The Collection of Clare and Jared Edwards
June 5, 2024
Clare and Jared Edwards were passionate, erudite collectors who lived immersed in a world of 19th and 20th century American and European art and design. The first painting they ever bought was by Maxfield Parrish, a sophisticated choice that should not be surprising considering Jared’s art and architecture education at Yale, and Clare’s art historical background. They collected for fifty-five years, developing relationships of mutual respect with the best dealers in the country, filling their home with the paintings, furniture, and decorative arts they loved. They collected with their heads and their hearts, and everything they bought is a reflection of both their passion and their intellect. They remain vital members of both the Hartford and the greater New England art and architecture communities, with Jared being instrumental in historic preservation statewide. As influential and important as they are to the community, they are also generous patrons who have served countless art, architecture, and historic preservation organizations. Their fine art, furniture, jewelry, wine cellar, and all their various decorative arts are offered here at Brunk Auctions–a rare opportunity for aesthetes, connoisseurs, seasoned collectors, and first time buyers.

The following summer he travelled to Normandy, and ended up in the small coastal town of Larmor in 1884. He painted this charming scene with the imposing 16th century tower numerous times, and was especially drawn to the coastal atmosphere, which afforded the landscape painter a nearly unchanging, diffused light on his subject matter. A larger version of this scene is held by the Terra Foundation for American Art, Chicago, Illinois, object number 1991.1. A smaller version of the same scene in oil sold at Sotheby’s, New York, April 21, 2023 Cross-Currents in America: The Wolf Family Collection, for $50,800.

Born in 1891 in Massachusetts, first known as ‘Eddy’ Oakes, the little boy from Dorchester attracted children from all over Boston who wanted to buy his masterfully made kites, assembled by hand in his father’s backyard. Later in his lifetime, having studied under the masters of the Arts & Crafts movement, Frank Gardner Hale and Josephine Shaw, Oakes was poised by his early 20s to leave his mark. In 1923, the Metropolitan Museum of Art acquired a pendant by Oakes for its permanent collection, the first acquisition for the museum by a living artist. Outside of his memorable maker’s mark (that being just ‘OAKES’ within the outline of an oak leaf), his distinctive design elements and use of notched frames, serrated leaves, an array of often small semi-precious cabochon collet-set stones, arranged among foliate and floral motifs, make his work relatively easy to spot. Oakes usually finished the backs of his pieces with the same consideration as the front, making for highly sculptural pieces. Estimate: $1,500 - $3,000
In the 1999 Anni Albers retrospective exhibition catalog, Nicholas Weber comments on Anni Albers’ beginnings with photo offset prints and this series specifically, “When we began to discuss the possibility of her working with photo-offset, Anni proved to be a quick study. She decided that she would utilize the medium to make a print of two horizontal rectangular forms stacked one on top of the other. Each of the rectangles would contain a triangulated pattern, in keeping with the artist’s recent geometric experimentations, a design full of diversion and ins and outs, but deliberately lacking in internal symmetry or repetition. At the Bauhaus, Anni had been deeply moved by Wilhelm Worringer’s pivotal book Abstraction and Empathy; she embraced Worringer’s idea of abstraction providing the opportunity to create “visual resting places” removed from the often painful realities of the natural world. She was interested in art that was timeless and universal rather than art with specific links to a known locale or moment in history, or to the maker’s personal experience. This pure realm of art could provide some of the harmony that life itself sometimes lacked. To keep the viewer engaged, the new creation, like all of Anni’s compositions, had to eschew easy resolution; like Josef, Anni imbued abstraction with a certain tension, a perpetual in/out motion, an ongoing play between image and ground. The artist’s own persona was to fade in deference to the sacred realm of art and the comforts as well as the realities of the technical. Anni had no wish to reveal private emotions or the sometimes troubling fluctuations of her own mind and heart; she preferred, instead, to focus on the purely aesthetic and practical issues of printmaking, just as she had for many years reveled in the construction of textiles.”
