his year voting is being complicated by the coronavirus and warranted concerns related to the slowing of mail service and other forms of voter suppression. Experts encourage every voter to help ensure these concerns do not become roadblocks to casting his/her ballot. The best ways to overcome or neutralize these concerns is to be educated regarding what is expected of voters this election cycle. The ongoing disruption in daily norms is requiring all of us to not only plan our vote but to also vote early and encourage others to do the same. The most important first step in planning your vote is to check your voting status and ensure nothing has changed in the official record since you last voted; or if you are newly registered, to confirm you are in the voter database. This can be accomplished with a quick visit to the Secretary of State’s website to check your voting status. You can do so by following this link. This year, every registered voter in California will be mailed a ballot no later than 29 days prior to Election Day. In addition, early voting
and in person voting will also be available just as in previous election years. For those planning to vote by mail, remember your ballot must be postmarked on or before November 3 and received by the Riverside or San Bernardino County election’s office, no later than November 20. Voters can also return their ballots in person to their county elections office or any polling place in the county before 8:00 pm on November 3. Any registered voter can also go to the county elections office in person to request and receive a vote by mail ballot. The Riverside County registrar of voter’s office is located at 2724 Gateway Drive, Riverside and in San Bernardino at 777 E. Rialto Avenue, San Bernardino. Both offices are opened Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Because health directives to prevent the spread of COVID-19 have resulted in reduced continued on page 17

El Dorado Fire Evacuations
San Bernardino, CA – The El Dorado Fire which started in Yucaipa’s El Dorado Park Saturday morning September 4 had consumed nearly 13,000 acres by Thursday afternoon September 10 and was only 23 percent contained and evacuation orders were issued to several communities including Angelus Oaks and Onyx Summit along Highway 38, Forest Falls, Oak Glen, North Bench Yucaipa, Mountain Home Village, Hidden Meadows and a portion of southern Cherry Valley were also evacuated, according to San Bernardino County officials. “Our firefighters continue to combat this fire and are putting their lives on the line to protect lives and property,” said County Fire Chief Dan Munsey. “We’re making progress, but we implore residents to follow evacuation orders for their own safety and the safety of firefighters.”

couple's plan to reveal their baby's gender went up not in blue or pink smoke but in flames when the device they used sparked a wildfire that burned thousands of acres and forced people to flee from a city east of Los Angeles. The fire prompted evacuations in parts of Yucaipa, a city of 54,000, and the surrounding area. Water-dropping helicopters were brought in but the fire has proven stubborn — it grew to 11.5 square miles (30 square kilometers) by Monday morning and more than 500 firefighters on the scene only had minimal containment. No homes have burned and no injuries reported. It's the latest in what has become a lengthy list of tragedies at events where typically smoke, confetti, balloons or other colored objects are used to reveal the soon-to-be-born child's biological sex — pink for girls and blue for boys. gatherings are spectacles and include explosives and even guns, and at least one had deadly consequences. The fire started Saturday morning at El Ranch Dorado Park, a rugged natural area popular with hikers and dog owners. In summer the park's tall natural grasses dry out and turn golden, and when combined with the San Bernardino Mountains in the distance, provide a popular backdrop for family photos and videos. Wildfires have burned more than 2 million acres in California this year, setting a state record even as crews battled dozens of growing blazes Monday in sweltering temperatures. The unidentified couple chose the location to reveal their baby's gender. They were accompanied by their young children and had a friend or relative videoing on a cell phone, said Capt. Bennet Milloy of the California

