BSRI STAFF MEMBER OF THE MONTH
Donna Ruth Morgan volunteers with Friends of the Library in Southport and Oak Island, Boiling Spring Lakes Library Commission, Brunswick County Library Board of Trustees, and the N.C. Friends of the Public Library. She inherited a love of reading and shares that enjoyment with her four children and three grandchildren. Donna reviews some good books by female authors on page 16. Pat Naughton and his family moved from Richmond, Va. to Winding River Plantation in Brunswick County in 2017 after Pat retired as a mechanical engineer at a nuclear power plant. He has been an avid gardener for 35 years and is a Brunswick County Extension Master Gardener Volunteer. This month Pat shows us how to plan a container garden. Jan Morgan-Swegle moved here from Ohio 11 years ago after retiring from senior management roles in banking and insurance. She has been writing for over 40 years and has been published in numerous newspapers and magazines, focusing on stories related to family, women in business, and community events. She and her husband, Tony, live in Compass Pointe with their dog, Dixie. Read Jan’s story about women’s history in Brunswick County on page 10. After retiring from leadership roles in engineering and information technology at a major confectionary manufacturer, Beth Klahre and her husband Jeff relocated to North Carolina. Beth has been enjoying reading on the beach, learning to play the harp, and writing human-interest stories. She is also a volunteer board member of the Friends of the Library of Oak Island and Southport. She lives in Southport with her husband and their dog, Betsy. Beth gives us a peek into a new apothecary shop on page 14.
Tonya Barnes Assistant Director The Brunswick Center at Shallotte Tonya’s position consists of handling all activities at the center and scheduling presentations and entertainment. Her very first job was as a waitress at Red Lobster, and her very first car was a Hyundai Excel hatchback. Tonya is definitely a “dog person.” “I studied as a Medical Assistant in college,” Tonya says. “I joined BSRI for a more fulfilling job. I love what this organization stands for, and I absolutely love the senior community!”

Oh, yes, of course there is still the yellow-green coating of pine pollen to sneeze our way through but I absolutely love seeing what I call the “greening of spring.” You may or may not have noticed it happening, but it’s the small grouping of days where warm weather creates nature’s decision to throw off winter’s cloak and push those green buds out of the tree branches, giving them a bright green aura. From there, spring is coming, and we flock like lemmings to the local garden centers and nurseries for our spring plantings.
Raised Bed Beauty If you have the urge to put your hands in the dirt or see things grow and thrive in soil, come check out the raised bed gardens that are waiting for your touch at several of the Coastal Living centers. Our gardens have been designed to make it easier to plant, grow, and harvest. They were built with the support of community partners like the Brunswick Wellness Coalition, N.C. Cooperative Extension, and local master gardeners, along with input from participants and center staff. These gardens are part of our ongoing commitment to healthy eating and living as we age. We plan to offer gardening classes where you can learn about

Pam has logged countless hours in our garden over the past two years committing herself to its success. She has planted, weeded, watered, and harvested vegetables for our center participants throughout this past year. We are grateful for her help and support each season. Will it be for those who love to garden, growing for themselves or others, to enjoy the fruits of their labor, like a community garden and farmers market?

et ready for a wonderful story of love, fate, reconnection—and maybe even a little divine intervention.
Last year, two Shallotte High School Class of ’57 alums met and reconnected at Jennies Branch Baptist Church in Shallotte after many years far apart, growing their own separate families, leading successful careers, retiring, and eventually being widowed. Loretta Todd (née Hewett) and Gene Edwards have known each other since attending the first and second grade together at the Waccamaw School in Ash. But then Gene moved to Shallotte and they didn’t attend class together until 8th grade, when the school district rezoned and sent Loretta to school in Shallotte. They went on to attend Shallotte High School and graduated together before going their separate ways. While in school, they never dated, although Gene admits to having a crush on Loretta back then. Gene served 23 year in the U.S. Air Force, managed a Bonanza restaurant as well as his own business in the
Congratula ons and all the best to Lore a and Gene!
Fayetteville area, and had five boys. Enough for his own basketball team! Loretta stayed in the Shallotte area, married, and had a beautiful family of her own. She worked at the BB&T Bank in Shallotte for 10 years and later at the Calabash EMS Thrift Store which became the BSRI Thrift Store in 2015. She worked in Calabash for four years before transferring to our Shallotte store when it opened in 2019. She retired a year later, but still helps us out with jewelry repair and upholstery repair. After not having seen each other since high school, they met and got reacquainted last year while attending church at Jennies Branch Baptist, perhaps due in part to a little divine intervention. Their affection grew: Apparently Gene still had a crush on Loretta. They fell in love and were married on Jan. 16 at Jennies Branch Baptist Church.
Two childhood friends a ended the Waccamaw School together, as shown in their 2nd grade class photo. Lore a Hewe Todd is the first one on the le# in the front row and Gene Edwards is the first one on the le# in the second row. Right behind her! Close back then and even closer now!
The wedding took place on a cold and rainy day, but was well attended by friends and family. Also in attendance were Loretta’s BSRI Thrift Store colleagues Lois Little, Judy McCarthy, Jack and Charlotte Csernecky, along with Mike and Dorrie McGurn. It was a beautiful wedding worthy of the long journey that they took through life to end up back together in each other’s arms. Seems like there’s a movie script here, any takers?

