n 1984 I briefly worked at a fast food restaurant. I was a 16-year-old high school student and admittedly spoiled by the wages I earned from my first job. At 15, I had made $10 an hour as a phone bank operator along with women almost twice my age. I was hired by my neighbor Bob Parker to work as a seasonal employee whenever he had a project but primarily during campaign season. A year later he purchased a Pioneer Chicken franchise on the corner of Baseline and Mt. Vernon in San Bernardino and offered me another job. Although I earned the minimum wage, it was better than my seasonal phone bank gig because I was able to work more hours per week and for as long as I wanted. There were no seasonal restrictions. Of course there were things I hated about that job: the crappy brown polyester uniform, standing on my feet for an entire shift, and having to deal with our prostitute and drug dealing clientele. You just never knew when something might go down on that corner. And eventually something did. A robbery. Then another robbery. And eventually Mr. Parker closed-up and went back to seasonal political work. As a teenager who still lived under my parents’ roof I used my money for non-essentials. Like most high school students, it was easy to get work at our local fast food restaurant. We basically were just competing against our peers who were also still living at home. According to a study of fast food employment published in 1984 by the National Institute for Work and Learning, 70 percent of fast food workers then were between the ages of 1620 years old. For our generation, these jobs were entry-level employment that offered an opportunity to develop transferable job-related skills. In 2014, 70 percent of fast food workers are 20 years old or older. And according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, at least one in four has at least one child to support, a third of that group has some college, and at least 6 percent have a college degree. The job market has clearly changed since I was a teenager, and these jobs are no longer just entry-level skills development opportunities, they are long-term employment that supports families. And the current national minimum wage has these households hovering well below the poverty line. In his State of the Union address earlier this year President Obama called on Congress to raise the national minimum wage from $7.25 to $10.10, and provide a “living wage” to all fulltime workers. California is one of those states ahead of the national average, with a new $9.00 wage up from $8.00 per hour, the first minimum wage rise in six years and approved to rise to $10 in January 2016. And cities within the state are considering even higher wage increases. Earlier this Spring San Francisco’s City Council approved the highest-in-state minimum wage and is pushing for a $15 wage in the city that made the top of the list for the fastest growing wealth divide. Just last week LA Mayor Eric Garcetti announced his proposal for a living wage ordinance. And San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer last month vetoed a City Council approved hike that would have set the minimum at $11.50 over three years. Just this week the City Council overrode the veto and the business community started a petition campaign to put the initiative on the ballot for voters to decide. When it comes to the minimum versus living wage debate, as a small business owner, I understand the concerns of the business community as we slowly recover from the recent recession, but as a publisher of a newspaper that has historically advocated for the voiceless and disenfranchised, I understand the need for a living wage, especially for our families here in Inland Southern California. In an era where the gap between the rich and the poor is widening and those in between have seen their incomes stagnate, this may be, as President Obama has suggested, “the defining challenge of our time.” It is definitely a contentious issue that all sides will need to sacrifice to resolve.

