Community Partner: K2C
It Takes a Village to Provide Home Care
By Tikila Morgan, Case Manager
Kennedy Companion Care, LLC (K2C) offers home health care services in Brunswick, New Hanover, and Pender counties. BSRI partners with this community service to serve the home health care needs of our clients. We spoke with K2C founder April Straughn. Buzz: Tell us a little about yourself and your agency. Straughn: I was born and raised in Wilmington. I graduated from Lakeside High School in 1997 and then joined the U.S. Army. I completed three combat tours to Iraq and Afghanistan and retired honorably after 20 years of service. My family has always been caregivers that assist the elderly, which inspired me to start Kennedy Companion Care. From the beginning in February 2021, I could see the need for jobs within my community as well as the lack of care for the elderly. Buzz: What is the mission of your agency? Straughn: The agency’s mission is “Promoting Quality of Life through Quality Services!”
Buzz: What services do you offer? Straughn: We offer post-surgical assistance, companionship/sitter, physical disability support, care for dementia patients, meal preparation, and transportation. Buzz: How did you find out about BSRI?
Straughn: When I started K2C, I planned how I would accomplish the task of gaining clients. I used the internet to look up senior centers and began calling all the centers to offer my services. After a few months I received a called for respite services from BSRI. Buzz: Describe your management style. Straughn: My management style is collaborative, based on the concept that it takes a village. I work closely with the caregivers; we are a team personally and professionally. The caregivers are continuously learning from each other and providing feedback on training to ensure we provide excellent care to our clients. Employee satisfaction as well as client satisfaction is important. Buzz: Are you accepting new referrals? How would someone interested in your services contact your agency? Straughn: We are accepting new clients! Call 910-7691455 or contact us at kennedycompanion.com. Our office is at 100 Old Eastwood Rd, Ste. 108, Wilmington.
