“If I love you, I have to make you conscious of the things you don’t see.”
I
recently watched a compelling conversation with Dr. Mustafa Santiago Ali who serves as the Vice President of Environmental Justice, Climate, and Community Revitalization for the National Wildlife Federation. During the discussion he reminded listeners of the opening quote I used to anchor this week’s commentary. The timing could not have been more appropriate due to the recent release of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report—considered the first major scientific review of climate change since 2013. The report "is a code red for humanity," declared UN Secretary General António Guterres in response to the IPCC findings which, though not surprising, are sobering. Key points highlighted in the report include an official recognition that the past five years were the hottest on record since 1850; the rate of rise in sea levels have nearly tripled compared with the period 1901 to 1971; acknowledgement, by 90 percent, human influence is likely—very likely—the main driver of diminishing glaciers since the 1990s as well as the decrease in Arctic sea-ice; and heat extremes, including
– James Baldwin heatwaves, are more frequent and intense while cold extremes have been less frequent and less severe since the 1950s. The report’s unwelcomed revelation as summarized by the BBC is, “The warming we've experienced to date has made changes to many of our planetary support systems that are irreversible on timescales of centuries to millennia.” Regarding the changing climate, in addition to his role with the National Wildlife Federation, Dr. Ali is also founder of Revitalization Strategies, which is focused on moving vulnerable communities from “surviving to thriving.” During a discussion on Climate One’s Real Talk: Racism and Climate just over a year ago, he highlighted several salient points which included how the Environmental Protection Agency has often fallen short relative to addressing environmental needs of minority communities. He stated, “Anytime policy is being created it should be coming from local people, local communities, local organizations,” continued on page 12

CSUSB: Essential Conversations with African American Men
Francisca Beer, Ph.D | Associate Dean, The JHBC Office Academic Equity, CSUSB

uring the Spring semester of the academic year 2020-2021, the Jack H. Brown College of Business and Public Administration Office of Academic Equity (JHBC OAE), Cal State University San Bernardino held its very first Essential Conversations event. While this was the initial launch, it served as the third “Essential Conversations: African American Men” held by the office. Approximately 30 people participated in the event. The group consisted of businessmen, educators, administrators, students, and staff from across the Inland Empire. The event began with a short presentation on the racial inequalities Black men face in the workforce and everyday life and how people of color have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19 in various communities across California, especially in places with higher levels of poverty. Professor Kathryn Ervin, Theater Arts, co-hosted the event and it would not have been possible nor as successful as it was without her participation, help, and support.
4 VOICE | AUGUST 19, 2021 | theievoice.com
Unfortunately, the event was too short to hear all the participants who had expressed a desire to share their experience. Following is a summary of the central elements for which there appears to be consensus between all participants. Fear of Speaking Their Mind Participants mentioned the fear of speaking their mind, the need to go the extra mile to succeed, disrespect from colleagues, lack of mentorship and bias of the recruitment committee members. During the conversation, Dr. Marc Fudge, Professor, Public Administration, indicated that many faculty members have a fear of speaking their minds when they are not tenured because they are worried anything they say would impact their promotion. Dr. Fudge also shared that he had always been told he would need to work harder to succeed simply because of the color of his skin. continued on page 17

