REGIONAL CONFERENCE ON LIBRARIES, ARCHIVES AND MUSEUMS Access and Collaboration: Search and Discovery Through Innovative Technologies 29 Nov – 2 Dec 2011, Brunei Darussalam
RESOLUTION We, the participants of the Regional Conference on Libraries, Archives and Museums with the theme ‘Access and Collaboration: Search and Discovery Through Innovative Technologies’ organised by the Brunei Darussalam Library Association from 29 November to 2 December 2011 in Brunei Darussalam in conjunction with its Silver Jubilee, resolve that libraries, archives and museums though they are quite distinct in nature, have a commonality as they serve the same clientele which are information and knowledge seekers and they should complement each other. Acknowledging that: The transformation of libraries brought about by the advent of new technologies requires librarians and information professionals to rebrand the profession and change and learn how to engage with the users, to stay relevant. Librarians and information professionals should be skilled at discovering and handling information, embrace and harness the new technologies as tools to help them deliver information and services more effectively and to use social media platforms to add value to their services and products. Therefore, it is hereby resolved that we: 1.
Call for the creation for a national reference centre to facilitate research activities, to enrich local history research resources and increase local scholarly imprints
2.
Call for the need to have a Brunei Darussalam Library Policy encompassing libraries, information repositories and cultural heritage institutions, as knowledge is the basis of a nation’s life
3.
Stress the need to formulate a Brunei Darussalam Library Qualification Framework to regulate the quality of professional librarians and information professionals and to make the training of librarians and information professionals compulsory and the role of the profession be recognised accordingly.
4.
Affirm for the Brunei Darussalam Library Association to be represented in the planning of policy decisions involving education and learning and ICT
5.
Stress the need for libraries and information repositories to stay relevant by creating borderless access to information and the rich collections kept in libraries, archives and museums for knowledge and learning.
6.
Promote smart partnership with the Government, private sectors and ICT industry in making information and knowledge in an enabling environment for capacity building and a knowledge based society.
We reaffirm our commitment as librarians, information handlers and providers to make information and knowledge as our core business and to support the national aspirations of Brunei
Darussalam in education, culture, preservation and conservation of national heritage and making them accessible for research and study.
Adopted on 2 December 2011 in Brunei Darussalam
