This painting has been attributed to Jacobello Del Fiore by two major scholars in the field, Leo Planiscig in 1926 and Max Friedlander in 1930 In 1970, Raimond Van Marle suggested the panel to be more likely from the Marches region. The Marches influenced Fiore’s late 14th century work as he began to grow away from his father’s influence into his own style. In a discussion of Marches region artist, Carlo Crivelli, Dr. Lauren Kilroy-Ewbank and Dr. Steven Zucker. state what is also true of Fiore’s work in this panel, “The use of gold in many of his paintings, including this Madonna and Child, also indicates the importance of the two holy figures. There is gold on their halos and clothes. The gold also speaks to the global flow of materials at this time, with much of the gold in Europe coming from sub-Saharan Africa. Mary’s elaborate brocade clothing also points to the textile trade at this time. The design on the painted brocade looks similar to designs found on textiles imported from the eastern or southern Mediterranean regions. In the 15th century, certain areas of Italy, including Florence, also became important centers of textile production, and often replicated designs of foreign textiles.”
The pomegranate is considered a symbol of Christ’s passion, whose red kernels symbolize the blood shed by Jesus Christ for the salvation of humanity. This painting is a copy of a composition in a drawing by Raphael that was known through a 16th-century engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi. According to a curator at The British Museum, London, Raimondi’s engraving is “related to three drawings by Raphael, circa 1505/7, presumably for an unexecuted painting. The drawing likely also provided a model for Ugo da Carpi’s chiaroscuro xylograph of the same subject, see Bartsch XII.43.22. The design was lifted complete by Bernardino Ricca for his altarpiece of the ‘Deposition’ of 1521 in San Pietro al Po, Cremona.”

Clayton Davie and Family
Estimate: $20,000 - $30,000
A 1982 doctoral dissertation by Robert Simon titled, Bonzino’s Portraits of Cosimo I De Medici, includes this portrait. He concludes that this is a copy after an unlocated “seven button” autograph work by Bronzino A technical analysis of the painting was performed by Gianluca Poldi in 2012 for the sellers, Carlo & Cesare Bianchini of Argos Arte. The report, in Italian, accompanies the lot. It was determined that the pigments date from the 16th century and are the same type used by Bronzino. The painting is therefore believed to be from Bronzino’s workshop but not by the master’s hand.

Brunk Auctions would like to thank Dr. Suzanne Laemers, Curator of Early Netherlandish Painting, RKD, The Hague for her assistance with this painting. She states this Virgin and Child composition ”is a typical ‘in between painting’: it shows stylistic and compositional characteristics of several artists such as the Master with the Parrot, the Master of the Female Half-Lengths, the Master of the Prodigal Son and even Joos van Cleve. Obviously, in the mid-16th century in the Southern Netherlands there was a market for compositions showing a tender Mary with a playful child on her lap. There are many examples of paintings tending to multiple artists. I would suggest an attribution to an anonymous artist working in the circle of the Master with the Parrot and the Master of the Female Half-Lengths, around 1530-1550.

Circle or Studio of Giovanni Lanfranco (Italian, 1582-1647)
Peter and Christ on the Sea of Galilee (or Christ Saves Peter from Sinking in the Water), after Giovanni Lanfranco’s fresco for the Navicella Altar (Inventory No. 44238) in St Peter’s Basilica, The Vatican, Rome by Giovanni Lanfranco, unsigned, circa 1650, oil on canvas, 45-1/4 x 34-1/2 in., (114.3 x 86.36 cm.); modern gilt wood frame, 52-1/4 x 41 in., lined, restretched on late 19th/early 20th century stretcher, punctures, patches at tears through lining and canvas, losses at bottom, areas of retouch, some points of overcleaning, stretcher marks, original canvas ground appears to be 18th century or possibly earlier, crackle, craquelure
Provenance: Collection of a Virginia Gentleman
Estimate: $18,000 - $24,000
This painting is a fine period copy of Giovanni Lanfranco’s original fresco for the Navicella Altarpiece. No full oil sketches are known for this composition. The present composition has variations which include the addition of angels, water, and an outcropping on the right side. Lanfranco’s original creates a powerful composition with figures extending to either side so the addition portion is an interesting inclusion and one that does not appear in the early engravings or the subsequent replacement of the fresco. The Vatican museum, in discussion of this fresco states, “In August 1625, Giovanni Lanfranco petitioned the pope to paint the altarpiece in the New Sacristy. His request was denied, and instead Urban VIII assigned him the job of replacing Castello’s altarpiece with another version of the same subject. Lanfranco began work on the altarpiece in 1627. In view of the deterioration of Castello’s altarpiece and of the other five altarpieces painted on slate, Lanfranco opted for a different medium and painted in true fresco. The work was completed by September 17, 1628.
Despite the fact that it was painted in fresco, Lanfranco’s Navicella soon showed signs of deterioration, and in 1640 the artist offered to return to Rome in order to “improve” it. The work was restored in 1662 by Raffaele Vanni and again between 1687 and 1694 by Giuseppe Montano. By 1721, it was detached from the wall in an operation that was only partially successful, as the upper portion of the composition was lost in the process, and transferred to the benediction loggia, where it hands today. In 1726, a mosaic replica of Lanfranco’s original painting, executed by Pietro Paolo Cristofari after a cartoon by Niccolo Ricciolini, was installed over the altar. A year later, in 1727, Pope Benedict XIII dedicated the altar to God in honor of St Peter, placing inside it relics of Sts. Mansuetus and Honestus.” -The Vatican Brunk Auctions would like to thank expert, Erich Schleier, who stated, “In my opinion this painting is not by Lanfranco, but is a copy of good painterly quality by some able painter of the second half of the 17th century after Lanfranco’s fresco or after one of the engravings after the altar- fresco.. It would be interesting to try to find out who could have painted this copy, which is of notable quality.”
Brunk Auctions also thanks Dr. Alessandra Rodolfo, Curator, Vatican Museum for her assistance regarding the history of Lanfranco’s fresco.