Newsom Visits San Bernardino to Addresses Financial/ Safety Concerns Important to Schools Reopening Aldon Thomas Stiles | California Black Media
O
n Aug. 3 in Perris, CA, Lincoln Cooper and Fortunate Hove Cooper handed out free backpacks full of school supplies and hand sanitizers to struggling families during a tripledigit heat wave. They were joined by a handful of volunteers that included representatives from the Moreno Valley School District. "This is the biggest back to school event we've ever had," said Lincoln Cooper, president and founder of the community outreach organization the Concerned Family (TCF). "We've had a lot of support and we're really thankful and grateful that we were able to help the community." The faith-based, Black-lead community outreach organization, founded in 1993 and run out of an old fire station in Perris, has organized back-to-school events in the past; but none quite on this scale, the group’s leaders say. According to Lincoln, they received over 750 backpacks filled to the brim with useful supplies. "What we had planned, initially, was not the backpacks. The plan was to remember those who lost their relatives in the COVID-19 pandemic and have a memorial for them and then assure the kids that they're still being heard, and we are not just passing them by while they are grieving," said TCF Co-Founder Fortunate Hove Cooper. The Coopers are not alone in their concern for struggling Black families with children returning to school this fall as uncertainty about the coronavirus and its new variants lingers. For many Black California families, especially lowerincome ones, having their children resume inperson classes amidst an ongoing pandemic remains both a financial and public health challenge. But during a visit to Juanita B. Jones Elementary School in San Bernardino on Aug. 6, Gov. Gavin Newsom laid out a roadmap for the state's safe return to in-person instruction. During the press conference, Newsom spoke about the California Comeback Plan, a COVID-19 recovery budget that includes $123.9 billion in investments in education. He was joined by Assembly Majority Leader Eloise Gomez Reyes (D-San Bernardino), Assemblymember
James Ramos (D-Highland), Superintendent of Education Tony Thurmond, Gwendolyn DowdyRodgers, a San Bernardino County education advocate and school board member, among others. "Our school year started Monday and we've had a great week," Dr. Gwen Dowdy-Rogers, the San Bernardino City Unified School District school board president, said at the beginning of the press conference. "Families sent 95 percent of all students back to our campuses for the first time in over a year for in-person instruction," she continued. Newsom addressed some of the pandemic related financial issues students and families like those at the Concerned Family back to school event face. "By the way, $650 million went into this unprecedented first of the nation effort to provide free nutritious meals for our kids," Newsom said. "Supervisor Baca would be upset with me if I didn't remind everybody about all the support that we're providing these kids," he continued. The governor also reassured that this "full reopening of schools" during a pandemic will be safe. However, Lincoln and Fortunate are still concerned about COVID-19 safety for Pre-K and K-12 students. "There's so much going on with the pandemic and even young kids are dying. Initially it was older people." Lincoln said. "So, I'd advise them to make sure they're wearing their face masks and be cautious," he continued. Newsom claimed that many of the problems surrounding pandemic safety in schools could be solved by following safety protocols and getting vaccinated. He also addressed the inequities in education and healthcare in the state and what he plans to do to tackle that issue. "We continue to disproportionately focus on partnerships with communitybased organizations in the African American community and in the Latino community to do more, to get more people vaccinated and address the concerns and anxieties that persist in terms of vaccine hesitancy," Newsom said. "And that's profoundly important, the health of our diverse

communities. And I want folks to know that we have doubled down 480 community based organizations working with barber shops, faith-based communities, the Black press, ethnic media, crossing the spectrum to provide additional outreach," he continued. Newsom says the California Comeback Plan is a comprehensive one that takes healthcare into consideration. "A big part of our community school strategy is to integrate and to reimagine a whole person care framework as it relates to not only quality public education but to address the health needs as well as the nutrition needs of our public kids." California Black Media’s coverage of COVID-19 is supported by the California Health Care Foundation.

