My Holiday Addiction I have an addiction. It’s a holiday addiction. I’m not proud of it, nor am I actively doing anything to cure it. Like most addictive behaviors it helps me get through the day, in this case, the season. It’s a guilty pleasure, something I seem to have more of the older I become. This year it started with an innocent text message on November 16th from my sister Lynn, “Hallmark Christmas is back yea!!!!” Yes, those were her exact words. My response: Time to start watching! If you haven’t guessed by now I am one of those women - the Hallmark Channel’s target market. One of those viewers who will watch, hour after hour, the sappy, silly, sometimes romantic, most often cliché, holiday narratives featuring the widowed mother of small children who is afraid to fall in love again, or widowed father who is struggling to take care of his two children who is afraid to fall in love again, or the heartless boss who is Scrooge-like in his hatred for the Christmas season and is afraid to fall in love again. There are all the stock characters, and basic plots, and for some reason I can’t stop watching. Perhaps it’s because I’m comforted by the resolution of the stories. The widowed parent always finds love. The cruel and apathetic boss becomes empathetic and full of the holiday spirit. The cynical reporter gains faith after covering the story of the town where the holiday spirit never dies. The big city bank does not foreclose on the struggling family-owned farm or the family widget-making factory is saved just before Christmas Day. Miracles happen in this world, at least during the Christmas season. When I was a little girl I couldn’t wait for the countdown to Christmas to begin. It started December 1st, with the making of the “Christmas Chain” in class. We would spend a few days during arts & crafts cutting red and green construction paper in thin strips, then we’d shape the strips into circles and link them into a chain configuration. We made 24 of those links and attached them to one gold link at the top of the chain. Every day of the month we would cut one link until Christmas arrived and only the gold link was left. For a grade school age child, the ritual served several purposes. Like most traditions and rituals, the Christmas Chain reinforced the cyclical nature of our lives, offered comfort, promoted patience, and alleviated some of the anxiety of waiting for the big day to arrive. My Christmas story addiction probably started then. The Frank Capra film “It’s A Wonderful Life” was required viewing every December in our home. Every year as a family we would watch the story of what the town of Bedford Falls would have become if George Bailey had never been born. On Christmas Eve, George, played by a young Jimmy Stewart, finds his world crumbling around him with a life seemingly so desperate he contemplates suicide. He had always wanted to leave Bedford Falls, but circumstances and his own good heart caused him to stay. He sacrificed his own dreams to keep the family-run savings and loan afloat and in essence protected the community from an unscrupulous businessman who wants to control the town. As George prepares to jump from a bridge, his guardian angel intercedes; showing him what life would have become for the residents of Bedford Falls if he had never lived. As an adult, my holiday traditions have become sporadic at best. Every once in a while, I become nostalgic for the traditions and rituals of my past holidays and find myself playing Lou Rawls’ “Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town” one of my favorite Christmas songs from childhood that I have downloaded on my iTunes, or hanging the stockings from the fireplace mantle, or even sending my husband and son to pick-up a Christmas tree so the house can really smell like Christmas. But what has been consistent is the Christmas story addiction. Even as I sit writing this note, “The Santa Suit” is on the Hallmark Channel starring Kevin Sorbo as the unyielding and obdurate boss who unknowingly switches places with Kris Kringle in a story that must have been pitched as “Freaky Friday” meets “A Christmas Carol.” Stories inspire. They instruct. As writer Jonathan Gottschall explains as humans we are so addicted to story that we even construct them in our sleep. So I look forward to next year when I will once again be reacquainted with George Bailey, Ebenezer Scrooge, and the hundreds of characters in the dramas and romantic comedies I’ve come to enjoy this time of year. And the resolution, like all good Christmas stories, will remind me why this is the season of joy, faith, compassion, and yes, even miracles.