Black Voters: We Are Top Targets of Voter Suppression ‘Information Warfare’
B
lack voters have a powerful role to play in this year’s elections. That’s why we are being targeted by disinformation campaigns that are meant to discourage and suppress our Ben Jealous turnout. President, People For We can’t let them the American Way succeed. Black voters are still targeted by old-school voter suppression strategies like restricting registration, closing polling stations, and limiting early voting. On top of all that, we are now top targets in “information warfare” campaigns designed to drive down Black turnout by any means possible. Robert Mueller’s investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election reported that no group of Americans was targeted by Russian intelligence more than African Americans. That same year, Trump campaign officials admitted to running a “major” voter suppression effort to depress the Black vote. Republican strategists and far-right activists studied those tactics and are using them now—including fake accounts on social media pretending to be Black people— “digital blackface.” In August, right-wing political smear agents sent robocalls to Black voters in Detroit spreading false information about voting by mail. There is absolutely no truth to claims that voting by mail would allow credit card companies or police to get access to personal information. Why spread these lies in Michigan? Because every vote counts. In 2016, 90,000 people who went to the polls decided not to vote in the presidential election— more than Trump’s margin of victory in the state. The goal of such campaigns to depress the Black vote is to rob us of our power to make the difference in this year’s elections. The forces behind these efforts will do anything to keep President Donald Trump and his enablers in power. At the same time, Trump and the GOP have embraced promoters of the dangerous “QAnon” conspiracy theory that is spreading online,
because they hope to turn this formerly fringe group into Trump voters this fall. QAnon backers claim that Trump is going to make mass arrests to destroy a cabal of Satanic pedophiles—along with a wild array of other conspiracies. QAnon conspiracies have already motivated people to commit violence. Yet Trump praised a Republican congressional candidate who promoted QAnon and published racist videos online. Racist attacks are also being aimed at Sen. Kamala Harris, who made history by becoming Joe Biden’s running mate. Harris is a graduate of Howard University and a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, two of the Black community’s most prominent institutions. But almost immediately, the “information warriors” of the far right started spreading lies about her not being Black—attacking her identity as the daughter of Jamaican and Indian immigrants—and spreading a new version of the birtherism they used against Barack Obama, falsely claiming that she is not eligible to be vice president. The attacks on Harris are a shameless effort to suppress the excitement that so many Black Americans—especially Black women—have about her candidacy. As one report about such efforts recognized, “Black women don’t just go vote, they make sure they get others to vote.” That’s why they are major targets.

We are less than two months from an election in which the gains of the civil rights movement and the future of our freedom are on the line. Political, religious, and community leaders need to sound the alarm. Black Americans need to know that when we are engaging with friends on Facebook or debating politics on Twitter, we are also being targeted by dishonest, manipulative political operatives who want to make us feel hopeless or disgusted by politics so we won’t vote. We cannot let ourselves get played. We need to get good information about where and how to vote from our state election officials or trusted resources like [who should we list here?]. Make a plan to vote and do it as soon as possible. Black people have overcome efforts to stop us from voting for more than 150 years since the Civil War. We won’t stop now. n the Jack H. Brown College at California State University, San Bernardino “Black Education Matters”. During the 2018-19 Academic Year, 5 percent of California State University students were African-American and although educational institutions have worked to maintain diversity and inclusion of students, employees, and staff, they continue to fall short in this regard. Dr. Francisca Beer, Professor, Associate Dean and Director of the CSUSB Jack H. Brown College Office of Academic Equity stressed how despite what institutions have talked about regarding diversity, inclusion and equity, “As far as Black men are concerned, we have in fact made very little progress in the college.” “If you look at data [provided] by the National Center for Education and Statistics for last year or the year before,” she explained. “You will see Black men are all the way down at the bottom among men who go to college, that we retain in college, and who graduate in a timely manner.” Regarding research which shows such a small percentage of college students are Black, Beer opined, “We all know there are more women than men who go to college—that is true for all ethnic groups, I understand that,” she qualified and asserted. “Even if you are very optimistic and say
okay of the 5 percent of students who are Black, there is going to be about half or 2.5 percent of students who are Black men. This is nothing.” “Just looking at the numbers and realizing we are educators; we should definitely be alarmed.” These statistics characterized numerous institutions in the country, in California and probably in the Inland Empire. This is why we have created the College’s Office of Academic Equity in 2018. Our Dean, Dr. Lawrence Rose is committed to trying to make changes. “Black Students Education Matters” said Beer. This was just the beginning of concerns related to Black male students identified by Beer. She highlighted how the data noted above only spoke about new students (incoming freshmen). “You could very well be a new student but never graduate,” she argued.adding, “[O]or, be a new student, let’s say, who enters in 2020 and graduates in eight or nine years.” These are the kinds of issues she believes need to be explored and discussed. Statistics like these, she admitted, caused her to be alarmed. She even reflected on the lack of diversity in her own teaching experience at the school. “I realized as a finance professor, 99.9 % of the time I am the only Black woman in the department, let alone a Black man.” I know the

