ACCIDENTALLY ON PURPOSE The term accidentally on purpose is defined as “apparently by accident but in fact intentionally”. We believe that many designers both new and experienced can relate to this term. The creative process is different for all designers but we can all agree that moments of inspiration can come to us at any time in different forms. The intention to create is indeed conscious, but the end form is never known at the outset. The journey to inspiration can only be described as occuring “Accidentally on Purpose”.

US AT BRUNEL Brunel University takes its inspiration from one of Britain’s foremost entrepreneurs, designers and engineers; Isambard Kingdom Brunel. As such industrial relevance is part of our DNA. As part of the College of Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences our courses have always reflected a strong technological approach combined with an emphasis on creative solutions expressed through digital media. Our original course, the BSc Multimedia Technology and Design degree began in 2000 and was one of the earliest university courses of its type in the UK. This later led to the establishment of a related degree BSc Broadcast Media Design and Technology in 2008. Today we continue to evolve in order to reflect the rapidly changing nature of the Creative Industries and the wider workplace. The current courses; BSc Digital Design and the BSc Visual Effects and Motion Graphics continue our legacy of providing cutting edge, industry-relevant education and skills.

8.

OUR COMMUNITY Under the leadership of elected students, Brunel Digital also embodies a student society that organises various social activities throughout the academic year. Brunel Digital is funded by the University with the purpose to foster activities that lie outside the curriculum. Both Undergraduate and Postgraduate students work together and are supported by staff members to drive a sense of camaraderie, togetherness and community. The range of activities that have taken place throughout the years includes film screenings, networking events, showcase events, Christmas parties and visits to neighbouring film studios (Pinewood Studios, Warner Brothers). At these events, it is quite common for staff and students to invite alumni, friends, students from other courses and more importantly people from the industry.

MATTHEW GIBBS

WIJNDERLUST

Digital Design BSc Knowing where in the world to visit is hard. Knowing where to find the best wine once you get there is even harder. Wijnderlust aims to solve those issues. LIAM DEAN

EMBARK

Digital Design BSc For my dissertation at Brunel University, I decided to design, brand and develop a progressive web application. Embark allows users to find locations nearby that are dog-friendly. The final artefact provides users with a vast selection of locations, an account to list favourites and multiple searching features. As the market for this artefact is limited, the development in HTML as a progressive web app allows for the experience to function on any device. Throughout my time at Brunel, I worked on multiple other Portfolio liam-dean.com

projects including an outfit creation application named Exhibit. The idea was to help users complete an outfit by taking a photo of your current clothes. Users can then select the type of

LinkedIn /in/liamdeandesign/

item they wished to purchase and AI assist would find a list of relevant, trendy products that match.

I also created a poster for a New York architecture exhibition at

info@liam-dean.com

the Flatiron building. This allowed me to experiment with layout, colour and typefaces within a graphics 360 campaign.

My last project at Brunel was the publication design and branding for the Accidentally on Purpose Brunel Digital Event.

AMOLAK SIRA

CLARITY

Digital Design BSc Today’s society is filled with anxiety and depression and a lot of this can be linked to smartphones and social media. Studies have shown that it can affect the individual’s mental health and lead to “Smartphone addiction”. So, what if it could be turned into something positive? The aim of Clarity is to help reduce anxiety and depression by helping people decrease the addiction to social media and give them the tools to help be more mindful with the assistance of an app and a smart watch. I found other ways of helping combining different methods. Clarity includes: - Breathe: Simple breathing exercise with water visuals; can be Portfolio amolaksira.com

used whilst walking or sitting. - Focus Timer: Practice being mindful in any situation. - Events: Attend mindful events.

LinkedIn Amolak Sira Email amolaksira25@hotmail.com

- Contact: Get help from organisations when you need it. - Progress: Keep track of how your mindful journey is going. TFL 360 Campaign Everyone hates their commute to work so helping people smile should be an aim for TFL. I looked at celebrities and their

quotes on life. Having the face bleed through the words can help people relate and give it power. House of Fraser – shopping experience The current experience is premium but lacks technological aspects. The creation of this app can work with the user to give them a more personal experience, learn from them, help them from beginning to end and give the overall experience a deeper feel.

