n Thanksgiving as Californians gather up and down the state to celebrate with family and friends, we are reminded that wildfires continue to scorch the landscape and hundreds of family members and friends are in mourning. The recent burst of wildfires and their resulting devastation has impacted several areas in both northern and southern California. All these fires have disrupted the lives of those in their wake, yet the Camp Fire that swept through the community of Paradise in Butte County, has left an almost unimaginable legacy. As of Monday, firefighters continued efforts to extinguish it. Over the last two weeks it has burned its way into the history books as the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in state history—more than 151,00 acres were already scorched and at least 15,000 structures destroyed. The conflagration which erupted around 6:30 a.m. on Thursday, November 8, by that evening had exploded to 20,000 acres and expanded to 70,000 acres by the time the sun rose the following morning. It appears many residents in several small communities located in the Sierra Nevada foothills, most significantly the small town of Paradise, had little opportunity to outrun its flames. At least 77 have been confirmed dead and hundreds of others remain unaccounted for—any chance they may have survived the inferno now appears unlikely. This Thanksgiving, thousands of family members and friends of the Camp Fire’s missing and dead, will mark this Thanksgiving holiday memorializing those confirmed dead and clinging to waning hope for the ones still missing. As I bow my head surrounded by my family and friends on Thursday, I will do so in gratitude for a blessing I too often take for granted—the gift of marking another year together. I will then turn my thoughts to the family and friends of victims of the Camp Fire and ask that they can somehow find peace, comfort and strength to face the challenging days ahead. Happy Thanksgiving.

Holidays Can Be Challenging for Those in Recovery Riverside – At least one in ten Americans admit to some form of alcohol and/or drug abuse and holidays can be counted among some of the most challenging times of the year for those in recovery. Professionals offer several tips to avoid trials during this season. One of the first way to accomplish this is by avoiding situations that threaten their sobriety. If necessary, attend a 12-step meeting before and after gathering with family/friends. Also, check-in with someone in recovery (i.e. sponsor) before and after a holiday gathering. It’s recommended that family and friends of those in recovery check with their love ones to understand what they need to feel supported. Also, make holiday gatherings substance free to support your family member/friend in recovery and be sure to communicate it in advance to your guests.

ancho Verde High School in Moreno Valley, kicked off college application season with a visit from UC President Janet Napolitano and UCR Chancellor Kim Wilcox, on Friday, Nov. 2. The Rancho Verde Crimson Regiment played as the Mustang class of 2019 filled the gym. Immediately following the entrance there was a performance by the school’s choir. Recent Rancho Verde High School graduate Brenda Romero, now a freshman at UC Riverside, gave students an idea of what the transition from high school to a college campus was like for her. “Finding your true passion is the beauty of college,” Romero shared. She further stressed to the students that their greatest achievement will be their ability to rise-up after they have made a mistake. The event served as inspiration for students to stay steadfast in their pursuit of college and provided information regarding the benefits of choosing a UC school as they pursue higher education. UC President Napolitano discussed the grants and financial aid available for students who choose a UC education such as the Blue and Gold Opportunity Plan. “There are multiple opportunities available and

