Welcome to STEPHENVILLE Whether you are just visiting for a few days or planning to plant your feet here for a lifetime, the Stephenville Chamber of Commerce welcomes you to our great town and hopes your experience here is enjoyable! Known as the ‘Cowboy Capital of the World’ and the ‘City of Champions’, Stephenville takes pride in having residents who are warm, inviting and gracious, combining a strong work ethic with a giving heart. While most July Danley noted for being home to more professional President/CEO cowboys and cowgirls than any other place in the world, our community also boasts many other unique qualities. Agriculture is the leading industry, with Erath County ranking in the Top 3 counties for milk production in the state. In addition to farmers and ranchers, Fortune 500 companies along with family-owned businesses thrive in Stephenville as they draw from our strong workforce, educational opportunities, and family-oriented atmosphere. Tarleton State University, a part of the Texas A&M University System, is known far and wide for creating a culture of excellence in both academic and athletic programs. Erath County is also served by Ranger College, offering a variety of continuing education and workforce training for students of all ages. Our community strongly believes that investing in our youth is a wise and worthwhile endeavor. Families seeking a positive place to raise kids will find an excellent school system, service clubs dedicated to youth projects, numerous sports leagues, and family fun events at parks, museums and churches throughout the year. Stephenville is a special place that reflects pride in the community’s rich heritage and commitment to the future. We hope you enjoy your time here and feel confident you will soon see why Stephenville has been listed as one of ‘The 100 Best Small Towns in America!’

OUR MISSION The Chamber of Commerce’s primary goal is to support and promote Stephenville in a unified effort to enhance growth and improve the quality of life by implementing programs in the areas of Community Development, Economic Development and Tourism Development.

The College of Graduate Studies offers both teaching and research-based master’s degrees and a doctorate in Educational Leadership Tarleton’s rich history and traditions live in the hearts of students and alumni, linking generations. As a welcoming and friendly community, Tarleton offers the personal attention, warmth and faculty interaction expected at a smaller college. Always improving its academic offerings, Tarleton last year added a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering and two degree programs for the outreach centers — a master’s track in applied psychology in Fort Worth and a bachelor’s in agribusiness in Waco. Tarleton is among 44 universities nationally participating in a Re-Imagine the First Year College Experience project with initiatives to boost student performance and retention, and has joined the prestigious Carnegie Project on

Educational Doctorate. The university continues to expand and renovate its facilities. Construction has begun on a $54-million Engineering Building to upgrade engineering and technology programs. A $26.4 million renovation of Memorial Stadium begins this fall. As the largest non-land grant agricultural university in the nation, Tarleton opened a new 24,000 square-foot Agricultural Field Machinery and Fabrication Laboratory in January. The former fire station at Harbin and Frey streets has become the University Police Station and projects to improve walkways and utilities will wrap up late this year. Tarleton, intent on becoming the premier student-focused university in Texas and beyond, is the perfect place for students to thrive. Tarleton’s reach extends beyond Stephenville with expanding programs in Waco, Midlothian, Fort Worth and Global Campus online.

n Texas, the central mission of public community colleges is to provide access to higher education. To this end, the Texas legislature has charged community colleges with operating inside service districts similar to independent school districts. Ranger College’s service district encompasses Brown, Comanche, Erath and Young counties, and portions of Eastland County. Our campus in Stephenville is named the Ranger College Erath County Center (RCEC) because we serve the entire county. RC has seen tremendous growth over the past decade, including a rapidly growing high school dual enrollment program. Recent course additions include Introduction to World Religions, Physical Geology, Introduction to Theater, Child Psychology, Agricultural Economics, and Wildlife Conservation and Management. Recently we added a child development program, which will house both an associate’s degree in Early Childhood Education and multiple certificates. It will include a

Child Development Center (daycare) that will serve the public with space for 75 children aged 12 months to 12 years. We also have a growing slate of continuing education offerings, including multiple health and human services classes such as Certified Nurse Aide and Medication Administration. Our newest continuing education addition is a class in drone aviation. Ranger College is one of the leading colleges in Texas in receiving awards from the Texas Workforce Commission under their Skills Development Fund program. In

this capacity, we provide highly specialized and customized training for businesses in our Erath County service district. The Ranger College Department of Workforce Development provides training and programs of study for local demand occupations. Students may be traditional career seeking, or studying to increase skills to compete for job placement or advancement with local business, industry or agencies. Industries served include manufacturing, agriculture, and healthcare.