Women’s History in Brunswick County
MARCH 2022
AN UNCONVENTIONAL WOMAN
The Story of Joy Arnold Gregory By Jan Morgan-Swegle “There is no limit to what we, as women, can accomplish.” —Michelle Obama When former first lady Michelle Obama said this, she could well have been speaking about Joy Arnold Gregory of Southport. Arnold has accomplished much during her life— many “firsts” for women during the era of World War II. Joy was born in 1925 and was an only child, unconventional from the start. As a young girl, her father taught her to “hunt, fish, and fight.” She was known as “Tuffy” because there wasn’t anything she was afraid of trying. Her parents, especially her mother, didn’t impose traditional gender roles of the era on Joy, because she herself didn’t follow them. Her father piloted shrimp boats and tug boats. Her mother was a “Shore Captain” in the family’s charter boat business and a weather watcher. Her mother told Joy, “If you enjoy your work and you’re good at it, do it.”
Southport Romance By the age of 16, Joy was a volunteer hostess at the Southport USO. She was not afraid to walk home in the evenings after her shift, but one night, she felt like someone was following her. She turned quickly and asked the young sailor who was behind her what he was doing. He said, “I’ve been watching

you all night. I like you so I thought I’d walk you home.” Joy pondered this for a minute and replied, “Well, if you’re going to walk me home, get up here and walk with me, not behind me.” And that was the start of her love story with George Gregory. George was from Pennsylvania, stationed at Fort Caswell near Southport, on the USS Ruby. He became a frogman, a very dangerous job to have in the Navy, but he volunteered for it and was proud to have been selected for this role. George left Southport to complete his frogman training—but not before marrying Joy. He served in Okinawa and Iwo Jima. Now 17 and married to a military man, Joy decided to go to one of the shipyards in the area
and become a welder to help the war effort.
Shipyard Safety Joy and the other women at the shipyard were required to wear long pants and, in the interest of safety, they were never to roll up their pant legs. One hot summer day when she was welding, deciding the rules weren’t for her, she rolled her pant legs up to let the breeze cool her down. Immediately hot metal hit her legs and burned her. “Well, I jumped right up and took off my pants then I headed for the horse trough that held water for cooling metal and jumped right in. I drew a crowd that day,” she laughed.

Women’s history in Brunswick County
After her welding career, Joy became a business owner. She owned a bar, a dress shop, and a trailer park, all while working as clerk of court. She had no idea that moving to the sheriff’s office would result in her making history in Brunswick County.
A Woman Deputy The incoming sheriff of Brunswick County recruited Joy to be the first woman deputy on the police force. Deputy Sheriff Joy Gregory started her career without a police uniform and had to use her own car to patrol the area, but she kept a two-shot Derringer in her pocket at all times. Joy did well in her role, eventually becoming chief deputy and jailor. There were times when she had to travel to transport people to jail or for medical reasons.
“The sheriff always sent me because he said that a man would fight a man, but a man wouldn’t fight a woman,” she said. Her only trouble was with a woman she had to pick up and transport for treatment. The sheriff told Joy to put a bottle of wine under the front seat. Joy thought that was a bit odd, but she trusted the sheriff and followed his instructions. When she arrived to pick up the woman, she found her combative, verbally abusive, and definitely a flight risk. Joy wrestled her to the car, locked the door and asked her if she wanted some wine. “Of course,” the woman responded. Joy gave the woman the bottle and drove her, now happy and calm, straight to treatment. Unfortunately, when they arrived, with no uniform and a gun in her pocket, the treatment facility thought Joy was the patient and tried to confine her.
The Coastal Buzz
11
Joy always knew she was destined to be a strong woman. She said, “I was always strong willed, but my husband ‘got’ me. He accepted the person I was and so did I. Working made me feel important, and I was good at it.” Today, Joy lives quietly in a nursing facility surrounded by her memories of George, her daughters, and her career. She doesn’t consider herself a trailblazer for women—just a woman who did a job that she loved, and did it well. Thanks to Liz Fuller, president of the Southport Historical Society (SHS), for her assistance with this story. This information was taken from oral history interviews conducted by Fuller between 2019 and 2020, which are available for viewing on the SHS YouTube channel. For more information, contact SHS at info@ southporthistoricalsociety.org.
At 16, Joy was a volunteer hostess at the Southport USO. One evening she heard someone following her home from work. She turned quickly and asked the young sailor who was behind her what he was doing. He wanted to walk her home. That man was George Gregory, who became her husband.

