The Brown Cousins: Then... and Now his year, for the first time, my family celebrated Thanksgiving early. We started Sunday morning at St. Paul AME Church, our family’s church home, for the baptism of two of our newest family members: Carter Wilson and Journee Collins. Our family and close friends filled close to six pews in the small sanctuary. Once we arrived at my parents’ house after the service, our ranks swelled to about 80, primarily family with a few close friends. It was a pleasure to spend time with my extended family. It’s something we don’t do very often as such a large group. It is, however, why the holidays are such a special time. Each year on Thanksgiving we would spend the day at my Uncle Dexter’s house in west Los Angeles. It was a traditional scene: the women in the kitchen, the men watching football, and the children occupying ourselves by playing games, playing outside when the weather permitted, and sneaking a taste of turkey here or macaroni & cheese there. However, before blessing the food and piling it up on our plates, we paused to remember those who came before us, the members of our family who passed on. In a ceremony led by our Aunt Addie (who wasn’t really our aunt, but that’s another story), we would stand in a circle holding hands and take turns saying the name of a family member who died and pour libations to honor their memory. This year, instead of our traditional circle, we gathered around my dad’s computer in much smaller groups and looked at pictures from our past holidays and photos from our family vacations to my father’s home in North Carolina. If we didn’t recognize someone he would tell us who they are and how we are related. It was clearly an important exercise in passing down the family history. While glancing through the hundreds of photos, one in particular caught my attention. It was a photo taken 40 years ago with my cousins: Floyd, Reggie and Jeff, and my sister Lynn Renee. We were bright-eyed kids who no doubt had just finished playing some game running around the house (I can tell from my unruly afro-puffs), and stopped to pose for a picture. I liked the picture because it instantly took me back to a time in my life that was pure joy. And it reminded me why I’ve always liked Thanksgiving. It is a time to not only enjoy family and friends but to reflect on just how much they mean to us. And in honor of that memory, we re-took the picture. Perhaps we’ll all still be here in another 40 years so we can pose once again. This Thanksgiving enjoy your family, enjoy your friends, and remember to give thanks for all the wonderful people who are in your life. I know I will.

Assemblyman Mike Morrell Earns Perfect Marks from California Chamber of Commerce Sacramento

I

n its annual assessment of legislators’ votes during the past year, the California Chamber of Commerce recognized Assemblyman Mike Morrell, R-Rancho Cucamonga, for his perfect record supporting pro-jobs legislation and fighting job killer proposals in 2013. “To return our economy to full strength, we have to get Californians back to work,” said Assemblyman Morrell. “It’s especially important in the Inland Empire, where in many places, the unemployment rates remain well above the state and national averages. The Legislature needs to make job creation a top priority again and stop passing legislation that only slows down economic growth and investment in our communities.” Each year, the California Chamber of Commerce releases an analysis of bills from

the most recent legislative session that are of particular interest to California employers. The 2013 list included 14 measures covering issues regarding civil litigation, economic development, environmental regulation, health insurance costs, and labor and employment mandates. Assemblyman Morrell earned a perfect 14-0 for his votes this year. “I’m proud of my record standing with California’s job creators,” continued Assemblyman Morrell, “and I’m especially pleased that my colleagues and I were able to stop almost every job-killing measure proposed this past year. I look forward to carrying that same resolve into the next session.” Earlier this year, Assemblyman Morrell jointauthored Assembly Bill 1085 with Assemblywoman Beth Gaines, R-Rocklin, that would have helped

ore than 250 students and teachers from Redlands, Yucaipa and other area schools learned about the unique culture and history of Native Americans at the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians’ annual California First Cultures: A Celebration at Crafton Hills (Waa’t). This two-day educational celebration held at Crafton Hills College Nov. 14 and 15 was in commemoration of National Native American Heritage Month and Native American Heritage Day, both of which have been proclaimed by American presidents since 1990, including President Obama this year. The proclamation calls on Americans to commemorate the month of November with programs and activities that recognize indigenous people and provide opportunities to learn about and honor Native American culture and heritage.

