Overview What is Digitization? Potential Digital Assets. Importance of Digitization. Difficulties of digitization.
What is Digitization? ď‚´ Cultural institutions such as museums, libraries, archives, and historical societies house remarkable collections of cultural artifacts. ď‚´ responsibility of these institutions to preserve, protect and provide responsible stewardship for the materials, and to the best of their ability, provide continued long-term access. ď‚´ The process of converting analogue or physical objects and documents into digital formats.
Potential Digital Assets Photographs (Museum Collection, events and programs) Publications, Examination Paper, Theses, Conference Proceedings,
Journals Library resources Manuscripts, Books, Letters, Archives Many more..
UBD: Bruneiana Digital Collection Provides rich primary sources of digitized information for scholarly research and learning. Organize and manage Brunei studies collection through the use of IT, Provide searchable Database on Information On Brunei Studies Collection, Making UBD as the center for local Information resources.
Their collection includes: Books, examination papers, Manuscripts, Newspaper articles, Theses, Conference proceedings and Journals. ITB
ď‚´Would Digitization Destroy Libraries?
Importance of Digitization. It offers us with a lot of unique advantages. More and expanded accessibility of Information Anyone, anywhere, anytime. Possibility of full text searching.
Preservation of materials Extend the life of a material (creating surrogate) It also enable large number access of user to special or unique collection, that normally can only be viewed on site. In return the library would not only provide a great service but also increasing utility to its collection.
Reduce physical records (more space) Librarians would be able to develop themselves by gaining new skills, knowledge and expertise. Through these, they would become an “asset” to the library and they could also use their newly gained expertise by sharing them with other institutions.
Difficulties of Digitization Technological obsolescence
Malfunctions
Constant change of hardware and software
Not yet a form of long term preservation- technology change overtime
High Cost and Time consuming
Largest cost in research and time invested in creation of metadata or organization of collections.
Required staff expertise
Selection of collections to be digitized
Rarely used or low demand items should not be selected for digital conversion-cost In time, resources and money is difficult to justified
Complete reliant on computers and stable internet connections.

What is Digitization?
Scanning = digitisation = digital capture
ANALOG information into DIGITAL formats or 0s and 1s.
Digitization the process of taking traditional library materials that are in form of books and papers and converting them to the electronic form where they can be stored and manipulated by a computer.
Born Digital vs Digitized Born Digital
Digitized
The object started its existence in digital form
Exists to record and present characteristics of some physical object
Do not serve as surrogates (replacement) for physical objects, these born digital objects are originals
Care about the fidelity (accuracy) of a digitized copy to an original
What can be digitized?
Digitization devices
Will Digitization Destroy Libraries?
Why Digitisation? Increase access to resources
To preserve the documents
improvement of the efficiency of information search mechanisms
Benefits of Digitization to the libraries • Enhanced intellectual control • Anywhere at any time • Participation to digitization project
Effects of Digitization on the libraries: Technology • Expensive machines • The useful life of today ’s digital media • Type and format of media. • Changes in applications and operating systems • Reliant on computer and Internet connections
Effects of Digitization on the libraries: Librarian’s perspectives • Time consuming • Not be seen as a replacement for the original piece • Funding • Digital Divide is still there • Resist to change • Copyright issues • Quality of content • Open access
Digitization is not enough • Extracted content • You may now have thousands of files: storing: file naming, metadata assignment • Add context through metadata

Quality Assurance • • • •
Originality Method employed Skills The degree to which the digital copy has adequately “sampled” the original analogue
What to say The goal of the library has not changed, to deliver the right information to the right person at the right time
Conclusion • Digitization is changing the ways in which collections are used and accessed. • However, the issues of digitization still on going through different perspectives especially on libraries • The question we should be asking, therefore, are digital collections would be the most useful to the readers?
