have given my support to Pete, many of you have not. So please take a very close look at Eloise Reyes.

Bobby Blue Bland’s Music Will Live Forever

Remembering Albert Casey

L

ast week we lost one of our treasures, blues singer Bobby Blue Bland. He is one of the singers I currently listen to everyday along with BB King, Brook Benton, Sam Cooke, Jimmy Reed, Howling Wolf, Muddy Waters, Jackie Wilson, Al Green, Diana Washington and a host of others mixed with gospel and spirituals. I had the good fortune of catching Bobby Blue Bland at the famous 54 Club on Broadway in Los Angeles during the early sixties. He had a hit called, “I Pity the Fool” and one could hear it blasting from car radios as you rode down the streets of Los Angeles. While he will be missed his music will live on forever, especially for blues lovers like me.

ost people may not know of Albert Casey of San Bernardino’s A. Phillip Randolph Institute. Casey was not a learned man from our educational institutions but he had a PhD in organized labor and in keeping the AFL/CIO San Bernardino – Riverside Labor Council on its toes to make sure Blacks and Latinos were hired on federally funded construction projects. I remember how Casey would come into the Black Voice and American News office on Baseline Avenue and say to me and then publisher, Sam Martin: “I have some contractors that need some attention, can you provide them some free space [in your publications] because they have no Blacks or Latinos working?” Casey may be gone but the need still exists to continue the fight as no local Blacks, Latinos nor local White contractors are currently working on any of the $4.4 billion construction contracts in the county.

T

he San Bernardino Community College District (SBCCD) Board of Trustees installed newly elected Student Trustees Yasmeen Flores from Crafton Hills College and Rosalinda Sosa Sanchez from San Bernardino Valley College. Board President Dr. Donald Singer swore in the two students at their regularly scheduled meeting on June 13. SBCCD Chancellor Bruce Baron said, “Serving on the Board of Trustees provides students with the opportunity to learn first-hand about balancing the needs of their various constituency groups against the constraints of the state budget. Previous student trustees have identified specific issues that their electorates were interested in, have researched those issues, and proffered policies and procedures that the Board has taken very seriously. We look forward to working with both Student Trustees and to providing them with a rewarding learning experience.” Crafton Hills College Student Trustee Yasmeen Flores is currently the Student Body

President at Crafton Hills College. Beginning her college education last fall, Yasmeen did not wait long to become deeply involved at Crafton Hills. Originally from Anahiem, she made her way to Crafton in hopes of pursuing a degree in Political Science. Prior to becoming Student Trustee she held numerous leadership positions, including Social Events Officer, Student Lead for ‘Senior Day 2013’, and was the student representative on the Student Success Engagement Enrollment Management Committee (SSEEM). San Bernardino Valley College Student Trustee Rosalinda Sosa Sanchez was born in Santa Rosa and moved to San Bernardino when she started grade school. School was a challenge for her growing up but, she always knew she wanted to be the first in her family to attend college and she is thrilled to be working towards accomplishing her goal. Her major is Bio-Pre Med. She was inspired to serve as Trustee because she loves to help and represent her community. According to Rosalinda, “there is no better way to help my community

pointofview We Must Build Our Greatest Strength: Diversity "For a country regarded as the paramount leader in a multicultural world, the United States has yet to embrace its own diversity; continuing failure to do so will have profound consequences for governance." That quote came from a 1996 report by Allan E. Goodman, former executive dean at the Georgetown School of Foreign Service. For decades, American leaders in business, education and economics have lamented the wide racial and ethnic gaps in our education system. The recent Supreme Court ruling on affirmative action reminded us that we have a long way to go. In the case of Fisher v. Texas, the Supreme Court ruled on the constitutionality of the University of Texas' admissions policy. The university currently allows admissions officers to consider an applicant's race among a number of other qualifying factors. The Court voted to send the case back to a lower court of appeals. In doing so, they reaffirmed the use of race in admissions, and the importance of educational diversity in the 21st century. The decision in Fisher upheld an important precedent set in the 2003 case of Gruttinger v. Bollinger. In that case, Justice Sandra Day O'Connor refuted the idea that our society had advanced beyond affirmative action. She argued that the need for "cross-racial understanding" was still necessary to break down racial stereotypes, and that "student body diversity is a compelling state interest." Justice O'Connor's argument was based on sound social research. In her words, "major American businesses have made clear that the skills needed in today's increasingly global marketplace can only be developed through exposure to widely diverse people, cultures, ideas, and viewpoints." Like Allan