California Women Go to “WAR” in Support of Governor Newsom Antonio Ray Harvey | California Black Media
A
broad coalition of California women are banding together to support Gov. Gavin Newsom as he fights to fend off a recall effort that could mar his legacy and throw him out of office in a little over a month. Members of the group, dubbing itself Women Against the Recall (WAR), say they are not going to allow Gov. Gavin Newsom to be overthrown in the special election scheduled for Sept. 14. California U.S. Congresswomen Karen Bass (DCA-13) and Barbara Lee (D-CA-37), who are both supporting WAR, joined a press conference Aug. 9 to make the case for Newsom. Aimee Allison, founder of She The People, an Oakland-based political advocacy group, hosted the briefing. “We are all against the Republican-led recall because we know that the health of our children, neighbors, and communities depend on Gov. Newsom’s continued leadership,” Lee said at the onset of the virtual event hosted by WAR. “Congresswoman Bass and I decided that any successful, political event must have women on the front lines, especially women of color.” The women of WAR come from diverse backgrounds and bring their support for Newsom from different regions of the state. But, organizers say, they remain united by a common goal: to mobilize a statewide grassroots movement that defeats the recall effort. More than 1,000 women, representing themselves or different organizations across the state, signed a letter composed by WAR opposing the recall. Over the next few weeks, WAR’s leaders say, their group will focus on providing voter education and conducting getout-the-vote campaigns. Newsom, who participated in the WAR event, said that he was “humbled” by the support from the 70 different groups that signed on to the letter. He told attendees that “our values and the things we hold dear” are at stake in the recall election. “The one thing that sticks out in particular as a list of grievances who inspired this was our support (Democratic party) for diverse communities,” Newsom said. “Our support for

immigrants, our support for doing more and being better. It’s about each and every one of us.” WAR volunteers say, in their upcoming messaging campaigns, they will explain to Californians what recall election is, and why, in their opinion, why there is a movement to recall Gov. Newsom two years after he was elected to the highest office in the state. Many Democrats are blaming Republicans for the attempt to recall Newsom, citing the state’s progressive politics and trailblazing steps it has taken to foster inclusion and address longstanding inequalities suffered by ethnic and racial minorities. Republican candidates vying to unseat Newsom include former Olympian Caitlyn Jenner, former San Diego Mayor Kevin
Faulconer, conservative talk radio host Larry Elder, Assemblymember Kevin Kiley (R-Rocklin), former United States Congressman Doug Ose, and the 2018 GOP gubernatorial nominee John Cox. “Lacking any crimes or accusations of impropriety, (the members of the Republican party) are trying to punish the Governor for following the advice of scientists to promote mask-wearing and social distancing,” WAR said in a written statement. WAR continued, “(But) let’s be honest, though, this recall campaign is not about the Governor’s handling of COVID. It’s about an anti-democratic, political attack launched by the Republican Party who is exploiting the fear and pain of the COVID pandemic to claw back power continued on page 13

Black Women Bear the Higher Burden of Pay Inequity Breanna Reeves | Contributor

he month of August commemorates Black businesses and entrepreneurs, but this month also highlights the wage gap that Black women experience. Black Women’s Equal Pay Day was recognized on August 3 as the “approximate day a Black woman must work into the new year to make what a White non-Hispanic man made at the end of the previous year,” according to Equal Pay Today. Although Black women-owned businesses increased by 50 percent from 2014 to 2019, the American Community Survey or (ACS) Census data reports that the 2021 wage gap for Black women is $0.63 compared to every dollar earned by non-Hispanic White men. According to the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC), “This disparity has only closed by three cents over the last thirty years, which means, at this rate, Black women are not projected to reach equal pay until the year continued on page 14

