We acknowledge our responsibility to provide our customers with the right tools that work towards the industry-wide goal of efficiently producing a high-quality end product. Our operation is modeled to
take our genetics through the full production cycle; from conception to carcass, in order to completely understand the impact of our decisions
beyond weaning weights. After generations of developing our herd this way, we are proud to present our strongest genetic offering to date.
We hope to earn and keep your interest in our program so that we can collectively breed better beef. Respectfully,
Just a Quick Note Somehow we’re already in the thick of calving season and full swing ahead to the sale. The beginning of the year is busy for us all; so, thank you for taking the time to read this catalog. There is a little extra content to shuffle through before you get to the actual offerings. While this book is a catalog of our production sale; it’s also periodical, a reference of everything that went into our family business this year, and a way for me to share more about us than just the cows we’re selling. I am much obliged to you for caring; for flipping through those extra pages and for showing interest in Bruning Farms. about us
our Bruning brothers came to Nebraska in 1887 - settling on a section of land east of the Burlington railroad, not yet incorporated as a town. The youngest, Frank (Diederich), purchased 320 acres which started Bruning Farms. His entrepreneurial spirit established a livestock business and fostered a love for race horses. His son, Fred H., would focus the business on cattle, adding a feedlot in the 1930s and acquire more grazing lands while others plowed the Nebraska plains into farmland. Instilling the passion of range management and cattle production into his son, Frank L., continued to develop grazing lands in the 1950s. Enterprising fencing systems, reseeding farmlands into native grasses and implementing persistent conservation efforts as he paved the way for son, Fred D. and now grandson, Reiss and families, all three generations working side by side. Today, Bruning Farms is a registered and commercial cattle business, calving in both the spring and fall. As a U.S. Premium Beef Qualified Seedstock Provider, our goal is to produce desirable beef of the highest quality. By focusing on maternal without undermining terminal traits, our operation allows us to dial
in on performance and provide relevant genetics essential for progressive cattlemen. By seeing each calf crop from birth to summer grazing and finish in our own feedlot, we see production agriculture full circle. In doing so, we hope to positively impact our customer’s operations; so as an industry we can progressively breed for better beef. We strive every day to hold up the traditions and values of a generational family farm. Frank (92) and Mary (89) teach us to take care of what we have while enjoying life. Their advice often embellished with one of Frank’s famous quotes (see below). Fred and Penni provide a foundation of leadership, uninhibited support and open minds. Reiss’ older siblings and their families provide unrelenting encouragement, counsel and never shy away from helping with the family business. Adam and wife, Carley, live in Holdrege, Neb. Abby and husband, Nick Branting, Annika (2) and Lukas (1) live in Bend, Ore. Heather’s family, the Oentrich’s, make up the southern branch of support, just down stream of the Little Blue River in Barnes, Kan.; offering sale help, begetting the slow-roasted brisket (momma’s recipe) meal after the sale, roping in new customers, or providing comic relief.

A L L F L EX ’ S SE N SE HUB In June, we hosted the launch of Allflex’s new SenseTime Hub technology. As a beta test site, we’ve watched the technology develop from a bulky beltlike collar to small, dangling eED eartag. 2 . B R A N D ED B E EF National Beef launched a new boxed beef line: HyPlains Heritage Beef, featuring “the best Angus beef from the best
Angus ranchers” their slogan, not ours; but we humbly accept. In launching their brand, they asked if their marketing team could follow us around for a day. When a professional camera crew (including a makeup artist) met us at Cow Camp on an early August morning, we felt a little under-qualified. They were more than accommodating and didn’t mind traipsing through the hills and trees while we gathered pairs at grass.
3.
3. NYC WINE & FOOD FESTIVAL As part of the HyPlains Heritage Farms debut, National Beef sponsored the New York City Food & Wine Festival’s Backyard Barbecue in October and sent us along with another featured ranch. We spent the festival meeting and eating with some of New York’s top chefs, all who were ecstatic that producers from the heartland had come to see how our product is celebrated. They genuinely praised the beef we raise and the dedication to supply only the best.

4 . P LU S O N E The crew grew by one this year. Heath Buchannan joined us in the fall after shortly after graduating from the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture in Curtis. He has been a tremendous asset to our operation already. 5 . M OT H ER N AT U R E IN 2 0 1 8 Spring started off hot, with hardly any moisture. Conditions that even the brome grass struggled to sprout under. As fall came, Mother Nature made up for what we missed in the spring with almost constant moisture. Area farmers struggled to get harvest crops out of the fields in between rains; in turn, making

it challenging to get cows and calves home for grazing corn stalks. Winter came in briskly at the beginning of this year, freezing every bit of moisture that lingered and adding more of its own. 6. TA ILO R M A DE In November, our friends Brad & Lacey Fahrmeier of Tailor Made Genetics relocated from the Flint Hills of Kansas to the big skies of Montana. In order to make the long move and transition to high altitude easier, they decided to sell the spring calving herd. Throughout some pedigrees you will see the prefix TMG indicating cow families they have meticulously developed.

which sector you’re in, the combination of quality genetics alongside good management practices makes the difference in any cattleman’s bottom line.

selling were above average; but our commitment to genetics and feed management weren’t rewarded. Carcass data from the first years showed 88% Choice and 34.3% CAB brand

Playbook 868 reminds us of that kid in school whose favorite musical instrument was the dinner bell.
Double-digit calving ease and negative birth weight EPD bull carries a tremendous amount of substance he is sure to pass on to his progeny, adding flesh and not frame to tilt the scales in your favor. Ranks in the top 3% of non-parent bulls for $Weaning
and has impressed at every weight measurement starting at birth with a ratio of 93 and flexed a 113 weaning ratio. He gained a casual daily average of 4.3 pounds from weaning to yearling, but don’t let his soggy look discount his muscle density, he
scanned an REA@107. His efficient and moderate framed mama knows how to raise them as shown in her production records: 4 BR@97, 3 WR@106, and 2 YR@108 and an average calving interval of 364 days. Rounding off his impressive resume, 868 is “teddy bear-tame.”

that his REA measured 16.4 square inches adjusted. Really Windy grandson expressed progressive growth at the tune of WR@105, YR@103, REA@114, and backfat@92. F54 will sire calves with a head start on the rest of their contemporaries. Sound structure with a big and masculine foot.

EXAR DENVER
Selling a heifer pregnancy due to calve on August 14, full sibling to the $60,000 top-selling bull produced by the Basin Angus Ranch program in 2015 and now featured in the ORIgen roster: Yuma 4286. This pregnancy combines the record-selling Express Ranches sire, Denver with the highlight of the Basin Angus, Tailor Made, and Bruning Farms operations, Lucy 1022. The dam of lot 48 blends the proven source of marbling genetics, Wave with a direct daughter of the $3.5 million producer, Lucy 3829 by the Pathfinder Sire, Payweight J847. In addition to Basin Yuma, 1022’s direct progeny are highly sought after across the country and proven to be profitable investments. Most recently this past fall at EZ Angus Ranch in California, a full sister to this pregnancy, Basin Lucy 4261 topped the sale at $120,000 for half interest to Crazy K Ranch in Tennessee followed by her daughter, Basin Lucy 8190 at $100,000 for half interest to High Roller Ranch in Texas.
