“ ’m a real friend,” Trump proclaimed to members of the LGBTQ community during his 2016 bid for the presidency but with friends like him (as the saying goes) who needs enemies. He was sworn in as president at noon on January 20, 2017, an event certain to go down in history for all the wrong reasons. Within minutes of the ceremony however, Trump began to express his true “friendship” to the LGBTQ community by erasing all mentions of the LGBTQ community from the White House website as well as the websites of the Department of State and the Department of Labor—many considered it a warning shot across the bow. This was only the beginning. During his short years in office, which seem to many of us like an eternity, Trump has taken no less than 114 actions which undermine protections for members of the LGBTQ community—although many targeted a large swath of underrepresented communities, many were specifically designed with this goal in mind. Among his many expressions of “friendship,” the president has rescinded Title IX protections for transgender students; excluded the LGBTQ community from The National Survey of Older Americans Act Participants and the Annual Program Performance Report for Centers for Independent Living; cut HIV and AIDS research funding under the National Institutes of Health; cancelled plans to add the LGBTQ community to the 2020 U.S. Census; broke with an eight year tradition and refused to issue a presidential proclamation designating June as LGBTQ Pride Month; removed sexual orientation and gender identity from the Department of Commerce’s Equal Employment Policy; appointed an antitransgender activist, to head the Office of Gender Equality and Women’s Rights at the US Agency for International Development; banned transgender servicemembers from

serving in “any capacity” in the U.S. military; used the official White House webpage to direct readers to an article published by the Heritage Foundation that called being transgender a “psychological disorder;” made several anti-LGBTQ judicial nominations including one who called transgender children part of “Satan’s plan;” filed an amicus brief in support of religious exemptions allowing discrimination against members of the LGBTQ community; had the Department of Health and Human Services erase all mentions of LGBTQ community health needs in its strategic plans through 2022; reversed nondiscrimination protections for transgender people in the workplace under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964; expressed support for businesses owners’ ability to put up signs saying they won’t serve gays. This is just a partial list of actions against the LGBTQ community Trump took his first year in office. Not surprisingly, he began the following year similarly with the establishment in January 2018 of a new department within the Department of Health and Human Services to shield healthcare workers who refuse to treat LGBTQ patients based on moral or religious objections. 114 and counting presidential actions that negatively impact the LGBTQ community according to the nonprofit media monitoring organization GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) and other national media outlets. New Medicare Scam
Washington, D. C. - Federal officials have warned of a new scam targeting Medicare enrollees. Scammers are offering “free” genetic tests and claiming Medicare will cover it. If they can get an individual’s Medicare number, they are using it to commit fraud and identity theft. The scammers are targeting potential victims in several ways including through telemarketing calls, health fairs, and even knocking on doors. Officials reminded everyone that only a doctor you know and trust should order and approve any requests for genetic testing. It is important to understand that if Medicare is billed for a test or screening that was either not medically necessary and/or was not ordered by your doctor, the claim can be denied. When such claims are denied the individual tested could be responsible for the entire cost of the test—which can total thousands of dollars. To protect yourself, do not give your Medicare, Social security or other personal information to anyone offering a free genetic test and if you get a genetic testing kit in the mail, refuse it. If you suspect Medicare fraud, call 1-800-MEDICARE.

