ast week my alma mater Cal State University, San Bernardino, held a Presidential Investiture ceremony for Dr. Tomas Morales, the university’s fourth president. As I drove on campus last Friday, I couldn’t help but think about how much the campus has grown in the 27 years since I arrived as a freshman. The campus footprint was much different then. It was a wide expanse of open space at the base of the beautiful San Bernardino mountains, with very little of the 441 acres covered by buildings. There was a small student union, cafeteria, bookstore, one wing of administrative offices, a small gym, campus dorms, a school theater, and the towering Pfau Library right in the middle of it all. With the addition of several parking structures, six new buildings, an expanded library, student center and sports arena, the campus has at least tripled in square footage since then. The campus community, now more than ever, reflects the diversity of region. When I was a student in 1986 our president at the time questioned if minority students were intellectually and emotionally ready for a university experience. Designated a Hispanic Serving Institution, the campus now ranks #1 in the CSU system for the retention of African-American students and #1 in the nation in awarding bachelor’s degrees in math to Latino students. Latino and African-American student enrollments are the 3rd highest of any university in California, and 70% of the students are the first in their families to attend college. The first time I heard about President Morales was through my brother Hardy who met him, and like others have professed, instantly liked him. “Paulette he’s cool people,” my brother said to me. Which, in case you’re wondering, is sibling shorthand for “he is personable, humble, caring, warm, a true education leader.” I then received a Facebook note from my mentor Dr. Aubrey Bonnett, former dean of the School of Social & Behavioral Sciences who also had a glowing recommendation for his colleague. His sentiment was CSU San Bernardino is lucky to have President Morales as its new leader. So I was surprised, but not shocked, when I received a call from President Morales the day after the CSUSB campus police fatally shot an African-American graduate student with a history of mental illness who was acting erratically near student housing. Understanding the sensitive nature of the incident and the history of race relations in the region, President Morales was on the phone calling community leaders explaining what happened and what the campus was doing in response, he quickly met with African-American faculty and staff, he talked to the young man’s family, he led the situation with a sense of urgency, compassion, and intelligence. While CSUSB has gained a strong campus leader in President Morales, the campus also lost one of its best campus faculty leaders to retirement. Our photographer was on campus to document the retirement party of Dr. Jean Peacock. Before I even started my freshman year, I spent the summer on campus in a college preparatory program. Dr. Peacock was the director. She hired me for my first campus job and served as advisor to the Black Student Union including my term as president of the organization. She encouraged me to attend graduate school and more recently, in her position as Assistant Dean, hired me to teach an expository writing course at CSUSB. What’s amazing about Dr. Peacock and her career as an educator is that there are hundreds of students who have similar testimonies. She never seems to tire of helping students, encouraging colleagues, or giving her time and expertise to improving the lives of everyone near her. As a proud CSUSB alumna, I am so happy to see that the campus that encouraged and nurtured my love for education is continuing to grow both in size as well as leadership. And as the campus loses one great leader in Dr. Peacock, it gains another in President Morales.

Medgar Evers Would Be Proud: Blacks Voted at a Higher Rate than Whites in 2012

T

his past week marked the 50th year of NAACP Field Secretary, Medgar Evers’ murder in Mississippi. Evers was assassinated because he was registering and organizing Black people to vote and become involved in American democracy. Today, many young citizens are asking the question, “why would someone kill somebody for doing what is a civic duty for good government?” This is a good question and one that we had forgotten until the national Republican Party began implementing some of the same tactics and strategies for laws that Evers was fighting against. Just like 50 years ago, many states were allowing White citizens to engage in intimidation to prevent Blacks from registering and voting in every election especially in southern states. Well this time it was and is happening all over the country with some being more aggressive than others in their attempt to turn back the hands of time. To answer the question I proposed earlier, it is all about who is controlling the government. Fifty years ago most African Americans lived in the south and many found themselves sharecropping on White-owned farms or working in other industries with no legal protection if they became involved in civil rights issues. Farmers were kicked off of farms, domestic workers were fired from their jobs, and government workers were put on so-called blacklists for even signing up to be members of the NAACP. Our children were told to always behave in a certain way whenever they were in public, especially Black boys and young men. We even had to go to the back doors of Whites if you wanted to speak with your parent who was working in their home. On a personal note, my family lived on Mr. Whitakers farm as sharecroppers from 1956 until I left home in 1960. I remember going over to the house to tell my mom something after school and she was working in the front part of the house. I went to the front door and was talking to her with the screen door closed and Ms. Whitaker came up and told me to go to the back door. She also told my mother to tell me not to do it again. I shared with my mother that this made no sense to me and I did not care what Ms. Whitaker wanted. That one experience for me carried over into adulthood while working at Kaiser. I would not go into the back door of our personnel office even though it was closer to the parking lot and easier to enter. This was also during the time in our country that

