They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery but regarding the continuous appropriation of Black history and culture, it seems to be more indicative of the love-hate relationship America has for its Black citizens.
Whether it is tanning to attain the golden radiance of pigmentation, the injection of botox to mimic the fullness of Black lips or the placement of implants to duplicate the ampleness of Black hips, the appropriation of Blackness is the norm in this country and around the world.
However appropriation, when it comes to Blackness, moves beyond appearance, to include the way Black people walk and even the ‘slang some sling’ in the way they talk, to every genre of Black music from blues to jazz to R&B to rap, it is all a part of taking everything from a marginalized group of people who for more than 400 years have remained marginalized and oppressed.
something even more sinister and pervasive. It is how America’s racist power structure uses historical negationism, also called denialism, “for the falsification or distortion of the record” regarding Black history and the legacies of Black leaders. They often take the very words of these leaders and weaponize it to negate or demonize the actions of Blacks who continue the fight for equity in their communities.
Appropriating King
The most glaring example of this is the perverted use of the words and deeds of perhaps Black America’s greatest hero, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) who spent his life–who gave his life–to uplift Black and poor people as human beings deserving of dignity, respect and opportunity.
Over the years we’ve watched Republican legislators and other leaders make their way to

Legacy Bridges Project Gears Up For Annual Charity Drive in its Fight Against Epilepsy
The Legacy Bridges Foundation (LBF), Inc. is preparing for their upcoming modified Clothing Donation Drive-Thru Event that was originally planned for January 14. The nonprofit organization supports individuals and families who suffer from epilepsy and other seizure related disorders with a mission to garner awareness for these conditions and partner with others to find a cure.
According to the Epilepsy Foundation, the disease affects one out of every 26 individuals – 3.4 million people nationwide and over 65 million people globally. 150,000 new cases are diagnosed in the US each year.
As LBF finalized its preparations for the drivethru event, a winter storm pummeled California testing the limits of the state’s infrastructure with flash floods and torrential downpour forcing the organization to postpone the event.
Despite the delay, the organization is still collecting donations until January 27. Drop- offs can be coordinated by calling or texting the office at (951) 374-0933 or sending an email to admin@ legacybridgesfoundation.org.
"Many of us have an abundance of clothing that we no longer wear or an overflow of shoes, accessories and other items that we just don't know what to do with,” said LBF Executive Director Melanee Stovall. “Here's an opportunity to give those unwanted items
a new home. If you haven't already done so, sort through your closets and cupboards and set aside these items.”
The drive accepts gently used and clean clothing, shoes, accessories, books, blankets, small appliances and other home goods. They do not accept encyclopedias, hazardous or construction materials, or weapons. They ask for clothing and textiles to be bagged and for small household goods to be tightly boxed.
“This is a unique two-fold opportunity that we strongly encourage you to participate in, as it will free up space in your homes and allow you to support a local nonprofit organization doing tremendous work,” said Volunteer Director Melody Solomon.
The Legacy Bridges Foundation, Inc. has been recognized by San Bernardino County 5th District Supervisor Joe Baca Jr., Riverside County 5th District Supervisor Jeff Hewitt, Mayor of Fontana Acquanetta Warren, Mayor of Rialto Deborah Robertson, 64th District Assemblymember Mike Gipson, 47th District Assemblymember and Majority Leader Eloise Reyes Gomez, and 36th District Congressman Raul Ruiz for the work they are doing to raise awareness of epilepsy and other seizure related disorders and for supporting those suffering from these illnesses.
For more information or to volunteer, email LBF at admin@legacybridgesfoundation.org or call (951)374-0933.
New Drug May Change Course of Early Alzheimer’s in a Meaningful Way
Among the 65 years and older population in the U.S., 14% of Black people have Alzheimer’s disease, followed
Breanna Reeves | StaffRoughly 6.5 million Americans 65 years of age and older were living with Alzheimer’s disease in 2022, according to a report by the Alzheimer’s Association. The number of people living with the disease doubles every five years beyond the age of 65.
Among the 65 years and older population in the U.S., 14% of Black people have Alzheimer’s disease, followed by 12% of the Hispanic population and 10% of the White population.
While there is no cure for Alzheimer’s, there are currently five drugs for treatment approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA): donepezil, rivastigmine, galantamine, memantine, memantine combined with donepezil. A sixth drug called aducanumab (Aduhelm), manufactured by Biogen, became the first drug that targets amyloid to be granted accelerated approval by the FDA in 2021.
New hope for early stages
The FDA recently added a seventh drug to the list as of Jan. 6, 2023 with the accelerated approval of leqembi (lecanemab-irmb), manufactured by Eisai and Biogen. Leqembi was granted accelerated approval based on Phase 3 of a randomized, controlled clinical trial. Results from the trial
demonstrated the drug’s ability to remove amyloid from the brain, which could allow people in the mild dementia stage of Alzheimer’s to maintain their mental abilities.
“This treatment can change the course of Alzheimer’s in a meaningful way for people in the early stages of the disease, allowing more time to participate in daily life and live independently,” Maria C. Carrillo, Ph.D., Alzheimer’s Association chief science officer, said in a release.
Alzheimer’s is characterized by the buildup of amyloid which clump together in the brain to form plaques that disrupt cell function. Lequembi, administered intravenously every other week, removes amyloid from the brain.
In Phase 3 of the study of leqembi, a total of 1,795 participants from 50 to 90 years of age with early Alzheimer’s were enrolled — 898 received the drug and 897 received the placebo. The 18-month study found that for 698 participants there were “greater reductions in brain amyloid burden with lecanemab than with placebo.”
“Lecanemab reduced markers of amyloid in early Alzheimer’s disease and resulted in moderately less decline on measures of cognition and