TEMILOLUWA ADEDOYIN

LOCS

Digital Design BSc For my final year project, I have created an app that helps black women and men with afro hair find hairstylists, barbers and stores in their area. This app caters to their needs allowing them to search for hairstyles such as braids, faux locs and cornrows which cannot be done in most mainstream hair salons. My app also gives hairstylists and hair shops a chance to market themselves and drive business. One of the aims with my app was to promote hair positivity and help women and men find confidence in their hair maintenance. I took my project further by creating a 360-marketing campaign Email

which included posters and a 10 second advert.

temiadedoyin1@gmail.com Just over 3 years ago this course sparked my interest because LinkedIn /in/temiloluwa-adedoyin/

of the variety of creative projects I would be able to work on. I have developed a more in depth appreciation for design and my passion has grown. I have been able to use photography, graphic design, video production, 3D design etc. to illustrate my creative ideas. I have taken the lead in different projects including our Degree Show which has shown me how well I work in leadership roles. I am an energetic and determined student who is working towards becoming a Visual Designer or an Art Director in the future.

LAURENT DUNIENVILLE

ECHO

Digital Design BSc Hi, I’m Laurent! I’m an aspiring digital designer who’s looking for opportunities in visual design roles. I’ve got both design and development experience and I enjoy seeing a project through from ideation to deployment. My final year project consisted of the branding, design, and development of a geolocation based social platform. It took the form of an iOS mobile application that allowed users to place messages and content wherever they’d like in the world, and it allowed them to share these geolocation posts to either a specific recipient or the public as long as the intended Portfolio

recipient(s) would reach a specific radius of the post’s location.

www.lydigital.co.uk Another exciting project that took place this year was the live LinkedIn /in/laurent-dunienville/

brief with Karmarama, it was a UX/UI project that they were working on for their client OSN. OSN is a prominent TV provider for the MENA region and were in need of design solutions for

Email laurent_d@hotmail.co.uk

their sub brand ‘WAVO’, an on demand monthly subscription service. The live brief project saw us conceptualise and prototype a TV EPG that ‘suits the changing viewing habits of today’s audience’. The last project featured was my latest freelance project, Gogo Studio’s portfolio website. Gogo Studio is an architecture firm concerned with projects from residential refurbishments to commercial and mixed-use developments, and they needed a revamp for their portfolio. In this project I had offered a number high fidelity designs followed by the necessary development for the selected designs that would go on the website.

DANIEL GILL

WASTE NOT WANT NOT

Digital Design BSc In 2016, a survey undertaken by analytics vendor Chartbeat, examined articles from websites and print and discovered that the majority of readers scroll through only 50-60% of an article. Analytics like this provide an opportunity for brands to provide continual improvement of the online experience, one path of design which fuels my passion. On that note, here’s a bit about me and my love for all things digital. I have ambition for design, understanding when to push the creative boundaries and when to keep it simple. I enjoy seeing projects through to completion and a challenge. A good sense Portfolio danieljamesgill.co.uk LinkedIn /in/danieljamesgill/

of humour and working to tight deadlines are a few of my strengths. Within recent years, I worked with globally dominating companies such as GSK, assisting with the launch of GSK.com, GSK’s most important channel of communication. I managed

Email amolaksira25@hotmail.com

and maintained the website and their global social media channels; whilst simultaneously analysing and improving SEO and website governance scores across their website estate.

Mobile 07804228011

During my time at Brunel University, I’ve proudly established a digital repertoire including an application to combat food waste and improving user experience of poorly designed mobile applications. I have also constructed my own digital agency, focusing on digital engagement and branding; current clients include estate agents, pubs, restaurants, and couriers. Thank you for reading this far and I hope that we can work together in the future.

ELLIOT WHITE

SWIFT

Digital Design BSc Swift is a development of a sophisticated architecture of both design and functionality. In places something that is currently non-existent to the realm of reality. It provides users with the opportunity to explore undiscovered user experiences and practicality. Presently in today’s society, the internet thrives with zero competition. However Swift brings the opportunity of a new method of shopping, something that I felt needed changing. This is how Swift was introduced, and with right amount of research and user testing, could help make the idea into a proven possibility. Portfolio originalwhite.co.uk

At Swift we believe in developing a world full of opportunity and new experiences. That’s why we developed the new shopping experience SWIFT. Swift, the name of our proposed appliance,

LinkedIn /in/elliot-white-96880111b/

is a self-checkout trolley-basket, which makes the need for card formalities irrelevant. This is all made possible using the RFID reader. With vigorous trails we have now developed