none of the current laws were on the books for equal rights in voting, public accommodations for using restrooms, eating at counters, riding in the front of the bus, staying in hotels, etc. Fast forward to 2012 and the last election with Blacks being better educated, occupying various positions in government, corporations, the military, and better organized to combat the efforts of those who wanted to turn back the hands of time. We voted. And we voted at a higher rate than expected. The NAACP, National Action Network, National Urban League, National Council of Negro Women and local Black owned newspapers went to work to spread the word that racism had raised its head to take away our right to vote for the sole purpose of getting rid of President Barack Obama. Up to that point many Blacks were proud of him but had not seen where much change had taken place in our fight as American citizens. Our unemployment rate was still double that of Whites and there remained other disparities in healthcare, education, and wealth. That is when our senior citizens rose out of their sick beds and had someone take them to the polls. For the first time in our democracy since we have been able to vote, Blacks voted at a higher percentage than Whites and other groups according to the census department. We voted at a rate of 66.2% as compared to 64.1% for Whites. Many experts had predicted that Blacks would not turnout in high numbers because the historical position of voting for the nation’s first Black president had been accomplished, well they were wrong. People killed Medgar Evers in the hopes of preventing us from electing someone who looks out for the best interest of all the people they govern. Electing people who want all citizens to have access to better education, healthcare, the right to marry who you love, the right for women to earn equal pay and have choices on how to control their bodies, the right to work without harassment in the workforce, the right for workers to organize as a union if they so desire. Yes and the right to vote without having to have special government identification and fear of losing everything guaranteed in our constitution. I am proud of those who took the time to vote in 2012 and so would Medgar Evers.

Longtime Riverside Resident and Social Activist Harry Hood Remembered Riverside

R

iverside volunteer Harry Joseph Hood, 87, who had been active in more than a dozen civic and religious organizations, many promoting social justice, died last week, at Sunrise at Canyon Crest in Riverside. “He enjoyed being involved in causes he believed in,” said his wife, June O’Connor, who was head of the religious studies department at UC Riverside. Hood was past president of the United Nations Association chapter and said in 2008 the group’s goals and principles, talking about differences and finding common ground, united his other involvement. He was also active with The Group, a Riverside public policy advocacy organization focused mostly on issues concerning the Black community; the Latino Network; Office on Aging; League of Women Voters; Seasons of Grace, Social Justice Committee at St. Andrew’s Newman Center; Book Club Sunday, Police Advisory Committee;

Riverside Coalition for Police Accountability; Uptown Kiwanis Club; AARP; and the Current Events and Friday Morning Discussion groups at Janet Goeske Senior Center. Hood always looked for the good in other people, said Ofelia Valdez-Yeager, who worked with him in the Latino Network and other causes. “Harry was a person who just lit up the room when he came in,” Valdez-Yeager said. ”He brought so many individuals together.” She said he inspired many people, including her daughters, to volunteer to build a house for Habitat for Humanity. Hood retired in 1992 as an administrator at the University of La Verne, where he spent almost 20 years as a teacher and administrator. He and O’Connor had moved to Riverside in 1972, a month after they married and when she was offered a position at UCR. He had previously been a Catholic priest in

the Marianist Order, working as an educator in Switzerland and Puerto Rico. After leaving the priesthood, he met O’Connor in Philadelphia. They have one daughter, Meagan, a school psychologist in San Diego.

Riverside Ranks 35th On Annual Fit Cities List ACSM American Fitness Index™ provides America’s largest metro areas with an annual ‘physical’ Report designed to assist with community-level efforts to improve health and fitness Indianapolis

R

iverside ranked 35th in the American College of Sport Medicine’s (ACSM) American Fitness Index™ (AFI), which measures the health and community fitness status of the 50 largest metropolitan areas in the United States. Similar to an annual physical or wellness exam, the sixth annual report evaluates the preventive health behaviors, levels of chronic disease conditions, health care access and community resources and policies that encourage healthy and fit lifestyles. Included in the report’s latest edition are benchmarks for each data indicator to highlight areas that need improvement. The metropolitan statistical area (MSA) of RiversideSan Bernardino-Ontario scored 42.5 (out of 100 possible points) in the 2013 report, down one spot from last year. In 2012, the metro area ranked 34th with a score of 43.1. Minneapolis-St. Paul achieved a high score of 76.4 to capture the top ranking for the third consecutive year.