Goodman, Justice O'Connor also saw diversity as a national interest. This is even truer today. When Goodman wrote about the multicultural world in 1996, only one out of every thirteen Americans had access to the Internet. Google, Twitter and Facebook were still rough ideas scribbled in students' sketchpads. Seventeen years later, technological advances in communications, travel and trade have given rise to a new era of globalization. Leaders in business and government need to know how to work with people of vastly different races, cultures and perspectives. We will be stronger as a nation if we embrace our growing diversity and ensure that the pathways to leadership remain wide open. Numerous studies reveal that mere interaction is the best way to avoid intergroup conflict. Sociologists have even found that diversity increases opportunities for creativity. In light of the Supreme Court's decision, America's educational institutions should recommit to fair and thoughtful ways to foster diversity. In the coming months, the NAACP will work with universities, policymakers, and the business community to see that qualified students from a diversity of backgrounds get a close look and a fair shot at admission to top schools. Justice O'Connor wrote that "effective participation by members of all racial and ethnic groups in the civic life of our Nation is essential if the dream of one Nation, indivisible, is to be realized." Our country's pledge is to be one nation, and our country's challenge is to lead a global economy that is increasingly flat. If America is to maintain its role as a moral and economic leader in the 21st century, we must build on our greatest strength: diversity.

pointofview Can Racist Behaviors Be Changed?

T

he latest saga involving Paula Deen gives us a wonderful opportunity to have a courageous conversation about what constitutes racist behavior, its root cause, the impact of racism on people of color as well as the racist, and strategies for confronting and combating racism. In the case of Ms. Deen, her admitted racist comments are very likely a reflection of the way she was raised, where she was raised, and the benefits she received as a result of her racist beliefs. Racism is a learned behavior that is developed by commonly held beliefs and experiences within one’s family, friends, and society. Racism is often preceded by negative stereotypes that contributes to how one sees another group based on the color of that group’s skin. Racism impacts everyone negatively. Those who are bombarded by racist comments and discriminatory practices are at risk of developing mental, physical, and spiritual health issues. For example, these negative experiences cause individuals to suffer from mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety, as well as physical health challenges, such as heart disease, hypertension, etc. There is an increasing interest in understanding the mental health condition of those who are hateful to people of color and exhibit racist beliefs and behaviors. The question remains, what can Ms. Deen do to correct her obvious racist comments and

actions? First, it would be important for her to acknowledge that her comments and requests of staff to dress as slaves for a plantation themed wedding were disrespectful, harmful, and ultimately racist. All healing and reconciliation efforts are best achieved when the perpetrator takes responsibility for his or her actions with humility. Second, it would be important for Ms. Deen to seek help from a trained mental health professional to help her to abandon racist views as is discussed in the work of Dr. Janet Helms and colleagues that focus on White Racial Identity Development.

Dr. Gloria Morrow Founder, GM Psychological Services

Third, Ms. Deen should be given an opportunity to become exposed to and immersed in the African American community through her participation in community service events. Once a person becomes fully aware and acknowledged his or her racist views, he or she is in the unique position of seeking out opportunities to learn about communities of color, embrace their culture, and become an advocate to ensure that racism is eradicated. And fourth, communities of color, and in this case the African American community must be willing to forgive and restore Ms. Deen and others like her, which is critical to the process of healing for all. Change is possible for anyone who acknowledges their condition, seeks and gets help for it, begins to implement those changes in every aspect of their lives, and has people in their lives who will serve as accountability partners.

Rethinking Aspirin Therapy – Risks And Benefits Dear Dr. Levister: For more than five years, I’ve taken a daily low dose aspirin to prevent a heart attack. I understand this is no longer recommended. Have the rules changed? G.D. Dear G.D.: Is an aspirin a day the right thing for you? It's not as easy a decision as it sounds. Daily aspirin therapy may lower your risk of heart attack, but daily aspirin therapy isn't for everyone. You should take a daily aspirin only if your doctor advises you to do so. If you have had a heart attack or stroke, your doctor will likely recommend you take a daily aspirin unless you have a serious allergy or history of bleeding. If you have a high risk of having a first heart attack, your doctor might recommend aspirin after weighing the risks and benefits. You shouldn't start daily aspirin therapy on your own. Although taking an occasional aspirin or two is safe for most adults to use for headaches, body aches or fever, daily use of aspirin can have serious side effects, including internal bleeding. Aspirin interferes with your blood's clotting

action. When you bleed, your blood's clotting cells, called platelets, build up at the site of your wound. The platelets help form a plug that seals the opening in your blood vessel to stop bleeding. Aspirin therapy reduces the clumping action of platelets — possibly preventing a heart attack. But this clotting can also happen within the vessels that supply your heart with blood. If your blood vessels are already narrowed from atherosclerosis — the buildup of fatty deposits in your arteries — a fatty deposit in your vessel lining can burst. Then, a blood clot can quickly form and block the artery. This prevents blood flow to the heart and causes a heart attack. Although aspirin has been recommended in the past for certain groups of people without a history of heart attack, there's some disagreement among doctors about this approach. Guidelines are changing and have varied between organizations. The bottom line is that before taking a daily aspirin you should have a discussion with your doctor.