Calling it Quits: Rusty Bailey Will Not Seek Reelection
Riverside
R
iverside Mayor Rusty Bailey declared Tuesday, September 3, 2019 he will not seek reelection. “It has been an honor and a privilege to serve my hometown as its 17th Mayor,” said Bailey. “It is also bittersweet to leave a position that was a goal since my youth.” Bailey was first elected to represent the third ward as a member of the Riverside City Council in 2007 and was elected mayor in 2012—he has served two terms. Bailey is credited with the city’s significant economic growth including record low unemployment and commercial/residential vacancy rates; the relocation of the California Air Resources Board headquarters to Riverside; the designation of Riverside’s first Innovation District; and housing expansion at all affordability levels. In addition, many consider his focus on developing the city’s historic downtown, which research shows is a key factor for cities to survive recessions, as unmatched. Considered among Bailey’s greatest accomplishments is the innovative continued on page 17
Fighting Opioid Addiction in the Inland Region Riverside
T
he Riverside University Health System (RUHS) Department of Public Health was recently awarded a three-year $7.1 million federal grant to enhance surveillance of overdose morbidity and mortality in Riverside County. The funding will help local officials improve tracking of opioid-related overdoses and better allocate resources. Officials will use data to guide overdose prevention efforts to target people who have experienced adverse childhood and community experiences (ACEs/ACERs), according to Kim Saruwatari, RUHS Director of Public Health. The data will be used to determine the frequency of ACEs/ACERs on overdose incidences in Riverside County and create more responsive and collaborative prevention efforts to address the causes of substance use disorders and overdose. Like elsewhere in the nation opioid-related deaths have increased in the county. For example, in 2018, there were 142 such deaths in Riverside County, compared to 77 in 2007. Overall, there were 431 drug-related deaths in Riverside County during 2018, compared to 214 in 2007. According to Saruwatari, nearly $2.4 million a year for three years, will fund the creation of a monthly overdose death review team, develop rapid response to overdose outbreaks, while also enhancing analysis/ dissemination of hospital emergency department and 911 ambulance responses. RUHS-Public Health will partner with Riverside EMS Agency, Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office, RUHS-Behavioral Health, and IEHP in this effort.
“The funding will help Public Health gather critical information that will help prevent tragedies and the senseless loss of life caused by opioids,” said Saruwatari. “We already know this epidemic strikes everywhere, but we will now be better able to determine where to target precious resources.”

Staying Active is Good for the Body, Heart and Brain
I
t makes sense: staying active mentally and physically as we age keeps our minds sharper. Now research backs it up. A new study finds a combination of mental and physical activity may help improve brain function in older adults. No matter what activity you do, staying active physically and stimulated mentally keeps your brain working better. Researchers studied 126 inactive older adults with memory problems for 12 weeks. They were split into four groups and assigned four different combinations of mental and physical activities. The mental activities included computer work and training DVDs. The physical activities included classes in aerobics and toning. Regardless of which group people were part of, mental abilities improved over time, across the board. The takeaway from the study is simple — keep your body active to keep your mind sharp. If you don’t use it, you lose it, that’s the bottom line. I always tell my patients whatever saves your heart, saves your brain. Physical exercise doesn’t just help our well-being and make us feel better emotionally. We now know it helps us cognitively.” Like everyone, older adults have a wide range of mental activities to choose from. A few ways to stay mentally engaged and your mind working: • Keep in contact with friends and family connections • Learn new skills like painting, woodworking or collecting
• Do crossword puzzles and play board games • Read a range of books, magazines and online articles on different subjects • Learn a new language Physical activities can include low-impact exercises like walking, continued on page 17

OmniTrans’ Fair Hikes and Route Changes San Bernardino
O
n Tuesday, September 3, 2019 OmniTrans implemented a series of changes impacting bus riders across its service
area. This marked the first time in five years the agency raised fares. In addition, it added a new route, eliminated freeway express Route 208 and implemented additional route changes designed to enhance connectivity for riders while also improving efficiency. A single bus trip increased from $1.75 to $2.00 while the one-day pass rate increased from $5.00 to $6.00. Other increases included a $5.00 increase in the cost of a 31-day pass from $55 to $60; a $2 increase in the cost of a 7-day pass from $18 to $20. Despite these changes, persons with disabilities, seniors age 62 and up, military veterans and youth age 18 and under continue to be eligible for reduced rates. The cost of OmniTrans Access service also experienced a rate hike—the
base fare is now $3.75 up from $3.25. OmniTrans’ Access service transports persons with disabilities who qualify under the Americans with Disability Act (ADA). Although the agency cut the freeway express Route 208 which travelled Interstate 10 between Yucaipa, Redlands and San Bernardino was cut due to low ridership, the bus company does offer two local bus routes which connect those three communities—Routes 8 and 19. The newly added Route 12 provides a direct connection between Fontana and Rialto to Cal State San Bernardino. It replaces and duplicates parts of existing Route 11. According to OmniTrans officials, Route 12 will serve major employment centers including Amazon warehouses and the Renaissance Marketplace in Rialto. Route 22 was also realigned to serve the Renaissance Marketplace. Several underutilized early morning and late evening trips