Riverside ranked 37th on personal health indicators related to health behaviors, chronic health conditions and health care access. The area ranked 37th on community/environmental indicators associated to the built environment, recreational facilities, park-related expenditures, physical education requirements and primary health care providers. “We have issued the American Fitness Index each year since 2008 to help health advocates and community leaders improve the quality of life in their hometowns,” said Walter Thompson, Ph.D., FACSM, chair of the AFI Advisory Board. “As urban areas attract more and more residents, it’s imperative for cities to create a built environment, fund amenities and form policies that get residents active and encourage healthy lifestyles.” To assist with measurement and to provide a baseline measure of health and fitness status, ACSM worked with the Indiana University School of Family Medicine

and a panel of 26 health and physical activity experts on the methodology of the AFI data report. Researchers analyzed the data gleaned from U.S. Census data, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), The Trust for the Public Land City Park Facts and other existing research data in order to give a scientific, accurate snapshot of the health and fitness status at a metropolitan level. For a complete list of Riverside’s areas of excellence and improvement priorities, plus a breakdown of the components that helped make up its score, please visit the AFI website at AmericanFitnessIndex.org and download the metro area report. *Scores have been rounded to the nearest tenth of a point, resulting in some apparent ties; however, the rankings are based on the full, calculated scores that were not equal in those cases.

Don’t Let Mylar Balloons Ruin Grads’ Special Days

SCE reminds its customers that helium-filled metallic balloons can cause power outages Rosemead

J

une is a special month for all grads as customers celebrate their graduating youth. Unfortunately, this time of the year also brings an increase in power outages caused by Mylar balloons that get tangled up in power lines. These colorful, helium-filled metallic balloons often are given as gifts to celebrate these special occasions, but if they are accidentally let go into the air, they can cause power outages that can last for a few minutes to hours. Southern California Edison (SCE) asks customers to keep these balloons indoors, and if they are used outdoors, to keep them tightly secured to a heavy weight to prevent them from floating away. “June is a special month for many families, and we want to make sure the use of these metallic balloons doesn’t spoil the celebrations when they float into power lines and cause short-circuits and outages,” said Bill Messner, SCE’s manager, Safety Operations. “These are definitely outages that can be avoided.”

In the last several years, SCE has experienced close to 2,000 power outages caused by balloons. In 2012, there were 583 balloon-related outages, the highest since 2007. Here are some simple safety tips for handling metallic balloons: • Keep metallic balloons indoors, and never release them outside. • Helium-filled metallic balloons can drift and come in contact with high-voltage lines and cause power outages, so be sure to attach a weight heavy enough to prevent them from floating away. When selling helium-filled metallic balloons, retailers are required by law to attach a weight heavy enough to prevent them from floating away. Never attach streamers to any balloon — latex or metallic. Do not attempt to retrieve a balloon or any foreign object tangled in power lines. Instead, call SCE at 800-611-1911 and report the problem.

More information on metallic balloon safety can be found at www.SCE.com. Follow us on Twitter (www.twitter. com/SCE) and like us on Facebook (www.facebook.com/SCE).

pointofview Return on Networking – the ROI of Social Media

I

Marsha Friedman CEO EMSi Public Relations Marsha Friedman is a 23year veteran of the public relations industry. She is the CEO of EMSI Public Relations (www.emsincorporated.com), a national firm that provides PR strategy and publicity services to corporations, entertainers, authors and professional firms. Marsha is the author of Celebritize Yourself and she can also be heard weekly on her Blog Talk Radio Show, EMSI’s PR Insider every Thursday at 3:00 PM EST. Follow her on Twitter: @marshafriedman.

was never a fan of the cocktail party-variety networking scene. I will never be one to dart around a room shoving business cards into people’s hands. I prefer meaningful conversations with people, getting to know them and vice versa.

and she’d heard me at a speaking engagement.

But social media networking? That’s something different altogether. Done right, it’s never a hit-andrun. Rather, it consists of building relationships over months and even years by sharing information – both professional and personal – through posts, comments and responding to questions in various online communities.

