AMERICA LOVE GUNS MORE THAN IT LOVES ITS CHILDREN
By now, most people are keenly aware of the disturbing news about three mass shootings in California in eight days that resulted in the loss of 18 lives. By Wednesday January 24, only 24 days into the new year, 39 mass shootings have occurred nationwide already.
What is wrong with Americans? Why is there such violence and carnage in this nation? These questions are, of course, rhetorical. I believe we already know the answer.
I say this because Americans are no different than people all over the world, and yet in no other nation are civilians killing each other with such wanton abandon and reckless disregard for human life than American citizens.
What makes us different? This nation’s love affair with guns and the easy access we have to them.
Certainly, most gun owners are responsible but others are not. Americans act as if they need a gun like they do air to breathe, or water to drink, or food to eat, or shelter.

I cannot abide by the National Rifle Association’s argument that “Guns don’t kill people, People do”. I see this statement as a convenient cop-out.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there

UPCOMING SERIES
CENTERPOINT: THE HEALING POWER OF CULTURAL CONNECTIONS
Dear Black Voice News Community,
This is an exclusive invitation for you to join us in the coming weeks and months as we embark on a special series titled, “Centerpoint: The Healing Power of Cultural Connections”.
Black Voice News is actively participating in this California State Library initiative to more intently shine a light on an issue that continues to put lives at risk and pull at the fabric of our communities.
America’s polarizing political climate is fueling acts of violence and hatred by misguided individuals negatively inspired by the toxicity of separateness and superiority that is being fueled by misinformation, fear and irrational distrust.
As disturbing as this is, we recognize one of the surest ways to push back against it is through credible information centered on common experiences and mutual respect.
For more than 50 years, the Black Voice News has acted as a clarion voice of a connected community continuing the legacy and responsibility of the Black press to not only inform, but to do so while also providing solutions to problems through our reporting.
We encourage you to experience the “Stop the Hate” series that will consist of historical perspectives, cross cultural experiences and points of connection, rather than what divides us.
We will accomplish this in part, by looking at human needs that unite us and connect us: food and shelter. The “Stop the Hate” content will be presented through articles, maps, social media platforms, community engagement events, graphics, audio and video.
Our goal is threefold: firstly, to highlight the similarities across cultures by sparking conversations about food; secondly, to explore the historical impact of how segregated housing stymied the accumulation of intergenerational wealth for people of color; and finally, to document the hard realities of hate crimes against African Americans and other groups.
Thank you for your ongoing support of our work. Stay tuned.

Amazon worker Sara Fee said she and her coworkers have to make hard choices.
“Gas or food,” she said. “Nobody wants to live like that.”
This month, Fee returned to work after she was put on paid suspension and investigated by Amazon for organizing in support of workers’ rights. She was also surveilled and targeted by Amazon union busters, officially known as labor and employee relations consultants.
Fee is a key advocate in the movement to establish safe working conditions at the San Bernardino Amazon facility, known as the KSBD Amazon Airhub, where she works. KSBD is one
SAN BERNARDINO AMAZON WORKER SARA FEE FIGHTS RETALIATION
of only three air hubs in the nation. The ongoing crusade for fair wages and safety measures has featured multiple walkouts since August, including pickets and strikes, all of which have garnered national attention.
“We have to continue to fight for a safe work environment and to end the retaliation. It's not always just about the pay; it's about the way they treat the workers,” Fee said during an October 2022 walkout. “[The] workers I work with, they're young, and some of them are injured. They have bad back injuries. It breaks my heart.”
Since the walkout, Fee has continued to speak up for workers rights. Her coworkers describe her as someone who looks out for people's health and safety.
Roughly three months after the walkout,
Fee faced termination. The Warehouse Worker Resource Center, a community-based organization that works closely with and advocates for warehouse workers, reported that Amazon led a “campaign to target and surveil her, primarily using their union-busting firm.”
Fee described the treatment as psychological. Other KSBD employees have described Amazon’s union-busting tactics as an attempt to undermine the work they’re doing.
“Workers at KSBD and across the country are standing up for what we deserve. We have been targeted, threatened, and intimidated by Amazon managers and Amazon consultants and today we are on strike,” said KSBD worker Rex Evans in a press release back in October.