Make It Work: Design Container Plantings By Pat Naughton
C
ontainer plants should meet one of three criteria: They should be thrilling, filling, or spilling. A stunning planter should contain all three. Before selecting plants, location and season must be considered. Certain plants do better in shade than full sun. Some plants can’t handle the heat of summer.
Thrillers Thrillers are tall plants that draw attention and add height to the container. Ornamental grasses are often overlooked as thrillers. Grasses do well in the summer in full sun. Dwarf fountain grass* has bottlebrush seed heads that, in the winter, have a nice wavy wheat flow. For a shady area, look for a tropical plant like elephant ear. Winter thrillers are a little more challenging since they must be able

to withstand a hard freeze. A few of winter thrillers that do well in this area include rosemary, nandina, and ivy topiary.
Fillers Fillers add body to the arrangement. Herbs make excellent filler plants. Perennial herbs such as oregano, mint, dill, fennel, tarragon, and chives* make excellent full-sun summer fillers. Plus, you get the extra benefit of fresh herbs for cooking.
This spring shade container features Japanese cedar, coral bells, and petunias.
For a shady area in the summer, try Cuban oregano.* It’s a member of the mint family with a strong fragrance of oregano when crushed. Add a little color with coleus* in a shady area and nasturtium* in a sunny area. Nasturtium is edible and adds color to salads.
Spillers Spillers flow down the container to give the entire container a full look. The classic spiller is creeping jenny.* This yellow-flowering plant does well year-round in full sun and partial shade. Another yellow flowering spiller is golden globe loosestrife.* A purple flower option is pennyroyal* which makes a colorful spiller. It is also called mosquito plant since its scent is quite pungent when crushed and repels mosquitos. All do well in the summer in full sun to partial shade. *All the plants marked with an asterisk will be available for sale at the Brunswick County Extension Master Gardener Volunteers “Spruce Up Your Container Sale” March 25, 9 a.m. till noon. The sale will take place at the growing pad behind the Brunswick County Extension Office, 25 Referendum Drive, Bolivia.

Books for Women’s History and Irish-American Heritage Months By Donna Ruth Morgan
O
ur March book reviews include lots of variety, all from female authors. You can request a copy of any of these books from your local Brunswick County library.
A dual celebration of Women’s History Month and Irish American Heritage Month is from one of this reviewer’s favorite fiction genres: Southern Gothic. The Complete Stories by Flannery O’Connor (1971) is an assemblage of creeping-up-onyou horrors. Over two dozen scary, fearsome glimpses into tortured souls from a talented writer whose mid-twentieth-century writings are for mature audiences only. Nutshell review: Best enjoyed in a well-lit room! The latest from prolific Latin American author Isabel Allende is a stream-ofconsciousness memoir/ meditation on her favorite theme of feminism. The Soul of a Woman (2021) draws on former works, making this effort a bit repetitive. Occasional heavy-handed social commentary and calls to activism are redeemed by reminisces of a life filled with joy and purpose. Nutshell review: A slim volume that packs a lot of wisdom into its pages. State of Terror (2021) is a highly readable collaboration between Hillary Rodham Clinton and Louise Penny. It’s a fast-moving, plot-driven melding of two distinct talents—clever and political (Clinton) and twisty and
thrilling (Penny). Can a beleaguered Secretary of State and her trusted (mostly) female compatriots outwit terrorists to save the country? Nutshell review: Superheroine, disaster-averting grandmother to the rescue! Going There (2021) is a mixed bag. Katie Couric’s honesty about family ties and the pain of losing loved ones is dragged down with gossip, name-dropping, and wealthflaunting. She bemoans lack of recognition as a serious journalist but displays animus toward anything outside her insular bubble. Nutshell review: This well-known television personality is labeled “perky,” but her memoir exposes a “mean girl” behind the smile. Americanon (2021) is a quirky view of U.S. history chronicled through a baker’s dozen bestselling books. An almanac as old as our country, a dictionary, a cookbook, and how-to guides all were designed to deliver messages about American beliefs and create archetypes of the ideal citizen. Nutshell review: Fascinating browse of influential characters from Ben Franklin and Noah Webster to Emily Post and Dale Carnegie, with commentary from author Jess McHugh.

