here are rare and unique individuals who we wish could stay in this world forever…who remind us that we are all special and have significant gifts to contribute to humanity. Brother Jerry Gore was one of those people. He was not my biological brother – he had many of his own siblings (he comes from a family of ten) – but, like the countless number of people he considered kin, I felt like part of the family. I’m sure the hundreds of educators and parents who learned from him during our annual underground railroad study tours over the past two decades felt like part of his family too. Brother Jerry’s presence was grand, but he was humble. He had a special talent, one person noted at his memorial service earlier this week, of making you feel special. He was so full of love and so full of life, someone else commented. During his first career as an administrator at Morehead State University in Kentucky, he was known for his spirit of encouragement. Student after student considered him more than a mentor. “He had a special gift of seeing in you what you couldn’t see in yourself,” his friend Larry Burns said to me. “When I was being negative, he told me to “close your eyes to the ugly and see only the beautiful in the world.” I overheard one young man tell his friends, “He always made us feel like we were the king of kings.” But Brother Jerry’s lasting legacy will be as the “Moses of Maysville,” the small agricultural town located in Northeastern Kentucky that he called home. A town better known as the birthplace of the Clooneys (yes, that’s Rosemary for some of you and George for the rest) than for its history of slavery. As the “Ambassador of Mason County,” where Maysville is located, he was known for his knowledge of the community’s history, especially that of the Underground Railroad, or as Brother Jerry would often say to us the “UPground Railroad”. As a community historian and cultural preservationist, he led tours throughout the region, sharing a history of enslavement etched in the landscape. As a griot, he magically weaved the tales of freedom in the stories of John Price, Addison White, the Rev. Elisha W. Green, and others, teaching us the true meaning of Kujichagulia, the fierce “self-determination” these individuals had to exhibit to take their own freedom and leave bondage behind. For as long as I knew him, Brother Jerry wore a leather pouch around his neck imprinted with the Sankofa symbol, another concept he believed in and passed down to others, that of always looking back to move forward and acknowledging the lessons we have to learn from the past. We honor the past, Brother Jerry always reminded us, because there is a tremendous amount of wisdom to be gained for the future. Every year before we led a group of participants up Rankin Hill following in the footsteps of thousands of freedom seekers who were determined to take their own freedom, he would have us join hands and say the name of an ancestor aloud who was no longer here on earth, but whose spirit remains with us. After each name was called we would say in unison “Ashe,” which is the Yoruban affirmation used in greetings and prayers. We lost a unique soul when we lost Brother Jerry, an advocate for civil rights and social change, a true abolitionist, whose legacy will live on through all of us that he touched. Ashe, Brother Jerry Gore, Ashe.

San Bernardino Wildfire Threatens Homes
San Bernardino-The Pilot Fire was first reported in the San Bernardino Mountains just after noon on Sunday near Highway 138Â north of Crestline and west of Lake Arrowhead. By Tuesday afternoon the fire had involved nearly seven thousand acres, forced the evacuation of nearly 4,700; and threatened approximately 5,300 buildings in the San Bernardino National Forest. The fire was less than ten percent contained. Favorable wind conditions early Tuesday helped mitigate the threat to the community of Lake Arrowhead, at least temporarily. The communities of Lake Arrowhead, Hesperia, Apple Valley were under evacuation orders. In addition, Apple Valley and Hesperia School Districts remained closed.

