riday morning I rushed to the Historic Santa Fe Depot in San Bernardino to make an appearance at the Trucking Summit, and no it wasn’t “a herd of 18-wheelers together in a parking lot atop a mountain summit” as one friend jokingly commented. Hosted by Assemblymember Cheryl Brown, the event brought together leading authorities in the industry to discuss financial opportunities for drivers and featured a keynote address by Assemblymember Jim Frazier, chairman of the Assembly Committee on Transportation. It also featured presentations on environmental regulations by representatives from the Air Resources Board and South Coast Air Quality Management District, and comments by individuals representing different facets of the goods movement economy from independent truckers to distribution center owners. As I pulled into the parking lot and parked my car, my eyes drifted over to the rainbow of shipping containers that served as the backdrop for the morning’s discussion. “Every region has something to offer to the state,” one of the panelist commented. “Our contribution is logistics.” (One of my other friends calls “logistics” a misnomer.) What it often means here is warehousing of goods that come through the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. Eighty percent travel through our region, either by truck or by train. “We’ve been briefed that there will be three times more cargo coming through the ports in the near future,” Assemblymember Frazier reported during his keynote address, as the train whistle drowned out every other word. As the growing number of distribution centers suggests, these goods will increasingly flow through our communities, and will be sheltered and housed here, as we become Southern California’s “backlot” as a recent New York Times article characterized the tens of millions of industrial space we currently have overtaking our landscape and the tens of millions currently under construction. And with the unceasing flow of goods comes environmental impacts that have already negatively affected our air quality, our ailing and neglected transportation infrastructure, and the quality of our jobs. The South Coast and the San Joaquin air basins are two of the worst air basins in the entire nation, with the American Lung Association giving both San Bernardino and Riverside Counties failing marks in its State of the Air 2015 report. And the largest proposed logistics project recently approved by one city is already facing lawsuits for its failure to adequately address environmental and infrastructure issues. Yes we are the “gateway” to the east coast, but we are also selling our land and ourselves cheap. And at a cost that some of us consider “priceless”...a healthy future and good quality of life. Later that evening, I attended the kick-off event for Inlandia Institute’s Marion Mitchell-Wilson Endowment. As I stood on the rooftop of the Riverside Art Museum with the sound of the train whistling in the distance, I thought about the mission of the organization to encourage literary activity in the Inland Empire and I asked myself, “what do we want our story to be? What is our plot? Who are our protagonists? Are we simply a “backlot”? continued on page 7

County Superintendent Ted Alejandre delivered his inaugural State of Education Address on Sept. 16 at the California Theatre in San Bernardino.

County Superintendent Delivers State Of Education Address San Bernardino

M

aking connections to benefit students and providing opportunities through countywide efforts to pull together as communities in support of educating their children were focal points of the inaugural State of Education Address delivered by San Bernardino County Superintendent Ted Alejandre. “I must say that one of the great fortunes I have found as county superintendent is the rich diversity of our student population and communities across San Bernardino County,” Alejandre said. “The passion and dedication that individuals and groups make on behalf of our public schools and students truly transforms lives.” Alejandre delivered the first of his two State of Education Addresses at the California Theatre in San Bernardino. On Sept. 24, he will be in the High Desert to deliver his second address at the First Assembly of God Church (15260 Nisqualli

Road in Victorville). The theme of this year’s address is “Unite. Inspire. Transform.” At the San Bernardino event, San Bernardino County Supervisor James Ramos, who is chairman of the Board, served as the emcee. At the Victorville address, County Supervisor Robert Lovingood, vice chairman of the Board, will be the emcee. Working with the Board of Supervisors on its Countywide Vision, Alejandre touched on several key initiatives as a result of Collective Impact efforts, a coming together of communities on social issues that improve and advance positive change. “When education, government, business, non-profits and citizens unite together to address complex social issues, powerful things happen,” Alejandre said. The San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools is partnering with the County Library System to promote student literacy in the region. A kickoff of the Vision2Read literacy campaign