SB County Dept of Public Health Urges Locals to Share Concerns About Health Access and Equity
The San Bernardino County Department of Public Health is asking residents for their input on health concerns in the community as part of a joint initiative with Community Vital Signs. Residents will be able to communicate what concerns they have regarding health access and equity in their community.
Residents can complete the survey here. Although the survey is anonymous, it does ask questions about basic demographic information such as age or race/ethnicity in order to “understand the different experiences in the various communities in our county.” The survey focuses on topics such as how residents feel about their quality of life in the region and asks about their experiences with the effects of health inequities.
“We want to hear from county residents to learn about the issues affecting their health and their community. Completing the survey will provide data to accurately understand patterns in health inequities and strategies to improve them,” said County Health Officer Dr. Michael Sequeira in a press release. “Our collective goal
is to support all efforts that help residents live a long healthy life.”
The last community health assessment survey was published in 2020 and highlighted health trends in San Bernardino County between 2015 and 2019. According to the “2020 San Bernardino County: Our Community Vital Signs Health Status Data Report,” the top community health concern was mental health. Survey participants voiced that throughout San Bernardino County there were “not enough mental health crisis centers and convenient hours.”
When survey is completed
After the survey closes and the data is analyzed, results will be shared with the community to discuss which health issues should be prioritized and to identify ways to address those issues. Once the Community Vital Signs Report is completed, a Community Transformation Plan will be created in response to the needs identified in the assessment.

Thurmond oversees the education of six million PreK-12 students in over 1,000 public school districts across California.
Although SPI is a non-partisan office, Thurmond drew support from many of the state’s top Democrats in his bid for re-election, including from Gov. Gavin Newsom, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and several members of the California Legislative Black Caucus. He was also endorsed by unions across the state, including

