ast Friday San Bernardino made the national news when a police officer was critically shot after he and his partner encountered a group of people in front of a residence during the early morning hours. One of the men in the group reportedly shot Officer Gabriel Garcia in the head and torso before being fatally shot by Officer Garcia’s partner, an unnamed trainee. The officer was placed in an induced coma and has responded well to treatment. Friday night was the first of many candlelight vigils held in support of the injured officer and his family. That same night, I was fortunate to be at quite a different type of event in San Bernardino. No, it didn’t make the national news, or even the regional news, but it should have. It was one of those community events that unfortunately go unnoticed to the community at large. It celebrated the best in our community, those individuals and organizations that make our cities safer, smarter, and more culturally and socially enriched. The dinner lasted a little over two hours but the achievements celebrated were enough to fill ten lifetimes. The event, the Legacy of Exemplary Service Gala, was hosted by Libreria Del Pueblo and honored some of the most charitable and committed individuals in our community: Deacon Joe Acosta, Lucia Negrete, Felix Diaz, Gloria Zometa, Anthony Bocanegra, Consulate General of Mexico Carolina Zaragoza Flores, former San Bernardino Mayor Pat Morris, and my dad Hardy Brown. Martin Valdez, the current president of the organization, said that the common thread that weaves the honorees together is their love for their neighbor, their service to others, and their altruistic nature. Honoree Gloria Zometa, also one of the organization’s founders, is an excellent example of someone who expresses that love, compassion, and community advocacy. Born in El Salvador, as a college student Gloria was involved in organizing students advocating social justice when civil war broke out in that country. Gloria was forced to escape or possibly face death if she stayed. Once she arrived in San Bernardino she worked organizing young women while employed by the Catholic Diocese. In association with Father Patrick Guillen and Sister Rosa Martha, Gloria founded Libreria Del Pueblo almost 30 years ago with a mission to assist immigrant families by providing social, health, and citizenship services. For three decades the organization has quietly gone about its work sowing seeds of life and hope for some of the poorest and neediest of those in the community: victims of domestic violence, farm workers, undocumented individuals and juveniles. Gloria believes that it is important for the disenfranchised and poor to develop leadership skills so that they can improve their own future. In that regard, the organization focuses on self-empowerment through education and information. The concept was not to provide assistance but to develop leadership so the community can develop their own resources. Last Friday evening was the organization’s annual event to remind the community of that mission as well as to honor other individuals who believe serving others is not a sacrifice, it is a mandate. 2nd Annual African-American Family Reunion Held in Moreno Valley Moreno Valley

T

he African American Coalition hosted the 2nd Annual African American Family Reunion at Celebration Park in Moreno Valley, CA on Saturday, August 23, 2014. “More than 400 people and over 30 vendors came together to educate, empower and impact our communities” said Dr. Denise Fleming. “The event is a total success. There is plenty of food, music and entertainment for the day. We are powerful when we come together in one voice. The purpose of the coalition is to educate and encourage all cultures in our communities to get out and vote (GOTV). We want to know who and what we are voting for and be cognizant of the legislation that is introduced in Washington and Sacramento that affects us all. We also want to encourage parents to be involved in their children’s education, be active members in their local schools and prepare their children not only for the K-12 common core curriculum but for college. In addition, there are many resources that are available locally but residents don’t utilize them because of lack of knowledge. The coalition exist to ensure that the African American