“San Manuel is committed to educating the local community on our traditions and culture to gain a greater understanding of what it means to be Native American,” said Carla Rodriguez, chairperson of the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians. “Our annual Celebration at Crafton Hills offers students a glimpse into our history in hopes that they can go home and learn more about their own cultures.” Tribal members, elders and academics from the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, Santa Rosa Band of Cahuilla Indians, Morongo Band of Mission Indians and San Manuel Education Department Serrano Linguists hosted hands-on lessons for students, educating them on aspects of Native American culture including basketry, pottery, music, the Serrano Indian language and history of the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians.

Remembering the Life of Mildred Tyler Riverside

L

ongtime Riverside resident Mildred Geneva Tyler was remembered in a moving ceremony at Allen Chapel AME Church this past Friday. Tyler, 87 was considered a mentor and a role model all could emulate. Born on August 3, 1926, in Luling, Texas, to Tom and Zenobia Cabness, Tyler graduated from Roosevelt High School in Luling, and attended Huston-Tillotson College in Austin, Texas. Tyler moved to Riverside with her husband Will and their family in 1962. She initially volunteered at the YWCA, beginning a career at the University of California, Riverside, in 1967 during which she served as Recruiter/Outreach Officer, Assistant to the Dean of Students, and Executive Secretary for the Associated Student Body. She retired as Assistant Director of Education Opportunity and Student Affirmative Action Programs. Riverside NAACP President Waudier “Woodie” Rucker Hughes said of her friend: “At her 80th birthday celebration I declared that Mildred Tyler could be described this way: A rock, the glue, a Grande Dame, a champion for students and a definite “go-to” person in our community. Our community was enriched by her

Mildred Tyler

presence and made better because she lived and worked amongst us. She will always be fondly remembered and sorely missed.” Tyler was an active member of the National Council of Negro Women, California Highway Patrol Safety Planning Committee, Riverside County Fair Housing Council, City of Riverside Mayor’s Commission on Aging, the African American Historical Society, and was a professional storyteller. Rose Mayes, Executive Director of the Fair Housing Council of Riverside County, Inc. said, “I’ll be forever indebted to Ms. Tyler for mentoring

and urging me to take over the leadership at the Fair Housing Council Agency. She helped me find my life’s passion and I know without her urging I’d gone in a different direction. She was a woman of dignity and grace and was always concerned about poverty, housing, and social justice in our community. She served her family, friends and community well.” As a member of the Allen Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, she served as Secretary, member of the Celestial Choir, Budgeting Committee, and the Sistah’s Club mentoring group. She loved to travel, touring several continents including Europe, Asia, Africa as well as South America. Tyler leaves her children to cherish her memory: Gwendolyn Jones (Charles of Sacramento, CA, James E. Tyler of Rancho Cucamonga, CA, Dwight D. Tyler (Martha) of Riverside, CA, Tommi L. Tyler of Fontana, CA, Douglas L. Tyler (Faith) of Lawrenceville, GA, eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren; her brother Donald G. Cabness of Luling, Texas, Geraldine Cabness (wife of brother James [deceased]), of Luling, Texas, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

“He Said, She Said”

The Power of Communication between Men and Women and how it affects relationships Rancho Cucamonga

By Marla A. Matime ast weekend, Minister Jenise Bush, president of Powerful Praying Wives, presented the Powerful, Praying, Wives, Inc., “He Said, She-said,” seminar at Immanuel Praise Fellowship in Rancho Cucamonga. A video clip of TD Jakes titled, “Women talk in Circles, Men talk in straight lines,” demonstrated the impact women have on their significant other through words and actions. A panel of five men (married and single) provided their opinions, experience and perspectives of how women should approach the man in their lives by answering questions from various audience members who texted their questions to the moderator throughout the seminar. The panelist were Michael Lacy, who is a senior enterprise software manager who believes that a couple should “never let the day go by angry.” Reverend Sam Casey, who has been married for nineteen years, and is a senior pastor of New Life Church, believes that a couple should always show “unconditional respect” towards one another. Reverend Kelvin Simmons, who has been married for twenty years, shared that women as well as men should understand that “submission is not a bad word.” Dr. Lawson Bush V, who has been married for sixteen years is a professor at Cal State University L.A., said “to understand a man fully is to understand yourself.” And Dr. Edward Bush, married for eighteen years, a VP at Riverside Community College believes that a woman should “set an atmosphere to where the man can truly be himself.” Questions asked by the audience ranged from how a woman should approach a man who has been hurt, to should a woman tell a man that he is being too sensitive. The answers from the panel were just as straight forward, if not brutally honest to a degree. Pastor Sam Casey stated in an answer to an audience member that, “it is important to know a man’s history in order to understand what has shaped his life, and the woman will understand how to handle her man’s emotions and reactions to certain situations and behaviors.” Pastor Kelvin Simmons stated that, “women

