Black Businesses Need Support of the Black Community Year Round

D

uring the month of August, Black Voice News highlighted Black owned businesses in the inland region as a way to recognize Black entrepreneurs for their successes, milestones, and historical progress. Our goal then and now is to encourage support of these businesses not only during the month of August, but every month. Although Black entrepreneurs have a long and challenging history in America which includes systemic racism, redlining and even violence, they continue to persevere. In part, their history of survival is rooted in the ability to coalesce for mutual support. In 1900 Booker T. Washington founded the National Negro Business League establishing an institution that convened members of the Black community who were businessowners, community figures, and educators in order to pursue prosperity, financial growth and economic development among the African American community. Supporting Black businesses today is more important than ever as many continue to recover from the economic losses caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Black businesses in the Inland Empire were hit especially hard by the coronavirus pandemic. They need community support year round. As noted by Pepi Jackson, President of the Riverside County Black Chamber of Commerce, “I believe that National Black Business Month is especially important to celebrate in this time and day, simply because we’re coming out of history’s worst pandemic that has caused the most damage to Black businesses that is, in memorable history, other than slavery itself.” Black Women Making an Impact Despite the setbacks, businesses owned by Black women accounted for 21 percent of all women-owned businesses in the country and their businesses have grown at an annual rate of 12 percent for the past year compared to an

eight percent annual growth rate between 2014 and 2019. Recycling Black Dollars in Support of Black Businesses According to Black Economics 101, “The average Black dollar lasts only hours within the Black community and that lack of reinvestment— i.e., not supporting Black-owned banks and businesses—has in some ways contributed to the wealth gap between Blacks and other ethnicities.” More than 37 million Black people in America spend about $1 trillion in value each year, often going into the hands of corporations and others who work against the best interest of Black people. If money talks, like the old folks say, then one trillion dollars should buy a lot of conversation--let them speak for the economic empowerment of Black people. Supporting Black-owned businesses helps strengthen the economic viability of the Black community. “The key to a healthy, vibrant Black community is [first] entrepreneurship, and then more of those companies must grow. continued on page 18

Networking, Outreach & Social Media: One Black Business Owner’s Formula for Success Breanna Reeves | Staff

ndia McWhorter married her husband in 2009. She planned and put on the wedding by herself. She was only 20 years old. Planning and executing her wedding inspired India to start her own business doing something she loved. She immediately created a plan that would allow her to launch it. “I got a ‘9 to 5’and my goal was, I would start saving up so that I could purchase the inventory that I need. So, long story short, the goal was a three year plan: get what I needed, start buying products and then I would leave,” India explained. “I ended up staying at my job for seven years and the short-term goal went out the window.” India officially left her position in the Human Resources Department at the Los Angeles County Metro Transit Authority in March 2018. “I would say the push for leaving my job was kind of life. Life happened. And, it forced me to reevaluate where I was and was I doing what I wanted to do in life,” India said. “And I decided ‘no.’ I wasn't happy with my decision and I reminded myself that I started the job to start a business.” After talking with her husband and creating a game plan, India got her license, her business name published and filed the proper paperwork to officially register her business. Twelve years later, India Camille Events is a growing event planning business based out of Jurupa Valley, but operating throughout southern California. Utilizing Social Media for Business Growth “I made some connections through Instagram, reached out to another event planner who had been kind of inspiring me to get my feet out there and just try things,” India said. “So, that's credit to Cairo’s Customs. She's an event planner in Los Angeles. A lot of her clients are celebrity clients and she allowed me to shadow her on some events.” India and her husband began their event

planning business with a photo booth that they purchased in 2018. They were hired by the owner of Cairo’s Custom’s, Jocelyn Crawford, to run their photo booth at events. India was able to build a client list, build inventory and learn from her mentor. Although the pandemic forced a lot of businesses to stop operations, business for India really picked up toward the end of 2020. “In the midst of a pandemic, my event planning business really started to get viewed and seen by doing intimate parties for 10,” India said. Initial Center for Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines restricted gatherings to 10 people. “And so I started doing intimate birthday parties for groups of 10. And then people really liked that idea and it just really caught on and it took off this year for me in 2021.” India credits the growth of her business

to social media platforms, Instagram and Facebook, where she promotes and showcases her services and setups. During the pandemic, India got creative and started showcasing her work on Instagram by creating mock setups for events in her backyard. Last October India showcased a mock event called “Trap or Treat” for a Halloween theme and reached out to local vendor, Happiest Ours, a mobile bartending service, to come out. “Social media has been a free platform for advertising. And it's been so helpful for me at this point. My clients come from social media. I don't even know my clients anymore,” India said. “It used to be, of course, people you know, your small circle, the people around you, family members kind of advocating for you to let people know I know somebody. But at this point, I will say the consistency from my social media has continued on page 8