Kids Can Avoid Summer Brain Drain at the San Bernardino County Museum A series of informal programs at the San Bernardino County Museum will help kids “Avoid Summer Brain Drain” this summer. Activities are included with paid museum admission. No reservations are required, and the whole family is invited. “The museum is sponsoring Avoid Summer Brain Drain to make summer fun and productive for all ages,” said Jolene Redvale, the museum’s curator of education. “When children participate in summer activities that engage their brains through creativity and active thinking, they retain more of what they learn in school and are better prepared for the new school year.” Programs will be held every Wednesday and Saturday through July 31 from 11 am to 4 pm; Fridays until August 2 from 11 am to 4 pm; and Sundays July 14 and July 28 from 1 pm to 4 pm. Activities are chosen by staff and volunteers on the day of the program. Among the activities are arts and crafts with different media, observation of local birds, science, history, active games, and board games. Some specific activities are already on the calendar: Leatherworks: History & Activity, on Wednesday July 17 and Saturday, July 27, from 11 am to 4 pm, sponsored by the Tandy Leather Company of San Bernardino. History at Work and Play, on July 19, July 26 and July 31, from 9 am to noon. See what housekeeping was like in the 1880s! Try candle making and playing with traditional toys. Catch a glimpse into life before electricity and video games. These activities are outdoors. “Keep your brain active!” said Redvale. “Find personal talents, enjoy fun and creative activities, make memories, and learn something new.” Visitors can call the museum at (909) 307-2669

Smokey Robinson will be Live in Concert July 12, 2013 at 8 pm and Diana Ross will be in concert August 4, 2013 at 7 pm. Smokey Robinson was the founder and front man of the popular Motown vocal group The Miracles, for which he also served as the group's chief songwriter and producer. Robinson led the group from its 1955 origins as The Five Chimes until 1972 when he announced a retirement from the stage to focus on his role as Motown's vice president. However, Robinson returned to the music industry as a solo artist the following year, later having solo hits such as "Baby That's Backatcha",

"A Quiet Storm", "The Agony and the Ecstasy", "Cruisin'", "Being With You" and "Just to See Her". Following the sale of Motown Records in 1988, Robinson left Motown in 1990. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. Diana Ross first rose to fame as a founding member and lead singer of the Motown group The Supremes during the 1960s. After leaving the group in 1970, Ross began a solo career that has included successful ventures into film and Broadway. She received a Best Actress Academy Award nomination for her role as Billie Holiday in Lady Sings the Blues (1972), for which she won a Golden Globe award for most promising female newcomer. She has won seven American Music Awards, and won a Special Tony Award for her one-woman show, An Evening with Diana Ross, in 1977. In 1976, Billboard magazine named her the "Female Entertainer of the Century." In 1993, the Guinness Book of World Records declared Diana Ross the most successful female music artist in history due to her success in the United States and United Kingdom for having more hits than any female artist in the charts with a career total of 70 hit singles with her work with the Supremes and as a solo artist. Diana Ross has sold more than 100 million records worldwide when her releases with the Supremes and as a solo artist are tallied. In 1988, Ross was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as member of the Supremes alongside Florence Ballard and Mary

Wilson. From rock to pop and jazz to country, and the best of stand-up, the Pechanga Theater ranks among the top Southern California performance venues. In addition to concerts Broadway theatrical performances and musicals are scheduled throughout the year. Each of the 1200 permanent seats affords an excellent view of the stage and the intimacy of the Theater provides the audience with an up-close and personal atmosphere sometimes lost in huge arena performances. First rate sound and lighting systems further enhance the enjoyment and refreshments, including full bar service, are available in the foyer prior to shows and during intermissions. All ages are welcome in the Pechanga Theater. Those 17 years of age and younger must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Mission Galleria: Part of the changing face of Downtown Riverside