should get to know themselves first.” He referenced Steve Harvey’s “Think like a Man, Act like a Lady,” by stating that, “a woman should think and act like a lady.” His perspective is that womanhood has been under attack and because of carrying hurts and disappointments from generation to generation, the result has been women, especially in the Black community, carry these hurts and lash out at men because of them.

Dr. Bush stated that the core of a strong community begins with the man and woman. He further stated that women must understand their power and set a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. “A woman should never project what they believe the man should be, allowing him to be who he is will show that she is not inferior or intimidated by him,” he said.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Jump-Start Your Motivation For A Healthy Holiday Season

I

f you’re trying to reach your feel great weight, Thanksgiving can be a very stressful holiday. With so much delicious food tempting you, it’s difficult to keep your healthy habits in check. Who doesn’t pile their plate high at Thanksgiving dinner? If you’re anything like a lot of folks, however, too much splurging on Thanksgiving often sets off a domino effect for the rest of the holiday season. Instead of embarking on a six-week food fest, take control of the day and jump-start your motivation for a healthy and active holiday season—one where you lose weight, not gain! This holiday is a little bit of a challenge for highly health conscious individuals. After all, if you show up to the feast with a dressing-free salad and whole wheat dry rolls, you might be turned away at the door. And, honestly, a once-per-year day of overeating most likely isn’t going to sabotage your diet plans, though sustaining this eating behavior

throughout the holiday season could lead to a lot extra unwanted pounds to lose in the New Year. The good news is that there are some simple changes you can make to your Thanksgiving plans this year that will save you some calories (without sacrificing taste or your reputation) and add some fun to your holiday. Fit it all on one plate. Prevent over-stuffing yourself by fitting your Thanksgiving feast all on one plate (This works best if you don’t use an oversized plate filled to the brim). Sample small portions and avoid going back for seconds. If you’re tempted to return for more, give yourself 20 minutes (about how long it takes to feel full) first. Eat slowly. Thanksgiving foods are likely to be richer and more filling than your everyday fare, so eat slowly and savor every bite. Enjoy the company of family and friends. Socialize during your meal and festivities. You can’t eat and talk at the same time -- so the more

conversation you enjoy, the less you’ll eat. Get moving. Sign up for a local Turkey Trot 5K or 10K and spend your Thanksgiving morning getting some exercise. Not only will you burn some calories, but you’ll also enjoy some holiday fun! From the Levister house to yours, have a blessed, fun, safe and healthy Thanksgiving!

his past Sunday our family gathered at St. Paul AME for the baptism of new members to the Brown, Minter, Wilson, Glanton, Collins and Archie families. The two new members are Carter Wilson and Journee Collins. Afterward we gathered at the house to eat and fellowship with each other. It was a glorious day of sharing stories, discussing politics, religion and reflecting on the family’s history.

Hardy L. Brown

We decided to use this gathering instead of doing it on Thanksgiving Day when the younger generation has several families to visit. I am thankful because of what God has done in my life with ALS/PLS over the past 13 years. It has slowed me down but not stopped me. My most recent project is assembling the family history in pictures. I have traced my bloodline back through parents on both sides to my great, great, grandparents Adonijah McDaniel (b-1815) married to Amy Hill (b-1827) on my father’s side and great grandparents Albert Powell (b-1841) married to

Caroline Mumford (b-1858) on my mother’s side. I will be doing more in this area in order to paint a better picture of our history for the family. The other project I have undertaken is transferring old slides and pictures into a digital format. Many of the photos were taken over the past fifty years. I have been sending them to family members and this past Sunday, I had the opportunity to share them on my computer slide show. Our children and their cousins even recreated a picture they took together forty years ago. Family members sat with me as I showed them photos of the different generations that brought back memories, and started a new conversation to share with their children. I am also uncovering pictures of people from the community as I venture on with this project from the thousands of pictures taken by Cheryl. It was a great day. From our family to yours have a Happy Thanksgiving.

pointofview We Need Immigration Reform Now!