Suspended: Lawsuit Alleges License Suspensions Unfairly Impact the Poor Los Angeles
W
hen a decision is ultimately reached in a lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court next week, the outcome may reverberate around the state. The suit alleges the Los Angeles Superior Court improperly suspended the driver’s licenses of tens of thousands of poor people because they cannot afford to pay their traffic fines. It also alleges the court fails to determine whether a motorist has chosen to willfully ignore paying the fines or just could not afford to pay it before the Department of Motor Vehicles is authorized by the court to suspend the license. The lawsuit comes on the heels of a couple of major actions related to this issue in recent years. The first confirmation that something was sorely wrong in regards to the impact traffic tickets were having on the nation’s poor came under intense scrutiny by the Justice Department a couple of years ago. The Justice Department’s focus came in response to the police shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri in August 2014. A Justice Department investigation into the Ferguson Police Department in the wake of the shooting revealed the driver’s licenses of Blacks
were suspended at a rate disproportionate to their percentage of the population in Ferguson, as was the frequency with which Blacks were subjected to other low-level enforcement. On the heels of the Justice Department Report, in a separate study in California, civil rights advocates determined more than four million Californians had their licenses suspended for unpaid tickets since 2006.The highest suspension rates were found to be in some of the poorest neighborhoods in the state whose residents were primarily Black and Latino. There is no question the cost of traffic tickets increased exponentially in California during the Great Recession. According to the lawsuit, a ticket that used to cost $100 now costs $500. In addition, the $500 amount is quickly increased to $800 if the first payment deadline is missed. In the meantime, a bill is pending before the California state legislature to stop the automatic suspension of driver’s licenses for failure to pay minor traffic tickets. The measure was introduced by Sen. Bob Hertzberg (D-Van Nuys). One of the lawyers involved in the case,
Antionette Dozier of the Western Center on Law and Poverty, argued in regards to individuals impacted by such suspensions, “If they are poor and don’t have the money to pay, by definition, they cannot be found to have willfully failed to pay.” Critics are hopeful the state legislature will take action to pass the bill and that Governor Brown has the courage to sign it. N E W S I N B R I E F Teachers Can Still Register for Student Mock Elections Sacramento - State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson has invited teachers to sign-up for their schools to participate in California’s MyVote Student Mock Election, scheduled to take place on October 11, 2016. The purpose of the program is to help students become active voters as soon as they are old enough to vote. “Practical voting experiences, such as the MyVote Student Mock Election, can go a long way toward establishing civic participation as a lifelong habit,” Torlakson said. California students who participate in the Mock Election will “vote” for US President, US Senate, and several of the Propositions that will be on the November General Election ballot. Results will be reported to the Secretary of State’s office and made available online. Schools registered by August 20 will receive a mock election tool kit by mail. Teachers can register their school online at: sos.ca.gov/elections/student-mock-election/.

Back to School and Feeling Fine Riverside
A
s thousands of Inland Empire students exchange summer fun for school books and homework, there are some important health related considerations for parents to keep in mind. Studies show that healthy students are better learners. In the Inland Empire parents can find quality health care for their children at community health centers regardless of their ability to pay. These centers offer several services to kids and teens that can help ease their transition back to school as needed. Such services begin with the foundational requirement for vaccinations and immunizations. A new state law established a mandatory requirement for all children to be vaccinated. Current immunization records are required for school entry in California. Sixteen different diseases can be prevented with vaccines, including measles, chicken pox and pertussis (whooping cough) among others. Another service offered by community health centers is sports physicals. Student-athletes are required to complete their physical ahead of the start of the competitive season to make sure it is safe for
6
them to participate. Health experts also highlight the importance of children’s oral and visual health and stress these are areas that should not be overlooked. Some inland area residents may be unaware that many community health centers offer these services as part of their broader commitment to quality, integrated preventative care. Finally, being back at school means teens and children spend the majority of their time at school in close-quartered classrooms where germs can easily spread. Health care experts suggest to make sure your child is not exposing an underlying cold, flu or bug to other children, they should see their primary care doctor for a routine check-up. Additional resources can be found at shotsforschool.org/, kidshealth.org/ and cdc.gov/ features/back-to-school/index. html. Community health centers currently serve 25 million Americans each year with highquality

