Graduate Evanston Evanston, IL

Graduate hotels celebrate and commemorate each community’s energy, and become welcome retreats in the places that often host the best days of our lives. Photos: Steve Freihon Design: AJ Capital Partners Purchaser: Summa

Traditional decor and loads of charm Graduate Evanston is part of a collection of handcrafted-hotels located in lively college towns that have been thoughtfully created with the goal of providing memorable experiences for its guests. Housed within a 1920s property that’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Graduate Evanston pays homage to both the building’s history and its surrounding community, including Northwestern University.

Meet a team member Ben Alia What is your position at Bryan Ashley at what is your tenure? I am currently a Senior Project Team Manager and have been part of the Bryan Ashley team for five years. How do you enjoy spending your free time? I enjoy tinkering with my cars, hitting up local breweries with my girlfriend, and cheering on the Miami Dolphins and the Florida Gators. I also consider myself a “foodie” and enjoy planning vacations based on famous restaurants I want to experience.

The 119 guestrooms are full of fun nods to Northwestern University, the local area, and the state of Illinois. Turned wood spindles can be found on the headboard, nightstands, and desk which portray a residential vintage decor. Plush lounge chairs and sofas feature classic plaids, supple leathers, and rich velvets with classic button-tufting details. With Persian rugs covering the herringbone flooring and “Northwestern-purple” accents throughout, the entire space reflects the rich history of this university town.

Candice Luter Iowa-based fiber artist and interior designer, Candice Luter, creates custom wood and fiber decor. Influenced by her travels to Europe, she skillfully blends mid-century modern, art deco, and minimalist styles. In 2014, she began creating one-of-a-kind designs using her home studio’s remnant scraps of wood and fabric. What started as a hobby continued to build momentum and became Candice Luter | Art + Interiors, a collection of commercial art and approachable, unique home accents. Candice’s natural inclination to salvage, source, and recreate from what’s around her is the birthplace of her style. Rooted in that, her aesthetic emphasizes texture, light, and neutral colors. Texture is what gives character to a room, and her home, hospitality, and corporate decor is never short on touchable elements that draw people in. With work commissioned for significant retailers and hotel chains all over the country, Etsy’s 2021 Grand Prize Winner, a line in West Elm’s Local Artist Collaboration, and a feature in JoJo Fletcher’s Etsy Collection, the popularity of her work continues to grow. Recently, the team at Bryan Ashley worked with Candice to create a custom fiber wall panel as a design feature within their 2022 HD Expo + Conference booth space.

How did you go about designing and creating the fiber wall panel for the booth? Upon seeing the inspiration for the booth space, it became important for me to focus on neutrals that could bring visual interest and texture without distracting and taking away from the flow of the space. I was particularly drawn to the UNC Charlotte Marriott headboard, which was to be in the same sightline, and focused on trying to mimic the diagonal lines with fiber in a more modern way. I thought it would be a unique twist on what we typically see from fiber wall hangings. We started with a digital mock-up as to what these diagonal shapes could be and had it printed out on a lifesize 7’x8’ vinyl banner that we hung up to reference as a guide to weave over. Due to the height, we then suspended the rods by way of a make-shift pulley system to our ceiling and began a true method of “trial and error”. I have an amazing small team of hard-working women, who like me, are up for any challenge. In my opinion, they nailed my vision!! One of my stylists, Ashley, was the lead on this project. When she found her footing, the rest was history. As a team, we learned so much in this process and look forward to the next opportunity. Now, we are busy brainstorming what a permanent line of textured room dividers could look like as part of our product offering. We were honored to be a part of this award-winning space and appreciate Bryan Ashley trusting us to execute what started as an idea and a pencil sketch!