A

group of 16 Cal State San Bernardino students returned from a week-long volunteer service trip to Alaska with renewed inspiration and commitment to serve in their own Inland Empire communities. CSUSB’s Alternative Break Program provides a unique opportunity for students to participate in an intensive public service experience while increasing their understanding of significant social and environmental problems. Engaged in direct service related to these problems, students live and work in communities with which they otherwise

would have little contact. The program’s main goal is to expose and educate participants about the root causes of community issues, while also making an immediate difference in the excursion’s respective communities. “Going on the service trip to Alaska was such an enriching experience,” said Janelle Doyle, a CSUSB second-year biology major and President’s Academic Excellence Scholar. “One second we’d be floating on our backs down a canyon river, the next we’d be putting up the walls on a house for a

family who needed it. “Then we’d be off to a museum, sea life center, or research facility to learn about Alaskan native heritage, and how hard Alaskans work to preserve culture and marine life,” said the San Bernardino resident. “There was never a single moment where I didn’t feel like I was gaining a new appreciation for something and how just a few hours of volunteer work can go a very long way,” Doyle said. Bryant Fairley, associate director of CSUSB’s office of Community Engagement said that the

immersion experience could serve as a springboard for a lifelong commitment to social change. “We chose Alaska for the service trip because we wanted to remove students from their comfort zone and expose them to new environments and cultures,” said Fairley. The service projects included three days in Anchorage serving food to the hungry at Bean’s Café, and exploring and preserving cultural artifacts at the Alaska Native Heritage Center; two days in Homer assisting researchers at the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies with data collection on marine debris and human impacts. Other projects included making clay kits for the education and outreach department at the Alaska SeaLife Center in Seward, and build a rural home with Habitat for Humanity in Kenai. But the students also balanced their service work with fun, recreational activities, including kayaking at Peterson Bay, cycling the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, whitewater rafting, a dinner cruise to Bear Glacier and a hike to Table Top Mountain. The 16 students were hosted by two CSUSB alums, Alex Weis (B.A. political science, 2012) and former Coyote soccer player Chelsey (Jones) Weis (B.A. liberal studies, 2014), now married and living in Anchorage. The students were: Undergraduates Jesy Amaro, communications; Marlyn Amaro, liberal studies; Carley Bennecke, theater; Estefany Cobian, psychology; Alexandria Crespo, math; Brandon Dover, graphic design; Janelle Doyle, biology; America Farias, biology pre-med; Alex Gordon, business; Felipe Jimenez, accounting; Donal Martinez, criminal justice; Alexis Rascon, economics; Edith Soto, marketing; Sierra White, studio art. Graduate students David Dysart, industrial/org psychology; and Kennedy Van Houten, special education. Preparation for their service trip included obtaining background and cultural information about the service sites. In addition, the students volunteered locally at the Helping Hands Pantry in San Bernardino as an introductory team service experience. After returning to campus, students worked together to educate the campus about their service experience and the importance of community engagement. In addition to Fairley, accompanying the group were CSUSB leaders Shannon Stratton, executive director, Associated Students Inc.; Mark Oswood, outdoor programs coordinator, Recreational Sports; and Natalie Cleary, assistant director of Student Leadership and Development. “This was an amazing experience for our students to celebrate the unique beauty of Alaska while also discovering many similarities between Alaska and the Inland Empire,” said Fairley. “From devastating wildfires, earthquake preparedness, poverty and the higher rates of unemployment, our students answered the call to serve and returned with a renewed perspective of the beauty within the Inland Empire and an increased commitment to serve and leave their paw print on our campus and their local community.” For more information about CSUSB’s Alternative Break Program, please contact Bryant Fairley at (909) 537-7347 or bfairley@csusb. edu.

