This impressive sideboard is from a small group of examples documented to the Fayetteville, North Carolina area. Closely related examples have been recorded by MESDA and several are illustrated in John Bivens, Jr. The Furniture of Coastal North Carolina, 1700-1820, see pages 438-441. MESDA research file McG32-2 is particularly closely related. The example offered here is slightly more diminutive and not as tall as some of those documented examples, but there is no indication of any height reduction to the legs, suggesting that this was perhaps a custom order. Most of the examples that are of taller form have an additional tier of drawers under the cabinet doors. Rare Tennessee View by James Hope (American, 1818-1892)

Estimate: $20,000 - $30,000

Landscape artist and Union Army officer, James Hope was one of several artists, Union and Confederate, who translated their combat experiences into distinguished paintings. However, Hope differed from some of his peers because he was already a successful artist and was well-embarked upon a noteworthy career when he joined the Union Army in May 1861 at the age of forty three. Having painted portraits and then landscapes in Canada and around his adopted home in Vermont, Hope began exhibiting works at the American Art Union in 1849 and at the National Academy of Design in 1854 and was elected an associate member of the NAD in 1871. Going to war gave Hope new subject matter and led him to embrace a genre that Sanford R. Gifford-another soldier-artist-called “historico-military” painting; that is, depictions of battles, battlefields, and other significant wartime people and events. His participation in the battles he depicted and his careful attention to geographical and historical verisimilitude made his historico-military works the hallmarks of his career. View on the Monocacy River with the Catoctin Mountains in the Distance (American, 19th Century)

oil on panel, not visibly signed, inscribed in graphite on verso in what is presumably the artist’s hand, “View on the Monackesy [sic] River”, 20-1/2 x 28-1/2 in.; modern wood frame, 23-1/4 x 31-3/4 in., clean surface, small areas of retouch in the sky; frame with light wear

Estimate: $4,000 - $6,000

It is likely that this scene was painted in the mid 19th Century, based on the clothing of the figures in the foreground and the mix of woodlands and open fields as then depicted. Painted by an as-of-yet unidentified artist, the artist’s viewpoint can clearly be established as a site along the Monocacy River looking west to the Catoctin Mountains at a point just south of historic Frederick, Maryland. The area from which the artist sketched or painted became part of the contested ground upon which the battle of Monocacy was fought in 1864, part of which is now protected by Monocacy National Battlefield Park. An extremely rare and early landscape painting of western Maryland.

In 1949 Mr. Biggers joined the faculty of Texas State University for Negroes in Houston, now Texas Southern University, where he established and was chairman of the art department.; Private South Carolina Collection Estimate: $3,000 - $5,000

John Biggers was born in North Carolina to a father who was an educator, preacher, and shoemaker. His mother was a domestic worker in white households. He attended Hampton University after high school and it was there he first learned about the influence of African American artists and the social and religious context from which their work grew. The museum at Hampton University (Hampton Institute at the time) had a significant collection of work by African artists as well. He studied with both Charles White and Elizabeth Catlett. He was influenced by the Harlem Renaissance, Mexican Muralists, American Regionalists and the artistic currents of his place and time. In 1943 Biggers was drafted and joined the Navy and that same year his work was included in an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Biggers enrolled in Pennsylvania State University where he earned a Masters and PhD. It is difficult to overstate the importance of Biggers work in educating a generation of African American artists who came through Texas Southern University. He received a UNESCO fellowship in 1957 and was one of the first African American artists to travel to Africa under the auspices of UNESCO. It was a formative experience for both he and his wife Hazel and they returned many times. His own work thoughtfully and poignently connects the mythology of his African roots, the life he experienced in the south and the modern currents of mid-Century America.

It is impossible to capture the career of a great artist in so few words. We are pleased to have the opportunity to present this figural drawing.

The Flight of Night features in one of the most enigmatic stories in nineteenth century painting. Hunt’s planned large scale mural for the New York State Capitol was a landmark in mural painting, but was sadly plagued by tragedy, and we can now only know it from drawings and oil studies such as this one. Although completed in 1879, the artist perished not long after, and the mural itself was destroyed ten years after completion. It has fascinated art historians ever since. Thomas Burnham painted two known versions of both Boys Playing Paw-Paw and a related genre work, The Young Artist, one in horizontal and the other in vertical format. The two horizontal works share compositional elements with other genre works by Burnham, such as First State: Election Day, 1837. The blue linsey-woolsey farmer’s frock, as worn by the young black laborer, can be contrasted against the tailored jackets and caps worn by the white youths, clearly members of the burgeoning middle-class; both elements appear in The Young Artist, referred to above. He exhibited one version of Boys Playing Paw-Paw at the National Academy of Design, the Boston Athenaeum, and the Apollo Association between 1840- 1842, which is believed to be the vertical format version now in the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College.