was held earlier this week at California State University, San Bernardino with a Family Reading Rally. About 50,000 books were donated to families, schools and districts as part of the event. Another area of Collective Impact work this year has been through efforts to cultivate authentic student voice. For the first time, a countywide Student Advisory Panel has been formed with participants from 40 public high schools that is focused on student well-being and pursuit of their dreams. “If we truly want to transform the lives of our students to ensure their success, we must listen and hear their thoughts on what makes for powerful learning and connections,” Alejandre said. Student performances, videos and presentations played a big role during the State of Education. Highlights included video comments from students at Black Rock High School in

Former Four-D College Employees File Small Claims Suit By Rory O’Sullivan Staff Writer or years Jammie Zuber taught medical billing at Four-D Academy’s main campus located in Colton, California. Zuber, a single mother with a family to support believed she was achieving not only her dream, but achieving the American Dream. She was able to support her family and advance her own education, but her dreams were shattered when earlier this year, Four-D shuttered its doors suddenly. She is one of close to 30 former employees that have filed a small claims lawsuit against Four-D owner Linda Smith to recoup months of lost wages. The nursing and vocational trade school was unexpectedly closed on July 12. Former employees and staff received only a vague letter stating the school was having issues with their accreditation. More than three months have passed and employees have yet to hear from Smith. Zuber, who taught medical billing at Four-D, isn’t sure how she is going to make it without a job and the money she is owed. “I have been a fighter my whole life it’s all I know how to do is fight and survive for my family,” said the former employee. Another former Four-D employee, Gina Ruan, who taught nursing, reached out to Smith and her daughter. She left voicemails, emails and Facebook messages. “I know for a fact she read the Facebook messages and still nothing,” said Ruan. “I have a first grader at home that I have to take care of.” “They closed without any explanation to their students and employees,” said Kim Freeman, who taught dentistry at Four-D. “We wouldn’t be as upset if she had been upfront. It doesn’t sit right with all of us to just close. We were owed that.” Phone and email messages left with owner Linda Smith and other school officials were not returned. All employees are owed thousands of dollars and will be in small claims court this month. Each

H individual plaintiff will have their case heard by a small claims court commissioner, a temporary judge or a judge. Smith has been served and whether she shows up to each case or not, a judgment will be made against her in the case. The women were also treated “harshly” when they went to get their belongings from their offices weeks after they showed up to work only to find a padlock on the door of the Colton campus. Ruan said they were forced to wait outside for hours in the summer sun because only one employee was let in at a time. Officials from the McGeorge School of Law who work in the Inland area said by law, the school must pay its former employees. There could be a challenge recovering the lost wages if Smith loses and then files for bankruptcy. The first case was scheduled to be heard early this week on September 21. Four-D College has two campuses, one in Colton another in Victorville. The location in Colton is now being called California Career College, school officials have declined to say whether the new school is affiliated with Smith. “Many may not see what or why do this,” Ruan posted on her Facebook. “I feel like we need to show our families what is right is right and what is wrong is wrong. No matter which way you look at this, it is wrong.”

Keep Medications Away From Little Hands

A

pproximately 60,000 young children are brought to the emergency room each year because they got into medicines that were left within reach. Are all of the medicines in your home stored safely? Any medicine or vitamin can be dangerous if taken in the wrong way or by the wrong person, even medicine you buy without a prescription (known as over-the-counter medicines). Walk around your home and find the best place to store medicines up and away and out of sight of young children. Never leave medicines out on a kitchen counter or at a sick child’s bedside, even if you have to give the medicine again in a few hours. Always put every medicine and vitamin away every time you use it, including those you use every day. Make sure the safety cap is locked. Always relock the safety cap on medicine bottles. If the medicine has a locking cap that turns, twist it until you hear the “click” or until

you can’t twist anymore. Remember, even though many medicines and vitamins have safety caps, children may be able to open them, so store all medicines up and away and out of sight. It’s important to teach your children what medicine is and why you or another caregiver must be the one to give it to them. Never tell your children medicine is candy, even if they don’t like to take their medicine. Always remind guests to keep purses, bags, or coats that have medicines in them up and away and out of sight when they’re in your home. Program the national Poison Help number, 1-800-222-1222, along with other emergency-contact numbers into your cell phone.

