"The final and proper purpose of all beef cattle breeding is to produce good beef; its highest purpose is the production of the most beef of the best quality in the least time, with a given amount of feed and care." L.H. KERRICK, 15th President of the American Angus Association
1902
Thank you for your interest in our 2018 Production Sale. As seedstock producers, it is our duty to provide the commercial cattleman with function and genetically reliable cattle. Our strict sire selection process utilizes all of the tools available to identify high accuracy bloodlines that are complementary of our herd; and most importantly, result in a consumer-driven, high quality beef product. We have been developing our Angus herd for more than 40 years and are proud to offer you our most powerfully balanced set of bulls and females yet. We recognize and appreciate the confidence you have placed in our genetics as we strive to continually make the progress to earn it. Respectfully,
REISS, FRED & FRANK BRUNING
JUST A QUICK NOTE I realize this is a little different from your typical bull sale catalog. While this book is an offering of our sale, it is also a way to show you a little bit more about us. It is a mini yearbook, a periodical and my editorial contribution to our business, allowing a little more creativity than my regular duties of paperwork and pushing cows. So, thank you for caring; for scrolling through these few pages and for being here to support us as we evolve this family business into the next generation. Most Sincerely, heather bruning

ABOUT US
F
our Bruning brothers came to Nebraska in 1887 - settling on a section of land east of the Burlington railroad, not yet incorporated as a town. The youngest, Frank (Diederich), purchased 320 acres which started Bruning Farms. His entrepreneurial spirit established a livestock business and fostered a love for race horses. His son, Fred H. Bruning, would focus the business on cattle, adding a feedlot in the 1930s and more grazing lands while others plowed the Nebraska plains into farmland. Instilling the passion of range management and cattle production into his son, Frank L. Bruning continued to develop grazing lands in the 1950s. Enterprising fencing systems, reseeding farmlands into native grasses and implementing persistent conservation efforts as he paved the way for son, Fred D. Bruning and now grandson, Reiss and families, all three generations working side by side. Today, Bruning Farms is a registered and commercial cattle business, calving in both the spring and fall. As a U.S. Premium Beef Qualified Seedstock Provider, our goal is to produce desirable beef of the highest quality. By focusing on maternal without undermining terminal traits,

our operation allows us to dial in on performance and provide relevant genetics essential for progressive cattlemen. By seeing each calf crop from birth to summer grazing and finish in our own feedlot, we see production agriculture full circle. In doing so, we hope to positively impact our customer’s operations so as an industry we can progressively breed for better beef. We strive every day to hold up the traditions and values of a generational family farm. Frank (91) and Mary (88) teach us to take care of what we have while enjoying life. Their advice often embellished with one of Frank’s famous quotes. Fred and Penni provide a foundation of leadership, uninhibited support and open minds. Reiss’ older siblings and their families provide unrelenting encouragement, counsel and never shy away from helping with the family business. Adam and wife, Carley, live in Holdrege, Neb. Abby and husband, Nick Branting, Annika (2) and newborn Lukas live in Bend, Ore. Heather’s family, The Oentrich’s, make up the southern branch of support, just down stream of the Little Blue River in Barnes, Kan., offering sale help, begetting the slow-roasted brisket (momma’s recipe) meal after the sale, roping in new customers, or providing comic relief.
top left: While Bruning, in the middle of corn country, is fantastic for winter grazing; a unique grassland of the Sandstone Prairies just 30 miles southeast, which we call Cow Camp, is our summer sanctuary. top right: Frank, 91, still makes the rounds everyday and is the best spotter of an open gate or sick animal and deliverer of what he calls unsolicited advice, but we’re always happy to see him and hear the lesson of the day. middle left: In June, we hosted the Nebraska Grazing Lands Coalition Summer Grazing Tour. The Nebraska wind was as unforgiving as ever: 38 mph, but eased the 96° heat during the entire outdoor event. middle right: Bruning was in the path of totality during the Solar Eclipse in August. For two minutes the moon covered the sun in the middle of the day, no cows noticed or really seemed to care about the natural phenomena. bottom: After selling private treaty for more than 40 years, Bruning Farms began this Production Sale in 2016; still in its infancy,
we work every day to make genetic selections worthy of your investment. After 4 years since returning home, Reiss’ genetic decisions have led to the most balanced set of cattle yet for our 2018 offering.

ABOUT
Late in 2016, Fred proposed we build a large, monoslope calving shed. We all drug our feet at the thought of a big project; but have to admit now that its complete, checking calvers at night is a little easier underneath the canopy of the new Fred Shed.
In 2017, we increased embryo transfers, adding 35% more than the previous year. A step towards offering consistent, reliable cow families.
It is not lost on us that we have some of the kindest neighbors, friends and professionals helping us each and every day. Kirk Willoughby and Dr. Michael Cox, thank you!
Frank & Mary were honored with the first annual Nebraska Grazing Lands Coalition Lifetime Achievement Award. Spending most of their lives fostering Bruning Farms grassland (reseeding more than 1,000 acres of farmland back to native grasses), the opportunity to host the tour was an honor in itself.

Bruning native and friend, Craig Uden served as NCBA President this year. We are proud to call him one of our own from Nebraska and appreciate all of the hard work he’s done in the name of U.S. Beef! Seen here with Grazing Tour co-host John Lange.
The year started off with promising rains, only to be followed by three months of little to no moisture at our grass pasture, so weaning came a little earlier in 2017.
Family friend, Mariana Camargo, sent her younger brother, Eduardo, to spend a week with us as he traveled through the U.S. As an agronomist from Brazil, Eduardo was eager to see what we do here at Bruning Farms - his stay was in the middle of spring breeding season - so there was much to see and do during our timed AI breeding schedule. In his short time here, we gained a lifelong friend and loved having an extra set of hands to help AI!

