We come into the game on the back of an excellent result at Ashford United - never a happy hunting ground for us over the years on Saturday when we came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 despite not being at our best. This Saturday we host Beckenham Town in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup. We've never reached the second qualifying round before so there is every incentive for us in that Enjoyone. the game today and get behind the boys. Come on you Wasps! Against Cray Valley PM the following Tuesday we had our chances to get something only to succumb to a goal in the second half. It's a game I felt could have gone either way. We then went down to Lancing in the FA Cup and scoring two early goals gave us the platform to go on and express ourselves and win 4-1. We took our chances but I was also pleased with our defensive work against a lively Lancing side who caused us Thenproblems.onSaturday we came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 against Ashford United. We weren't fluent in spells in the game but there is no questioning our spirit and togetherness. We got a goal back and then took the initiative to go on and grab an Soequaliser.plentyof positives but also lots for me, Ian and Sarg to work on so we can keep improving and remaining competitive in a tough division. Thanks for your support on the road recently, it's much appreciated. Please get behind the boys today - it makes such a difference. I'm away today so Ian is in charge, and I'm hoping he can guide us to three points. Good luck to us!

5 MANAGER’S NOTES EastGrinsteadTownFC @egtfcwasps

It'sTown.alocal derby so there is likely to be a bit more of an edge to the match. We'll certainly need to be at our best to get the three Lookingpoints.back to recent games, it was good to start the season two weeks ago with a 1-0 win over Chatham Town, one of the sides fancied to do well this season. It was a hardworking performance and I felt we deserved the three points.

Richard Tramontin (Chairman)

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to The OHOB Community Stadium for this Bank Holiday Monday Isthmian League South East Division match against Haywards Heath Town. I would like to extend a warm welcome to the travelling players, management, officials and supporters from Haywards Heath as well as to today’s referee Will Briers and his assistants James Black and Stephen Matthews. I trust you all enjoy your visit to East Court and our Martinhospitality.Dynan’s Haywards Heath have not had the start to the season that he and everyone had been expecting having picked up just one point from their first three league matches – a 2-2 draw at home to Lancing after being 2-0 up at half time - they lost their opener away at VCD Athletic and on Saturday, conceded in the 87th minute at home against Ramsgate to lose 2-1. They were also knocked out of the FA Cup by Leatherhead in the Preliminary Round. Martin will be looking for more this afternoon I am sure. Our last encounter was here in December last year which ended in a 1-1 draw. With Drew and Sarge away this weekend, Ian Nicholls will be in charge today and I know our fans will give Ian their full vocal support. Ian was in charge on Saturday at Ashford United and we came away with a never say die 2-2 draw after being 2-0 down with two subs scoring, Thibault Abie (61st minute) and Matt Daniel (76th minute) with an assist from the third sub Omar Folkes. We didn’t know for sure until Friday morning whether the match was going to be played on their 3G pitch as Ashford were having problems getting an inspection undertaken for the necessary certification and had previously had to postpone their home match against TalkingSevenoaks.pitches, I’m sure everyone will agree that our pitch is looking fantastic, and it is getting many plaudits. My thanks go to Ben and his team at Complete Turf Care. We are looking for more volunteers in various areas at the club. Volunteers are the backbone of grassroots football across the country. An estimated 1.4m people dedicate their time every week to help ensure that each of the 89,000 teams across England continues to offer the opportunity for people to play the national game. Support your local community club, get active and meet new people. Areas where we could do with more support include bar, stewarding, turnstiles, media etc so if anyone wants to get involved, please speak to me or one of my Wecolleagues.areback in FA Cup action on Saturday when we host Isthmian League newcomers Beckenham Town in the First Round Qualifying. This follows our wins over Hollands & Blair and Lancing in the previous rounds. Barring a replay if that match ends level after 90 minutes, our next match will then be the following Saturday when we travel all the way to Wroxham in Norfolk, in the First Round Qualifying of the FA ITrophy.wouldlike to thank you all for coming along this afternoon and whatever the outcome of the match, I trust everyone enjoys their visit to The OHOB Community Stadium and I wish you all a safe journey home.

Enjoy the match

But just before half-time Simon Tadman reestablished our two-goal lead. A quiet beginning to the second half before Ben Burns and Stuart O’Hara both scored for us in the last 20 minutes to give us a handsome 5-1 win.

Back to the game itself. We got off to a great start with Michael Turville and Barry Leete both scoring in the first 10 minutes. Adam Dart felt a bit sorry for Bexhill as he put the ball in his own net after 25 minutes.

Some of us will remember that August Bank Holiday Mondays used to be the first Monday in August – and therefore not likely to be used for a round of football matches. But moving the Bank Holiday to the last Monday in 1965 – though not for Scotland where it is still the first Monday – has opened up another date for a round of football I’mmatches.looking

The front cover has three players in blue who have played a significant part in our recent history - Dave Gellatly, Grant Hearn and goalkeeper Dave Tidy. Grant Hearn is our under 23 manager in 2022.

