The Long Night of Arts & Innovation
T
here was a steady stream of people on and around Riverside’s Main Street pedestrian mall last Thursday night. On one block they learned about stem cell research...and Ebola....and Dementia & the Brain. The next block they listened to chamber music...and gospel...and jazz. On one end of the mall, they walked inside the Culver Center and listened to beatboxing...and watched contemporary dancers...and learned about spiders and their amazing silks from a “genius” grant-winning researcher. And on the other end they took abbreviated tours of The Historic Mission Inn Hotel and learned about Frank Miller founder of the hotel and the premier civic leader of his time who was significantly responsible for building the core of the city or heard the tale of Eliza Tibbets a founder of the city responsible for introducing the navel orange to the United States. Her ability to graft, nurture, and grow navel oranges sparked our early citrus industry and produced more money than the California Gold Rush. Sometimes we forget that as a city innovation is in our DNA. For one Autumn night, 10,000 Riversiders weaved through a maze of over 400 exhibitions and performances as part of the city’s Long Night of Arts & Innovation, our newest signature event inspired by our sister city Erlangen, Germany’s Long Night of Science. Erlangen sent a delegation to participate, including Mayor Florian Janik. He was one of the many people I talked to as I explored some of Riverside’s most innovative and creative offerings. From a trio of freshman engineering students at CBU’s Bourns School of Engineering I learned how to observe Newton’s Law of Inertia by watching them film themselves dropping a slinky on a tray of LED lights with a camera that recorded at two thousand frames per second. Another engineering student convinced me to play his very rudimentary video game “Pong” as he explained how long it took to modify certain basic elements, like the color of the screen. He also informed me just how quickly a 3D printer carved the controller I was using to play the game. Then there was UCR Medical School faculty speaking on Tomorrow’s Doctors while RCC STEM faculty participated in the Curious Kids Zone. Moreno Valley College’s Gospel Choir sang on 5th Street while RCC’s Wind Ensemble provided a concert on 9th Street. The seven-hour celebration of creativity in both the arts and sciences reaffirmed my belief that our colleges and universities are some of our region’s most significant assets. I spend quite a bit of time ranting about our problems and challenges, but the Long Night of Arts and Innovation deserves an enthusiastic rave. Events like these are what make our city unique...a place worth the investment of our time, talent, and knowledge. Paulette Brown-Hinds, PhD

alling for a cause to take back our youth by bringing awareness to the affects that bullying has among our kids is the reason why several of the Inland Empire’s finest in the music industry will be coming together. On Saturday, October 17 at Arroyo Valley High School in San Bernardino, AV Lmkr, The Finatticz, Audio Push, The Rejects, and Dirty Birdy will be battling it out on the court for the young ones. According to the National Education Association, an estimated 160,000 students skip school every day in hopes to avoid their aggressors. Bullying statistics also report that 1 out of every 10 students that drop out of school does so because of repeated bullying, and an estimated 64% of students have been bullied but do not report it. Our community will not just be entertained through sports, but they will also be gaining knowledge in a fun and interactive way by getting up close and personal with each celebrity throughout the day. Other special guests include Vvs Vision and 99.1 KGGI. The event will be held from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 at the door. Arroyo Valley High School is located at 1881 W. Mexico over USA 3-2 In North American Rivalry By Josue Castillo VOICE News Sports he stage was set. An iconic venue, the Rose Bowl. A capacity crowd of 95,000 plus. Two great soccer rivalries. The United States against its traditional nemesis, Mexico. Loyal fans from both nations were ready for this one before the tailgates dropped. Ultimately, Paul Aguilar’s goal in the 118th minute of extra time put Mexico ahead to stay. They earned the right to call themselves 2015 CONCACAF Cup Champions. With a 3-2 win over the Americans, Mexico now advances to the prestigious Confederations Cup, to be played in Russia in 2017. The scoring started early in regular time with a goal from Mexico’s Javier Hernandez, better known as ‘Chicharrito’. His poetic attack put Mexico ahead in the 10th minute. This was Hernandez’s first goal against the U.S. since he has played for Mexico’s national team. The