Expect Faster SBA Loan Decisions, Contreras-Sweet Says By Maria Contreras-Sweet
I
n my first 100 days as the administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration, I’ve participated in constructive e x c h a n g e s with bankers all across the country gathering insight about how we can get more capital into the hands of America’s small businesses. We understand that feedback from the lending community is essential and we want to say loud and clear to everyone who has shared their thoughts — including those in a recent issue of American Banker Magazine — that we are listening. The two most important tasks the SBA has heard from lenders are: modernize and simplify lending processes, and enhance existing lending programs, specifically 7(a) and 504 loans. Both practices, if done right, can foster the growth of American enterprises and maximize our economy’s job creation potential. The SBA is committed to modernizing and simplifying its lending practices and, under the Obama administration, the agency has eliminated pages of regulations that were blocking the capital pipeline and hindering the growth of our economy. First, we eliminated the wealth test so borrowers are no longer turned down for 7(a) and 504 loans because they enlist a wealthy investor to help underwrite their project. Secondly, we removed the nine-month rule, so as long as the expense is related to a 504 project, the loan covers it. Lastly, we changed our collateral rules to give borrowers more flexibility. This allows applicants to declare other assets when applying for a 504 loan in order to receive a lower interest rate. The SBA is committed to adopting common-sense reforms that make it easier both for borrowers and lenders. One of my top priorities as SBA administrator is to implement smart systems that encourage our lending partners to provide more capital to Main Street. Just recently, we launched the SBA’s credit scoring tool for 7(a) loans, which effectively
4
streamlines underwriting guidelines for loans under $350,000. This online tool automates a major piece of required credit analysis through the use of a dynamic and predictive scoring system. The result is an objective assessment of risk that allows the lending process to become faster, fairer, and more accurate and consistent — expediting access to much-needed capital for entrepreneurs and business owners. And, we aren’t stopping there. In an effort to save banks thousands of dollars and hours of paperwork, we are gearing up to launch SBA One, an interactive, user-friendly lending platform that will automate the upload of documents, generation of forms, and accept electronic signatures. By facilitating expedited decisions on loan applications and digitalizing paperwork, we trust that the loan application experience will prove to be faster, simpler and more effective for our lending partners and small business-owners alike. The SBA’s 7(a) and 504 loans support over 650,000 jobs and granted nearly $30 billion in loans in fiscal year 2013. We are working to ensure 7(a) loans are accessible, inclusive and reflective of America’s diverse business community. Four
out of five loan applications we receive from Hispanic- and African-American business owners are for $150,000 or less. As a result, the SBA has decided to reduce to zero our fees on loans under $150,000, which resulted in a 15% increase in our small-dollar lending. The SBA’s 504 loan program was well received by the lending community, and we have heard your appeals to push for the reauthorization of its refinancing component. I have testified before the Senate and asked to restore lenders’ ability to make refinancing loans under this program. Currently, the 504 refinancing option is part of President Obama’s budget, and is awaiting approval from Congress. Our nation’s lending community plays a crucial role in the growth and expansion of small businesses, and the health of our economy. The SBA looks forward to building stronger relationships with banks of all sizes and will continue to offer a forum for discussion and exchange of ideas, so please keep your valuable insight coming. Together, we can find effective solutions that improve the lending process and facilitate the access of capital for America’s entrepreneurs.

n accordance with AJR 51, Assemblymember Cheryl R. Brown (D-San Bernardino) will host a public forum to educate patients and their families about sickle cell anemia on Friday, September 12, at Kaiser Permanente Palm Court II in Fontana from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. AJR 51, authored by Assemblymember Brown, declares the month of September 2014 as Sickle Cell Anemia Awareness Month in California. The resolution also urges President Obama and members of the U.S. Congress to support the continuation of funding for sickle cell anemia centers and research. Sickle cell anemia is a serious blood disorder that causes the body to create curvy or “sickle” shaped red blood cells that block the flow of blood and prevent oxygen from getting to the body’s tissues. This can cause severe pain and organ damage. It’s been estimated that over 90,000
Americans suffer from sickle cell disease. This illness affects 1 out of 500 African Americans and 1 out of 36,000 Latinos. It’s also been known to affect individuals of Indian, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean ancestry. “Regardless of race or ethnicity, people of all backgrounds have been affected by this disorder,” stated Assemblymember Brown. “It’s important to have a basic understanding of sickle cell disease because it’s the first step in improving patient care.” Next Friday’s event will feature guest speakers: Maxwell Ohikuare, M.D., San Bernardino County Public Health; Dean Richard Olds, M.D., UC Riverside School of Medicine; Michael Nduati, M.D., UC Riverside School of Medicine; Mary Brown, CEO, Sickle Cell Foundation of California; and Farron Dozier, CEO, What’z Da Count, Inc. Topics of discussion will include an overview of education and research related to sickle