inthenews Fall Term Starts at San Bernardino Valley College San Bernardino

S

an Bernardino Valley College started its Fall 2014 semester on Tuesday, August 19th. While a final official count of students will not be known for several weeks yet, over 12,000 students have enrolled for one or more classes so far, and late enrollments are expected to push that higher. This total compares with the official final tally of 11,752 for the fall term 2013. Students now have a total of 14 associate degrees for transfer from which to choose as majors. These degrees include a lineup of courses that have already been approved for transfer credit to the CSU system. Assuming that a student is admitted to the CSU, she will get credit for all her courses completed satisfactorily at SBVC. In a presentation to faculty and staff on Monday, the day before classes started, Interim President Dr. Gloria Fisher pointed out that over 500 students successfully transferred to CSU universities from the class of 2013, a significant increase from the average of around 330 of the past several years. As has been the case for the past 13 years, students will need to cope with fenced-off areas of the campus where new construction is now underway. Work has begun on a multimilliondollar athletics complex, along with improvements to the athletic fields and grandstands. The existing gyms remain open for use and will not be demolished until the new gyms are open, which is expected in 2016. After a year of being closed for renovations, the campus’s landmark Auditorium, which originally opened in 1937, has now reopened. The facility has been extensively renovated and brought up to code to meet the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The Auditorium will be the venue for an August 28th early evening FREE jazz concert by renowned flautist Galen AbdurRazzzaq. Details can be found on the college website at www.valleycollege.edu. Call Greg Zerovnik at 909-384-8978 for more information.

healthyliving with Dr. Ernest Levister Overweight vs. Obese Dear Dr. Levister: I am an African American female, young, healthy and slightly overweight. My mother and older sisters are massively obese and generally unhealthy. What are my chances of becoming obese? V.C. Dear V.C.: The obesity rate is high in the African American community. African-American women have the highest rates of overweight and obesity compared to other groups in the United States. About 4 in 5 African-American women are overweight or obese. Being overweight or obese increases your risk of: heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure, stroke, breathing problems, arthritis, gallbladder disease, sleep apnea and some cancers. Obesity or overweight is measured with a body mass index (BMI). The taller you are, the more weight you can carry. And shorter people cannot carry as much weight. So, the BMI shows the relationship of weight to height. For instance, if you are 5 feet 4 inches tall and weigh 145 pounds, your BMI is 25. But if you are 5 feet 4 inches tall and weigh 174 pounds, your BMI is 30. Women with a BMI of 25 to 29.9 are considered overweight. Women with a BMI of 30 or more are considered obese. All people 18 years or older, Family Reunion, continued from page 4

culture and others are educated, empowered and impacting their communities by making a difference to be successful in their future and the future of their children” stated Dr. Fleming, Vice President of Moreno Valley Unified School Board and Director of the Coalition. The coalition consists of many different organizations, entrepreneurs, community leaders and residents working together in one voice. We meet monthly on the first Sunday at 3pm to plan, analyze and strategize events for the whole year. We have been successful in giving out Scholarships, Mental Health Workshops, Drug and Alcohol Classes for Parents, Community Town hall meetings, Computer Classes for Parents, as Student Mentors and many other events. All services are offered free just as today’s event.

who have a BMI of 25 or more, are at risk of early death and disability from being overweight or obese. These health risks increase as the BMI rises. If you are overweight or obese, losing weight can lower your risk of many health problems. And physical activity is one key part of weight loss and keeping a healthy weight. Health benefits are gained by doing aerobic activity that includes: 2 hours and 30 minutes of moderateintensity aerobic activity or 1 hour and 15 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity or a combination of moderate and vigorous aerobic activity and muscle-strengthening activities on two or more days of the week This physical activity should be in addition to your routine activities of daily living, such as cleaning or spending a few minutes walking from the parking lot to your office. If weight loss is your goal, you may need to spend more time doing aerobic activity to see the effects. Eating healthy meals that focus on portion control also plays a role in weight loss and keeping a healthy weight. If you need to lose weight, ask your doctor to help you with a weightloss plan that includes healthy meal planning and physical activity. At one point, the event became emotional as the President of the NAACP, Woodie RuckerHughes, spoke of the present actions in Ferguson Missouri. She led a unity tribute “to our brothers and sisters in Ferguson, MO. On the count of three we will all lift our hands and shout “Hands Up, Don’t Shoot” as a tribute to those struggling with the recent tragedy in Ferguson and to the parents that are burying their son today’ said Ms. Hughes. Senator Richard Roth, District SD 31, opened the festivities and encouraged everyone to get involved in the day’s activities. Congressman Takano, U.S. Representative 41st District, and Dr. Judy White, Superintendent Moreno Valley Unified School District spoke and enjoyed the activities of the day. Cleveland Johnson and Jesus Holguin, Moreno Valley School Board Trustees, and Moreno Valley City Councilmember

