While at Yale, Riely wrote the exhibition catalogue for “Rowlandson Drawings from the Paul Mellon Collection” (1977) and biography and catalogue for the Bunbury exhibition at Gainsborough’s House (1983), among numerous other studies relating to British art and caricature of the 18th century.

Ludlow, Shropshire; Presumed Haddon Hall, England; Cider House Galleries, October 19, 2017, purchased for £3,200; Private Virginia Collection

Estimate: $800 - $1,200

This piece is modeled after a detail of the Peter Lely portrait of the same subject. Anthony Russel was a skilled portraitist, trained under his father and the court painter for William and Mary. Russel was known for making small-scale portrait replicas such as these for the noble and wealthy. The sitter, Barbara Palmer (nee Villiers), Duchess of Cleveland, was both admired for her beauty and despised for her calculating nature; John Evelyn, a noted diarist of the time, called her “the curse of the nation.” Coming from less fortunate circumstances, the Duchess married rich to improve her lot in life. Within the first three years of this marriage, she, upon visiting to deliver letters and money, caught the attention of monarch Charles II. She almost immediately was made his mistress and separated from her husband. After giving birth to his son, she was able to convince the monarch to appoint her as Lady of the Bedchamber to the Queen Consort, much to the chagrin of Charles II’s actual bride, Catherine of Braganza. Despite her questionable reputation, she was highly influential in the Court; she spent money extravagantly and her power at the height of her influence was such that she has been called “The Uncrowned Queen. “Diana, the late Princess of Wales, is perhaps the most well-known of her many descendants.

Estimate: $10,000 - $15,000

Neil Jeffares in Dictionary of Pastellists Before 1800 titles this work “Mrs. John Anstey, nee Helen Senior (1763-1837) and her sister Mrs. William Thomas, nee Nevillia Senior (1769-1842), the daughters of Ascanius William Senior of Pylewell, Southampton, circa 1773”.

Helen was born by his first wife, Helen and Nevillia by Charlotte Walter, his second. Ascanius William Senior went to India as a young man in 1753 to make his fortune as a “writer” and later a clerk in the employ of the East India Company. Rising in position and stature, he returned to England 13 years later, an extremely wealthy man, purchasing properties in London and in the countryside, including Pylewell in 1780. This portrait of his two oldest daughters was probably done in 1772 or 1773, based on the age of the two girls—shown here with a favorite lap-dog in a country setting. Daniel Gardner (1750-1805) was born in Westmorland and probably studied under George Romney in Kendal and again in London during the 1760s. From 177072, he was a student at the Royal Academy Schools and won a silver medal for figure drawing in 1771 and exhibited at the RA for the first time that same year. About 1772 he studied in Sir Joshua Reynold’s studio. His association and friendship with both Romney and Reynolds led to valuable society introductions and he soon became a fashionable and successful portrait painter. Unlike most other leading portrait artists, who worked in oil, Gardner developed his own medium, a combination of body color, pastel and oils-the three being combined in a single work, as seen in this fine portrait. His group portraits of children are especially notable for their warm and sentimental treatment and it is perhaps the uniqueness of his medium that heightened his success in such commissions.

Thomas Rowlandson was a close associate of Bunbury and the artist George Morland and they often collaborated and went on sketching tours together. There is a similar Rowlandson sketch- portrait of Morland, now in the British Museum and another in the Mellon Collection.

She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed-or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

Tony Roberts of Cider House opined it was Flemish School after a long-lost original by Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger. Gheeraerts the Younger was popular among nobles and monarchs, and as such, kept a staff of apprentices and assistants. It is believed this copy may be a reproduction by one of those assistants.

The sitter, Sir Francis Norris, was ill-tempered and of a volatile nature. He was twice convicted, first for manslaughter following his killing of a servant bystander during a duel (for which he was pardoned by James I), and then for striking one Lord Scope in the House of Lords. For this latter crime, he was jailed and made to apologize before the Prince. Overwhelmed by the embarrassment of this incident, he allegedly went to his home and shot himself with a crossbow, dying of the wound two days later. However, given his temperament and considerable number of disputes and enemies, some believe he may have been murdered.

The painting appears to be a variation on another by Pinelli with the same devices. It takes its title from the Italian epic La Gerusalemme Liberata (The Freed Jerusalem) by poet Torquato Tasso, which tells a fantastical and mythologized version of the First Crusade and Siege of Jerusalem of 1099 under Godfrey of Bouillon. Specifically, the work depicts the seventh octave of the poem’s second canto, in which, following a plan laid by the sorcerer Ismen, the Muslim King breaks into a church and steals a hidden icon of the Virgin Mary. The octave reads translated as follows: Advised thus, the king impatient Flew in his fury to the house of God, The image took, with words unreverent Abused the prelates, who that deed forbode, Swift with his prey, away the tyrant went, Of God’s sharp justice naught he feared the rod, But in his chapel vile the image laid, On which the enchanter charms and witchcraft said.

