HAPPY NEW YEAR HIJRAH 1432 TASK FORCE ON BLA SILVER JUBILEE AWARDS The Task Force met on 4 December 2010 to deliberate on the Silver Jubilee Awards, criteria, nomination forms, citation and format. It was chaired by Nellie Sunny, BLA President. Also present were Awg Hj Abu Bakar, Dyg Hjh Pusparaini, Pg Omarali, Dyg Hjh Rosnani, Awg Abu Hasrah. There will be Awards of Recognition and Long Service to mark 25th Silver Jubilee and to recognise those members who have contributed significantly to BLA and the development of the profession. 11 March 2011 marks BLA Silver Jubilee.

BRUNEI INFORMATION DEPARTMENT LIBRARY The Information Department was formed on 1 April 1952 and its main aim was to publish the Pelita Brunei and as a government mouthpiece by showing films and to spread messages and information to the public, maintain Reading Rooms and provide public address system. The Information Department is a government agency that went through many administrative changes in its existence since 1952. The first was in 1962 when the Radio Service and the Information Service merged to become a new department known as the Department of Broadcasting and Information. The second time was in 1975 when the Information Dpartment and Broadcasting split into two to become the Information Unit of the State Secretariat and the new Department of Radio Televisyen Brunei. Following this merger, four of the Reading Rooms of the Information Department were handed over and managed by Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Brunei The third time was in 1984 when the Information Department was placed under the Minsitry of Culture, Youth and Sports. The fourth time was in 1985 when the Information Department was joined with Radio Televisyen Brunei to become the Department of Broadcasting and Information. The fifth time was in 1991 when the Broadcasting and Information Department split yet again to form the Information Department as we know it today. Today, within the new Information Department building in Berakas which it occupied since 1993, is its library, which is conveniently located on the ground floor. The library serves mainly its own officers but is also available for public reference use. Its collection stands at 2,526 volumes. The Library is under the Research and Development Division. Among its collection are hard copies of Pelita Brunei from the earliest, government publications such as Government Gazettes, Laws of Brunei, compilation of Titah and Brunei Annual Reports. It also collects Information Department publications, ASEAN publications, serials and newspapers, newspaper clipping and staff training reports. There is a manual card catalogue. Librarians: Dyg Hjh Norsiah Hj Umar, Library Assistant Grade II, Dyg Hjh Umi Kalthom, Library Assistant Grade II, Milestones 1 April 1952 – Brunei Information Service formed. 1953- First Reading Room opened in Kuala Belait. 1954 – Kuala Belait Branch formed 1956 -Pelita Brunei published. 1961 –Dept of Broadcasing and Information formed by joining Information Dept Services and Radio Brunei . June 1975 – Information Dept split to form the Information Division of the State Secretariat. 1983 –Information Divison upgraded to become Information Dept.

1 Jan 1984 –Information Dept placed under Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sports. 1 Dec 1985 –Information Dept and RTB joined to become Dept of Broadcasting and Information. 20 Dec 1986 - Dept of Broadcasting and Information placed under PMO. 1 Mar 1991 - Dept of Broadcasting and Information split and known as Information Dept under PMO. 1 April 2002 –Golden Jubilee anniversary of Information Dept. 19 July 2008 –Launch of Pelite-on-line and twice weekly Pelita Brunei.

Laos

In 1929 a Pali School was established by Prince Phetsarath to address the needs of monks who wanted to teach Pali. A palm leaf manuscript library known as the Phouthapanditsapha was established under the school and this is the first known library in Vientiane In early 1940s a municipal library was opened at Ban Anou in central Vientiane under the French colonial era. In 1956 three years after independence this branch library became the Vientiane General Library under the Ministry of Education of the Royal Lao Government functioning thereafter mainly as a resource for local schools in 1965 the Ministry of Justice designated the National Library within the Directorate of National Library, National Museum and Archaeology of the Ministry of Education, Fine Arts, Sports and Youth Rules and Responsibilities of the National Library (1989) approved by the Ministry of Information and Culture

In 1967 renamed as the National Library Originated in 1887 as the Museo-Biblioteca de Filipinas Inaugurated in 1891 Philippine Public Library created under Act No. 1849 of 3 June 1908 by Philippines Assembly Library renamed the Philippine Library under Act No. 1935 of 20 May 1909 Act No. 2572 of January 31, 1918 merged the Library with two other offices - the Executive Bureau's Division of Archives, Patents, Copyrights and Trademarks and the Law Library of the Philippine Assembly - to be named The Philippine Library and Museums Act No. 3477 of 7 December 1928 separated the Museum from the Library, the one becoming the National Museum, the other The National Library Executive Order No. 94, series 1947 changed the name of the Library to Bureau of Public Libraries Name reverted to the National Library under the Republic Act No. 3873 of 18 June 1964

Singapore

The National Library is an attached agency of the National Commision for Culture and the Arts of the Office of the President by Executive Order No 80 of 5 March 1999 In 1823 first librarian of the Singapore Institution (now Raffles Institution) appointed The Singapore Library was formed and officially opened on 22 January 1845 and a subscription library With the passing of a resolution by the Legislative Council in 1873, a local museum was founded.

from 16 July 1874, the Singapore Library became known as the Raffles Library and Museum. On 12 October 1887, the Governor of Singapore, Sir Frederick Weld, officially opened the new building of the Raffles Library and Museum. In 1908 it appointed its first Director. In 1923 renamed Hullett Memorial Library The Raffles Library and Museum was renamed the Syonan Hakubutsu Kan during the Japanese Occupation in 1942. It reopened 1 Dec 1945. On 1 April 1958, The Raffles National Library Ordinance (No. 31 of 1957) enabled the National Library to provide a free public service for residents in Singapore and instituted the library to be the depository library for all publications printed and published in Singapore.

Thailand

Vietnam
