Aaron Williams @itsz_a_a_ron behance.net/aaronwilliams19

My name is Aaron Williams, and I am a final year digital design student who has had a creative eye from very young. I have always been into creative subjects and enjoyed experimenting my ideas through design. I am constantly improving on my design ideas and pursuing different paths I have not taken before, such as app design which I have focused on for my final year project is something I am new too and have not designed an app before and through experiences like this I have grown in my knowledge, understanding and ability to design more creative products.

My aspirations once I have finished university is to work for a big media company like SKY or BBC. I also like to use my skills to help others when and where I can and put myself out there to be of good service to those who need it. With the projects I create I always aspire to create something brand new which has not been done before something unique and eye catching.

Adam Al-Baali @al_baali linkedin.com/in/adam-al-baali-810735190/

I’m Adam, a visual and sound designer based in London. I fell in love with sound, music and design at a young age and realised that I’m obsessed with all things creative. My passion resides within anything that challenges my creativity and discipline. I am always looking for more creative ways to express myself. My skillset revolves around covering as many different design sectors as possible while primarily focusing on UI/UX and Sound Design and Engineering.

Consulta is a medical consultation mobile app. It focuses on being an all in one experience, providing the user with an exclusive and linear perience. The app aims to minimise and trivialise the remote consultation process by cutting down the need to use third-party tools and software’s. Beside providing an all-in-one experience, Consulta also works hand in hand with the NHS services, providing a more grounded and in-touch service, rather than relying on online doctors, forums and such.

Bella Norman @portfoliobeya

My first project is entitled Postcode, Postcode is an arts and culture magazine that explores different areas of West London. I was born and raised in West London and I come from an area called Ladbroke Grove. I feel where I was raised shaped my identity as a person therefore I’m very passionate about where I come from and I felt that the best way to conclude my skillset and experience in university was to dedicate a project to something that meant a lot to me. My second project highlights a graphic assignment where I have designed my own graphic t-shirts.

Page 14

The name of the brand is Retrograde and is inspired by retro and in current graphic trends. From my original logo design, I managed to print out a couple of t-shirts to further experiment my marketing paths. My third project was from a marketing module where I had to fuse 2 separate brands together to create a campaign. I chose American Apparel and Battersea Cats and Dogs Home to highlight the use of domestic animals within the fashion industry.

Brandi Akpobome @brandi_akpobome brandi.akpobome.myportfolio.com/

Hi! My name is Eseophe Edidiong Brandi Akpobome, but you can call me Brandi. I am a digital designer with a love for graphic design, motion graphics and promotional & marketing campaigns. My projects throughout the course have reflected me, my hobbies and my interests with themes such as rugby, music, fashion, food and Nigerian culture. My final year project was a 360° promotional campaign for a rugby 7s festival. Like many of my other projects, I plan to develop this festival into a successful business post-graduation.

Some of the most valuable skills that I’ve picked up during the course include the ability to manage projects, both individually and with a team, and how to adapt my approach in new and unexpected situations. In my future work, I plan to become a serial entrepreneur, developing my projects from the course and incorporating all the skills I have picked up along the way to create a chain of successful businesses.

Francesca Roa @francesca__roa https://francescaroa.myportfolio.com

Over the past three years at Brunel University as a Digital Design student, I got the chance to work on several exciting projects and have developed a diverse set of skills. To give you an insight into my work, I have chosen some of my university modules, personal work and final year project. Chez Moi was a personal branding and advertising project where I created a conceptual floating restaurant on the River Thames. For the branding, I mainly used watercolours to create a connection with the concept and the visual identity.

Page 18

At the top of the facing page, I have included some artefacts from my final year project Phoenix, a 360º marketing campaign. This project aimed to raise awareness and improve the trends of unhealthy food often chosen in takeaway meals among young adults. To find out more about Phoenix take a look at my Case Study . Below are some university projects I have produced during the year based on UI/UX design and motion design in which I learnt new software and gained new skills.

Francesco Ricci @riccigraphics riccigraphics.net

My project was to come up with the best way for people to deal with post-op recovery. I found that the health services have more care for the patients recovering in the hospital and not for the one recovering home. Bee Well app would help those with these issues and form communities which will help others alongside these groups. They will also receive guidance from healthcare professionals. On top of giving the person going through post-op recovery everything they need to help them through their daily routine at their fingertips, Bee Well set up rehab exercise plans to

Page 20

cover the key stages of recovery after surgery. Whether it’s medications, measurements or exercise, Bee Well helps the patient stay in control of their health. Matching their treatment, giving them the right information at the right time, while tracking and monitoring their progress. Besides the design of a prototype application for this service, a branding and marketing strategy, including billboards and user-friendly illustrations, have been developed so that the app can easily reach potential users.

The illustrations to the left are conceptual pieces for a fantasy themed, Retro-style video game I’m working on. The large yellow piece is intended to be the game’s front cover art. The blue and orange piece would feature within the game’s manual.

The four images to the right are a sample of some 3D and other illustrative stuff I’ve done. Though my recent art is more game focused I enjoy trying out other things. The bottom two are magazine covers for an imaginary art publication. Top right was for a book paying homage to horror film classics. Top left was made to promote a data analytics blog.

Hi my name is James and I am a final year student. My main skills are in Front-End development and UI. For my final year project I produced a fully functioning web app called Endurance.

I have always had a great interest in design as a whole, Brunel University allowed me to explore that. It saddens me to think that my University life is coming to an end, but I am excited for what the future may hold so bring it on.