The estimated economic impact of Ranger College’s workforce training courses and programs total in excess of $4,000,000 annually in new jobs and wage increases. Our aim is to be a full-service community and technical college, and we encourage all prospective students and interested community members to come visit our Erath County Center, located at 1835 West Lingleville Road in Stephenville (just across from Jaycee Park), to see how we can meet your needs.

are dramatically affected by early detection of breast cancers. If breast cancer is found early, the five-year survival rate is almost 100%. 3D mammography detects 41% more invasive cancers, while reducing false alarms by up to 40%. • 3D detects breast cancer up to 15 months earlier than 2D • There are no extra compressions required but the results are images with better details, and the Radiologist views the breast tissue in layers instead of in a flat image. Not only is our equipment superior, but our staff is as well! With over 50 years’ experience between them, our staff of Mammography Technicians and Radiologists Radiologist provides breast health services to women of our community. They are dedicated to providing the best care possible. Friendly and compassionate, they make otherwise uncomfortable procedures bearable. When making your home in Stephenville and choosing a healthcare provider who has your best interests at heart, choose Stephenville Medical & Surgical Clinic, home of The Genius 3D Mammography™ exam, the first and only clinically superior breast exam that is approved by the FDA.

hy drive s Ford when you can drive a Jaguar? You may be asking yourself, “What does this statement have to do with healthcare?” and you would be right to do so. Let us explain. In late 2016, Stephenville Medical & Surgical Clinic, whose foundation in Erath County dates back to 1929, decided to build upon that foundation and offer patients a new exciting technology: 3D Mammography. One might compare 2D to 3D and use the terms Ford as compared to Jaguar when doing so. 2D mammography offered patients the best pictures available for many years; however, with the invention of 3D, things became clearer and more beneficial to the patients we serve. It’s like driving a Ford (2D) when you can drive a Jag (3D). The owners of SMSC knew that this technology would be of benefit to patients, and they made the decision to purchase the equipment, knowing that only a certain population of patients would ever use the technology. Why? • Doctors agree that early detection is the best defense against breast cancer. Successful treatment and survival rates for breast cancer patients

Road trippin’

B

ecause of Stephenville’s location, it’s an easy place from which to shoot off into some truly fun day trips. Great dining, shopping, and a myriad of fun things to see and do lie in every direction.

City of Hico Hico is a charming little town that’s perfect for the shoppers in your circle. Just take Hwy. 281 about 20 miles to a bevy of unique stops. While walking around the historic district, be sure to check out one-of-a kind stores like Blue Star Trading, Sugar Moon Antiques and nationallyrecognized Wiseman House chocolates. Save time for a trip through the Billy the Kid Museum and don’t forget to stop in at the Koffee Kup Café, voted one of the 40 best small-town cafes in Texas, where they serve some of the best pie in the state.

Bluff Dale Vineyards Bluff Dale Vineyards − at 5222 County Road 148 just outside Bluff Dale on Hwy. 377 offers a beautiful, laid-back countryside destination for a day trip. There you can sample some wine and relax in the vineyard’s tasting room or on the deck overlooking the fields of grapes. Winning honors at wine festivals all over Texas is second nature to Bluff Dale Vineyards with their Paragon and Nexus wines. Snacks are available in the tasting room or you’re welcome to bring a picnic lunch. They’re open every day but Tuesday, between noon and 6 p.m.

Dublin Bottling Works The City of Dublin only 13 miles from Stephenville is home to the oldest soft drink bottling facility in the state of Texas, Dublin Bottling Works. This 120-year-old plant − formerly the home of Dublin Dr Pepper − is located in the heart of the downtown area with easy access and plenty of free parking. Take time to sample something sweet or grab a sandwich at Old Doc’s Soda Shop. You’re also invited to inspect the museum and gift shop. Tours of the facility and its 1930s-era, still-in-use bottling equipment are available all day.