By Laura L. Klure olks over age 60 might remember when the main shopping area in each Inland Empire city was called “Downtown.” Shopping centers started cropping up in the late 1950s, with more being built every decade. Downtowns all over the country faced challenges, which continue today. Although the uses of some buildings have changed, Downtown Riverside still has a pleasant assortment of stores, one of which is the Mission Galleria. Across from the Mission Inn, on the southeast corner of Main Street and Mission Inn Avenue, at 3700 Main Street, is a building that was home to Riverside’s Sears Roebuck store from 1938 to 1964. (In the past, this building’s address was sometimes given as 3720 or 3714 Main.) Designed for Sears by the noted architect Henry L.A. Jekel, the building has two main floors, a basement, and a mezzanine. Initially the Jekel building also housed a Banks Drug Store and Tiernan’s Typewriters. Jekel designed many other buildings in Riverside, including: Benedict Castle; an early

part of the recently re-done “Fox Block,” facing on Market Street; structures that are now part of Cal Baptist University; and distinctive private homes. When this writer worked part-time for Sears, in the late 50s to early 60s, it was one of Downtown Riverside’s go-to places for clothing, furniture, and other household needs. The automobile department was across an alley, in a building that’s now home to the fine Mario’s Place restaurant. My work assignments often took me to Sears’ men’s department, where some guys were reluctant to have a short young gal help them find their personal clothes. In early years, the shoe department had an X-ray machine, where you could see how the bones of your feet looked inside a shoe. I also worked in the catalog sales office, where, in the pre-internet era, people ordered things by calling Sears on the telephone. After Sears moved to Arlington Avenue in 1964, various short-term businesses occupied the Jekel building. The Mission Galleria moved into the building in 1997. Since then it has been filled with a huge variety of antiques, collectables, vintage clothing & furniture, jewelry, books, CD’s,

and whatever one of the more than 150 vendors might bring in to sell. It’s truly a fun place to visit, but kids need to be carefully watched in the crowded spaces. In addition to the antiques, the Mission Galleria building has places to eat and drink. The Galleria Café offers an assortment of sandwiches and salads for lunch. For more information, phone the Café at (951) 686-0950 or the Mission Galleria at (951) 276-8000. We don’t have space here to talk at length about the Rubidoux Building, which was torn down and replaced by the one Jekel designed for Sears, or about the earlier location of Sears at 5th and Main. The stories of changes in Downtown could go on and on…. For those who would like to see many interesting pictures of Riverside’s past and present, the Arcadia book, “Riverside – Then & Now,” by Glenn Edward Freeman is a good source. Community Church Takes Leap of Faith to Save Money

Palm Springs Aerial Tramway

What are some of your favorite summertime places to take your family in the IE? “Just went to SkyZone Trampoline Park in Riverside with my daughter Vivian. It’s the bomb!” --Louis Davis, Corona

“Palm Springs Air Museum, Palm Springs Art Museum, Palm Springs Aerial Tram, Agua Caliente Cultural Museum, The Living Desert, Joshua Tree, Noah Purifoy’s “Environment” outdoor art display (near Joshua Tree), and the General Patton museum, out at Chiriaco Summit. I’d also recommend the Indian Canyons, but they’re really hot right now (Andreas Canyon is cooler, though).” --Alva Johnson, LaQuinta

“Fillippi Pizza Grotto in Norco.” --Marian Semic, via Facebook

Leap of Faith Community Baptist Church, Inc. is a small congregation that has rejoiced in the money it has saved on its electric bill. Established in 1997, the Inglewood, Calif., church has saved about $3,500 in less than two years by simply changing 91 of its lights to compact fluorescent ones as part of Southern California Edison’s (SCE) energy-efficiency program. The arrival of summer and high temperatures brings higher electric bills, and Pastor Glass believes it is important that organizations, businesses and individuals take advantage of money-and-energysaving programs. Pastor Glass learned about SCE’s Energy Efficient Express Solutions program from a church member. Brother Rutherford is a contractor who mentioned that the church lighting was very dim and that a simple solution would be programs offered by SCE to increase lighting and generate savings. “Signing up for the program was easy,” said Pastor Glass. “The program was free and it is paying for itself.” The pastor of the congregation of 50 admitted that he did not know much about other programs offered by SCE, but that he was interested in learning more. Michele Myers-Heard is an SCE account executive who focuses on helping faith-based organizations use energy wisely. In addition to switching the lights, Myers-Heard also discussed other energy solutions with Pastor Glass, such as the Summer Discount Plan. “Get the information and make a decision on whether or not a program would work for you or your business,” said Pastor Glass. “The program we have at Leap of Faith is working for us and that is something that I can stand behind.” But the savings aren’t limited to places of worship, according to Myers-Heard. “Whether you are a business or a resident, we want to help our customers save money on their bills by helping them partner with us,” she said. “We want to help our customers be a part of the solution by making sure we have enough safe and affordable energy for all of us.” For more information on ways to conserve energy and save money, go to SCE.com/save. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority. A hearing on the petition will be held in this court as follows: Date: JULY 20, 2013 Time: 8:30 A.M. Dept.: 08, 4050 Main Street, Riverside, CA 92501. If you object to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney. If you are a creditor or a contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the court and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within four months from the date of first issuance of letters as provided in Probate Code section 9100. The time for filing claims will not expire before four months from the hearing date noticed above. You may examine the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250. The City of Redlands, The “Jewel of the Inland Empire”

