As the other live music capital of Texas, we are located between the east and west coasts, and under two hours from a major international airport. A 19th century political figure once said, “Music is the medicine of the mind.” It is no wonder why tens of thousands of visitors flock to our amazing indoor and outdoor music venues each year to enjoy the benefits of this tonic. We are indeed proud to be home to the Cowboy Capital of the World Pro-Rodeo. Where thousands of spectators gather each year to enjoy the best of this sport, and the last competition before the finals in Las Vegas. We are also home to a rich ranching and rodeo heritage of legendary men and women who shaped this sport into what it is today.

More cowboys per capita choose Stephenville as their home than any other city in the country. Recently included in the National Register of Historic Places, our downtown historic district contains over 22 full city blocks surrounding the 1892 Erath County Courthouse. Our remarkable downtown square boasts streets paved with Thurber bricks during the 1920s. Filled with a variety of shops and restaurants, this notable destination is a year-round delight. Known as the City of Champions, Stephenville regularly excels in athletic and academic achievements. National and state championships prevail at Stephenville ISD and at Tarleton State University, which is part of the Texas A&M System. We are also home to a satellite campus of Ranger College, one of the fasted growing two-year colleges in the nation. Museums bring

Erath County history to life

STEPHENVILLE Stephenville Museum

In historic Erath County, the Stephenville Museum is dedicated to collecting and preserving historical artifacts and structures and educating the public about the history of Stephenville and the surrounding area. The museum grounds have 10 nineteenth century structures furnished with period furniture and artifacts. The Chapel on the Bosque and the museum ground are available for indoor and outdoor special events. The museum hosts two free events on the grounds each year. By Gone Days on the Bosque takes place on the second Saturday in October and the Native and Heirloom Plant Fair is held in April. The Museum is located at 525 E. Washington street. Cross Timbers Fine Arts Council River North Gallery The goal of the Cross Timbers Fine Arts Council is to enrich and enhance the artistic environment of the Cross Timbers Area and make cultural activities accessible to all citizens. The arts come alive through the many events hosted throughout the year, including monthly art exhibits, ballet performances, concerts and more. CTFAC programs include music, theater, dance and art. The arts council also sponsors children’s theater, youth concerts, art camps and public art education programs in its eight-county service area. DUBLIN Ben Hogan Museum This is the first and only museum honoring legendary pro-golfer Ben Hogan and features rare and unique artifacts from Hogan’s youth and career. A Dublin Native, Hogan first picked up a golf club at a very young age and even fashioned his own golf clubs at the Dublin blacksmith shop where he worked. The museum has received the endorsement and support from the Hogan Foundation in Fort Worth and the Hogan family. For more information, call 254-445-4466, stop by the museum at 121 E. Dublin Historical Museum It is at the Dublin Historical Museum where the people’s story is told from farmers, doctors, lawyers, homemakers, preachers, teachers and more. The museum features thousands of ordinary - and extraordinary - artifacts that tell the stories of Dubliners. A docent will provide a guided tour or you

can browse at your own pace. The museum is located at 116 W. Blackjack Street in Dublin and is open 1-5 p.m. daily. For more information, call 254-445-4550.

Dublin Rodeo Heritage Museum This museum is filled with memorabilia from the heyday of Everett Colborn, producer of the world-famous Dublin Rodeo. Also on exhibit are artifacts from world champion cowboys Harry Tompkins, Ty Murray and others. There is a special exhibit that spotlights the first sanctioned event of the National Cutting Horse Association which was held in Dublin. The Dublin Rodeo Heritage Museum is open afternoons Monday - Saturday. The museum and gift shop are located at 118 W. Blackjack Street in Dublin. For more information, 254-445-0200.

Old Docs Soda Shop At Old Docs Soda Shop and W.P. “Bill” Kloster Museum, Annex stroll up to the beautifully restored soda fountain and experience an array of soft drinks made the old-fashioned way - with pure cane sugar - at Dublin Bottling Works. Tours of the bottling area give visitors an up-close look at how soft drinks are produced still using the 1920s era equipment. The museum also features a gift shop located inside Old Doc’s Soda Shop. The new W.P. “Bill” Kloster Museum Annex is located across the street from the bottling plant and will house more of the collections, including a recreation of Billie Kolster’s office with floor-to-ceiling Dr Pepper artifacts. Gordon Center The W.K. Gordon Center for Industrial History of Texas, a research facility of Tarleton State University, is a combined museum and special collections library. Located at the site of the Thurber ghost town, its interactive exhibits explore the birth and death of a company town.