IN THE NEWS
Sara Fee poses for a portrait after speaking about her experience as an Amazon worker at the picket outside of KSBD, the Amazon air hub warehouse in San Bernardino, on October 14, 2022.“We’re working for the biggest corporation in California, Amazon, and I have to choose whether to buy food or gas.” Fee says Amazon has ignored many issues that workers and advocates have raised and that they must continue fighting for safe working conditions and against retaliation. “It’s not always just about the pay. It’s about the way they treat the workers.” (Aryana Noroozi for Black Voice News Newsroom / CatchLight Local)
Sara Fee speaks at the picket held on October 14, 2022. Fee says it breaks her heart to see her coworkers who have sustained serious injuries on the job, many of them “younger than her.” (Aryana Noroozi for Black Voice News Newsroom / CatchLight Local).

F or some, it may be hard to imagine barely escaping alive from one of the biggest mass genocides in world history, or hearing stories about family members who were the victims of a catastrophe of that magnitude. But for Jewish Americans living in California, that scenario is a painful and present truth that they live with, respectfully acknowledging and memorializing it every year.
International Holocaust Remembrance Day (IHRD), commemorated yearly on January 27, is a memorial day established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2005 to honor victims (and their families) who suffered from the German genocide that lasted more than a decade. According to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, the day of commemoration was established for several purposes. Among them are serving as an official date to honor victims of the Nazi regime and promoting Holocaust education worldwide.
In Jewish communities, January 27 is known as Yom HaShoah. Families and communities will often light Yahrzeit candles -- Yahrzeit means anniversary (specifically related to someone’s death) -- to honor those who were murdered in the Holocaust. The candle burns for 24 hours, and it is custom to light it at sundown on the day before Yom HaShoah. Occasionally, electric Yahrzeit candles are used as a substitute and are plugged into a wall in places like hospitals, for safety reasons.
In Los Angeles, at the Holocaust Museum LA, visitors can see firsthand artifacts that were personal items from survivors and other memorabilia. This museum, founded in 1961, is the oldest survivor-founded Holocaust exhibit in the United States that is solely focused on the impact of the mass genocide. The experience is free for students, and the museum offers tours, educational programs, and conversations with survivors meant to inspire critical thinking and show the Holocaust’s current social relevance.

A PAINFUL AND STILL-PRESENT MEMORY: HONORING THE LIVES OF HOLOCAUST VICTIMS
Holocaust Center, says that she is dedicated to raising social awareness about Jewish history and inspiring social responsibility.
“The JFCS Holocaust Center was founded by Holocaust survivors through perseverance and determination to fight antisemitism. We continue to share their testimony with thousands of students each year,” said Schneider. “This week, in honor of International Holocaust Remembrance Day and every week throughout the year, the JFCS Holocaust Center works in partnership with CA teachers to bring lessons of the Holocaust and genocide into classrooms throughout California to inspire social responsibility and moral courage in today’s youth.”

The Holocaust profoundly affected countries in which Nazi crimes were perpetrated, with universal implications and consequences in many other parts of the world
KEEPING IT REAL
America Love, continued from page 3 were just over 334 million Americans as of January 1, 2023. Yet the data show that as far back as 2017, there were already nearly 400 million guns in this country between the police, the military, and civilians. Surprisingly, more than 393 million of those 400 million guns (more than 98%) were in civilian hands. That is the equivalent of 120 firearms for every 100 Americans. No other country on earth comes close to this.
A PEW Research poll conducted in June 2021 found about four-in-ten adults in this country say they live in a household with a gun. This includes 30% who said they personally own one. Not surprisingly, the issue of personal protection topped the list of reasons why gun owners said they owned a firearm.
The PEW survey also found the share of Americans who say gun laws should be stricter has decreased from 60% in September 2019 to a low of 53% in 2021.
The combination of firearms and fear has created a nation of fools, so blinded by their obsession with gun ownership and their Constitutional right to bear arms it seems to supersede all else—even the safety and lives of our children.
In 2022, guns became the number one cause of death among children and adolescents in this country and yet, we as a nation remain “trapped in a ghoulish nightmare", unwilling or unable to lay down our weapons to save the lives of our children. But, of course, we already knew this. It’s a lesson we learn with every shooting on a school campus, with every stray bullet that kills a child in Black and brown neighborhoods, with every child who plays with a gun his/her parents failed to lock away.
How many guns do American citizens need to feel safe? I don’t think there is any amount that will pacify a desire that appears insatiable.
And so, babies die, loved ones cry, gun manufacturers continue to make billions to buy politicians that we elect to do absolutely nothing at the worst and the bare minimum at best to stop the madness. And the cycle
continues…
There are organizations across the country working for change on this issue. If you support their mission, get involved or make a donation to support their efforts. As former President Barack Obama once reminded us, “We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.” We can create an America where everyone’s child can be safe from gun violence.
Of course, this is just my opinion. I’m keeping it real.