A staging area? America’s storage unit? Is the narrative we’re writing one of approving project after project without regard for future environmental impacts, or reliance on one sector - one that has traditionally produced a proliferation of low-paying, part-time jobs?” There is another narrative of the Inland Empire - it could be considered the counter narrative of our region. Present at Assembly member Brown’s Summit was Aaron Hake, who serves as Planning Commissioner for Riverside County’s District 2. Just last week he proposed new policy amendments to the county’s General Plan to better mitigate the impact of goods movement on the economy and quality of life, not just in Riverside County but throughout the region. “Our communities deserve to be more than a loading dock,” he said after the policies he

drafted were accepted 4-0 by his colleagues on the commission. “These policies seek a regional, public-private collaborative approach to ensure we plan for the future, that we aim high and seize our destiny before it seizes us.” “We need projects,” he continued, “that contribute to a higher vision of what we want our communities to become.” So if the ever present train whistle that became the soundtrack for my day is a figurative warning, alerting us that danger is approaching, then we should follow the lead of policymakers like Mr. Hake and write a futuristic narrative where the air is clean and the jobs pay a living wage...and our landscape doesn’t resemble a giant field of trucks, trains and massive warehouses. Render To Caesar The Things That Are Caesar’s

I

n the book of Mark 12:17 and Matthew 22:2022 the authors tell us of a situation where the Pharisees tried to entangle Jesus up on his talk on the issue of paying tribute to Caesar the King. Now Hardy L. Brown Jesus, being all-wise to their scheme, used wisdom in His response saying, bring me a coin. He then asked whose image is on the coin and what does the inscription say? The Pharisees responded, Caesar. Jesus then said “render to Caesar that which is Caesar’s and unto God that which is God’s.” Now we have a situation in Kentucky where Kim Davis, an elected county clerk, is objecting to issue marriage certificates to citizens of the same sex if they want to get married. The United States Supreme Court has upheld the supreme law of our nation that it is legal for them to do so. Davis, as the elected clerk in that county of Kentucky, swore an oath to execute the law of the land regardless of her religious beliefs. She even went to jail for not issuing marriage licenses to same sex couples. The judge released Davis after several days and instructed her to

not interfere with the staff in issuing marriage licenses to anyone seeking that service from the government. Now Davis is seeking an exemption to accommodate her from having her name on the legal document. She sought out the office of the county clerk, which requires her by law to sign all legal documents issued in that county office.

In order for that to happen the legislature in Kentucky would have to change the law and give that responsibility to someone else and the governor has said that will not happen. So what should Davis do, being in the pickle that she has gotten herself into? She can hold on to her beliefs and job but not interfere or alter any procedures that would deny people of the same sex from obtaining the legal service from her office, if she does not want to return to jail. I taught Bible classes for over 40 years and the teachings of Jesus are about faith, belief, and practical living for people in a government run society. In my opinion, Davis decided to work for the government while not wanting to render to the government that which is the government’s but force her belief on the public she swore to serve. We have seen this Bible movie in America before and Blacks were the targets. It is also my opinion that some Republican Party candidates are fueling the fire by tossing racial and antigay and lesbian words into the public like a sports game. If the Republican leadership does not step in and be more inclusive and tolerant of people of different faiths and color, they will become irrelevant in this democratic government. To Kim Davis I offer this advice, render to the government that which is the government’s.

Tarnished H.E.R.O.

