10 Facts All Men Should Know About Prostate Cancer By Travis Marshall

Prostate issues are a normal part of getting older for many men. Hormonal changes cause enlarged prostates in almost 90 percent of men by the time they turn 80. But while an enlarged prostate can be uncomfortable, it’s prostate cancer that men should be most concerned about. Here Sumanta Kumar Pal, M.D., medical oncologist and assistant clinical professor Department of Medical Oncology & Therapeutics Research at City of Hope shares 10 important facts every man should know about prostate cancer. 1. It’s more common than you think Prostate cancer is the most common type of non-skin cancer among men, according to the National Cancer Institute, and the second leading cause of death by cancer in men, after lung cancer. The Prostate Cancer Foundation says that 3 million American men are currently living with prostate cancer, and more than 27,000 die from the disease each year. 2. It can be cured—if caught early “One of the biggest misconceptions about prostate cancer is that it’s a relatively benign, slow-growing cancer,” Pal explained. “With early detection, the cure rate for prostate cancer is almost 99 percent. But that number drops significantly in more aggressive cancers or once it has metastasized.” This underscores how vital screening and early detection are for saving the lives of men with prostate cancer. 3. You might need early screening

6. Screening tools are getting better There’s been a lot of debate over the years about the tools used to screen men for prostate cancer. Tests measuring the levels of prostate specific antigen (PSA) only show that something unusual is happening with the prostate, not that a patient has cancer. And the standard biopsy for prostate cancer takes samples from a fixed pattern around the organ rather than pinpointing specific tumors. Pal says City of Hope has improved diagnostic tools for prostate cancer, including MRI-guided biopsies to target specific tumors. He’s also currently working on a clinic trial for a test that may detect early-stage prostate cancer cells in the blood. “With the very high sensitivity of the test, we were the first to detect circulating tumor cells in patients with localized prostate cancer,” Pal said. “This could really improve our ability to define a patient’s prognosis.” 7. Prostate cancer doesn’t always require surgery or treatment Once a man is diagnosed with prostate cancer, the aggressiveness of the cancer is determined using a tool called the Gleason Scale. Prostate cancer with a Gleason score of 6 or less is considered low risk, 7 is intermediate and 8 to 10 is high risk. For those with low-risk cancers, there’s a good chance the cancer will grow so slowly that they won’t need treatment in their lifetimes. Instead of treatment, the doctor may recommend active surveillance: regular PSA tests and biopsies to make sure it doesn’t get more aggressive. 8. Consider the long-term effects of treatment

Because early detection can have such a large effect on a patient’s outcome, experts like Pal suggests that men talk with their doctor and get a personalized assessment of when they should start screening rather then simply getting the standard exam at age 50. Depending on family history and other risk factors, starting screening as early as age 40 may be the right choice.

You and your doctor should consider the potential long-term effects of treatment and weigh them against the aggressiveness of the cancer. A study in the New England Journal of Medicine looked at data from the Prostate Cancer Outcomes Study (PCOS) and found that 15 years after surgery or radiation treatment for prostate cancer, a significant number of the men had experienced either sexual dysfunction, problems urinating, or both—issues that can significantly reduce a man’s quality of life.

African-American men have the highest risk for prostate cancer of any American males, while Asian-Americans have the lowest risk in the country. For the entire U.S. male population, one in seven get prostate cancer, but that number is one in every five for African-American men. Not only are African-Americans more likely to get it, but they are also 2.4 times as likely to die from it, according to the Prostate Cancer Foundation. That’s why City of Hope recently launched a new initiative to educate African-American men about this risk, and encourage them to seek early screening and treatment.

Every man is different, so the treatment plan for each case of prostate cancer is determined on a case-by-case basis. Treatment could require a surgical procedure to destroy the tumors or remove the prostate. It may also include radiation, chemotherapy, hormone treatments, or immunotherapies. Or your doctor may recommend a combination of these.

5. There are symptoms, but they’re not definitive The symptoms of prostate cancer, if there are any, are often symptoms that can be attributed to other things, like prostatitis. These could be things like needing to pee frequently or having trouble controlling the urine stream, as well as sexual issues like erection dysfunction or painful ejaculation. Check with your doctor if you experience any of these, but don’t wait to experience them before getting screened for prostate cancer.