primary care. Remember, they will treat patients regardless of insurance or ability to pay. Health Center Partners is a consortium of member health centers operating 30 locations across Riverside County including Borrego Community Health Foundation and Clinicas de Salud del Pueblo. These centers can be a resource for families looking to stay healthy this fall and beyond. with Dr. Ernest Levister F.A.C.P., F.A.C.P.M.
Teen Pregnancy – Are You Responsible? Dear Dr. Levister: I’m 14 and pregnant. My mom says I’m not mature enough to be a parent. I say I’m not too young to love my child. L.E. Dear L.E.: It’s noble to say your child will be loved but love alone won’t put food in your baby’s mouth nor will it pay for your child’s college education. Parenting is hard work that requires more than just love. It’s pathetic that our schools don’t require classes in what is probably the most important legacy you’ll leave behind. Becoming a parent means being an adult 24-7. Becoming physically mature means you’ll need to mature emotionally and mentally too. A parent has many responsibilities. When it comes to child rearing, providing food, shelter, clothing and medical care are just the beginning of what is expected. A child needs mature guidance. Don’t expect to live out your own childhood while watching your child grow up without a rudder. Children need both of their parents’ love, attention and affection. Don’t depend on a family member(s) to raise your child. People who choose to become parents need to be prepared financially. You will need a steady income to provide for your child’s needs. Child rearing begins long before you give birth. Giving birth
means making healthy insightful choices. Get to know what’s happening inside your body physically and emotionally. As you prepare to become a parent here are some questions to ponder: Are you prepared to permanently alter your teenage life style? Identify sources of income beyond child support/government assistance. What is your relationship with the child’s father? Do you plan to stay in school? Are you receiving pre-natal care? Have you considered taking a parenting class? Are you eating properly, smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol, using illegal drugs or using legal drugs to excess. Do you exercise regularly? Are you getting enough sleep? Take some time to reflect on these questions. Your answers should give you some insight into what’s occurring in your body, some of what’s expected of you and whether you are ready to become a parent.

Trump Wants To Build Invisible Walls Too
A
fter publishing last week’s article and receiving feedback about that history lesson and what presidential candidate Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan means to some of us, I started thinking Hardy L. Brown about the “invisible Photo by benoitmalphettes.com walls” of my childhood in the south and thought I share those memories with you. When he talks about “building the wall,” he’s not just talking about the one at the Mexican border. I vividly remember my first trip to New York on a Greyhound bus with my late cousin Zelda Lee Barber. We were fresh eager beavers out of high school in 1960 ready to take over the world. We boarded the bus in Kinston and were regulated by law to sit in the back of the bus. Never having that experience of riding on a nice bus like Greyhound, I thought nothing at the time until we got into Washington D.C., our nation’s capital to make a transfer going on to New York. I noticed something different on the bus and that was Black people were told they could sit anywhere there was a vacant seat. This was new to me because down south Blacks sat in the back even though the 1955 bus boycott of Montgomery, Alabama had been won. I remember someone saying that we were crossing the Mason Dixon Line that separates
the north from the southern way of life. I had heard of the Mason Dixon Line, it was invisible in vision but very real when it came to the laws, customs and practices of people. I learned later in life that this imaginary line was actually created because of slavery. Even though those laws are off the books today some Blacks and Whites still live their lives as those they still exist. And that is why Donald Trump is doing so well with uneducated White men and so poorly with African Americans. We understand what he is saying and if elected will implement laws to bring back their good old days of terror. My other experience under Jim Crow Laws was total separation of the races: drinking from separate drinking fountains and watching movies in our cars from the back two rows of drive-in-theaters. My education was in a wooden building that our parents had to build while White children where housed in a brick building with central heating from one furnace. Our school had an individual potbelly coalburning heater that would heat those close to it while the other students would freeze. Our books were hand me downs from the White students with their names still written in them, the same was true when it came to school buses. Whites controlled the school board and the local, state and federal funds allocated to the district. They did allow us to have our own superintendent who reported to the White superintendent. They called that separate and equal even though the spending of money was never equal. When we went to town to shop for our annual