Essentially it is a social media fitness app aimed at motivating those who may have low self-esteem or confidence through a friendly user interface and welcoming community. I created this project to develop and also demonstrate my skills.

For my Final Year Project I branded and marketed my own cold-pressed juice brand ‘To The Root’. Using research and surveys aimed at my target audience of 18-34 year-olds and more, I explored their opinions on what they felt the current market was lacking and, what they wanted to see more of. My findings led me to develop a unique, creative and sustainable cold-pressed juice brand, which is organically powered and consumer focused. To stand out amongst the competition the brand has four unique selling points. These are: the use of wonky produce, the product being 100%

sustainable, creatively organic and product transparency. During the development of my artefacts, the core priority was to convey these selling points, in the three cold pressed juice combinations offered to supermarket consumers. Organic shapes and produce are used throughout the brand and marketing assets. Representing the use of “wonky” fruit and vegetables that are disposed by supermarkets in accordance with the strict visual criteria on fresh produce to create our cold-pressed juices. As well as making healthy living inviting, fun and accessible.

Hi, my name is Julien. I am a 21-year-old student at Brunel University studying Digital Design. I am mainly interested in UX/UI but enjoy all types of design, including 3D design, motion graphics and print graphics. I have a keen interest in the way artwork and designs are put together and developed to create the final product. For my final year project, I chose to work with a live client to design a brand and mobile app for a business idea that my client had. This idea was a holiday property booking app but with more security and management from “Petadesk

Property”, the clients’ business name. A 360 campaign was also created to help promote the brand and the services it provides. In the future, I hope to develop my skills in UX/UI and move forward with my client’s business by developing the app and making it available for the public. I hope to also create digital marketing material for more clients, allowing me to network and gain more experience in the digital marketing and design industry.

This year, I am proud to present the projects that highlight my capabilities for an evolving industry. From an augmented reality children’s reading app to a product branding/ marketing campaign, I have taken the opportunity to use emerging technology to ideate, design and prototype the futuristic concepts into products. In addition, I am grateful to have volunteered as VR/AR manager for

Maliha Rhemtulla

I’m a Digital Design student with a creative and fun approach to creating digital products. My passion for the environment led me to create a Final Year Project which aimed to provide a platform for children to build awareness of key environmental problems, including practical and interactive ways to make changes for the better.

This is Samson - a squirrel that I modelled, rigged and animated. He is the lead character in an animated series. Samson’s goal is to inspire a generation of children to integrate

eco-friendly practices in their daily life, and become a generation that cultivates real environmental change. The animation is bright, vibrant, and full of imagery that showcases nature with and without the detrimental effects of human processes such as greenhouse gas emission and littering. Alongside the animation, I designed a colouring book and colouring pencils under the umbrella brand, Ecotopia. This functions to maintain the interest and investment of my target age group. I also have outlined future directions for this project to grow, to involve a wider audience and with a more ambitious future.

Like many young people, I was not sure what to do in my adult life. But after two years of constant searching and testing, I found myself in Digital Design BSc course here at Brunel University. I fell in love with graphic design and 3D modelling throughout these three years, and now with the small steps, I am decisively moving towards becoming a designer and modeller. As for my final year project, I decided to create a short 3D animation called ‘Creation of New Life’. The main idea behind this animation is to convey a message to children about people’s loneliness and how much effort a

Page 38

person needs to put in to have a friend. To create this short animation, I used a 3D production pipeline, which allowed me to test myself in roles like cinematography, modelling, texturing, lighting and many more. The experience that I gained with this project allowed me to be even more passionate and persistent about pursuing my career as a graphic designer and 3D modeller.

My Final Major Project titled ‘Projection Mapping for

Promotion’ led me to create a Projection Mapped Christmas Tree for use in a department store. The proposed concept advertises six areas within the store to drive customers around the shop, but also entertain and replace traditional Christmas decorations with a flexible digital solution. I created three of these department clips and physically projected all visuals onto a 3D tree I made. I also produced a short 2-minute video to pitch my concept to stores, detailing why this concept would be successful within a department store and explaining the benefits of a digital replacement for a standard Christmas tree.

This is done with a particular set of tools only available to the engineer.

My aim of this project is to recreate the Safe Isolation procedure as a serious game, so it becomes an accessible option for students who are learning online or E-learning. This type of teaching utilises the practicality of workshops as well as the ability to remote learn from the comfort of their own space. I became involved with creating mockups, branding, designs, and 360 campaigns for imaginary brands. I dived into UX by creating personas, user journeys and experience maps to study target

audiences. Progressively, I began to build increasingly complex front-end projects that varied from simple responsive sites to applications that incorporated complex logic. I created data visualisations with JavaScript, queried server databases with PHP, and wrote Python scripts to automate tasks. All of the above I was able to apply during my gap year, where I went on to complete an eight-week internship in marketing and a full placement year as a junior web developer. Hi, I’m Yash and I am an MSc Digital Design and Branding student at Brunel University. I live in London and basically from Mumbai, India. My course has taught me how to think creatively and create designs that comply with the need of the brand. I build clean, appealing, and functional designs which comply with the latest industry trends. But that’s just a part of it. Design is my passion. It’s my roller-coaster. It’s something I do before going to bed, and something I can’t wait to do in the mornings. Without it, my world would be black and white.”

I am proudly sharing Logo illustrations, Packaging designs, and Social Media Creatives I have designed for startups and corporate brands, and global organizations. Thank You!

