n Monday inland residents across the region will celebrate Christmas Eve—following old traditions and in many instances, creating new ones. For some that will include the hustle and bustle of last-minute shopping, gift wrapping, prepping for Christmas dinner or gathering with family and/or friends. Still others will choose to spend a quiet evening at home relaxing after days of hectic shopping, shipping and mailing. Unfortunately, there are certain to be moments of panic when an individual realizes they accidently overlooked a special someone who was supposed to be on their shopping list and guilt will push them out the door and back into the madness of last-minute shopping—hoping against hope they will be able to find just the right gift. Parents of young children may spend Christmas Eve wrapping presents, especially toys, and some will find themselves spending far too much time staring at those promised, “easy to follow” instructions, as they struggle to piece together those special toy selections that were purchased unassembled. Santa’s little elves provide very little assistance in this regard but when it comes to directing parents where to purchase all those toys on their children’s wish lists, it’s a well-known secret the elves themselves need help—so, they rely on American toy makers to produce all of those highly prized and much hoped-for surprises. This year, there are 557 companies across the country producing games, toys and dolls to help meet the Christmas demand including wholesale/manufacturers right here in the inland region. Toy businesses employ approximately 6,300 workers nationally and according to the Census Bureau, nearly $67 billion worth of toy goods were bought online or by mail order last December—nearly doubling the total for 2010. Also, on Christmas Eve parents and grandparents who enjoy building added excitement for their children/grandchildren in anticipation of Christmas morning, can help them track Santa as he makes his way across the night sky. You can do so by logging on to Google’s Santa Tracker at santatracker.google.com/village.html and/or NORAD’s Santa Tracker at www.noradsanta. org/#section-space. Both sights not only track Santa’s travels, they also include Christmas songs and other activities for the little ones. This Christmas Eve whether you are roasting chestnuts by an open fire, sipping homemade eggnog, enjoying family and friends, or dashing about for those last-minute gifts, the team at the IE Voice/Black Voice News wishes you and yours a Very Merry Christmas!

Congressional Representatives Raise Their Voices on Behalf of Amtrak Call Center Employees Riverside

R

ecently, the IE /Black Voice News reported on the scheduled closure of the Amtrak call center in Riverside along with the proposed sale of the building that houses it. The closure will displace approximately 500 workers. The unexpected November 14 email announcement to employees advised them the call center’s last date of operation will be January 18, 2019. Amtrak’s Mission Grove facility in Riverside is one of two national call centers operated by the transportation giant. The company has claimed it will now handle calls at its remaining call center in Philadelphia—the Riverside employees are being offered an opportunity to retain their call center jobs if they choose to relocate to Philadelphia. A CBS report noted Amtrak call center employees in Riverside and their representatives, Transportation Communications Union (TCU), have accused Amtrak of consolidating its call centers, while at the same time, the company has purportedly outsourced some call center work to a non-union shop in Florida. Now, at least 39 members of California’s congressional delegation have sent a letter to Amtrak officials which strongly rebuked what they defined as Amtrak’s “union-busting” plan to close its Riverside call center and send work to a third-party provider in Florida. The letter highlighted how Amtrak differs from any other corporation because the federal government owns most of it and it receives billions of dollars in taxpayer subsidies. The legislators’ letter stated in part, “And though we agree with Congress’ mandate that Amtrak should and must endeavor to deliver services more efficiently, that does not give Amtrak license to engage in union-busting and unionavoidance maneuvers to lower costs on the backs of working men and women.” The letter further criticized the company for its plans to outsource some of its customerservice work to a contractor that pays far less than what employees at the Riverside call center are paid.

When the call center’s closure was announced last month, Amtrak claimed it was in part being driven by a reduction in the center’s call volume, yet reports allege the company has already required the telecommunications company, Teleperformance, to hire 150 employees to handle heavy volume periods at a call center in

Port St. Lucie, Florida. Teleperformance purportedly pays call center employees at maximum, $12.50 per hour without benefits, compared to employees at the Amtrak Riverside call center who start at $15 per hour and can earn as much as $28 per hour continued on page 18