return to school we had to know the right sizes because we were not allowed to try clothes on. If you had to go to the restroom you would have to run all the way to the government building because the private department stores did not have restrooms for colored people. We could not eat nor sit and eat in stores like Woolworth’s. When entertainers like Fats Domino came to cities in the south they would put ropes down the middle aisle to prevent the races from touching each other. That was life in the south. This is what Donald Trump wants to turn America back into. A place where only White males will have the first offer for jobs, when they had no competition from women or any other group of people. He wants to return America to the days when America would import Asians to the country to labor for low wages. He wants to return America to the days before Cesar Chavez conducted boycotts for better working conditions for Mexican migrants workers. This is what Donald Trump is peddling to White America. Unfortunately too many of our fellow Americans are buying it. However, I still believe people who are of a sound mind and have a good moral compass to guide them are turning away from Trump’s kind of crazy thinking. Now I am sure some of you have different experiences that can educate voters. We must unite. Share your thoughts so others can learn from our struggle as a people and why we so vehemently denounce Trump. hardybrown@blackvoicenews.com

Fleming Enters Race for Mayor of Moreno Valley Moreno Valley
A
fter signing papers and being sworn in as an official candidate last week, Dr. Denise Fleming announced she has entered the race for mayor of the City of Moreno Valley. A navy veteran, Fleming has a demonstrated history of leadership experience. She currently serves as Vice President of the Moreno Valley School Board. She has also worked for Moreno Valley schools’ business office and is active with the African American Coalition in addition to the Parkview Community Hospital Advisory Board. Fleming was also appointed to the In-Home Support Services Advisory Board by the Riverside County Board of Supervisors. Fleming’s goals as mayor include what she has identified as three pressing local issues; they are—developing a healthy, robust local economy; safe streets; and encouraging community spirit. Fleming’s vision for Moreno Valley can be further explored on her campaign website where she states, “It's time to build up our city with good governance, traditional city values, and form partnerships with our local school districts.” And added, “It's time to develop more relationships with our sister cities and start our own local programs, festivals, events and activities.” This will be the first year that voters in Moreno Valley will elect a citywide mayor— mayors were formerly appointed annually by the city council. Every Moreno Valley voter will be eligible to cast a vote for the mayoral candidate of their choice regardless of where they or the candidate live in the city. The mayor presides over city council meetings, officiates at public events, signs documents approved by the city council and acts and votes as a member of the council. In addition, the mayor makes all appointments to boards, commissions and committees (unless otherwise specified by law) subject to approval by the city council. A Call to Action for Voting Rights Washington D.C.
I
n 2013 the United States Supreme Court dealt a devastating blow to the 1964 Voting Rights Act. The ruling was a green light to legislators and governors in Republican led states around the nation who almost immediately began passing a slate of initiatives they described as protections against voter fraud but were in reality a thinly veiled excuse for disenfranchising hundreds of thousands of vulnerable voters that included minorities, students and the elderly—the very people the 1964 Voting Rights Act was designed to protect. Until the Supreme Court ruling, the 1964 Voting Rights Act had curbed such race-based voter discrimination and helped guarantee all Americans the equal right to vote. In recent weeks, courts have struck down several such Republican initiated laws that
impinged on voting rights in five states, North Carolina, Wisconsin, Kansas, North Dakota, and Texas. Certainly, these rulings are major victories for voting rights advocates; however, there is still much work to do. Voting restrictions remain in place in at least twelve other states. In the meantime, the United States Congress has failed to act on proposed, bi-partisan voting rights legislation, the Voting Rights Advancement Act. The law would purportedly repair much of the damage inflicted on voting rights by the 2013 Supreme Court decision. On July 23, the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights wrote to Senator Charles Grassley, Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, regarding the pending voting rights legislation. The letter opened as follows, “Just months before the first presidential election
in 50 years without the full protections of the Voting Rights Act (VRA), we write to express our frustration that a bill to help restore the law continues to languish in the committee you chair. More than three years since the U.S. Supreme Court’s devastating Shelby County v. Holder decision, voters across the country desperately need Congress to take action to protect their rights.” The bill has languished in Grassley’s committee for more than a year. The letter urged him to reconsider his position and hold a hearing. It ended with the following admonishment, “Your failure to do this would be a disappointing abdication of your responsibility to Congress and to the nation.”