AMY CRAIG-WOOD

SERENE IN THE CITY

Digital Design BSc City dwellers have an almost 40% increased risk of depression, over 20% more of anxiety, and double the risk of developing schizophrenia compared to people who live in the countryside. As someone who has grow up in the countryside always wanting to live in the city I found these statistics seriously off putting. Therefore, I have used this project to design a wellbeing application targeted at urban dwellers. This application, which I have named ‘Serene in the City’ encourages users to daily log their mood, notes, keep active by visiting their local parks and remember to complete their self care tasks. Portfolio craig-wood.com/amy/

To ensure this app provided features proven to benefit mental health I made sure to undergo extensive research. This

Email amy@craig-wood.com

included researching causes of mental health issues and ways of managing it, both generally and then specifically to urban environments. I also carried out a survey of 150 people to find

out how they manage their mental health on a day to day basis, also providing me with a list of tried and tested self-care tips. I then designed and tested a prototype of the application as well as developing the initial structure using React-Native. I now aim to finish developing the Serene app and launch it on the app stores over summer.

RADHIKA BHAYANI

MYRUNWAY

Digital Design BSc A final year undergraduate student at Brunel University studying Digital Design. I am passionate about all forms of visual communication as well as the belief that design should be simple, eloquent and intuitive. MyRunway - Your online outfit assistant. Trying to pull together an outfit can be frustrating and time consuming. People with busy lives would often struggle to find an outfit for particular events and occasions, requiring time and effort to browse on various clothing websites for the “perfect” outfit. SAMIRAH ALI

SNATCH’D

Digital Design BSc Snatch’d is a mobile application that revolutionises the retail shopping experience whilst offering comfort, pleasure and efficiency. It provides a solution for some of the many problems that are currently prevalent in retail: the two main issues being a high online return rate and lack of personalised service offline. Such issues were taken into consideration in order to develop and execute a meaningful project that in turn delivers an effective omni-channel experience. Email misssamirah@outlook.com

Snatch’d integrates a combination of the best tools available for online and offline shopping to enhance the experience currently available and create a platform where users can interchangeably combine both. The core value of the product is to allow consumers to find outfits that make them feel snatch’d time and time again by ensuring it’s easier to find products that compliment their body. This is primarily through allowing users to book retail fitting rooms in advance at a time that suits them, whereby the room is ready and awaiting with all their items. Users can also use the scan feature to browse products in-store and update their booking, completed seamlessly with the integration of the personal measurement feature to help find the best size match across various brands. Users can request further items within the fitting room and checkout within seconds on the spot when they have achieved their goal.

SOPHIE LAMBERT

FITECH

Digital Design BSc My main interest within this course has been designing applications and experiences for current and future technologies. One of which was my Final Year Project, Fitech. My final year project is the design and development of an IOS mobile application. The principle difference between my app and those already out there are the challenges, rewards and restriction features. The app gives the user a choice of challenges, examples of these are sports, workouts and healthy diet choices. Once Portfolio sophievlambert.co.uk

the user has selected and completed a challenge they earn points. These points can then be used in exchange for real life rewards, such as discounts and vouchers.

LinkedIn /in/sophie-lambert/

There is also an optional feature of technology restriction, where access is restricted to your smart devices such as

Email sophielambert@sky.com

televisions or games consoles until enough points have been earned. This is in the hope of increasing motivation, for example: your child cannot play on their games console until they have completed an hour of exercise first, or you cannot watch your favourite TV program until you’ve gone for that 30 minute walk. Users can also challenge their friends with choices such as ‘The first to reach 10,000 steps’ or ‘Who can earn the most points today’ with the winner earning points.

VERONICA PADOVAN

ACROPOLIS

Digital Design BSc For my final year project, I decided to design an application that allows people affected by visual impairments to experience art through sound. I first discovered the field of audio descriptions through a friend who was studying to become a translator, and it fascinated me straight away. I thought it would be great if there was a platform where all the work being done in aid of people with VIs could be collected and accessed easily. I have always been an art lover myself and I think it’s important that everyone has a chance of experiencing it. Whilst working on this project I met so many amazing individuals who were happy to share with me their experiences with technology as partially Portfolio veronicapadovan.com LinkedIn Veronica Padovan

sighted users, and it was really inspiring to hear how my app could truly benefit people’s lives. What I enjoyed the most in this course was to learn about branding and UX design, which are fields I would like to explore further in my career. Also, my part-time job in digital