San Manuel Band of Mission Indians Spreads Holiday Joy

San Bernardino

O

n December 5, the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians concluded their Annual Toy Drive having collected more than 3,000 new, unwrapped toys to donate across San Bernardino County. For the second year in a row, the organization has now gifted toys to Inland Empire families and organizations, including: $25,000 to ABC 7’s “Spark of Love Toy Drive,” to help them continue their part in supporting families and children in need. Additionally, on December 7, San Manuel gifted more than 1,000 toys to the California Highway Patrol’s annual “CHiPs for Kids” toy drive. This year San Manuel also continued its partnership with the San Bernardino City

Unified School District to identify families in need. Those families were invited to “Santa’s Pick A Toy Party” hosted at San Manuel Village on December 7. Parents were able to choose the perfect gift for their children from a selection of over 1,000 toys and San Manuel team members were available to help parents wrap their gifts. While parents shopped, fun activities were provided for kids, like a photo op with Santa, arts and crafts, and a cookie decorating station. Commenting on the drive’s success, Chairwoman of the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, Lynn Valbuena said, “We feel honored to have once again brought joy to local families during the holiday season with our annual Toy continued on page 18

Skip the Toys: Give Kids the Gift of Reading

A

re you still trying to find a good Christmas gift for your little one? Skip the toy section and head for the children’s books. There you’ll find a world of relevance, wonder, imagination fantasy and fiction. This time of year book stores are chocked full of the hottest bestselling titles. As a kid, growing up, there weren’t many Black characters in the books I coveted so much. From Charlie & the Chocolate Factory to Alice in Wonderland, it was hard to find a face that looked like my own in these classic children’s tales. However, kids today have a much larger selection of children’s books to choose from with brown characters of all shades for them to identify with — and most of them have been written by Black authors, too. Did you know that African-American inventors are responsible for the modern day supermarket and cell phone mikes? Or that a 9-year-old was arrested at a Civil Rights protest in 1963? There are hundreds of books that will teach children the rich history of African Americans and enlighten, encourage and inspire your kids. Whether it’s learning about adoption, how to handle bullies or a little girl’s magic puffballs, there’s definitely a book for

the kid in your life. And the talented writers behind these tales are nothing short of impressive, too, from the famous feminist bell hooks to Taye Diggs to Pharrell Williams. Most publishers have African American, Latino, girl, or boy children’s book lists. Although useful, these cultural and gender-themed book lists are often inadequate, restrictive, and in many ways stereotypical. They are especially problematic for young Black boys, many of whom are reluctant readers. Children’s books depicting people of color often avoid the imagination and creativity of fantasy and fiction – the genres young boys love most. Black historical figures are important, but Black children should be able to find aspects of their culture and ethnic heritage outside of stereotypical nonfiction children’s books about history. There are amazing children’s books that all kids love. It is important for children to learn about their history, but representations of non-white characters should be more diverse and not sacrifice the cultivation of wonderment that characterizes great children’s books or neglect the mission of children’s literature, which I believe is to help children better understand themselves and the world around them.

Riverside County’s Last, Best and Final Offer to SEIU Riverside County

L

ast Wednesday following nearly two years of negotiations, Riverside County Board of Supervisors Chairman Chuck Washington issued a press statement declaring the county had issued its “last, best and final” offer to the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), imposing a final contract offer on 7,000 service workers in Riverside County. The two year-negotiation process described by Washington, included no less than 39 meetings and multiple failed attempts to reach an agreement through compromise. Washington defined the county’s decision to impose the memorandum as the responsible approach to stewardship of taxpayer dollars by protecting the county from a potential $35 million cost overrun. “I have to do what is in the best interest of our 2.5 million residents, and I take that responsibility seriously,” he stated adding, “Failing to rein in this excessive spending would have been reckless and irresponsible.” Washington further explained that the county’s fiscal outlook is bleak, “It maintains a structural deficit and declining reserves, and the State of California continues to impose substantially increasing financial obligations on all counties.” Regarding the unsuccessful SEIU union negotiations Washington declared, “SEIU’s demands were, unfortunately, impossible to fulfill. Members of SEIU have seen an average 49 percent increase in compensation over the past five years. On average, the compensation of SEIU members is 18 percent above market at top step when compared to the five surrounding counties—these kinds of increases are simply unsustainable.” According to Washington, under the county’s memorandum, employees will receive 2.71 percent pay increases every year, which he claimed is much more manageable than the kinds of pay hikes the union demanded. He further asserted that although it is less than the SEIU sought, it is still an increase from employees’ current rate of pay. SEIU Local 721 President Bob Schoonover