Lawson”, oil on Masonite, 20 x 24 in.; fine ornate carved gilt wood and composition frame, 30 x 33-1/2 in., scattered small areas of crackle, possible slight surface dirt; frame in good condition overall, small areas of wear Provenance: Vose Galleries, Boston, Massachusetts, April 20, 1972 (label verso); to Private Collection, 1972 until the present Estimate: $30,000 - $50,000

For an inn-depth discussion of Lawson’s work during this period, this scene in particular, see Boyle, Richard J. 1974. American Impressionism. Boston: New York Graphic Society. p. 224, illus. Boyle places this work among the artist’s best: “...but when he returned to America to “see what I can do,” he found subject matter which suited him. He painted in and around New York City, in Washington Heights for example, and along the Hudson and Harlem rivers. Like Twatchtman, Lawson painted a great many winter scenes, again tackling the problem of white as a color, but unlike Twatchman’s, Lawson’s style is fairly “rugged.” Harlem River and Melting Snow, Early Spring are painted in the style for which he is best known: the paint is applied as a thick impasto of jewel-like color, referred to by critic F.K. Price as a “palette of crushed jewels.” Lawson’s work is both sensitive and strong, and he was the only member of the Eight to paint pure landscape; but it is, like the painting of Glackens, an extension of impressionist principles. He always did think of himself as a traditionalist, yet his textual and chromatic variations were more personal and postimpressionalist.”

Provenance: (possibly) Cavalier Gallery, Greenwich, Connecticut (label verso, n.,d.); Hollis Taggart Galleries, New York (label verso); Private Collection, New Jersey, acquired directly from the above, 2005

Estimate: $30,000 - $50,000

This painting is included in Patrick Bertrand’s catalogue raisonne of the artist’s work. The current example shows the Sainte-Radegonde Catholic Church in Giverny. Originally constructed in the 11th century and rebuilt in the 16th century, it sits on a hillside and was a popular subject for the American Impressionists, including Theodore Robinson (Old Church at Giverny, 1891, Smithsonian American Art Museum), Theodore Wendel (Flowering Fields, Giverny, 1889, Terra Foundation for American Art), and Dawson Dawson-Watson (Giverny: Road Looking West toward Church, circa 1890, Terra Foundation for American Art), as well as Butler. He and Suzanne Hoschedé were married at the Church, as commemorated in Robinson’s The Wedding March (1892, Terra Foundation for American Art). Claude Monet is buried in its graveyard.

In Church, Giverny, the lush landscape and sky are awash in bright sunlight while the painterly and engaging impasto distributed across the paint surface demonstrates Butler’s enormous admiration for Monet’s Impressionist technique. The reverse bears the stamp of Parisian canvas maker Paul Foinet, whose canvases were sold at the Ancien Hotel Baudy, a small guest house and café in Giverny frequented by many artists.

This mask is one of the legendary group collected by Dr. George Harley (18941966), an anthropologist and medical missionary to Liberia in the early to mid-20th century. Dr. Harley’s early work regarding traditional Liberian tribes is perhaps the most extensive research done on these tribes. He is most known for the over 1,000 masks he collected during his time there, many of which can be found in museum collections, including the Cleveland Musuem of Art and the Peabody Museum of Archeology and Ethnology. The holes surrounding the edges of this mask are for attaching fibers and beads to make hair or a beard and attaching capes and headdresses The delicate carvings along the face likely represent the ritual scarification practiced at the time. This particular mask was given to Blackwell Smith, relative of the current owner, by Dr. Harley in 1947.

This lot is accompanied by three publications: “Masks as Agents of Social Control in Northeast Liberia” by George. W. Harley, 1950.

“Notes on the Poro in Liberia” by George W. Harley, 1941.

“The Harley Masks of Northeast Liberia” by Louis T. Wells, Jr., 1977.

This lot is also accompanied by an extensive collection of historic black and white photos of Liberia at the time, taken by Dr, Harley and others, an example of which can be seen here.