I just saw this article NOW… that your AWESOME, PHENOMENAL, BRILLIANT AND COULD NOT HAVE ASKED FOR A BETTER REPORTER wrote about the HERO Program. I can’t say enough about Ms. Williams remarkable analysis…and spectacular writing about the in’s and out’s of this government program. Ms. Williams spoke, in my opinion, about the truth in such an unbiased way..it gave the reader the chance to “BE THE JUDGE”; in essence, determine for themselves, whether or not the HERO Program, is in fact, a program for the people …or against the people; by the people…or by government crooks. Thank you VOICE for being my voice…when I couldn’t find the words to eloquently and so professionally communicate “My Truth.” Ms. Williams here’s to YOU for a job well done! Latosha Porter

Making Classrooms Work for All Our Students

T

he most important factor in a student’s success is a great teacher. But in the modern classroom, even great teachers face daunting obstacles. This is a story about what happens when big data meets the “three R’s” - reading, writing, and arithmetic. It’s a story about the recent revolution in Education Technology, and how we in EdTech can help make our education system work for all American students. Kids learn at different speeds and in different ways. A lesson perceived as boring and under stimulating to one student could strike another student as far too complicated to keep up. According to one study, seven out of ten middle and high school students require instruction that is specifically targeted to their strengths and weaknesses. This is partly a function of human nature, but it is also a function of inequality. The first few years of a child’s life are crucial for their development, as they learn to recognize words and numbers by sight and sound. Many children who grow up poor - particularly poor children of color - have fewer books in their homes, less access to good libraries and less access to the Internet. As early as kindergarten, children in the highest socioeconomic level already outperform their playmates in the lowest socioeconomic level by 60 percent. This creates a challenge for teachers: how do you take a class of 20 or 30 students who all

have different home lives, backgrounds and skill sets, and somehow manage to teach them the same material? A new generation of education software is beginning to help teachers answer that question. One of these services is Newsela. Newsela provides teachers with daily news articles from national and local newspapers, written at five different reading levels. The class can discuss the news as a group, and students can earn the satisfaction of moving up a level when they are ready. The software helps struggling students keep up with the class, and allows the brightest students to find engaging material. What Newsela does for reading comprehension, NoRedInk does for writing. The web-based learning engine generates writing exercises and grammar questions for students based on their personal interests - for instance, Harry Potter or Spongebob. The program allows teachers to track students’ growth and progress and adapts questions based on what a student gets right or wrong. Like Newsela, it meets students where they are. On the other side of the academic spectrum is Front Row. Front Row is an online software that generates math exercises for students based on their current skill level. Like Newsela and No Red Ink, it tailors the lesson to students’ needs and automatically tracks progress. The program even reads math questions aloud for ESL students - something that’s particularly

important in light of the fact that by high school, fewer than one out of ten students taking AP Computer Science are Latino. We are entering a new age of Edtech. As Silicon Valley investor Umang Gupta has pointed out, there has Ben Jealous never been a “megabreakout” in the education software space, and only one percent of all education spending right now is on technology. But that is likely to change. Computers and tablets only continue to get cheaper, and broadband access only continues to improve. In an increasingly diverse nation, we need to use all the tools at our disposal - old-fashioned and new - to ensure that schools work for all of our kids. The era of widespread personalized education is rapidly approaching, and social justice-minded entrepreneurs are starting to break the code on how to teach using tech. Ben Jealous is former president and CEO of the NAACP, and Partner at Kapor Capital, a social impact investing firm that invests in EdTech companies including Newsela, No Red Ink and Front Row.