Happy Thanksgiving: Pass the Sweet Potatoes, but not the Politics
I
t goes without saying, something most Americans are NOT thankful for on this Thanksgiving holiday is the state of the country’s political discourse, with 86 percent of the public having a negative view of it according to recent national polls. More than half of Americans who say they celebrate Thanksgiving are dreading talking about politics at their Thanksgiving dinner. Here’s a tip, try passing the potatoes, but not the politics. During the season of “thanks,” when many are focusing on their blessings, it is tough; Thanksgiving is a time for family. It’s the one time every year that you get to eat grandma’s famous stuffing, see your cousins, the one time when three platefuls of food is actually a reasonable amount. But many Americans are apprehensive about Thanksgiving. The polarizing politics divides, especially in our friendships and families. It’s easy to avoid people who don’t share the same political beliefs, except when it’s the holiday season, and those people are family members. What if you don’t want to talk politics with
Uncle William? What if you’re worried about the opposing views of Aunt Judy and Grandpa? How do you avoid turning a family atmosphere into a hostile one? Work out a ‘keep the peace’ game plan. After all, these aren’t strangers. They’re family. You know who might bring up the election, or whose political views you don’t agree with. So prepare. It also wouldn’t hurt to have another debate topic, like a new baby, pending wedding, or graduation. If talking about politics always leads to a screaming match or hurt feelings, then avoid it. Don’t talk about it. Maybe that’s not easy for your family. What if someone brings up the midterm elections and suddenly that’s the topic on hand? Instead of engaging in the conversation, stay quiet. Just stay consumed with your turkey and Grandma’s sweet potatoes. Set some ground rules. If talking about the election is unavoidable, then set a time and place. The backyard is fair game. So is the living room. But the dinner table? That’s a safe zone.
Enjoy your food and company. Maybe talk about the election after dinner and dessert. If someone is really passionate about Donald Trump or Nancy Pelosi instead of debating them, why not listen? The more you listen, the more you’ll learn the emotions behind their views. Maybe you’ll find something to agree on. Maybe you’ll cordially agree to disagree. But neither conclusion is possible if you don’t listen. Be thankful. Remember that Thanksgiving is a time for family. It’s a time to be thankful for those you’re with. No families agree on everything. But you’re family. If political conversations get out of hand, affirm to the table that your relationships are deeper than the politics that sadly pits families against families, friends against friends, Americans against Americans. When we do these things, we are happier people and happier nation. From our house to yours, Happy Thanksgiving!

Initiative to Reduce Chronic Absenteeism Andrea M. Baldrias Contributor
T
he State Board of Education will adopt a performance matrix that addresses the chronic absenteeism rate in schools and Local Educational Agencies (LEAs). Potentially half of California’s (LEAs) will be identified as failing to meet chronic absenteeism standards. State law defines chronic absenteeism as any student who is absent 10 percent or more from school, regardless of the reason. The California State Board has recommended a five-level indicator to improve attendance performance. To evade the failing category, schools and LEAs are required to have a chronic absenteeism rate of five percent or less. The medium-level status requires a five to 10 percent rate. The high level is from 10 to 20 percent chronic absenteeism. California School Districts currently hold a chronic absenteeism rate just above 10 percent. Within the 2013 Local Control Funding Formula, Governor Jerry Brown and California legislators stressed attendance as a key factor to successfully restructuring public schools. Presently, LEAs collect and report their absentee rates as part of their Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP). If the board follows through with staff recommendations, LEAs will receive a color score corresponding to their absenteeism rate. The color grade will be included in the 2018 California Dashboard—the state’s web-based system that allows parents and the public to view school performance rates. The consequences for schools who are given a red or orange indicator are unclear. The board is giving some schools an adjustment period to adapt to the new systems before state sanctions or interventions are
considered. The current state board’s membership will shift in January 2019 when the newly elected governor, Gavin Newson, takes office. Following the retirement of Mike Kirst, the board leader under Governor Brown, Newson plans to appoint a new board president. Additional input is also expected from a new state superintendent of public instruction. On Saturday, Assemblymember Tony Thurmond was declared the state’s newly elected Superintendent of Public Instruction.
SB International Airport Authority Project Will Create Thousands of Local Jobs Andrea M. Baldrias Contributor
O
n October 26, the San Bernardino International Airport Authority (SBIAA) Commission adopted a resolution certifying the Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the Eastgate Building 1 Project. This project will be implemented over the next year. The Eastgate Building 1 Project is an Air Cargo Logistics Center that affects about 101.5 acres of unused land at the San Bernardino International Airport. The development of this project is facilitated by the EIR certification. In the City of San Bernardino, a certified EIR is required prior to obtaining building permits. Hillwood Enterprises, L.P, the project developer, is strategizing to include a distribution center, maintenance building, onsite aircraft operations
infrastructure, and two bridges to pave access to Third Street. It is projected the Eastgate Building 1 Project will generate more than 3,880 aviation-related job opportunities in the San Bernardino region. By opening day in 2019, it is anticipated the Center will have 12 take-offs and landings daily. Within five years, that number is expected to increase to 26 per day. After sixteen years of a private partnership with SBIAA, collaborating with Hillwood Enterprises on this project will positively impact the community by creating unique job opportunities. It is a significant milestone for their relationship, and further connects new air cargo facilities at Alliance-California and SBD International to the rest of the globe. Tony Thurman in Race to Become State Superintendent of Public Instruction
Sacramento - For only the second time in the state’s history California voters have elected an African American to serve as the state’s top educator. In a tight race that was competitive from the start, on Saturday although votes remained uncounted, charter school candidate Marshall Tuck conceded to State Tony Thurmond Assemblyman Tony Thurman. It was a hard- fought victory for Thurman who was out spent at a rate of two to one by Tuck who also had the support of President Donald Trump and his Secretary of Education, Betsy Devos, relationships that in California may have worked against him despite his campaign finance advantage.