24

Veldhuizen Family Farm Before or after the Dublin Bottling Works, see if you can work in a visit on your journey between Stephenville and Dublin, at the Veldhuizen Family Farm. This is as the name implies, a family run dairy farm that’s just off Hwy. 377 at 425 Private Road 1169. There you can sample premium gourmet and artisan cheeses, handmade and aged on site. Their Texas Gold Cheddar and Bosque Blue are top sellers There so don’t miss tasting those. Tours are also available. Going towards Dublin on Hwy. 377, keep an eye out for the Catholic Church with the domes on the right. If you go past that, you’ve just missed your turn on the left. You can also visit the website or call for driving directions.

City of Granbury Granbury is just 32 miles north on Hwy. 377 and it’s easily one of the best places for a shopping or dining day trip. Get going on the courthouse square with all kinds of shops and restaurants. And don’t miss Granbury Theater Company, where Broadway-style shows are produced at a highly professional level. A great spot for those with kids is Granbury City Beach Park located at 623 W. Pearl Street and features white sand imported directly from South Padre Island and a water spray park to keep them busy. The beach features the Tiki Hut concession stand, serving food, drinks and snacks. Thatched roof pavilions are available for reservation. Two great spots near Granbury for adults are Barking Rocks Winery, offering handcrafted premium wines, and Revolver Brewing, an artisanal microbrewery specializing in craft beers. Barking Rocks, located at 1919 Allen Court, is open for tastings on Saturdays, First Fridays and also

“by chance.” Revolver Brewing, situated at 5650 Matlock Road, has Saturday tours, tastings and live music. They also provide various activities to keep the younger set entertained.

City of Glen Rose The town square in Glen Rose is well known for its charming shops, art galleries and cozy eateries. Be sure to check out Barnard’s Mill and Art Museum that was the first permanent structure in Glen Rose, built in 1860. This National and Texas Historic Places site is open on weekends and features 12 rooms of watercolors, bronzes, oils, etchings and artifacts. Glen Rose is also home to a variety of endangered animals that you can see up close and personal on motor tours at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, about five miles out of town. They offer a beautiful drive-through preserve with exotic animals such as a rhino, zebras, wildebeests and more. Also near Glen Rose is Dinosaur Valley State Park that’s been named by Frommer’s Travel Guides as one of the 100 best places to take kids in the United States. It’s just four miles west of town on U.S. Highway 67, then another mile on Park Road 59. It features some of the best preserved dinosaur tracks in the world. Other activities include camping, picnicking, hiking, mountain biking, equestrian use, river swimming, fishing and wildlife observation. Also located on Park Road 59 is Dinosaur World where you can walk among more than 100 life-size dinosaur reproductions. There’s a museum, complete with replicas and fossils, and a simulated dinosaur dig for the kids. Picnic lunches are welcome and as long as your pet, is on a leash, you can bring your furry buddy.

Museums offer a step back in time

ecause Stephenville is known as “The Cowboy Capital of the World,” history or art buffs might not automatically think of our city and surrounding areas as places that offer a diverse selection of historical and artistic treasure troves. Here’s a quick overview of some of the most interesting places in Erath County:

Stephenville Historical House Museum One of the finest museums in our area is this jewel right in the heart of Stephenville, just a few blocks from 40

the Erath County Courthouse. The Stephenville Historical House Museum is dedicated to collecting and preserving historical structures and artifacts as well as educating the public about the city’s history along with that of the surrounding area. There are 10, 12, 19th-century structures on the grounds, all furnished with period furniture and other authentic memorabilia. In addition to year-round access, the museum hosts two major free events each year: The Native and Heirloom Plant Fair that’s held in April, and another on the second Saturday in October, By Gone Days on the Bosque − a direct leap back in time, complete with banjo-playing Southern Belles and shoot ‘em up gunfighters in period regalia. In addition, the Chapel on the Bosque

and the museum grounds are available for indoor and outdoor special events − and it’s an understatement to say that plenty more than one couple has started their marital journey together by “tying the knot” on the idyllic grounds. The museum is located at 525 East Washington Street. Call 254-965-5880 for more information.

Cross Timbers Fine Arts Council Too many memorable events to list here are hosted throughout the year at the Cross Timbers Fine Arts Council, where the arts come alive through the constant efforts of

Museums offer a step back in time

Dublin Historical Museum Just 13 miles outside Stephenville in the neighboring city of Dublin, stories of people who helped shape the area’s history are told at the Dublin Historical Museum. The museum features thousands of extraordinary artifacts from old-time farmers, doctors, lawyers, homemakers, preachers, teachers and other Dubliners. You can browse at your own pace − or go on a tour guided by a museum docent. The museum is located at 116 West Blackjack

Street in Dublin. For more information call 254-445-4550.