ccording to statistics, although the overall murder rate in the U.S. has fallen over the past several years, the number of Black male victims of innercity low-income areas has increased. African Americans make up only 14 percent of the population, but sadly more than half of the country’s homicide victims are Black. Recent police brutality incidents including victims Mike Brown from Ferguson, MO. and Ezell Ford from Los Angeles, Calif. have sparked human rights’ protests nationwide and enraged the community on many levels. These deaths of unarmed citizens have raised the necessity for addressing these issues within our community. The NAACP-Riverside Branch is responding to these senseless killings with a call for the community to take pre-emptive action. “Blurred Lines” Community Forum – Standing Up for Justice is a movement with four tiers. The purpose is to start a dialogue addressing the concerns of the ongoing violence in our community and understanding the connection between Black-on-Black crimes –vs– general brutality in our community. The first community forum will take place on Monday, Sept. 15, 2014 at Bobby Bonds Park in the Caesar Chavez Center from 7 to 9 p.m. (immediately following the NAACP Monthly Membership Meeting and Branch Election). The format will include a panel discussion with community leaders such as; NAACP-Riverside Branch President Woodie RuckerHughes, Dr. Abdulmumin, Terry Boykins and other special invited guests, followed by a Q&A. Next month, Blurred Lines will continue with a special performance of ‘Dreamscape’, the soulstirring play depicting the local well-known police brutality case of Tyisha Miller; Part Two of “Blurred Lines” Community Forum, which will include panelists Police Chief Sergio Diaz, other law enforcement representatives and elected officials. Blurred Lines will conclude with a March for Peace “Put Down Your Guns” Rally on Saturday, November 8. (More details are forthcoming). “It is time for us to bring forth a collective response that addresses all aspects of the current wave of violence in our community,” said NAACPRiverside Branch Criminal Justice Chair Imam Terry Taalib Major. “We absolutely must address the self-inflicted violence being perpetrated within our community by our own sons and young people. Only then can we gain the moral imperative necessary to bring forth an empowered and unified response to this crucial issue.” These events are free and open to the public. Salt and High Blood Pressure Dear Dr. Levister: What are the current recommendations for salt intake. I have high blood pressure. A.S.
Dear A.S.: The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend limiting sodium to less than 2,300 mg a day — or 1,500 mg if you’re age 51 or older, or if you are black, or if you have high blood pressure, diabetes or chronic kidney disease. Keep in mind that these are upper limits, and less is usually best, especially if you’re sensitive to the effects of sodium. If you aren’t sure how much sodium your diet should include, talk to your doctor or dietitian. If you’re like many people, you’re getting far more sodium than is recommended, and that could lead to serious health problems. You probably aren’t even aware of just how much sodium is in your diet. Consider that a single teaspoon of table salt, which is a combination of sodium and chloride, has 2,325 milligrams (mg) of sodium. And it’s not just table salt you have to worry about. Many processed and prepared foods contain sodium. Excess salt consumption raises your blood Child Abduction, continued from page 4
a routine basis, the CAU partners with courts and law enforcement throughout the United States to recover abducted children who are carried across state lines. In cases of international child abduction, the CAU implements the terms of the Hague Convention, an international treaty signed by more than 60 countries. The San Bernardino County District Attorney’s CAU staff consists of Deputy DA Kurt Rowley, DA investigators Karen Cragg and Larry Jackson, and Secretary Bert Mendez. In this case the CAU was operating under a statutory mandate to enforce the family law court’s child custody orders. “The work they do every day is very emotionally-charged, and they continually do their best to ensure that children are safe and that the court’s child custody orders are followed,” said Trager-Dvorak. “In this situation, it was very rewarding to watch Dad, with tears in his eyes, happy to have his son back, and hugging him like he would never let go. I had to fight back tears myself.”
pressure. Salt would rapidly be fatal if the kidneys could not excrete it as fast as you eat it. But, the kidneys excrete salt faster at a higher blood pressure, and the ability of the kidneys to raise blood pressure provides powerful and life-saving protection against the accumulation of a dangerous backlog of salt. However, high blood pressure (also known as ‘hypertension’) unfortunately has a number of dangerous long-term health outcomes, and greatly increases the risk of both stroke and heart disease. Taste buds are ‘flexible’ with respect to salt
– they can adjust to both higher and lower salt intakes. By gradually reducing salt intake over a period of several months, the palate will alter to the extent that normal processed foods (i.e. those with added salt) will start to taste ‘too salty’. People who are lucky enough to have normal blood pressure should adopt a low-salt diet to prevent hypertension developing later in life— lowering salt intake after a rise in blood pressure has occurred will not always have a reverse effect on blood pressure.

