Aging Your Way in May

We celebrate Older Americans Month in May. This year’s theme is “Age My Way.”

Older adults play a vital role in our community. We see many retirees who choose to volunteer their time, and others continue to remain in the workforce. Everyone is unique.

The Brunswick Center at Shallotte has a diverse group of participants. Our center continues to grow in both the nutrition and health promotion programs.

We are thankful for our volunteers who do a wide range of work such as instructing classes, assisting with kitchen prep, and delivering Meals on Wheels.

Nell Gore Arrives First

Amelia “Nell” Gore has volunteered with Coastal Carolina Active Living in Shallotte for nearly six years. Nell, who will turn 76 this month, is the first volunteer at the center in the mornings around 7:15 a.m. She makes three pots of coffee and tidies up before participants fill the congregate dining area. Once the coffee is prepared, she eats her breakfast and knits until there is an activity class.

“Oh, I enjoy taking the classes here like Line Dancing, Geri-Fit, Aerobics, using the gym and the day trips,” Nell says. “But my favorite thing to do is to make that coffee and have it ready for the people.” We also depend on Nell to help in the kitchen, sit at the front desk, and call bingo.

It's typical to see Nell serving some of the participants who have a hard time standing in line or emptying trays.

“I just like to keep busy and do things and socialize. I enjoy volunteering and hope to continue to serve.” Nell is aging her way!

Tom Swier at the Tables

One of our frequent billiards players is Tom Swier. A retired pharmacist, Tom maintains his license and volunteered during the pandemic to give vaccine shots. Now he works part time and splits his time between Brunswick County and Guilford County as a truck driver. He is a professional billiards player.

“It’s very important to me to stay active, meet new friends, and not become isolated,” Tom says. “When I worked full time, it was easy to socialize. When you retire, you have to push yourself to get out of the house and do something. I really love the Shallotte Center and the billiards room. The guys playing pool are very good players and professional, and I plan to be here more often now that you’re open until 7 p.m. on Thursday!”

We have a weekly billiards tournament every Thursday. Tom is aging his way by staying active, choosing to remain in the workforce, shooting pool at our center, making new friends, and going to the gym five times a week.

We try to offer a variety of activities and programs for residents 50 years and older. We serve lunch daily at 11:30 a.m. If you are interested in registering for a class or lunch, call 910-754-2300.