N

ine-year-old Jaime Gordillo Villa was born in the United States and is a good student who has gotten awards for both good grades and behavior. He wants to be a lawyer when he grows up to help immigrants and others who need help. He says he doesn’t want people to suffer for things they didn’t do. His family knows about suffering since coming to the United States to start a new life. Jaime adored his big brother. They studied and played soccer and video games together. But when his brother was detained by immigration officials his family had to spend so much money on lawyers to try to keep him here that they lost their home. And then his brother was deported anyway. Jaime’s afraid his mother or father might be next if they are caught by the police and he might lose them too. He is one of fifty courageous children the Center for Community Change had come to Washington, D.C. on November 14 to share their stories with members of Congress and urge them to pass immigration reform with a pathway to citizenship this year. As the debate on immigration reform continues in Congress, millions of children have so much at stake. One in four children in the United States currently lives in an immigrant family, representing about 18.4 million children. Children of immigrants represent the fastest growing segment of the child population. Immigrant populations are diverse, but many children in immigrant families face significant challenges to their health and well-being, including poverty, lack of health insurance, low educational attainment, substandard housing, and language barriers. Any long term solution to our immigration system must take into account what is best for these children. A recent report from Human Impact Partners (HIP), Family Unity, Family Health, highlights the need to protect children’s rights and keep families together during immigration reform to ensure children’s health. Family-focused immigration reform would result in better child health. Our current immigration policies push families apart and children into illness and poverty. HIP projects that if current policies remain unchanged, 43,000 U.S. citizen children will experience a decline in health status, 100,000 will develop signs of withdrawal, and over 125,000 will go hungry in the next year. Children of undocumented immigrants—the majority of whom are U.S. citizens—will continue to suffer from trauma and fear of deportation which can lead to costly health consequences in their adult lives. The Children’s Defense Fund has joined with many child and family advocates supporting a set of key principles for children we hope Congress and the Administration will incorporate in immigration reform without more delay. Limbo is

VOICEINBOX

a very bad place for children to live. First, we believe there must be a direct, clear, and reasonable pathway to citizenship. Any pathway to citizenship must be open, affordable, safe, and accessible to children in need of status, including beneficiaries of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), undocumented children under the age of 21, and unaccompanied immigrant children. Second, our immigration system must uphold children’s basic human rights and ensure access to critical public services, programs, and economic supports for children and their families. Protecting a child’s human rights should include ensuring children receive legal representation before all immigration authorities and, for all unaccompanied children, the appointment of an independent child advocate from the moment of detention throughout the course of any immigration or other related court proceedings. Third, we need to ensure enforcement efforts have appropriate protections for children. In all enforcement actions, including those along the border, the best interests of the child should be a primary consideration and children must be given the benefit of the doubt during any investigation or detention. There should be appropriate and accountable training policies for interacting with and screening children that reflect a humanitarian and protection-oriented approach, prohibit the use of force with children, and create reasonable and safe conditions for children. Finally, we must keep families together. All policies regarding admissibility, enforcement, detention, and deportation of children and their parents must consider the best interests of children, including enabling immigration judges to exercise discretion in admission and removal decisions based on the hardship to U.S. citizen and lawful permanent resident children. The immigration system must be updated by resolving current backlogs and ensuring family-based immigration channels are adequate for future migration without lengthy family separation. As the youngest and most vulnerable members of our society, every child within our borders should have access to the services and resources they need to survive, grow, and thrive. As our nation’s leaders, hopefully, move forward with the important task of reforming federal immigration laws, I hope they will take into account the unique needs of children. Please urge your member in the House of Representatives to take action on immigration reform that promotes child wellbeing by ensuring families stay together and gives all children the opportunity to grow and thrive. The Senate has acted. The House must vote—now.