Loretta Sanchez Receives Republican Support for Senate Bid Orange County
A
nother Republican has announced his support for California Senate candidate Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez. Sanchez has struggled to keep pace in her senate race against California State Attorney General Kamala Harris. Harris recently received endorsements from both President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden, now, Sanchez has secured the endorsement of former Republican Representative Howard "Buck" McKeon of Santa Clarita. McKeon, a former Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, cited Sanchez’s
expertise on military and national defense issues as the foundation for his support. He praised her work to protect American troops and their families—Sanchez serves on both the Armed Services and Homeland Security committees. McKeon served in Congress for more than twenty years but decided not to seek reelection in 2014. In a statement released by the Sanchez campaign, McKeon praised Sanchez for her efforts to protect American troops and their families. “I have worked closely with Loretta for many years and have seen firsthand her ability to put partisanship aside and work with Democrats and Republicans to help move policies forward that better protect our troops and the homeland,” he explained.

CaSonya Thomas to Lead Human Services Department San Bernardino
L
ast week the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors tapped long time county executive CaSonya Thomas to lead the Human Services Department. Thomas, who will succeed the retiring Linda Haugan, has met the social service and mental health needs of San Bernardino County residents for more than 25 years. She currently serves as the county’s Director of Behavioral Health. “It is an honor to receive this appointment, which comes with a tremendous responsibility to the people of San Bernardino County,” Thomas said. “Each day, Human Services changes lives through a number of programs and services, and we will remain committed to our Countywide Vision to build healthier communities by strengthening individuals and families, enhancing quality of life and valuing people.” Thomas is assuming an awesome responsibility. Human Services includes eight departments, more than 6,000 employees, and an annual budget of $1.9 billion. Thomas began her career in 1991 as an eligibility worker, an entry level position in what is now the
Transitional Assistance Department. Over the course of her 25-year county career, she has held a number of executive and management positions within Human Services including Director of Behavioral Health. Under her leadership, Behavioral Health played a key role in the county’s efforts to assist the survivors of the Dec. 2, 2015 terrorist attack in San Bernardino and the families of those who died. “CaSonya Thomas is an outstanding employee and an asset to the county,” said Board of Supervisors Chairman and Third District Supervisor James Ramos. “As the newly appointed Assistant Executive Officer for Human Services, Ms. Thomas will bring professionalism and expertise that will continue to strengthen the County of San Bernardino.” Vice Chairman and First District Supervisor Robert Lovingood said, “CaSonya has proven herself as a successful and well-qualified leader for this position. Her experience, hard work and professionalism will serve our residents and the County well.”

Sanchez said she was honored to have McKeon’s endorsement. "My 20 years of national security experience speaks to my capacity to be ready to work on day-one,” she asserted. This is the second endorsement Sanchez has received from a prominent California Republican. She was previously endorsed by former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan. She also has the support of Republican political consultant Dave Gilliard. However, despite these and other endorsements, Sanchez still faces an uphill battle in her efforts to defeat Democratic Party frontrunner, Kamala Harris, for the seat being vacated by long time California Senator Barbara Boxer.

Years and Counting
S. E. Williams Contributor or forty-four years The Voice/Black Voice News has worked to expand its sphere of influence while at the same time remained true to its core values of advocacy journalism in a way that informs, inspires and engages communities in the inland region. The newspaper’s publishers and staff have strived to fulfill the challenge dispensed centuries ago by leading author, printer, political theorist, politician, scientist, civic activist, statesman, and diplomat Benjamin Franklin who said, “Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing.” For fortyfour years, the publication has strived and succeeded