George Price were also on hand. Pastor Weber, of Living Way Christian Fellowship gave a spoken word and Pastor Sykes of Crossword Church also greeted and encouraged all.

inmyopinion Father-to-Father: A Message of Faith

A

citizen using an AK47 automatic rifle in one hand and a handgun in the other gunned down San Bernardino Police Officer Gabriel Garcia last week. It was an attempted killing of a peace officer that had not done anything to Hardy L. Brown provoke a reaction of any kind from anyone. Officer Garcia and his trainee were patrolling on Garner Street around 2:30 a.m. when they observed a few citizens walking down the street. The officers exited their car to question the citizens, when one opened fire with an AK47. Officer Garcia was hit seven times while his trainee was able to shoot and kill the shooter. Now Officer Garcia lay at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in a medically induced coma fighting for his life. I do not know the officer but I do know about medically induced comas because our son was in one for over 16 days after breaking his femur bone. I bring that up to witness to his father and the San Bernardino community that all is not lost by such medical care. And, to say hold on to your faith while the community keeps praying for his recovery. I was asked during those 16 days how could I be calm and not worry over my only son. Without

thinking, the story of Abraham and Isaac popped out of my mouth where he was to sacrifice his son. It gave me great comfort to know that God had placed him in my care for those years and if it was His will to spare him, I would be grateful. Many things happen in our lives that we will never understand such as this. Why would a police officer just doing his job obeying good police protocol deserve such treatment? I have asked this question many times in my life and did the same for your son. Again I went to the scriptures Proverbs 3:5-6 and found out I should “Trust in the Lord with all

thy heart and mind and lean not unto my own understanding.” I did not get my answer to that question almost 20 years ago regarding my son until he was being removed from his coma. As I picked up my bible to read my son’s favorite scripture, the bible fell open to the book of John Chapter 11 verse 4 where Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, It is for God’s glory, so that God’s son may be glorified through it.” I called my wife and told her this experience was about getting people to look to Jesus for their solutions to their problems and situations. Mind you I have taught bible classes for over 40 years at St. Paul AME in San Bernardino and Delmann Heights Foursquare Gospel Church. I had read and told my biblical stories while experiencing a few but nothing like having your flesh and blood laying there in a coma and nothing you can do but pray and wait on God. I want you to know that my family is praying for you, your son, and all the people who put their lives in jeopardy so others might enjoy safe communities. We also pray that God will provide us the peace in our country from all of the violence that comes from people who want to take another person’s life. I know that God has a bigger picture in store for all of us and your son is included in that picture. Center: Photo of slain San Bernardino police officer Gabriel Garcia.

pointofview Letter To The Editor: “How Long, Not Long”

T

his 81 year-old writer asks, “How long will the slaughter of African American males continue?” In my lifetime, Black males have been tortured, executed, and hung from trees. This writer witnessed our family cotton gin and general store burned to the ground, twice, by racists. Today, horses have been replaced with cars; and sticks and ropes traded for guns. In Fruitland Park, Florida, sheets of a notorious hate group were traded for law enforcement uniforms. On behalf of Dan’te Parker, Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin, Donte Jordan, and others, in the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., I ask “How long?” Through the years the south was infamous for racial hatred and abominable acts, however, now barbaric activities against Blacks take place nationwide. Weekly, in California, Missouri, Alabama, Illinois, Ohio, all across the nation, a Black mother’s son dies at the hands of professed law enforcement personnel who are sworn to protect, not to kill our citizens. Black men have been shot in the back; shot in the top of the head; choked, and electrocuted to death by law enforcement officers. How long before these atrocities are stopped? Dan’te, a hard-working, good natured, father of five children, who loved to sing, left home in Victorville, California riding his son’s mongoose bike because Dante’s bike had a flat tire. He was exercising to lose weight. Dante was stopped at approximately 5 p.m. by a Deputy Sheriff because