But the next thing he said came as a complete surprise.

What’s the return on investment, the ROI, for putting that kind of time into social media? Actually, it’s called the RON – the “return on networking.” And for me, it’s huge. I’ve been on Facebook for five years; I also have Twitter, Google+ and LinkedIn accounts, among others. All totaled, I’m now approaching 100,000 friends, followers and connections. Those followers expose my name and message to their audiences every time they “like” one of my posts or share one of my links. Recently, someone re-tweeted something I’d shared on Twitter – he had 130,000 followers! That’s a potential audience of 130,000 people I likely would have never reached otherwise. Talk about exposure! Who knows how many of those people may someday become my clients? Who cares? I’ll still consider the exposure a good return on networking. Here’s why. The RON of social media isn’t always tangible, not immediately, anyway. By establishing a continued presence online through regularly sharing content of use to my followers, I’m building my platform and my reputation as an expert. That grows in surprising ways – and it lives in surprising places. A recent case in point: Late last year, I got a call from a prominent New York City hair stylist, the director of a salon in one of that city’s premier department stores. He wanted to talk about some publicity needs and what my company could do to help him.

8

VOICE | JUNE 20, 2013 | theievoice.com

When I asked how he got my name, he explained he’d written some books over the years with a co-author,

Well, that made sense. Speaking at conferences is still a great way to get your name out while also building credibility.

“So, then I contacted the corporate office (of the department store chain) and asked what PR agency they would recommend.” And they recommended me and my company! I don’t know a soul in the corporate offices of that highend retail chain. I can only guess they learned of me through social media. Just being on Twitter or Google+ isn’t enough, of course. You have to make a diligent effort to regularly post content that people find valuable, including links to informative articles, tips relevant to your topic, and/ or informed insights on topics in the news. You also have to “be a human,” as our lead social media strategist, Jeni Hinojosa, likes to say. She and our other social media producers encourage clients to send photos when they go on vacation, celebrate milestones or engage in hobbies. Posting those photos with a comment adds a personal touch that allows followers to connect on a more emotional level. Our social media producers also make sure clients’ personalities shine in their posts, showing their sense of humor and letting followers in on the other things they care about, whether it’s victims of a natural disaster or a favorite charity. Interaction is equally important. Strive to respond to every comment or question posted on your networking sites. Interacting is engaging, and people who are engaged tend to be happy followers. The more you take part in conversations via comments and responses, the more lively and visible your presence becomes. The RON includes increased traffic to your website; increased trust in your brand and what you’re selling; and greater word of mouth than you could ever hope for by attending a cocktail party or even a speaking engagement.

New Restaurant to Open in Downtown Riverside D-Dog -- the latest food experience is planning to serve hungry foodies in Downtown Riverside, July located on University Ave between Lemon and Lime Streets, next door to Back to the Grind Coffee Shop. So, what’s a “D-Dog” you might ask? It is simply an affectionate nickname for a retired Riverside Police Department Lieutenant named Darryl Hurt, who together with his partner, Laurie Brower, are contributing to Riverside’s renaissance by creating a unique environment for a fast casual All American Cuisine restaurant. Is it a sports bar? Although it features 13 televisions showing all your favorite sporting events, the definition would be too narrow. D-Dog’s combines the feel of Old Riverside with a rustic industrial charm that includes historical depictions as part of its decor, with an expansive beer and wine bar, while embracing a contemporary blend of fast and friendly service. They will be serving build-your-own, specialty hot dogs and hamburgers, as well as hot wings and salads. Don’t forget to join them for Daily Happy Hour. The planned opening is for the beginning of July. Continue reading Voice for exact day and time of the July opening.

Taming Bad Breath Dear Dr. Levister: I’ve tried everything to curb my bad breath. I brush and floss after meals and at bedtime, avoid onions, garlic and most spicy foods. What can I do to tame this embarrassing problem? M.T. Dear M.T.: Walk into most any store and find shelves overflowing with mints, mouthwashes and other products designed to help people combat and prevent bad breath. Yet these products represent at best only a temporary fix for (halitosis) known as bad breath. Most bad breath originates in the mouth. The causes are numerous from eating onions and garlic, poor dental hygiene, dry mouth, gum diseases, smoking cigarettes/cigars to sinus infections and other throat conditions. Most mouthwashes rely on alcohol to kill germs and strong minty scents to drown out odors. While I strongly recommend that you