The Multifaceted Nature of Domestic Abuse
Phyllis Kimber Wilcox | Contributor
B
etween 2019 and 2020 nearly 30,000 domestic violence related calls streamed into 911 operators from residents in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) has been described as sexual, physical, or psychological abuse perpetrated against one partner by another involved in an intimate relationship. These abusive behaviors may include stalking, threatening, hitting, destroying someone else's personal property, or threatening to do harm to others. The words domestic abuse or domestic violence often bring to mind what most would think of as traditional instances of abuse or intimate partner violence (IPV). In these cases, the kinds most individuals are familiar with, men are the sole perpetrators of violence against their partners or family members. These tragedies, while horrific, look like what most dread and expect including—terribly bruised, battered, physically damaged (and in the most severe cases), murdered women and/or children. These horrible outcomes are far too often the experience of people around the world with survivors left to make sense of their experiences while attempting to rebuild their lives. What Traditional DV Looks Like Traditional domestic violence cases look like Shannon's story. Stabbed multiple times by a man who said he would, "always love her.” Shannon survived by packing her stab wounds with sugar and waiting for a time when she felt safe to flee. Although she was offered help, she thought, “[They could] work it out.” Shannon's background was full of abuse and violence, she had not known anything else her entire life and she feels lucky she lived to tell her story--the price she paid is the scars. She wears the scars of that abuse on her body and in her psyche to this day. It also looks like Angela's story. Angela told her story to Amnesty International. Angela thought she was involved with, "[A] good person." He was someone she had known for twenty years; however after the death of his mother, her partner’s behavior changed. He bought a shotgun and a machete and became more combative. After a while, the physical abuse began. Although they broke up, Angela believed it would get better. “[They] were working it out…" That was until the moment he shot her after a disagreement while she sat in the bathtub. The shot left her paralyzed.
(showcased.freeservers.com)
Angela survived and now speaks publicly about the issues that changed her life so dramatically including domestic violence and mental health. While experiences like Angela's may be the most common, new research is beginning to paint a more complex picture of this serious issue. A Survivor’s Story Longtime Inland Empire resident Deborah, (pseudonym) recently opened up to Black Voice News not only about how domestic violence changed her life but also about how, through her healing process, she was able to help change the way victims of domestic violence are treated in the most tragic of circumstances. Deborah began by explaining how many women are initially surprised by their partners' abusive behaviors. "It's pretty typical and I only say this from my own kind of research and going through my experience--it's not at all atypical." Deborah went on to explain how initially an abuser can appear to be charming, to be a nice person, to have their act together. “They seem very interested in you, what you are doing, and how you're doing it. You know, very supportive---so you enter into the relationship. What you think is a very open
relationship. There don't appear to be any hidden agendas or not any you can foresee immediately. And then, things start to turn." Deborah spoke about how initially the warning signs are subtle. In other words, you might recognize them and not acknowledge them. "By that time you're emotionally invested. You don't want to see what your eyes are telling you, you're in some form of mild denial.” According to Deborah, “When things become more obvious there are three options." She describes that process as thinking you can fix or cure it, or go into fight or flight or freeze mode. If you fight she explained, "You find yourself defeated physically, if you freeze you try to appease your abuser until they inevitably abuse you again, or you flee and ‘get the hell out of there.’" Though she acknowledged this can often put you in greater danger. “[This] is why a lot of women don't leave." She calls this the cycle of abuse. Deborah tried to fix her relationship, then drifted into appeasement. Finally, when she decided to leave she had to prepare to leave quietly. Deborah was lucky. She had money, a supportive family, and some place to go. These are things a lot of women do not have. continued on page 14

Celebrating San Bernardino Area BlackOwned Business, “Smacked Burger Shack” Phyllis Kimber Wilcox | Staff