of a reported attempted break-in at a residence. The resident, reporting the incident, said the suspect left riding a bicycle. ‘A Black man on a bike’ was stopped by a law enforcement officer, stunned by a Taser “multiple times”, “more than five times”, was dead by 6 p.m., and his family never notified. Why? How Long? By 11, when her husband had not returned home, a concerned, alarmed, wife began phone calls only to be informed that her husband was at a medical facility. Accompanied by her father-inlaw, the wife went to the facility, was questioned by detectives, and after several hours of waiting, when she asked to see her husband, was informed that her husband’s body had been transported from Victorville, in San Bernardino County, to Riverside County. The family was never notified. Reportedly, Dante’s six year old son asks every morning, “Why all black men have to die?” This writer asks, “How Long?” The eleventh edition of Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary defines genocide as: “The deliberate and systematic destruction of a racial, political, or cultural group.” How long will this seemingly open season on Black males continue? From the cradle, through the prison, to the grave, seems to be the designated channel for too many Black males in our society. Blacks do not own the airplanes and ships that bring drugs to the neighborhood, nor do we manipulate the systems that eliminate jobs. However, there is always an ample supply

of drugs and gangs on the street corners. Seemingly, there are those who destine Black youth to go from the schoolhouse to the courthouse to the jailhouse, so that they have no opportunities to be in their own house. How long will we tolerate this systematic demise of a people? The outrage crosses racial, generational, gender, and all barriers. A 90 year old Caucasian female survivor of the Holocaust was arrested in Ferguson, Missouri as she marched for transparency and justice. We send Black males around the world to protect the very hands which needlessly kill them in their own country. How long will this continue? How long will culturally uneducated politicians refuse to listen to those who have “boots on the ground” in the Black communities and culture? This “open season” and massacre of Black males must end. How long? I hope not long because we can wait no longer for accountability and an end to the genocide.

featurestory

EDITOR’S NOTE: The following is a first-person narrative used to highlight the recent discourse surrounding use of police force after of the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo. The brief stories that follow this narrative recounting policeinvolved shootings is intended to underscore the scope and span of this issue.

I

can’t shake memories of Trayvon Martin. How can we forget Trayvon? Repeatedly, he has been considered the Emmett Till of my generation. He’s the boy that President Obama said could have been his son – and later clarified as a boy that could have been him. Obama’s honesty and introspection is one that I had to mirror. The truth is I could have been Trayvon, and now I realize I could have been Michael Brown – two young black men with very different lives and very different paths and one common denominator. Although Trayvon wasn’t killed by a police officer, the implications of authority and the

perception of skewed justice make it difficult to not also recall Michael Brown. As an adult looking back, especially as a black man, I know how easy it is for any teenager’s innocence to be tarnished because of mistakes we make on our path to adulthood. After the death of Trayvon and Michael, critics pounced on them both, casting them in a negative light when neither of the two are here to defend themselves. Scrutiny of our justice system and law enforcement was averted by many – not just among conservative media. Before either could be buried, character assassination ensued without question of what appropriate force should look like. Growing up, I never deviated far from the “right” path. I was always self-aware and reticent with trouble, especially pertaining to the law, but I was never immune from the type of fateful encounter with a police officer that could have gone awry. I could have been that victim. I could have been painted in a negative light too. I didn’t tote guns or use drugs, but maybe I wasn’t as “cooperative” with

an officer as I should have been. Maybe I was breaking my curfew again. Maybe I was defiant toward my parents – the norm for a teenager of any background. All of these things in our world of 5-second sound bites and news montages would earn me a reputation as difficult or troubled teen that maybe could have avoided (necessary) excessive force. Unfortunately, we live in a world where authority figures are granted more leniency and credibility than the young minorities who die in officer-involved shootings. It is beyond my comprehension why tragedies similar to Michael Brown’s story unfold when past lessons should have been learned. The following are cases from the not-so-distant past – reminders that stories similar to Michael Brown have happened in our own backyards. Tyisha Miller | RIVERSIDE COUNTY The fatal shooting of Tyisha Miller was one of the most notable cases involving police officers from Riverside Police Department. Miller’s death