he new student body president of Crafton Hills College (CHC), 21-year-old Tyrone Ross has a message for students everywhere. “I want students to realize – especially younger students – that community college is a good thing and not a bad thing to pursue,” he said. “I believe we live in a society where college can be a huge expense for many, but a community college helps you go through college without breaking the bank and helps elevate your status.” Originally from Pittsburgh, PA and now a resident of Redlands, Ross wanted to attend college and play football after graduating from high school but rand into financial challenges due to out-of-state tuition costs. As a result, he was forced to temporarily put his education on the back burner. He took a job at a local warehouse to save enough money to school. In Spring 2020 he will graduate from CHC with an associate degree in communications. Ross plans to continue his studies at a four-year institution where he will work toward a bachelor’s in communications with a minor in international business. Although the road to success may have been a bumpy one for Ross, he is determined to

reach out to those with similar challenges and encourage them to pursue higher learning by looking at the “bigger picture.” “If I can find a way to afford college, you can, too,” he said. “You have to think outside of the box sometimes because nothing comes easy. It takes a lot of thinking and determination to see it through, but it’s worth it.”
Not only does Ross want to bring attention to the work being done at CHC, but he also wants to develop a “Buddy System” that would help incoming students find their footing and excel in their studies. He also wants to be the voice for those “stuck in the middle,” particularly students who do not qualify for the California continued on page 17

Celebrating the Life of John M. Futch, Jr. San Bernardino
C
itizens and leaders from across the region gathered at the Cal State San Bernardino Student Union on Saturday, August 24, 2019 to celebrate the life and honor the memory of community member and leader John M. Futch, Jr. A longtime resident and community leader, Futch earned a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a master’s degree in Social Sciences at CSUSB where he later became an administrator. His impact on the university is certain to endure. Among his many contribution there, he provided a platform for Native American educators, artists and performers and played a pivotal role in bringing San Manuel’s California Native American Day Children’s Program to CSUSB. In addition, the San Manuel Pow Wow, the Tribe’s largest event of the year, is hosted at the university due to large part to his efforts. Futch also served as a Trustee with the San Bernardino Community College District; Chief of Staff to his close friend former Board of Supervisor and California Assemblyman James Ramos; and most recently he was elected President of the San Bernardino Branch of the NAACP. His service to the community did not end there. He was also a liaison to law enforcement and member of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Information Exchange Committee. As part of his life-long commitment to education, in 2007 the “Friends of John Futch Textbook Scholarship” was launched. The initiative provides book scholarships for students. Priority is given to those involved in community service, first generation college students and students from groups which are historically underserved. Futch passed away on August 11, 2019 at the age of 69. Top Left: California Assemblyman James Ramos pays tribute to longtime friend John M. John M. Futch was a man known and loved by many... I loved him and I’m so greatful for the huge impact he had on my life. I will miss him and his laugh. I’m praying for his family and really for all of us as he had such an impact on so many. John Futch was one of my first bosses (CSUSB, Cross Cultural Center) and many of the lessons he taught me about leadership and networking I still use today. But more importantly he was what I aspire to be... a bridge and an advocate for students. If you don’t believe me just keep reading... John Futch is the person who first thought Jonathan Buffong and I would make a good team. So he and Beverly Jones-Wright put us together on a project called TURN (starting a life long friendship). TURN also included students like Delilah Williams and Oropeza Law. He allowed me to hire who ever I wanted to DJ CSUSB campus events and preferred it be students... Say hello then DJ Alex Avila. He would often push students to do more and so Fatima Cristerna-Adame and I would join ASI. We were often seen as the trouble makers on the Board of Directors and gave Corey Jackson the blues LOL. John loved it! And he loved us. John would send me to expensive political dinners in his place allowing me to meet many people but one such dinner was a CSUSB/SBVC collab. where I would meet Leah Barnes a young woman who would become my little sister. As his graduate student assistant he “put me in charge” and taught me to expect great things and stop playing small. He hired me to be the Liasion for the Santos Manuel Band of Mission Indians Pow Wow continued on page 17