Billy the Kid Museum

arrested for the first time at 16 for stealing food. He was accused of murdering a blacksmith in Arizona Territory in 1877. He spent most of his latter years in the territory that eventually became the state of New Mexico. New Mexico didn’t become the 47th state until Jan. 6, 1912. The consensus seems to be that Billy the Kid died at age 21 on July 14, 1881 in the town of Fort Sumner in New Mexico Territory, shot dead by Garrett. The sheriff was hoping to collect a $500 bounty — but never did because the body was quickly buried and he had no proof to show. ‘BRUSHY BILL’

The 2014 book, “Billy the Kid: An Autobiography” by Daniel A. Edwards, tells the story of how former Hico resident William H. “Brushy Bill” Roberts came to have his picture taken “alongside his own grave.” That man, Edwards concluded, was the infamous wild West character Billy the Kid. The gravesite was 84 miles west of what is now Roswell, New Mexico — where legend has it that he had been killed by sheriff-turned-bounty-hunter Pat Garrett. Edwards, 46, is a researcher and publisher who lives in a suburb of Philadelphia. He began researching Billy the Kid and "Brushy Bill" in early 2014. “If Brushy Bill was not Billy the Kid, he must have been at the Kid’s elbow when some of these things happened,” Edwards wrote in his book. Billy the Kid may not have been the cold-blooded, murdering gunslinger recorded in history books. Some believe he may have been more of a product of his times — perhaps a victim of the lawless frontier world where he lived. The passage of time, along with blurred lines between the “good guys” and “bad guys,” may have contributed to the conflicting stories about cattle ranchers, lawmen and real-life cowboys in the old West. Most historical accounts describe Billy the Kid as an outlaw, accused by some of killing more than 20 people. One source claims the number of people who actually died from “lead poisoning” (old West slang for being shot) after crossing paths with the Kid may have been “only” four. Billy the Kid, aka William Bonney, aka William Henry Roberts, had a rough start in life and became an orphan at age 14. He reportedly was

But a man known as “Brushy Bill” Roberts, told the story before he died in December 1950 that he was actually Billy the Kid. Brushy Bill was 90 — three days shy of turning 91. His wife, Lizzie, had him buried at a cemetery on the north side of Hamilton. The Brushy Bill story led to the opening of the popular Billy the Kid Museum, on North Pecan Street in downtown Hico in 1987. Sue Land, director of the Billy the Kid Museum, said she wasn’t really a believer in the Brushy Bill claim until she read Edwards’ book. Now her doubts are gone, and she is confident that Brushy Bill was Billy the Kid. “The man Pat Garrett killed had black hair and was dark-complected, and a black beard. Billy couldn’t grow a beard,” said Land, who at first had worked at the museum but took over as director in 2009 to prevent it from shutting down. “He had fair skin and light-brown hair.” Land said that after Garrett shot the man in Fort Sumner, a deputy sheriff rolled over the body and told Garrett it was not Billy the Kid. That scene was also witnessed by a U.S. Marshal who filed notice of it, according to Land. “Nobody questioned the newspaper description,” Land said. “The grave in Fort Sumner has no body.” Land said that it wasn’t the first time Garrett had failed in his attempt to get Billy. The legendary Kid — who had escaped from jail several times — was in Fort Sumner at the time Garrett was, but slipped away. Land said Billy went to Mexico for about three years, then lived in Texas for three years. She said at one point Billy even worked in law enforcement, using his cowboy skills to hunt down horse rustlers. CULTURAL REFERENCES The interest in Billy the Kid’s legend has remained high, with his name sometimes mentioned in the same breath as other infamous gunslingers — Jesse James, Wild Bill Hickok, John Wesley Hardin, Sam Bass and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Several movies have been made about the Kid’s legend, including four titled “Billy the Kid” (in 1911, 1930, 1941 and 1989). Two of the most fa-