New Procedure at Loma Linda University Medical Center Allows Moreno Valley Man to Regain Sight Loma Linda

A

fter two decades of gradually losing his vision, Roy Kennedy figured he had little to lose by agreeing to take part in a new procedure at Loma Linda University Medical Center that implants a tiny telescope in his eye to let him see again. A few weeks after having been implanted with the miniature telescope in his right eye, the 77year old Moreno Valley, Calif. resident, who had suffered from end-stage macular degeneration (AMD), has no regrets. “It’s the best thing I’ve done; it has allowed me to come out of a shell I’ve created for myself because of my lack of eyesight,” said Kennedy, a retired educator from Banning School District, whose surgery was performed by renowned eye surgeon Dr. Howard Gimbel. Loma Linda University Medical Center is the first hospital in the Inland Empire to implant the

telescope implant for patients with AMD, the leading cause of blindness in older Americans. The FDA approved telescope implant is the main feature of CentraSight, a new patient care program for treating patients with AMD. The first-of-itskind telescope implant is believed to be the only surgical option that improves vision by reducing the impact of the central vision blind spot caused by AMD. The cost for the telescope implant and visits associated with the treatment are Medicare eligible. Patients with AMD suffer from a central blind spot, meaning they have difficulty seeing when they look “straight ahead.” Patients often have difficulty or find it impossible to recognize faces, read the newspapers, or watch TV. The telescope implant, which is slightly smaller than a pea, uses micro-optical technology to magnify images that can be seen by central vision.

fter voting in support of HR 1402, reauthorizing funding for the Veterans Administration (VA) housing programs for homeless veterans, U.S. Rep. Gloria Negrete McLeod (CA-35) stated: “Like the nation, homelessness among veterans is a serious problem in the Inland Empire region of California,” said Negrete McLeod. “The district I represent is home to over 20,000 veterans. It will take a continued coordination between the VA and local organizations to ensure that veterans are able to take advantage of housing assistance programs in and around the area.” This past August, Negrete McLeod hosted a field hearing on veterans’ issues in the City of Fontana. The issue of homelessness was one of the top concerns amongst veteran groups at the hearing. The VA and local organizations at the field hearing also assisted veterans in applying for VA benefits. Over 200 veterans attended. “This is a great example of better coordination in helping our veterans. Today’s vote on this important legislation is a step in the right direction, but more work remains to be accomplished.” explained Negrete McLeod. Bill HR 1402 passed the House and will now be sent to the Senate for consideration.

anything that they are looking at directly, as when reading, any improvement in their eyesight makes a big difference in their quality of life,” Dr. Gimbel said. He said the procedure is not for everyone, and there are strict criteria for candidates, including that patients must not have had cataract surgery. Dr. Michael Rauser, Vice-Chair and Associate Residency Program Director of the Loma Linda University Department of Ophthalmology, said the addition of the implantable miniature telescope as a treatment for patients with stable, advanced age-related macular degeneration, is an important new therapy for patients suffering from end-stage macular degeneration. “Loma Linda University Medical Center Department of Ophthalmology strives to be a Center of Excellence for the Inland Empire, and the local availability of the implantable miniature telescope is another example of this philosophy,” Dr. Rauser said. “Instead of a standard intraocular lens, a miniature telescope is inserted into the eye after cataract removal. This provides improved distance visual acuity, while minimizing the loss of peripheral vision that is associated with the use of external telescopes.” Since having the procedure done in the fall, Kennedy has been working with therapists at Loma Linda University Medical Center, who are especially trained to help low-vision patients, to help him get used to going about his daily life with the telescope implant. He said he’s grateful for the little things that people with good vision often take for granted. “Before, when I went to the grocery store, all I did was push the cart,” he said. “Now, I can go to the store pick out the items that I like.”

F.A.C.P., F.A.C.P.M.

Prescription-drug coupons: Do the math first! Dear Dr. Levister: I’m being overrun with prescription drug coupons. Who issues them and are they of any ‘real’ value? V.R.

Dear V. R.: A drug coupon is a coupon intended to help consumers save money on pharmaceutical drugs. They are offered by drug companies or distributed to consumers via doctors and pharmacists, and most can be obtained online. There are drug coupons for drugs from many categories such as cholesterol, acne, migraine, allergies etc. To save a buck on prescription medications more consumers, than ever, are turning to manufacturer coupons. They can make expensive brand-name prescription drugs seem more affordable. But they might steer you to drugs that aren’t the best choice or that you don’t need at all. So how do you know when to clip and when to skip?