Something Happened on Appian Way—Pt. 1 Was it a case of “Partying While Black” or an abuse and misuse of perceived authority by a purportedly, belligerent, retired justice, coupled with a potential abuse of power by police officers on the scene who may have acquiesced to a retired judge’s commands and allegedly worked to cover-up what actually happened; or, was it a disturbing convergence of all of this? he Code of Conduct for Judges states they should avoid lending the prestige of judicial office to advance the private interests of him/herself or others. The Judicial Code also includes a series of canons (rules of reason), one of which states in part, “A judge should avoid impropriety and the appearance of impropriety in all activities...This prohibition applies to both professional and personal conduct...A judge should not allow family, social, political, financial, or other relationships to influence judicial conduct or judgment. A judge must expect to be the subject of constant public scrutiny and accept freely and willingly restrictions that might be viewed as burdensome by the ordinary citizen.” The Commission on Judicial Performance is the independent state
agency responsible for investigating complaints of judicial misconduct and for disciplining judges. What happens however, when the person who may have behaved badly is retired and no longer on the bench but represents himself as if he still wields some form of judicial authority? In an exchange with The IE Voice/Black Voice News, a spokesperson for the California Judges Association (CJA) said, “This is not a judicial ethics matter.” Adding, “If the judge is off the bench and is doing things like (allegedly) behaving badly in his private life, he is not a judge any longer and is not subject to the canon of ethics.” According to CJA, a retired judge has the same level of authority as every other citizen—and NO MORE THAN THAT...Consider this information as a prelude to the story.

F E A T U R E On Saturday, a hot June night early this summer, several young adults gathered in an affluent section of Riverside at a home on Appian Way for what the host described as a birthday celebration. Everyone in attendance was having a good time until something went curiously wrong. According to one of the hosts, Carlos Smith, sometime during the celebration, between 5:00 and 5:30 p.m., the DJ announced cars were being towed and [parking] citations issued by officers of the Riverside Police Department. “I made my way to the front entrance of the backyard to see if there was any validity to the announcement,” Smith explained. According to Smith several cars of those attending the party had been cited even though they were legally parked and there were no signs anywhere to indicate any parking restrictions. In addition, there were no markings for special access for emergency vehicles if needed according to his observation and the assessment of others attending the event. “If this were the case,” Smith explained, “then the police vehicles (which are considered emergency vehicles) would not have been able to come through the street and approach the residence.” Smith said he recognized one of the policemen, Officer E. Johansen from the previous weekend when there was a wedding at the same residence and neighbors had called to complain. “I approached him and began to inform him that he was here at this address a week before.” According to Smith many who attended the wedding had parked in the same locations and not a single citation was written, there was no noise disturbance—according to Smith, “No issues occurred.” Concerned about the police presence Smith said he was reassured by the officer, “It was all good.” He further stated, that it was a “bunch of old people who called—you know, taxpayers who have nothing better to do. Enjoy yourself. You people are all good,” he assured. “Just turn the bass down a little.” Smith said he stood in the middle of the street talking with Officer Johansen for two to three minutes when out of nowhere he explained, “An individual intentionally came from behind me and slammed into me—like a truck in a car accident—knocking me into Officer Johansen and then giving me a ‘mad dog’ look while pulling out a badge of some type.” According to Smith the man proceeded to shove the badge in the officer’s face. The man was soon identified as retired Superior Court Judge William R. Bailey, the father of Riverside Mayor Rusty Bailey. At this point according to Smith, “[Bailey] grabbed Officer Johansen and pulled him by his arm like a little child 15 to