marketing has allowed me to apply many of the skills learned at

RAUL-PETRU TRIPON

ANSWEAR

Digital Design BSc A highly motivated and hardworking individual, passionate about digital design and movies. I express myself through everything I create, and as a designer, I think that this is very important. As of the four examples of my work, I chose the four that I enjoyed doing the most. For the first one, I created the branding for ‘Inspire Learning Centre’, and using a mockup, the four chosen colours are highlighted. The task for the next project, ‘BookShelf’, was to create the designs for a mobile application, and as I am very passionate about books, I chose to create a reading application, that would automatically play a previously selected playlist for the user, while reading. The next project, ‘Lost’, was a 360 marketing campaign for a movie. I created the plot and the main posters, displaying it using mockups in a variety of places. The last project is my final year project, ‘Answear’. The purpose of this application is to be more than just a regular clothing store, it wishes to resolve a much bigger problem that users have, which is to suggest outfits, analysing the user’s face type and taking into consideration the weather conditions from that day.

Digital Design BSc An undergraduate student at Brunel University London, I am pursing my passion for digital arts and graphic design. Leaving Taiwan to London gave me a big challenge to be adaptable, and my sense of humour and strength helped me to perform outside of my comfort zone. My final year project is making an elderly friendly app. This project aims to develop an easy to use and intuitive online shopping application for the elderly population, which can improve the elderly’s online shopping experience and raise the learning motivation about the technology. I was the sound recordist in the production. When edit the film, I used Adobe Premiere Pro to arrange my footages, used Adobe Audition to edit sound and After Effect to make the hologram effect. The picture was taken with Canon 60D and EF-S 18-135mm lens in Tokyo, Japan. I adjusted the white balance to have cooler colour and used long exposure to make the lake looks calm. Actually, it was very noisy when shooting but the picture looks very peaceful.

OPERATION: CLIMATE

Digital Design BSc I’m Michael and the projects I have shown are mainly 3D Animation, with the use of modelling, visual effects, and motion capture. I have used Autodesk Maya for around a year and what you see is the result of this. The first two pages are the results of my animation, consisting of a World War II announcement trailer for a concept game. The next consists of the first 3D Animation project I undertook where I had the freedom to create any type of boat, thus, I decided to go with a Viking longboat which was influenced by the TV show. The last page is the motion capture project done with the use Portfolio truemjc.wixsite.com/portfolio

VFX & Motion Graphics BSc I am Christian O’Brien, an aspiring VFX artist. I am particularly interested in working in Virtual Reality. I believe VR provides a unique user experience which could revolutionize the way we experience media. My portfolio demonstrates the skills I have learned at Brunel over the past three years to be useful in Virtual Reality projects. My final year project is a short virtual reality horror film entitled No Escape. The piece runs for ninety seconds, showcasing the haunting of a young man’s living space. Despite being in different industries, the common theme has been to either be part of the design team from a project’s inception or receive a raw brief from clients who seek a creative input and development. Over the years it became clear that fluency in different media Portfolio Osamahalrasbi.tumblr.com

3D ENVIRONMENT

Advanced Multimedia Design & 3D Technologies MSc Inspiration behind this 3D environment is a business idea that is being developed for a few years. The product of interest is herbal extracted oils for the skin and specifically face where

the herbs come from Bulgaria in Eastern Europe, the home of over seven hundred medicinal herbs known to science. This small but extremely diverse land is the origin of some of the most beneficial plants to the human skin in Europe and likely the world. This environment represents the hybrid nature of the product combining science and holistic approach through design direction. Bees are a major inspiration to the brand and therefore this project not only because it consists in the name of the business but because as Albert Einstein has said if bees die, humanity will have five years before following the same tragic path. Hexagon shapes are also noticeable in the overall scene as this is what beehives are mainly shaped like. As seen in the Bee Green Cosmetics brand description below the mission statement is holistic approach to beauty and lifestyle therefore protecting Nature is in the root of the design ideas behind the BGC Laboratory. The futuristic oil extraction unit is solely powered by solar systems and the lighting of the scene is warm and subtle inspired by recycled light and sustainable light sourcing. Green tinted glass with UV protection is behind the coloured glass the extraction unit is made for. In a laboratory environment, tinted glass, mainly green or blue, is used to store oil extracts to give the substance longer shelf life and protect from any UV lighting natural sunlight consists of. The futuristic glass units are shaped like pipettes that are a main aspect of laboratory equipment.