Keep It Brief Brand

What is Keep It Brief? Keep It Brief is the brand for the Brunel Digital 2021 Degree Show. Keep It Brief looks to revitalise our creative world. Let’s bring things back up to speed in a world on-hold, inspire resilience, show our boldness, and spark collaboration.

Keep It Brief

Branding 2020 brought with it some of the most challenging times people have had to experience for decades. Our fast-moving world ground to a halt in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, affecting everyone’s lives and livelihoods. The creative industries has been hit hard, with our way of working dramatically shifting and slowing down. Students studying in the creative industries too have found themselves suffering from the effects of the pandemic, with their education moved online where time seems to have changed as the days merge into one another. Creatives have experienced setbacks throughout the year, with fewer jobs available, and less chances to work with each other. We want to come back from the hardships of the pandemic and cope with the stresses it brings, inspiring resilience in ourselves and others through our 2021 brand, and tackle any challenge we, as creatives, may face. In a year where people have been stuck in their homes, now is the time more than ever to find ways to express ourselves, and stand out from the crowd. Our brand this year is bold, as we look to express ourselves to the fullest, taking risks where others may not. Whilst we may have been forced apart, this has not stopped people around the world in many industries finding ways to work together remotely, and this is very true for our team. Through collaboration, we can revitalise our creative energy, and support those around us socially and professionally. For 2021, Brunel Digital looks to revitalise our creative world. Let’s bring things back up to speed in a world on-hold, inspire resilience, show our boldness, and spark collaboration.

Acumin - Bold, Semi-Bold, Regular

Our primary typeface is Mullingar, a serif typeface inspired by old style advertisements and sign painting culture, with a modern twist. Characterised by sharp edges and smooth curves, the typeface allows the brand to keep a modern yet elegant look and feel. The typeface is available in six styles (Regular, Bold, Light, plus Slanted in each version) which gives us plenty of options when designing. Our secondary typeface is Acumin, a versatile sansserif typeface family that perfectly contrasts Mullingar. Characterised by its solid neo-grotesque style, it performs beautifully at display and text sizes. The typeface is available in a large variety of styles, however, the brand only makes use of the standard Acumin Pro (not condensed or wide).

Brand Launch Video The brand launch video that we produced was all about showcasing the style and themes of the brand that we created. This year, animation was a large part of the brand and it was important to show that in the video. As a collaborative project between Daniel Bewsher and Tom Merry, two of our team members, it was an exercise in the possibilities of the brand. Utilising our colour palette and typography, it is a succinct yet detailed explanation of what our brand stands for.

2021 In order to show off the vast range of work that can be expected from students on the course, we drafted a number of students from different years on the course to design frames in different styles for the build up of the logo. This breaks away from the overall branding of the piece and shows more of the creative and interesting work that the students can create.

Introduction The Brunel Digital Society provides students with extra curricular activities, society events and more throughout the year. The next few pages show all the events from the year.

Keep It Brief

Brunel Digital Society Brunel Digital is a society dedicated to championing Creative Talent here at Brunel. Whether from Digital Media or the wider university, our members are a welcoming and inclusive bunch of creatives, driven and hungry for more. From digital to print, from 3D to motion, from film to animation, from XR to coding, we champion it all. Every year, we continue to grow, learn and change. Lockdown has been tough, for everyone, so this year, we made sure to adapt to the changing digital landscape. Socials went virtual. Prizes were sent via mail. Industry talks ran and were attended from bedrooms and offices across the world. Just like the Degree Show, we adapted and this book shows it. Thanks to the committee for all their hard work this year and thanks to the degree show team and faculty for supporting us too. James Wilson Chair of the Brunel Digital Society

International Woman’s Day Event

2021

Leading up to the event, I managed to be on the board for the society’s branding team where this year’s branding was strong and inclusive in style to champion women of all ages and demographics in the creative industry. The event itself was a splendid and successful one. I have gained a lot of realistic industry stories and experiences from all the panellists. This year’s panellists were very diverse, all came from different walks of life. A lot of topics were covered throughout the hours of the event- from observing the work done by the Brunel students in the creative discipline to learning the skills to negotiate opportunities by the speakers in the industry. I thoroughly enjoyed hosting the event this year.

Nayli Nazahatuhisamu – International Woman’s Day Host

International Women’s Day may have been a day that I usually glossed over, it’s sometimes easy to forget how far we’ve come. However, neither I nor any of the people who attended and intently listened, will easily understate its importance again. Evidently, in a Brunel Digital event the guests and answers will be geared towards those in creative fields, but the insight that all of the guests offered this year is one applicable to all walks of life. It was wonderful to see how many people had showed up to listen, to collaborate with the Brunel Digital team in the event’s organisation and it was wonderful to hear so much from creatives with such distinct career paths.

Matilde Norbrega – International Woman’s Day Host

It was a privilege to be invited to the 2021 International Women’s Day panel. The students of Brunel hosted a fantastic event and I was blown away by the skill and passion demonstrated by the female students who showcased their current project work. It was inspiring to hear from other guests across multiple sectors and to debate some of the key conversation points surroundings equality and diversity in our fantastic industry.

Small and Start Up Business Branding Industry requirements and student needs have helped evolve this second year module, Applied Media Aesthetics, into what it is today. In collaboration with Co-Innovate, our second year undergraduate students are helping small and startup businesses develop.