20 feet away” and started yelling at him and giving him orders to shut the party down. Smith alleged Bailey, “threatened to have Officer Johansen fired if he did not follow his commands. He further declared, “[H]e and the mayor run the City of Riverside and Riverside Police Department.” For Smith and his guests, the situation continued to deteriorate. As guests scrambled to move their cars, the retired judge purportedly yelled racial slurs, “You people get out of here. You are messing up the neighborhood,” while also using racial slurs referring to them as “monkeys.” He reportedly continued this behavior while standing in the middle of the street in the presence of Officer Johansen and his partner, inciting the incident even further. Smith lamented, “They did nothing to calm the situation, or the judge. They allowed him to take control of the entire incident.” Retired Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) Sergeant Alicia Williams who was attending the party, joined the discussion between Smith and the officer. She introduced herself and requested Johansen summon his sergeant. Sgt. Collins arrived at the scene (apparently out of uniform) however rather than having a calming effect on the situation, things only seemed to worsen for Smith and homeowner Debbie Shelton–Love, also a retired Sergeant with the LASD. “Collins threatened to fine Shelton–Love $1000.00 and implement a Citizens Complaint Form against her if I filed an Assault and Battery complaint against Bailey,” Smith continued. “In addition, Officer Johansen threatened to fine the DJ and me $1000.00 and take the DJ’s property if he did not turn music off.” Smith said he told the officers he wanted the judge arrested for the assault. At the very least he continued, “I should have been given a Citizen’s Arrest Form to sign and a booking slip as the arresting officer—this was a misdemeanor committed in the presence of a peace officer (Officer Johansen).” According to Smith, he was never given this option. Instead Sgt. Collins instructed another on the scene, Officer Hill, to get his information and only do an additional information report. Smith said he feels his rights as a citizen of the City of Riverside were violated by the Riverside Police Department. Smith is convinced the incident showed evidence of unethical practices and broken policies by the officers and sergeant who responded that day. “I hope justice is well served,” he asserted adding, because at this point, “I
E
S T O R Y clearly see [the] Riverside Police Department is not acting [in alignment with] ethical standards.” “I embrace the investigation,” he affirmed, “But, I will not settle for [a] slap on the hand for the officers involved. As it’s significant that we hold William R. Bailey Sr. and the officers accountable for their mistakes.” Smith expressed his belief the entire situation should have been handled differently and professionally across the board. He stressed again how the officers failed to provide him an opportunity to execute a citizen’s arrest even when the probable assault occurred in the presence of Officer Johansen. “Instead Riverside [police] protected the retired judge.” To make matters worse, they threatened to fine the homeowner and filed a citizen’s arrest against her instead in retaliation. “I think this was unprofessional and a violation to RPD’s core values.” Others have confirmed Smith’ version of the story however as might be expected, the RPD offered a far different version of what happened. Smith repudiates their version of events. According to the RPD Case Report, that day the department received a total of ten calls complaining about parking at the Appian Way address in Riverside. The report also noted the officer had responded to a complaint at the same address a week earlier noted in the report as “another” loud music call the previous Saturday, June 22, 2919. Interestingly, the ten calls noted at the beginning of the report that triggered the police response on June 29, made no reference to noise on a party and parking. The officer said when he arrived on the scene, he heard music and announcements at a distance of about 50 yards from the property and noticed approximately 50 vehicles parked along Appian Way, 20 of which he reported, created a safety hazard due to blocking the roadway in violation of California Vehicle Code Section §22500 (g). He went on to note how he and his partner collectively issued a total of 13 parking citations for violating this section of the code—a section used when a parked car obstructs traffic—an issue disputed by Smith. According to Officer Johansen’s report, he asked several party attendees who the homeowner was, “But, no on knew. One individual stated that he was unsure because the location was being rented out.” Johansen said he was approached by Smith who he recognized as the alleged owner of the residence from his previous response to the location on June 22. He reported Smith asked him, “You were out here last week, right?” The officer confirmed that he was, and Smith asked to speak with him privately. He said he walked with Smith
down the street at his request and answered his questions as to why multiple vehicles had been cited along the street. He claimed Smith said, “Come on, man,” as he grabbed him by the right shoulder with his left hand. Johansen claimed he told Smith, “Do me a favor, don’t touch me.” He stated Smith let go of him and he said, “Thanks, I appreciate it.” Then according to the officer, as he continued explaining the situation to Smith, retired Riverside Superior Court Judge William Bailey approached Smith and shook hands with him. “Bailey informed Smith that he had a Mrs. White in his vehicle and “[S]he was crying due to the stress caused by Smith’s ongoing events.” According to the officer, Bailey then said, that “[T]he event needed to stop and gently patted him on the shoulder— as he walked away. Johansen went on to explain how Smith initially did not respond to his request to turn the music down. Although Smith claims he did, it was not lowered to the officer’s satisfaction. According to the officer, Smith invited him to go in and speak with the DJ about the music. After doing so the officer said Smith again asked to speak with him privately and purportedly said, “This is going to get really ugly.” “As I reached the street with Smith, he introduced me to a friend who was in attendance at the event. The subject identified herself as an off-duty Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy named Alicia. However, she refused to provide me with a last name and demanded a supervisor and my business card.” Johansen said he provided her with a report number and the card.” According to Johansen when Sgt. Collins arrived on the scene as requested, “Smith made allegations of crimes committed against him by Bailey and I.” He declared in his report Smith violated the city’s general noise regulation and recommended his report be forwarded to Riverside’s Attorney General Office. Follow Part 2 of this story in next week’s edition of The IE Voice/Black Voice News. It is believed this unidentified young lady who attended the party on Appian Way in Riverside Saturday, June 29, 2019 may have captured the entire interaction involving Carlos Smith, Officer E. Johansen, and retired Superior Court Judge William R. Bailey. Smith is asking her to please come forward as her video of the incident will corroborate his version of events. Please email Carlos Smith at or contact the reporter at stephanie@ voicemediaventures.com. You can also call the office at (951) 682-6070.