A Time for Thanksgiving
N
ovember is the time of the year when holidays draw near, and we take time to reflect on those things for which we are thankful. This year my family and I have much more to be thankful for with the opportunities I have had and those, which I have recently been granted. I would first like to thank the constituents of the Third District for allowing me t o serve them over the past six years. Your trust and faith James Ramos Assemblymember- in me to serve as your Elect Supervisor is appreciated and was never taken for granted. It has truly been an honor to serve you. I would also like to thank my staff members who have worked hard to bring resolutions to issues affecting our district. My staff worked diligently with county departments to assist constituents, their communities and help the invaluable businesses we have in this district. You have done a wonderful job and I am thankful to have worked with each of you. Without the hard work of all the County staff members from Public Works, Behavioral Health and so many more, we would not have had the success we did helping constituents find housing, providing safer and more reliable roads, or securing services for our esteemed veterans and those in need. I thank each Department director and staff, who have ensured the needs of the residents in this county were met.
N E W S
I will always have the utmost respect and appreciation for the thousands of San Bernardino County first responders who work tirelessly day in and day out to ensure our families are safe. During my time as Supervisor, we faced unfortunate tragedies together. My thoughts and prayers continue to be with the family of our fallen hero, Deputy Jeremiah MacKay who made the ultimate sacrifice in 2013 and with the survivors a n d the families of the victims of the December 2nd tragedy. We will never forget. Last but not least, I would like to thank my fellow colleagues on the Board. It has been an honor serving with you and I look forward to continuing our work together. As my time as your Supervisor comes to an end, I look back on the many things we have accomplished for our district. We have created a stronger connection with the unincorporated areas of our County, ensured public safety services and a safe water supply for constituents in remote locations. We have made significant progress in ending homelessness, especially for our veterans and youth. We have worked diligently to bring new projects to our district such as the upcoming completion of the new Big Bear Alpine Zoo and the continued work on the Pioneertown Water Pipeline Project. I am especially grateful to serve the community as the first Native American elected to this office. It is fitting that during National Native American Heritage Month, I am able to reflect on the progress that has been made with many diverse cultures and the work that I will continue to do at the state level.

B R I E F Camp Fire Catastrophe Butte County – The death toll continues to rise in the worst wildfire disaster in the state’s history, the Camp Fire that tore through the community of Paradise was unforgiving. Officials say there are now 76 known dead and the number of missing has climbed to nearly 1500. In the meantime, the fire continues to burn. By Saturday the fire was still only 62 percent contained. It has already destroyed more than 9,800 homes and burned 149,000 acres. “We’re all going to work together, and we’ll do a real job, but this is very sad to see,” said President Donald Trump when he visited the fire ravaged area last Saturday afternoon. Riverside University Health System Medical Center Renamed Marion and Mary Ashley Health Education and Conference Center Shiane D. Jacocks Contributor
I
n 1898, the Riverside University Health System Medical Center (RUHS), Riverside County’s first general hospital opened its doors. Recently, the RUHS and Conference Center, was renamed in honor of retiring Riverside County Supervisor Marion Ashley and his wife Mary, for their long-lasting commitment to public service. On Wednesday November 14, the couple stood among their friends, family and colleagues who congratulated them on this accomplishment. The newly named campus of the public teaching hospital, Marion and Mary Ashely Health Education and Conference Center, is where thousands of doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and other top-preforming heath care professionals train annually. Those in attendance agreed that both wife and husband, due to their tremendous amount of public service, deserve to see their names on what they helped build. Mary Ashley is a founding member of the
nonprofit RUHS Foundation. Since it launched 29 years ago, the Foundation has raised millions of dollars to support pediatric and other programs at the Medical Center through signature events like the Festival of Trees, an event that takes place each year. This year the event will be held November 20 through 28 in downtown Riverside. Since Marion Ashley was elected County Supervisor of the Fifth District in 2002, he has watched the Medical Center grow and expand into the “pillar of excellence” it has become today. At the end of 2018, he will retire from his longtime post after 16 years. In the 125-year history of the RUHS Medical Center, the hospital has faced challenges staying afloat. Just five years ago, Dr. Arnold Tabuenca, Chief Medical Officer at RUHS Medical Center said it was losing $1 million a week. “There were many voices in the community saying, ‘close the doors’, ‘sell the hospital’, ‘let it go,’” Tabuenca confessed. “I honestly believe continued on page 17