In collaboration with Brunel Co-Innovate and live businesses, second year digital media students were tasked with delivering high quality digital assets for businesses to use in a real context. This year, four businesses worked with Digital Media and provided the students with a range of source materials including Branding, Website Design, Mobile App Design, Digital Marketing / Social Media Platforms, Direct Marketing, Product Packaging Design, Product Photography and Promo Videos. Their fantastic outcomes are shown here. Rakesh Mohun - Lecturer & Studio Manager at Brunel University

Jointly funded by Brunel University and the European Regional Development Fund, Co-Innovate provides innovative support to London SMEs. With Co-Innovate’s help, eight business-briefs were selected, enabling Digital Media students to sharpen their creative design skills while working on the different business requirements.

Business requirement • Branding • Website and Mobile App Design • Digital Marketing/ Social Media platform • Direct Marketing • Photography • Product Packaging Design

In collaboration with Co-Innovate and businesses I supervised students on several of the live briefs, and it was a very satisfying experience, getting students involved with industry related challenges. I believe students strongly benefited from the experience and learning real-life skills and engaging with actual clients. Towards the end of the projects, you could see a real sense of achievement in the quality of work, and personal and professional growth in the students. The experience and input were very much appreciated by our industry clients. Alan Mannion - Lecturer at Brunel University Our Digital Design students have collaborated with industry as part of their second-year studies. The opportunity for students to deliver projects for live briefs from businesses is invaluable, and provides an immersive experience. Their portfolios have received a major boost, and in exchange, businesses gain valuable design work. We look forward to working with Co-Innovate further, as they introduce new projects for the 2021/22 academic year.

During the second term students are required to form groups of five, select the business they wish to work on and based on their strengths, each student gets to choose which business requirement they wish to fulfill.

Ubran Community Working with local people to create, inspire, build new opportunities for the community.

The logo design we chose for the APP was bold, fresh and modern, exactly what we wanted and the attention to detail in the APP design and wireframe had our team saying “wow”. I pushed and pushed and the students, who probably thought I was a crazy lady at times; but this was an opportunity I was excited about. I wanted to squeeze every ounce of creativity they had and challenge them to really think outside the box. We saw this as their baby as much as ours and truly wanted the chosen group to see their vision come to life. We kept absolutely everything, which is testament to their incredible work. At times it was challenging managing a busy charity during a pandemic and giving the students my full attention, however Rakesh and Rasa and Co-innovate team made the whole process a lot easier. I call this project a ‘call and answer’ I called and the team answered. Would I do it again? Absolutely! Rasheeda Graham - Chief Executive Officer Making the brand identity for Kings Cross Squared (KX2) was an exceptional opportunity, as I acquired the skill of working with a client. This was a group project amongst my team and myself, in which we all co-operated by bouncing off creative ideas for the fields we were in. In the end, we all created phenomenal work due to the regular meetings between the client and ourselves.

Furthermore, KX2 provided the opportunity for me to create a brand identity, which was going to make a positive change in people’s daily lives. The client provided critical alterations regularly, which formed the best brand aesthetic, according to their specifications.

It also gave me valuable experience in dealing with a modern day business, including communicating and collaborating with Cadeera regularly, and conforming to the clients business requirements, in a similar environment you would see in industry. On behalf Belgrave Sew Creative. I would like to thank everyone who were involved in the Co-Innovate Journey. When Taz Hossain first told me about the opportunity for small businesses to work with the Brunel students. I was happy and worried at same time, I though there is no way I could do this. He assured me that I can do it, he was a great help to me. My first meeting with Rakesh, he explained what the program involved, what is expected of me, and what is expected of the students. His calming voice reassured me that I can do this. The challenge for the students were to design a Website, Rebranding, Digital Marketing, Social Media, and ecommerce ready. The students took on the challenge. I didn’t know what to expect from the student, but after a couple of meetings I felt relax. The student work in a collaborating way to get the design done. My experience working with the students were very positive. Every 2 weeks we meet up on zoom to exchange thoughts and results. If a design or colour needed to be changed the students would do whatever it takes to get the design as requested. Now the design has finished, I can use it when I am ready. Short Documentary It was a pleasure to be invited to talk to students at Brunel University, as part of the Motion Design and Film Making Evening. The format structure of two guest speakers worked really well, as our experiences, knowledge and stories dovetailed seamlessly between each other, giving the students a really full and detailed introduction to the world of short form film making.

Adrian Harrison

Digital Media’s close and relevant links with the creative industry can only be of benefit to the students and I hope that they were inspired and able to take something away from the evening. My advice to new film makers is to be honest to yourself when planning and making your film, and continually ask yourself the question; what is the story, and why do you want to tell it.

Placements

Introduction Students are given the opportunity to undertake a placement as part of their time at Brunel University. Placements are the perfect opportunity to develop new skills, gain essential experience and learn even more about the Creative Industries.

Keep it Brief

Placement Scheme Why Do A Work Placement? The optional Placement year gives our second year students the opportunity to gain skills specific to their chosen subjects; giving them the best possible preparation for employment. It seeks to ensure that these employability skills are not an optional extra, but an integral part of their learning experience.

Each student receives a number of supportive visits from their allocated academic tutor throughout their placement. In collaboration with our Innovation & Entrepreneur Hub, we also ensure support and guidance for students who are looking to set up their own business for the year.

Aims of a Placement Year • Develop and enhance student’s future employability skills and industry focus.