Riverside Announces Interim Police Chief Riverside
L
ate last month Riverside City Manager Al Zelinka announced the city’s police department’s Deputy Chief of Administration Larry Gonzalez will serve as Interim Police Chief on the retirement of Chief Sergio Diaz effective September 15, 2019. Diaz has served as the Riverside’s Chief of Police since July 2010. During his tenure as Chief according to Zelinka, Diaz focused on reducing crime, enhancing the Department’s relationship with the communities it serves, developing personnel to ever-higher standards of service and achieving greater efficiencies in the delivery of police services. Gonzalez, a 26year RPD veteran, has held his current position, one of two Deputy Chiefs directly under Chief Diaz, since June 2017. “Larry Gonzalez is the right person to continue that strong leadership while we take the time on the selection process for this very important position,” Zelinka noted. In the meantime, Riverside will conduct

an open recruitment process, with input from community members and assistance from a firm specializing in police chief recruitments, before naming Larry Gonzalez its next chief, according to Zelinka. He further commented on how such input regarding what community members want from a new chief will help inform the city’s selection process. A tentative schedule calls for selecting a new police chief by January. As Interim Chief, Gonzalez is eligible to compete for the job. Mayor Rusty Bailey expressed his support
San Bernardino – West Valley Water District Assistant General Manager Logan Olds left his position with the agency effective August 30. 2019. Having just joined the WVWD in June, his career with the organization lasted about two months. Announcing Logan’s departure, WVWD General Manager Clarence Logan Olds Mansell, Jr. described Olds as a dedicated professional in the water resources field. “The service and results he provided to the ratepayers of our district is invaluable”, he added noting, “Our Administration, the Board of Directors, and staff are greatly thankful for his accomplishments during his tenure.” Although no explanation was provided regarding Logan’s sudden departure there is speculation, he wanted to remove himself from the ongoing allegations/tensions that continue to plague the agency. “Everyone at West Valley Water District wishes Logan Olds all the best in his future endeavors,” concluded Mansell.

