R iverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco loves to exploit right wing issues to garner media attention. So it came as no surprise that he would “open mouth and insert foot” at the first opportunity in relation to the highly controversial and political lightening rod issue of abortion in the wake of the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision to upend 50 years of precedent on this issue. He is so eager for national attention he was even willing to throw another local leader, Riverside City Councilmember Clarissa Cervantes to do so when he brashly claimed on Facebook last week that she supported vandalism at the county courthouse during a Rise Up 4Abortion Rally at the historic site in downtown Riverside last Wednesday. He stated on Facebook, “When you damage, deface, or destroy property you are no longer a protester, you are nothing more than a common criminal. Shame on the Riverside city councilwoman for supporting the defacing of our courthouse. You are lucky we couldn’t A Real Leader Would Apologize…But this is No Real Leader…This is Chad Bianco arrestHoweveryou.”
A missed opportunity to remove Bianco from office Voter turnout was below average across the state in the June primary, including in both Riverside, San Bernardino counties. This most probably enabled sheriffs in both counties–Chad Bianco in Riverside and San Protestestor being handcuffed at abortion rally in downtown Riverside Saturday July 30, 2022. (source: images twitter.com)
according to a spokesperson for the Riverside Police Department Ryan Railsback, a police video shows that Cervantes was not even on the scene of the rally until after Riverside policeLocalarrived.leaders are publicly calling for an apology from Bianco but the media loving borderline political narcissist can’t seem to man up and find his voice. In the true tradition of his dear leader… the former guy…the idea of apologizing must be anathema to him. And to think, this guy was just re-elected to serve another four-year term.

COVID-19 Moderna Booster Shots Could Be Available in the Fall
Omicron BA.5 is currently the leading variant in the U.S., with the CDC reporting more than 85% of cases as BA.5 and 7% as BA.4. Health agencies have categorized both subvariants as more contagious than initial strains.
With the agreement from HHS and the government to purchase bivalent vaccines from Moderna and Pfizer, the U.S. will receive an estimated 171 million vaccine booster doses in the fall, if authorized. The agreements also include options for a total of 600 million doses — 300 million from each company — but only with additional funding from Congress, according to HHS.
In addition to the 66 million Moderna doses, the U.S. government purchased 105 million bivalent COVID-19 booster doses from Pfizer for use this fall, if authorized by the FDA and recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Pending approval

from federal health agencies, HHS would receive the first doses of Moderna and Pfizer vaccine boosters in the fall.
In June, an expert committee recommended that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) update COVID-19 bivalent vaccines that will target both BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron subvariants, which account for nearly all cases.
T he U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) agreed to purchase 66 million doses of Moderna’s updated COVID-19 vaccine booster to use in the fall, pending approval of the new formula.
“We must stay vigilant in our fight against COVID-19 and continue to expand Americans’ access to the best vaccines and treatments,” said HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra in a statement. “As we look to the fall and winter, we’re doing just that — ensuring Americans have the tools they need to stay safe and help keep our nation moving forward.”
As of now, individuals who are 12 years and older who are immunocompromised and people 50 years of age and older are eligible for a second booster shot. Available booster shots were manufactured to target initial strains of the coronavirus.

Special Contributor to BVN continued on I t may take a decade to address critical issues facing Southern California’s Black workers if the state does not intervene to solve the heightened unemployment, underemployment and unsafe conditions that exist in a workforce plagued by a long history of systemic racism, a new study has revealed. The findings of the study, Essential Stories Report conducted by the UCLA’s Center for the Advancement of Racial Equity (CARE) at Work, documents the challenges faced by nearly 2,000 Black workers in Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Riverside and San Diego counties during the Black Job Crisis: For Black Workers’ Wellness at the Workplace as Necessary as Getting a Job
COVID-19 pandemic. The harsh realities facing Black workers were revealed to more than 60 grantmaking representatives during a funder briefing event hosted by the Southern California Black Worker Hub for Regional Organizing held in June. Déjà Thomas, the program manager of CARE, told the funders heard there is an urgent need to support workers to ensure an equitable COVID-19 recovery that supports Black workers to secure quality jobs and resources.
Andrea Dudley, a single mother of three children – including a son with special needs – told a panel discussing the report’s findings that the Inland Empire Black Worker Center and their water works program was a Godsend for her during the pandemic. “Support and resources during the pandemic were in such despair, it sent me into a state where I felt I had no one. I couldn’t work part-time because I had to make sure I was there taking care of him,” she said.Brian McNeil, another worker, told the panel that Black worker protections must be supported. “We need funding and support