Allen Chapel AME Church Serves the Homeless of Downtown Riverside A volunteer’s reflection By Corey Glinsey

E

very Tuesday afternoon, Allen Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Riverside gives back to the community it serves by providing meals for the less fortunate in the area. Through this unique ministry, the church feeds roughly 100+ of the city’s homeless each month but they don’t stop there. Not only does the church nourish their bodies but they nourish their souls as well. Beginning Thanksgiving and throughout the holiday season Allen Chapel expects an even more active ministry. Corey Glinsey, a volunteer for the food ministry, shares the story of not only the ministry, but of Allen Chapel’s mission for the holiday season.

Allen Chapel AME Church has an ongoing ministry to the homeless of Riverside. On Tuesday mornings volunteers from the church prepare and deliver meals to the homeless on the streets and offer words of encouragement and practical help. They begin every Tuesday morning at 8:30 to cook meals prior to serving the homeless. I really don’t like saying that we feed the homeless, I like saying we serve the homeless. I believe you feed cows and dogs and other livestock but human beings get served, no matter what situation an individual may be in. The way Allen Chapel started out feeding the homeless was through an organization called Riverside City Mission. Riverside City Mission goes throughout the

city of Riverside asking churches if they may use their facilities to feed and clothe the homeless. Allen Chapel A.M.E Church opened their doors to Riverside City Mission about two and a half years ago, through Pastor Stephen Pearson. The city mission loved it there, because they felt wanted and accepted by the church. Pastor Pearson used to come out and greet the homeless before he gave his devotions and then served lunch. Pastor Pearson is a “people” pastor, you can tell that just because how he mingled and dealt with the homeless. He often told all of us, “No matter what you’re going through, God is still in control.” After Pastor Pearson departed from Allen Chapel, the city mission also left Allen Chapel. After the city mission left, I stayed on with Allen Chapel to

help with their homeless outreach, even though I still volunteered with Riverside City Mission on a weekly basis. One of the Godly and lovely things about Allen Chapel is that all the food that’s cooked is paid for and provided by the volunteers through their own pockets and labor. The reason I say that is, Riverside City Mission used to get food donated or go to the food bank for their supply of food, but not Allen Chapel, they do it straight from their pockets. This time of year, but really all year long, the homeless eat like kings and queens out here on the streets. There’s no way that a homeless person can go hungry here in Riverside. Different churches throughout the week feed the homeless, continued on page 12

myvoice which is a blessing I believe. Reverend Monroe Mabon at Allen Chapel is a blessing to us all. A former LAPD police officer who served under the leadership of Chief Darryl Gates, and an assistant pastor at Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church, he often tells us volunteers, “No matter what you may do, keep God and people first, stay compassionate towards people keep your hearts humble and lovable towards God and man.” Rev. Mabon gives the devotion at Allen Chapel before lunch, offering encouragement to the drug addict or alcoholic, telling them God loves you, no matter what. One interesting fact about Rev. Mabon is the homeless ask for him throughout the week, they’re so excited to hear encouragement, but they directly ask for him, for just about anything. I see him write people recommendation letters for work, or if a homeless person needs a letter of recommendation for court, they go to him. The most productive way to get started

Sharing & Caring: St. Paul AME Church Delivers 1000 I n San Bernardino, St. Paul AME Church recently hosted the 5th annual Share and Care Day and served 1000 meals in the San Bernardino community as well as offered free mammograms to uninsured women. Pastor Larry Campbell and members of the St. Paul family joined the Eta Nu Omega Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, High Calling Christian Church and New Focus Community Development Outreach Corporation, in donating food for the baskets, packaging the meals, and working to ensure they were delivered to families in the surrounding communities. According to Pastor Campbell, between the families who picked up their food baskets from the church and those delivered by the members, over 1000 families were served. The event also included activities for children, a clothing give-away, health screenings for blood sugar/diabetes, cholesterol, hemoglobin, vision, dental hygiene, lupus, obesity, WIC, mental health services, resources for pregnant women, and information on the Affordable Care Act.

voicecommunity helping the homeless is to join forces with a wellestablished operation like Allen Chapel A.M.E. As a volunteer I learned from those who are already making a difference, rather than repeating the mistakes of well-meaning but misguided novices. A good place to start volunteering is at your local church. If your congregation doesn’t have a homeless ministry, find a reputable organization in your city and invite church members to join you and your family in serving. At Allen Chapel A.M.E. we believe, one of the best ways to help a homeless person is to show them respect. As you look into their eyes, talk to them with genuine interest, and recognize their value as an individual, you will give them a sense of dignity that they rarely experience. Corey Glinsey is a volunteer with the Allen Chapel AME Church Food Ministry and a recent graduate of the Eleanor Grier Leadership Academy. Allen Chapel AME is located at 4009 Locust Street in Downtown Riverside. They can be reached by calling (951) 686-9406. They serve Riverside’s homeless population every Tuesday at lunchtime.