pointofview “The Emotional Toll of Growing Up Black In America”
D
r. Terrell Strayhorn, a brilliant Black Ohio State University professor, recently opened the Educational Testing Service and Children’s Defense Fund co-sponsored symposium on Advancing Success for Black Men in College by sharing a question his 14 yearold son asked him: why did he get in trouble for speaking out of turn when he jumped in to answer his teacher’s question, but when his White friend did the same thing she was praised for being excited about learning? Dr. Strayhorn noted that many parents and grandparents and educators and policy experts are concerned about the same question: “There are lots of Black and Brown boys who are often penalized for committing the same exact act that non-Black and non-Brown, usually White kids, commit in school—and some students are praised for certain behaviors that other kids are penalized for. It sends a very mixed message, because my son is confused: ‘So what should I do? Not be excited about learning? What if you just can’t wait for the question? How do I signal to the teacher I’m not a rule-breaker?” Dr. Strayhorn said these questions are something we’ve got to think about. Dr. Strayhorn highlighted a number of other roadblocks we must all be sensitive to and overcome to get all our children on a path of healthy development, confidence, and success. The disparate treatment of Black children in the classroom from the earliest years, especially Black boys, often discourages and knocks many off the path to high school graduation and college. The cumulative and convergent toll of subtle but
discouraging adult actions in schools and other child serving systems they come into contact with too often impedes the success of children of color, especially those who are poor, and burdens them with an emotional toll they don’t deserve. I used to sing loudly with my children and Sesame Street’s Kermit the Frog “It’s Not Easy Being Green.” I can only imagine the number of Black children and adults who sing inside daily “It’s Not Easy Being Black.” I’m sure that Black youths seeing what happened to Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown and others who lost their lives for walking while Black and those who are stopped and frisked and arrested and victimized by excessive police force carry these burdens inside every day. Even the youngest Black boys, ages 4 and 5, who are put out of school and even preschool for nonviolent disciplinary charges for which White children would never be suspended or expelled must be confused and feel this way too. Dr. Strayhorn spelled out another way Black children are harmed: through disparate resources in the classroom, including textbooks, that hold Black, Brown, and poor students back. He described an experience he had while a professor at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville working with a Knoxville high school that was 97 percent Black. “I found that in this high school these students were learning from textbooks that were at least 10 years old... What exactly are the implications of learning from a textbook that’s 10 years old? Well, I’ll tell you this: that if you don’t catch up too quickly, especially

in terms of science, there are certain technological revolutions that have happened at such a fast pace that they’re not even mentioned in the books from which they’ll learn— but will certainly be part of the test that they’ll take to demonstrate competency to go on to Julianne Malveaux college. So it means a NNPA Columnist whole school of children and youths are set behind, not because they’re saying ‘Don’t take me into the future’ or ‘I don’t want to learn’ or ‘I don’t want to be successful,’ but in fact because they’re studying hard from textbooks that were set up to set them behind. That’s inequitable and that’s unfair.” As he covered what does work in building a pathway to success, Dr. Strayhorn emphasized the need for positive interventions based on proven designs, because in his program evaluation experience he’s seen far too many well-intentioned efforts that lacked a measurable impact because good ideas weren’t well implemented. He said as an example mentoring programs are especially popular, but many don’t provide adequate training: “If I ask everyone at this table, “Will you be a mentor?,” and you all say yes, and I say, “Now, go out and mentor,” but never tell you what a mentor is supposed to do, I never tell you how important it is to get

Support for Minimum Wage Boost Grows Stronger
With Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti announcing support for $13.25 minimum wage, Inland Empire wages could possibly follow suit By Corey Arvin Staff Writer
L
os Angeles joined a growing number of large metropolitans around the country last week that may invoke a series of increases in the state’s minimum wage – a controversial move in the ongoing debate over income equality. Experts say that following Mayor Eric Garcetti’s announcement Sept. 1, Los Angeles could serve as a model for other cities, potentially putting Inland Empire officials in line to follow and propose their own minimum wage increase. Ellen Reese, Professor of Sociology and Chair of the Labor Studies Program at University of California, Riverside (UCR), says that many Inland Empire workers are currently making substandard wages – much less than the minimum necessary to support a family. According to a U.S. Department of Agriculture report released last year, it would cost an estimated $241,080, about $13,400 per year, for a middle-income couple to support a child born in 2012 for 18 years. Reese said the notion of increasing the minimum wage is a fair proposal given that CEOs earn about 20-30 times more than the average low wage worker. “I think we could use good jobs all over. Our local economy has really suffered, especially in the recession. Many people are still unemployed or under employed. ... And not just any jobs, good jobs, good paying jobs,” said Reese. “Raising the minimum wage would create a good wage floor and [other] wages would go up from that,” she added.
12
Garcetti’s proposal for Los Angeles, which would require support from the City Council, would call for a gradual increase of $1.50 each year in the minimum wage, with $10.25 in 2015, $11.75 in 2016, capping at $13.25 in 2017. Los Angeles’ proposed increase would be one of the highest minimum wage increases in the U.S. “I think there is a definite political advantage. If you look at it, the workers that could benefit would be so grateful to the politicians, backing up their interests. The people who tend to oppose these increases are wealthy and have a short sighted vision,” said Reese. However, for now, the Inland Empire may be too conservative to follow Los Angeles’ lead in increasing the minimum wage, says Catherine E. Levitt, PhD, adjunct professor at California State University of San Bernardino (CSUSB). In part, officials might hesitate because the Inland Empire, particularly San Bernardino County and the city, are still sensitive to economic recovery and the city is still dealing with the effects of its Chapter 11 Bankruptcy filing. Business owners are also showing signs of skepticism in economic growth and hesitating to make any major expenditures, according to a recent study compiled by CSUSB’s Institute of Applied Research, said Levitt. Levitt pointed to Santa Monica as a unique example of where minimum wage hikes have proven to be effective. “Places where they have been successful like Santa Monica have extraordinary conditions. You have a lot of liberals there, but you have a lot of wealth as well. You can do that in Santa Monica. ... The Inland Empire is very middle class at best,”