SEIU Local 721 President Bob Schoonover

Riverside County Board of Supervisors Chairman Chuck Washington

did not react favorably to Riverside County’s forced memorandum. On Tuesday, December 11, he stated, “The Riverside County Board of Supervisors’ decision to impose its insulting “last, best and final” offer on the hardworking public servants of Riverside County is deeply disappointing, but not surprising. It’s par for the course for a board that has spent nearly two years attempting to grind down county workers and county services—no matter how much it hurts our community or how much it costs taxpayers.” When parties involved in labor negotiations reach an impasse as was the case between Riverside County and SEIU, management can impose what is called a “last best and final” offer in lieu of a new collective bargaining agreement. Earlier this year, a lawsuit to block the county’s efforts in this regard resulted in an injunction by the Riverside County Superior Court. However, that injunction was voided by the California Fourth District Court of Appeal on November 2. “Make no mistake,” Schoonover continued, “despite the confounding court decision that allowed this imposition to proceed, the systemic

issues in Riverside County haven’t gone away. The county is still facing critical staffing shortages and safety issues in our hospitals and more than two dozen unfair labor practice charges that remain to be ruled on.” According to Schoonover, the county’s action is going to hurt Riverside County. “In the short term, it’s going to affect everyone that receives county services and the people who provide them. In the long term, it has the potential to embroil the county even deeper into a long and costly legal fight.” “This board of supervisors, two of whom won’t even be sitting in the chamber come January, is making a massive gamble at the expense of Riverside County taxpayers. They can impose all they want, but we will still have our day in court. When the court rules on the outstanding unfair labor practice charges, it could easily invalidate this entire imposition, forcing the County to go back and make every worker affected financially whole—with interest,” Schoonover concluded. It is important to note the county’s unilateral imposition of provisions defined in continued on page 18

Cellar Door Bookstore Hosts 3rd Drag Queen Storytime Andrea M. Baldrias Contributor

O

n October 27th, Riverside’s Cellar Door Bookstore held its second Drag Queen Story Hour. After the first successful story hour in June during LGBTQ+ Pride Month, owner, Linda ShermanNurick, thought it best to hold another during Halloween. However, this time was different. For the second Story Hour, Cellar Door Bookstore linked their event to the Drag Queens’ official Facebook Page which meant that there was public access to the event. After posting on Facebook, Cellar Door received backlash on their page to this event. “We knew that there were some issues. Some people --most of whom had never been to our store-- said they were never going to come. We didn’t know what was going to happen. That morning we opened the doors, there was no protest and I kind of thought there might be. I was like, “Alright, well that’s good.” Linda recalled. The second Drag Queen Story Hour was the largest turnout yet, with about 40-50 kids and their parents in attendance. Families came from as far as San Diego to check out this event. While the Queens read, and the children listened intently, Linda said she saw a woman peering over the crowd in the back of the store. “She was filming, and I had seen her because she had walked in front of the

Board Sidesteps Alleged Brown Act Violations and Appoints Dawn Rowe to Represent 3rd District S.E. Williams Contributor

O

n Tuesday, December 18, the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisor appointed Dawn Rowe, a Republican field representative for U.S. Congressman Paul Cook (8th Congressional District), to represent the county’s Third

District. Rowe now fills the vacancy left by former Supervisor James Ramos (Democrat) who was elected to the California State Assembly in November. While many are celebrating the Board’s new female majority—the first in its history, others point to the Republican party’s now enhanced control over a county where Democrats hold a clear majority. According to the December 16, 2018, Weekly Report of [Voter] Registration published by the San Bernardino County Registrar of Voters, 38.3 percent of registered voters in San Bernardino County are registered Democrats while only 29.1 percent are registered Republicans. Although the county charter defines the supervisorial role as nonpartisan, and existing board members unanimously supported Rowe’s appointment, critics are not sold on the idea of appointing a Republican to a position vacated by a Democrat in a county where Democrats hold a clear