Lifestyle changes might help—but it’s not a magic cure Some studies show there could be a link between lifestyle factors like diet and obesity and increased rates of prostate cancer, though age, family history and race remain the most significant risk factors. The best lifestyle changes men can make to improve their prostate health are ones that improve overall health: quitting smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, and eating a diet that is high in fruits, vegetables and whole grains, and low in red meats and full-fat dairy products.

ast week I was forwarded a text by a voter in the 47th Assembly District, which happens to be the district my mother has served for the last 4 years. And while I normally try not to talk politics when it comes to her campaigns, the outrageous claims and lies made by her opponent (a person who has known her for decades and has known just how committed she is to the community), couldn’t be ignored. Anyone who attempts to paint my mother as a corrupt politician knows they aren’t simply bending the truth, they are snapping it in half, burying both pieces, and replacing it with a complete fabrication. The claim would be comical if it weren’t so insidious. I understand how political operatives work, but when the candidate herself is the protagonist in the farce I have to question why she really wants the position as well as what kind of legislator she would be if elected. Then I saw more duplicitous campaigning from another candidate that I didn’t expect. She’s a local school board member running for state assembly in the 40th Assembly District. She’s a Democrat running against a Republican and decided as part of her campaign strategy to create yard signs with Trump’s name and her opponent’s name together as if on one ticket. She then had those signs distributed throughout the district she wants to represent. I thought, perhaps a consultant from an independent expenditure committee was behind the scheme (that seems like something a political operative who is just concerned about winning would do believing it’s a clever political play) but it was actually the candidate’s campaign. However, it backfired when the Trump for California Committee sent her a thank you letter for being his largest in-kind contributor and her opponent shared the letter on social media. Now I’m wondering what kind of legislator she would be if elected. These local examples and the entire negative campaign climate at the national level caused me to think about the process of campaigning and the nature of politics today. It also prompted me to reflect on campaigning and how it really is an audition for the role of public servant. So if it is an audition, what does it mean when candidates knowingly lie, stretch the truth, or resort to devious tricks to win the role? Augusto Boal, the Brazilian theatre practitioner, politician, and founder of Theatre of the Oppressed often compared politics to the art of theatre. He referred to it as the “sovereign art” and after living for years in exile he returned to Rio de Janeiro and successfully ran for city councilor as a theatrical act to prove his theory. And as a public servant he worked with the people he served to craft and pass laws and important legislation. Politics is more than spectacle; in his world the roles are real. When we cast our votes we are selecting the best actor for that role. And for the role of public servant, I would argue, good character is one of the most important attributes. Children’s Exposure to Electronic Media

The American Academy of Pediatrics has modified its recommendation regarding the use of electronic media for children under the age of two years. Beginning in 1999, the organization discouraged parents from allowing such young children to be exposed to electronic media; however, the agency recently lifted that recommendation and instead acknowledged that some media exposure to highquality programming can have educational value for children as young as 18 months. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) specifically referenced “Sesame Street” and children’s programming provided by PBS as an example of such programming. AAP also stressed that parents should watch these programs with their children and refrain from using the programs as electronic babysitters.

California Rejects Federal Push to Administer Old Science Tests

Sacramento - California education officials recently decided the state’s students will only be required to take only one standardized test in science this year—a test designed by California. This decision was contrary to a written directive by the U.S. Department of Education in September, which advised state officials that California must continue to administer the older science exams based on standards adopted in 1998, and publish the scores on those tests. However, California adopted new science standards in 2013, and state educators planned to administer a pilot version of a new online test aligned with those standards this spring. The state requested an official waiver from federal officials to do so but its request was denied. In lieu of this denial, the California Department of Education’s Assessment Development and Administration Division determined the state will continue to move forward with its plans to replace the old federal test with the California pilot test this spring. The pilot science test will be administered to students in the 5th and 8th grades along with one high school grade this school year.

Less Debt for Graduates of California Colleges

Oakland - A new study completed by the Institute for College Access & Success based in Oakland recently revealed that graduates of California colleges and universities finish school with some of the lowest average debt loads in the nation. According to the report, this is primarily the result of liberal financial aid and the relatively low costs associated with attending schools in the California State University system. Nationally, 68 percent of those who graduated college or university in 2015, incurred education debt—their average amount of debt was $30,100; by comparison, California graduates had loan totals that averaged $22,191. Only Utah and New Mexico had lower statewide totals at $18,873 and $20,193 respectfully.