schedule a full checkup with your dentist to rule out gum disease or other dental problems that could be causing your halitosis, there is a mouthwash on the shelf that has bad breath sufferers talking again. The mouthwash is called SmartMouth, previously sold under the less catchy name TriOral. The product claims to use a different approach to taming bad breath. SmartMouth, manufactured by St. Louisbased Triumph Pharmaceuticals, comes in two separate pump bottles. One bottle contains sodium chlorite, a cleansing agent that combines with sulfurous gases to blunt their noxious smell. The other bottle contains zinc (in the form of zinc chloride), a mineral that discourages germs from releasing the gases in the first place. Users are instructed to mix four pumps of each bottle in a small cup and rinse for 30 to 60 seconds. Combining the two

solutions creates a temporary burst of free zinc ions designed to attack germs. The product is said to provide 12-hour protection. SmartMouth is sold in most drugstores and grocery stores. The product costs around $10.00 and if used as instructed lasts about 15 days. If you’re old school like me, good daily dental hygiene, routine cleanings plus an occasional shot of mouthwash will do the job.

Tomás Morales Invested As CSUSB’s Fourth President

hen CSU San Bernardino student body president Jimmy Walker first met presidential finalist Tomas Morales he was nervous, he told the audience of campus leaders, regional education leaders, and representatives of the local community at last week’s Presidential Investiture ceremony for the college’s fourth president. Morales asked Walker what he planned to do over the summer break, and he explained he was looking forward to fishing with his dad. The exchange was brief. Imagine Walker’s surprise when he saw Morales for a second time in the fall of 2012, when now President Morales asked him without any prompting how the fishing trip went. Clearly Morales is student focused and people focused. “The university has a bright future under Dr. Morales,” Walker said during his remarks. “Since Dr. Morales joined our university family he has truly exemplified what it means to be a leader. It is under his leadership that this university will continue to grow and

prosper.” The Presidential Investiture ceremony, which was a part of the university’s commencement weekend celebration, formally invested Morales as CSUSB’s fourth president. Morales has served as president of the college since August 2012. In recognition of Morales’ commitment to public higher education and the role it plays in shaping the communities, the theme of the Presidential Investiture was “Transforming Lives and Communities Through Higher Education.” He “has dedicated his professional life to improving access and quality in public higher education,” said CSU Chancellor Timothy White before formally investing Morales as president. “He is also a strategic thinker and innovator who has the skills to help this university navigate the path ahead – a path of significant change, great opportunity, and profound importance to our state.” “We have had a wonderful year getting to know President Morales, and we truly appreciate how clearly he understands what faculty need

in order to be able to provide a high quality education for our students,” said Jodie Ullman, CSUSB professor of psychology and chair of the Faculty Senate. Morales has served as an educator and administrative leader in higher education for more than 37 years, and is one of the few higher education administrators in the United States who has held senior administrative positions at the three largest public university systems in the nation: The California State University, The State University of New York, and The City University of New York. The California State University Board of Trustees selected Morales as CSUSB’s president in May 2012, and he officially took office on Aug. 15. He is just the fourth president in the history of the university since it opened in 1965, following founding president John M. Pfau (1962-1982), Anthony H. Evans (1982-

1997) and Albert K. Karnig (1997-2012). During his remarks Morales thanked the previous CSUSB presidents for their service to the university; both Karnig and Evans, were in attendance. The third, founding President Pfau, died in March 2012. His daughter, Madelaine Pfau was there to represent the family. “I am privileged to follow three exemplary leaders, each of whom has his own defining legacy as president,” Morales said. “Our founding president, John Pfau, took office before the first buildings were constructed, literally growing the campus from the ground up. Anthony Evans followed and lifted Cal State San Bernardino to new levels, adding the Palm Desert Campus. Al Karnig advanced our presence locally, regionally and nationally, while achieving record enrollments. Each of our previous presidents raised the bar higher and helped make CSUSB the university it is today.” “It is a great honor for me as I stand before continued on page 16