majority particularly when, by the supervisors’ own admission, no less than 43 candidates were qualified and met all the Board’s requirements for consideration. The replacement selection process came under suspicion and was temporarily stymied on December 11, when Needles resident Ruth MusserLopéz, sent an email to the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors (Board) accusing it of having violated the Ralph M. Brown Act. The foundation for the former Needles City Council member’s concern was initially laid on November 13 and December 4, when the Board approved and then modified an application and selection process to fill the vacant Third District seat on the Board. Musser-Lopéz’s email was triggered when the Board subsequently implemented the process steps approved and then modified on November 13 and December 4. Those actions occurred on December 10, when Board members agreed to an interview list of thirteen candidates gleaned from the 43 qualified candidates who applied; and again, on December 11, when the Board narrowed the 13 semi-finalists to a list of five finalists.

The Inland Empire Remembers So Voice Staff

S

ongstylist Nancy Wilson Burton has died and the Inland Empire remembers their famous resident with love and thanks for her special contributions. Wilson, a resident of San Bernardino County for the past several years, was frequently involved in the community from working with the San Gorgonio Girl Scout Council to attending a community celebrations and faith-based events. She was frequently called on to sing, emcee programs, give speeches at birthday parties, and lend her name to organizations she is passionate about supporting. Local girl scout troops were given permission to camp on her Pioneertown ranch, and she even raised funds for the scouts along with First Lady Betty Ford. Most of the things she was involved in never made the news, she just did good in the community she called home. “She was the epitome of warmth,” said actor Hal Williams, of the television show 227. “She played my wife on the Sinbad Show and was a regular down to earth person,” he said. Williams and Wilson went to neighboring high schools in Columbus, Ohio and had known each other most of their lives. “Nancy is the personification of a lady and she never forgot who she was. She was the kind of friend that if you did see each other for a while she’d just pick right back up and not skip a beat. She was never phony,” he said. His comments were echoed by others. Don Griggs, longtime Rialto resident and businessman said, “One of my life’s thrills was meeting her. I found out that she was not only a great singer, she was a great person.” He said that in Iowa he grew up on Nancy’s music and never imagined he would ever meet her. He ended up

meeting her several times in the Inland Empire. “She was kind and an entertainer beyond words. She was at home in our community. She seemed to be like the person who lived next door,” he said. Former San Bernardino NAACP President Walter Jarman said that she was spiritual, “I’ve always loved her music, she sings from her spirit. She had a natural God given talent.” Nancy never had singing lessons. “The greatest experience I had in meeting her was I had just dropped by Hardy and Cheryl Brown’s house and they said she was on her way, just stopping by on her way home. I got a chance to get a wonderful photo and have a one-on-one conversation with her. Then at another time she attended an event I got a chance to go to dinner with her and her husband the Rev. Wiley Burton.” That event was a fundraiser for newly displaced Hurricane Katrina refugees. “Wiley and Nancy called me because they were so upset as were many of us and we came up with the idea with the help of McKay’s Funeral Home in Fontana of having Nancy come and be on program to sing and pray for the families of victims of that terrible tragedy, Cheryl Brown reflected. “Nancy and Wiley came and the sadness so many felt was eased because we had purpose.” Mark and Robin McKay were especially impressed that she would come to their small mortuary. “We will forever be grateful to have had such a selfless woman in our lives,” said the McKays. “In 2005, she entrusted our young mortuary to hold her benefit event for the Hurricane Katrina victims, She was truly a citizen of the world. We will miss her genuine generosity and abundant lovingness for her community,” they said.

Many people attended the benefit, among them was Bishop Emory James, Pastor of Ephesians New Testament Church in Fontana. “Her coming to Fontana at such a critical time, that move, made Katrina real, people could identify…this service brought it home to the local community, and made it real especially to family members living in the area. It gave us and opportunity to connect with relatives in New Orleans, for us to identify with the catastrophe. It was in her spirit to do.” James said that he was sad the Inland area didn’t get a chance to show her how grateful they were. Bill Cobbs, an actor who also lives in the Inland Empire, said that he had known and loved her music for many years, He is a lover of jazz and especially her music. “As high as she reached in her musical career she never lost her sense of community,” he said. Cobbs said he knew and loved her music, attended her concerts, but did not meet her until he came to and event she attended in Riverside. “It was an amazing thing, she made meeting her, a real person.” He dedicated an event he was hosting at his home on Sunday to Nancy, playing her music for his guests. Bruce Hall of Loma Linda said he attended his first concert at the Coconut Grove where Nancy was featured with Cannonball Adderley, “I was able to close the circle when I met her at Sierra Lakes. I introduced myself and told her how much of a fan I am, she was so kind and warm in my conversation. I will always remember that conversation. The world will miss her.” Hall joined Lois Carson of Rialto, who met her at an event in Los Angeles for Dorothy Height, President of National Council of Negro Women (NCNW). “She was from Ohio, near Wilberforce where I went to college. She was the entertainment for the event and she brought the house down,” said Carson. Nancy attended Central State College in Ohio. Carson is a founder of the Inland Empire NCNW.