Nurses Claim Desert Regional Medical Center Grossly Understaffed Palm Springs

I

n recent weeks the Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs has garnered international attention. On October 9th, the facility was highlighted by the media for its role in handling the remains of two beloved Palm Springs police officers and administering care to a third. The officers were shot as they responded to a domestic violence call in the city.

Then, on October 23rd, the Desert Regional Medical Center (DRMC) staff once again responded to a catastrophic event when early that Sunday morning a tour bus with fortythree passengers, including the driver, slammed fifteen feet into the back of a big rig on Highway 10 near Palm Springs. The tour bus was headed back to Los Angeles from the Red Earth Casino near Salton Sea Beach. The accident left 11 dead and 30 injured. DRMC received and cared for most of the patients—including the most critically injured. Little did the community know during the recent times of crisis that DRMC, the area’s only trauma center, was operating under a cloud of disturbing accusations. In an alarming document obtained by the Desert Sun and reviewed by The Voice/Black Voice News, nurses who work at the Desert Regional Medical Center put the facility’s management on notice regarding allegations of ‘unacceptable patient care

practices.’ A letter from the nurses dated October 5th and submitted by their representative, the California Nurses Association, stated in part that there were several practices at the DRMC they considered unacceptable for the safety of their patients and which also impeded their ability to provide quality patient care. “On a daily basis,” the letter continued, “there are compromises in patient care promoted by these conditions that put our professional ethics in conflict with DRMC’s management of this hospital.” The letter went on to describe in detail a list of urgent concerns the nurses felt must be fixed to ensure what they defined as the highest quality of care. The disturbing communications was one more action in a growing list of actions taken by the nurses at DRMC, which also included two lawsuits and several complaints to state labor regulators. Kindness is Good for You

M

aya Angelou said, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Kindness can be a smile across a room to someone you see feels nervous and out of place, it can mean a few minutes of your time to talk to the guy who

lives on the street that is invisible to the average passersby. It can mean a practical helping hand or mentoring someone through college or their career. In fact the act of kindness – whether it’s just a smile, a word or when you do something practical is all about taking action and when you do, something wonderful happens. Perhaps the hardest type of kindness is being kind to yourself – have you noticed how much more forgiving we are to others and yet so unforgiving of ourselves. We call this the ‘special person syndrome’. If it’s o.k. for another then why do you see yourself as being so special it isn’t for you? Those who work together using their kindness to co-operate for the well-being of others bring about major changes. Kindness does not mean

you cannot be assertive. Have you ever seen a lioness fight to protect her cub – you wouldn’t want to stay around! Psychologists, Sociologists and academics say that we do this to ensure the survival of our family line and communities being programmed into our genes. Kindness, gratitude and compassion are also good for your mental and physical health. Small random acts of kindness make you feel good about yourself and individuals find they often get something unexpected back in return. You find yourself gaining friends or getting an email one day from someone who remembers you and wants to offer you a job. You may even have forgotten the name of the person but they have not forgotten you. You also get a sense of personal satisfaction which many describe as a greater gift than the act is for the other person. The happier you are the better your immune system and your ability to withstand stress. Kindness is good for you emotionally and psychologically and may be better than all the vitamin pills you can take.

Riverside County Escapes $1 Million Lawsuit Related to Dorner Reward Los Angeles

A

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge dismissed all claims filed by a local camp ranger against Riverside County; the cities of Los Angeles and Irvine; and the law firm of Richards, Watson & Gershon. The lawsuit was filed by camp ranger Richard Heltebrake who believes he is entitled to all of the more than one million dollars in multiagency reward money. Heltebrake has alleged it was his call to 911 that eventually led sheriff detectives to the location of fugitive Christopher Dorner. On Feb. 3, 2013, Dorner a 33-year-old Navy reserve officer reportedly gunned down the daughter and future son-in-law of an ex-police captain who represented him at a Board of Rights hearing. This action began a crime spree by Dorner and resulted in a manhunt that lasted ten days.