What the Black press offers is a historica and a catalyst for change. It can empowe powers that be to move in a positive direc
at doing both. In 1980, the Brown Family, led by Hardy and Cheryl Brown, assumed ownership of the paper after the founder UCR student Artis Lilly transferred ownership to community newspaperman Sam Martin. Right away they transitioned the publication to more closely align with their vision. “We changed the focus and how it was delivered,” Mr. Brown shared during an interview on the paper’s 43rd anniversary. “We made it attractive to read.” Making the paper attractive to read was just the first step in a long journey that has established it as a strong voice for justice in the inland region; yielded numerous awards for reporting, editorials and artistic presentation; and built an expanded, electronic footprint across various segments of new media—all while remaining true to its core constituency. In the years since 1980, the Browns have taken what started as a small community newspaper and with determination, credibility, guidance and wisdom built a dynasty, now nurtured across its various entities to even higher ground by the next generation of Browns.
Under the stewardship of Paulette Brown-Hinds, The Black Voice News has extended its reach and expanded its vision beyond the boundaries of the Inland Empire through Voice Media Ventures, the new parent company of Black Voice News, The IE Voice, Hindsight Productions, BPC Mediaworks, and serving as the administrator for Black Voice Foundation. Business Development and Digital Director Patrick Edgett joined the team in June 2015, and has focused on business development and technology projects with the goal of also increasing revenue from digital ventures. According to Edgett, “The main source of revenue before we diversified was advertising, which is much lower online than it is with print. Where you might charge $2,000 for placement in a paper, the same number of views online might only generate $200,” he explained. “And so, not only do you have to build a platform that you can monetize, but you have to increase your audience exponentially…which is possible, but not overnight.” Part of the business expansion effort involved its transition to a new era of diversification that includes the establishment of partnerships. “One of the ways to increase our audience is to build partnerships with industry experts and thought leaders,” Edgett stressed.

“One of the partnerships we are happy to announce is with the African American Civic Engagement Project (AACEP). Based in Los Angeles, the AACEP is dedicated to understanding African American and urban voters' behavior and increasing their civic engagement through education and electoral participation. The Black Voice News, as a California-focused digital platform, allows us to use our expertise to create different types of content, videos, illustrations, etc., that will help inspire the African American community to increase their civic engagement.” Another example, is the The IE Voice’s partnership with a national digital company that has created a new advertisement platform for local small businesses and community based organizations, Edgett explained, “It will help our advertisers gain traction not only through their specific ad, but by also by increasing their Google ranking.” According to Edgett, Voice Media Ventures is bringing many of the family’s creative projects under one moniker and is also investing in creative projects of all types of media. “One of our first two major investments was in blackvoicenews.com and revamping its digital platform. The other is in the film, My Name is Myeisha via Hindsight Productions. We
are excited that it is was created by a local team and will be shot locally as well.” The dramatic production company, Hindsight Productions, under the creative vision and stewardship of Rickerby M. Hinds, has experienced an extraordinarily successful year that will culminate in the production the movie My Name is Myeisha. The movie adapted by Rickerby Hinds and Gus Krieger who is also the director, is currently in pre-production and is set to begin shooting in October in the Inland Empire. The play, written in 2005 based on the shooting of Tyisha Miller in 1998 by Riverside police officers, continues to be extremely relevant in light of recent events between the police and the Black community. “Dreamscape has been on tour for the past five years throughout the United States as well as Europe (Hungary, Romania, Turkey), with a return to Poland this past June at the invitation of MESEA (The Society for Multi-Ethnic Studies: Europe and the Americas),” Hinds shared. Also according to Hinds, “The role of the Black Voice News in the development of