U.S. came back quickly to earn their first goal on a free kick in the 15th minute. U.S Captain Michael Bradley found the head of defender Geoff Cameron, who blasted the ball past Moises Munoz. The crowd remained on their feet more most of this match. Reminiscent of World Cup or Olympic competitions, passion from both nations filled the venue with relentless sound. The match remained tied 1-1 in regulation. CONCACAF rules dictate two additional 15-minute periods of added time, followed by a traditional ‘shootout’ if necessary. Mexico was the aggressive side during the initial 15-minutes of extra time, while the U.S. was a little winded and sluggish. Mexico’s quick persistence paid off in the 96th minute thanks to striker Oribe Peralta. After a long pass into the box, Mexico’s Paul Aguilar managed to clip the ball and pass through to Peralta, whose shot went right through the legs of U.S. defender

Geoff Cameron. U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann reacted by making some changes to bring in the speed of DeAndre Yedlin and striker Bobby Woods. With fresh legs, these two players proved to be just what Klinsmann ordered. The U.S equalizer came in the 118th minute with a nice run from Yedlin, who made a perfectly placed pass to Bobby Woods that found the back of the net. Unfortunately for the Americans, the 2-2 score would not last. Paul Aguilar sealed the victory for Mexico with 2 minutes remaining in the second extra period. Aguilar’s decisive ‘one touch volley’ was a missile that U.S. keeper Brad Guzan could not handle. The Mexicans brought a faster pace, better touches and ultimately executed a better plan against their American opponents. For Mexico, it’s on to the Confederations Cup in Russia. For the Americans, it’s time to think it over.

Building Strong Abs And Pecs Dear Dr. Levister: I am a budding high school baseball player. I experience low back pain when I pitch. I have never been injured. My coach blames the discomfort on weak abdominal and pectoral muscles. Please explain this. Paul B. Dear Paul B: Your coach’s opinion is to be respected however he or she is not qualified to diagnose the source of your back pain. Consult with your team physician, personal doctor or health care professional for a formal diagnosis. The abdominal/stomach and pectorals/ chest are the most notable sets of muscles on the male body and let’s face it, most women love to see chiseled abs and a bulging chest. But having strong chest and abdominal muscles not only helps your appearance, it improves your overall health and athleticism. They are two of the largest muscle groups on the human body and provide most of the power the upper body generates. The chest helps to create the fanning motion used to swing a bat or throw a baseball. In fact, building a strong chest helps improve your fastball. The abdominal muscles come into play with most exercises and movements. But they also connect your sternum to your lower body Spirit of the Entrepreneur, continued from page 5

and help the back muscles support the spinal column, otherwise known as trunk stability. Strong abdominal muscles help support your back muscles and can reduce lower back pain. For athletics or anyone who wants to lose that spare tire around the middle or beef up that bird chest, there are dozens of weight training routines that target your chest and mid section. Exercises like the bench press, pec deck flys, incline press and crunches, the “meat and potatoes” of any abdominal workout, are good for building strong abs and pecs. Invest in a good weight training manual to help you perform these exercises correctly and safely. Weight training alone won’t give you a strong chest or rippling abs. You have to include a cardiovascular workout that will burn fat and a nutritional program based on your eating habits and schedule. But be sure to visit your doctor or team physician before starting any new exercise routine, and consult a fitness trainer to select the right workout for you. Happy Birthday Vincent and Vanester
T
his past Sunday, sixty-two years ago, the Floyd and Essie Brown family was blessed with the birth of twins, Vincent and Vanester who rounded out the number of children to nine. According to Hardy L. Brown Vanester, the youngest of all, she and her brother as adults have never celebrated their birthday together that she could recall. So she wanted to remedy that part of her life. She recently traveled to California just to be with her twin, socialize with the rest of the family, and celebrate. Of course when her sisters heard she was coming they wanted to come as well so Brenda hitched a ride and came along.