mericans eat a lot of hamburgers and believe it or not, California is the burger capital of the country, home to more burger joints than any other state. One small business in the City of San Bernardino, the Smacked Burger Shack, is competing for a share of the state’s hamburger market. Hamburgers, the nation’s most popular sandwich, have also come to represent patriotism, almost on par with hot dogs and apple pie. Some readers may be surprised to learn hamburgers were referred to as “Liberty Sandwiches,” during World War I. In addition to their popularity at restaurants and fast food establishments, these popular sandwiches are also a staple at many summer cookouts. Americans Enjoy Their Hamburgers Although the burger industry faces the same challenges as most other fast food offerings as the nation wrestles with issues of obesity. It also faces unique issues related to the environmental impact of beef production due to greenhouse gas emissions. Despite these concerns, a recent survey showed 51 percent of respondents still acknowledged they enjoy eating hamburgers more often than any other restaurant food. Certainly, today’s hamburger industry remains dominated by franchises like McDonalds and Burger King, among others, however, many hamburger connoisseurs still crave the authentic taste of burgers made by hand as offered by small, independently owned burger joints. Proving among the great number of people that eat at restaurants, there remains a niche for independent burger joints. According to BusinessInsider, Americans eat out 5.9 times a week on average and when you consider this in conjunction with the nation’s love of hamburgers it may help explain why the burger industry earned a mind boggling $200 billion in 2015 and was expected to have an annual growth of 2.5 percent a year for the next
several years—another indication there is room in the burger industry for independently owned and operated burger joints. Experts say the burger industry has longevity in part because the hamburger is portable, affordable and can be customized.
as he described what inspires his commitment to his business and the customers he serves. Originally from Los Angeles (LA) where legendary burger joints and burger stands are everywhere, Toney wanted to bring the same delicious burger options to the Inland Empire.
Competition in the Burger Industry While burger giants like McDonald's and Burger King continue battling it out over which will be the largest franchise in the world, ‘Mom and Pop’ burger joints continue to make their mark and hold a share of the burger market. They usually do this by offering larger portions or having specialty items on the menu. The Smacked Burger Shack in San Bernardino is Black-owned and operated. Striving to bring fresh ingredients and delicious food to residents of the city, “is what it's all about,” explained owner, Anthony Toney,
Bringing the LA. Burger Syle to the IE Inspired by those iconic LA eateries he decided to open a place of his own. He did so during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in December 2020. While similar establishments struggled to make it or closed last year, Toney took a prudent risk and opened the Smacked Burger Shack. It appears the bet Toney made on himself and his culinary skills are paying off. Toney recently told the Black Voice News he is happy with the restaurant’s growth and affirmed that today, the business is exactly where he wants it

S T O R Y to be. Toney was not alone in betting on himself and his family in 2020. An annual study by the Kauffman Foundation and as reported by the LA Times, found more new Black-owned businesses opened their doors in 2020 proportionate to the total population than at any other time in the last 25 years, out-pacing new businesses started by Whites or Asian Americans. “Smacked Burger Shack is a family-owned business [and] on any given day you can find family members helping out,” Toney offered. Both his mother and his wife take turns being at the restaurant to lend a hand. Family-owned restaurants across the country, regardless of what they serve, restaurant travel guide Eater notes, usually have one thing in common when they open their doors and invite customers in, “to uphold their family's legacy through food, drink, and hospitality.” And, when it comes to eating out, Americans focus on taste, price, and quality, in that order. Inland Area Customers Weigh-In Heather W. of San Bernardino, posted on Facebook about her experience at Toney’s restaurant and seemed to bear witness to Smacked Burger Shack’s delivery on those expectations. Commenting about the food and service she wrote, “Delicious. . . Great service. Very friendly. But most of all, delicious burgers. Oh, and the Kool-Aid was pretty great.” Guillermo M., of Rancho Cucamonga, seemed to agree. “[I] was looking for a good burger spot in the area, the Smacked Burger Shack popped up with good reviews. Stopped in kinda early like 11:30-ish, so no wait or line. Ordered the Smacked Classic Cheeseburger, added chili, and the meal [came with] fries and a drink . . . Burger was good, real good, like a good ole fat home-made burger, nice and tasty. Some good-seasoned fries as well. This place definitely [has] a good thing going, will definitely be back.” Menu Options On the menu are various burgers from the Baby Smacked Burger to the Smacked Classic Cheeseburger to the Smacked Daddy Classic Burger, “all are made to order,” Toney boasted. If you're not into beef, look no further. Smacked
Burger offers turkey burgers, chicken, and hotlink sandwiches. When asked about their best-selling item Toney replied, "I get asked this quite often, and as it turns out, the customers love Smack Burger's build your own fries’ option.” He went on to explain the toppings for the build your own fries include, “Steak, chicken, shrimp, crab or a combination of chicken and shrimp, crab and shrimp, steak and shrimp. You also have a choice of dipping sauces.” Although 86 percent of all burger joints are chains, among those that are independently owned and operated in the Inland Empire,

