ive days after an early morning fire destroyed most of the stuff inside our Riverside business office, I went shopping for a replacement mail basket. In part because with no physical office I had begun stacking our business mail onto the passenger’s seat of my car which was proving to be an unwise practice. But mostly because after losing all of my business stuff in the fire I was beginning to feel a bit melancholy. Two weeks earlier I had just finished decorating my office. In fact the French themed tote I had recently purchased would have been perfect for the mail task. But it was now unusable, like everything else housed under that roof. It was ruined, the victim of intense heat, smoke, and eventually water.

As I walked around the store’s huge mound of baskets looking for a replacement and growing more and more frustrated as I realized they no longer had that exact tote, I had to stop and remind myself that it was all just stuff… a basket, a desk, photos, computers and printers, art, books, just stuff.

It could be replaced. What really matters, I silently reflected, are people. The people we live with, work with, work for, and choose to spend time with, our community. That’s what really matters. From the moment we arrived at the fire scene I was reminded why I love living here. And the tragedy of losing all of our stuff in the fire proved to be the perfect opportunity to celebrate the caring people who make up our amazing community.

Amid the chaos of the scene that morning was investigator Shannon Smith and the rest of the Riverside Fire Department. They were calm and understanding and made the shock of the scene far less traumatic. I must publicly thank the young firefighter who heard our server still running after the electricity was cut, and secured it safely away from harm.

Councilman Mike Gardner was on the scene early Wednesday morning before 8:00 am. He not only offered assistance on behalf of the city, he handed me his cellphone external battery so I could continue to communicate from the parking lot. And he instantly had city staff send a list of possible temporary office spaces located in the downtown area.

Our insurance agent Scott Claus answered my 6:00 am phone call. I needed to know our insurance companies were going to be notified immediately. He is a third generation Farmer’s Insurance agent and has been the provider of choice for my family and our businesses for just as long.

The amazing team at Acorn Technology Corporation had our email up and running by midafternoon the day of the fire. Patrick Edgett and the Acorn team, led by CEO Don Dye, are allowing us to work remotely from our homes, coffee shops, or sandwich shops as if we are all still functioning in the same location.

Richard Nevins, our attorney, owns an office just two blocks away from ours and he offered his space as we worked to regroup the day of the fire.

Two days later we ran into Marlon Todd McClanahan at the downtown Riverside Starbucks while we worked to complete an important deadline. He immediately offered his office at Riverside County Fair Housing, which allowed us to print documents and think without the incessant sounds of the grinding of coffee beans and house music in the background.

Sandy Close of New America Media was the first to offer a contribution to an emergency fund to assist with the purchase of office supplies to allow us to continue running the business.

The team at San Dieguito Printing quickly re-routed the newspaper to another location so that our distribution team could do their deliveries as scheduled.

Knowing we have limited access to documents and no office furniture Terry Walling, owner of the Walling Building on University Avenue, has made the move to a temporary office space easy and effortless.

Finally, our team, namely Lee, Suzie, Natasha, Chris, Auvenida, Elliott, Corey, Hardy II, Art and Richard jumped-in and made sure we didn’t miss any deadlines, telephone calls, or emails.

We are thankful that no one was hurt in the blaze, just stuff lost. Stuff can easily be replaced.

People can’t.

Fontana’s new school board after recall

T

he citizens of Fontana just went through a recall of two school board members who they deemed not making policies in the best interest of children and taxpayers. It is my understanding the citizens expressed their satisfaction to the board and these members would not change their position so a recall petition was initiated and now there is a new board.

I want to introduce you to the new Fontana Unified School District, Board of Education: Henry (Gus) Hawthorn - President Mr. Hawthorn is Director of Engineering for a nearby manufacturing company. His job gives him the insight into ever changing technology and the skills students graduating from our high schools will need to be successful at work or in college. He supports curriculum with a real world connection and assessment programs that measure how effective the district’s efforts are in preparing our students for their future. Four years of leading Teen Parenting classes and three children of his own make him keenly aware of the demands on parents raising and educating kids in today’s society. His current term expires in 2014.