However, Vincent spends most of his time here with me serving as my caretaker so during my sister’s visit, she was here at home with me. My family, much like so many other families, look for any reason to get together, eat, laugh, take pictures and reminisce about the past, so my wife said let’s have a party. It did not take too long for the word to circulate to other family members who asked to help and the party was planned. Vincent wanted the family to attend church at St. Paul AME in San Bernardino since our dad had preached there after he was healed from pancreatic cancer. Vanester, the family leader and motivator when it comes to family history and living out the togetherness of legacy, headed up the testimony with song after we blessed the food just before the party began. The rest is history with fond memories being made and many pictures taken.

6th Ward Achievements
F
or the last 12 years I’ve had the honor and privilege to serve the residents of the 6th Ward in the City of San Bernardino. I just want to share some of the achievements that have transpired over the course of my three terms. The completion of the Palm Avenue Bridge, a $23.7 million project, included improvements to Palm Avenue, Industrial Parkway and Institution Road. The bridge eliminated the Burlington Northern Santa Fe train crossing, decreased traffic, air pollution and increased safety. This was the second bridge to be built in the 6th Ward in five years. The State Street Bridge opened to motorists in August 2008. The project cost for the State Street Bridge was $28 million. Both projects, which total almost $52 million in investments in the 6th Ward, would help decrease an estimated 13 tons of carbon monoxide emissions generated every year from drivers that would have been idling behind passing trains at each intersection. These projects were good for the community and good for the environment. I introduced the branding of the Historic Route 66 as it winds its way through the 1st and 6th Ward. This was done by changing the development code to include language to display the Route 66 emblem on all new businesses that open along the Route. Hillwood Investment Properties, a Perot Company, creatively utilized this branding opportunity during the development of the Cajon Business Center as the Route 66 logo is prominently featured on the buildings as well as on the sidewalks. The Cajon Business Center became home to two Fortune 500 Companies, Hewlett-Packard and FedEx. Just down the road in the 6th Ward, Hillwood developed the InterChange Business Center which consists of five green buildings with LEED Silver certification. Michelin Tire and Dollar Tree, two other Fortune 500 Companies, located there. Smucker’s, another Fortune 500 Company, located a new business on Industrial Parkway. These five Fortune 500 companies along with other businesses that located in the business centers brought over 2600 new jobs into the 6th Ward. Anita’s Mexican Foods, a long time Westside staple, relocated to the InterChange Business Center. This move enabled them to expand their business to reach annual sales exceeding $45 million. In the heart of the 6th Ward on the corners of Baseline Street and Mt Vernon Avenue exist four vibrant businesses, an Auto Zone, Walgreens, McDonalds and
an expanded Amapola’s Restaurant, all top earning businesses in their existing chains. At the West Side Plaza on the corner of Baseline Street and Medical Center Drive there exist many successful stores including the recently opened O’Reilly Auto Parts and the soon to be opened Waba Grill. On the corner of Highland Avenue and Medical Center Drive is the best senior complex in the City, the Magnolia at Highland Senior Apartment Complex. In the complex are 80 affordable senior apartment units on 2.4 acres that include lush landscaping, pool and spa area, outdoor fireplaces, barbecue grills, a walking path and multiple seating venues. At Anne Shirrells Park a splash pad was added Rikki Van Johnson to help children cool off in the heat of the summer. SB Councilman A community center will be built at the park early in 6th Ward 2016. At Nicholson Park a fruit tree orchard has been planted. The completion of the I-210 freeway through San Bernardino introduced a new western gateway to the City and the first interchange into the 6th Ward, the University Parkway (State Street) interchange. I partnered with 1st Ward Council Member Virginia Marquez to present the Hometown Heroes Military Banner Program which recognizes active Armed Services men and women. There are over 40 banners proudly displayed in our City with nine more to be introduced in November. I created the Citizen of the Month Program to recognize those residents who volunteer and invest their time and talent to make a positive impact in the community. These two programs have instilled a sense of pride and unity throughout our City of San Bernardino. It has been said that one of the greatest things in this world is the opportunity to be of service to others. I thank the residents of the 6th Ward for allowing me to be a Servant Leader in the City of San Bernardino.