Latest COVID-19 Variant XBB.1.5 Spreading Quickly, Overcoming Some Components of Immunity
Breanna Reeves | StaffAlittle over one week into the New Year, many continue to wonder: Will COVID ever go away?
The short answer is: No. The long answer is more complicated as the world continues to navigate the changes influenced by the pandemic and accept that the virus is here to stay in one capacity or another. Like influenza and other respiratory viruses, some health officials suggest COVID could become a seasonal virus that peaks during winter months — in other words, endemic.
“When speaking about COVID, I think it is important to remember that COVID was the third leading cause of death in 2020, the third leading cause of death in 2021 and also the third leading cause of death in 2022,” said Dr. Ben Neuman, Chief Virologist of the Global Health Research Complex at Texas A&M University, during a media briefing on Jan. 6.
“Anyone telling you that COVID is over is misinformed, at the very least.”
Throughout the pandemic, several COVID-19 variants have emerged, with the initial Omicron strain (BA.1) and its subvariants recognized as the most transmissible and more severe than previous variants.
While influenza peaked five weeks ago and cases are decreasing, and RSV peaked eight weeks ago with cases also decreasing steadily, COVID cases are rising as a result of a new subvariant called XBB.1.5.
The new year brought with it XBB.1.5 which has spread rapidly across the East Coast. The mutations of the subvariant have made it easy for the virus to evade immunity. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) noted that XBB.1.5 is spreading quickly and accounted for 27% of COVID cases in the U.S. last week. XBB.1.5 is more prevalent on the East Coast, accounting for 72% of infections across the region.
“XBB.1.5 appears to grow well and have a little bit better affinity for the receptors in our lungs. It is better at holding on to people, essentially, than some of the previous strains it evolved
from,” Dr. Neuman explained. “It appears that it is very infectious and is overcoming at least some components of immunity.”
Last September, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorized an update of COVID boosters which contain components of Omicron variants BA.4 and BA.5. As of Dec. 9, 2022, eligible individuals from six months of age and older are able to get the bivalent vaccine following the completion of the primary vaccine series. Bivalent vaccination rates across the state remain low with just 22.5% of the state’s population vaccinated with the booster and 15%
of the total U.S. population.
Research studies on COVID-19 strains similar to XBB.1.5 indicate a need to update the vaccine strain as the current bivalent booster offers limited protection against the new subvariant. After not meeting since October 2022, the FDA’s Vaccine Advisory Committee is scheduled to meet on Jan. 26, 2023 to discuss the state of COVID-19.
“Anyone telling you that COVID is over is misinformed, at the very least,” said said Dr. Ben Neuman, Chief Virologist of the Global Health Research Complex at
A&M University. (source: bio.tamu.edu).
What it means

“What does endemic really mean? Endemic means
“Living the Dream” San Bernardino Martin
This Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the city of San Bernardino gathered at “Living the Dream,” a Martin Luther King Parade and Extravaganza sponsored by the Southern California Black Chamber of Commerce and hosted in West San Bernardino. The event held space for the community to watch performances, hear from elected officials and explore vendor booths.
Highlights of the day included a performance from the Grammy nominated group hailing from Rialto, J.J. Fad, and an inspiring message to the community from newly elected Mayor Helen Tran.
“[MLK] never led alone. He led with community. And that is what I will do as your newly elected mayor, show that we lead together and that we lead with truth, light, and unity, because we deserve it,” Tran said.

Latest COVID-19, continued from page 9 that an infection is still circulating in the area or community, but it’s not disrupting daily life. Is it disrupting our daily life?” Dr. Oliver Brooks, Chief Medical Officer at Watts Healthcare, explained. “I would say now, yes. But can we move to where it is not disrupting our daily life? We can get there.”
Testing, vaccinating and treating are the tools that will lead to COVID becoming endemic, according to Dr. Brooks.
In December 2022, the United States Postal Service again began mailing four free COVID-19 test kits to each household. U.S. residents can still order test kits here. Health officials encourage the public to continue to test and report positive COVID-19 results to determine how to treat infected persons.
COVID-19 treatment options are more widely available, but require authorization from a provider. Treatment options include oral antiviral pills that can be prescribed and picked up at a local pharmacy and intravenous infusions at a health facility.
While the time for an updated vaccine is here, health officials address the importance of getting the bivalent booster to offer any protection against COVID-19 variants as opposed to no protection and waning protection. The California
Department of Public Health noted that during November 2022, unvaccinated people were 2.9 times more likely to die from COVID-19 than people who were vaccinated with at least a primary series.
“People need to get their second booster. I
KEEPING IT REAL
think concepts of how well [the bivalent booster] responds and the new variant are well and good, however, the vaccine is safe and effective, and there’s no reason not to get vaccinated,” Dr. Brooks urged.
Life expectancy dropped in 2020 due to COVID-19. In 2019, people born in the U.S. had a life expectancy of 79 years. In 2020, that dropped to 77 years. In 2021, that number dropped again, to 76.1 years, according to a CDC Provisional Life Expectancy report.
“The non-Hispanic American Indian or Alaska Native (AIAN) experienced the greatest decline in life expectancy (1.9 years) between 2020 and 2021. The decline was due primarily to increases in mortality due to COVID-19 (21.4%),” the report noted.
The Black population had the third greatest decline in life expectancy (0.7 years) between 2020 and 2021 after the White population (1 year), primarily due to increases in mortality due to COVID-19 (35%).
“People have become complacent. They are not taking COVID-19 seriously,” Dr. Brooks opined. “We [have] got to get away from being complacent. Do we need another million people to die before we stop being complacent? What more do we have to do?”