said Levitt. Pessimism in the economy is also reflected in corporations, which has an impact on job growth and wages, she said. “They’re putting their money where they are going to make money and right now the place is the stock market and that’s because it’s giving a return of about 14 percent a year. If you put your money into people or a bank, you will see a small return from banks and chances are with people they can leave and are not going to be able to make products. ... Large companies are sitting on tons and tons of money and cash is an idle asset until you invest it in something. If there was money in producing something they would but they see the stock market as more beneficial,” said Levitt. Year over year, employment data has indicated that the Inland Empire is an important job market, statewide and nationally. In July, the Inland Empire, cited as “Riverside”, was named as one of the Top 10 cities for job growth in the nation. The report was compiled by Economic Modeling Specialists Intl. (EMSI), which included labor market data for the Riverside metro area and San Bernardino County. “Riverside” was 10th on the CareerBuilder’s list for adding 76,646 jobs from 2010 to 2013, buoyed by strong warehouse and storage industries, as well as medical offices and civil engineering construction. Opponents have criticized various proposals to increase the minimum wage, suggesting it could hurt the economy and put stress on businesses, potentially leading to job losses. “A lot of those fears are over blown. There are lots of well-paid lobbyists and advocates that

don’t want to see a decrease in their high salaries and corporate executives. ... I think [the impact] probably differs from business to business. There might be a slight increase in the price of things, but a penny more would go a long way in paying these workers,” said Reese. Levitt stressed that education is key to more stability and better wages. “You have to get an education. It’s the only thing that differentiates you from everyone else. It gives you skills and teaches to you to communicate. If you are just going general labor, anybody can replace, if someone is willing to
come in for minimum wage,” she said. The wages associated with new job growth have been criticized for being low-end compared to the wages of pre-recession jobs on record. In July, Larry Vaupel, Riverside’s Economic Development Manager said the “ripple effect” of residents having disposable income was a boon for the local economy, boosting sales tax revenue. However, the wages workers earned was something the city remains watchful of, he said. “It is something we are concerned with. You don’t just want low wage jobs, but living wage
jobs. This is something we are watching carefully.” Low wage workers have demonstrated nationally, particularly in the fast food and quick service industry, calling for “living wages” – an outpouring that could be replicated in the Inland Empire, said Reese. “I think it could happen. There are a lot of unions [here].... I think what L.A. is doing is great and if [the proposal] goes through we need to wake up. Union organizers are supportive of this initiative... there is definitely a ground swell of support.”

fter his 10th place finish at Sonoma, the race leading up to Fontana, Will Power held a 50-point lead over fellow teammate Helio Castroneves. Power, the 33-yearold Australian had developed a pattern of second place finishes. Driving for team owner Roger Penske, Power did just that, second place from 2010 to 2012. By the second re-start, Power had managed to pass several drivers into ninth place. Good enough for double points. Finally, the elusive championship was his. The MATV 500 had 17 lead changes by 9 drivers. Average speed of the winner, 196.111 mph under only one caution for 12 laps. The MAVTV feature race was won by veteran Brazilian driver Tony Kanaan. He led for 64 of the 250 laps on Saturday night and dedicated the victory to close friend Dario Franchitti who has retired this season, due to injury. Franchitti was in Kanaan’s the winner’s circle and each shared a special embrace. 1-On Target - Brazilian race driver Tony Kanaan led for 64 laps and won the MATV 500 at Fontana on Saturday night. 2-IndyCar Champion - Will Power makes his 8th podium this season and wins his first IndyCar Championship at California Auto Club Speedway in Fontana.