March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month
C
olorectal cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the U.S. and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths. It affects all racial and ethnic groups and is most often found in
people ages 50 and older. Screening and early detection are vital. Medicare covers certain colorectal cancer screening services—ask a SHIIP counselor for
more information. Call Lead Case Manager/SHIIP Coordinator René Tarquinio at (910)754-6224. Colorectal cancer is preventable, treatable and beatable!
SHIIP VOLUNTEER COUNSELOR SPOTLIGHT: MIKE CARPER
M
ike Carper moved to Brunswick County from West Virginia after retiring from a career in general management and banking. He is an Army veteran and served during the Vietnam War. He and his wife, Vivian, enjoy spending time with family and traveling both domestically and abroad. Mike joined the BSRI SHIIP program five years ago as a SHIIP volunteer counselor. Most of his volunteer hours are spent at the Calabash Center, but he is quick to help wherever it is needed. During the most recent Open Enrollment Period, Mike counseled 57 Medicare beneficiaries. When asked what he likes the most about being a SHIIP counselor, Mike quickly replied that he enjoys the people that he meets. He loves seeing the look on their face when they realize how much money they will save by changing their drug or Medicare Advantage plan. BSRI SHIIP is happy to have Mike as a part of our team! —René Tarquinio Lead Case Manager/SHIIP Coordinator

Festivities on the Day of the Groundhog
T
he Brunswick Center at Shallotte celebrated Groundhog Day with a contest. “We sat out two boxes. Participants got to choose if the groundhog saw his shadow and we had six more weeks of winter, or if not, we'd have spring weather! It was like a lottery,” says Center Director Jillian Hardin. “On Tuesday, February 2nd, we took the box that was labeled ‘Groundhog sees shadow’ and Tonya drew a name from that box. Ms. Tressie Gore, who is nearly 100 years old, won the prize.”

Is the Senior Tar Heel Legislature for You?
T
he North Carolina Senior Tar Heel Legislature (STHL) assesses the needs of older citizens in a forum modeled after the North Carolina General Assembly. STHL then makes recommendations to the General Assembly about legislation to benefit older North Carolinians.
Delegate Needed
The STHL was established to:
Delegates and alternates must be age 60 or older. Could you be a Brunswick County delegate to the STHL?
• Provide information to senior
citizens on the legislative process and matters being considered by the General Assembly. • Promote citizen involvement
and advocacy concerning aging issues before the General Assembly. • Assess the legislative needs of
older citizens.
We currently have no delegate in Brunswick County; a new delegate is needed. There is one delegate to STHL from each of the 100 counties in North Carolina, and usually an alternate delegate too.
For more information or to apply, contact AAA Director Holly Pilson at 910-274-0339, 910-395-4553 ext. 204, or hpilson@capefearcog.org.
STHL is Meeting Online The first in a series of virtual information sessions was offered by
the Division of Aging and Adult Services (DAAS) in January, according to Rebecca Freeman, Consumer Affairs and Legislative Liaison for the DAAS. The webinar gave an overview of the new state budget and showed how STHL priorities were impacted. Freeman encourages candidates to apply who are open to using email and participating in virtual meetings. “STHL has had to pivot like everyone else, and some are really starting to see the benefits of technology,” Freeman says. The next general session of STHL is March 15, and it will be virtual. More information about the Senior Tar Heel Legislature can be found at www.facebook.com/ NCSTHLNC.