BarBara L. Chavez - Vice President Until her election to the Board of Education, Ms. Chavez was a Special Education Teacher’s Aide with the Fontana Unified School District for the past 21 years. She also served as President of the United Steelworkers Union, Local 8599, which represents the District’s classified employees, from 2003-06.

Ms. Chavez has been a long-time advocate for students, parents, and the Latino community. Her five children are all graduates of Fontana High School. Her current term expires in 2016.

Fontana to Host Congressional Field Hearing on Veterans Affairs Fontana

M

ayor Acquanetta Warren and the City Council recently announced that Congresswoman Gloria Negrete McLeod will hold a Veteran Affairs Field Hearing Wednesday, August 14, 2013 from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM at the City of Fontana Council Chambers.

“I am honored Congresswoman Negrete McLeod has selected Fontana to host such an important event. I applaud her efforts to assemble the key players to discuss the needs of our veterans. It is imperative as a nation we work together to understand the challenges facing the men and women who fought for our nation’s

freedom,” said Mayor Acquanetta Warren.

Last year, the Fontana City Council joined together with the non-profit organization, Veterans Partnering With Communities, Inc., to open the Fontana Veterans Resource Center.

This Center is a one-stop resource center for all veterans’ needs. The Center and its volunteers bring expertise on veterans’ benefits, health and wellness information, advocacy, referral services, employment and training, counseling, and veteran-owned and veteran-friendly businesses and hiring practices. “This field hearing will help keep us current on veterans’ needs and ensure

our resource center is up-to-date,” Mayor Warren added.

The field hearing will feature local, state and federal representatives, department of veteran affairs officials, as well as local agencies and organizations that provide veteran services.

he Hole In Wall Inc. (THIW), a not-for-profit organization of men and women joining forces to address the community need for social and economic empowerment will open their doors allowing for a drug-free, clean and safe 12-Step meeting facility in the Moreno Valley community where those in need can access information about housing, employment, healthcare, and educational services.

The official grand opening celebration event will take place today from 12:00pm to 2:00pm at 24187 Postal Avenue, Moreno Valley, CA 92553.

Expected to attend are the Mayor of Moreno Valley Tom Owens and Kim Carter, Executive Director of Time for Change Foundation.

The Hole In Wall Inc. is opening as an expansion for two new meeting places, which previously included the Moreno Valley Alano Club. This new location will provide a place where families and members of the community can participate in social events in a drug free and safe environment, seven days a week.

The Hole in Wall Inc. is happy to partner with the City of Moreno Valley as it addresses some of the most critical needs of the community in an effort to revitalize the economic development of the city.

“The THIW is definitely the answer to the city's issue of homelessness, poverty and high unemployment,” says Kim Carter, Executive Director of Time for Change Foundation based in San Bernardino County.

Additional phases of this project will include: adding a drop-in center and day care facility for the homeless and additional treatment services for those afflicted by drug abuse.

O

n a warm day, temperatures inside of a vehicle can quickly rise to dangerous levels. For example, on a day where the temperature is 80 degrees outside, the temperature inside a vehicle with the windows opened slightly can reach nearly 102 degrees within 10 minutes.

After approximately 30 minutes, the temperature will reach 120 degrees.

“Cars literally turn into ovens in a matter of moments, regardless of whether the windows are rolled down or not,” said Claudia Swing,

coordinator for the San Bernardino County Animal Cruelty Task Force (ACT). “What many pet owners don’t know is that dogs can’t release their body heat like people do who naturally sweat to help their bodies cool down. They regulate their body temperature by panting, so a small closed space such as a car doesn’t provide enough fresh air for their bodies to remain at a safe level.”

Swing added that animals can sustain brain damage or even die in as little as fifteen minutes.