stressing how communities should be allowed to speak for themselves. He added that if politicians at all levels of government would just understand this, “We would stop wasting money and we would stop making mistakes by creating policy that is not meeting the needs of everyday people.” While remarking on a perceived gulf between environmentalists and the racial justice movement, he stressed there is a way to find common ground. This includes highlighting that, “The same pollution that is killing Black and Brown folks in the city is the same pollution that is impacting the national parks that you say that you care about so much,” he noted adding, “So, you should be standing in solidarity.” The environmental impacts from air pollution, including the severe weather and the economic upheaval from it, impacts Black and minority communities, “not only first, but worst.” If the world has declared the climate crisis “Code Red,” then for Blacks and other vulnerable groups, the emergency is at a higher level, because historically when things are bad for most Whites, they are near catastrophic for people of color. There are many things that result in these communities due to their being more vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and most are the result of institutional and structural racism beginning with “heat islands” which produce higher daytime temperatures and reduced nighttime cooling caused in part by paved and “impermeable” surfaces like roads, and parking lots coupled with a lack of trees and vegetation along with other contributing factors. There is also the reality that many Black and other minority communities are located near power plants, petrochemical plants, industrial factories, and various other sources of pollution including neighborhoods and schools located near highways and other highly traversed roadways. A recent study revealed Blacks breathe in 56 percent more particulate matter than they produce from their consumption. Despite some who claim the Black community is disengaged on the issue of climate change, research shows just the opposite. Blacks and Hispanics are actually more engaged than other groups on this issue according to a study by the continued on page 18

2130.” A report by the Women’s Institute for Policy Research revealed in 41 out of 42 states, “Black women’s median annual earnings were less than 70 percent of White men’s earnings.” The data showed that in California Black women’s annual median earnings were $46,941 compared to White men’s annual median earnings of $79,902, resulting in a $32,961 gap. The pandemic overwhelmingly exposed the economic disparities among Black women who primarily worked on the frontlines. “More than one in three Black women (36.8 percent) – the largest share of any group by race/ ethnicity and gender – worked in a front-line job before the pandemic started, compared to just 12.6 percent of white, non-Hispanic men,” the NWLC report noted. Thirty-seven cents may not seem like much of a loss to a dollar, but over time, the loss of thirty-seven cents amounts to $24,110 each year, which Black women will continue to lose if the wage gap is not closed. Closing the Wage Gap Over the last few years, California has amended the California Equal Pay Act to establish equal pay for employees who perform “substantially similar work.” The law prohibits wage differences based on sex or race/ethnicity and asserts that an employer cannot prohibit workers from discussing their wages or the wages of others. While California has amended the Equal Pay Act, the law can still permit unequal pay due to a seniority system, a merit system, a system that measures earnings based on quantity or quality of production or a “bona fide factor other than sex, race, or ethnicity.” In order to improve the wage gap, one that disproportionately impacts women across all occupations, the American Bar Association recommends strengthening the current federal Equal Pay Act and enacting the Paycheck Fairness Act. “The Paycheck Fairness Act would make critical changes to the law, including: prohibiting retaliation against workers who inquire about their employers’ wage practices or disclose their