Drug manufacturers have offered these programs more in recent years, in part because insurance companies often charge consumers higher co-pays for brand-name products. The offers can be enticing. Indeed, nearly 16 percent, or nearly 19 million, of all Americans who regularly take a prescription medication have used coupons in the last year to save money, according to a 2011 survey by the Consumer Reports National Research Center. For example, you can get free trials or deep discounts on many well-known medications, including the cholesterol-lowering drugs Crestor (rosuvastatin), Lipitor (atorvastatin), and Vytorin (ezetimibe/simvastatin), as well as the antidepressants Cymbalta (duloxetine) and Effexor XR (venlafaxine). Unfortunately, they’re often not the best, first choice for many conditions. For example, according to an analysis by Consumer Reports

Best Buy Drugs, although Actos is used to treat type 2 diabetes, three other low-cost generic medications actually work as well as or better than Actos: metformin, glimepiride, and glipizide, alone or in combination. A month’s supply of each of them is less than $30, and they can be found on the discount generic drug lists of many chain pharmacies for as little as $4. While coupons might make brand-name drugs cheaper, less-expensive generic equivalents may be available, and many of those generic alternatives are just as effective and as safe as their brand-name counterparts. Co-pays for generics are often much lower—sometimes as little as one-tenth the cost—than those for brand-name drugs. Before starting on a brandname drug, ask your doctor or pharmacist about comparable generics. It could save you hundreds of dollars or more a year.

E Hardy L. Brown

very Christmas is a trip down memory lane for my family and myself, and this one is a little different because of some milestones in our life. This year, Cheryl and I celebrated 50 years of marriage on January 26, 2013 and so many people said, at the time, it would not last. Now those who made that statement were evaluating us on what we were doing at the time and I had just begun a career at California Electric Company (now Edison). Well fifty years later we have been blessed with four children, nine grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. God has blessed us with Cheryl serving her first year as a state legislator in the assembly while logging many miles back and forth to Sacramento, and one trip taking her to Armenia. Justin, one of our grandsons, has successfully been my caregiver during the year and we have learned a lot about each other. We are looking forward to doing it again next year as Cheryl starts her second year. Our children have taken over the family business Brown Publishing Company and the Black Voice Newspaper, the non-profit organization Black Voice Foundation Inc., and re-launched our statewide organization California Black Media from Sacramento. I also had a trip back to Trenton, North Carolina to the Jonas and Mary Brown (my father’s parents) 40th family reunion. It was Justin’s first time where he saw over a hundred cousins he had never met. This of course stirred in me the desire to start reviewing all of our family pictures that we have taken over the past fifty plus years and get to family members while we can remember some faces and put names to them.

This has sparked a family conversation with our younger generation about our heritage. But as it gets closer to Christmas, I drift back to childhood and it being cold but mama cooking those cakes and pies with the smell floating throughout the house waiting for Santa to come. I think of going into the woods by our house and cutting the tree then decorating it with holly we also got in the woods. I remember the plays at school and the programs at church where every child had a part to play in telling the story of our savior. However nothing could or would take the joy away of waking up early on Christmas morning to presents and candy with fruit all neatly placed so you could tell who got what. Neatly placing the presents for the kids was also the tradition Cheryl and I established for our kids, with Cheryl adding baking pumpkin bread to our list of holiday traditions. Through the years we have gone from lavish outside and inside decorations to the children putting up the tree for us. If you’ve noticed, I have not mentioned my illness and that is because I thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for giving me the faith, strength, courage and His Grace and Mercy to endure this situation. He has given me so much time to do the things I had thought about doing but never could find the time because of other pressing issues. Yes Christmas is a special time to me and it means even more now than ever before; but without those early experiences, I would only have empty memories of what is the most important time of year for Christians. Have a Merry Christmas and safe and wonderful New Year.

T

he holiday season is the time of year when we honor sacred traditions, be it Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or Christmas. We gather with loved ones, friends, and family - some of whom we may not have seen in a while - to celebrate the year passed, giving us the opportunity to look toward the New Year with fresh and hopeful eyes. Of course, people also use the New Year as an opportunity to take up new resolutions, goals that will improve one’s health and personal wellbeing. With the spirit of the holidays in mind, I encourage you to also make an effort this New Year to volunteer in your community to help others in need. Helping others is a way to focus the holiday spirit in a positive manner to benefit our community. With 16 percent of Americans living in poverty, surely there is a need for giving back to our communities. This time of year can be the time to find your own way to spread the public good and help build your community, and the options are only limited by your imagination. Consider opportunities to tutor a student, mentor a younger colleague, participate in a blood drive, pick up litter in your community, aid an elderly or disabled person, donate books to your public library, hold a bake sale to help support the local fire and police department, write a letter to a soldier stationed overseas, or volunteer your time at a non-profit organization. Just this past September, I received a letter from a constituent who took an opportunity to volunteer