T

his year Redlands is celebrating the 125th anniversary of its’ founding. Considered the “Jewel of the Inland Empire,” the city remains home to iconic historic landmarks Kimberly-Crest House and Gardens, the Morey Mansion, and Redlands Bowl. Known in 1900 as “The City of Millionaires,” and later as “The City of Beautiful Homes”, Redlands was founded in 1881 and incorporated in 1888, and for much of its history, it was the “Washington Navel Orange Growing Capital of the World,” with the citrus industry as the main focus of its economy. Through the years the economy may have changed, but that special feeling of community in a small town hasn’t. Tree-lined State Street is still comprised primarily of beautiful historic buildings and locally-owned shops and boutiques. Early History The first settler on the site of the present Redlands is recorded to have erected a hut at the corner of what is now Cajon St. and Cypress Ave.; he was a sheepherder, and the year, 1865. In 1869, Barry Roberts, followed a year later by the Craw and Glover families. The first school teacher in Lugonia, George W. Beattie arrived in 1874, shortly followed by the town's first Black settler, Israel Beal. Railroads Provide Interurban Connection In the 1880s, the arrival of the Southern Pacific and Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroads, connecting Southern California to San Francisco and Salt Lake triggered a land boom, with speculators such as John W. North flooding the area now known as the Inland Empire. North and others saw the area, with its hot, dry climate and ready access to water as an ideal center for citrus production. The city of Redlands was soon established by Frank E. Brown, a civil engineer, and E. G. Judson, a New York stock broker, to provide a center (along with North's nearby settlement at Riverside) for the burgeoning citrus industry. They named their city “Redlands” after the color of the adobe soil. So large had the area grown by 1888 that it was decided to incorporate. The Pacific Electric Railway completed an interurban connection between Los Angeles and San Bernardino in 1914, providing a convenient, speedy connection to the fast-growing city of Los Angeles and its new port at San Pedro, bringing greater prosperity to the town

and a new role as a vacation destination for wealthy Angelenos. Redlands was the eastern terminus of the "Big Red Car" system. At its peak, PE operated five local routes in Redlands, with streetcars running to Smiley Heights, and on Orange, Olive, and Citrus Avenues.

Local Landmarks A.K. Smiley Public Library, a Moorish-style library built in 1898. Located behind the Smiley Library is the Lincoln Shrine, the only memorial honoring the "Great Emancipator", the sixteenth president, west of the Mississippi River.

Citrus Industry In the spring of 1882, Mr. E. J. Waite of Wisconsin planted the first orange grove in the city. For almost 75 years, the city was the center of the largest navel orange producing region in the world. By the late 1930s, Redlands was a fruit-packing center surround by more than 15,000 acres of citrus groves. The city produced more than 4,200 railcars of navel oranges and 1,300 cars of Valencia oranges during the 1937–38 growing season.

Redlands Bowl, built in 1930, is home of the oldest continuously free outdoor concert series in the United States. Morey Mansion on Terracina Boulevard considered America’s Favorite Victorian.

The citrus industry declined in the area as more agricultural areas were replaced by subdivisions, and all three citrus packing houses (two in downtown and one on San Bernardino Avenue) had closed by the end of the 1900s. Today only one packing house remains to serve the needs of approximately the 2,500 acres of citrus that remains in production in the area.

Kimberly Crest House and Gardens, a home museum featured on the PBS series “America’s Castles.” Named after the family that purchased the house, the owners of Kimberly-Clark (makers of paper goods and Kleenex), it is a beautiful mansion set high on a hill overlooking the whole valley. Notable Fact The city has been visited by three U.S presidents: William McKinley was the first in 1901, followed by Theodore Roosevelt in 1903 and William Howard Taft in 1909. Source: Wikipedia