IE WOMEN AND ALLIES MARCH TO MARK WHAT WOULD HAVE BEEN ROE vs WADE 50TH ANNIVERSARY

FEATURE STORY
On January 22, 1973, in a 7-2 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled the right to an abortion was protected under the constitutional right to privacy. January 23, 2023 marked the 50th anniversary since the Supreme Court’s historic ruling that became known as Roe v. Wade.
The majority opinion, issued by Justice Harry Blackmun, stated: “This right of privacy, whether it be founded in the Fourteenth Amendment’s concept of personal liberty and restrictions upon state action, as we feel it is, or, as the District Court determined, in the Ninth Amendment’s reservation of rights to the people, is broad enough to encompass a woman’s decision whether or not to terminate her pregnancy.”
Nearly 50 years later, on June 25, 2022, the Supreme Court overturned the landmark ruling following a leaked document of a draft opinion. In a document labeled “Opinion of the Court,” Justice Samuel Alito delivered the opinion that “Roe and [Planned Parenthood v. Casey] must be overruled. It is time to heed the Constitution and return the issue of abortion to the people’s elected representatives.”
Following the overturning of Roe, abortion trigger bans immediately took effect across 13 states, resulting in restrictive access to contraception, abortion bans, and criminalization of those who participate in abortions. Other states, like California, took steps to solidify abortion rights and reproductive access by enshrining these rights in the state constitution.
Women’s rights advocates have been rallying since January 2017, as a result of the 2016 presidential election that solidified Donald Trump as the 45th president despite his history of misogynistic and dangerous rhetoric, demonstrated by a 2005 tape that resurfaced in which he said “I grab women by the p****.”
Throughout Trump’s occupancy in the White House, advocates spent years on the ground protesting, petitioning and fighting to maintain and uphold reproductive and women’s rights. These efforts surpassed the borders of the U.S. as activists joined the movement across the world, in major cities like London and Mexico

City, where crimes against women and femicide are common occurrences.
This year’s theme for the Women’s March is “Bigger Than Roe,” a reminder that there is much more on the line aside from reproductive rights, according to Maya Rodriguez, vice president of the Riverside County chapter of the National Organization for Women (RC NOW).
Stories of Triumph
“It’s never going to be an easy win. We’re going to have to fight. We’ve always been saddled with the fight since the beginning of time,” Rodriguez said.
Hosted by the Riverside Chapter of the National Organization of Women, Dare 2 Empower Foundation, Women’s March Inland Empire and the National Women’s Political Caucus of Pomona/ Inland Empire, residents from across Riverside and San Bernardino Counties gathered in front of city hall.
Student advocates, local elected leaders and community members took the stage to share their stories, some as young as elementary-school age and some as old as pre-Roe. Assemblymember Sabrina Cervantes, who represents Riverside's 58th District, attended the rally, along with her