Staying cool is extra tough for dogs because they

can only reduce their internal temperature by panting and sweating through their paw pads.

inthenews CAP Of Riverside County Seeks Candidates For Community Action Commission In District 2 Riverside

C

ommunity Action Partnership of Riverside County is seeking candidates to serve on the Community Action Commission for the Second Supervisorial District. This includes the cities of Corona, Norco, Eastvale, Jurupa Valley and downtown Riverside. An election for one alternate position will be held at Community Forums in August 2013. The candidates should be members of the low-income community and will represent low-income residents on the Commission. They must reside in the supervisorial district in which they will represent.

Commissioners are volunteers who are dedicated to the mission of community action

and are willing to participate on committee assignments and Commission activities to serve low-income people. The Community Action Commission is a tripartite body, comprised of three sectors: low-income, private, and public.

The low-income sector members are selected by low-income residents in the respective supervisorial districts. Alternates hold the same rights and privileges as primary commissioners.

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age. They cannot be a paid staff member of Community Action Partnership, or a relative of the Community Action staff, Commission or the County Board of Supervisors. Candidates must

complete and return an application to the CAP Riverside office by the August 9, 2013 deadline.

CAP Riverside is the official anti-poverty agency for Riverside County. Its mission is to address the root causes of poverty and to eliminate the conditions of poverty through a range of well-planned programs and services that move low-income families out of poverty with dignity.

magine your kindergartner is visiting a new friend’s house. During the hour they are running around together they’ll pick up and play with all three of the following things, but only two of them have been tested by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) for safety standards. Which one do you want to be sure has been regulated for safety?

• The teddy bear sitting on his or her friend’s bed.

• The plastic gun with the cowboy costume in the toy box.

• The real handgun kept unlocked and loaded in his father’s nightstand.

If you hoped you could count on safety features on the real gun, you’d be making a tragic mistake. Many Americans heed the CPSC and its recalls of dangerous products to help keep their families safe. As the agency describes its job, “CPSC is charged with protecting the public from unreasonable risks of injury or death associated with the use of the thousands of types of consumer products under the agency's jurisdiction . . . CPSC’s work to ensure the safety of consumer products - such as toys, cribs, power tools, cigarette lighters, and household chemicals contributed to a decline in the rate of deaths and injuries associated with consumer products over the past 40 years.” But thanks in large part to the work of the gun lobby, guns are specifically not under the CPSC’s jurisdiction and are the only consumer product not regulated for safety. Instead the CPSC is expressly forbidden from regulating the

manufacture and sale of guns, although they are one of the most lethal consumer products.

A 1976 amendment to the Consumer Product Safety Act specifically states that the Commission “shall make no ruling or order that restricts the manufacture or sale of guns, guns ammunition, or components of guns ammunition, including black powder or gun powder for guns.” As a result, the CPSC can regulate teddy bears and toy guns but not real guns.

In the Children’s Defense Fund (CDF)’s new report Protect Children Not Guns 2013, we’ve identified consumer safety standards, childproof safety features, and authorizeduser identification technology for all guns as three major gaps in our nation’s current gun safety policy where we can do better to protect child lives. Every gun in our country should be childproof. One-third of all households with children have at least one gun in the home, and it’s estimated that nearly two million children live in homes with an unlocked and loaded gun. But federal law is silent on gunrelated consumer safety standards and child access prevention, and for nearly forty years the CPSC’s hands have been tied even as potentially lifesaving technology has been innovated. As a result, many handguns don’t contain easily installed life-saving safety features.

Many gun tragedies could have been prevented by the use of simple technologies that exist today. Authorized-user identification, or personalized, gun technology encompasses a broad range of manufacturing designs that allow guns to recognize an authorized user and become inoperable when handled by

pointofview anyone else. One current version is featured in a pistol that communicates with a connected wristwatch via microchips; the watch’s owner enters a personal identification number, and the gun can only be operated when it is located within a certain distance of the watch.