work he has done to bring the community together to proactively combat homelessness. This has included both outreach and enforcement efforts, coupled with housing expansion for those who are willing to accept services. In December of 2018, Riverside opened the doors to the Grove Village, four housing units coupled with strong community support provided by the Grove Community Church. This project is being looked upon nationally as a model approach. Although Bailey’s decision not to run for a third term may have surprised some residents, several candidates wasted no time announcing their intent to replace him. Everyone looks at the top and bottom, but no one looks at the middle,” Ross explains. “Anything that’s worthwhile has a price. We’re all going to have struggles at times, but you have to persevere through that. If you can persevere and make it through those struggles, there’s light at the end of the tunnel.” Ross wants to start a “Buddy System” program at CHC to help incoming students and also serve as a voice for students “stuck in the middle” who do not qualify for California’s Promise Program. swimming and dancing. Do some strengthening exercises (after clearing with your doctor), like working out on weight machines or with elastic bands. Work on balance with tai chi or yoga. Remember when starting on an exercise program: • Choose activities that you like; you’ll be more likely to stick with it • Make physical activity a part of everyday • Don’t overdo it, start slow and go slow • Exercise with a friend or a group — chatting as you work out makes it go faster and easier • Have fun! Futch, continued from page 7 introducing me further to James Ramos. He also sent me on my first Footsteps to Freedom trip with Theresa Brannon where I met Wil Greer and LaTanya Greer, Cheryl Brown, Hardy Brown II, Paulette Brown-Hinds and Daniel Walker. I would come back from that trip with a new fire to serve and Jon Buffong, Alex and I would begin talking about forming Project Action, with some help from Keynasia Buffong & Onya Robertson we would officially get started and he would let me use the center for our Project Action meetings which included Rachel Lee, Danielle Williams, Anthony Blacksher, Rafael Rawls and soooo many others. Also the center was a safe place where folks could get away and study etc... hello De Deniesha Culverson and Elyzabeth Green-Jackson. John pushed me to be the African Student Alliance Advisor while in grad school, this led me to Tyree Vance, Jeremy Vasquez, and so many other amazing students. He even worked with Denise Benton to get me hired to teach freshman seminar at age 23! Which would allow me years later to hire a 19 year old Monica Stockhausen to be my student assistant creating a desire in her to teach. So as you can see John was a bridge in my life and many many others. He advocated for students in a way I rarely see today and when I would say, “John you can’t say that” he would say, “what are they going to do fire me? Let them. I’m not here for the bull---- I’m here for the students!” And he was... he was always there for the students. Thank you for all you did for me and all those after me. I will miss you sir. Rest In Peace. -Alise Clouser

president’s wish list for themselves and others. Members of the LGBTQ community are among the groups most targeted for hate crimes particularly Black transgender women who continue to be murdered at an alarming rate with barely a mention in the national media. Years ago, I visited my daughter while she spent a semester studying at the Paris-Sorbonne University. During my stay we took a short three-day excursion to the beautiful city of Amsterdam where we toured the usual tourist sights including the Rodin Museum and the home where Anne Frank and her family hid from the Nazis in World War II, among others. While there my daughter took me to a site she’d discovered quite by accident months earlier. “I want you to see this,” she said compassionately as she guided me to the site. The place was the Homomonument, a memorial in the center of Amsterdam. It was the first monument in the world to commemorate gays and lesbians who were killed by the Nazis because of their homosexuality. It takes the form three large pink triangles made of granite set into the ground so as to form a larger triangle, on the bank of the Keizersgracht canal. The monument was designed to “inspire and support lesbians and gays in their struggle against denial, oppression and discrimination.” Although lesbians were not as severely punished, thousands of gay men were castrated, and thousands more died inglorious deaths in Nazi concentration camps. Unlike the yellow Star of David Nazis forced members of the Jewish community to wear, gays were forced to wear a pink triangle as a mark of identification and shame. Even more disturbing is after the war, homosexual concentration camp prisoners were not acknowledged as victims of Nazi persecution, as a result, they were refused reparations. It may sound cliché that history repeats itself and we certainly pray it will not but sometimes as we laugh and joke about Trump’s absurd and embarrassing antics, we can lose sight of his dangerous targeting of vulnerable groups in this nation. If he will cage children and refuse them medical care, what else is he capable of? I believe it is incumbent on each of us to remain vigilant for all of us. Of course, this is just my opinion. I’m keeping it real.