in a way that was highly effective for her and beneficial to her community. As a cancer survivor, this resident devoted herself to help others who have fallen ill with the same illness she was able to defeat. She’s volunteered throughout southern California with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, and as a Lay Health Advisor, providing and assisting in educational awareness programs. Her fight against cancer has taken her coast to coast, spreading her message to the halls of Congress in Washington. While each of our efforts may not mirror this resident’s dedication, her commitment to robust volunteerism is the exact kind of action that enhances public benefit, and one we can look to as a great example. I believe that in this season, when our hearts open up, great work can blossom from all of us. Any capacity that you can volunteer to help your community is valuable. While our efforts and actions may differ, the common theme that is shared is helping a neighbor in need. These acts of volunteerism help sow stronger the threads of our nation, and build the bonds of our communities neighbors. The holidays are a hopeful time of year, as we celebrate the close of one year and the birth of another. It is a time for celebrations and hope, for good cheer and well wishing. As this holiday season continues, I hope that we all can spread its good intention, and warm spirit. I wish you and your family peace, prosperity, and good health.

30 Years in the Making -

Breaking through Moreno Valley’s Political Barriers

Nearly 30 years ago, changes to city politics proved a major challenge for Mary Faust-Mayhew, architect of a previous recall petition Story by Mary Faust-Mayhew Written by VOICE Staff t felt like a movie. Two corporate men in fancy suits carrying briefcases roll into a dusty small town with their stylish Maserati and walk up to your front door with a business proposition. Only their briefcase is loaded with more than what you bargained for. This is far from a movie, but the beginning of a long, uphill battle for Mary FaustMayhew who learned first -hand how deep money and power can be intertwined with city affairs. The men strolled up to the door of the daycare business that she, known as Mary Faust at the time, and her husband has successfully ran together – in a hard-earned home that the two had scraped their savings together to buy next to an empty lot. The two corporate honchos had one very simple offer according to Mary, whose husband was away at the time: we’re building a motel next door, where would you like for the air conditioners to go? “They didn’t offer me anything,” Mary said in astonishment. “They didn’t care. Most motels are three-sided. They showed me the plans and everything. Where the air conditioners would have gone, it would have created noise.”

I

Yes, today’s concerned citizens of Moreno Valley have all the right in the world to celebrate their recall victory over select city councilmembers, but this story of civic uprising and political upheaval dates far back to 1985, when Moreno Valley was becoming more than just a shadow of Riverside County and emerging into the sunlight as a fully incorporated city. The booming growth of Moreno Valley that attracted young families and urban city dwellers, particularly from the Los Angeles area, spurned disconcerting government practices and unethical alliances that many residents today are not aware of, which is one of the reasons Mary’s story begins this way. There goes the neighborhood, thought Faust. She increasingly realized there was more at stake than just deafening noise from air conditioning motors, the motel could augment traffic and bring unwanted trouble. She raised her concerns to the Riverside City Council, who at the time still had jurisdiction over Moreno Valley during the city’s transition into incorporation. Undeterred by the hoops she would have to jump through, she was routed to Moreno Valley City Council where she took her concerns and found virtually no success

there. Faust began to notice “inappropriate” relationships between developers and some city officials that starkly appeared like collusion to benefit each other – back scratching at the expense of residents. Why there weren’t more honest elected officials in office baffled Mary. “The good people who want to run don’t want to be involved. Therefore, you aren’t left with a huge pool of people who want to run … people who are altruists.” Mary protested, created a sign and walked door to door informing anyone willing to listen. Mary, who was attending Riverside Community College in pursuit of Political Science degree, which she later received at California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB), said she wrote a brief letter the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). It turned out to be enough to have representatives of the organization meet with her and guide her organization in their battle. Later on, Mary’s battle with the motel wasn’t the only hurdle residents had to overcome, as the proposal of an airport on several acres of unused land birthed several additional citizens’ organizations. All were opposed to the proposed