Manager Bob Smith asks us, with that 7-0 defeat in mind, not to be too concerned about performance to date. We have only played 3 league matches and have four points. We are suffering with injuries and Drew Cooney – yes today’s Drew – is looking to start light training in the next week or so.

FROMPROGRAMMESTHEPAST

EastGrinsteadTownFC @egtfcwaspswww.egtfc.co.uk10

to look at a couple of programmes for past matches played on Bank Holiday Monday and we start with East Grinstead v Bexhill on Monday 29 August 2005 in division 2 of the Sussex County League.

The programme was a very busy one with 40 pages starting with a welcome to our visitors from the Sussex coast who had just gained promotion from division three and, as it happens, we had played them in a pre-season friendly which ended up at 2-2, though both teams had been missing lots of players. We had recently played VCD in the FA Cup and we had lost 7-0 and “East Court was a pretty depressing place to be”. There followed a discussion about the plusses and minuses of entering the FA Cup – but we have entered the FA Cup every year since. Maybe the 2022/23 season will be our FA Cup season!

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 10 Now our first season in the Isthmian League when the fixtures man gave us a long journey for Guernsey v East Grinstead on Monday 25 August Guernsey2014.also had a home match on the previous Saturday afternoon against South Park and so the programme was to cover both games. Not surprisingly we are told that “We know very little about the Wasps”, and they demonstrate their lack of knowledge later in the programme when they call us The Sparks –which is of course the nickname of South Park. Onto the game – but there’s a story to tell you before I tell you about the game. Getting to Guernsey requires an aeroplane. We had met at Gatwick at 6.45 in the morning for a flight at 8.30. The kick-off was at 1.00 pm so that we had time for recovery after the match before flying back home in the early evening. However the plane was hit by a bird on its way over from Guernsey in the morning and this meant that we weren’t able to leave until just after midday. The kick-off was put back to 3pm –the ref and linesmen were also flying there and on the same plane – and we had to rush after the match to get to the Guernsey airport for the trip back to Gatwick. With all this it was perhaps no surprise that Guernsey scored a goal in the first 60 seconds and for a while they threatened more. But we held on and in the last minute of the first half Layton Schaaf was fouled in their penalty area and Steve Sargent stroked the ball home. And seconds later we were ahead as Sam Schaaf Earlyscored.in the second half Layton Schaaf was again fouled but this time outside the penalty area. It didn’t make any difference to Steve Sargent as he curled the ball home. More to come as Brad Curtis made it 4-1, though with the last kick of the game Guernsey scored a Ifsecond.you’ve had your memory jogged by any of the above then please contact me on lestermedcalf@btinternet.com.

After a promising first season finishing in fifth place, the club struggled against the professional opposition and, after finishing bottom in 1960-61, elected to re-join the Sussex County League.

the club finally moved from Victoria Park to the newly finished Hanbury Stadium which enabled it to join the Metropolitan League which included the reserve sides of professional clubs such as West Ham, Tottenham, Chelsea and Arsenal.

Unfortunately, promotion was denied following a nine-point deduction, and the championship awarded elsewhere due to an inadvertent offfield administrative error. The club however responded by winning the Premier Division again in the 2017-18 season and enjoyed a successful 2018-19 debut in the Isthmian League, finishing in a very respectable fifth position which qualified them for the play-offs at the first attempt. As well as achieving the club's highest ever finishing position in the non-league football pyramid, Shaun Saunders' squad also reached the final of the Sussex RUR Cup and the semifinals of the Sussex County Senior Cup, and this year will be looking to continue that success with promotion to the Premier Division.

The Division One title was won in 1969-70 and the League Cup in 1972-73. The club was also runners-up in 1974-75 but were relegated at the end of the 1979-80 season. The Division Two Cup was won in 1983-84 and, as runnersup in 1985-86, the club again gained promotion back into the senior division.

In 1988 the present name of Haywards Heath Town Football Club was adopted in its centennial year to reflect the 'town' status of Haywards Heath itself. Two successive relegations in 1992 and 1993 saw the club drop into the third division where they won the Division Three Cup in 2000-01. The following year, as Division Three runnersup, Heath were promoted back to Division Two but were again relegated after only one Theseason.Division Three Cup was won in 2008-09 however and in 2012-13 (again as runners-up), the club gained promotion back into Division OnTwo.the rebranding of the Sussex County League to the Southern Combination in 2015, the division was renamed Division One and the title was won in that first season, earning for Haywards Heath Town FC promotion to the Premier Division. The club finished top of the division the following season and were due to be promoted to the Isthmian League.