• Ability to analyse industry demands from an employer’s and academic perspective

• Gain relevant industrial/design experience in a professional environment

• Successfully engage in selfdirected, informal learning

• Gather knowledge of a company’s business and expectations

• Adapt to professional behaviours and organisational expectations

Brunel University has a distinguished history as a pioneer in providing work experience within our degree programmes. A work placement is a strategic opportunity for students to gain experience and develop new skills. We have a diverse set of placements from a wide range of industry sectors both national and from abroad. We cultivate strong, longstanding relationships and links and have an excellent track record for placing our Digital Media students in various companies from large corporations to SMEs in the Creative Industries and beyond.

Placement Scheme I spent my placement year working for Automatik VFX, a boutique visual effects house, as a CG intern. As I enthusiastically showed my skills, I was quickly moved away from a basic intern role and was placed onto full CGI shots for major film and TV projects for clients such as Netflix and Amazon Prime. I learnt a huge amount from artists of all

Working at Disney was a tremendous experience. Not only did I fulfilled my job role as a UX Design and Production Intern, but I also shadowed the games department, gained valuable work experience at National Geographic, attended personal development workshops, social events, and I had designated one to one session with senior members of staff.

disciplines both technically and artistically. In turn, I was able to share my technical knowledge with them of newer 3D technologies. I was also able to learn the skill of saying “no”, something that is often difficult to grasp before working on a placement!

I kept an enthusiastic and optimistic attitude for all the tasks that I completed. In the event of learning something new I was eager and confident to put myself forward. I participated in design research on an aspect of product design and richly contributed to the overall design within those projects.

As my internship came to an end, I was asked to stay on for more time at the request of the company head, at a full freelance rate. I have since continued to work closely with Automatik throughout my final year of university, taking on specific challenges for projects that they know play to my strengths, whilst offering the flexibility of hours I require during my studies. I now have the privilege of starting full-time work with them for a year as a CG artist, bypassing the traditional pathway of becoming a junior post-graduation and giving me a huge opportunity to develop my showreel, my skills, and my industry connections. My placement kickstarted my career in an explosive fashion - I could not recommend taking on a placement more.

The experience developed my understanding of User Interface and Experience design. I would highly recommend participating in the placement scheme as it makes you better prepared for me for final year, increases your confidence in communicating ideas and accepting constructive criticism.

Lawrence O’Sullivan – Design & Production, Walt Disney Company, London

Lewis Coombes - Current CG Artist at Automatik VFX

My placement at Peerless has given me an introduction to the real world of working in the VFX industry for TV and film. I had the opportunity to work along side VFX designers, gaining valuable knowledge and skills in rotoscoping work and daily screening sessions. I feel that this experience has set me up ready for my final year back at university and also looking ahead to future employment.

My time at Peter Anderson Studio has allowed me to fully immerse myself in the world of motion and title design, from seeing the creative process and rationale behind ideation at the beginning of a project to the production and development of the final result. Not only have I learnt to question myself more as to why I am doing something, I also have been given the trust and creative freedom to explore my own ideas which is something I didn’t expect at such an early stage in my professional career.

This has also allowed me to build up a portfolio of dynamic visual content. At Amadeus, I am supported by a great mentor who has 15+ years of industry experience, and from whom I can learn a lot.

Doing a placement at Proctor & Gamble enhanced my design and life skills. I learnt how to work a full 9 – 5 working week without distraction, whilst managing my own schedule. Being the only designer within the marketing team allowed me to voice my ideas without them being diluted by senior team members and allowed me to lead projects such as new product packaging. I’d highly recommend doing a placement, as it provides key experience in your chosen field that will definitely help with finding a job after university. years of industry experience, and from whom I can learn a lot.

Erno Frak - Placement Student at Amadeus

Dominic Percy - Former Placement Student at Proctor & Gamble

I believe my placement year at Hello Lamp Post transformed me into being a more confident and organised individual and mos iimportantly, made me realise my potential as a multifaceted designer. My self-discipline and confidence as a person and a designer increased exponentially, learning that my opinions and ideas are worth being told, whether they are good or bad and I should be proud to share them. The company was selected to be one of the start-ups on Facebook’s accelerator project called LDN_ LAB and we got to work in the Facebook Offices for 3 months. I gained great insights from the Facebook teams and Creative Director of Facebook London. Overall, I gained a wealth of knowledge across certain key roles and responsibilities I am now putting into practice as a Digital Designer.

For me, it was an absolute privilege to be accepted on placement at IMG Studios’ graphics department. I was treated as an equal, surrounded by fantastic colleagues who continued to teach me about the rules of broadcast, implementing the principles of design in the real world, and supported me when things became a little stressful. Having now created content for TV broadcasts and worked with different industry personnel, I feel confident going forward and working in the industry post-graduation. I am truly excited for the future based on my overwhelmingly positive experience during my placement.

Success Despite Covid By Patrick Geider BSc Digital Design

My Placement Plan During my second year of university, I had high hopes for my placement, with the goal of working for a big-name brand or specialised agency. But as Covid erupted and the ensuing uncertainty around the economy emerged, opportunities dried up.

Fiverr Gig Projects As a result, I pivoted away from full-time work into freelancing, building on my previous experience with around 30 clients through Fiverr. My highest paying client to date kicked off the placement. Things were looking good, and I had hoped this would continue.

Page 134

Unpaid & Revisited Work But, when the second wave of covid came, client enquiries slowed. Despite adding new gigs and completing certifications, projects had completely dried up by December. To meet placement requirements, I took on unpaid projects for charities and updated previous projects.

Returning Client Project These kept me going into January, and as they were rounded off the client who kicked off my placement got back in touch to create a pitch deck. As the weeks went into February, client enquiries picked up through my website and from Brunel. Things were starting to look up.