Fyodor Petrovich Tolstoy Bronze Plaque, Scene from Homer’s Odyssey (Russian 1783-1873)

Provenance: Private Collection

Estimate: $700 - $1,000

The scene in relief here is taken from book 22 of The Odyssey, in which Odysseus and his son Telemachus slay the men who have been squatting in their palace and trying to force Penelope, Odysseus’ loyal wife and Telemachus’ mother, into marriage. The portion of the epic in question, as translated by Robert Fagles, reads as follows;

With that he trained a stabbing arrow on Antinous.. just lifting a gorgeous golden loving cup in his hands, just tilting the two-handled goblet back to his lips, about to drain the wine-and slaughter the last thing on the suitor’s mind: who could dream that one foe in that crowd of feasters, however great his power, would bring down death on himself, and black doom? But Odysseus aimed and shot Antinous square in the throat and the point went stabbing clean through the soft neck and out-and off to the side he pitched, the cup dropped from his grasp as the shaft sank home, and the man’s life-blood came spurting out his nostrils-thick red jets-a sudden thrust of his foot-he kicked away the table-food showered across the floor, the bread and meats soaked in a swirl of bloody filth. The suitors burst into uproar all throughout the house when they saw their leader down. They leapt from their seats, milling about, desperate, scanning the stone walls-not a shield in sight, no rugged spear to seize. They wheeled on Odysseus, lashing out in fury: “Stranger, shooting at men will cost your life!” “Your game is over-you, you’ve shot your last!” “You’ll never escape your own headlong death!” “You killed the best in Ithaca-our fine prince!” “Vultures will eat your corpse!” Groping, frantic- each one persuading himself the guest had killed the man by chance. Poor fools, blind to the fact that all their necks were in the noose, their doom sealed. With a dark look, the wily fighter Odysseus shouted back, “You dogs! You never imagined I’d return from Troy- so cocksure that you bled my house to death, ravished my serving-women-wooed my wife behind my back while I was still alive! No fear of the gods who rule the skies up there, no fear that men’s revenge might arrive someday- now all your necks are in the noose-your doom is sealed!” Terror gripped them all, blanched their faces white, each man glancing wildly-how to escape his instant death? Only Eurymachus had the breath to venture, “If you, you’re truly Odysseus of Ithaca, home at last, you’re right to accuse these men of what they’ve done- so much reckless outrage here in your palace, so much on your lands. But here he lies, quite dead, and he incited it all-Antinous-look, the man who drove us all to crime! Not that he needed marriage, craved it so; he’d bigger game in mind-though Zeus barred his way-he’d lord it over Ithaca’s handsome country, king himself, once he’d lain in wait for your son and cut him down! But now he’s received the death that he deserved. So spare your own people! Later we’ll recoup your costs with a tax laid down upon the land, covering all we ate and drank inside your halls, and each of us here will pay full measure too- twenty oxen in value, bronze and gold we’ll give until we melt your heart. Before we’ve settled, who on earth could blame you for your rage?” But the battle-master kept on glaring, seething. “No, Eurymachus! Not if you paid me all your father’s wealth- all you possess now, and all that could pour in from the world’s end-no, not even then would I stay my hands from slaughter till all you suitors had paid for all your crimes! Now life or death-your choice-fight me or flee if you hope to escape your sudden bloody doom! I doubt one man in the lot will save his skin!”

Provenance: Private Collection

Estimate: $8,000 - $10,000

Born into a noble family in Ghent, Belgium, Joseph Charles de Blezer traveled to Paris to pursue a career in sculpture and the decorative arts. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts with Jean-Baptiste Clesinger and exhibited regularly at the official salon from 1863 to 1881. De Blezer’s colossal plaster bust of the great American abolitionist John Brown (1800-1859) was exhibited in the Salon of 1870. A bronze cast of this work was purchased in Paris in 1976 by a trustee of Oberlin College. It was a gift to the college, where it remains on view to this day. This bust of a handsome man, possibly Mulatto, was, perhaps, inspired by the abolitionist movement in the United States and in France in the mid-Nineteenth Century. In it, de Blezer used a compositional device similar to the one used in his portrait of John Brown; however, instead of a rope wrapped around the collar of the shirt, there is a scarf loosely draped around the unbuttoned collar. The young man stares directly at the viewer, with a look of confidence. He appears to be a man of quiet elegance and is depicted by de Blezer in a manner that recalls the work of the Renaissance sculptor Alessandro Vittoria (Trent 1525-1628 Venice)