The manhunt came to a violent conclusion when Dorner was found hiding in a cabin in the unincorporated community of Angelus Oaks near Big Bear in the San Bernardino Mountains. Dorner succumbed to a self-inflicted gunshot wound during a shootout with San Bernardino County sheriff deputies. San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Detective Jeremiah MacKay was also fatally shot during the gun battle. The recent ruling by Judge Fahey disengaged Riverside County, Los Angeles and Irvine as well as the above named attorneys from the tangled conflict over who is entitled to the reward money. The reward money remains in dispute—a dispute some claimed was further exacerbated in 2013 when a three judge panel appointed to make a final determination about the Dorner reward found that 80 percent of the money

should go to Karen and James Reynolds, who were bound and gagged by Dorner in their Big Bear cabin; 15 percent should be awarded to Daniel McGowan, a ski resort employee who found Dorner’s burning truck; and that 5 percent should be awarded to tow truck driver, R.L. McDaniel who spotted Dorner’s truck in Corona earlier in the manhunt; nothing, however, was awarded to Heltebrake for his report to 911. According to the judges, Heltebrake, was not entitled to any of the money. A little more than a year ago, another three judge panel, this time of the Second District Court of Appeals, unanimously reversed the dismissal of all of Heltebrake’s claims to the rewards. Fahey’s recent decision leaves Heltebrake free to pursue his claims against the Reynolds and McGowan for a share of the Dorner reward monies.

Why We Must Vote

agazine editor and drama critic George Jean Nathan once said, “Bad officials are the ones elected by good citizens who do not vote.” This election cycle, some potential voters have expressed apathy about the political process and are discouraged from voting for a variety of reasons that range from the integrity of the presidential candidates; to the relentless negativity of the presidential campaign; to the influence of money in politics; to frustration over gerrymandered congressional districts; and the list goes on. The issue of America’s electoral apathy is neither surprising, nor is it unprecedented. Consider this—in 2008, a larger percentage of eligible voters participated in the American presidential election than the nation had experienced in forty years; and still more than 40 percent of the country’s eligible voters did not vote. The lack of voter participation in America is certainly incongruent with the country’s founding principle as a nation—of, by and for the people. This is particularly

true when one considers most Americans view voting as a sacred right of citizenship and a civic responsibility; however, voting is certainly not compulsory even though there is little question, higher voter turnout makes democracy more representative of the people. 2016 is a presidential election year—a time when voter turnout is historically higher than it is during off-presidential election cycles. During a presidential election year, a vote can mean so much more than merely a presidential preference. During every election cycle there are many important reasons to vote. For example, a president’s ability to move forward on his or her political agenda is largely determined by who controls either the U.S. Senate, the U.S. House of Representatives, or both. Even when a candidate one seriously dislikes is elected, voting can make a difference in the candidate’s margin of victory—expanding or contracting the size of their mandate. A very limited mandate can force some elected officials who lean either too far right or too far left, to adopt more moderate policies. This is may be

Who controls the presidency and/or Senate will play a key role in the nomination and approval of future Supreme Court Justices. Who controls the presidency and/or the legislature will also determine important issues related to war and peace, the environment, the economy, Social Security, Medicare and Healthcare, etc. Also voters who may feel apathetic about casting their ballots are encouraged to consider the old maxim, “All politics are local.” This year, the breadth of California’s ballot measures is expansive and equally as important, as are a number of local measures. They will impact everything from the availability of recreational marijuana; to school construction and modifications; to an increased cigarette tax; to revisions to the criminal justice system and the administration of the death penalty, just to name a few. Late last week, the Public Policy Institute of California gave a glimpse into the state’s projected ballot outcomes; however, every vote yet to be cast will be important to every candidate and every ballot measure—voting is the only way to adequately reflect the will of the people in the inland region on these important issues. The poll showed Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton led Republican candidate Donald Trump 54 percent to 28 percent. Attorney General Kamala Harris led U.S. Representative Loretta Sanchez, 42