The New Jersey Institute of Technology has been working on developing another form of personalized gun technology, “grip recognition,” which would recognize the palm configuration of authorized users and only operate for them. Research and data suggest this kind of technology would be extremely effective in preventing child and teen deaths. A study of unintentional gun deaths in Maryland and Milwaukee County, Wisconsin found that 37 percent of the deaths would have been preventable with gun personalization technology. This technology would also make it harder for children to commit suicide with

their parents’ guns and make stolen guns inoperable. Some lawmakers are finally taking steps to make these kinds of safety measures standard.

New Jersey passed a model law in 2002 requiring that all new handguns sold in the state include authorized-user identification technology within three years of becoming available in the state. At the national level, Representative John Tierney (D-MA) has introduced the Personalized Handgun Safety Act of 2013, which would take a major step forward for gun safety by requiring handguns manufactured in the future to be fitted with personalization technology. This proposed legislation would authorize National Institute of Justice grants for further development of personalized handgun technology and require older guns to be retrofitted with personalization technology before being

resold with the retrofitting process paid for by the Department of Justice. It also would direct the CPSC to create the safety standard for personalized handguns that all newly manufactured handguns would be required to meet and require that all U.S. manufactured handguns comply with the CPSC standard two years after the date of enactment—finally giving the CPSC the authority to develop safety standards related to guns. Urge your members of Congress to support these common sense safety measures. Congress must subject guns to the same consumer product safety regulations that cover virtually every other consumer product. It’s time for childproof safety features on all guns to save young lives.

Put simply, we need reform now because our current immigration system is broken, causing uncertainty for countless families, businesses and entire communities. For example, it’s a travesty that a young person can serve our nation in the military but be denied an opportunity to obtain citizenship.

With thousands of undocumented immigrants living right here in San Bernardino County, reform that includes a path to citizenship for those who abide by our nation’s laws and live up to our ideals will bring families out of the shadows and help them become full participants in the American Dream.

As the Mayor of Redlands, the health and vitality of our community is my top priority. I strongly believe improving our immigration laws can help grow our local economy, expand our tax base and benefit every citizen of Redlands and the region.

Fighting Job Loss Depression With Facts Dear Dr. Levister: Since I lost my job nine months ago, I feel “engulfed” with anger. I can’t control it. Is this a form of depression? G.L. ast Wednesday an early morning fire burned much of the Riverside office of the VOICE. The Riverside Fire Department responded to the call shortly after 2 am.

According to the initial report by fire investigators, the blaze started near the attached carport, and burned much of the north side of the building leaving the attic exposed and the majority of the inside gutted. An investigation into the cause is ongoing.

No one was harmed in the fire. And because of the expert work of the firefighters on scene important business files and IT equipment were saved.

The office was housed in a Downtown Riverside 100 year old two-story craftsman bungalow which was originally built as a singlefamily dwelling. Over the years the building has served as a battered women’s shelter and transitional living facility before being purchased seven years ago for the VOICE and other related businesses.

With plans to rebuild on the site, the VOICE will temporarily move its Riverside office to the 4th floor of the Walling Building next to the California Museum of Photography on University Avenue.

DREAMSCAPE Reflections on

I

n the wake of the George Zimmerman verdict, UCR Professor Rickerby Hinds organized a special, free presentation of his play Dreamscape and moderated a postperformance panel discussion that addressed the relationship between police and the Black community. The event took place on Friday, July 26, 2013, in the UCR Studio Theater, hosted by the Department of Theatre.

Dreamscape depicts the death and inner life of a young woman, “Myeisha Mills,” who dreams though the impact of the twelve bullets that kill her. The play is a meditation and reimagining of the night of December 28, 1998, when nineteenyear-old Tyisha Miller was shot and killed by four Riverside Police Department officers while she lay unconscious in a car. Hinds has spent years revisiting this painful, historic event.

