In many ways we have survived the worst of times in recent years, a pandemic that took the lives of more than one million Americans, a dangerous insurrection that almost stole the life blood of a nation, and most recently, American voters rebuked nationalism at the polls though not in great enough numbers to prevent the country from falling into another two year cycle of national gridlock as the Republicans prepare to take over the House and launch a constant series of investigations rooted in political theater. So in essence, nothing new on that front.

Despite the national political circus that is certain to come, this Thanksgiving season I remain encouraged by the adage that reminds us “that all politics are local” and what matters most politically is what occurs right here in our own communities. And although we are certainly impacted by what happens nationally, we can use our efforts to create the change we wish to see right here in our own backyards. That is where the giving part of this comes in.
Many of those working in these organizations are our friends and neighbors, people passionately committed for making a difference in our communities. Yet, as much as is being done there is still much to be done.
Those of us would like to do more to support community efforts we feel passionate about will have an opportunity on Tuesday, November 29, 2022 to help make a difference.
This year like every year on Giving Tuesday we are once again provided an opportunity to help reimagine our communities. Each of us has something to contribute to making a difference whether its a little of your time, a donation or raising your voice in support of a cause.
There are non profit organizations working on every issue imaginable across this region from health and health care, to supporting those who are system impacted and closing the school to prison pipeline, to issues related to environmental justice, the push for affordable housing, job training, opportunities and other economic issues, preparing our youth to pursue a higher education, fighting hate or supporting

When Qianteh Looney-Baldridge’s 10-yearold son Bryan David Baldridge told her they needed to protest the construction of a new suspension bridge on McKinley Street in Corona, CA, she was surprised.
Looney-Baldridge was ordering food from a local fast food restaurant when she and her son realized there was a lot of construction taking place nearby. An employee at the restaurant explained that some of the businesses nearby would be impacted by the project.
Construction for the McKinley Street Grade Separation Project began this past summer with a goal of reducing traffic congestion, improving the safety for motorcyclists and pedestrians at the crossing and minimizing the impacts to the community and the BNSF railroad. According to the project plan, construction extends from the 91 Freeway interchange on the north side to Magnolia Avenue on the south side. The bridge is expected to be completed by the winter of 2023/2024.
The project has been a priority for the city for 15 years. After several years of evaluating the feasibility of the bridge, examining overpass and underpass options and assessing overcrossing alternatives, the city of Corona established an Ad-Hoc Committee in 2019. The committee included Caltrans, Riverside County, Riverside County Transportation Commission (RCTC) and Transportation Corridor Agency personnel who developed recommendations to minimize costs and impacts to the surrounding business and property owners.
According to an August 2019 Ad-Hoc Committee Update on the McKinley Street Grade Separation, the committee identified 14 business impacts and loss of visibility if the bridge contained six lanes as initially proposed. Committee members recommended an alternative four-lane bridge that would be more cost effective, preserve 14 businesses and improve visibility.

Former President Ronald Regan created National Adoption Week in 1984 to bring awareness to adoption agencies and increase the number of adoptions across America. In 1995, former President Bill Clinton started National Adoption month.
Currently, there are over 600,000 kids in the foster care system in the United States. In California, that number is around 60,000, according to the Children’s Law Center of California.
Eighty two children were adopted at this year’s event held November 5, the second-highest number of adoptions in recent years. Six volunteer
judges oversaw the adoptions at the courthouses in Riverside and Indio, and three other judges volunteered at the Larson Justice Center in Indio to facilitate adoptions at that location.
“This is what people need to see. This is unity. Today, let's all celebrate something that is really good. And all the different homes that we've created,” said Riverside County Board of Supervisors member Jeff Hewitt. “Each year, hopefully, we can take care of more and more, whether they're babies all the way up to 18-year-olds.”
City of Riverside Mayor Patricia Dawson attended the event and gave an emotional speech at the adoption ceremony, praising the parents and kids.

Reeves | Staff.S. Representative Karen Bass will assume office next month after defeating billionaire business developer Rick Caruso to become the next mayor of Los Angeles, according to the Associated Press who called the race on Wednesday.