development – but Mary’s group ARG got the shortest end of the stick, she said. The ARG members were individually slapped with a lawsuit from a real estate developer tied to the proposal, she said. Today, Faust might credit the model used in President Obama’s unconventional grassroots fundraising efforts to build her citizens group, but the idea was all her own back then – and the only option she had to finance her legal efforts to fight. She was an officer for the Alliance for Responsible Government (ARG) founded by John and Karen Jackson and rallied concerned citizens to their cause. The group sought meager donations amounting to about $3,000. For Mary, her $3,000 fundraising goal felt like $3,000,000. Meanwhile, her church was talking, her kids saw less of her, her business was without her as much as before, and her husband was growing frustrated. She had to hire an additional employee to manage her responsibilities while she was away working in her community. She was pegged a nuisance by many for her unrelenting resolve to unearth shady business practices and bring more transparency to city affairs. Her protests garnered more than its fair share of detractors, including insults from bypassers who demanded that she “get back in the kitchen.” She still recalls the late-night threatening phone calls and her tires slashed while she sat unaware in city council meetings. Mary, who was a dedicated Mormon at the time, was summoned to meet with one of her church leaders who were concerned about her activities in the community. “I got called into my bishop’s office. I was told my behavior was unbecoming of a Mormon woman … but I told him I was an American woman first and I have constitutional rights that I was going to exercise.” Mary’s determination and the commitment of concerned Moreno Valley citizens resulted in the resignation of three city councilmembers, she said. Her victory wasn’t without its casualties. Mary blamed her time fighting for the greater good of Moreno Valley woke up a part of Mary that she

didn’t know existed. She grew into a woman that she says her husband couldn’t relate to any longer. Today, her divorce remains one of her biggest regrets in the aftermath of pushing Moreno Valley forward. “I wasn’t a rock star or anything, but I felt that what I did was significant.” Mary’s story is about living a quality life now and providing for the future. To her, hindsight is “20/20”, but she’s not certain if she would ever “be big enough to face that situation if I could do it all over again.” Mary eventually left Moreno Valley and sold her home on Elder Avenue. Since her last visit in 2004, the vacant lot next to her daycare home remained vacant. And today, she carries a message for citizens fighting for better living conditions. “Just because people have a lot of money, doesn’t make them more powerful than you. Just because they make up lies and put a bunch of money behind it, doesn’t mean it was true. Anything can be changed.”

Judge John Gabbert, one of UC Riverside’s Founders, Dies at 104

The Campus is mourning the loss of a lifelong friend Riverside

By Kris Lovekin he Honorable John G. Gabbert, one of Riverside’s most prominent citizens and a key founder of UC Riverside, died Monday, Dec. 9 at the age of 104. “Throughout his life, Gabbert maintained his ties to the campus he helped build and to the local community,” said Chancellor Kim A. Wilcox in a message to the campus community. “For several years after he retired from his legal career, he served as an adjunct professor in UCR’s political science department, creating and teaching a popular moot court class. We will miss him greatly.” A former chancellor, Timothy P. White, said “John Gabbert was an extraordinary man, a leader, a pillar in our community. As a lawyer, a judge, a citizen, I cannot overstate the impact

that he had, not merely UC Riverside, but all of the Inland Southern California region. His was a life well lived and he will be truly missed.” As a founding member of the Citizen’s University Committee, Gabbert was instrumental in the efforts to bring a University of California campus to Riverside. When the State of California began looking into adding campuses to the UC system, the CUC worked tirelessly to lobby members of the Strayer Committee about turning the UC Citrus Experiment Station into a liberal arts university. “There were a whole series of Strayer Committee meetings from Eureka to San Diego, from Redding, Fresno, Bakersfield, San Luis Obispo, Santa Maria, Santa Barbara, Los continued on page 21

“John Gabbert was an extraordinary man, a leader, a pillar in our community. His was a life well lived and he will be truly missed.” - Former chancellor, Timothy P. White

degree at the Boalt Hall School of Law at UC Berkeley in 1934. Gabbert became a deputy district attorney in Riverside in 1935 and, in 1938, he joined Raymond and Eugene Best’s law firm and became a partner in 1941. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945 as a special agent in the Criminal Investigation Division, being admitted to practice before the Philippine Supreme Court in1945. He returned to Best, Best, Gabbert and Krieger after the war but left the firm for good in 1949 when he was appointed as a judge on the Riverside County Superior Court. He served with the court until 1970, when Governor Ronald Reagan appointed him to Fourth District Court of Appeals. He retired from the bench in 1974. Gabbert was preceded in death by his

wife, Katherine, who passed away in 1999. His survivors include his daughters Sarah and Katherine, his son Scott and a number of grandchildren. The family would like memorial donations to be made to the Gabbert Justice Fund, which is administered through the Riverside Community Foundation, or to the John Gabbert Scholarship at UCR.