The staging for Dreamscape features only two actors, two chairs, and one hand-held mic. The play opens with Myeisha seated, staring at the audience. We don’t know it yet, but she’s sitting in the car on the night of December 28th. She asks, Ever have one of those dreams Where nothing comes out when you try to scream?

Christmas was three days ago Jingle Bells and ho, ho, ho Warning This ain’t gon’ be one-o-those feel-good shows Just so you know Dreamscape isn’t a feel-good play: it takes a powerfully clear-eyed look at the relationships between race, the body, and violence. The play is structured around an autopsy report recited by a dispassionate coroner. As each of the twelve bullet wounds is described in horrifying clinical detail—the damage done to the arm, shoulder, scalp, teeth, thigh, neck, back, breast, eye, mouth, skull—Myeisha reminisces about

her life, using each body part as a jumping off point. She describes the pleasures of softball, dancing, kissing, and hair styling with sweetness, humor, and all the cheekiness of a nineteen-yearold. Listening to her enjoyments and hopes is seductive: you begin to forget that she’s dead, and you begin to listen simply for the pleasure of listening to her, so each time the coroner describes another bullet wound, we are shoved back into the reality of the trauma, re-living and re-experiencing it over and over. The body of Tyisha Miller is both broken apart and reintegrated through Hinds’ writing.

The casting for the show was deeply effective.

Rhaechyl Walker played Myeisha with stunning physicality. Her ability to shift between everyday teenaged talk into rhapsodic hip-hop oratory was hugely enjoyable and often exhilarating.

Her dance skills are formidable. Choreographer Carrie Mikuls combined hip-hop and modern

dance into a seamless yet crisp expressive language that Walker handled effortlessly. The choreography forces the viewer to see Myeisha as a set of embodied experiences and as a body made up out of separate parts, each grievously injured.

John “Faahz” Merchant was a brooding presence on stage throughout, beatboxing intermittently and offering a kind of Greek chorus commentary. He shape-shifted between the coroner, the 911 operator, a guy at a club who dances joyously with Myeisha, and then stepped forward horrifyingly as one of the four Riverside Police Department officers who killed Tyisha Miller. The dense virtuosity of Merchant’s beatboxing filled in the spaces between the violent reality of the bullets and Myeisha’s dreamt memories, sometimes as the thumping soundscape of a dance club and sometimes as an MC’s commentary. Merchant moved

fluently between percussive techniques, vocal turntablism, and the occasional ripped sample as he slipped in and out of the coroner’s report, wielding the mic as the officer’s baton and finally, irrevocably, as a gun.

Hinds has done his homework. The cold language of the autopsy report (taken directly from the actual Riverside coroner’s report for Tyisha Miller) and the actual testimony of Officer Daniel Hotard becomes the theater of the real in Dreamscape. Hinds has brilliantly turned the raw stuff of Tyisha Miller’s death into a poetic, choreographic meditation on a young African American woman’s inner life. The wound of that loss is thus re-experienced by the audience over and over again as the evening proceeds: the more we learn about Myeisha, the more she literally comes to life, and the more the repeated fact of her death shocks.

Dreamscape is solidly situated in the Riverside’s landscape, featuring sensuous descriptions of Gram’s Mission Barbecue food

and the atmosphere in Rubidoux’s Club Metro.

Riverside was Myeisha’s world, and Hinds recreates the local with care and deep affection.

Yet this is far more than a ‘local’ play. Just as Susan Straight’s novels make Riverside (“Rio Seco,” as she calls it) into a place simultaneously local and universal, so Hinds’ evocation of the “IE” through Myeisha’s family, friends, loves, and daily pleasures creates a landscape at once precise, intimate, and uniquely Southern Californian, and also a horrifying summation of a profoundly racialized American city.