Bass’ win as the first female mayor of Los Angeles and the city’s second Black mayor comes a week after the Midterm Election on Nov. 8, 2022. More than 70% of the ballots have been counted with Bass leading by more than 46,000 votes.
“This is my home, and with my whole heart, I’m ready to serve, and my pledge to you is that we will hit the ground running on Day One,” Bass said in a statement. “I ran for mayor to
urgently confront the crises our hometown faces. Tonight, 40,000 Angelenos will sleep without a home — and five will not wake up. Crime is increasing and families are being priced out of their neighborhoods. This must change.”
While Caruso initially held the lead over Bass with 12,000 votes and spent more than $100 million on his campaign, he conceded to her victory with a phone call to her office on Wednesday.
“While we came up short in the count, we made an indelible impact on this city and its people that will last far beyond the campaign trail or Election Day,” Caruso said in a statement. “There will be more to come from the movement we created.”
Prior to 2012, real estate developer Caruso was registered as Republican and then reported no party preference for 10 years until he announced his bid for mayor. Just before he announced, Caruso re-registered as a Democrat.
Bass, who was endorsed by both President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, has served in Congress since 2011. A registered Democrat since 2005, she was also on the president’s shortlist of candidates for vice president prior to her run for mayor.

National Adoption Day is celebrated annually on Nov.19, and events are held in 400 cities across the country where children are legally connected to their “forever family.” Since 2000, 75,000 kids have been placed on National Adoption Day.
The Heart Gallery is one way to bring awareness and distribute photos of children in foster homes across the country. It was created by a group of volunteers in New Mexico in 2001 to bring awareness to children in foster care systems.
Ida Roath, an adoption supervisor at the Riverside County Department of Social Services, is in charge of the county’s program. Roath has been a part of adoption services in Riverside for around 20 years.
“What we do is we get professional photographers to donate their time. And they come in, take pictures of the kids and try to basically capture their personality,” she said. “Then we put together collages, which you'll see on our Heart Gallery table, just for people to come and look. It's a traveling portrait exhibit. So we can take it across the county and raise awareness that we need more adoptive homes.”
The department holds other events throughout the year, like the “matching picnics,” where fully approved adoptive parents and children in foster care meet in the park. It also plans activities where potential parents and kids interact.
Roath said the number of adoptions in Riverside County steadily increased over the last 20 years until the onset of the COVID-19
pandemic. The highest number of adoptions in one year was around 700.
Events like National Adoption Day and programs like the Heart Gallery are great ways to spread the word and distribute information on the thousands of kids of all ages in the foster care system across the country who are looking for their forever homes.
“This is just the start. I know it took a long time to get here. But really, it's the Forever Family you're building, and the child's lives are changing forever,” said Riverside City Councilmember Ronaldo Fierro.

Photographer Benoit Malphettes places audience engagement front and center at his most recent exhibition, “Open to Interpretation.” In his exhibition, currently mounted at the San Bernardino County Museum, Malphettes invites viewers to turn inwards and call on their own experiences and imaginings to form their individual interpretation of his art, some of which is dedicated to victims of the opioid epidemic, child abuse, and human trafficking. Malphettes not only fosters the space for the individual viewer’s perception to be considered but also for it to be shared via the interactive exhibition experience.
Malphettes is a contributor to Black Voice News as well as an avid supporter of our work. Black Voice News was able to spend time with him at the exhibition and in his home studio to learn more about the process of creating the images for “Open To Your Interpretation.”
After retiring and moving to the Inland Empire over a decade ago, Malphettes designed a photography studio in his Riverside home. For the former fashion photographer, retirement marked the beginning of a transformative period of unrestrained and conceptual creativity, including the fulfillment of his “childhood dream of taking pictures without restraint.” This eventually led Malphettes to create the photographs featured in “Open To Interpretation.” The exhibition premiered at the San Bernardino County Museum on August 25 and will remain on display until January 8, 2023.