Miller was 19-years-old when she was shot by four police officers while sitting in a parked car with a gun in her lap. Miller had allegedly sat up while in the car with the gun in her lap, which prompted officers to react. According to reports, of the four officers involved, three were white and one was Hispanic. The officers involved were not prosecuted, which touched off a fire storm of criticism and demonstrations from protesters, including Jesse Jackson and Rev. Al Sharpton. The Federal Bureau of Investigators (FBI) and former state Attorney General Bill Lockyer launched

investigations into the case. Charges were never brought against the officers involved, but the community became more involved in communicating with Riverside Police Department. Miller’s death remains etched in the memory of the Riverside community and was the central theme of “Dreamscape”, an internationally-toured play authored and directed by Rickerby Hinds, a professor at University of California, Riverside (UCR). Kendrec McDade | LOS ANGELES COUNTY On March 24, 2012, not long after Trayvon Martin was killed, Kendrec McDade was fatally shot by two Pasadena police officers after he and another teenager allegedly fled from police through the streets of Pasadena. Officers pursued the two teenagers after it was falsely reported to 911 that two men with guns stole a computer from a man’s car. According to reports, officers fired shots at McDade because they believed he was reaching for a weapon. The case was widelycriticized for having a racial undertone. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office cleared the officers involved of criminal wrongdoing. The 911 caller, identified

as Oscar Carillo, plead guilty to misdemeanor charges of filing a false report and sentenced to 90 days in jail. In June, it was reported that the city of Pasadena reached a $1 million settlement with the family of McDade. Manuel Diaz | ORANGE COUNTY Manuel Diaz was reportedly unarmed when he was fatally shot by an Anaheim police officer after he fled from police. Police allegedly stated that Diaz was a known gang member. Local residents from the mostly Hispanic neighborhood were outraged by the shooting death of Diaz, eventually touching off a violent protest and demonstrations. The protests inflamed with some protestors allegedly throwing objects at police, nearly sparking a riot. Following a string of officer-involved shootings in the city, the mayor asked the state Attorney General and U.S. Attorney’s office to conduct an independent investigation. In March, a federal jury concluded that the fatal shooting of Diaz was not an excessive use of force. Corey Arvin is a contributor to VOICE and editor of Black Voice News

In Memoriam Media Mogul Bill Anthony

V

isionary local publisher and media owner Bill Anthony died August 12, 2014 from complications of respiratory failure. Anthony was best known as the publisher of the Inland Empire Business Journal (IEBJ) for the past 25 Years. Bill’s health had been declining suffering from kidney failure three years ago. However, he kept diligently working and those who knew him said he never lost the passion to make the Journal each month. Bill’s memorial service will be held on September 12, 2014 at The Crossing, The Loft Building, 2115 Newport Boulevard, Costa Mesa, CA 92627 at 1:00 p.m. Those who wish to attend are advised to park in the parking structure. In lieu of flowers, please donate to The Trellis-Homeless Project at 303 23rd Street, Costa Mesa, CA 92627. Bill is survived by his wife, Ingrid, his two daughters, Christine and Joann, sons-in-laws, David and Todd and four grandchildren. Along with his wife, Ingrid Anthony, Bill founded the Inland Empire Business Journal in 1989 as a monthly magazine exclusively covering business news in the Inland Empire (San Bernardino and Riverside counties). It was the first such publication in the region and an indication of the massive economic growth the two counties would soon see. Associates say Anthony was always quick to point out how crazy everyone thought he was when he began the Journal. At the 2012 ceremony