Crisis Response: U.S. Navy Aircrewman Aids Philippines Philippine Sea

By Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Paolo Bayas aval Aircrewman 2nd Class Justin Peach, from Riverside, has dreamt of being the one to rappel down from a floating platform less than five feet under whirring blades to help strangers in need of assistance. Peach, assigned to the “Golden Falcons” of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 12, lived his dream for the first time as a first responder from the U.S. Navy’s forward-deployed aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) in support of Operation Damayan. It was a typical day aboard the George Washington when Peach received news that a super typhoon hit the islands of the Republic of the Philippines and the George Washington Strike Group was directed to provide assistance and relief to the Philippine people. “Rules and objectives were established in the primary mission brief,” said Peach. “I was concerned about how we were going to provide assistance and protection for the Philippine people.” In the squadron ready room, after his brief, Peach weighed his green flight suit down with an additional 50 pounds of search and rescue gear in order to be ready for any possible scenario. When

N

the time came, he calmly climbed into an MH-60S Seahawk, from HSC 12, as it took off toward the unknown. “It’s all about the job and focusing on the task at hand,” said Peach. “I don’t have time to stress.” After arriving on scene, he saw a small crowd of people waving and rushing toward the helicopter. “There was a tiny little island,” said Peach. “I had never seen anything like that before; I couldn’t believe that there were people who lived there. When we approached, I was concerned for their safety. Then I realized the men were directing us to a sand barge where we could hoist down supplies.” Peach would be the one to descend multiple times to provide nearly 1,000 pounds of food and supplies to help the Philippine civilians. There became an instinctive understanding between him and the natives of this small island -- he was there to help and they were grateful. “I just did my job and didn’t think about anything,” said Peach. “After our mission was done, I was able to reflect and I got excited about what we did. We just helped a lot of people.” Peach expressed that if it were his family who were in need of help, he would not want anyone else other than U.S. naval aircrewmen to be the ones aiding them, like he did for the Philippine

families he came across. “A lot of people lost loved ones from this typhoon, but I can’t let that get to me,” said Peach. “I have to accept that these circumstances will happen and I have to do my job to help those who I can.” After a long and hard day, Peach’s helicopter carries him back to George Washington to re-fit and rest before continuing the ongoing operation to rescue, aid and support the Philippine people. Super Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda reached speeds up to 195 mph, gusts up to 235 mph and landfall waves of 50 feet. According to the Philippine government’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, the super typhoon impacted more than 4.2 million people across 36 provinces in the Philippines. The George Washington Strike Group in coordination with the 3d Marine Expeditionary Brigade is assisting the Philippine government in ongoing relief efforts in response to the aftermath of Super Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda in the Republic of the Philippines. Chancellor Baron noted that these results do not come easily. “In order to achieve acceptable numbers, we have to take extensive outreach steps. For instance, for the Science Building at San Bernardino Valley College, a $16.8 million project, the construction management company had to invite 239 general contractors, 138 of which were local, to end up with 9 total bidders, of which 3 were local. The search for subcontractors was similar – 1776 were invited to participate, of which 771 were local. 122 subcontractors participated in the process, of which 48 were local. The 2015 total phones calls resulted in 55% local hires with 11 local firms out of 20 subcontractors on this specific project.” BP 6610 sets Board Goals of 50% participation of local hires and 25% participation of local businesses in District Bid projects. The goals are reflective of the demographics of the community and the Board clarified that it is their intent to not only meet the goals but to exceed them. The Policy defines “local” as individuals or businesses that reside or have their principal headquarters or a permanently staffed regional office in the Inland Empire. Bid documents will include language that advises all bidders of the