lack people spend millions of dollars each year on their hair and the products they use to keep it looking good. While there are differing numbers, some push estimates of the amount spent on hair care products to over a billion dollars annually. Despite what appears to be a lucrative market, the Black hair care industry is a difficult business to establish and be successful in - especially for Black entrepreneurs. There are several reasons for this. Although there is a growing list of haircare products catering to people with curly hair, and when one considers wearing natural hair is a large and growing part of the Black hair care market, Forbes reports that wigs, weaves, and hair extensions have a stable and established share of the industry. Despite this and other challenges, about 15 years ago, local entrepreneur, Marcus Jinks, saw his future in this market, made a decision to enter it and build a future for himself and his family. In 2006 he opened MK Beauty Supply at 1200 E Highland Avenue, Suite J, in San Bernardino. Over the years, Jinks has experienced first hand the struggles of trying to establish a business in this market as a Black entrepreneur. "In this business, in this community,” Jinks shared how hard it was in the beginning explaining his belief some Blacks were supporting Korean hair care product businesses and passing his business up. “But over a period of time,” he continued, “my daughter developed a relationship with a lot of the Black women in the community.” Jink’s comments about the outsized presence of members of the Korean community in the hair care industry are rooted in a little known history. Some first generation Korean Americans looking to establish business opportunities for themselves and their own families, went into the business of supplying Black communities with hair care products, according to the book “On My Own: Korean Businesses and Race

Relations in America” by In-Jin Yoon. The wig business here in the U. S. and the explosion of the wig business in South Korea in the 1960s is instrumental to understanding the Korean ownership of beauty supply stores. Korean Americans own more than seventy percent of the beauty supply stores nationwide. Jinks credits his daughter’s personality, warmth and ability to connect with people through her kindness with helping the business survive. “She braids hair [and] after twelve years, she built the business. I give her most of the credit,” he stated proudly. Jinks also acknowledges and credits his own hard work and perseverance in growing the business’s helping to grow their customer base-this included passing out flyers periodically to advertise. Online "But, it's tough,” he continued, expressing concerns that as a Black-owned business he does not feel supported by young Blacks in the community. “[Y]oung people don't support you,” he noted without further explanation, before adding, “But, by the grace of God, we're still in business." Research shows there are reasons for this. While Jinks does have a limited online presence, you can find him on Yelp and through his daughter's Facebook and Instagram accounts @mskay'slovelyhair, younger generations including Millennials, Gen Xers, and Zoomers gravitate towards shopping online with vendors who have an energetic online presence. With people staying home more often during the pandemic, brick and mortar stores needed a web savvy presence to compete. This is even

Black in School: Why Do CA Black Students Face Half a Billion Dollar School Funding Gap Amid Resurging Coronavirus?

cannot aptly describe just how complicated running a school has become in the era of COVID-19. New categories of jobs have been created in schools just to contact trace, test, and track the escalation of the virus as it spreads. The county health department gave our school a one-page “decision tree” last year to guide our response when we got a COVID case. Now the document is literally called a “decision forest” and it's three times as long. Quarantining people who become infected has an eerie effect in schools. A person who is at work today, can disappear tomorrow into quarantine leaving the function they once performed to go undone for ten days at a time because there is nobody to replace them. These staffing gaps impact the ability of schools to consistently provide the services we take for granted. The reality is before the pandemic 67 percent of Black kids in the Golden State could not read or write at grade level, while 79 percent were below state standards in mathematics and 86 percent in science. Our fight at Fortune School, to successfully educate children, particularly Black

children is California’s fight. However, there is a problem for Black kids going back to school in California. Our state funds public schools based on student demographics, giving more money to the schools that serve kids lawmakers say need more support. Right now, 80,000 Black kids don’t qualify for extra support because they are not low-income, foster youth or English learners. If they were, the schools that serve them would get $7,000 more per child. That adds up to a $560 million funding gap for California’s Black students. We need a school funding formula that provides more support for all Black students because as a group, our children are in crisis. The California Democratic Party (CDP) Black Caucus is calling attention to these inequities in a special series of hearings called Black in School on the state of Black students in California public schools and powerful ways to improve the Black experience. The CDP Black Caucus is right to call for change. As a public school educator, I encourage parents and guardians of Black children to become partners with their schools. This must happen now more than ever. From understanding achievement and funding gaps, to continued on page 18

ith less than two weeks until the Newsom recall election on September 14, Black leaders across California spoke with Governor Gavin Newsom to discuss the consequences of a Republican candidate winning the governor’s seat in California. Hosted by Representative Barbara Lee, the virtual press conference included several community leaders and Black representatives among them Congresswoman Karen Bass, Reverend Dr. Amos Brown of the San Francisco NAACP, and Mayor of San Francisco, London Breed, in conversation with Gov. Newsom. The focus of the press conference was to emphasize the importance of voting “no” in the recall election and informing constituents of what’s at stake. “The stakes here in California are just as

high because Republicans have made California, mind you - California, their next target. We all know what that means for our communities: threat to all Californians, especially the African American community,” Rep. Lee said. “It's too real and too unrealistic for anyone to sit out this election. And so we’re against this Republican-led recall because we know that the health of children, our neighbors and our communities depend on Governor Newsom’s leadership.”

