Note from Stonington Gallery: Entuk is a cultural superhero. A woman who was grieving the loss of a child is crying as she walks along a beach one day. Her nose is full of mucus and she blows her nose and as it comes out it lands on an empty mussel shell. It starts to move, grow and change shape. It assumes the shape of a small boy and grows up to be a powerful leader in the tribe. This is a story that has been illustrated by Joe David (Nuu-chahnulth) throughout his career in multiple media, and continues to inspire him. Singletary and Skyriver have both been mentored by Joe David throughout their careers, and consider him both a guiding light and close friend. This version of Entuk continues the retelling of this story through new generations.

Fernand Leger (French, 1881 - 1955), like Picasso, Braque, Miro and others, was one of the artists who contributed paintings to Marie Cuttoli to be woven in tapestries in the 1920s.
In the 1930s and 1940s Leger continued to work with weavers, notably the Aubusson atelier of Tabard Freres et Soeurs, which is now extinct. In the 1950s artist Victor Vasarely who had worked with French gallerist Densie Rene persuaded Leger to join him, Jean Arp, Le Corbusier, Wassily Kandinsky and other artists to join him in creating tapestry editions of their images for the gallery. Leger also worked with Rene and Jacqueline de la Baume Durrbach, who wove tapestries for their friend Picasso as part of his arrangement with Nelson Rockefeller.
Leger’s widow, the former Nadia Khodossievitch, a tireless promoter of the artist’s work after his death, commissioned tapestries after Leger’s images working with several notable weavers including Yvette Cauquil-Prince, Suzanne Goubley and various ateliers including Pinton and Tabard Freres et Soeurs. Many of these tapestries were donated to the Musee National Fernand Leger in Biot, France, which Nadia Leger created with George Bauquier and to other museums.
The Leger estate has remained active in tapestry and has continued to allow re-editions of older tapestries, notably several commissioned by New York gallerist Jane Kahan starting in about 2000 and woven by atelier Pinton.
Fernand Leger also was responsible for the primary designs for the rugs - termed “tapis” in French - that Marie Cuttoli sold at her fashionable Paris shop even before she began working with tapestry.”

”Always do what requires the greater courage from you.”
- Mary Bauermeister
One of the luminaries of avante garde art, Bauermeister was also a champion of music, creating a safe environment for musicians in the early 1960s for playing their experimental music. In her obituary for The New York Times by Will Heinrich, (2023), he details her early history he states,
”Explaining how she became a visual artist, Ms. Bauermeister said: ‘I was musical, so I could have become a musician, too. But I wasn’t allowed to play music in a minor key - I was considered too young.’ She quit the piano at 17, and she stopped writing poetry =which, like the piano, had been a daily practice - at 22. ‘But finding explanations for things was something I’ve always done by drawing,’ she said, ‘and by that I mean drawing and thinking.’”
Her work was collected early on after arriving in New York by the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum and the Whitney Museum, as well as by the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington. The intricate details of her work are profound, refusing to fit in a definitive box.

Judy Rifka, Gray Painting Series (New York, born 1945)
Untitled, 1980, layered acrylic on canvas, 24 x 30 in.; unframed, original stretcher and tacking edge, surface dirt and abrasions
Provenance: Private Collection
Estimate: $600 - $900
A few varied series of ‘grey paintings’ that hang in a row were done in the 1978-80 period, appearing to be collages but are only press type letters and then lots of acrylic systematically applied in layers creating shapes invoking fans, stencils, masks and puzzle pieces, depending on the series. Rifka calls those ‘trying to animate moving geometric shapes with color of human emotion.’ Shapes are rendered with a sense of humor at a time when ‘art, and music, and night life encapsulated a changing of the guard from pure formalism’. In a video piece from that same era, the 1980 collaboration ‘Slap Pals’ was played on video screens in New York City clubs such as Danceteria and the Mudd Club and then featured in a show of visionary video work at The New Museum. Bruce Tovsky and Robert Raposo composed the music. Julius Koslowski and I threw down acetates onto a TV Screen, and shot animation in Super 8.”
It makes sense that an artist who works in layers and movement, as well as time, would experiment in video. She provides images to animators. She animates them herself and works with musicians. In fact, Rifka is as good with moving images as she is with paint. In fact, the colored forms from the early plywood paintings turned into a video were projected on a giant screen at the opening, bringing the 70’s and her current work full together as the shapes and the viewer seemed to spin on multiple axes.”

Speaking of his inspiration for his figurative work Beck says, “My wife, Valerie, got me a book by Yve-Alain Bois about the competitive relationship between Picasso and Matisse. Their artistic dialogue about the figure has fired my imagination, especially the way they shared and borrowed images and ideas from one another, as well as from history and literature.”
This sculpture was inspired by the work of the same name by Brancusi. She is a figure in three parts, each repeating the motif that originates with Princess X. The cart, or the wheels with the work alludes to forms or ideas that should move, but do not of their own accord.
Beck taught at Pilchuck, the Appalachian Center for Crafts 1989 to 1991, and Penland School of Crafts 1991 to 1994. His work is held by major museums including the Asheville Art Museum. This lot is accompanied by three booklets on the artist.

”Kumi Korf’s artists’ books are not only concerned with structure, but also with printmaking and the relationship of illustration to text. They are extremely complicated, very rich. I feel they are good representations of a certain kind of work that’s being done in America. So that’s why her particular books have been added to the Library of Congress.
”Her books have interesting elements of construction, questioning how a book operates, but more importantly and I think most expressively of Kumi is the intense quality of the prints. They are both an important aspect of her Japanese background, but they’re being done in a very modern American way. Her prints tell the story, but they also move you through the book. And because many of her prints are large, and broken up, they have an abstract level to them that reads as a very modern American book. They document the Book Arts movement in America on many different levels.”

Estimate: $700 - $1,000
Full Circle is a powerful exploration into the cycles of faith and belief from the first moments of obsession through the experience of deepest doubts, and ultimately passing through the place of peace where the mind and heart are (re) united before the endless cycle starts again. A large box-mounted wheel rotates continuously beneath a series of windows to reveal the many stages of the faith cycle with concurrent letterpress images of the human body. One window in the wheel also reveals a tray with compartments containing simple every-day objects that take on varied and potent meanings for each individual reader as they attempt to connect or reconcile the complex spiritual world in their imaginations with the material reality before them. Three drawers open from a slot in the outer tray, cradling pop-up diagrams which act as three checkpoints along the cycle. One of Chen’s most advanced book structures to date, the ingenious wheel is not only a marvel of book craft but also an opportunity for a level of self-exploration leading the reader toward the realization that meaning may be encountered within the process of seeking.” - Flying Fish Press

From the Prologue: “I only recently left North Carolina, having lived in both Carolinas my entire life. It seems ludicrous now, but I somehow thought I was a city girl, that I cared nothing about quiet, warmth, trees, and the absence of crowds — all of the things a city lacks. North Carolina kept its arms around me for so long I began to hate its comfort. I struggled against it and like a good parent it let me go, knowing all along I would miss it. It bided its time, doing what it does and let the longing build in me. The realization of what I’d lost crept up on me, caught me off guard like steam after a cool rain. These are the details, the myths and the handwriting on the wall — the how and why it wriggled its way into my heart. (The text above was written in 1998. It is all still true, except that we left North Carolina fourteen years ago.)”
