RBPF's MUSEUM GALLERY
On 3 February 2009, the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) opened its very own Police Museum Gallery located at its headquarters in Gadong. RBAF was formed in 1921 and the opening of the museum gallery coincided with the 88th anniversary of RBPF. It was officiated by the RBPF Commissioner of Police, Pehin Datu Kerma Setia CP Dato Paduka Seri Zainuddin Jalani. In his welcoming address, the Chairman of RBPF Museum Organising Committee, Ag ACP Hj Majid Hj Awg Damit, said the establishment of the museum started in March 2003, with the appointment of the Museum Organising Committee made up of several senior officers and chaired by RBPF's director of Administration & Finance. From page 1 It received technical expertise from the Brunei Museums and the Brunei Darussalam History Centre. In addition the members of the Museum Organising Committee also attended courses and seminars on museology as well as study visits to the Royal Malaysian Police Force Museum and the Singapore Police Force Heritage Gallery. Among the museum's objectives are to ensure that RBPF's treasures will be kept and become a heritage for future generations. The museum will be a research centre and a place to keep valuable historical artifacts, whether acquired from groups or individuals who are willing to share their past experiences and priced possessions, allowing them to be exhibited at the gallery. PELITA BRUNEI NOW TRI-WEEKLY Pelita Brunei, the official newspaper of the Government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam will be publishing three times a week starting from this week, with the first Monday edition already out today. The move marks yet another milestone for the paper since it began publication on February 15, 1956. The Monday edition, which will sport a magenta-coloured dateline on the front page, is an addition to the existing Wednesday (Yellow) and Saturday (Blue) papers. Today’s edition of Pelita Brunei is published in view of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang DiPertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s 64th Birthday celebration. The newest edition was officially launched yesterday by the Deputy Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, Dato Paduka Awg Hj Abd Wahab bin Juned. The Director of the Information Department, Dr Hj Mohd Hadi bin Mohd Melayong in his remarks said “With the new Monday edition, we hope that Pelita Brunei will become more relevant and possess the integrity and competitiveness in the world of IT and modern media, as well as manage to acquire a place in the heart of the daily live in Brunei’s community. “With the move, Pelita Brunei will continue on to play a major role, as the official newspaper for the Government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, in disseminating information to the citizens and residents of the country, which has been lauded by Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien when Pelita Brunei was launched on 15th February 1956.” Go to page 5.

UBD LIBRARY VISIT TO LIBRARIES IN SABAH, MALAYSIA By Dyg Hjh Norleha Hj Mat Yassin,UBD A delegation from UBD Library comprising librarians, staff and their family members made an educational/working visit on a bus trip from Brunei Darussalam to four selected libraries in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. The twenty-six delegates headed by Awang Hj. Abdullah bin Haji Tahir, Head of Lending Services Division and Coordinator of the User Services, Universiti Brunei Darussalam Library started the visit from Wednesday 16 June 2010 until Saturday, 19 June 2010 to Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS); Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Sabah; Tun Haji Mohd. Fuad Stephens Borneo Research Library and Sabah State Library. The trip was aimed at strengthening ties within the libraries,to discuss issues of mutual interest, to learn more of the facilities, services and collection of the said libraries. Thursday 17 June 2010 morning -visit to Universiti Malaysia Sabah Library Dayang Rukiah Awang Amit, Chief Librarian welcomed and briefed the delegations and later a presentation on the services, collection and facilities of the UMS Library. This was followed by a guided tour around the library, especially the General Collection, Perdana Collection, Nobel Laureate Collection and Aseana +3 (Korea, Japan and China). The delegation visited UMS Chancellor building and toured the gallery/museum exhibition, IPMB Aquarium which exhibits some different types of fish, sea weeds and samples of corals reefs in Sabah. The delegations later had lunch hosted by UMS, whom coordinated the UBD Library’s visit. Thursday 17 June 2010 afternoon –visit to Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Sabah. The delegates were welcomed and briefed on UiTM Library by Encik Zulkifli Ismail, Deputy Chief Librarian of UiTM. Friday, 18th June 2010 morning -visit to Tun Haji Mohd. Fuad Stephens Borneo Research Library The visitors were welcomed and briefed about the library by Puan Zaiton Bakri, Chief Librarian. Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad’s book collection was mentioned throughout the presentation and a video presentation on the Yayasan Sabah Group. Friday, 18th June 2010 afternoon -visit to Sabah State Library The visitors were welcomed and briefed about their library. At each visit there was Q & A, followed by tour of the library sections. There were exchanges of gifts at the end of each visit. UBD Library wishes to thank UMS for hosting our visits and to all the libraries for their warm welcome and hospitality and for making our visits a fruitful one. Go to page 4