the Edmund Pettis bridge on the anniversary of Bloody Sunday only to scurry back to Washington, D. C. and work against passage of legislation supporting voting rights, criminal justice reform, healthcare and legislation to reduce the financial burden of those seeking higher education.
We’ve watched, listened or read again and again as leaders, both political and ecumenical, take the brilliant and inspiring words of King and twist them to denigrate the same acts of rebellion against injustice and tyranny that Martin Luther Kings Jr. himself spent his life rallying against.
King’s daughter, Regina King tweeted about this in January, 2021.
Take for example the King quote, “We must
pursue peaceful ends through peaceful means.” This is often used to criticize Black protests when in reality the quote actually had nothing to do with Black protests, but was instead, a statement against America’s controversial participation in the Vietnam War.
We’ve even seen it in the area of ‘commemorative stewardship’ as it relates to King’s monument in Washington, D. C.
The goal of “commemorative stewardship” is to ensure credibility in speaking on, making decisions about, and ultimately controlling interpretations of public memories. With that in mind, how did King’s D.C. monument initially include a paraphrased quote of possibly one of the most memorable speeches of perhaps the greatest orators in the nation’s history?
The paraphrased quote, "I was a drum
major for justice, peace and righteousness," was removed from the memorial in 2013. The paraphrase taken from King’s February 4, 1968 sermon in Atlanta, is actually, “Yes, if you want to, say that I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice. Say that I was a drum major for peace. I was a drum major for righteousness.”
Commemorative stewardship is a public obligation and has a commitment to sacred memory for the good of future generations. Had the paraphrased wording not been challenged it would have remained on the statue in perpetuity.
Even presidents are not immune from historical misrepresentation
And then, there is the controversy
Tony Thurmond, continued from page 8 the California Federation of Teachers and California Teachers Association.
United States Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona performed the ceremonial swearing in of Thurmond, who then reflected on his path to the office. The son of a Panamanian immigrant mother and Vietnam veteran father who did not return to his family after the war – Thurmond and his brother were raised by their cousin and relied on public assistance programs and public schools to make it out of poverty.
“I am standing on the shoulders of those relatives who struggle and sacrifice so that we could have a better life,” Thurmond said after he was sworn in. “It was the sacrifices of teachers and classified staff and childcare workers and school administrators who make it possible for me to stand here today as your public servant fighting for six million students in the great state of California.”
Thurmond’s first term coincided with one of the most tumultuous periods in California’s history -- a time, he says, that brought with it
many unforeseen challenges.
Student Proficiency Levels
“We all watched it together. The lives lost and impacted and disrupted by the pandemic,” Thurmond said before pointing out other cultural, social and political developments the country endured as the COVID-19 crisis intensified.
“The killing of George Floyd, fighting hate against the Asian American Pacific Islander community, racism targeted directly to African American families, anti-Semitism, the mistreatment of Latino families, immigrant families, we have seen so much hate all in such a short period of time that we would move into a pandemic and find out that, in a state with all the wealth that we have in California, that a million students could be without a computer,” Thurmond added. “That is the most important thing that they needed to be connected in those early days through remote learning.”
Thurmond says his administration stepped
up to address challenges presented by the pandemic.
“We know that the impact this has had clearly affected student proficiency levels where they are now compared to where they were a few years before the pandemic and of course, a deep, deep impact on the mental health of our students and our families,” he said.
“We've seen a dramatic increase in depression and anxiety and hospitalizations for children and it has been difficult for them,” Thurmond continued. “But our children are more than the sum of their circumstances. They've demonstrated their resiliency, and they're on the path to recovery, and we're going to help them with that because we just secured enough money to recruit 10,000 counselors for our schools in the state of California.”
The addition of counselors is good news for teachers across the state seeking resources to help their students recover and develop in areas outside of academics where school also plays a crucial role for many students. “I was very
continued on page 14
Tony Thurmond, continued from page 13 excited when superintendent Thurman said that there would be 10,000 counselors coming to the school sites because we need that. The emotional health of our students, that is important, that is very important,” said elementary school math teacher and California Teacher of the Year award recipient Bridgette Donald-Blue to California Black Media.
The SPI does not have any legislative role. But Thurmond, who served in the California State Assembly for two terms, sponsored or endorsed several legislative initiatives that may have a profound effect on the future of education in California and the role that schools play to meet the social and emotional needs of students to provide a positive learning environment.
Thurmond said that beginning in the 2022–23 school year, the California Universal School Meal Program will help all students to reach
their full academic potential by providing a nutritiously adequate breakfast and lunch at no charge for all children each school day regardless of individual eligibility.
Thurmond also has initiatives to combat inequities in the school system, including universal preschool for four-year-olds regardless of background, race, zip code, immigration status, or income level. He also launched the Black Student Achievement Taskforce to help quantify the impacts systemic and institutional racism have had on Black students in California.
Thurmond points out that he sponsored legislation to increase funding to the lowest performing students, ban suspension and expulsions in preschools, and secured $90 million for suspensions and chronic absenteeism programming.
Teacher Shortage
“I know the impacts of what happens when our students don't learn to read by third grade. Sadly, they end up dropping out in many cases and in the criminal justice system, and we're