“No”

Those Who Said, By S. E. Williams Staff Writer n recent weeks elected representatives in the cities of Moreno Valley and Perris faced similar challenges and proved equal to the test in the face of controversial votes to approve the development of major warehouse projects in their cities. Riverside and San Bernardino counties have exploded with warehouse developments. Major retailers now have distribution centers across the Inland Empire. They include such retail

I

giants as Amazon, Wal-Mart Stores, Target, Costco, Home Depot, Nike, Kraft Foods, Toys ‘R’ Us, to name a few. Many view these developments as a boon for an area that has struggled economically since the great recession; while critics believe the developments warrant more prudent consideration. In the meantime, as citizens and politicians debate the merits, warehouse developers scramble to lock the area into as many development projects as possible as long as the

warehouse-welcome-sign hangs over the Inland Empire. In Moreno Valley, the World Logistics Center (WLC) was approved despite an epic and contentious approval process. The effort involved recall elections, questionable campaign contributions, a concerning environmental impact report and debatable projections regarding potential jobs. In the city of Perris, the Optimus Logistics Center failed to receive majority approval and was placed on an “indefinite” hold status by the continued on page 12

council. Not surprisingly, concerns in Perris were similar to those expressed in Moreno Valley—potential health/environmental impacts and minimal confidence in job projections. In addition, there were lingering concerns the commercial/retail development phase of the project seemed tenuous and subject to economic vulnerabilities that could derail its future completion as neither financial nor contractual obligations were extracted from the developer to assure its completion. In both instances political observers expected city council members to acquiesce to pressures and vote ‘yes’. The most significant pressure—an unspoken inference to the threat of a well funded political opponent in the next election or recall. They were expected to go with the historical flow, following in the ‘footsteps of approval’ already carved into the landscapes of their cities. However, despite these expectations, in both Moreno Valley and Perris, there are city council members who courageously voted “no”. In a series of exclusive exchanges with The Voice, these council members shared their motivation. Moreno Valley City Council members LaDonna Jempson and George Price voted against the World Logistics Center. Although the development was approved by the majority, their no votes were considered both courageous and insightful. “I voted no on the project because there were too many unanswered questions for me to be comfortable with it,” Price advised. “It seemed like every regulatory agency had problems or issues with the EIR [Environmental Impact Report] that were either not answered or addressed and in some cases ignored.” In

addition, Price explained how he did not think it was wise to place all of the city’s proverbial eggs in one basket by changing zoning on so much acreage and limiting it to warehouse development only. However, his concerns did not end there. “I was also concerned that the City has in the past approved two other specific plans of significant acreage for this developer and he has yet to produce on either one,” Price asserted. They remain raw land and unfulfilled promises. Co-council member Jempson also expressed strong motivation for her “no” vote. Her reservations began with issues related to traffic congestion particularly, “[The] impact of truck trips on our roads with no confirmation of any assistance promised by Cal Trans, Riverside County Transportation Commission, WRCOG [Western Riverside Council of Governments] or the State of California to upgrade our highways.” She also expressed concern about non-designated truck routes coupled with the fact there were no plans for additional truck stops. Her other concerns included the potential impact on air quality. Jempson also felt the development was being pitched with, “unknown tenants with unknown commodities to be warehoused.” In other words, the developer was unable to provide a portfolio of clients who would occupy the facility other than Skechers. Also, according to Jempson, statements from several commenting agencies reflected overriding environmental considerations regarding what was not being mitigated. Finally, “The project was portrayed as State of the Art automation bringing technology jobs but

in actuality there has been no clarification of how many will be built to specify automation.” She explained, “They could all be warehouses similar to the vacant warehouses we currently have. “The developer has also received approvals for other projects which have not come to fruition.” Within a week of Moreno Valley’s vote, the Perris City Council faced an almost identical decision point. Should they cast a vote in favor of the Optimus Logistic Center—two city council members voted “no”. Councilmember and Mayor Pro Tem Tonya Burke explained, “After consulting with our planning staff, considering the recommendations of our Planning Commission, hearing many presentations from the developers, and most importantly, listening to the residents of the city, I felt it was the best decision for me to vote ‘no’ on the project as it was presented to the council.” According to Burke, supporting the Optimus project as presented would require the city to convert a significant portion of the existing parcel of land currently zoned commercial to industrial. One of the most attractive parts of the project, Burke explained, was the retail development component. “The residents were happy to learn that this project would include retail, but disappointed with the idea building the retail portion would take a back seat to building of the two large distribution centers/industrial buildings.” This disappointment was exacerbated when citizens learned it would be four to five years, maybe longer before the retail portion would be built. Her motivation for voting ‘no’ was similar to those expressed by Councilmember David