Celebrating Black

Digital History By Dr. Daniel Walker

n recent months, a group of Gospel music pioneers came to USC to get a peek at the Gospel Music History Archive (GMHA), a joint project of the USC Digital Library, the Center for Religion and Civic Culture (CRCC), and the Black Voice Foundation for Media, History and the Arts. The visit was an emotional one for me. For the past five years, Matt Gainer, Tim Stanton, and Giao Luong, and I have been working to make this project a reality. During that time there have been many fits and starts but the vision to create a high quality digital archive tracing the growth and development of Gospel Music and the expressive culture of the African American church has remained the same. GMHA is part of a larger effort by CRCC to chronicle the African American religious experience. For me the work is about giving scholars, congregants, filmmakers, journalists, and the general public access to the materials needed to paint a more nuanced picture of Black life in America. Almost 10 years ago, I set out to write a book about an obscure early Gospel musician named Arizona Dranes. Once I listened to a reissue of her collected works from the Scotland-based Document Records, I was hooked. The best way I can describe her music was to use the term “Gospel Rag.” In terms of instrumentation, a Dranes composition sounds like it came from Scott Joplin, the king of Ragtime. In terms of lyrics, her music is definitely Holiness-Pentecostal. As I searched to find other links that might help uncover Dranes’ story I ran across a number of other musicians who shared her penchant for confounding the sacred and the secular. Perfecting a genre often referred to by scholars as the “Holy Blues,” I soon found out that other performers such as Utah Smith, Ford Washington McGee, and Blind Willie Johnson all shared the

same denominational affiliation as Dranes—they were all members of the Memphis-based Church of God in Christ (COGIC). Once a peripheral religious group often ostracized for their austere lifestyle, COGIC is now the largest Pentecostal and largest African American religious denomination in America. When I went to Memphis to view the church archives, I quickly found what I was looking for when I went to search for documents related to Gospel Music generally, there was no archive. It was this hurdle that compelled me to first create the Gospel Music History Project and then to approach Donald Miller at CRCC about creating a digital archive focused on Gospel Music. Over the years we have endured administrative changes and a lack of funding, but the GMHA train has kept chugging along. With initial funding from the Zumberge Research and Innovation Fund and another grant from the Flora Thornton Foundation we were able to build the archive and begin populating it with content. In addition to songbooks, photographs, and traditional documents, we were also able to photograph and make audio and digital recordings of individuals and churches central to the music’s development in California. One of these key pieces was Victory Baptist Church. Located just blocks away from USC at 48th and McKinley, Victory Baptist was a center of both musical and political expression for the throngs of African Americans who settled in the neighborhoods along Central Avenue after World War II. In addition to its legendary pastor, the Rev. Arthur Atlas Peters, the church was also the first Black congregation to be featured on a weekly local television broadcast. Through its pulpit and choir stands passed some of the most important figures in Black life. Including the likes

of Mahalia Jackson and the Clara Ward Sisters, it was from Victory’s pulpit that Martin Luther King Jr. addressed the national media following the

Victory Baptist television show. To watch her reaction as she viewed the materials related to Victory and the beautiful photographs and compelling video that we created after interviewing her in 2008 was emotional for the both of us. While I can’t describe what was going on in Ms. Preston’s heart, for me the day embodied all that the GMHA was supposed to be: scholarly and entertaining. The subject matter was presented in a format that mirrored the deep level of respect that I have for both the music and the people that create it. It was that all too infrequent occurrence when a historical production actually connects with the people and communities that lie at the heart of the story.

assassination of Malcolm X. The visit to USC included gospel pioneers Edna Tatum (famed Gospel announcer and host of KPFK’s Gospel Classics), Chicagobased musicians/directors Barbara and Ira Lynn, Seventh Day Adventist Elder Jerry Warren, Bishop L. Daniel Williams (former president of the Los Angeles Baptist Minister’s Conference) and CRCC’s Mark Whitlock (Pastor of Christ Our Redeemer A.M. E. Church). The legendary Rodena Preston, pianist and choir director, also joined the tour. Preston is one of the co-founders of James Cleveland’s Gospel Music Workshop and the sister of pop and soul icon Billie Preston. It was the visual of her mother’s hands, pianist Robbie Preston, which opened every weekly

Dr. Jean Peacock Retires from CSUSB They came and filled the room in the San Manuel Student Center at the Cal State University San Bernardino (CSUSB), to attend the reception for the planned retirement of Jean Peacock, PhD, Assistant Dean, College of Social & Behavioral Sciences, CSUSB. They came, wished her fun, relaxation, and joy in her new found time for leisure, but they didn't want to let her go. Speaker after speaker, campus administrators, fellow faculty in the Psychology Department, staff members from around the campus, and of course students, people she taught, mentored, encouraged, and befriended, all spoke glowingly about her and her commitment to them and to CSUSB. 1 - Members 2