“Longer trials are warranted to determine the efficacy and safety of lecanemab in early Alzheimer’s disease.”
Side effects
Side effects of leqembi are similar to those of aduhelm. Both drugs can cause swelling in the brain or bleeding in the brain, so individuals receiving the drugs will need to be monitored closely. Aduhelm has yet to receive full approval due to controversy regarding the lack of proven effectiveness and dangerous side effects. Medicare is only authorized to cover the drug for patients enrolled in clinical trials as ruled by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

surrounding President Ronald Reagan’s signing of legislation making MLK’s birthday a national holiday. Reagan agreed with disparaging comments about King in written communications between himself and then New Hampshire Governor Meldrim Thomson, a John Birch Society member who urged Reagan to veto the legislation. Thompson considered King ''a man of immoral character'' who associated with communists.
Reagan responded to Thompson stating, ''On the national holiday you mentioned, I have the reservations you have, but here the perception of too many people is based on an image, not reality.”
Leqembi, recently granted accelerated approval by the FDA “can change the course of Alzheimer’s in a meaningful way for people in the early stages of the disease,” said Maria C. Carrillo, Ph.D., Alzheimer’s Association chief science officer. (alz.org).
function than placebo at 18 months but was associated with adverse events,” the authors wrote in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Until leqembi receives full approval by the FDA, it is unlikely that Medicare or private insurers will cover the cost of the drug. Eisai will price the drug at $26,500 per year.
Just days after receiving accelerated approval from the FDA, Eisai and Biogen submitted an authorization application of lecanemab to the European Medicines Agency (EMA).
Tony Thurmond, continued from page 14
going to change the narrative and flip the script. We're going to educate, not incarcerate our kids.” Thurmond repeated a pledge for today’s kindergarteners to be able to read by third grade,” he said.
Recently, some education advocates pointed out that there has been a reported wave of retirements and disincentives that have led to an unprecedented teacher shortage across the nation. In response, Thurmond says he is creating new incentives to draw qualified people into the school system to help students, especially those who are of color.
Reagan’s attitude toward King was not surprising considering how he unapologetically opposed Affirmative Action and how his administration, much like the Replacement theorists of today, openly stoked the fears of anti-white racism.
In the process, Reagan disrespectfully and knowingly misused King’s words to support his argument against Affirmative Action quotas.
''We are committed to a society in which all men and women have equal opportunities to succeed, and so we oppose the use of quotas,'' Reagan said. ''We want a color-blind society. A society, that in the words of Dr. King, judges people not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.''
Reagan’s administration was also accused of working to weaken antipoverty programs and debilitate enforcement of civil rights laws. An effort by the right that continues through today.
“We want to hear from county residents to learn about the issues affecting their health and their community,” said San Bernardino County Health Officer Dr. Michael Sequeira.
“We hope that we hear from a broad range of voices, especially residents who are often underserved, underrepresented, have poorer health and were disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic,” Diana Fox, co-chair of the Community Vital Signs Steering Committee, said.
“We're offering scholarships for anyone who wants to become a teacher. $20,000,” Thurmond told California Black Media. “I sponsored a bill, HB 520, that was focused on how we get more male educators of color. And that bill turned into funding in the state budget. That now means our residency programs can be used to help have male educators of color as part of the beneficiaries of that program.”
The good news is that the complete writings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. are readily available for us to read for ourselves and understand first hand what he said and why he said it. Do not be bamboozled by those who appropriate his words for their own right-wing conservative purpose which so often is the antithesis of King’s life and his words.
Of course, this is just my opinion. I’m keeping it real.