mous and more recent were “Young Guns” (part I and II) and “Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid.” One source claims there have been more than 50 movies that included a Billy the Kid character. Young Guns I and II were both based around the Lincoln County War, a clash between rival frontier groups that began in 1878 in New Mexico Territory. BILLY TALKS Jesse Evans, a childhood friend of Billy, told a lawyer who was working on a property claim case in Florida that he and Billy the Kid were two of the three surviving combatants from the Lincoln County War. Edwards wrote that Morrison contacted the then 90-year-old Billy to interview him, he was “reluctant to share his story, especially since he was technically still wanted and condemned to hang for the murder of Sheriff William Brady, a crime he claimed he didn’t commit.” But, Edwards wrote, Billy “decided it was more important to make an attempt to secure the pardon that he was promised more than seventy years earlier than it was to remain a fugitive outlaw hiding in the shadows.” Sue Land, the museum’s director, said Billy decided to talk to Morrison so he could help him get the pardon he had long wanted. “He said, ‘You’ve got to promise me I won’t go to jail, and I want my pardon,'” Land said. “I can’t see why a 90-year-old with a bad heart would stand up and say he was a wanted killer, and was facing going back to jail the rest of his life.” Land said the museum gets visitors from all over the world. One of them, from the United Kingdom, told her why he was so interested in learning more about Billy the Kid’s legend. HICO A statue of Billy the Kid is planted in the median of Pecan Street in downtown Hico. The plaque below the statue states: “Ollie L. ‘Brushy Bill’ Roberts, alias Billy the Kid, died in Hico, Texas on December 27, 1950. He spent the last days of his life trying to prove to the world his true identity and obtain the pardon promised him by the governor of the state of New Mexico. We believe his story and pray to God for the forgiveness he solemnly asked for.” Hico had its first Billy the Kid Film Festival in 2015, and plans are in the works to bring it back this fall. Phillip Vasquez, a Stephenville attorney who lives with wife Lucy on a ranch near Hico, has been planning the last two years for the re-launch of the festival, Nov. 1-2. The original festival featured films about the old West and its gunslinger legacy. This year entries will be open to films that include a general “outlaw” theme, Vasquez said. An interesting and unique fact about Erath County is its dairy production. Erath County has always had a dairy presence but it wasn’t until the 90s when the county really evolved. “We had a lot of migration of dairymen to this area from other states like California, Arizona and then we had a pretty large Dutch migration here to dairy and that’s when Erath County really blew up and become the number one dairy county,” said Executive Director of the Texas Association of Dairymen (TAD) Darren Turley. Erath County was the number one dairy county for several years and had the most milk production in the state. “All across the county we got some attention because it was the hot place to get dairy,” Turley said. In all of Texas, there are 375 dairies with an estimated 539,000 cows.

For Erath County, there is a total of 52 dairy producers, over 93 million pounds of milk, over 10 million gallons of milk and 44,476 cows according to information from November 2018 that was obtained from the Texas Association of Dairymen website. There is even a statue of Moo-La, the famous mascot recognizing Erath County’s dairy industry, on the top of the courthouse square that was erected on Sept. 23, 1972. Although Erath County is no longer the number one dairy county in the state, it still one of the largest dairy counties in the nation and is still extremely large in the state of Texas. “This region, Dublin, Stephenville and Comanche, we’re about 10 to 11 percent of the state’s milk production... We’re still a very significant area of production,” Turley said.

Local family strives in the cheesemaking business

The Erath County dairy business has been booming for quite some time but one family in particular produces and distributes something a little bit different than milk: cheese. Stuart and Connie Veldhuizen moved from Minnesota to Erath County in 1990 to start their own dairy business. However, they noticed a steady decline in the dairy industry and eventually came up with the idea to produce and sell cheese in 2002. “Traditional dairying wasn’t going well at that time and we were looking at what else we could do. We were looking for something to add value in the dairy business,” Connie said. “We had the facilities here and what else could we do with this dairy besides just selling milk? And so we just looked into options and cheesemaking came to mind.”  Although dairying has been in Stuart’s family for generations, he’s the first of his family to get into the cheesemaking business and it’s definitely served him and his family well. Three of Connie and Stuart’s seven children help

them with the business. The Veldhuizen family owns 180 acres of land with 50 cows, a store where the cheese is produced and sold, and two aging facilities.  “We actually milk the cows here and make the cheese so this makes us a farmstead operation,” Connie said. “Not all cheesemakers do that. Some buy their milk and then make the cheese, but we do it all.”