The figures, filed with the CPUC by regulated utilities and telecommunications companies, are reported in Greenlining’s latest annual Supplier Diversity Report Card. “If you believe that entrepreneurship is key to prosperity, then today’s report is extremely good news,” said Greenlining Institute General Counsel Samuel S. Key findings in the Report Card include:

• California’s regulated utilities and telecommunications companies reported $8.1 billion in spending with minority-, women- and disabled veteran-owned businesses in 2012. • Contracting with minority-owned businesses increased by $1.5 billion from 2011 to 2012. • Two companies, Southern California Gas and AT&T, are moving towards 30 percent total spending with minority-owned businesses. • Seven companies achieved over 20 percent spending with minority-owned businesses in 2012. • While the overall trend was positive, spending with Latino-owned businesses declined for most companies this year. California utilities and telecom companies are putting real dollars into California’s diverse communities.”

Spending with diverse-owned businesses in the categories of legal and professional services continued to lag.

You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be

postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 877-484-9942 or 800- 2802832 or visit this Internet Web site www.USA-Foreclosure.com or www. Eliza Daniely-Woolfolk, CEO, Alternatives to Domestic Violence Eliza Daniely-Woolfolk has served as CEO of Alternatives to Domestic Violence (ADV) since 1997. ADV is a multi-service agency serving western Riverside County. Since 1978, ADV has evolved and expanded to provide a continuum of services ranging from prevention, early intervention, to crisis intervention and has reached thousands of domestic violence victims and their families. ADV continues to be recognized statewide as a leader in progressive approaches to empowerment and advocacy for clients seeking to establish a healthy, violent-free environment in which to raise the next generation. Services are provided through locations in Riverside, Corona, Hemet, Beaumont and the Riverside Family Justice Center, in addition to a 60-bed residential facility and private counseling center. Information on all programs and services can be obtained by visiting www.alternativestodv.org.

to note that the sequence of making a decision, choosing a certain path, and then taking action has a consequence. This overwhelming process speaks to the many reasons why women and men stay in abusive relationships. For persons who have decided to leave, ADV’s 60 bed emergency shelter and residential facility is available for them and designed to assist victims in moving from a state of crisis to one of stability and self-sufficiency. The facility offers a transitional living program, licensed child development center (for children exposed to trauma) and an adult training center onsite. These elements help families and are critical to their ability to move forward with their lives, notwithstanding the services at our emergency shelter, our outreach offices offers programs for women, men and children in additional to counseling and other varied services for families at our counseling center.

ADV is a catalyst for change as it relates to the public’s perception of this issue and the resources allocated to address the expanded focus on mental, substance abuse, and health related impacts. It Is also important to highlight the role of the judicial system and the relationship of public policy to domestic violence. Each of these areas are examples of the need to address and have dialogue concerning the broader implications of domestic violence particularly when the discussion centers on children. Considerations should also be given to the cultural implications and the role of the faith community in being a beacon for change. We know that venture capitalists tend to invest in new ideas and innovative solutions. It is my position that we need to encourage the engagement of social investors who agree with the proposition, as we do, that domestic violence is not just an issue that impacts the lives of women - but that it has a much more expansive impact on families, local communities and by extension society.

ADV did not get away unscathed from the decreases in revenue in recent years related to external factors including funding reductions from the state of California. This economic process required deliberate business decisions to better address the agency’s overall operations. These actions, while challenging, afforded a favorable time to reflect, assess, plan and move forward with specific attention to the agency’s longer term sustainability. We have taken concrete steps to be able to take advantage of the options in the post-recession future. Through the governance of our board of directors, the efforts of an amazing staff and the support of our community stakeholders and funding agencies, ADV has made the crucial pivot. And while the measurable change has been a slow process; we are encouraged by the results of our efforts.

We often say at our agency that ‘happiness ever after’ is a process for individuals and the families we serve and that the measurement of success is dependent upon many factors. It should be stated that positive outcomes do occur, however, it is equally important

Department of Public Social Services, and Riverside Police Department were awarded a three-year grant by the U.S. Department of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women to provide enhanced training and services for women and men who have experienced abuse later in life. A similar effort, with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department also netted a grant award again, from the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Violence Against Women, to address arrest polices and enforcement of protective orders as it relates to domestic violence and child abuse cases.

ADV has been very effective in developing partnerships and productive collaborations to leverage its capacity and deliver quality services. As result of this approach, ADV jointly with the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office, Riverside County