The dry summer led to a lower silage yield. Roughly 2,200 tons of winter feed was picked, packed and covered from 110 dry land acres.
The Australian Meats Judging Team made their annual stop on their way from the Meat Animal Research Center after competing at the Denver Stockshow (and winning their division, congrats y’all!).
Jake Bruss returned home from Afghanistan after a tour of service with the National Guard. Jake is a student at UNL and helps us occasionally through the year, fortunately he got back just in time to help us throw tires on that silage pile. Welcome home, Jake! Thank you for your service!

At B R U N I N G FA R M S , we strongly believe the end product of the beef industry is the most important. Regardless of which sector you’re in, the combination of quality genetics alongside good management practices makes the difference in any cattleman’s bottom line. Since 2001, we have sold our fed cattle through U. S . P R E M I U M B E E F , a producer owned marketing
company that provides incentive for high quality beef products through quality-based grid pricing. As shareholders, we receive individual carcass data from every animal. For 15 years, we’ve tracked this data and used it to make sound genetic improvements. In the past three years alone, over 1000 head of homeraised calves and calves purchased from our customers graded 99.7% C H O I C E or higher - of which were 16.65% P R I M E . Bruning Farms is one of only three Q U A L I F I E D S E E D S T O C K S U P P L I E R S in the state of Nebraska, which highlights our dedication and experience towards producing and offering bloodlines that are consistent and excel in carcass quality. If you are interested in retaining ownership of your calves, we can help you with S H A R E L E A S I N G opportunities through USPB. If you are selling your calves sired by Bruning Farms genetics we’d like the opportunity to BUY THEM BACK. 7 •

Genetically Enhanced EPDs A L L O F O U R R E G I S T E R E D C AT T L E are presented with genetically enhanced EPDs, or GE-EPDs. They have been GeneSeek Genetic Profile Low Density (GGPLD) tested and parentage verified by DNA. GE-EPDs are the best estimate of an animal’s genetic worth as a parent. These values make use of known pedigree, performance and genomic information about an animal, its progeny and other relatives. In all, the DNA test enhances predictability of current selection tools and increases EPD accuracy on young animals from a tissue sample submitted.

ABOUT
EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCES (EPD) E P D s are current as of January 26, 2018. Updated EPDs can be viewed at angus.org I N A N E F F O R T to help make the genetic selection process easier, we have selected 12 EPDs and $Values that we
feel are the most relevant in our customer’s decision making.
N E W T H I S Y E A R is our percentile indicator. The EPD values with a gold box and “Top %” at the bottom indicates that specific animal's percentile ranking for that trait amongst his/her peers in the Angus breed. A smaller percentage indicates a stronger influence for that trait.
E X P E C T E D P R O G E N Y D I F F E R E N C E ( E P D ) , is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to
the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus.
C A LV I N G E A S E D I R E C T (C E D ) , is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater
calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to firstcalf heifers.
B I R T H W E I G H T ( B W ), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of
other sires.
W E A N I N G W E I G H T ( W W ) , expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared
to that of other sires.
Y E A R L I N G W E I G H T ( Y W ) , expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to
that of other sires.
M AT E R N A L M I L K ( M I L K ) , is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared
to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf ’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.
C O W E N E R G Y ($ E N ), expressed in dollar savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar
savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy
expenses). Components for computing the cow $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size.
M A R B L I N G ( M A R B ), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other
sires.
R I B E Y E A R E A ( R E ), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny
of other sires.
$ VA L U E I N D E X E S , are multi-trait selection indexes, expressed in dollars per head, to assist beef producers by adding simplicity to
genetic selection decisions. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment.
F E E D L O T VA L U E ($ F ) , an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance
for postweaning merit compared to progeny of other sires.
W E A N E D C A L F VA L U E ( $ W ) , an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny
performance for preweaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk and mature cow size.
G R I D VA L U E ($ G ), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for
carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires.
B E E F VA L U E ($ B ), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for
postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires.

Suitable for heifers and marking 13 EPD traits in the top 25% or better of the breed, 1407 also has the attractive look of a herd bull with his length of body and springy rib shape carried by big, correct feet. Individual weights are impressive spreads in his large contemporary group from his BWR @ 98, WR @ 109, and YR @ 111 in addition to an IMF ratio of 119! He is definitely one to build a herd with and his proven sire, G A R Sunrise, has stamped the Angus breed with daughters that are well structured phenotypic standouts and inherit the right balance of traits that we strive for. 1407’s dam, a daughter of our past popular herd sire “W73,” will be a Pathfinder having recorded 3 BR @ 92, and 3 WR @ 108. 497 puts all of the right pounds in all of the right places and pairs a big top with rib depth perfectly. He weaned off near the top of his contemporary group and added a YR @ 112 while maintaining his heifer bull status and a Mature Height and Mature Weight EPDs ranking in the lowest 80% of the breed. A great selection for use on virgin heifers. These Yuma calves are an exciting bunch with great feet and leg structure and added dimension.

If his stout set, springy ribbed profile and excellent feet aren’t enough to get your attention, his data will. Of all Basin Yuma sons in the Angus breed, 527 is ranked the 9th highest for $W.