to know your mentee, I don’t build conditions and environments where you can engage your mentee in meaningful ways, I don’t give you resources to do the most important thing that a mentor has to do, and that is expose the protégé to experiences and opportunities that they might not experience otherwise... Mentoring, for me, is problematic because we pick it up very quickly and we move on with it because it sounds like it ought to work, but we don’t do the work it requires for it to be effective.” Dr. Strayhorn also discussed how important it is to provide role models for young people who look like them and who are culturally sensitive— and how this is especially true for Black boys. He was clear that not all mentors and role models have to “match.” As a young Black graduate student his own most influential mentor was his older White doctoral advisor. However, having some successful role models who do look like you and who have had shared experiences can make a huge difference, and these role models are out there for Black boys trying to imagine their paths through college: “There are models for success... I’ve met tons of young Black men all across the country who are hard working, they are conscientious, they’re industrious, they have high aspirations, and every intention of achieving their dreams. They were raised by moms, dads, guardians, foster parents, sometimes they have met the juvenile justice system, but they are still committed to achieving their goals.” Everybody in the classroom and teaching children today—when for the first time White students will no longer be the majority in our nation’s public schools—needs to be culturally sensitive and culturally trained. This is true for all child-serving institutions. We need to watch out for the subtle as well as the overt ways in which we treat non-White and White children and those who are poor differently. And we need much more diversity in children’s literature so that White, Black, Latino, Native American, Asian American, and all children can be exposed to the rich mosaic of America’s melting pot to help them see themselves and what they can be. As the new school year begins it’s crucial to hold up examples of success and inclusive education— and focus on steps that work to make that success possible for all children. And it is important to hold up examples where all children are excited about learning and feel empowered and encouraged to ask as many questions as they can.

In Memoriam Eric Wade, Longtime Sports Photographer (1967 - 2014) Republished with permission from Our Weekly By Jason Lewis
F
or over 15 years, Sports Photographer, Eric Wade represented the Black Voice News/Voice at numerous events capturing the action through the lens of his camera. With his great eye for photography Wade documented many national sporting events. Wade passed away suddenly on Sunday morning apparently from a severe asthma attack at the age of 47, his family announced. Wade photographed USC’s football game this past Saturday afternoon, and reportedly had chest pains at the conclusion of the contest. His brother Steven Wade said that Eric had dealt with asthma issues since childhood, and that it was not out of the norm for him to go to the hospital for treatment. Steven last spoke to his brother on Sunday morning around 1:30 a.m., while Eric was editing photos from the game. Wade was a well-known figure in sports media; spending many evenings on high school football fields and basketball courts, and he was at nearly every major sporting event in Los Angeles. He covered both UCLA and USC football and basketball games, as well as the Lakers, Clippers, and Sparks. Wade worked for various publications in Los Angeles, including the Herald-Examiner now defunct, and the Los Angeles Sentinel,
and he showcased people at their very best. “He liked to be really helpful to everybody in the community,” Steven said. “He wanted to bring out the best in people.” Wade attended St. Bernard High School in Playa Del Rey before moving on to study art at Otis College of Art and Design. He was a painter, and he also picked up the skill of photography, which he combined with his passion for sports. Within sports media circles, his talents were well respected, as well as of how great of a person he was. “Eric was a great photographer who was comfortable in any setting from high school to college to pros to friends and private events,” said Evan Burns, Daily Breeze writer. “But most of all, he was a dear friend who always encouraged me and was always down to talk whenever. He was like family and his smile made you feel at home.” “In an ultra competitive business where so many people are out for themselves, Eric wasn’t like that,” said Rahshaun Haylock, FOX Sports writer. “As a young journalist, cutting my teeth, he took me under his wing. He reached out to me, unsolicited, and helped instill a confidence in me that continues to go a long way in my development.” Wade also reached out to people on a personal level. “The cat was just first class all the way,” said Jaye Johnson, sports photographer. “He knew I lost my two younger brothers and he said to me, ‘no worries you got a brother in me.’” Wade was also very well known in the entertainment industry, regularly covering the Emmy Awards, Grammy Awards, BET Awards, as well as other major entertainment events. Many A-list celebrities recognized him as they walked the red carpet and his good nature drew people in.
“His personality was vibrant,” said Francis Perdue, publicist. “He loved being around people. He loved shooting them, and showing them how beautiful they were. Whether they were a child on the field or an A-list celebrity.” Bottom left: Sports Editor Gary Montgomery (pink shirt) with longtime friend and photographer Eric Wade.