Fed Approves $1.2 Million for Small Businesses in Riverside County By S. E. Williams Staff Writer .S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker recently announced a $1.2 million grant awarded to Riverside County’s Economic Development Agency— good news for small business owners and the community at large. The money will support current efforts by the Riverside County Small Business Financial Assistance Program to make capital available to local small businesses that might not otherwise be able to secure it.
U
The grant, will be allocated through a revolving loan fund and initially provide funding to at least ten local businesses in a way that should help create jobs in some of the more disadvantaged areas of the county. According to the Riverside County Small Business Financial Assistance Program, the grant dollars will be provided to businesses in the form of micro loans of up to $50,000. Typically, these types of loans are very difficult to obtain. Economic Development Administration (EDA) spokesperson Breelyn Pete explained
how the EDA’s revolving loan program, “is designed to support businesses that are unable to get traditional loans from banks or other lenders due wariness over potential risk or market conditions in distressed communities.” The Small Business Administration considers the micro loan program a great option for such entities that need such funding for expansion or start-up. These business owners often have strengths and many have also demonstrated the capacity to repay such loans. Micro loans are only offered in selected communities. continued on page 23

Dr. Michael Nduati Helps Improve Inland Health By Rory O’Sullivan, Staff Writer Photo by Patrick Edgett ichael Nduati, MD grew up on a quiet street in Upland surrounded by vineyards, orange groves and the still, towering trees that line Euclid Avenue. He was a quiet child always observing always watching and learning, either from his father, the statistics professor or his mother, the librarian. His father was born in Kenya and always stressed the importance of education. His dad would tutor his children day and night and drill the information into them on weekends, holidays, summer breaks, whenever his father was able. He wanted to make sure his children gained an education. Nduati, graduated the top of his class earning a 4.6 GPA from Upland High School. He started attending the University of California, Riverside Biomedical Sciences program a year before graduating high school. “I had two fantastic parents,” said Nduati. “My father really drove home excellence in school.” His father’s dream of having his children living better lives than he could have given them in Kenya was coming true. Both would graduate from prestigious universities. All of the hard work, the extra time with the flashcards, the extra readings, the additional math problems in preparation for

SATs, ACTs and MCATs had all paid off. Nduati received his degree in Biomedical Sciences in 2001 and completed a combined MD/ MBA program from the David Geffen School of Medicine and the Anderson School of Management at UCLA. He also completed an MPH degree from Harvard School of Public Health. He currently serves as the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs for UCR’s School of Medicine and a health sciences clinical associate professor of family medicine. Nduati specializes in family practice, and has over 11 years of experience serving patients in the Inland area. In 2014, Dr. Nduati was one of seven family medicine physicians nationally selected to receive the New Faculty Scholar Award from the National Society of Teachers of Family Medicine Foundation. But Nduati always remembers the words of his mother, the librarian, who taught him it wasn’t enough to have knowledge but to pass on that knowledge and use everything he learned to help people. It was her dream that he use his medical training to help his community live long healthy lives. Nduati is an active member of the James W. Vines, Jr. Society, a medical society and foundation, a liaison to UCR’s African Americans United in Science and directs the Elma Vines Summer Health Academy. He is also a mentor physician for the Riverside Free Clinic which

operates a twice-monthly free clinic serving Riverside’s homeless population and others without health coverage. It is for these reasons he was selected as UCR Alumni Association’s 2015 Outstanding Young Alumnus and will be honored this weekend at the annual Chancellor’s Dinner. Since 1986, the award highlights graduates who personify UCR’s tradition of excellence and service. “I feel great. Anytime you get recognized it feels good. It’s definitely something to be proud of,” stated Nduati. Nduati has been with the UCR School of Medicine since it’s inception in 2012. He has been one of the leaders in making sure the school finds patient-centered physicians who have a passion for serving the Inland region. “We’re not just producing medical leaders but also healthcare leaders. We want our students to have a broader understanding of why that person became obese in the first place.” He said if someone growing up is “surrounded” by fast food and liquor stores the best thing to prescribe them might be fresh fruits and vegetables rather than a pill. Nduati has also been influential in recruiting underrepresented groups into medicine. He can remember a lot of “good and caring” medical students when he was going through the program who dropped because of a needleless cap system
which cut a certain amount of students each academic year. “I had a mentor who said ‘you can teach any reasonably intelligent person medicine, but you can’t teach someone to be a good person.’ That’s what we are looking for, good people.” He said the UCR Medical School is focused on serving the needs of the Inland region, a rapidly growing ethnically diverse region that is home to 4.2 million. UCR medical students benefit from hands on instruction in clinical skills from the very first month of school. Nduati is also interested in increasing the number of Black and Latino doctors in the Inland region. That is why even with his busy schedule he still serves as a mentor with UCR’s African Americans United in Science, which he founded as an undergraduate at UCR. Nduati said it’s important to him that the next generation of doctors in the Inland area help the region attain healthy outcomes. He lives in Riverside and has two young daughters who will depend on his future medical students for their health needs. “I really love this community, I’m really invested in the success of this community.” For more information on the Chancellor’s Dinner contact ladonna.ardary@ucr.edu or (951) 827-5667.