Districts strong preference that contractors hire local residents and that they participate in Apprenticeship programs to ensure the development of a competently trained local workforce. Contractors must document their efforts to comply with the policy, which requires a good-faith, verified effort. The goal will be evaluated based on an entire fiscal year assessment, in accordance with regulations to be developed. As an alternative, the bidder may certify that it intends to perform 95% of the work with its own employees. The Board of Trustees will be kept informed on the success of the Policy through quarterly reports. In addition to the Policy which was adopted, a formal presentation was made to the Board on a new Construction Training Collaborative (CTC) which was formed at the direction of Chancellor Baron and is being led by the Economic Development and Corporate Training Division (EDCT) of the SBCCD. The membership of the CTC includes district staff, three Trustees, and representatives of the San Bernardino Employment Training Agency, the County and City Workforce Investment Boards and Kitchell/BRj, the construction management firm

involved in the Measure M Bond Program. The CTC’s goal is to prepare the workforce needed for the recovering construction industry in the Inland Empire and the upcoming many public projects. The local hiring policy helps to ensure that job opportunities will be available for those trained through the CTC, including pre-apprenticeship training to be offered through the EDCT. The CTC was created to help agencies promote scheduled projects in order to ensure that the needed resources are available locally to provide maximum benefit to the community. Those resources include the availability of bonding, low cost insurance and a trained local workforce. Among the projects being undertaken by the CTC currently are: • Recommend local hiring policy adoption to drive demand for a trained local workforce • Educate local contractors and project owners on benefits of local hiring policies, available bonding options, low cost insurance and an available trained local workforce • Promote industry-standard training to supply

Q&A

with Major Daniel & Captain Anya Henderson, Leaders of SB Salvation Army Corps.

What is the Salvation Army’s role in the community? There are people who have dreams and there are others whose dreams are broken. There are people who have hope and those who have lost their hope. There are people who make enough money to provide for themselves, and for those who they love, and there are others who cannot sleep at night, because they do not know how they will pay the bills, and feed their children until the next paycheck comes. In The Salvation Army, we believe that every person has the right to restoring their dignity. We believe that children should not go to bed hungry in a country of plenty. We believe that even when people make such mistakes in life that it costs them everything, they should have another chance to get up, and restore their dreams, and to become someone who can contribute for good to others. That is why we commit ourselves to care for the poor, to feed the hungry, to clothe the naked, to love the unlovable, and to befriend those who have no friends. In all that we do, people will hear about the love of Jesus, who accepts and loves them as they are! The Salvation Army’s efforts increase during the holiday season, what in terms of giving back to the community do they do, their goal, and what they wish to accomplish? During the holiday season we try our best to remember all those who may feel forgotten and unwanted. We would like to help families with small children to experience a real Christmas in spite of their financial struggles. As one single mother has put it for me about her 4-year-old son: “I want him to have Christmas. Maybe he doesn’t know if we have enough, but I do!” We try to provide real Christmas dinner for all who have nowhere to go, for the homeless and lonely in our area. We run a food drive and toy drive for low income families who apply for assistance. This year we

hope to serve at least 600 families with children. How can community members become involved in the Army’s efforts? People in our community can become involved in The Salvation Army’s efforts in at least three ways: 1) They can donate their time as volunteers, helping with their time and skills to serve the people who come to The Salvation Army for help; 2) They can donate food, clothes, and unwanted items of all kinds - The Salvation Army then uses these items to help people in need.; 3) They can donate financially, in a variety of ways, from placing money in the red kettle at Christmas, to leaving a lasting legacy gift in their will. Donors can restrict their donations to specific programs and locations, to make sure that their gift is used as they intended. This practice of honoring donors’ wishes has made The Salvation Army one of America’s favorite charities!

Established in 1865, The Salvation Army is motivated by a love for God and a concern for the needs of all humanity, regardless of race, color, creed, gender or age. We serve people in crisis: the family who has been evicted – the spouse who has suffered abuse –– the elderly trying to survive on a meager pension – the hungry – people struggling with substance abuse – the previously incarcerated seeking rehabilitation – affordable housing for low income families and assistance to natural disaster victims. Those most in need in our communities deserve our support. Human need wears many faces and The Salvation Army is there to help. Major Daniel and Captain Anya Henderson appointed as the new Salvation Army leaders to the San Bernardino Corps. The couple previously served the Salvation Army in Estonia, a nation that once was part of the Soviet Union.