2021

Full-stack Freelancing One offer was from The Brothers, Gurmit and Amardeep Shakhon to help create a complete brand strategy, identity design, website and marketplace UX and UI. This was my most significant project to date. It was a big turnaround from a couple months earlier.

Managing & Consulting Another enquiry was to join Catch21, a charity I had worked with at the end of my first year. From the beginning of March, I helped set up their management system for 40 new Kickstart employees and led a team of 6 in updating the brand’s strategy and identity.

Junior UX Job Offer As these projects rounded off in April, The Brothers got back in touch about a Junior UX role at their company Fintama to work with a major client. I was extremely excited to say the least. As a final bonus, they onboarded me early to help with Fintama’s brand strategy and design.

An Amazing Year I am now completing the final months of my placement, working with an amazing team and for a big-name brand within a specialised agency. The two independent goals I had for my placement year have now both come to fruition in a way that is better than what I was hoping for.

A Clever Use Of VR To Present In Style... By Erno Frak BSc Visual Effects & Motion Graphics Since the ongoing pandemic has imposed significant changes to the way we worked through our studies in 2020/21, we all had adapt to the situation. With the fact that most of our teaching had to be online, and no physical Degree show event could be held, it was amazing to see the hard

work that was put into creating a virtual exhibition by the Degree Show Team. On the day of the annual show we have a final presentation that is assessed and graded for our major project’s module. Thinking about previous years’ exhibitions, I got an idea how I could bring the experience

Page 138

as close to what I would have normally had as possible. I just felt if I can’t physically stand in front of my A3 posters, with my artefact shown on a computer screen next to me then at least maybe I could use green-screen as a tool to composite myself into the VR environment and repli-

cate the normal scene. I setup my home green-screen with domestic lights and my DSLR to film myself talking about the posters that will be marked during my presentation and to introduce my major project in a bit more detail. Following the shoot, I composited the chroma

keyed footage in After Effects with the VR environment backplates that I’d have screen recorded in a browser earlier. There were slight camera movements I experimented with and was interested to see if I could track those and match with the keyed footage for a more

realistic look. The final video turned out quite nice, it allowed me to stand in the VR environment talking through my project deliverables and it impressed the Digital media staff too. Mr Paul Butler really liked my tenacity and ingenuity demonstrated through both this

VR scene taken to a new level as well as in my major project’s artefact. Showing it to more people attracted more complimenting comments from course mates and friends too. I think the creative execution I came up with for my final presentation really helped bring-

ing a nice closure to my studies at Brunel and it made it a lasting memory to reflect on.

Phoenix, Make Your Own Pho By Francesca Roa BSc Digital Design Phoenix is a 360º Marketing Campaign that encompasses : - Branding - Packaging - Advertisement - Promotional Video - UX/UI Design.

The idea of the marketing campaign was to raise awareness and improve the trends of unhealthy food often chosen in takeaway meals among young adults. Through the creation of a new distinct food brand and a new type of service,

Page 140

Vietnamese food can prove to be an alternative solution that can combine the healthy food aspect as well as bringing a new taste experience to the United Kingdom. The customer would have the possibility to create their own Pho

(which is the Vietnam national dish) through a cooking box called a Pho-Box. All the ingredients and utensils will be contained in the packaging. The service would be accessible from a mobile application where the customer would have the

possibility to choose either a click and collect or a delivery service. They will also be able to read where the ingredients come from, see the reviews and share their experience on social media. An Instagram account has been created as well (@phoenix_by_

fran) to see all the new upcoming events and the latest news. The overall approach of Phoenix was to create an engaging brand in a form of a multi-platform campaign to engage a community of Pho-Lovers to eat healthier.

The Raven By Jade Peters BSc Visual Effects & Motion Graphics The Raven is a 2D Animation narrative based on a poem I wrote by the same name, a story following an elusive character that ferries forgotten souls left behind by war. Within this project, I wanted to not only explore animation, but also

Character and Environment design – utilising my illustration skill set to bring my vision to life. I drew inspiration from atmospheric horror games like “Little Nightmares” and “Inside” for the Style concepts, and drew on the “Inner Peace” scene from

Page 142

Case Studies

Kung Fu Panda 2 for the colour scheme and environment. Colour was important with the low red light washing over the scene to create a sense of danger, counteracted by the blue of the “Forgotten Soul”. I wanted the character to display a sense of

mysterious elegance, so I also drew on ballet costumes as well as the elusive designs in the horror games mentioned. Accompanied by haunting piano music, and a voice over reading the poem, I was really pleased

2021

with how the initial scenes have come out. I hand drew every asset in this piece using Clip Studio Paint and a Wacom Graphics Tablet, and I then took these layers into Adobe After Effects for the ani-

mation process. The animation style was partially inspired by the ancient Japanese paper book concepts, but also partially by Blue Zoo’s summer short “Via”, creating the same haunting atmosphere as my poem. It is an on-going project, as I intend to

finish the remaining scenes over the summer and re-record the initial voice over, but I would also like to explore this as a 3D animation in the future. Overall, I think there is a lot of potential for this project going forward; especially for my first 2D

animation, I definitely achieved the start of what I originally set out to create. I look forward to being able to combine the things I learned in this project with my developing VFX work.