During a news conference last week, California Secretary of State Shirley Weber said the ballot will ask two questions: Do the voters want to recall Newsom, and if so, who do they want to replace the governor. IN THE NEWS The Multifaceted Nature, continued from page 9
Deborah was able to extricate herself from her dangerous situation with the help of the courts, the police, a support group and her family. Part of her healing process was to go into the prisons and speak with women who were jailed for killing or assaulting their abusers. At the time, in the late 1980's early 1990's, the courts did not allow domestic violence as a mitigating factor when considering sentencing in cases where a victim kills or physically harms their abuser. Deborah was a part of helping to change the law. She's modest about her role. “I just jumped on the bandwagon. When I was going through my experience I was very, very fortunate and ended up in a support group with a woman who was very proactive in the area, actually doing counseling and providing legal services to women who were incarcerated. Through her, I was able to dovetail into what they were doing." Through the work of these women and others, the laws were changed. It is easier to get restraining orders now and domestic violence can be considered in the instances where a victim harms or kills their abuser. Sometimes, It is Not Just a One-Way Street It is often thought domestic abuse and violence is a one-way street, now studies are providing clues this is not always the case. New research indicates some people involved in domestic abuse and/or intimate partner violence (IPV) can be both victims, as well as perpetrators of abuse. U.S. Men: Lifetime Prevalence of Contact Sexual Violence, Physical Violence and/or Stalking Vicitimization by an Intimate Partner The CDC's National Violence Against Women survey found that 835,000 men are the victims of domestic violence every year. Men who experience IPV tend to under report their abuse. This is partly because they also have special concerns when it comes to contacting authorities. Men especially fear they will be identified as the perpetrator of abuse or fear being punished for defending themselves against an intimate partner who initiates the violence. Readers may be surprised to learn the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) reports, “In relationships with abuse, a majority of the abuse was reported as mutual, referred to as bidirectional relationship abuse.” The agency further advises, “The rates were also relatively high.” These findings, NIJ advises, highlights the need to better understand both relationship context and culture aspects undergirding bidirectional IPV in addition to exploring aspects related to prevention
and intervention for both men and women. According to data tracked by Social Solutions, a nonprofit consortium of social workers who use technology to drive social change more than 28 percent of men in the U.S. report having experienced rape, physical violence and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime. In addition, fully 15 percent of domestic violence victims in California are male. Something to keep in mind in this regard is that male victims of IPV often do not report such incidents because of the “perceived” advantage women have when it comes to using the system to punish or manipulate them. Domestic Violence is not Just IPV Domestic abuse is not just violence perpetrated between people who are sexually intimate but may occur between family members such as grown children against elder members of a family, or a dependent adult. This violence is described as elder and dependent adult abuse. In cases of domestic abuse involving elders or dependent adults, warning signs according to the National Institute on Aging (2020), may include no longer participating in activities they once enjoyed, looking unkempt and dirty, appearing tired or complaining about lack of sleep, and/or withdrawing into themselves. Additional signs of concern may be physical such as unexplained sores, marks, bruises, or cuts. Other signs could include not having access to needed medical equipment such as walkers, canes, glasses etc. Consider the 2018 case of a sixty-five-year-old woman in the inland region of Southern California when Rancho Cucamonga police answered a call for a welfare check. When officers arrived at the residence, they found the woman strapped to a chair with a limited ability to speak. They learned she had not been moved in five days. Her caretaker, Brandon Carl, did not see to her needs. The house was dirty and described as "not suitable,” by police. The woman could not stand on her own. She was taken to the hospital, while her caretaker and his friend, Sebastian Trujillo, who also lived in the home, were arrested. The tendency to look at domestic abuse as an issue of gender as well as one where there are only singular victims, as well as a singular perpetrator, keeps the focus off providing the kinds of interventions which may be most effective in combating the issues at the heart of domestic abuse. What are the Warning Signs? There are warning signs of domestic abuse and usually more than one sign of abusive behavior
14 VOICE | AUGUST 19, 2021 | theievoice.com
may present themselves at the same time. In the case of IPV, these signs may not be present at the very beginning of the relationship and may become apparent over time. This can include hypercritical behavior such as telling a partner or making them feel everything they do is inadequate and/or controlling behaviors such as keeping a partner away from others, especially important people in their lives like family members, friends, or peers. Controlling behaviors are also common especially around financial issues and controlling physical movement. Jealousy behaviors can also be an indicator of domestic abuse as is pressuring or intimidating a partner into behaviors which normally they would not agree to such as sexual behaviors. The use of drugs or alcohol can also be signs of IPV. Domestic violence is not just one form of violence, it is not limited by age or gender or sexual orientation or length of relationship. It is the violence perpetrated against those who are closest to the perpetrator. It is violence that can happen to anyone—men and women, children and youth, middle-aged and the elderly. It happens in long-term relationships or in date rape cases. To stop domestic violence, we have to recognize it when we see it, and do what we can to provide safety, resources and information for those who need it. Working to End Domestic Violence The California Partnership to End Domestic violence is a coalition of more than a thousand advocates, organizations and groups across the state. For nearly 49 years the organization has worked in the areas of public policy, communications and capacity-building on cosmetic violence prevention and intervention strategies to advance social change. According to its website, the partnership believes by sharing expertise, advocates and policy-makers can end domestic violence. Feeling Devalued Meanwhile, an Assistant Professor stated he felt the discrimination directly because a couple of his colleagues told him, “You were hired because they needed a Black man in the department,” which made him feel his abilities and hard work were not recognized. This is congruent with what a lot of African American men experience in their workplace.
and the feeling of isolation experienced by faculty of color. The social isolation minoritygroup faculty members have experienced are large obstacles to retention.
Need for Diverse and Inclusive Faculty and Staff Businessman, Babatunde Olanipekun, remembered the time he applied to California State University, San Bernardino to be a staff member. He stated that he believes there is a need to hire a diverse and inclusive faculty and staff. He also felt that the hiring process could be improved by a more diverse composition of the recruitment committee. A diverse faculty and staff can be beneficial in a myriad of ways including supporting students from diverse backgrounds, creating a sense of comfort for culturally diverse students, and broadening the range of what is taught and how it is taught.