Connie said she starts off making cheese by first milking the cows, then they fill up their milk tank and then they move the milk over to the vat which contains 300 gallons of milk. They heat the milk up slightly to about 89 degrees and then add cultures, which are added to help control the ripening process of the milk. “There are different cultures depending on the type of cheeses you make. Most of our cheeses use just a couple cultures,” she said. They then add rennin which is used to coagulate the milk and what makes the milk thick. They let it set up for about an hour and then they start stirring. “It will then start to curd and get smaller and smaller until it’s about the size of cottage cheese curd and then we drain off our whey so they’re separated,” Connie said.  Once the process is

completed, the cheese is stored in one of the two aging facilities that are kept at 54 degrees on the Veldhuizen farm.  The youngest Veldhuizen son, Eli, said that in their aging room, they have about 6,000 wheels of cheese and that when the cheese is brought into the facility, it receives a thick wax coating on the outside. After that, each wheel of cheese is flipped on its shelf twice a week. Eli likes to think of cheesemaking as an art.

“I think it’s really interesting how you can take all the same ingredients and elements of something and by changing it just a little bit, make it something different,” he said. “So with cheese, if you make it two degrees different then that will change the flavor.”  Producing and selling all of that cheese certainly keeps the Veldhuizens busy but they still find time to give tours of their farm and they even host events throughout their year like their annual free Family Farm Day that happens in the spring. The Veldhuizen family offers several dairy items to the public like 15 different varieties of cheese, raw milk, cow and sheep yogurt, free-range children and duck eggs and much more. Up, Up and Away

One event that makes Stephenville unique is the Moo-La Fest that took place for the first time at the end of May. With 15 hot air balloons, a carnival, bounce houses, food trucks, wine tasting and live entertainment, Moo-La fest brought in visitors from several different locations. Emily Russell, who grew up in Stephenville but now lives in Haslett as a teacher and coach, said her favorite thing was “the sight of all of the hot air balloons because Stephenville has never had that before.” The Moo-La Fest also featured hot air balloon tethered rides where individuals could

actually ride in a hot air balloon and take in the beautiful scenery of the Stephenville City Park as they were slowly ascending 40 feet in the air and then back down. The public also enjoyed the sendoff of the hot air balloons at 6 a.m. one summer morning as well as the hot air balloon glow at night. Katie Kilcoyne is a flight attendant from Stephenville and now resides in Fort Worth. She said her favorite event was the wine tasting. “I thought the hot air balloons were beautiful. The hot air balloon glow at night was really exciting and I was also excited

to see the tethered rides,” she said. “I hope they do it again next year because this has been really awesome. I thought they did a lot of great work and it was a very organized event and family-friendly.” Several other attendees also said they look forward to this event again next year. “Honoring our dairy families set the stage for Moo-La Fest. We received heartwarming accolades from our dairy families, balloonists, vendors, musicians, out of town guests and our very own citizens,” said Julie Crouch-Smith, manager of Stephenville’s Tourism and Visitor Bureau. “We appreciate all the sponsors, volunteers and city staff who made this event udderly epic!”

Experience LJT Stephenville is home to one of the most popular country music festivals in Texas and if you’re in Erath County around April, you’re bound to hear something about LJT.

For over 30 years, Larry Joe Taylor’s annual Texas Music Festival has brought thousands and thousands of Texas country music lovers to Melody Mountain Ranch every spring for several days of fun, music and a great party. Some of the biggest Texas country bands rock the stage at Melody Mountain Ranch every year like Six Market Blvd, Pat Green, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Deryl Dodd, Jason Eady & Courtney Patton and, of course, Larry Joe Taylor. With performances beginning at 10 a.m. and continuing throughout the night, LJT packs over 50 acts onto four stages in six days every year, but the music always continues at campfire jams. Although it’s hard to believe now, LJT’s first music festival was held in the small Texas town of Mingus back in 1989. Larry Joe wanted a place where he and his friends could play their own music and also provide a music friendly environment for both the artists and the fans. During the first festival, only about 100 people were in attendance with the first few festivals drawing music fans from the 70s “outlaw” era. Several years later, the festival became known as a starting point for many talented but unknown singers and songwriters to let their talents shine and to get their name out there. Now, the event brings around 60,000 people each year where country music fans camp out, sing, tell stories around a campfire and listen to some of the best original music in the nation.