Celebrating the Gifts of Relationships with Family and Friends S.E. Williams Contributor
T
he Dali Lama said, “We can live without religion and meditation, but we cannot survive without human affection.” Thanksgiving Day is one of the special times each year we are intimately reminded of the value of relationships. Gathering with family and friends on this day is an American tradition as older than the nation itself. When people wonder about the true value of holidays, according to Dr. Stephen Sinatra of the Heart MD Institute, most would agree—”it is the joy of connecting with those you love and care for, and the opportunity to spend time with them.” That need to be connected lies at the very heart of human existence, Sinatra explained. These relationships are not only at the core
of our existence, they help shape the contours of our lives. Sinatra noted how family relations are, “central to what makes us ill and what makes us healthy, what brings on sadness and what brings joy, what makes us hurt and what helps us heal.” Science has also proven again and again that such connections can even extend our lives. In one study conducted by the University of South Carolina among a group of adults who were either married, living with a partner or single found, after adjusting for lifestyle factors, that those who were single had shorter proteins at the end of their chromosomes. These chromosomes, called telomeres, are associated with a shorter life expectancy.
10 VOICE | NOVEMBER 22, 2018 | theievoice.com
In addition, science has also affirmed that not having such relationships can literally injure the heart. According to Sinatra, these injuries are not limited to anger and the loss of love. A lack of relationships with family and friends, as well as emotional isolation, contribute as much to heart disease as does smoking, diet, inactivity, and other risk factors. In one scientific assessment, researchers at San Diego State University studied the carotid, coronary artery health, and cardiovascular risk factors among approximately 400 women. They used ultrasound and another form of electron beam technology to compare their status at the beginning and end of an 11 to 14-year period. The results showed women in happy

relationships had less atherosclerosis and showed slower progression of carotid artery disease, compared to those whose relationships were less satisfying. Women not in intimate relationships were found to have intermediate levels of artery degeneration. Researchers who conducted the study concluded that high quality intimate relationships can protect against cardiovascular disease in women, similar effects on men were already confirmed in previous years. This information has important implications because heart disease remains the leading cause of death among women. Although individuals often joke about the ups and downs of holiday family gatherings and frequently shake their heads about the sometimes-challenging efforts it takes to maintain harmony with family and/or friends, most also agree they might suffer emotionally without these relationships. In 2015, researchers at a Dallas-based institute asked two interesting questions regarding relationships. Firstly, does the source of social support from partners, relatives or friends, matter regarding health and longevity? And, secondly, does the frequency of contact make a difference? To find answers to these questions, the researchers analyzed the results of a 1990 survey on social support. The survey participants included 12,709 men and women from age 18 to 90 years. Researchers also tracked the participants from 1990 through December 31, 2003, or until death. A statistical analysis of the data revealed that receiving social support from relatives reduced mortality risk by 19 percent as did the support of
a partner or spouse. Proving again the important impact relatives have on one’s quality of life. This was not all the statistical analysis revealed. According to the researchers, “The study also found that if people had social contact with six or seven friends on a weekly basis, they reduced their chances of dying early by 24 percent.” There are other studies that show people who spend time with family and friends are more successful in finding ways to cope with stress largely because they can talk through problems instead of pursuing negative coping mechanisms, like drugs, alcohol, etc. Additional studies have found that such relationships help improve one’s psychological well-being. This is largely because emotional support provided through social connections provide a greater sense of meaning in life and gives one a stronger sense of purpose. One’s connections to family and friends are the keys to lasting health, happiness and longevity. In addition, these relationships take on added importance as people age. Educator Amritakana Das described social relationships this way, “They are like oxygen when we want to reach the summit of any mountain.” Some people create their own family units as they navigate their way through life. Others cling closely to their families of birth expanding it with friends as they navigate through the years. This Thanksgiving, whoever you count among your circle of family and friends, celebrate those connections for all the reasons you already love them as well as for the benefits of health and longevity you gift one another.