Starr Rabb. Rabb also expressed concern the city was going overboard on building. “We will be like Detroit, dependent on one industry and when its goes away what will happen,” he asked rhetorically? Rabb expressed concern about developers coming into the area, advocating building projects and then never completing them and/or promising jobs that never materialize. “I’m not anti-warehouse,” Rabb explained (a sentiment also expressed by Burke). He then expounded on the area’s need for more point-ofsale warehouses that would generate additional tax revenue for the city. He also expressed concern not only about the quantity of jobs promised but also the quality. Rabb wants to bring jobs to the area that will offer wages robust enough to sustain a family—he is an advocate for developments that bring jobs with room for advancement and benefits. Such opportunities could include manufacturing, education, corporate and/or green energy jobs. Burke and Rabb, like Price and Jempson in Moreno Valley, were also leery of re-zoning too much of the city’s available land from commercial to light industrial and locking the city into a future too dependent on a single industry. All four of the politicians were humble when commended on their courage and clarity of purpose. Rabb said, “I don’t really think its courage. I’m like Shirley Chisholm, un-bought and un-bossed.” He concluded, “I am a man standing up and saying this is what’s right and voting my conscience based on what the majority of the people I was elected to represent want.” Burke explained, “There seems to be

this push of adopting ‘just good enough’ policies, programs, projects, and employment opportunities within our city. Our constituents deserve so much better. They deserve to have leaders that will make sure that they get the very best.” She added, “I vowed to be a leader that will put the needs of my constituents before my own, even if it causes me to get the ‘side eye’ or not gain campaign funding/support from those who are in opposition to my decisions.” When asked about her courageous no vote, Jempson shared, “I am in this position through the grace of God so I put my trust in Him.” She continued, “I reminded myself that I campaigned based on making decisions which would improve the residents’ quality of life. I received phone calls, emails and posts from several who felt this project would not do that.” Price explained the courage that fueled his ‘no’ vote most precisely, “It was the right thing to do.” He said and added, “Despite what the critics have said, I listened to the voters, especially of District 3 whom I represent, they also shared my concerns.” Environmentalists and government agencies share a number of concerns equal to those expressed by these council members. September 23 was the deadline to legally challenge the project’s environmental impact report and a number of environmental groups have vowed to join forces to facilitate such a challenge. In the meantime, several government agencies, just as determined to push back against the project’s approval are not waiting. On Tuesday, September 15, the Riverside County Board of Supervisors cast a unanimous

vote to sue Moreno Valley over both traffic and air pollution concerns. The very next day, the Riverside County Transportation Commission voted 20 to 1 in a closed door session to sue Moreno Valley. Its concerns were also focused on traffic and air pollution. (The Riverside County Transportation Commission (RCTC) includes representation from the County Riverside and cities.) RCTC, Caltrans, the South Coast Air Quality Management District who is also suing the city, and other agencies expressed these same concerns throughout the development process; as did surrounding cities in response to the project’s Environmental Impact Report (EIR). According to the EIR, the World Logistics Center would attract nearly 69,000 vehicle trips per day including nearly 14,000 trucks--this equates to more than 2800 vehicles per hour. Although the project calls for another lane to be added to the 60 freeway; improving on/off ramps; and, widening overpasses at three exits in the area of the WLC, both Caltrans and the RCTC have no plans and certainly no funding for such improvements. Also, it appears the agencies have little faith in Moreno Valley city officials who have asserted that plans to pay for the improvements will be determined—although the city has also acknowledged its inability to guarantee any improvements to roadways or freeways outside its jurisdiction. The Riverside City Council also considered but declined to pursue legal action on this issue.