SB Amazon Worker, continued from page 5
“Amazon has the resources and the power to improve the quality of jobs of the people who make them profitable, but they choose to spend millions on consultants instead of warehouse workers.”
In the final week of December 2022, Amazon abruptly placed Fee on paid suspension and notified her that she was under investigation. Over the holidays, Fee feared for the loss of her job and the ensuing consequences that could be detrimental to her livelihood.
Fee’s coworker, Anna Ortega, 23, described her as someone who can’t be ignored “Sara is someone who's definitely always looking out for people's health and safety. She's very nice… She says hi to you, even if she doesn't know you,” Ortega said, adding that when she and her coworkers found out about Fee’s suspension they “went into go mode.”
Following Fee’s suspension, a large group of her co-workers began an intense campaign that lasted 48 hours. They pledged to escalate activity by striking and wearing stickers in support of her while at work. They also filed an unfair labor practice charge with the National Labor Relations Board for Amazon’s retaliation against Fee, citing coercive statements (threats), coercive actions (surveillance), concerted activities (retaliation and discharge) and interrogation.
“It definitely feels like retaliation in the way that this giant company is going to start to go after these key figures that are speaking out against them to make the job better for everyone,” Ortega said.
Within three days of workers applying pressure on Amazon, the e-commerce giant’s management told Fee to report back to work, but was given a formal warning. Workers said the warning was for fighting against retaliation from the union busters.
The Inland Empire Amazon Workers Coalition said they will not stop advocating for better conditions. Their current demands call for safe working conditions and a five dollar hourly wage increase.
A spokesperson for Amazon, Eileen Hards, reacted to the allegations in the story by saying the charges are without merit. “Our employees
have the choice of whether or not to join a union and we do not retaliate against employees for exercising their rights.”
Hards continued, “Ms. Fee acted in an unprofessional and inappropriate manner
that violated our standards of conduct. She was temporarily suspended with pay, and has returned to work.”

sister Clarissa Cervantes, who is a Riverside city council member and candidate for state assembly.
“I’m going to just be very, very clear about this. There is nothing just, right or fair about abortion bans — period. Can we all agree on that?” Cervantes said to the crowd. “So, when we talk about abortion bans, what we’re actually talking about is limiting and preventing economic justice, education, justice, literally all things justice.”
Throughout the rally, several community members took the stage to share their own stories of triumph, tragedy and trials in relation to reproductive justice, like Christel Reyna, activist and co-founder of the Dare 2 Empower Foundation, an anti-bullying and youth empowerment nonprofit organization.
Reyna shared that she was attacked and raped nearly 30 years ago after she returned to her car in a parking garage in downtown Los Angeles. She said she was embarrassed, confused and scared following her attack. When she finally shared her experience with someone, she was chastised for not calling the police.
Her attack resulted in an unwanted pregnancy.
“I come from a very traditional Hispanic family. In my upbringing, abortion wasn’t something that was considered. We didn’t even talk about it,” Reyna said tearfully. “Thankfully, I was able to find resources to help me. Planned Parenthood is where I went to get my services. So, as I flash forward nearly 30 years, to be standing here and working in the same circles as this organization who was there for me during that time, life came full circle.”
Dr. Angelo Farooq, Chairman of Planned Parenthood Pacific Southwest, attended the event. As a father of a three-and-half year old daughter, Farooq explained that his daughter

ONE SHOT: FDA ADVISORY COMMITTEE ADOPTS NEW COVID-19 VACCINE STRATEGY
In the first meeting of 2023, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee (VRBPAC) unanimously voted to adopt a new COVID-19 vaccine strategy.
The committee voted on the vaccine composition by answering the question: Does the committee recommend harmonizing the vaccine strain composition of primary series and booster doses in the U.S. to a single composition, e.g., the composition for all
In other words, do they recommend transitioning from administering both primary series and booster doses to administering just one type of COVID shot?
All twenty-one temporary and regular committee members voted yes.
Currently, to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, people have to complete the primary vaccine series of two doses, administered several weeks apart. The initial primary doses are composed of the initial COVID-19 strain.
Once the primary series is completed, after two months, individuals are eligible to receive the most recent bivalent booster dose, which is composed of the initial COVID-19 strain and components of the Omicron subvariant.
“Given the evolution of SARS-CoV-2 variants and associated changes in the epidemiology, susceptibility to reinfection, and waning of vaccine-induced immunity, barring development of a significantly improved vaccine, periodic future updates to the S protein sequence(s) contained or encoded in COVID-19 vaccines and revaccination will likely be needed to induce and maintain vaccine effectiveness, respectively," the FDA noted in a briefing document released ahead of the Jan. 26 meeting.
The advisory committee was tasked with considering the viability of the primary COVID-19 vaccine dose as new variants appear and become more resistant to the vaccine. Recently, a new subvariant called XBB.1.5 has surfaced which accounted for nearly 50% of all COVID-19 infections in the week ending on Jan. 21.

Effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccine against variants and severe disease
Expert panelists discussed the effectiveness of the vaccine against circulating variants and severe disease. Dr. John Beigel, associate director for Clinical Research at the National Institutes of Health, stated that current vaccines are good against severe disease, but that protection against transmission is “lacking.”
Dr. Beigel explained that there is a need for next generation COVID vaccines with enhanced ability to block transmission, improved durability and “enhanced breadth of protection” against variants.
The nine-hour long meeting included presentations from U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) experts, FDA officials and vaccine producers Moderna and Pfizer, all of whom provided research and data regarding the state of COVID-19 vaccines and effectiveness of the doses.
In addition to the vote on whether to update the COVID-19 vaccine, the committee also deliberated over proposals for simplifying the process of periodically immunizing people with the vaccine and considered the necessity of an annual COVID-19 booster.
“FDA anticipates conducting an assessment of SARS-CoV-2 strains at least annually and to engage VRBPAC in about early June of each year regarding strain selection for the fall season,” the FDA stated in the briefing document.
The committee did not make a decision regarding how frequent people would need to get the COVID-19 vaccine, but considered ideas to have an annual vaccination schedule similar to the flu shot.
“I think certainly the vaccine strain should be harmonized among the different manufacturers, but this issue of how frequently they should be administered is hard to say with precision, at this particular point,” said temporary voting member Dr. Cody Meissner, professor of pediatrics and medicine at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.
Low booster vaccination rates
Approximately 69% of the U.S. population
has completed the COVID-19 primary series, but just 15% of the total population have received the updated bivalent booster dose. With low booster vaccination rates, the committee was in agreement about the need to update COVID vaccine strategies.
Under the committee’s proposal, a single shot would be available to individuals during the fall. People who have greater risk for illness or who are more vulnerable to COVID, such as
older adults, children and immunocompromised populations, could be offered multiple doses over the course of unspecified time.
Following the vote, the FDA will make an official decision regarding making the proposal to transition to one COVID-19 vaccine shot reality.

Counties. It holds more than 13,000 books and several thousand documents, photographs, and artifacts in the Tauber Holocaust Library and Archives.
For Brandon Brooks, director of California Black Media’s Stop the Hate Project, it is critical for Californians -- and all Americans -- to recognize and uplift the experiences and perspectives of their neighbors from other ethnic groups. Funded by the California State Library, the Stop the Hate project aims to eradicate hate crimes and hate incidents in the state and promote intercultural understanding and cooperation.
Deeply Sympathetic
“For Black Americans, the way we identify with the horror stories of the Holocaust is immediate and deeply sympathetic. It is a recognition based, in part, on our own collective memory of slavery, exclusion and suffering because of who we are – not what we did – as a people,” he says. “The only way we, Americans from all backgrounds, can begin to do something about the division, misunderstanding and normalization of racial and ethnic hatred that we see trying to flourish in our society is to fight it by learning; push back on it by listening. Get to know about each other’s histories, celebrate each other’s traditions, embrace the things that unite us as Americans and take a hard, uncompromising stance against hatred in any form and the violence it triggers.”
Notably, the dedication to honoring IHRD extends incredibly far beyond California, where there are an estimated 1.19 million people of Jewish descent (about 3% of the state’s population), based on U.S. Census numbers compiled by World Population Review.
According to the Holocaust Encyclopedia, 39 countries participated in IHRD commemorating ceremonies in 2015. Many of those countries hosted lectures, showed films, or lit candles while reading names of the victims. Additionally, many participating countries established their own remembrance days that linked to events caused by the Holocaust.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific
and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) -established in 1945 to promote international cooperation through education, science, and culture -- has also fought to counter antisemitism and other forms of group-targeted violence. “The Holocaust profoundly affected countries in which Nazi crimes were perpetrated, with universal implications and consequences in many other parts of the world,” reads the UNESCO site. “As genocide and atrocity crimes keep occurring across several regions, and as we are witnessing a global rise of antisemitism and hate speech, [sharing a collective responsibility] has never been so relevant.”
This California Black Media feature was supported in whole or in part by funding provided by the State of California, administered by the California State Library.

won’t have the same protections that he and his wife had under the protection of Roe.
“She is now going to be growing up in a life where that is not possible. And so we have to organize, and we have to vote and we have to get engaged, to think beyond just our current moment in time and think [about] what we are going to do to pass on that kind of energy for broader generations, not just my daughter, but for all the future generations,” Farooq explained.
Rodriguez said that this year’s Women’s March was by far their smallest turn out, but said, “that just means we’re tired, not done.