(source: twitter.com).
The County of Riverside is experiencing an uptick in probable/confirmed cases as the county reported a total of 42 cases, with a majority of cases occurring in the eastern side of the county, including the Coachella Valley, as of August 4. Dr. Jennifer Chevinsky, Deputy Public Health Officer at Riverside University Health System - Public Health, explained that the county has received roughly 3,000 doses of the monkeypox vaccine, with 75% of the supply issued to partner health clinics such as Borrego Health, Eisenhower Health and most recently, Kaiser Permanente. The remaining 25% of doses is being utilized by the public health department for people who have been exposed to monkeypox through a confirmed case. The county has a limited supply of doses and has been focusing on getting those in need at least one dose of the two-dose vaccine series, similar to the COVID-19 vaccine, as recommended by CDPH. The JYNNEOS vaccine doses are administered 28 days apart, with the second dose able to be given up to seven days after the minimum interval of 28 days.

According to the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), more than 25,000 vaccine doses have been distributed to local public health departments and mobile clinics, with plans to allocate additional doses over the next few weeks. Doses are allocated to local health departments based on different factors such as the number of reported monkeypox cases in an area and estimate of atriskInpopulations.lateJuly, the federal government announced that an additional 72,000 JYNNEOS vaccine doses, the only licensed theauthorizedmanufacturertoproducemonkeypoxvaccine in the U.S., have been alloted to California, with an additional 48,000 doses for Los Angeles County. The CDPH reported 1,310 probable and confirmed monkeypox cases, with the majority of cases occurring in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Approximately 73% of cases have occurred in people between the ages of 25 and 44 years of age and 98% of cases have occurred in males. Monkeypox probable/confirmed cases rise in inland region On July 22, the San Bernardino County Department of Public Health confirmed a positive case of monkeypox, the first in the county. The case occurred in a male resident in Fontana who recently traveled out of state, according to the department. According to the county’s Public Information Officer David Wert, the county has reported three cases and is currently restricting vaccine doses to those “most at risk, which is primarily people who have been exposed and healthcare workers who work with those who are infected or have been exposed.”
“And so what we’re doing is we’re prioritizing getting people at least one dose and in some instances, if somebody’s had much more elevated risk like if they have an immunocompromised condition, then we might also be able to give them the second dose,” Dr. Chevinsky stated. Who is eligible for the monkeypox vaccine The county has outlined who is eligible for monkeypox vaccines across a few categories: People who have been identified as coming into contact with a known case of“So,monkeypox.somebody that has had close contact or intimate contact with a monkeypox case — that is also called postexposure prophylaxis,” Dr. Chevinsky explained. Laboratory workers who directly process monkeypox laboratory specimens or healthcare professionals who work in sexually transmitted infection (STI) clinic environments and who are directly and routinely performing monkeypox testing.“So, that one would be considered a preexposure prophylaxis. These are people that we know are getting in contact with the specimens,” Dr. Chevinsky said. “And it’s to provide protection for them to not get monkeypox.”

A true leader would have already issued a formal apology. Showing once again that Bianco is far from being a true leader and even further removed from the kind of individual who should be at the helm of the Sheriff’s Department of Riverside County, overseeing the fourth largest county in the State of California. In addition, his list of questionable and inappropriate political posturing was written about ad nauseum in the lead up to the June Primary.Whether he was hiring his daughter, promoting and giving salary increases to his brother, wearing his uniform to give speeches at Republican political events in violation of both state and federal law, refusing to upload statewide COVID-19 restrictions, espousing mis/disinformation regarding COVID-19 and its vaccines, or belonging to a right-wing extremist group that is currently facing charges for sedition against the U.S. government and clearly stating he has no regrets for his association with the group–the red flags were waving that he was not fit to hold the office of a non partisan sheriff–and yet, he was reelected.Inretrospect it appears the clarion calls about his disqualifying behaviors may have served to solidify his bonafides among his funders and supporters who showed up and voted for him in June. Bianco has clearly shown Riverside residents who he is and the way he operates so it did not come as a surprise that this camera seeking, darling of the right wing media would exploit the abortion issue in the manner he did. Now that he was proven wrong in his allegations against Cervantes, based on his past behavior, I would be surprised if he apologizes.