Napoleon Brandford Remembers Nancy Wilson

Chris and Ernie Levister Remember Nancy Wilson

Napoleon Brandford, chairman emeritus of bond underwriting firm Siebert, Brandford, Shank, loves Nancy Wilson’s music. “Nancy is my favorite singer of all time and having an opportunity to introduce her in Riverside was the greatest privilege in my life. I warned her it would be the most unique introduction she ever received, later she agreed. I used her songs as the answer to help me through relationships I was dealing with. For my high school girlfriend I was leaving, I used “Face It Girl Its Over”. When I was going to be engaged at the University of Athens, I used “Don’t Misunderstand.” On my 25th Anniversary, I used “The Other Side of the Storm”. She ended with what every man in this room is afraid to hear “Guess Who I Saw Today”. Brandford said when he learned of her death, he’d been playing her music all day. He ended with “Lady with a Song”, she was a lady with a song and sang of how she wanted to be remembered.

I remember meeting Nancy Wilson in 1995 while nervously pacing the admission gate hours before the opening note of the historic Blue Jay Jazz Festival held every summer in the San Bernardino Mountains. The atmosphere was surreal, part panic, part glorious, part blur, when out of no where, beautiful, graceful and smiling there she was accompanied by a longtime Blue Jay Jazz Festival supporter. “Just following the music” Nancy said. I gathered my composure with a gushing welcome, punctuated with just about anything I could cram into a 60 second elevator speech on the storied music festival and charitable organization I and a few jazz musicians and local old timers had established years before. Training her gaze on the swinging big band rehearsing just feet away, Nancy whispered “keep the music playing. It’s all about freedom, heaven rejoicing, transcending walls,” she said. In her unique style, she let her head bob to the urgent, thrum of the distant trombone. She snapped her fingers, paused and quietly disappeared into the crowded parking lot. Following our introduction to Nancy Wilson, our foundation made several unsuccessful attempts to book her performance at our annual Blue Jay Jazz Festival. Years later Ernie and I saw Nancy, jazz icons Gerald Wilson and Bobby Rodriguez perform at UCLA during a star studded birthday bash for jazz great and longtime Blue Jay Jazz sponsor, Kenny Burrell. Kenny headlined at our festival in 1997. I currently serve as president of the Blue Jay Jazz Foundation, (BJJF) (an all volunteer nonprofit jazz entertainment and music education organization) The foundation hosts the annual Blue Jay Jazz Festival held at SkyPark in the San Bernardino Mountains. Ernie is a longtime member of the BJJF Board of Trustees.

ongstylist Nancy Wilson Mayor Acquanetta Warren was saddened to hear of Nancy’s death. “I had met her at Hardy Brown’s birthday party a few years ago, but I was excited that she came to my city, Fontana for Cheryl Brown’s fundraiser. I grew up listening to her great voice on records. When she came I talked with her, she was proud I had gotten elected mayor of the city of Fontana. I walked on a cloud that night because she was so beautiful and talented always expressing love for others,” she said.