Many versions of this subject were similarly addressed in the 17th century by Italian artists. Several elements such as the dramatic display of the central figure of St. Stephen, the overpowering and violent depiction of those who are stoning the Saint, and the angels with the awaiting crown and branch, symbol of martyrdom seem close to the composition by Cigoli.

Brunk Auctions would like to thank Dr. Fred Meijer for confirming the authenticity of this painting as an early work by Carstian Luyckx.
He states that this painting ”is a relatively early cartouche still life by Carstian Luyckx, probably from the early 1650s, still much in the manner of Daniel Seghers. Luyckx’s first name is clearly legible on the painting. There is a rather similar cartouche still life dated 1650 in Warsaw: https://rkd.nl/ imageslite/521791 and this one is also quite similar: https://rkd.nl/imageslite/521818 and there is also this signed early flower vase, also in Warsaw.”

Brunk Auctions would like to thank General Director, prof. dr. Chris Stolwijk and Ellis Dullaart MA, Curator Dutch and Flemish Old Master Painting, of the RKD, The Hague for their information concerning this painting. According to their research this painting ”was shown at the Exhibition of Dutch Paintings of the Seventeenth Century, New York,1931. A second variant of the composition is documented in our files, which was last reported in a private Belgian collection and previously attributed to Brouwer as well (https://rkd. nl/imageslite/364142). In the 2006 catalogue raisonné on Joos van Craesbeeck (1605/061660/61), upon first hand inspection, the author discusses the variant as a possible early work by the artist. She relates it to a monogrammed painting in the Museo del Prado, which has a similar composition with half-length figures and caricaturized facial types (https:// www.museodelprado.es/coleccion/obra-de-arte/el- terceto-burlesco/e4c514c3-742b-4e63b621-d381f9811fe0?searchid=3ec20149-5d9f-18ef-341e-480acd77d045), and to a painting – present whereabouts unknown – which features similar motifs such as the sheet with tobacco and a similarly rendered glass of beer (https://rkd.nl/imageslite/55410). On the basis of the old photographs of your painting in our files, the author tentatively listed your painting as a possible early work by Van Craesbeeck as well (K. de Clippel, Joos van Craesbeeck. Een Brabants genreschilder, 2006, vol. 1, p. 294-295, under no. C4; vol. 2, ill. 127a). And after having studied the submitted photographs, we tend to agree with this and think your painting was executed by the same hand as its rectangular variant indeed. Also, we observe the same manner of execution in the hands and faces as in the abovementioned Prado painting. On the basis of these observations, we think describing your painting as attributed to Joos van Craesbeeck, would be most appropriate.”

Rare and Important Group of Six Mythological Scenes by Luca Giordano (Italian, 1634-1705)

Provenance: Suida-Manning Collection, New York, by 1964: Private Collection until 2007; with Robert Simon Fine Art, New York, purchased in 2007 for $300,000 (lot accompanied by documents provided to Dr. Davie from Robert Simon, a redacted request for a transfer of funds for payment, with labels verso); The Estate of Dr. J. Clayton Davie and Family
Estimate: $25,000 - $35,000
In documents supplied to Dr. Davie, Robert Simon states, “This set of six small copper panels is a remarkable testimony to Luca Giordano’s versatility and virtuosity. While justly celebrated for his grand compositions, here the artist has rethought themes he treated in larger formats and adapted them to an intimate scale. Without sacrificing thematic and expressive elements, Giordano organizes his compositions rationally and legibly, giving greater prominence to the protagonists while describing them with bravura brushwork refined to the scale of miniatures. While Giordano painted on copper, particularly during his sojourn in Spain, this set is unique in its diminutive size, evidently the smallest fully realized project of the artist.”
A cabinet on stand by the artist’s workshop, dated circa 1670, is inset with miniature painted panels. It is an extraordinary piece created in Naples and held by the Dubrovnik Cultural History Museum.