Dreamscape as well as My Name is Myeisha cannot be understated. It was only because of the insistence of former publishers Hardy and Cheryl Brown in writing about the shooting on a weekly basis that the incident became a national story.” He continued, “The subsequent protests placed the focus of the nation on Riverside and the Inland Empire. This led to the formation of a citizens’ oversight committee, the Riverside Coalition for Police Accountability, which has been a significant step in bettering the relationship between the police and Black community.” Hindsight Productions also saw the beginning of its Arts in the Schools initiative in conjuction with Black Voice Foundation. “Los Angeles Unified School District’s Dorsey High School was the site where John “Faahz” Merchant worked as an official Community Arts Partner (CAP) introducing students to Hip-Hop Theater for the second half of the academic year,” Hinds explained. “Due to the success of the program at Dorsey High, we have been selected to continue as a partner for the upcoming academic year with the possibility of making the Hip-Hop Theater program an ongoing part of the Los Angeles Unified School District.” This year also saw Hinds become a Fulbright Scholar to Honduras, his country of birth. He has spent the last three months in the capital, Tegucigalpa, at the campus of the National University, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras (UNAH), working with faculty members and students toward the establishment of a stronger relationship between the UNAH and UC Riverside as well as the two countries through the arts. An agreement between the two universities’ student as well as faculty exchanges will be possible with the goal of strengthening both institutions through these efforts. Hinds’ Fulbright activities will culminate in a Honduran tour of both the original as well as a bilingual version of Dreamscape in August. The cast will be made up of an actress from Honduras - Jesse Sandoval Hernandez and John “Faahz” Merchant—the hope is to bring the tour to the United States in 2017.
In general, educational outreach is facilitated through Black Voice Foundation. Over eight years ago, Hardy Brown II assumed stewardship of the Black Voice Foundation, an outgrowth of Hardy and Cheryl Brown’s break-through outreach efforts to educate students and others about the careers available in print media and educate the community on African-American culture and history. It is one of a very few organizations in the inland region that offer services across both Riverside and San Bernardino school districts. Since taking the helm, Brown II has redesigned and implemented a new model for school outreach. In addition to providing a great service to the schools, his efforts have truly strengthened the reputation of the Foundation as a professional development organization. This is partly attributed to the Foundation’s engagement of parents and its demonstrated commitment to the professional development of educators. Each year the Foundation facilitates Footsteps to Freedom, a week-long experiential learning program rooted in the undergroundrailroad experience. The Foundation is currently working with some of the one thousand educators who participated in the tour over its twenty-year history to define the most effective way to translate that powerful experience to the classroom. The Foundation has also been highly lauded for its Black History Exhibits. Each year, it displays the exhibit in public and charter classrooms, at museums, community colleges, universities and the state capital. The Foundation’s collection consists of over 2000 artifacts donated over the years and includes items from West Africa, Ebony and Jet magazines from the Civil Rights era, newspapers from the Reconstruction era, among other items. At its core, the Foundation has a deep commitment to history, education and the arts. From the beginning Hardy and Cheryl Brown understood the important role played by the Black media and never shied away for their ability to make a difference. One of the most impactful ways their influence has extended far beyond the boundaries of the Inland Empire is
through the nonprofit entity, California Black Media (CBM). Since its inception, CBM has met with several governors, state legislators, mayors and state leaders on issues that concern AfricanAmericans across California. Regina Brown Wilson took the helm of CBM in 2013 and has expanded the organization’s efforts in news reporting on statewide policy issues that impact African-American communities. The goal is to arm Black communities with information that allow them to act and help shape the policies that govern their lives, Wilson explained. “It’s complex and seems time intensive but it’s my hope that CBM is able to help our communities have unbiased information that allows them to discuss how issues impact them from multiple angles helping to lead to more inclusive public policy creation.” Back in the Inland region, the influence The IE Voice will have in terms of educating and influencing public opinion in the coming years is expected to continue and expand. “Dr. Paulette Brown-Hinds’ weekly column, Rants and Raves, provides a great glimpse into some of the work we are doing to help form public policy in the region,” Edgett advised. “With the column as a starting point, reaching so many in the region, I see us playing an increased role in economic development and education policy in the region.” In addition to the continued development of relationships within the region, Edgett expressed his confidence they will continue to expand and develop relationships outside the region as well. “Our strategic communications firm BPC Mediaworks, for instance, was instrumental in educating urban communities throughout Southern California and the Central Valley on the state’s new earned income tax credit earlier this year and we continue to assist the League of California Cities with its diversity caucus statewide,” he explained. At Forty-four, The Black Voice News through its parent company Voice Media Ventures, continues to break new ground while staying true to its mission to educate, inform, and inspire social change.