Dublin Rodeo Heritage Museum Back to the cowboy-heritage of Erath County, the Dublin Rodeo Heritage Museum is filled with memorabilia from Everett Colborn, the producer of the once-worldfamous Dublin Rodeo. There’s a special exhibit that spotlights the first sanctioned event of the National Cutting Horse Association, held in Dublin and the museum also holds artifacts from world champion cowboys Harry Tompkins, Ty Murray and many others. The museum is open afternoons from 1 to 5 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday and is located, along with its gift shop, at 118 West Blackjack Street in Dublin. For more information call 254-445-0200.

Ben Hogan Museum This is the first and only museum honoring the legendary pro-golfer and Dublin native, Ben Hogan. The Ben Hogan Museum in Dublin offers visitors a rare and unique look at artifacts from Hogan’s youth and career. As a young boy, Hogan picked up his first golf club and for all intents and purposes, never put it down. In fact, Hogan later even fashioned a set of his own clubs at the Dublin blacksmith shop where he worked.

The Hogan Foundation in Fort Worth and the Hogan family have given their endorsement and support to the museum. For more information stop by the museum at 121 East Blackjack Street, call 254-445-4466, or visit benhoganmuseum.org.

area give visitors a close-up look at how soft drinks are still produced in house, using 1930s-era equipment. The museum also offers a sandwich and gift shop as part of Old Doc’s Soda Shop. Across the street from the bottling plant is the W.P. “Bill” Kloster Museum Annex that houses more of the collection, including a re-creation of Billie Kloster’s office with floor-to-ceiling Dr Pepper artifacts. For more information call, 888398-1024 or visit dublinbottlingworks.com.

W.K. Gordon Center Last – but certainly not least by a long shot – is the W.K. Gordon Center for Industrial History of Texas that’s located at 65258 Interstate 20 in nearby Mingus. It’s true “three-fer” − a combined museum, special collections library and research facility for Tarleton State University. Across I-20 from the W.K. Gordon Center is the site of the Thurber ghost town, with its interactive exhibits that explore the birth and death of a 19th Century Texas company town. By the way, virtually all the red bricks you’ll see still paving older Stephenville and Dublin streets were made in once-thriving Thurber. Call 254-968-1886 for more information.

Dublin Bottling Works A for-sure-don’t-miss-it delight is the still-producing Dublin Bottling Works at 105 East Elm Street. There you can step up to the beautifully-restored soda fountain and experience an array of soft drinks made the old-fashioned way − with pure cane sugar. At Old Docs Soda Shop and the W.P. “Bill” Kloster Museum Annex, tours of the bottling

s the other live music capital of Texas, we are located between the east and west coasts, and under two hours from a major international airport. A 19th century political figure once said, “Music is the medicine of the mind.” It is no wonder why tens of thousands of visitors flock to our amazing indoor and outdoor music venues each year to enjoy the benefits of this tonic. We are indeed proud to be home to the Cowboy Capital of the World Pro-Rodeo. Where thousands of spectators gather each year to enjoy the best of this sport, and the last competition before the finals in Las Vegas. We are also home to a rich ranching and rodeo heritage of legendary men and women who shaped this sport into what it is today. More cowboys per capita choose Stephenville as their home than any other city in the country. Recently included in the National Register of Historic Places, our downtown historic district contains over 22 full city blocks surrounding the 1892 Erath County Courthouse. Our remarkable downtown square boasts streets paved with Thurber bricks during the 1920s. Filled with a variety of shops and restaurants, this notable destination is a year-round delight. Known as the City of Champions, Stephenville regularly excels in athletic and academic achievements. National and state championships prevail at Stephenville ISD and at Tarleton State University, which is part of the Texas A&M System. We are also home to a satellite campus of Ranger College, one of the fasted growing two-year colleges in the nation. Last spring, Ranger College graduated the largest class in their 92-year history here. Thank you for visiting Stephenville. Enjoy our famous chicken fried steaks and BBQ and shop at our one of a kind boutiques and antiques to delight any shopper from cowboy hats to that perfect gift. With our picturesque Bosque River Trail, Splashville and City Parks, see for yourself why Stephenville has been listed among “The 100 Best Small Towns in America.”