percent to 20 percent in their contest to be the state’s next U.S. Senator. In addition, the poll showed Proposition 64, the measure to make recreational marijuana legal was ahead with 55 percent in favor and 38 percent opposed. The poll also showed majorities favored measures to extend a tax on high incomes (Proposition 55); increase cigarette taxes (Proposition 56); and bonds to fund school construction projects (Proposition 51). The local and statewide propositions, measures and candidates on this year’s ballot will have a significant impact on the day to day lives of Californians—an important reason to exercise your right to vote. America is recognized globally for its fierce protection of democracy and the rights it is designed to preserve; but the country also carries the shame of continuously managing to produce the lowest voter turnout of all of the industrialized, democratic nations in the world. It is possible this year’s presidential campaign is destined to produce similar lackluster voter participation results unless the threatened voter apathy can be transformed into voter enthusiasm and participation at the polls. Sixty-eight percent of Californians approve of the job President Obama is doing and yet at least 50 percent believe the country is headed in the wrong direction. This, is addition to the low opinion 69 percent of Californians have of Congress may help explain the nagging sense of political apathy experienced by so many this year. Because California boasts the nation’s biggest economy, largest population, and economists have projected its economic growth will continue to outpace the rest of the nation over the next five years. The UCLA Anderson Forecast released in September 2015, looked at projected job growth in Southern California and according to the report, the fastest job gains in the state through the year 2020 are expected to occur in the Inland Empire—making the inland region an important constituency not only in the state but the nation as well. Often, what happens in California lays a foundation for change in the rest of the nation. For example, California was the first to regulate vehicle exhaust by setting limits on hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide emissions and California set the nation’s first air quality standards—both issues that continue to play an important role as the nation grapples with concerns related to climate change. These are just a couple of examples of the important role California plays in shaping policy. What California voters decide is important whether they are electing candidates to represent them or rules and regulations to guide behaviors. With so much at stake this election, citizens are reminded that in order for democracy to work, voters must participate in the process. Those tempted to stay away from the polls are encouraged to remember the words of American storyteller Louis L’Amour who said, “One who does not vote, has no right to complain.”

November 8th is rapidly approaching, early voting is underway and one can almost catch a whiff of scorched earth in the air as the contest between this year’s two major party candidates for president races toward the finish line. The shortcomings, strengths, and weaknesses of each candidate have been explored by talking heads and extolled by Pulitzer-prize winning reporters ad infinitum; however, much less attention has been given to comparing and contrasting their policy positions. For readers who remain undecided, following is a bullet point summation of each candidate’s position on six policy issues important to Inland Empire voters. Donald Trump

Key School Measures Face Limited Opposition Sacramento

T

his year, three statewide ballot measures that historically would have ignited aggressive political debate, have raised lots of financial support and barely provoked a whisper of opposition. The measures include Propositions 51, 55 and 58, which have raised millions of dollars in campaign donations to fight against anticipated opposition that has barely materialized. Proposition 51, would authorize the State of California to sell $9 billion in general obligation bonds for school construction and modernization. According to the Cabinet Report, a nonprofit source of news in education, the proposition has attracted nearly eight million dollars in campaign donations, most of it from home developers who are concerned the burden to pay for any new classrooms would shift to the building industry if the bond is not approved. This year, The Voice reported on

ongoing disagreements between the state and the building industry on this very issue. Proposition 55, though also focused on education, targets a different source of funding for more general education needs. The Proposition extends the temporary, personal income tax increases passed in 2012 through the year 2030 for earnings over $250,000 for single filers; over $500,000 for joint filers; and more than $340,000 for heads of household. The tax revenues will continue to be allocated for use by K-12 schools; community colleges and healthcare programs. A number of business organizations, including the California Chamber of Commerce, decided against formal opposition to Proposition 55 possibly because of the tax has enjoyed such popular support. The final proposition in this year’s triad of virtually unchallenged school measures is Proposition 58. This Proposition calls for the removal of a nearly ten-year ban on bilingual techniques used to teach English learners—a

recent Field Poll survey revealed that 69 percent of registered voters support the measure. The ban on bilingual education became law in 1998 after a federal court struck down major portions of California’s controversial Proposition 187—a state constitutional amendment passed by voters in 1984 and designed to restrict noncitizen access to public services. This year’s clear support for Proposition 58 is another example of California’s changing demographic landscape. In preparation to fight back against opposition that has failed to materialize, supporters of Proposition 58 have received financial support from several major donors. The California Teachers Association (CTA) has contributed more than $800,000; the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) has contributed nearly $100,000; Blue Shield has donated $20,000; and the California Nurses Association has donated $30,000.