Policy Institute of California (PPIC). “We can’t get confused by Larry Elder. I don’t care what Larry Elder looks like. We know Larry Elder very well in Los Angeles and he has built his career on attacking Black leaders,” Rep. Bass explained. “We know that Black folks don’t support the recall, but we also know that sometimes our folks have problems getting to the polls. Well, you don’t need to go to the polls.”

Republican Frontrunner Republican candidate Larry Elder has emerged as a frontrunner in the recall election. A new survey notes that among half of likely voters, Elder is the preferred Republican candidate at 26 percent, according to the Public

Although the last day to register to vote was August 30, voters still have the opportunity to vote by registering and then casting a provisional ballot in the recall through Election Day on Sept. 14. “Just a no and done. Get it in the mailbox. Vote no and move on. One question, a simple answer: No,” Newsom said. “But as Barbara said, it’s not just the defeat of Trump that was consequential. We still have to defeat Trumpism which is still alive and well all across this country. You’ve seen that with all of these voter suppression bills that have gone to the floor all across the country.” How Inland Empire voters feel about the Recall Black Voice News surveyed a pool of residents in the Inland Empire on how they feel about the recall election. While the pool was small, residents who participated generally had the same consensus in regards to the recall. Approximately 94 percent of those surveyed answered “no” when asked if they think Gov. Newsom should be removed from office.

When asked a follow up question (“why or why not”), respondents were able to write in their response and express their opinions. “Governor Newsom does not merit this unwarranted recall. To date, he has done nothing egregious enough to be recalled from his fairly elected office. He has had to govern our large state during an unprecedented global Pandemic,” wrote one respondent who lives in Riverside. “Hard times required making difficult decisions. I don't believe his distractors/ opponents could have done a better job than Gavin Newsom during these unpredictable pandemic times.” Another respondent, a resident of Moreno Valley, expressed that the recall election is a “waste of taxpayer dollars led by sour grape Republicans.” Only one respondent answered yes in response to whether Newsom should be recalled, citing that “people won’t work.” The recall election is the second time a sitting governor has the potential to be recalled, the first being the 2003 recall election of Gray Davis who was unseated by Arnold Schwarzenegger. In the Black Voice News survey, roughly 83 percent of respondents answered that they had previously voted in a recall election while approximately 16 percent said they had not. While some voters may be familiar with the recall voting process, California’s leaders are still campaigning to inform voters about the recall ballot. There will be two questions on the ballot. The first question asks if the governor should be recalled. The second question asks: if the governor is recalled, who should replace him and then lists candidates. The list does not include Newsom. Of the 46 certified recall candidates on the ballot, four are residents of the Inland Empire: Chauncey "Slim" Killens (Republican), a retired corrections officer; Jeff Hewitt (Libertarian), Riverside County Supervisor; Robert C. Newman II (Republican) of Redlands, listed as a farmer and psychologist; and Sarah Stephens, a pastor.

U.S. Natural Hair Care Product Market Size, by End Use, 2016 to 2027

Helping Small Businesses Build a Dynamic Online Presence With the changing retail landscape, small businesses are in search of solutions to address the new challenges they face. One such solution is being offered in New York. “NYC Small Biz: Open + Online,” a public private partnership is designed to help small businesses create an online presence to help them compete in today's e-commerce market. Many of the services provided are free with thirty percent of the businesses who have taken advantage of their services being Black owned. Such partnerships could be expanded or attempted here to help boost small business in the Inland Empire. Surviving the Pandemic Reflecting on how the coronavirus pandemic has impacted his business to date, Jinks shared. “We were closed in 2020, from April to May," however, business has picked up. Looking back on the coronavirus challenges of last year, Jinks commented about the failure of government support available to him during those difficult days. At the outset of the pandemic, the PPP or the Paycheck Protection Program was flawed especially when it came to providing relief to minority business owners. Many of the initial loans went only to businesses that had a previous relationship with a bank and were only available to businesses with employees. Over ninety percent of Black businesses are sole proprietors. This was a problem for many minority business owners who had no history with the institutions providing the loans. This problem was alleviated in the second round of funding which made sure that community lending institutions with a track record of providing loans to small businesses, were involved in the process. Although Jinks was able to secure a

government grant for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), he is still seeking additional fiscal support. As he explained, "I wanted to get a SBA (Small Business Administration) loan. Well, I applied for one,” he added before stating. “I'm still waiting to hear back.” Challenges to Expanding the Business Jinks is seeking the SBA loan to enlarge his business into an adjacent space to where he is currently located. His goal is to use the added space to expand his inventory to include wigs and hair extensions. Even if he is able to expand his business, he will still face difficulties in securing inventory directly. The largest market share of beauty supply stores are held by Korean Americans, who built their share of the market decades ago by investing in the storefront model of supplying hair products, and who have established

themselves as institutions. The manufacture and import of wigs and hair products including synthetic hair remains dominated by Asian countries in general, including China and India with Peru becoming an increasing player in the world market (China being the largest). All of these relationships are long standing and Black people have historically not been involved in this side of the business. However, with an increasing interest in natural hair, there are more Black people like Jinks, interested in establishing/expanding businesses selling these products, are having to build networks from scratch.