The event continues to grow every year so to accommodate the large crowd, the festival usually has over 30 food vendors, an ATM, showers and 500 portable restrooms.When asked what’s behind the steady growing popularity of the event that has lasted for more than three decades, LJT said it’s simply the music. “It’s the popularity of Texas music. There are a lot more people playing in the state and a lot more people attending concerts in the state,” he said. “There are also a lot of people from California and Florida getting involved and what many people don’t realize is that Kansas is the new frontier for Texas music. They are getting it.”

How Stephenville got its name

Few travelers on West Washington Street in Stephenville take notice of two rock arches erected on either side of the entrance to a short street next to the old Piggly Wiggly building. Yet, these pillars are just a little bit of the history that surrounds Stephenville. The street is named for George B Erath, who surveyed the county and the city of Stephenville and who lived in the log cabin at the end of this street for a time. The bronze plaque attached to one of the pillars reads in part, “In memory of George Bernhard Erath, protector of the Texas frontier, hero of San Jacinto, major in the Confederate Army member of the Texas Congress and Legislature.” This memorial to Erath was erected by the Texas Centennial Commission in 1938 at a cost of $1000. In 1845, George B Erath, land surveyor, rode a horse from Waco

back up the Bosque River to where approximately midway between Huckabay nad Lingleville. It is said that he returned with glowing reports about the tall grass, wild animals, and fertile soil in this unsettled country. In the 1800s the upper Bosque river valley was a heavy wooded area that can best be described as park like. The name, Bosque, means brushy or forest-like in Spanish, terms which would best describe the land where settlers hacked out the town-site of Stephenville. Buffalo roamed freely and there was some danger from Native Americans and several deadly raids took place. Erath, was up to that time, a part of Bosque County and prior to that, had been a part of the Milam District. At this point, the history of Erath County links directly to the Battle of the Alamo. John Blair was one of the men who had the unwavering courage to stand and fight against tyranny in an ageless struggle for

freedom. He was one of the 32 men from Tennessee who fought and died at the Alamo. In May 1854, the heirs of John Blair received a land patient from the State of Texas in honor of his death at the Alamo. The executor sold 1920 acres for $500 to John M. Stephen and in return Stephen agreed to settle no closer than 30 miles to any inhabited part of Texas. Thus Stephen and his brother, William along with other pioneers, located in present day Stephenville. At that time there was only one house between them and the town of Meridian. According to “Memoirs of George B. Erath” written by his daughter, Lucy, about 30 settlers, including John M. Stephen, moved to this area, settling on the banks of Bosque. John M. Stephen made an agreement with the others that he would give land for the County Court House and building lots for his fellow settlers and for several churches if the town was named Stephenville and was designated the County Seat. This

was accepted by the State of Texas and in 1856 the County of Erath was organized with Stephenville as the County Seat. The plot of the original town shows the public square as its center and contains 25 blocks of one acre each. Green Street bounded the town on the north, then Mason, Washington, College, Benton, and Long. On the east side was laid out, Floral, Virginia, Graham, Belknap, Columbia, and Barton. The Streets were to be 50 feet wide. By 1958 the population of Stephenville was 766 with two stores and a hotel. Within months several salons open on the square and church services were held nearby. Buffalo roamed within a couple of miles of the city and hunters were kept busy killing them off until they disappeared. The city we know today was a hundred and fifty years in the future.

Stephenville:

The Cowboy Capital of the World

If you’re a rodeo fan, then you’ve probably heard a little bit about Stephenville and Erath County’s claim to be the Cowboy Capital of the World. The world's oldest rodeo took place on July 4, 1888 when a group of Prescott, Arizona, merchants and professional businessmen organized the first formalized “cowboy tournament” and offered cash prizes. But it wasn’t until 1940 when rodeo was first introduced to Erath County when the area opened its first rodeo in Dublin’s city park. In 1969, the first ever Rodeo Cowboys Association (RCA) sanctioned rodeo began in the Erath County

Livestock Association Arena. In 1975, the RCA evolved into the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) and the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA).