Angeles and all around, we had somebody at every darn meeting,” Gabbert recounted in an oral history recorded in 1998. “We might have missed a meeting in Eureka or missed one in Redding, but I know I went to several meetings that were in Southern California.” He went on to become a founding member of the UC Riverside Foundation Board of Trustees, serving from 1980 through 1998 and was the first recipient of the UCR Foundation’s Trustee’s Award for Extraordinary Service. He also received the UC Riverside Founders Award and the CUC’s Outstanding Service Award. His other awards include the Riverside Bar Association Krieger Service Award and The Leo A. In another project in the last few years, UCR Extension created a history of John Gabbert’s life and put it on two DVDs. Born in Oxnard, California in 1909, Gabbert moved to Riverside at the age of three when his father, John R. Gabbert, purchased a halfinterest in the Enterprise newspaper. He attended Riverside-area schools until his family moved to South Pasadena in 1925. He graduated from South Pasadena HS, then returned to Riverside in 1927 to attend Riverside Community College. From there he earned his bachelor’s degree at Occidental College, then went on to earn a law

I

Lois Carson on Mandela: From Prisoner to President

was in Tucson, Arizona on that unforgettable Sunday morning in 1990 when Nelson Mandela was released from prison and I sat transfixed when he was sworn in as South Africa’s first democratically-elected president who happened to be a Black man. His death on December 5 made me recount the times and ways he had touched my life. I became more conscious of the man when the National Council of Negro Women(NCNW), under the leadership of president Dr. Dorothy I Height urged the membership to support Winnie Mandela who was being persecuted by the government while her husband suffered at Robben Island. I was aware of apartheid and the ANC already; now I wanted to know more about the man and the plight of his people. I read two books by South African writer, Mark Mathabane, who painted such a starkly brutal picture of life for Black people in the country. In 1985, I attended the UN Decade for Women Conference in Nairobi, Kenya with the NCNW where we met 20 South African women who were there without the consent of their government and did not know what would happen to them when they returned home; they said they did not care as they would rather be dead than continue to live the harsh conditions imposed on them. They were inspired by the courageous resistance practiced by Mandela and our delegation discussed the situation with the ladies several times. Following the conference, our group visited the small country landlocked by South Africa: Swaziland, a kingdom never colonized by a foreign power; we had to go through Johannesburg to get to the country. The women there had replicated the NCNW’s Mississippi Pig Project and we were there to see their progress. We visited with the wives of the king who applauded our joint venture; we talked about the women who were selling their livestock in South Africa; they said “we are neighbors-not friends”; they identified totally with the struggles of Mandela and his people but had no other market for their product. On the way home we encountered a heavy

police presence in the Johannesburg airport and I checked the newspaper which stated “BOTHA DECLARES EMERGENCY”. Dr. Height suggested we all buy a paper as it could mean we were seeing the beginning of the end to apartheid but no one could have predicted that only five years later the end would come! In the meantime, NCNW joined the movement to divest in South Africa. The local NCNW led a large group to the Los Angeles Coliseum to see Nelson and Winnie Mandela during their American tour; thousands of cheering devotees welcomed the couple to the southland. Soon after I discovered his biography “Long Walk to Freedom” which I highly recommend; it reveals an extraordinary man who never lost his dignity under oppression; one who studied his captors and used what he learned to outwit them and win them over. The book has recently been made into a movie featuring British actor, Idris Elba. Readers will learn a lot about the country as well as the man. The most important encounter I had was up close and personal; early into the new century, maybe the year 2000, I had gone to Washington DC for a Workforce Development meeting and called Dr. Height to chat; she invited me to be her guest at a high level international function that night. For once I had not taken suitable clothing on this trip. So, I went to Filene’s Basement and bought a dress and shoes and was it all worth it. Thanks to Dr. Height, I got to meet Nelson Mandela, Gracla Marchal, and Bishop Tutu; Mandela was a tall stately man whose eyes exuded brilliance and he looked right at you as if you were important to him. Oh what a night! President Mandela said “It is not that I have no fear but that I had to act in spite of my fear”. That was the same attitude the 20 women exhibited in Nairobi. It was the book that finally gave me the indepth view of the man

and I encourage readers to read the three books I referred to earlier. The Long Walk to Freedom by Mandela, and Kaffir Boy and African Women by Mathabane. Lois J. Carson, a San Bernardino resident, is the former CEO of Riverside County’s Community Action Partnership.