The Brown Act, California’s open meeting law, “is foundational to the democratic process . . . the act “provides the governed with a place at the table” when important decisions are made. As the introduction to the act states, “The people insist on remaining informed so that they may retain control over the instruments they have created.” - Joan Cassman The Board made those decisions behind closed doors, in secret and away from public view. The process as implemented allegedly violated the opening meeting requirements outlined in the Ralph M. Brown Act which mandates that most meetings of public bodies be held in public. Musser-Lopez summed this up in her email that in part, accused the Board of casting, “preliminary votes secretly, without a process agreed upon by the public and without publicly disclosing the votes of the individual supervisors to the public.” This is exactly what the Board did. According to the California State Association of Counties (CSAC), “. . . the Board must follow the procedural requirements in the [local, state, federal] statutes or its actions will not be valid.” The CSAC guidelines further state, “An official act of the Board of Supervisors can only be performed in a regularly or specially convened meeting. The individual members have no power to act for the county merely because they are members of the Board of Supervisors. Meetings of the Board of Supervisors are subject to the restrictions of the Ralph M. Brown Act. With limited exceptions, the Brown Act requires that all Board of Supervisors meetings be open and public.” The San Bernardino County Charter is very clear that a vacancy in the office of Supervisor will be filled by appointment by a majority vote of the remaining members of the Board of Supervisors from qualified electors of the Supervisorial District in which such vacancy exists. It also states that the position be filled by the Board within 30 days of the vacancy or the governor will appoint someone to fill the vacancy. Although the county’s charter is silent as to any process to fill the vacancy, the open meeting mandates of the Brown Act must always (with limited exception) be followed. Yet, as noted above, the Board’s process including actions to whittle down the list of candidates on two

occasions, deviate from the Brown Act open meeting requirements. According to county officials, 48 “qualified candidates” initially applied for the open position. The 48 applicants were asked by the Board to submit supplemental materials consisting of responses to questions and any additional supporting materials—43 of them submitted information by the deadline on December 7, 2018. Board supervisors had planned to have a public discussion regarding its pre-determined list of the five finalists (their picks from the list of 43) last Thursday, December 13 but postponed the action after the Board received the MusserLopez email. The supervisors wanted to allow

time for county counsel to examine the Board’s actions and determine whether the MusserLopez accusation had merit. During an interview with the IE Voice/ Black Voice News, San Bernardino County spokesperson David Wert was asked how the county allowed such a misstep in the process to occur? “First of all,” he declared, “the county has not determined that a misstep occurred. An allegation has been made, and the board is taking the allegation seriously, so much so that they postponed further action on the appointment for five days in light of a looming deadline.” Wert went on to note that the county code is silent on vacancies and although the Charter states a vacancy shall be filled by appointment by the Board of Supervisors within 30 days, and after 30 days by the governor, it fails to define a process. After consulting with legal on the merits of Musser-Lopéz concerns, the county determined it would rescind its previous actions and conduct its candidate deliberations in an open session on Tuesday, December 18, before selecting a replacement to fill the seat vacated by Ramos. Detailed in the background document associated with item 102 (Selection of Third District Supervisor) of the Board’s December 18 meeting agenda which posted online around 5 p.m. Friday, December 14, was the official rationale for the Board’s change in process related to the vacancy. Rather than addressing the alleged Brown Act violation it reads, “Because of the limited time in which the Board of Supervisors may exercise its right to make an appointment to fill the Third District Supervisorial vacancy, a legal defense of the open and transparent process is not practical. Contesting the allegations may result in a forfeiture to the governor of the Board’s right to make the selection.” In making its final decision, the Board further agreed to rely on the 43 applications continued on page 18

I thought, “There they are.” Sherman-Nurick had asked the woman to stop filming because she was filming children without their parent’s consent. The woman maintained that it was within her right because this was a public event. It was later discovered that the woman was affiliated with a Los Angeles based anti-LGBT hate group named Mass Resistance, as recognized by the Southern Poverty Law Center. Linda called security, and eventually the police, to mediate the situation. The support from the Inland Empire community was remarkable. “The people in the I.E. are saying, you know what? He put $100 on the counter. I had not seen him before… He said, I want to buy books for a kid who needs to hear that whoever [they] are is okay. I got a few books, and we are going to send them to the Trevor Project [a non-profit organization that focuses on suicide prevention for LGBTQ+ youth]. The woman who was with him said, “I want you to know that he hasn’t left the house for three months. He’s really sick. He’s dying. and buying books to support you.” Despite the incident, Cellar Door Bookstore hosted their third Drag Queen Story Hour on Saturday December 15th. Aside from two stragglers grumbling and filming outside of the book store, the night went smoothly and uninterrupted. There were about 100 people in attendance, including Congressman Mark Takano who also read to the children. The event raised a total of about $500 plus book donations to contribute to the Trevor Project. Linda anticipates that Cellar Door Bookstore will hold another Story Hour in March. Firefighters Honored with Heroes Mural Idyllwild