At a certain point in the play, you know that it can only come full circle—you know she will end up back in the car, that there really isn’t any other way to end the play except to return to the body robbed of speech and testimony. Hinds has not only opened up and extended the power of hip-hop theater but also offers a history lesson reconstituting what was shattered on December 28, 1998, and he does so without allowing us to forget that Tyisha Miller is, in fact, lost to us.

Hinds has worked on Dreamscape since 2005.

I have seen it four times, first at the UCR Califest Fifth Annual Hip-Hop Theatre Festival in 2007, where it was staged much more elaborately, with a couch, table, a DJ’s station (complete with two turntables and laptop), and projected anatomical drawings of the human body. That staging began and ended with Myeisha lying on the autopsy table covered with a sheet. The current staging couldn’t be simpler, more pared down, or more effective.

The stage is bare save for two folding chairs; the only prop is the beatboxer’s microphone.

Myeisha’s dancing offers a less realist but more allusive depiction of the body (as memory and as embodied commentary) than the agit prop gesture of ‘showing’ the audience the death at the center of the play. My only concern about Dreamscape’s changes over time is that Hinds has sometimes distanced himself a bit from the fraught racial politics surrounding Tyisha Miller’s death. Losing your possessions in a structural fire is devastating, and of course any loss of life is tragic. In the wake of our own tragedy at the home of the VOICE, our staff would like to remind you of a few things you can do to prevent a fire from occurring in your own home: 1. Never smoke when you’re drowsy or in bed!

If you smoke, put your cigarettes all the way out!

2. Have a working smoke alarm. A working smoke alarm in your home reduces your chances of dying in a fire by nearly half. Test your smoke alarm monthly, and change the batteries twice per year.

3. Place a smoke alarm on every level of your home and outside bedrooms. If you keep your bedroom doors closed, place a smoke alarm inside each bedroom as well.

4. Never leave candles burning unattended.

Make sure you place burning candles on a non-combustible surface, such as metal or glass, and keep them away from combustible materials such as drapes, furniture, and clothing.

5. Remember that space heaters need space.

Keep objects at least three feet away from the heater in all directions and never connect the heater to spliced, do-it-yourself or damaged wiring.

6. Prepare an escape plan and practice it regularly with everyone in the home. In case of a fire, follow the escape plan, get out and stay out.

UCR, attended by 500 people), he preferred to talk about the play rather than the real community pain upon which the play is based and which it re-engages. He has removed parts of the actual officers’ interviews, formerly included in the 2007 script, that revealed their attempts to describe the victim as the aggressor and their denial of welldocumented displays of racist bravado by some officers at the scene. The 2007 script contained this passage, for instance: At no time before, during, or after the shooting incident, did I laugh, make a “whooping” sound, slap another officer or anyone on the back, or high-five any officer after the incident. I was very distressed that the occupant had armed herself, forcing me to use deadly force.

That passage is now gone, and while the current script fully engages with the visceral ferocity of Myeisha’s death, it doesn’t refer, for instance, to the racialized reality of RPD officers who described Tyisha Miller’s grieving relatives at the scene as “animals having a Kwanzaa celebration.” The current script shies away from anything very specific about why the officers responded in the way that they did. Still, Myeisha wryly acknowledges that being Black is risky: Soon’s I hear the cops’ sirens the first thing pop in my mind “Man I wish I was a white girl” or at least a little lighter than I am Not white in the “I can flip my hair” and “I ain’t got no booty” kind-a way But in the “Officer, officer can you help me” kind-a way In the “Hey young lady are you okay” kind-a way In the “Do you need a ride somewhere you look lost” kind-a way In short, we witness Myeisha dying while black but see little of the police attitudes that resulted in community outrage, a year of protests and demonstrations, the creation of the Community Police Review Commission, and a five-year consent decree for the Riverside Police Department. Certainly I don’t think Dreamscape can or should address all that. Hinds’ decision to stage Dreamscape in response to the Zimmerman verdict makes his intentions clear. If theater is a tool for liberation, then we must “find the places where the arts intersect with real life,” as Hinds

put it when introducing the play last week.