Bruins Avoid Upset

BYU and Former Inland Star Devon Blackmon Almost Upset Bruins UCLA 24 BYU 23 By Gary Montgomery

U

CLA head Coach Jim Mora described Saturday’s win over BYU as “a great game to win because of the way we won it.” I will explain. Given an opportunity, college coaches could easily become politicians. They can put a positive spin on any situation. Example: “This is the kind of game that is really good to win because it helps you later on down the line. There are unseen benefits to this kind of win,” said Mora. Translation: Whew! We dodged a bullet and I hope our players realize that and respond according in the future. After cruising past Virginia and UNLV by a combined score of 71 to 19, the #10 ranked Bruins knew that #19 BYU would be a much tougher challenge. But they didn’t expect to see the offense get pushed around like it did. Josh Rosen struggled most of the game. After starting the season like an experienced veteran, UCLA’s young signal caller reminded everyone that he is a freshman. Rosen was 11 of 23 for 103 yards and 3 interceptions. Ouch.

Former Fontana Summit Star Devon Blackmon leaves the field on Saturday after BYU’s 24-23 loss to the Bruins at the Rose Bowl. Blackmon has become an integral part of the BYU offense as a receiver and kick return specialist. Photo by: Robert Attical

It is relative standard operating procedure to gradually ramp up the competition leading into conference play. It’s a proven strategy, so then that end Mora comments are sincere. Getting to conference play unbeaten is a win. The Cougars are physical bunch with a huge front line, a 22-year old freshman quarterback and great speed at the skill positions. One of those

Raihanah Medlock, a junior at Grand Terrace High School in the Colton Joint Unified School District, electrified the audience with her impassioned speech regarding education. State of Education Address, continued from page 4

the Morongo Unified School District, where the students spoke how their school became a statewide model continuation site. Students from Carter High in Rialto Unified, Etiwanda in Chaffey Joint Union and Hesperia High in Hesperia Unified also did video segments on taking part in the first-ever countywide Student Advisory Panels. Providing support for social and emotional needs of students was highlighted by Alejandre, who talked about County Schools’ new Wellness Initiative, as well as the annual Wellness Conference that has attracted more than 500 participants. “Not only is wellness a critical component to academic achievement in the classroom, it’s an essential factor for staff who enrich the educational environment for students,” Alejandre said. In the classroom, Alejandre thanked teachers and recognized their passion and dedication to students, especially among County Schools’ programs in alternative, juvenile court, preschool and special education.

Alejandre also provided updates on the state’s Local Control Funding Formula and its supporting model with eight state priority areas in the Local Control Accountability Plan, as well as the just released data from the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress. Alejandre closed his speech talking about the unique processional San Bernardino High School uses during its graduation in the spring. “A kindergarten class led the procession,” Alejandre said. “The school principal told me, “We want the students to know, at the beginning of their educational career, that they will graduate as Cardinals.” He said the moment creates a powerful message for students and families. “Going to college, landing a great job, these are the hopes and dreams to which all of our students should have the opportunity to aspire,” he said. “This is what we can and should expect of them; and of ourselves. “This is how we transform lives.”