I teamed up with them because of their ability to reach others, and the beauty was that one of my students was president of the brotherhood.” Beer successfully recruited him to join the effort. She described the SAAB input as invaluable. It included the need to address Black male students’ feelings of isolation, of not being part of the group, of the lack of tutoring, lack of mentoring, a lack of role-models, lack of support including financial, academic etc. “So,” she declared, “We decided to address one issue at a time.” Mentor-mentee relationships are viewed as important to these student’s success as it undergirds their ability to develop a network and resources they may not have access to, at least initially.
There is limited information for Black students about opportunities and paths to achieving their educational and career goals. Even when such information is available, many lack the finances needed to avail themselves to such opportunities. “This is how The Voice series started,” Beer explainedreflecting. “In fact, the first Voice series was designed to listen to the academic needs of the students.” But, the first session took a path of its own. “We did not talk about learning at all,” she acknowledged explaining the session was overwhelming from the very beginning when they said to her, “[W]ait, before we talk about learning, we want to talk about homelessness.” They went on to talk about homelessness, food insecurity and mental health needs. “We ended up talking solely about that,” Beer confirmed. Interestingly, students from other colleges decided to join the event,” said Beer. Beer added, “Development of support systems for incoming Black, first-generation students will hopefully help foster these students’ abilities to grow strong identities as Black men, successful students, and future graduates. was expressing calm, and his actions reflect that." She said Trump's actions show that he took COVID-19 seriously. She noted that the president put in place travel restrictions with China on Jan. 31 and said that some Democrats had criticized the move. In an interview with Fox News on Wednesday, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the government's top infectious disease expert, said Trump never "distorted" what Fauci had told the president. "Often he would want to, you know, make sure that the country doesn't get down and out about things, but I don't recall anything that was any gross distortion in things that I spoke to him about," Fauci said. McEnany insisted "the president never downplayed the virus," though Trump himself told Woodward he was "playing it down because I don't want to create a panic." "There is damning truth that President Trump lied and people died," said Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of New York. Schumer said that when he thinks about how many people in his state died, "It just makes me angry." He added, "How many people would be alive today if he just told Americans the truth?" House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said the president's comments to Woodward showed weakness and a disdain for science. "What he was actually saying is, 'I don't want anybody to think anything like this happened on my watch so I'm not going to call any more attention to it,'" Pelosi said on MSNBC. Woodward's book is his second on the Trump White House. The first, published in 2018, portrayed Trump in an unflattering light, and the president fumed at staff that he was not interviewed for it, according to former White House officials and Republicans close to the White House. They were not authorized to speak publicly about private conversations and discussed the matter on condition of anonymity. Trump was convinced that if he had talked to Woodward, it could have led to a more favorable depiction in the book, according to the officials. Trump had always held Woodward in high regard — he considered the journalist as the biggest star in the field — and told aides he must be interviewed if Woodward were to write again, the officials said. Several Republican senators at the Capitol declined to comment on the new book, telling reporters they hadn't yet read it, even when informed of key passages about the virus. "I just can't, can't comment on it," said Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio. "Could we all have done things differently? Yes, including Congress. We were all a little slow to recognize the severity," Portman said. Associated Press writers Jonathan Lemire in New York, Alexandra Jaffe in Warren, Michigan, and Lisa Mascaro in Washington contributed to this report.