e-RESOURCES @MoE DIGITAL LIBRARY Universiti Brunei Darussalam Library participated in the Majlis Ilmu 2010 ‘Tamadun Melayu Bestari’ exhibition from 26-28 July 2010 at the International Convention Centre. They showcased the e-Resources@MoE portal under the VILIS Brunei project. It is accessible at http:eresources.moe.edu.bn or http://www.moe.edu.bn. It is an electronic academic resource digital library service launched on 25 Feb 2008, providing access to thousands of full-text e-resources of e-journals and reference sources for the teaching and learning community. The primary source is the digital Bruneiana Collection consisting of digitised books, exam papers, old manuscripts, newspaper clippings, thesis, UBD Conference Proceedings and UBD Journals.
From page 2 The Director of Information further said that “by publishing three times a week, Pelita Brunei would be able to present up-to-date news or news that has been obsolete after being published by other local media to the public. Dr Hj Mohd Hadi said the Information Department is also spreading information through its “Web Pelita” online at www.pelitabrunei.gov.bn. The initiative is one of the strategies to make sure that the department “plays its role in spreading government information to not only people in the country but also anywhere,” he added.

CONSAL REGIONAL PROJECT BLA is leading a CONSAL Regional Project entitled Islam in ASEAN: A Cultural Bibliography. The Working Committee is headed by Dk Sakdiah PH Omar and Awg Hj Abd Talip Hj Tassim while the participating insitutions are Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Brunei, Universiti Brunei Darussalam, Pusat Dakwah Islamiah, Brunei History Centre and Brunei Museum. This regional project will promote in depth understanding of Islam and for us to appreciate the splendours of Islamic culture and civilisation; to encourage CONSAL librarianship and invigorate interdispinary research activity and its publications among libararians and information professionals; to sustain networking and resource sharing as a CONSAL activity. The bibilography attempts to list materials found in books, newspapers, journals, thesis and conference papers. The aim of the publication is to produce an updated compilation of bibliographical entries of reference source materials on Islamic culture useful for researchers and scholars. The book will be launched at CONSAL XV Conference in 2012.
PRESERVING ACCESS TO DIGITAL INFORMATION (PADI) PADI : gateway to international digital preservation resources and to ICADS (IFLA-CDNL Alliance for Digital Strategies) Introduction The National Library of Australia's Preserving Access to Digital Information (PADI) initiative aims to provide mechanisms that will help to ensure that information in digital form is managed with appropriate consideration for preservation and future access. Its objectives are: 1. to facilitate the development of strategies and guidelines for the preservation of access to digital information; 2. to develop and maintain a web site for information and promotion purposes; 3. to actively identify and promote relevant activities; and 4. to provide a forum for cross-sectoral cooperation on activities promoting the preservation of access to digital information. The PADI web site is a subject gateway to digital preservation resources. It has an associated discussion list padiforum-l for the exchange of news and ideas about digital preservation issues. International Advisory Group An international advisory group has been established to provide advice and guidance for the PADI initiative. NEWSPAPERSG LAUNCHED An online archive of Singapore’s newspapers
NewspaperSG was officially launched on 28 January 2010 by NLB Singapore. With the launch, library patrons can search, browse and retrieve full-text news content from as many as 17 newspapers titles through the multimedia stations at the National Library Board’s (NLB) network of libraries. NewspaperSG (newspapers.nl.sg), an online service initiative of the National Library Singapore will also provide library patrons access to selected full text archived news content conveniently from the comfort of their homes through the Internet. The use of keyword searches in NewspaperSG represents a significant leap in timesavings for both general users and researchers as before the introduction of NewspaperSG, users could only access archived newspaper articles by searching through reels of microfilms manually.