speedy receivers is Former Fontana Summit’s Devon Blackmon who has become an integral part of the Cougar’s game plan. So it is no surprise that the Cougars put up a good fight. But what was surprising and also should be a little disturbing for UCLA is the meager numbers posted by the Bruins’ offense. With the exception junior tailback Paul Perkins, the Bruins’ offense didn’t have much to add up at the end of the evening. Perkins rushed for 219-yards on 26 carries and 1 touchdown and basically saved the day for UCLA. I get Mora’s explanation and to a certain extent agree with much of his overly positive analysis. But reality has a way of breaking through no matter how much brightly colored paint you put on the situation. Your quarterback is a freshman and good defenses will continually attempt to capitalize on his inexperience. With Rosen struggling, UCLA played most of the game from behind torturing the 67,612 fans in attendance. But with only 6:23 left in the game and trailing 23-17, the Bruins offense studied itself and pulled of a scoring drive to take the lead at 24-23. The Cougars were not finished yet. With less the 3:00 remaining Tanner Magnum completed passes to multiple receivers including Former Fontana Summit’s Devon Blackmon moving the Cougars just short of field goal range. On his next attempt Magnum’s pass was intercepted by Myles Jack ending the Cougars chances and keeping the Bruins undefeated. UCLA travels to Arizona this week to begin conference play against the Wildcats. If Mora’s wishful assessment is correct, the Bruins’ more talented squad will prevail and get off to a great conference start. But, if the Wildcats are successful in exploiting (and you can bet they will try) Rosen’s inexperience prepare yourself for a new even more positive story. Gary Montgomery can gmontgomery@att.net

Big Trouble in Troy

Stanford’s Offense Roughs Up Trojans’ Defense STANFORD 41 USC 23 By Gary Montgomery VOICE Sports tanford coach David Shaw had a simple plan of attack against USC on Saturday evening. It wasn’t overly complicated, crafty or particularly original. In fact, it was basically a replay of the same plan he has used in 2011 and 2012 when the Cardinals wrapped up 4 year sweep against the Trojans led by Andrew Luck the NFL’s 2012 overall first round draft pick. After a four year slide the Trojans had a resurgence narrowly winning the last two meetings by a combined total of 6 points. But Stanford had had enough and forced 78,306 fans to watch the USC defensive get exposed in its conference debut and lose big to the Cardinals. Stanford is USC’s oldest opponent dating back to 1905. Although USC holds an appreciable advantage in the series at 60-30-3, in recent years I find the Stanford game to be a kind of informal barometer for USC’s potential season success. Particularly when the two teams meet early in the season. Although the game is not typically recognized as a rivalry, the smart guys from the Bay Area are always well coached, tough as nails and offensively efficient. The Trojans’ performance against Stanford usually provides some glimpse into their ability to handle the rest of their schedule. The availability of game film to all of their opponents doesn’t help either. That being said, after Saturday’s debacle, the Trojans should be seriously concerned. It was not pretty. Stanford’s offense punished the Trojans’ secondary. USC quarterback, Cody Kessler an early season Heisman hopeful was 25 of 32 for 272-yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. The Trojans’ running game amassed 155 total rushing yards. Not great but overall the offense was solid. USC’s defense couldn’t stop anything Stanford did. “We didn’t execute in so many areas. We lost containment too many times. We loss the edge to a team that runs on the edge. We failed to do any of the things we knew we had to do,” said head coach Steve Sarkisian. Stanford’s redshirt senior quarterback Kevin Hogan was 18 of 23 for 279-yards and no interceptions. Christian McCafferey rushed for 115-yards on 26 carries. Austin Hooper led all Stanford receivers with 79-yards. Although not overwhelming numbers, Hooper’s size was a huge advantage. At 6’4” and 248 pounds, Hooper’s ability to punish the smaller defenders made him almost automatic on third down conversions. Stanford converted 8 of its 12 third down attempts. “We just couldn’t get them off the field,” said Linebacker Su’a Cravens.

Although it’s by means the end, it is never a good thing to lose the conference opener. Even more troubling for USC is its recent inability to pull itself together after an upset. When Stanford shocked the #2 ranked Trojans in 2012, the team tumbled to a 7-6 season record. USC continues with a trip to Arizona State next. Tempe presents some equally bad memories for the Trojans. In 2013, after giving up 62 points to the Sun Devils then head coach Lane Kiffin was dismissed shortly after arriving back in Los Angeles. It’s still early and there is a lot of football left to play but USC had better figure out improve its defense or it’s going to be a long season.