“Elections belong to the people. It’s their decision. If they decide to turn their back on the fire and burn their behinds, then they will just have to sit on their blisters.” - Abraham Lincoln access to some buildings, counties have been encouraged to maximize the number of exterior mail ballot drop box locations available to voters in each municipality beginning October 6, 2020, and ending at 8 p.m. on Election Day, November 3, 2020. A preliminary list for Riverside County locations is available here and San Bernardino County here. Although the window of opportunity for voters in Riverside County to weigh in on the list closed Sunday, September 13, voters in San Bernardino County have until Friday September 18 to comment on the locations proposed in the San Bernardino region. San Bernardino voters can submit public comments through 5 p.m. on September 18, 2020, by email at Communications@rov. sbcounty.gov, by fax at (909) 387-2022, and/ or by mail or in-person at 777 E. Rialto Avenue, San Bernardino, CA 92415. Once finalized, these lists of early voting and vote-by-mail ballot drop off locations will also be available on the Secretary of State’s website

that can be easily accessed by following this link. At the risk of being redundant, once again I would like to stress the importance of first ensuring you are registered; second, planning your vote; thirdly, knowing the candidates and issues especially those in your community; and if possible, voting early. As we hear again and again how much is riding on this year’s election, it is especially important not to lose sight of the adage that all politics are local. The community’s priorities established November 3 as expressed in the ballot initiatives supported and candidates elected, will continue to build the foundation of this region’s political power and representation that flows upward to the state and federal levels. For this reason, it is as important as ever before that voters are cleareyed and informed in their choices. Of course, this is just my opinion. I’m keeping it real.

Smokey Conditions Can Be Hazardous San Bernardino – Health officials across the inland region have encouraged residents to take precaution as air quality continues to be negatively impacted by wildfires raging across the state. San Bernardino County Interim Health Officer Dr. Erin Gustafson warned smoky conditions can be hazardous for young children, the elderly, individuals with heart conditions or chronic lung disease such as asthma and bronchitis, and individuals with other respiratory ailments. Older adults and children should remain indoors, keep windows and doors closed or seek alternate shelter. Individuals with respiratory ailments should make sure they have at least a five-day supply of medication on hand. Gustafson further recommended air-conditioners be run on a “recirculation” function. If smoke is present, it will be easier to breathe indoors if air is recirculating instead of drawing smoky air from outdoors. People should contact their doctor if they have symptoms such as chest pain, chest tightness, shortness of breath or severe fatigue.

Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. The family went into a field and fired off the device, which quickly ignited 4-foot (1.2 meter) grasses, Milloy said. Conditions were perfect for a fire to spread quickly — triple-digit temperatures, low humidity, dry vegetation and a stiff breeze. Surveillance video showed the couple frantically race to their vehicle to retrieve water bottles to try to extinguish the flames. It was futile and they called 911. "You can't fight a fire like this with a water bottle," Milloy said. "They had no chance after it started." Firefighters arrived within minutes and the distraught couple told them what happened and provided their own photos and video to aid the investigation, Milloy said. "It's a pretty tragic situation," he said. "Obviously this was supposed to be a happy event." The couple could be liable for the cost of fighting the fire and criminally charged with misdemeanor or felony counts. In 2017, a massive Arizona wildfire was accidentally started by an off-duty Border Patrol agent who shot a target filled with an explosive blue powder. The fire burned 47,000 acres (73 square miles) and caused $8 million in damages, Agent Dennis Dickey was charged with a misdemeanor and sentenced to probation. Last year, a homemade explosive used to reveal a baby's gender killed 56-year-old Pamela Kreimeyer in Knoxville, Iowa. The device was meant to spray powder but instead blew up like a pipe bomb. Kreimeyer, who was standing 45 feet (13 meters) away, died instantly when debris struck her head. Milloy said some devices used to reveal genders are harmless but others contain chemicals that produce heat and can spark fires. He said the device used Saturday will be tested to determine what it contained. Milloy didn't know the color it emitted.