3D Character Design By Lewis Coombes BSc Visual Effects & Motion Graphics My final year project focused in depth on the process that goes into the creation of a 3D character for using in visual effects work in a potential short film. Initially beginning with a variety of basic concept designs, I worked my way through the full industry

pipeline – modelling, texturing, rigging, and finally to animation and rendering. The final character, “JMD-021 Malachite Class Unit: ‘Hamish’”, comes from the fictional “Kaji Mining Corp”. Visual storytelling was essential in this

Page 144

Case Studies

project, hence the heavy weathering on the paint work, and the “retro” feeling logo of the company (despite it being futuristic). Despite his dull job, I still wanted him to have a real personality – challenging when only eyes are available. Using a

variety of texturing and rigging techniques, the eyes can easily be animated with a variety of expressions based on simple symbols, harking back to early internet emoticons, using “!” for surprise, “^” for contentment and so on.

2021

As a mining robot, I wanted to use the names of minerals for the type of unit, suggesting there could be many others designed for different roles. I found quite fortunately, as I had already chosen the colour palette, that malachite can grow in bubble like

shapes, echoing the shape of the robot – a perfect mineral name for this design. As the whole project was focused on meeting industry standards, the tools I used also had to fit that requirement. Autodesk Maya for all 3D aspects, Substance Painter

for texture work, and Arnold for final rendering. An important aspect to my project, however, was the improvement of the industry workflow. Using custom written python scripts, I applied heavy automation and created custom toolsets to speed

up my workflow process, both for this project and any in future.

2nd Nature Skate Brand By Tom Merry BSc Visual Effects & Motion Graphics Project Description Skateboarding and Longboarding has seen a huge increase in popularity throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, bringing a much more diverse audience to the sport. Brands utilising recycled materials within their

products has also seen a huge increase in popularity as the pressure to be more socially responsible continues to grow. 2nd Nature has been created to prove skating can also be a sustainable business.

Socially Responsible Sales All decks would be constructed of recycled plastics which can be traded in by customers during exclusive pop-up stores and gain access to discounts across the store or enter limited edition product giveaways. The

more plastic traded the higher the discount or tickets entered the raffle. Marketing Approach Motion Design has seen a huge boost in popularity as a form of promoting products across digital

platforms, but skate brands have yet to utilise this appealing form of marketing material. 2nd Nature uses a variety of Motion Design approaches to create this content from live action and kinetic typography to 3D animation, all blending to create engaging con-

tent to help sell the brands energy and approach to creating skating products for a wide audience. Creation Process A variety in software’s and approaches to creating visual content for the brand were

utilised and executed in the process of this project. Live action shoots were planned and shot to be edited later in After Effects where kinetic typography was animated and parts of the footage were rotoscoped out to be replaced with designs from

the brand. A large amount of the promotional work also utilises 3D softwares such as Cinema4D and Redshift Renderer, both used to create designs and animation for products graphics and marketing material.

Becky Ward

Senior Graphic Designer at Socialchaat, India

Gram Games

In India, I studied ‘lifestyle accessory’ design but with a change in interest I found my way into the graphic design industry. My first job experience as a graphic designer taught me the key principles of graphic design, built a strong foundation and eager to learn more. So I graduated in Digital Design and Branding at Brunel University in 2020. It built my confidence as a designer, enriching my knowledge of brand strategy, experience design, teaching me to think more strategically and design efficiently.

I graduated in 2020 from Brunel University with a First in Visual Effects and Motion Graphics. During my placement year I secured myself an internship at Gram Games, a mobile games developer. Where I was working with their marketing art team as a marketing artist. My role included creating visual marketing content for user acquisition purposes. I also got stuck into data and creative analysis, learning about how the artwork I was creating was being used to market our games.

As an international student, the pandemic proved very challenging, but with a strong portfolio I landed job interviews in the UK, helping build useful contacts for the future. I continued working on freelance projects in India and also finding work experience in an e-commerce agency in the UK.

I ended up working over my set placement duration having enjoyed the internship so much and continued to work part time as a marketing artist throughout the final year of my degree. I must admit, balancing work, assignments and the final year project was quite the adventure! It was all worth it in the end as after graduating they offered me a full time position as a mid level marketing artist.

Returning to India, with the help of good references and contacts, I landed a job as a Senior Graphic Designer in a digital marketing agency, responsible for creating brand identities, building UIs for websites and guiding my design team. My academic, job hunting and work experiences have taught me many valuable skills and given me the confidence to achieve what I set out to do.

Page 150

Since I have continued to work at Gram Games, expanding my knowledge of digital marketing, branding and user acquisition. I enjoy working there very much, despite having worked virtually for the entirety of my full-time position there so far. My team is supportive and allows me to learn and expand my skills not only as an artist but as a marketer. I hope to continue learning about the wonderful world of digital marketing, an ever-changing industry!

Graduating during such a precarious time in 2020 from the Visual Effects & Motion Graphics course, it was unlikely I would go straight into the workplace when so many companies were culling their workforce or putting them on furlough. I didn’t let that put me off though and made sure that while I applied for roles, I continued to connect with those in the Creativity Industries. That’s not all I did. I continued to work on my own craft including entering competitions. Of the competitions I participated in, I managed to successfully win one and work alongside Potion Pictures Studio to brand the visual identity for a new Sky Arts’ show, ‘Unmuted’. This was the highlight of my last 12 months and to see my work broadcast nationally was a moment of sheer joy and knowing that the graphics will appear on screens for the foreseeable future continues to fill me with pride. I also worked freelance on several small projects meaning that I had assets to add to my portfolio and show at interviews.

“The studio was founded as a reaction to the first Brunel Virtual Event and we created the Future Proof Virtual Event in 2020 as part of the Brunel Digital Degree team.