“I sit in front of an empty backdrop and let my mind go without my guidance, giving it as much space as it wants. Then I compose and photograph as a spectator of my unconscious, fully aware of keeping at bay the vigilance of reason, at least at this stage,” reads Malphettes’ artist statement, referring to his process of creating the images.
In this series, Malphettes used still-life photography, a longstanding artistic genre and style of photography which encompasses any inanimate object– man made or natural–that does not move, to document artifacts he has collected over the years. “Odd objects, fragments, old documents, anything, until the moment I no longer look at them for what they are but, instead, I follow them within the world they invite me in,” he writes.
Malphettes worked with his wife, Kathy Malphettes, an award winning creative director, recognized for her innovative creativity during the “golden age of fashion stores,” and his long-standing collaborator to procure and construct the objects that became the subjects of his photographs. Many of these objects are on display at the exhibition.
Malphettes says many of the photographs are autobiographical, reflecting his Jesuit education and familiarity with French Art. He says that he often tries to make sense of “strange and disparate concoctions” but is left with more questions than answers.
The entirety of the exhibition is focused on audience engagement and of course interpretation. Each piece has an accompanying QR code beside it to allow audiences to use their phones to give feedback on how the piece resonates with them.

State and local health officials have issued health advisories as cases of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and other illnesses increase this winter. Higher levels of RSV cases have been reported this fall, though this virus is a common infection among children.
RSV is a respiratory virus that usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Most people recover within two weeks, but in some instances RSV can be serious, especially for infants and older adults. RSV is the most common cause of bronchiolitis (inflammation of the small airways in the lung) and pneumonia (infection of the lungs).
With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, flu season and increased RSV cases, public health officials warn the public to protect themselves against these respiratory illnesses by continuing to wear masks and staying home if symptomatic.
The San Bernardino County Department of Public Health (SBCDPH) issued a health advisory early this month after reporting an increase in pediatric hospitalizations and daily emergency room visits for respiratory infections.
“San Bernardino County is seeing high rates of respiratory illness severely impacting capacity in our pediatric hospitals with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) being a contributing factor,” said County Health Officer Dr. Michael Sequeira in a statement. “Respiratory illnesses can severely affect young infants and children, and we are encouraging residents to take precautions.”
SBCDPH media specialist Michelle Caldera explained in an email that RSV is not part of the Title 17 Reportable Diseases and Conditions and therefore is not formally tracked unless there is a death in a case with a child under five years old.

In 2021, the county reported that six per cent of emergency department visits were related to influenza-like illness symptoms compared to 2020, where 8% of visits were due to influenzalike illness symptoms.
Riverside County Public Health officials are also encouraging residents to take precautions to protect their children as RSV cases among children rise.
“It’s that time of year and we are seeing children in Riverside County, some younger than two years old, who are sick with colds and coughs and some with RSV. While RSV is a common respiratory virus, it can make young children quite ill. So, we are asking that parents do what they can to prevent kids from getting sick,” said Riverside County Public Health Officer Geoffrey Leung in a statement.
RSV cases or hospitalizations are not required to be reported to health departments in California unless there are deaths. There
have been no reported RSV deaths in Riverside County.
“This is likely in part because RSV is very common, and in most children and adults leads to minor, cold-like symptoms or for some younger children, brief hospitalizations for supportive care. Virtually all children get an RSV infection by the time they are two years old,” said Jose Arballo Jr., Senior Public Information Specialist, Riverside University Health SystemPublic Health, via email.
Riverside County does track influenza-like illnesses, which would also note diseases related to RSV. According to the most recent surveillance report for the county, there has been moderate to high influenza-like illness activity levels in Riverside County. The report noted an increase in emergency department visits from 4.3% to 7% during the week of Oct. 23, 2022 through Oct. 29, 2022.

“I was surprised because naturally he’s an introvert,” Looney-Baldridge explained. She asked her son if he wanted to recite his speech again in front of Corona council members. “He said yes and he did a wonderful job. I'm really proud of him.”
Baldridge met with Corona mayor Wes Speake and city council member Jacque Casillas, who are both members of the McKinley Street Grade Separation Advisory Council Committee.
During the weekly city council meeting on Nov. 2, Baldridge led the room in the Pledge of Allegiance. Afterwards, he was awarded a certificate for expressing concern for the community by mayor Wes Speake.
“Bryan and his mom came to council offices last week and met with city council member Casillas and I. He had heard about the McKinley Grade Separation and had some concerns and questions about the businesses there and how we were going to work with them,” Speake said during the council meeting. “He sat down with us and listened to our side. I think we gave him some things to think about and work on, and he was very pleased to meet with both of us.”