when Cal State San Bernardino’s library archived every issue of The IEBJ, Bill explained, “Back when Ingrid and I started in 1989, everyone told me, ‘Bill, there isn’t any business in the Inland Empire except dairy farms and military bases.’ But we ignored them and saw the banks and developers investing in this area and knew it was only a matter of time before the region took off.” The first issue of the Inland Empire Business Journal was published on April 17, 1989 and featured an article that predicted an upcoming economic recession. A recession hit the United States economy 15 months later. The first issue also began what became a hallmark feature of the IEBJ – lists. The first lists published were for the Largest Residential Real Estate Builders in the Inland Empire, as well as the largest HMO’s and PPO’s. The IEBJ would go on to publish an annual “Book of Lists”, which cataloged a vast amount of key business indicators and the companies behind them, from top employers to the largest hotels. PBS’ Hispanic Lifestyle TV show creator and producer Richard Sandoval, a former business editor with IEBJ, acknowledged the deep debt of gratitude that he and others feel toward Anthony for giving them their start in media. “I would not be in the business I am today without Bill Anthony,” Sandoval said. “He started many careers, including my own, and laid out the blueprint of how to run a regional media business. He also figured out how to create an audience where none existed prior. He was a true innovator, who did not copy others; but instead, succeeded by doing what no others had done before.” Anthony and his wife also began creating business conferences for working professionals shortly after creating the Journal. The most famous became the Women in Business Expo, which ran annually from 1990 to 2007. Other conferences included the Inland Empire Economic Forecast Conference and the Future 2000. In 1994, Bill began another enterprise that would be another first for the fast-growing Inland Empire region: it’s first TV newscast. The Inland Empire TV News (IETVN) was a daily 30-minute news program that first began airing on the local cable public service stations. Eventually, Anthony struck a deal to air the news on KPXN, channel 38, which would become part of the new Pax TV network. The show was run in standard local news format, with two anchors reading

headlines, and outside reporters producing field pieces, along with in-studio entertainment, sports and weather reports. IETVN ran until 2000, after NBC bought a 32% share in Pax TV and the network began running KNBC newscasts to fulfill its broadcast requirements for local programming. Emmy-winning reporter for KCBS/ KCAL and NBC4, and owner of Instantriverside.com, Craig Fiegener was the IETVN’s first News Director. “Bill’s vision was for hyper-local news before anyone understood that term,” remembered Fiegener. ” I remember on June 17, 1994 O.J. Simpson became a wanted fugitive, the world was watching his chase. Bill could have scrapped the newscast for that day, however he wasn’t fazed. We broadcast our local program that day as usual. I believe Bill’s vision grew out of a desire to end the thinking that the Inland Empire was second to Orange County or Los Angeles. For me that is one of his greatest legacies,” Anthony’s other ventures in TV included the PBS show Southern California Business Focus and the public affairs program Southern Exposure, along with Ontario In-Focus, a half hour weekly program produced for the city of Ontario. He was also the host of several business and leisure-themed radio programs, including Time Out, on AM1510 KSPA, as well as a connoisseur of fine wine who helped found and co-owned the New World International Wine Competition. Anthony received a number of awards and wore many hats over the years, including being involved with the Children’s Fund, Chaffey College Foundation, The A. Gary Anderson Graduate School of Management, Leukemia Society, California State University San Bernardino, The Unforgettables and many Inland Empire Chambers of Commerce. In October 2011, Anthony initiated an event called Community Cupid, which provided weddings for ten military couples returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Ingrid Anthony recalled, “This was quite an undertaking for him and the local community leaders he partnered with. It held very fond memories for him.” Bill was born in New York City on August 9, 1939 and moved to California in 1966. He lived in Huntington Beach for the past 43 years. Prior to founding the Journal, Anthony was a partner in a computer school and was involved in construction projects in the Orange County and Los Angeles area.
