state partners with federal agencies for funding  SEEKING TO TRULY IMPROVE WAI‘ANAE COAST TRAFFIC & WiFi This has been a busy summer so far. For example, predictably delayed traffic flow has always been a sore spot for all of us who call the Wai‘anae Coast our home. Through a committed effort by the City & County of Honolulu’s Department of Transportation Services to secure funds from the US DOT’s “Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability & Equity” (RAISE) Grant. I wanted to support and encourage generous funding of a project which will help to upgrade a state-of-theart real-time video monitoring of traffic flow with dynamic light synchronization. As a additional benefit, there is a proposal to provide free public WiFi in the many public locations along the coast. This should provide much needed improvements in both efficient traffic flow and easy internet access. (See Page 1 of this newsletter for more details)

A‘OHE PAU KA ‘IKE… I KA HĀLAU HO‘OKAHI  All Learning is not finished in just one school/manner of learning. We can all recognize that Wai‘anae Coast faces significant challenges in better connecting with our keiki early on within our educational system. Alternative cultural approaches have proven quite successful as well as enriching for those schools who have initatied and developed an ‘āina-based & culturally relevant curriculum focused on the “arts” such as hulaki‘i (puppetry), ‘oli (chanting), hula (dance), mele (song), ha‘i‘olelo (storytelling), and loina mo‘omeheu (cultural protocols). Both Representative Gates and myself are in full support for ongoing federal Dept. of Education’s funding for the Native Hawaiian Education Program in support of Kamaile Academy PCS’s efforts.