espite remarkable advances and a big drop in the prostate cancer death rate, prostate cancer still is the second leading cause of cancer death in men, and African-American men still are at highest risk. Early diagnosis, and effective treatment still is the best defense. As part of their Prostate Cancer Month public service, the Riverside Community Hospital invited the prostate cancer concerned community to a free dinner program to learn about the latest in prostate cancer treatment from two cancer specialists.

If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. Appreciation Service for New Hope’s Dr. Fairley
D
r. Robert Leonard Fairley and the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church family celebrated the 23rd Appreciation Service for Dr. Robert L. Fairley and Sister Mary Fairley this past Sunday. The appreciation service held during all three services recognized Dr. Fairley’s commitment to God, church, and family. The second of six children born to the late Reverend and Mrs. Leonard Earl Fairley, Dr. Fairley grew up in Hattiesburg, Mississippi where he received his elementary and secondary education. He served four years in the United States Navy. Following his discharge from the Navy, Dr. Fairley made his residence in Menlo Park, California. Dr. Fairley received his call to the ministry in 1959 and was ordained by the late Reverend James Branch in 1962. He is a third generation gospel preacher. After more than fifty years in the ministry, Dr. Fairley will be retiring from service but will remain steadfast in service to God’s will. Dr. Fairley married the former Mary Ann McFadden in 1962 and they are the parents of Feds Approve $1.2M, continued from page 7
Guidelines regarding how micro loans can be utilized by small business owners are fairly broad. The loans can be used as working capital; to fund start-up costs; or, to purchase and/or repair equipment among other reasons. The eligibility requirements are reasonable. Small business applicants already in business must be established for at least two years with a positive cash flow; have reasonable credit and/ or the ability to provide acceptable explanations for any derogatory marks; have collateral equal to the loan amount or a co-signer with reasonable credit and income sufficient to repay the loan; he/she must also have a minimum of two years experience in the industry. Applicants seeking micro loans for startup businesses must have two years experience in the industry; must be positioned with enough capital to accommodate 30 percent of the project; have reasonable credit; have a secondary source of repayment in the form of collateral equal to the amount of the loan or a co-signer with reasonable credit and income
four children: Dr. Fredrick L. Fairley (wife-Tina Marie); Pastor Ralph R. Fairley (wife-Dawn Rene); Mr. Michael V. Fairley; and Mrs. Lori Ann Fairley-Green (husband-Pastor Jonathan Lane Green). Dr. and Mrs. Fairley have 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. sufficient to repay the loan. The applicant must also demonstrate acceptable, historical earnings that are sufficient to cover personal living expenses and provide an acceptable business plan that includes projections and assumptions upon which the projections are based. According to the Small Business Administration (SBA), the length of the loan can be three to five years with the interest starting at prime +4.75 percent fixed. According to the Small Business Administration, the average small business micro loan is about $13,000. Part of what may aid in the program’s success is the micro loans are provided through “specially designated intermediary lenders, which are nonprofit community-based organizations.” The nonprofit lenders are purportedly experienced in lending as well in the provision of management and technical assistance. The SBA also requires everyone who borrows through this program to receive technical assistance and/or business counseling after the loan is funded. Such support is available through
the nonprofit lender and/or the SBA.