In February 2021 as more junior roles began to appear on the jobs’ market, I successfully won the role of Junior Animator for the Integrated Creative Studio at The Unlimited Group. Unlimited’s Comms division has been restructuring and trying to push their content creation to new levels; they saw me as a valuable addition to their new studio through my previous placement at IMG Studios and the work I had completed during my final year and post-graduation. The great thing is that I get to work on a variety of projects as both a designer and animator and for so many different brands, well-known and not. They also see my potential and are looking to get me training to improve my generalist and 3D skills so that I can be confident in the approach to my work – that is what made me choose this job above all and I haven’t regretted it since.

This event was the answer to the need for social distancing created by the Covid-19 pandemic, later being acknowledged as a new channel of interaction between people. Seeing a potential need for virtual events in a variety of industries, we founded Berry Studio shortly after graduating, together with Alin Raducanu and Ciprian Ghenceanu. Throughout our first year of activity we created a 3D branded replica of the Brunel Michael Sterling building hosting the virtual launch of the Brunel Institute of Digital Futures. In this journey of self-discovery we worked on projects ranging from institute launches, galleries, social events and healthcare workshops. Our Team is now working towards further developing the business by attending an accelerator programme in order to narrow down to a specific niche and target new clients.”

My advice to the Class of 2021 is to take the opportunity of a recovering job market and apply using all the resources and knowledge that Brunel, the PDC and LinkedIn has to offer. If you’re not quite ready to enter a role straightaway, that’s fine – just continue to develop yourself both personally and creatively.

Jackson Davis and Joshua Friend Videographers at WEAREWISER

Start of a Friendship

Wiser

We started at Brunel back in 2014, enrolling on the Visual Effects and Motion Graphics course, where we quickly became friends and decided to start working on personal and university projects together - which was of course a lot easier with access to the university’s collection of high level equipment and software.

Starting Davis & Friend

We were introduced to Wiser during the New Designers event. They took a particular interest in our work, however there was only one vacancy at the time. Josh was the one to be chosen for the job as he was the most relevant fit at the time. Jackson went on to work for an edTech company for 12 months, creating training and marketing content for their brand. However, a year later he was asked to work for Wiser again, at which he jumped at the chance.

Driven by a background of freelancing in the industry, in our placement year we decided to take the plunge and start our own video production company. We worked closely with the Innovation Hub to produce a business plan and to prepare ourselves for the daunting task of building a client base from nothing, and with that Davis & Friend was born.

Wiser is a half creative, half recruitment company. We operate within the Employer Branding space, creating campaigns and content to market and communicate to people within or seeking roles within our clients companies. This feeds perfectly into the recruitment side of the business where we place people into roles through our Early Careers, Grads and Elite team.

Thanks to a shared passion for the overall process of video production Davis & Friend was able to offer a start to finish service to many clients including Mclaren, ISG, Barclays, and Just Eat to name a few. Being a small company with very few overheads, we were able to keep our prices competitive whilst providing a high level end-to-end service and as a result many of our clients found us by word of mouth alone. We based ourselves in Croydon in a small office and after our first year was successful we continued running the business on our return to Uxbridge for our final year. During this time Davis & Friend completed post-production on a feature film alongside our studies.

Our roles

As our degree came to a close we agreed that despite moderate success with Davis & Friend, it was important to learn from larger businesses if we wanted to grow in the way we imagined. We decided to put a pause on things and gain some wider experience. This would also give us a chance to relieve ourselves of the responsibility of running a small business and focussing on improving our creative skills.

Page 152

Alumni

We have an interest in many different skills spanning from Filming and editing, 3D and motion graphics to sound and colour grading. Wiser allows us to tap into all of these areas, keeping our role very fresh and exciting. We’ve had the opportunity to travel around the world, to experiment with different approaches to briefs and expand upon our skills - something we’re very happy about and very grateful for.

Feedback on FYP Presentations

Industry health and futures outlook

Wendy Mubaiwa GradPrentice “The majority of presentations were very unique with students presenting ideas in a very innovate way and with a resolution on how to progress. The research input was of a very high and well thought out standard. Presenters should all think about how they can commercialise their products, the transition into industry and to highlight the tools used to demonstrate technical ability.”

Adrian Harrison

Kristen Bjaarstad Tui UK&I “Working within the design marketing sector has been challenging and the job market for graduates will initially be hard and will take a while to recover. However, with most companies looking to review their marketing strategy, f ocusing on the growth of ecommerce and digital platforms, could see new roles and given the right skillsets, well placed for graduates entering the job market.”

BBC “First time taking part in the student presentations and had some concerns on some the pitch & presentation deliverability, but was very impressed with the presentations seen and thought some of the concepts were fantastic. Spoke about the importance of bringing a unique, distinctive and engaging design to the project and discussed story flow and narrative construct.”

David Bonney Marketing & Brand Consultant “Some students really stood out with their confidence coming through during their presentation and showing passion for their subject matter and a desire to showcase developing skills to future employers was evident. I was very impressed to see the enthusiasm and professionalism demonstrated by the students.”

Amardeep & Gurmit Shakhon HSBC “Graduates will have the advantage of working with all different types of digital platforms whether it be via online learning, online social activities or other digital experiences gained from their degree course and should use to their advantage along with their unlimited creativity demonstrated through their work. With remote working being on the forefront and the learning curve experienced during this pandemic, it has made it all the more important to understand the new challenges ahead and learn how to adapt digital tools and platforms making it easier for all users.”