All the talent in this production—Rhaechyl Walker, John “Faahz” Merchant, Carrie Mikuls, and Hinds himself—is local, home-grown, and at a national level of professionalism and skill. All four have roots in the Inland region but you don’t have to look hard to see that they’re contenders.

The panel discussion featured Dr. E.M. Abdulmumin, Woodie Rucker-Hughes, and Alexander Hinds (the playwright’s twenty-yearold son). Audience members were eager to talk about Trayvon Martin. A woman in the audience asked the actors whether they were thinking about Martin while they performed and Rhaechyl Walker simply said, “Yes—this is the wound that never closes.” An African American woman described watching her children become adults, saying “I thank God my son has made it to forty, but when he turned eighteen I thought, you are now a grown Black man who people will fear.” An African American man observed that “it’s a new era of Black genocide, and all available systems are failing us.” Sitting in the audience, Calvin Freeman (chief investigator for the Riverside County public defender) said he wanted to “shield”

his twin children, now undergraduates at UCR, because “things don’t change,” but he carries the burden of knowing that he won’t be able to protect them. Larry Geraty (former president of La Sierra University) described watching Fox News after the verdict broke and said, “We really do live in a racist society. Something is really wrong in our country.” Several audience members called for local dialogues on the implications of the Zimmerman verdict.

Dreamscape will hopefully go on national tour, and its meanings will necessarily expand as it travels. This play and the story behind it have deep local meaning for Riversiders, and to see the play right here, and to watch it surrounded by other community members, offered us a powerful chance to think, together, about the very terms for local history and memory. I am sorry to say that I fully expect Riverside will need repeated stagings of Dreamscape as the years go on, but it served a powerful purpose last week when helped the community respond to the violent injustice of Trayvon Martin’s death.

ow in its 22nd year, Ghost Walk Riverside continues the tradition of storytelling during California Riverside Ballet's annual event.

Featuring local Riverside talent from King High School and North High School in Riverside and noted community speakers, original stories will be presented to the delight of young and old. Tours will depart from the Main Street Mall October 25-26, 2013. Five tour options will be available for the spooky pleasure of all who enter, two family-friendly tours and three tours for the more adventurous and daring tour participant.

But the fun doesn't stop there. Once again, there will be live entertainment featuring music, dance and tricks and treats. With new thrills like the "Dark Dreams Doorway" and annual extras like the "Tombstone Trolley", this year's event will not disappoint. inthenews continued Supervisors Request State and Federal Funds for Mountain Fire, Flooding Emergencies Riverside

A

t the request of Supervisors Jeff Stone and John J. Benoit, the Riverside County Board of Supervisors formally declared two local emergencies for the Mountain Fire and added recent and future potential flood damages to the county’s request for recovery funds.

The county is seeking assistance to recoup the costs for suppressing the now fully contained Mountain Fire and flooding. Other costs associated with the fire include evacuations, shelters, law enforcement personnel expenses, county roads and animal services. The proclamations ask for relief for these expenses through a presidential declaration, Small Business Administration disaster declaration and California Disaster

Assistance Act funds.

The fire started in the San Jacinto mountains on July 15 and spread east of Mountain Center, through the Apple Canyon and Bonita Vista areas and along the Desert Divide and southern portion of the San Jacinto Wilderness. It threatened the nearby communities of Idyllwild, Pine Cove and Garner Valley.

A week later, heavy storm runoff sent mud and debris flows into the area, causing damage to the Yokoji-Zen Mountain Center retreat. For the next three to five years, county officials anticipate further flooding effects on fire-damaged areas and also Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians and Palm Springs land and the flood control channels

of the Tahquitz Dam and Outlet Channel and Palm Canyon Wash. Potential ramifications include flooding, mud and debris flows, road closures and evacuations of citizens and critical facilities.

Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom issued an emergency proclamation for the fire on July 19. The county has also requested a Governor’s proclamation for the second emergency pertaining to flooding.

Tuesday’s board actions ratify proclamations that were previously issued when the board was not in session. A county ordinance empowers Riverside County’s director of emergency services to proclaim the local emergency when warranted and necessitated by conditions of extreme peril, subject to subsequent board confirmation.

He has written for numerous national publications including: Vibe, The Source, Hollywood Reporter, and Entertainment Weekly. And he is interviewed Quincy Jones, Janet Jackson, Beyonce, Kanye West, Eminem, Aaliyah, Rihanna, and Chris Brown.

As I talk about my career pursuits, I want to note that I am grateful to be blessed to have a career path that I love. I have worked hard along the way, but it is a highly competitive field and I recognize that I have been shown favor that I attribute to many prayers and my faith in God. Paulette was my mentor at CSUSB. She was the president of the Black Student Union when I started at CSUSB and she took me under her wings. When I later changed my major to Communications, I told her that I wanted to get experience, and she got me the job as production assistant at the Black Voice. Mr. and Mrs. Brown and the staff at the Black Voice treated my brother (who also worked there) and me like family.

The Black Voice News was my first full-fledged media job. It was great because I began working there as the production assistant in January 1990 when I changed my major to Communications. It was great because I was able to immediately put to use the information I was learning in college.

I knew that I wanted to work in entertainment, so after one year, I asked if I could also take on the position of Entertainment Editor. By the time I graduated from California State University San Bernardino, I had already made many valuable music business contacts, many that I still work

with today.

I’ve always had a love for music. My father is a musician so I grew up being exposed to a lot of music. But I didn’t consider pursuing a musicbased career until college. I decided to become a music journalist after taking two years to consider my interests and talents. The thought of finding a career that would allow me to write and analyze music was a dream.

I started California State University San Bernardino as a Computer Science major but was struggling with my math and science classes. Former CSUSB Communications Studies Dean Sidney Ribeau (now president of Howard University) advised me to get more tutors or to consider another major. After some soul searching I settled on Communications with a emphasis in professional writing. CSUSB didn’t offer a straight-ahead journalism degree but I took all the journalism classes offered as well as some courses in radio.

I stood next to each other as we saw this then unknown rapper from Detroit come in second place. I remember he said something like, “I’m going to lose tonight because I’m White,” and I remember the crowd going crazy. Soren and I remember feeling like he was cheated that night.

But it was that night that an intern from Interscope record got his demo, and Sway (now on MTV) and Tech invited him onto their radio show and he later got a deal. Moments like these have been incredible to witness. It’s been like having a front row seat to key moments in music history.

I am very family oriented. I’m married to fellow Inland Empire native and CSUSB alum, Ebony Macon Johnson, and we have a set of 10-yearold boy and girl twins, Reese and Bailey. The kids have been very active in competitive dance, basketball, Cub Scouts and Jack and Jill, so we are always on the go. Ebony and I both have large families based in the Los Angeles and Inland Empire areas so we always celebrating with the family.

Once I became Entertainment Editor, I kept clips of my articles. After I accumulated a year’s worth of related writing samples, another former CSUSB Dean Aubrey Bonnett referred me to one of his former students, Kate Ferguson, who was the editor-in-chief of Word Up! magazine in New York. I sent her my portfolio and she began using me as a freelance writer for Word Up! and its sister publications.

The most interesting things I’ve seen at my job is artist like Eminem, will.i.am, Brandy, Erykah Badu, Taylor Swift, and others, before they were superstars, recognizing that they had something special and watching them flourish. When I was working at Rap Sheet, we co-hosted the Rap Olympics rap battle that Eminem competed in before he got a record deal. One of my best friends, fellow music journalist Soren Baker, and Billy with Chilli of TLC