Every year, more than 600 cowboys and cowgirls from all over the U.S. converge in Stephenville for the World Pro Rodeo in September for over $100,000 in cash, buckles, spurs and trophy rifles.

Eventually, the rodeo grew and it was hard to keep the outdoor fairgrounds maintained so the rodeo was moved to Lone Star Arena.

According to the CCPRA history, for four years, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018, the Cowboy Capital of the World Pro Rodeo was honored to be nominated as one of the PRCA’s Top 5 Medium Sized Rodeo of the Year.

The Lone Star Arena has been a major landmark for the Stephenville area since the 1980s and is known for its contribution to the “Cowboy Capital of the World” image and heritage. The rodeo became so popular that in 2013, the Cowboy Capital Pro Rodeo Association (CCPRA) was formed.

Since September 2013, leading up to the World Pro Rodeo, Stephenville has a weeklong celebration called Rodeo Heritage Week with fun festivities including a parade, a rodeo queen contest, dummy roping, 5K, live music, fashion show and so much more.

According to Stephenville's Chamber of Commerce, Stephenville is home to more professional cowboys and cowgirls per square foot than anywhere else in the world like Jim Sharp, Cody Ohl, JJ Hampton and tons more.

However, ven though Stephenville is known as the Cowboy Capital of the World, in 2013, according to the San Antonio Express News, Bandera has official claim to the title of Cowboy Capital of the World. But with Stephenville owning the title or not, it’s safe to say that rodeo will always be a huge part of this small Texas town.

Whether you are looking to start your basics in a small class setting, complete a program started years ago, or obtain a workforce certification, Ranger College- Erath Center, located in Stephenville, has something for everyone. Dr. Jennifer Kent, Vice President of Ranger College, oversees the Erath Center and is passionate about higher education and the doors it opens to a better life. “Many of our students choose to start out in the community college setting because of its affordability and small class sizes,” Kent explained. “For non-traditional students, returning to classes after years away can be intimidating, and a small class size of 20 helps alleviate anxiety and self-doubt because of the one-on-one help from our caring instructors.” Kent added, “We love advising our students to see how the classes they take today can lead them to a Bachelor’s and even Master’s degree at Tarleton State University.” Mrs. Stephanie Worrels, the Assistant VP and Lead Advisor at Ranger, runs many of the day-today operations in Stephenville and also counsels students who

may be considering a workforce certification. “In a wonderful community like Stephenville, students can obtain a certification quickly and enter the workforce locally,” Worrels stated. “From machining, welding, EMT, cosmetology, and licensed vocational nursing, Ranger College is committed to offering programs that lead to rewarding careers.”

Both Kent and Worrels are looking forward to the continued growth of Ranger College in Stephenville. Beginning in the spring, Ranger will offer a Kinesiology pathway for students who are interested in a career in coaching or athletic training, as well as an Early Childhood Development pathway for students who are interested in Child & Family Studies. Both programs will flow seamlessly to Tarleton and will help students get started towards required classes needed for their major. The Ranger team is ready to help anyone considering starting or continuing their path in higher education or workforce certification.

At any given time, there are likely to be several hundred Dublin Dollars in circulation. What does that mean to you, as a business owner? It means that if you are a member of the Dublin Chamber of Commerce and if you choose to participate, you may receive these Dublin Dollars in payment for services or products, just like you accept real money. Dublin Dollars are put into circulation by individuals who purchase them from the chamber to use like gift cards or by organizations such as the Dublin schools which use them as end-of-year incentives or rewards. Sometimes they are awarded by the chamber to the winners of contests or door prizes or in “welcome packets.” Dozens of local merchants accept Dublin Dollars. Then they exchange them for cash at the chamber office.

Sales tax is vital to every community, especially small towns, and it is unfortunate to lose money to a neighboring community when the same product is available in a Dublin store. Each month, hundreds of dollars in Dublin Dollars are redeemed at the chamber office by grocery and convenience stores, hair salons, hardware stores, gift shops, restaurants, etc. Even non-profit organizations can accept them as donations, if they are chamber members.