A Dual Perspective Duane Cofield, Lecturer and Marketing, said he can talk from the perspective of both a student and a member of the faculty. From a student’s standpoint, there is a lack of role models. From a professor’s point of view, the absence of other faculty of color deepens feelings of isolation. Cofield also talked about the need for more support to conduct research. Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Tahirah Simpson, Guided Pathways Task Force Faculty Leader, joined our conversation from San Bernardino Valley College. Simpson mentioned how distressed she was when she heard faculty members stating that issues involving DEI will no longer be of concern to them once they are tenured. This mentality really discourages those who are working hard for their futures as well as the future of their students. Racial Inequities, Multiple Platforms
When will things change? We want to remain positive and will monitor progress during the next Essential Conversations.

All in attendance agree that something needs to be done about the racial inequalities across multiple platforms. Andre Harrington, Professor, Theater Arts, shared, “[You’ve] got to feel safe and comfortable” and because many do not feel secure when speaking up about these inequalities in the workspace, “more work is needed!” “I want to inspire and make sure students have the opportunities they deserve,” shared Anthony Roberson, Associate Director of Operations, Santos Manuel Student Union. Interestingly, all the comments made by the participants of this event have been well documented in the literature about DEI since the early 1970s and probably even before. As the literature would suggest, people have been asking for change that has yet to happen. The literature also supports participants’ opinions that they need to prove more than any other group that they are qualified. A meta-analysis examining 20 years of research focusing on faculty of color in academia found that racial minorities describe undervaluation in their research interests and challenges to their credentials and intellect contribute to the dissatisfaction and lower retention rates among faculty of color at universities The literature is also clear about the lack of training of recruitment committee members

Yale Program on Climate Communication. The study also found these same groups are more willing than Whites to join a campaign to convince elected officials to take action to reduce global warming. Minorities know we are the proverbial canaries in the coal mine as it relates to the changing climate, and as a result, we must elevate our action on this issue—cause some “good trouble”. One of the ways to do this is by continuing to fight even harder for a just and equitable recovery from COVID-19 and that fight must include a community-based focus to mitigate the impacts of a changing climate. We can do this by helping to lead the movement for clean energy that includes more clean jobs for those in our communities and less pollution. There are ways, for example, to offset the impact of heat islands. We must also continue fighting for reduced carbon emissions in these communities and the list goes on. There are lots of ways to make our voices heard. They include among others, attending planning commission meetings, board and city council meetings; seeking appointments to local commissions where decisions impacting the local environment are made, running for office if local representatives are unresponsive, educating friends and family members on the issues of the changing climate and its impact on minority communities; and most important—register and vote. The future is in our hands. Of course, this is just my opinion. I’m keeping it real.