L

ate last month, Third District County Supervisor Chuck Washington, joined by firefighters and law enforcement, presided over the unveiling of Idyllwild’s newest piece of art at the Idyllwild Public Library located at 54401 Village Center Drive. The “Heroes Mural” pays tribute to firefighters, notably those who protected the Idyllwild community after a fire broke out in July along State Route 74. The Cranston Fire, as it was called, ultimately blackened more than 13,000 acres in the San Jacinto Mountains, burning homes and structures and forcing the evacuation of Idyllwild, Lake Hemet, Mountain Center and Pine Cove. The scars of the fire remain visible. “The mural represents the hard work that both law enforcement and the firefighters do to keep the community safe,” said Supervisor Washington, who was joined by Idyllwild Fire Chief Patrick Reitz, Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Capt. Leonard Purvis of the Valle Vista station and members of CalFire. The mural rendered by artist Keith Blum, spans the back-exterior wall of the library. It depicts firefighters from multiple agencies, including the U.S. Forest Service, CalFire and Idyllwild Fire. Blum was originally inspired to paint a mural while attending an art show in Idyllwild. When the Cranston Fire broke out, Blum watched the fire and smoke from his home in Palm Springs. “I saw the smoke coming off the mountain, thick and dark, often blocking out the sun and dropping ash on us,” he said, adding that he was moved to donate his mural after seeing the “valiant efforts of the firefighters” to protect homes in Idyllwild. Blum spent a month painting the tribute with local businesses donating supplies, meals and lodging. He included a special thank you to his supporters in the mural.

“We are so excited to have this. We are so blessed to have this in our town,” Chief Reitz said. “We all come together for a common cause and that is to help our fellow human beings.”

with benefits. The bi-partisan push-back against Amtrak’s decision to close the Riverside facility was most clearly expressed by Riverside’s legislative representative Mark Takano (D) who said, “I can’t say I know at this moment what the solution is, and I wanted to let Richard Anderson [Amtrak CEO and president] know that Congress is watching.” Takano concluded, “But we’re asking that this decision be reversed. We don’t want it to close.” SEIU, continued from page 7

The Board admitted it was taking these actions to mitigate any alleged procedural errors. It will be interesting to see whether its predetermined (now abandoned) list of five finalists still influences their final selection. In the end, the Board side-stepped and managed around concerns over alleged Brown Act violations and successfully selected Dawn Rowe, a candidate from the short list of five contenders it had previously and furtively

F E A T U R E identified. Admittedly, mid-term vacancies on any County Board of Supervisors are infrequent, yet some question what county officials have learned from this experience that can be applied in the future? According to Wert, the Board will probably not begin assessing the current process until it is completed. The other question is, what have democratic constituents learned from this process that can be applied in the future? Interested constituents who were unable to attend the public hearing on December 13 and/or the December 18 meeting, can view the proceedings at www.sbcounty.gov/Main/Pages/ ViewMeetings.aspx.

the memorandum of understanding does not prevent the possibility of further negotiations with SEIU. Although the county has imposed a memorandum with SEIU, Washington explained the county’s willingness to continue negotiations with another union who represents a smaller group of county employees, the Laborer’s International Union of North America (LIUNA). “I support returning to the negotiating table with LIUNA, with whom the County of Riverside met nine times and who expressed a willingness today to compromise,” he stressed. “She also was grateful that we took an interest and helped to secure a star for her on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Wiley, her biggest cheerleader and husband felt race was a factor in why she wasn’t awarded one after such a stellar career, so he enlisted help from us at the Black Voice News,” Cheryl Brown remembered. “The campaign was on in the community and she was so honored when it happened that she invited the community to come to the presentation. When she found we were planning a bus load, she had to put on the breaks. It was on the streets of Hollywood and she wasn’t sure how the overwhelming support would work. Plus she was having a reception at the Roosevelt Hotel following the event. So she compromised and said she would come to a local event at our house for the people who were planning to attend. Again she came and brought her husband, mother, father, mother-inlaw and friends came to honor her. We presented her with a replica Hollywood star.” Rest in peace, Nancy we love and miss you. Memorial arrangements will follow at a later date.
